Join in the Net Set Go Program!

Net Set Go is a fantastic program run as an introductory fun course to the sport of Netball. It is a lot of fun and is for BOYS and GIRLS! It’s a chance to learn the netball basics, get outside, pick up a netball or chuck on a bib and make some friends. Each participant will receive their very own pack which includes a netball and t-shirt

The program is at risk of not going ahead this term due to low numbers. We only need a few more kids to join in to keep it running, it’s hard enough keeping sporting clubs running in small towns we really need to support their programs and efforts in the community to bring sports to our families.

If your kids are, interested feel free to send a message to malenynetball@gmail.com

NetSetGo (ages 5-10) happens on Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm at Maleny High School.

Come and get the kids involved, you know you want to!

MALENY

Just one year ago a group of six enthusiastic gardeners held a meeting to discuss a project to beautify the main street of Maleny. It was decided to plant Hanging Baskets along the shop fronts of our main street and to ask the shop owners to support us by sponsoring a basket to partially cover the cost of the baskets and plants.

This month The Maleny Street Gardeners’ Alliance celebrated its first anniversary. Most stores and organisations have showed great enthusiasm and there are now 60 hanging baskets along Maple Street.

Support has been unstinting from local plant and hardware stores, Searles, Makita, The Apex Club, and private donors. With prompting from Winston Johnston, the Council was early to our aid by agreeing to totally replant the Roundabout at the entrance to Maleny.

We are now an incorporated not for profit organisation who meet regularly over a cup of coffee to discuss baskets, plants, soils, fertilisers, sun, wind and rain. Willing experts in each of these areas have donated their time to come along and

give us the benefit of their knowledge and workshops have been invaluable.

A Logo to announce our presence was an early step. We now have a Basket Group responsible for the choice, purchase and caring of the plants.

A resourceful and inventive supporter has designed and built each of us a metal frame with arms to hold twelve baskets which makes the lengthy and constant care of the baskets easier.

A laughingly nominated Street Walkers Group is responsible for visiting each store and organisation along the main street to inform them of our aims and ask for their support. We have been surprised and encouraged at the enthusiasm for our project. The Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club donate their premises for our meetings.

An all-male basket hanging group aided by the Apex Club helps with the nuts and bolts of the installation process and John is our watering man. We could not do without our members who take care of the inevitable government regulations. We hope residents and visitors are enjoying the flowers and the Hanging Baskets.

When you see a man in a yellow vest watering the flowering hanging baskets in Maleny Street you will know it is John, from The Maleny Street Gardeners’ Alliance.

Sunshine Coast Council concerned about Dangerous dogs

Owning any dog comes with serious responsibilities and that is increased for owners of regulated dog. The Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 requires local governments to manage regulated dogs within their boundaries.

Council is committed to promoting community safety and educating the community on how to be a responsible pet owner through various education programs.

A menacing dog declaration may be made for a dog if it behaved in a way defined as 'dangerous', except that the attack was not serious.

Responsible dog ownership will be highlighted as the Sunshine Coast Council launches its annual inspection program.

The council conducts annual audits of properties where a regulated dog is kept, ensures animal owners are doing the right thing by their community to reduce potential risks. These audits, whilst conducted throughout the year are now being conducted in force.

For more information on the conditions for keeping a regulated dog, visit council’s website: https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/

Maleny Historical Memories

with Desley Malone

Here’s a great shot looking down Teak Street into Maple Street and beyond in 1958 from MHM’s. Teak Street was known as Lawley’s Hill since the early 1900’s, and also locally as Walkers Hill (with the Walkers still at the top of the hill) Posties Hill and Post Office Hill!

Many locals will remember that the building at the bottom right, where the newsagency is now, was the local Post Office. Apparently there were some memorable billycart rides undertaken back in the day by fearless lads who didn’t mind losing a bit of skin. Another memory goes back into the 1960’s when policeman, Joe Spooner made learner drivers stop at the steepest point to test your hill starts…. if the car didn't roll back when one moved off, you passed.

There must have been many a learner scared half to death!

Be prepared for a change in the weather conditions

As of today we have had some days of hot weather with little rainfall for over a week. Today might be a warm and sunny day, but there are thunderstorms forecast to arrive in Brisbane and Sunshine Coast tonight. This storm is expected to bring 30km/h winds and possible showers. A huge pool of cold Antarctic air is travelling northwards being pushed by a deep low pressure system from near Tasmania. Much of southeastern Australia, right up to South East Queensland will receive a cold blast taking us back to July like temperatures. This will include a sharply westerly wind change from Wednesday on, accompanied by a drop in temperatures averaging around 10C

Take care and be prepared.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

Lesley Johnstone and Carole Atkinson from Headland Buderim Club visited on Thursday with Dianne Horsham to celebrate the warmer weather. The attached photo shows Lesley and Carole on the left with Diane on the right flanking Lynette Evans, Wallace Roy, Sarah Widin and Vince Carbery. Unfortunately the blue sky in the background changed dramatically over the course of the afternoon.

A doubles game with Ken Barker and Lesley matched up against Sarah and Vince and two singles games Wallace v Carole and Lynette v Dianne were bubbling along nicely until, just after afternoon tea, storm clouds gathered, and warnings began to appear on mobile phones.

With a forty-minute drive to negotiate, the visitors decided that discretion was the better part of valour and headed home. A substantial storm followed soon afterwards.

No scores were recorded, however, in the discussions which always go on in the sidelines of such games, it was revealed that Vince had played continuous sporting activity for nearly three quarters of a century. Quite an achievement!

There is an old adage that when you are playing badly, the best strategy is to keep it simple. Don’t try the difficult shots. On Sunday Ken ignored this, and paid the price, leaving his partner Wallace to the mercy of Vince and Sarah who won 20 – 7.

Dianne and Lynette played a game of singles which Lynette, fresh from her victory at Stephens Club in the Ernie Melville, won 17 -11.

Play days: Thursday and Sunday 1.00 pm for 1.30. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Please arrive at 1 pm for games to be arranged by 1.15.

Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am.
