Community Newsletter Thank You Maleny Show Society With fabulous weather and exciting new events and entertainment, bumper crowds were treated to a Maleny Show to remember in 2021. Organisers could not be happier to see their hard-work come to fruition, complete with the new facilities also much appreciated by attendees over the two day event. The Covid-enforced closure of the 2020 Show seemed to draw even more show goers this year, with the atmosphere and buzz around the grounds one of buoyancy to be back to the 83rd Maleny Show. New entertainment in the shape of Monster Trucks drew huge crowds on both evenings, along

with a laser and reworks display more spectacular than ever.

Historical Society, and the Pioneer Ukulele Club were seamless, their efforts ensuring hundreds of show patrons were bussed safely to and from the grounds.

The traditional Pavilion exhibits and the dairy, beef and poultry sections were as popular as ever, side-show alley was packed and the dog jump reached new heights! The new regulations required for a Covid-safe event meant a lot of extra work and planning for the Maleny Show Society committee and their many volunteers, but the results spoke for themselves. Under the guidance of David Lowden the "Park and Ride” facilities put in place and manned by volunteers from the Maleny Men’s Shed, the Horseless Carriage Club, Maleny Cultural &

Dignitaries also took the opportunity to sincerely thank now retired Show President of nearly three decades, Ivan Hankinson and his wife Kaye for their service. Andrew Powell MP summed it up perfectly in his speech when making the presentatlon on Saturday, saying “ It is very tting that we acknowledged the extraordinary contribution of Ivan and Kaye Hankinson to the Maleny Show Society at today’s Grand Parade. Ivan’s service to our country (through military service) and our community through countless roles is amazing in its own right. But to serve continuously as Society President for 29 years is simply outstanding. And Ivan couldn’t have done it without the full support (and advice) of his beautiful wife, Kaye. Thank you both for everything you’ve done for Maleny and the Sunshine Coast.” Hear hear!

Getting Around Without a Ca “Share Your Views”

Your Club News If your club or organisation is an associate member of the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club then you can publicise your club results and news in this, our “Community Billboard”.

Wouldn’t it be great, best case scenario, for visitors and residents of the hinterland to enjoy local walks, bike rides and fewer vehicles that clog the road? Getting around without a car is good for physical and mental health, builds social connections and reduces traf c. A local group of Maleny people have found numerous challenges in trying to get around safely and easily without a car. They are asking, ‘what it’s like getting around without a car?’

Keep your events diary up to date on the MDSARC Inc Web site so that we all know about your communities important events.

The Maleny Pathways Group, a working party developed following a Maleny Forums’ community gathering, has developed a survey and invites feedback from everyone: locals and visitors of all ages who walk, use a mobility aid, runners, riders, pushers of prams, scooter riders and those who travel on skateboard.

This is your newsletter - let all of Maleny know the latest info from your club every week!

The survey can be completed via the QR code below or visit: www.surveymonkey.com/r/JP2KLVS or email malenypathways@gmail.com.

All articles, results, posters and photos (as large sized jpegs, please do not embed these in a Word doc) for inclusion in the weekly sports results should be emailed to

The survey will be live until 500 responses have been gathered. Have you got issues about footpaths in Maleny? Where? Let’s hear your views! Results of the Pathways Survey will be shared with the Maleny community as well as with Local and State Governments who are our partners in actioning results. Cr Winston Johnston (Division 5) will discuss the survey results within appropriate areas of Sunshine Coast Council. Local State member Andrew Powell is also involved.

Maleny Historical Society On 25 May 1951, 70 years ago since the School of Arts and Freeleagus’ Cafe & Bakery (formerly McLeans Cafe) burnt down at 23 and 25 Maple Street. A strong westerly wind fanned the blaze and a sudden wind change saved several shops nearby. The Nambour Fire Brigade broke down and had to be towed to town, but by then the buildings had burnt to the ground. The Maleny Fire Brigade was formed not long after this re. ANZAC Day Book Dona ons to Maleny State High School This year as well as contributions from Maleny individuals and community groups one donor made a special journey up from Melbourne to donate a book in memory of her uncle, a Maleny man, Private Tom Lillingstone. Jill Lillingstone’s uncle was killed in action in Belgium during WW1 and she personally presented the book “Fighting on the Home Front – The Legacy of Women in World War One” by Kate Adie to Maleny State High School representatives.

who was a school master in the area for over 20 years. Tom went with his sisters to the Maleny Provisional School at Witta. Tom refused to re a gun or kill, but saw it as his duty to serve as an advanced rst aider collecting wounded on the front line. Sadly, he was killed saving others at the Battle of Passchendaele. Until a few years ago Tom’s name was missing from the records of Maleny locals who served in the war. This was because the exact location of Tom’s enlistment was unknown. However, through Jill’s tireless work and research Tom is now remembered on a stone bollard at the Maleny

Soldiers Memorial Hospital “Walk of Remembrance” and the Maleny RSL Honour Roll. With the generous donation of this book from Jill and others from the community, Toms name and what our soldiers fought for will be remembered for many years to come. Maleny SHS thanks the community for donating a lasting legacy in the form of books, each one with a label commemorating ANZAC Day 2021. Again this would not have been possible without the fantastic support from the staff at Rosetta Books for sourcing books, keeping lists and even wrapping donations.

The North Maleny School (opened in 1887) was built on land selected by Tom’s father William Hammond Lillingstone

Maleny Rangers FC U14 Girls Game Report by Coach Pete On Saturday the girls had another away game at Yandina, vs NYU. A full team, with 3 on the bench had the team pumped although maybe just a little tired as they had all spent the previous night at the Maleny Show! The game was very intense right from the start with both teams pushing hard. The NYU girls were big and very physical but that didn’t stop Maleny from doing their thing and persistence saw Maleny score rst after several good attempts. NYU rallied and scored an equaliser to take the game into halftime at 1-1. The second half started in much the same way as the rst. Play went back and forth with neither team able to capitalise despite scoring opportunities. The last 10 minutes saw Maleny make several good runs at the opposition goal but with no result. Final score stayed at 1-1. With 7 rounds played so far, the Maleny girls are sitting in second place on the ladder. They are the only team to have not lost a game this season. 3 wins, 4 draws and 0 losses. https://www.facebook.com/MalenyRangersFC

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny As preparations for the rst Maleny show since Covid went on around them, seven players enjoyed themselves on lawn 1 chasing balls through hoops with mallets.

As well as that it creates links with like-minded people from other clubs and is good socially. In the attached photo, Gillian practises hoop running at Nambour club in preparation for a ricochet pennants game as an unidenti ed Nambour club member moves across the background.

The sounds of joy rides being assembled and cattle moving into their stalls did not distract Wallace Roy as he established a 10 – 4 win over a team consisting of Kath Smith and Gillian Bradley.

Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days.

Ken Barker and Bev Sockhill managed 12 hoops against Sally Adams and Helen Andrews. Several players are becoming involved in competitions further a eld and this is good for the level of play within the club as those players experience different lawns and also meet different styles of play.

The Range Croquet Club of Maleny invite you to a Come and Try morning. Saturday the 5th of June 2021 from 9 am until noon Morning tea is provided Our beautiful lawns are situated in The Maleny Showgrounds off Stanley River Road. Our friendly members will welcome you for some fun. All ages welcome. See you there.
