Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Adam Scott Drives the Search for Maleny After the worldwide attention created when Adam Scott live broadcast his “Nine Holes With a Mate" at Maleny Golf Club, online searches for the town of Maleny have seen the town ranked second in Booking.com s Top 10 in Australia.

The Booking.com survey revealed the top ten searched destinations in Australia with a search-rank increase of over 100 places in July 2020, compared to the same period in 2019.
Maleny’s picturesque golf course made headline news when Adam Scott, who is also a Sunshine Coast resident, used his star power to attract attention to his games of golf on the course at Maleny with
his old friend and Maleny Golf Club’s pro, Wayne Perske. The club has seen bookings for games skyrocket ever since. Area Manager for Australia at Booking.com Luke Wilson said it was heartening to see travellers heading back to iconic destinations for their winter holiday fix. “Our July search trends demonstrate confidence is slowly returning,” he said. “Queenslanders, conscious of not being complacent of restrictions returning are also looking to travel to traditional coastal destinations mostly within one to two hours’ north drive of Brisbane.” (With thanks to Sunshine Valley Gazette for info).

Regional Disability Expo Researching and finding everything you need if you are a disabled person or support a family member with a disability can be difficult and time-consuming. We have drawn together people who can help you with information, care products, services, and activities available on the Sunshine Coast. The EXPO is being held to make it easier for Sunshine Coast families, carers and people with disabilities find the support, services and products to help them improve their quality of life.

The EXPO will be held at the Caoundra Indoor Stadium in North Street, Caloundra on the 29th October, 2020 between 9.30a.m. and 4p.m. and entry is FREE.

Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston Off-leash Dog Areas Maleny Council officers advise that the Maleny Showground is a designated Off Leash Dog Area. Whilst this is the actual situation, there are however a number of uses on the Showground which are not compatible with such a designation. For instance there are areas reserved for sports such as croquet, cricket and soccer, as well as other areas used for horse sports and camping.
Unfortunately some dog owners fail to respect these incompatible uses and also fail to pick up their animals faeces. Consequently this situation is totally unacceptable to those sporting bodies and to campers. In addition dogs and horses do not mix well and apart from the obvious danger to all parties, there is a biosecurity problem. Consequently, I am pleading for dog owners to not use any of the sporting fields and only use the horse paddock when there are no horses.

Also please ensure owners pick up their dogs droppings. Doggy-do bags are conveniently located at six different locations at the show-grounds. A Dedicated Dog Walking Park Following representations from the Maleny community, Council is currently investigating the possible creation of a large dedicated, fenced dog walking area on The Maleny Precinct. It will be close to the pathway between town and the MDSRC lease area carpark. Hopefully funding will be available in the 2021-22 financial year to enable this plan to become a reality.

The Old Witta School The Old Witta School is situated at 316 Witta Road. The Old Witta School lies in five acres of beautiful parkland just seven kilometres from Maleny. The historical building, built in 1892, was the Witta State School until its closure in 1974. The school opened on 3rd October, 1892, as the Maleny Provisional School. In January 1893 the name was changed to Teutoburg Provisional School and to Teutoburg State School in January 1909. It finally became Witta State School in 1916. There were seventeen ‘first-day’ pupils. The first Head Teacher was Mr J.W. Thiedecke, followed by Miss Wassall, Mr Jones and Mr
MacKenzie. Members of the original school committee were Messrs. F. Warne, C.M. Nothling and Bergann. The first school was a weather-board building of pit-sawn timber. It was also the first post office, the mail being brought weekly from Landsborough by packhorse. Source: Witta State School 80th Year Jubilee Celebration Souvenir Booklet, 21st October 1972.
The Old Witta School Community Centre No longer a school, the Witta Community Centre as it has become is now available for hire by family and community groups for self-catered private functions. The school provides a serene setting for significant celebrations with reasonable hire rates, extensive and beautifully maintained grounds and plenty of parking space. Beautiful aged shade trees and large open grass areas compliment the old timber building and provide an ideal venue for a wide range of activities. Witta Tennis Club Friday 14 August: Whistlers played at Ballinger against the Breezers. It was a very warm day and no wind, great day to be on the courts. There was a lot of running and nice shots. It was great tennis and very close the whole way, but we were only 1 game short. But surely, we all enjoyed each other’s company. Score was 30-31 games, 4 sets all. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper.
Wednesday 26 August: Witta Wagtails played a challenging game against Eumundi Miss Gems winning 4 sets each. It was an exciting day of tennis with excellent weather. Congratulations go to Eumundi Miss Gems who came away with a 5 game win. Thanks to the Wagtails’ Team - Cynthia Garvie, Jan Maguire, Cheryl Cavanagh & Sonia Douglas.
The Wildcats were at home to Eumundi Echo. The team of Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Libby Howlett and Jenie Riding led from the start and didn’t look back. The final score was 5-3 sets; 42-27 games. It was great tennis weather.

Wednesday 19 August: The Wagtails had the bye. Friday 21 August: Whistlers played at Witta against Caloundra Racquetts. It was a bit windy, but not as bad as we expected, and we used the wind to bring us a win. Good tennis and company as usual, and we had a good day. Score was 48-18 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Maree Hooley, Annie Quarmby and Aki Lepper.

The Wildcats travelled to Mooloolaba to compete against the top team the Mojito’s. It was close all day with the wind a hindrance at times. In the end the Mojito’s were too strong. History of Maleny Tennis Club The Maleny Tennis Club was formed in 1926. Two courts were laid on the Maleny Showgrounds, probably with Shire Council assistance and voluntary work done by the prospective club members. Apart from several private courts in the district and several school courts the only courts available to the public were situated on the Witta sports ground. Several names of people who were among the early players were Shapter, Evans, Harwood, Hankinson, Mogridge, Grundon and Waters. The top dressing of clay probably came from the Vandriekes at Witta. One court was later surfaced with a bitumen-like product which enabled play to take place earlier after rain. The surface was hard on balls and sandshoes and was hot in summer. It was torn up and replaced in the fifties by clay. The interest in tennis was carried on largely by a handful of players during the war years. Names that come to mind are Bill Yelland who was the Postmaster and A. C. (Mac) McCracken.
Redcliffe, Maleny Club courts became the home courts for the Maleny Association. At first the matches were played by eight teams, four at home and four away, which somewhat stretched resources, even though several teams from Landsborough to Alexandra played in the Maleny Association. Matches were played on Sundays only and these courts were the centre of increased tennis interest. On match days the teams consisted of two ladies and four men (twelve sets). The short cut to the courts was over the log footbridge for town dwellers. Floods periodically washed away or dislodged the footbridge, and then began the hunt for a new log and the wherewith-all to put it in place. The courts needed a lot of maintenance and preparation. Apart from the occasional working
bee and ”all hands on deck”, special individuals are worthy of mention. Wally Petersen, the accountant at the nearby butter factory was the chief court preparer and court marker for about twenty-five years, sometimes with helpers. Jack Thorne began to assist Wally, and, together with others, for several years looked after the courts. The club members and other players should be grateful for the unselfish time and energy spent in providing for our enjoyment. The clubhouse was built about the late fifties and provided a muchneeded amenity. Prior to the provision of town water supply water for the courts was made available from the Maleny Dairy Association and the chairman of the same was invited to be the Club Patron. Post-war 1946 the interest in tennis increased and a third court was laid down by the Club members, and many hands worked in the levelling in the same way as a concrete floor is laid. The Maleny Youth Club persuaded the council to provide a court for their members, but interest waned and essentially the Maleny Tennis Club took it over. “Maleny Upgrades Underway” with Winston Johnston Preliminary clearing works have been completed at the four major lookouts around Maleny, with council staff hard at work to keep them tidy, well-maintained and with adequate signage. I’m also pleased to announce a $100,000 upgrade will begin after the September school holidays (weather and site conditions dependant) to improve the picnic areas at Mary Cairncross Park, Maleny. Wild dog baiting to begin. Council, in partnership with Biosecurity Queensland, is supporting a community-based coordinated Wild Dog Baiting Program. Failure to control wild dogs can result in livestock
losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna. Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land and participation in this program is an effective way to help meet this responsibility. The Wild Dog Baiting Program will be held throughout Bald Knob, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Belli Park, Cambroon, Conondale, Coochin Creek, Crohamhurst, Curramore, Elaman Creek, Gheerulla, Glass House Mountains, Kenilworth, Kidaman Creek, Landsborough, Obi Obi, Peachester, Reesville, Witta and Wootha areas from 31 August to 25 September.
Written notification will be provided to residents within the baiting area, please contact council if you have any questions.

Remember When! - Maleny Meats
In 1994 Maleny Meats butcher shop was owned and run by Mrs Bev Heading and her son, Rodney Heading. Rod had previously work at Maleny Butchery in Maple Street for John McMahon. Prior to the Heading family running Maleny Meats, the butcher's shop was owned and run by C.W. (Snow) McKillop and then Doug Mason, of 'Blue Hills' farm near Witta. These butchers were both well respected characters of Maleny in their own ways. The McKillop families still reside in the wider Sunshine Coast hinterland areas. In 1994 the building was owned by Mike Katsaras and was demolished at the end of 1997 to make way for the Caloundra City Libraries Maleny branch library carpark. The Range Croquet Club - Maleny OnThursday two lawns were again in play. Gillian Bradley andHelen Andrews played Sally Adams and Bev Sockhill two and a half games ofgolf croquet on lawn 1. Scores favoured Gillian and Helen in the first two 7 –5, 7 –6 with the unfinished game drawn 2 –2.
Conditions were a little bleak on Sunday with rain threatening now and then. Nevertheless,Donna Manning scored a convincing win against Vince, pegging out to win 26 –3.
The Range Croquet Club (Maleny) and clubhouse are available to hire for events. Supervised practice is on Saturdays at 8.00 am
On lawn 2 Vince Carbery played a team consisting of Alice Spittle and Sarah Widin winning that 14 –11; while Nick Cram played Kath Smith in a game of singles finishing ahead 17 -10. “Oh no!” says Helen in the attached Photo at Right . She has inadvertently used her blue ball to put Bev Sockhill’s yellow ball through hoop 1 giving Bev, her opponent, the first point in their game of golf croquet.
