Maleny Historical Memories with Desley Malone.

The Pub on the Bank of the Obi. Check out the rudimentary bridge over the Obi in 1907, with the new Maleny Hotel in the background - where there’s a will, there’s a way! The Maleny Hotel ownership has changed many times since it was built in 1907 as a single storey building from pit-sawn white beech by Harry Bate and Sam Sallaway, for the owner, Joe Pollock. Joe sold to ACK Cooke in 1908, with R. Gay purchasing it the following year. In 1914, J. Glower became the licensee for a short time before selling to AE Godwin that year. In about 1914, the old North Maleny School was purchased and moved to the hotel to become the kitchen. At that time, soft drinks were manufactured at the hotel. In the early 1920’s a billiards room and barber’s shop were conducted at the hotel. The list of ownership changes continued - L. Haley 1918, Mrs G.O. Murphy 1921, W.H.R. Burnett 1922, R.C. Burnett 1930, W.H.R. Burnett 1942, F. Roberts 1949, W. C. Wilkinson 1953, Mrs B. Wallace 1956, C.R. Heavey 1958, P.V. Gibbs late 1958, C.B. Turner 1959, J.B. Currie 1960, and Mrs Thelma Curry for a few months only in 1963. T.O. Appleby 1963, Mrs B. Wallace 1966, L.C. Keding 1967, D.C. Vine 1971, and P.J. Vine 1976. Then perhaps the era known so well by many Malenyites today - In February 1977, Mr Stewart Pickering and his wife Gretel purchased the pub, moving here from Sydney. Gretel was particularly keen on researching the early history and provided these dates. Teutoburg to Witta by Steve Chaddock and Dale Jacobsen This soon to be published book will be welcomed by everyone who enjoys reading about our district’s history. We’ll keep you posted about the release date and stockists when it’s out but here is the synopsis. “European settlers arrived on the Blackall Range in the 1880's to carve out a place to live among thick vine scrub. Selection offered them a chance to establish a place of their own, clearing the land using hand tools, felling trees and sawing them into timbers to establish homes, and fence smallholdings which grew into dairy farms. On 17 October 1887 an enterprising group of ex-German nationals selected land portions in the Blackall Range and formed the kernel of the new town of Teutoburg, in memory of the forest they left behind, located in Germany where one of the most famous battles from ancient history took place. The result of the battle itself meant that Germania would remain forever independent and never become part of the Roman Empire! Whilst the area was known as Teutoburg’ but, as of 1899 the Lands Department referred to the town as ‘Teutoberg’. For 30 years they built a community centred around dairy farms and their Lutheran faith. All that changed on the 18th May 1916 when, due to anti-German sentiment, Teutoburg was renamed Witta.”

Drawing on information sourced for the three highly successful Wittafest events held in 2015, 2016 and 2018, Witta archaeologist, museum expert and anthropologist, Steve Chaddock, and Curramore writer, Dale Jacobsen, teamed up to record the history in printed form, with lots of illustrations. It has been a long process, pulling together, then teasing apart, the personal stories behind the settlement of the area that was once called Teutoburg”.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny This past week was very eventful for our club. On Thursday 27/1 we had our regular play day with both lawns in use. On lawn one, Sarah Widin defeated Vince Carbery 13-9 while Ken Barker defeated Val Carbery 19-12, with both matches ercely contested. During the game on lawn two, when Wallace Roy defeated Helen Uhlmann with ve hoops to two, a great moment occurred when Wallace suddenly relocated his missing roquet skill, which had been absent for some time, by identifying a fault in his backswing. This resulted in much joy as he proceeded to make many impressively accurate roquets during the match. A croquet players dream comes true!! Saturday morning 29/1 saw the inaugural Association Skills Workshop held on our lawns. This was well attended by both local players and people from other clubs in the region. Five skills stations were set up, with a speci c skill being coached at each. It was a wonderful opportunity for skills development.

Sarah and Ted made a very impressive partnership to defeat Ken and Donna Manning, scoring 21 hoops to 14. In the other match up of the day, Wallace singly took on the strong partnership of Kath Smith and Helen Andrews, with the nal score being14 to 9 in Kath and Helen’s favour. We’ve been pleased to have been able to enjoy these activities despite the uncertain weather we are having at the moment here in Maleny, with alternating rain and sunshine. This weather pattern is sure keeping our lawns green and lush! Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged at 2.15 and started by 2.30. Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am.

In the attached photo, one of our coaches, Sarah Widin, is demonstrating hoop control to Al Keetman from the Bribie Island Club and Mim Hartzemberg from the Headland Buderim Club. Many thanks to the coaches who donated their time during this great morning. Sunday 30/1 saw another fun and friendly afternoon of play with the added pleasure of having our longstanding friend of the club, Ted Singleton, visit.
