Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter A Step Closer for Hydrotherapy in Maleny On Wednesday 9th February 2022, a Hydrotherapy Centre for Maleny took one step closer to becoming a reality when Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club signed an agreement to provide land on Maleny Sports Park to Maleny Hydrotherapy Inc. Under the curious eyes of equestrian friends, the Presidents of both organisations, Tim Bagshaw (left) and Mike Norman signed a document that provides MHI with a portion of the MDSRC leased land on which to build their centre. A spokesperson for the MHI said “It’s exciting news. It's been a long time coming and we are

working towards delivering a hydrotherapy pool for our community. Council approval will be sought, but in the meantime some serious fundraising will be done”. Mike Norman was enthusiastic in his comments "Sunshine Coast Council approved Maleny Sports Park on the Precinct as the future site for the centre at its Ordinary Meeting on 8 November 2018. A purpose-built hydrotherapy centre in Maleny is crucial for a broad range of patients requiring rehabilitation and recovery. It will support not just our ageing population but those with sporting and other injuries. We are pleased to be working together

with MHI who have worked for many long years towards delivering this project. This agreement is a step that enables MHI to raise the balance of funds needed to construct and operate their hydrotherapy facility." Both organisations recognise that this is an ambitious project, but acknowledge the huge bene ts that not just locals, but communities across the Sunshine Coast Hinterland will enjoy once this facility becomes operational. MP for Fisher Andrew Wallace congratulated all involved, saying "This has been a project long in the making and last week's progress is testament to the tenacity of so many in the local community over many years. Great work all!”.

Visitors Descend on Maleny Golf Club!

Golfers were stopped mid-swing recently at the sight of a helicopter landing on the practice area at Maleny Golf Club, where some occupants of sporting note disembarked to play a round. Former Rugby League International Mark Cantoni and mates Matt Lockyer (brother of league legend Darren) and Angus Simmons said they really loved the course and had a great day out. “The ight up from Brisbane through the Glasshouse Mountains was spectacular and it was amazing to land on and play at such a picturesque course like Maleny,” said Cantoni. “We’ll de nitely be back!” League legend Al e Langer was also spotted out on the course recently! Masters Champion and former World Number One Adam Scott really helped put Maleny Golf Club on the international “must play” map in 2020 by streaming 9 holes live on Instagram during the global pandemic lockdown. Since then a plethora of top players have visited Maleny to pit their skills against the course – the most recent being former Australian men’s amateur champion and 2022 Australian PGA champion, Jed Morgan. A Cricket History – Maleny and District With the cricket season in full swing, we take a look at the long history of cricket in our district, as recorded by Vince Carbery. Here are some extracts. “The actual commencement of cricket in Maleny is thought to have commenced in the mid 1920’s of cially. On November 9, 1903, Kenilworth played host to a team from Teutoberg (Witta). The Teutoberg team won the match by 32 runs. Names such as Bergann, Bobermein, Cox and Sommer are still associated with this area. From earliest times it is obvious that cricket formed an important part of the lives of the early settlers. In 1925, Carl Nothling, foundation President of the Witta Cricket Club and a councillor in the Landsborough Shire Council, had a motion passed that the club would never have to pay rates. The late Aub Cork once mentioned 1927 as a possible

starting point for the Maleny Cricket Club starting at the Maleny Showgrounds.

other clubs were Elaman Creek, Baroon Pocket, Kenilworth, Lower Kenilworth, Landsborough and at one stage Witta and Elaman combined.

Pre and post the Second World War it was customary for teams from Brisbane to visit Maleny and Witta and play a game of cricket against Witta-Maleny. These games were a prelude to the cricket season and played in September and were an important social event.

Up until the early seventies there was no such thing as junior cricket. Any young boy wishing to play the game joined in the senior ranks and served his apprenticeship by batting number eleven and elding at ne leg until he did something spectacular.

A reciprocal visit to the Brisbane clubs took place also. Records show that this contact started as far back as 1933.

About 1978 the club decided to build a new oval which required a great deal of earthworks and some blasting and so the Aub Cork Oval came into being.

Cricket was suspended during the war years.

With the initial success of our teams in the coast competition, it was realised to eld a First

Many clubs made up the Maleny and District Association in its hey day. As well as Maleny and Witta,

A Cricket History Maleny and District (Continued from previous page) by Vince Carbery Division team we would need a turf wicket – which was built on the Dave Hankinson Oval. The late Clem Jones, the curator at the Gabba, gave advice. We brought in soil from Rob Cork's property at Witta which was put through a hammer mill at Ken Murtagh's Kenilworth property before being used as top dressing. Soil was also obtained from the Ipswich area. It was interesting to hear Clem Jones comment that he would have tried the local red soil rst. This wicket was rst used on November 16, 1985. After the passing of the horse era, the motor vehicle solved many transport problems. On numerous occasions an over-loaded ute with an enthusiastic team of cricketers on board or an car with people standing on running boards, and hanging on or dear life, could be seen heading to a cricket ground somewhere from Maleny to Lower Kenilworth and all cricketing points in between. On other occasions the local cream carrier came to the rescue. We have now turned full circle with most individuals providing their own transport.

Maleny Trail Parkrun

What a gorgeous photo, taken at last week’s setting up for the 58th Maleny Parkrun!

Thank you Ellie - without the volunteers who set up, enter details to the website, record times, clear everything away and generally look after everyone, there wouldn’t be this great event happening every Saturday morning in Maleny - a huge shout out of thanks to all of you!

Saving the Dark In what is good news for our environment, the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance that has been commissioned by the Federal Government to do a study into how to best preserve the night sky. As part of the report, the ADSA are conducting a nation-wide survey. They are encouraging individuals and Dark sky places aspirants to complete the following survey, that only takes about ten minutes.

It would do well for all our present day cricketers to be thankful for the surfaces on which they play this great game today. The only mowing that was done on some grounds in the past was achieved by the local cows. Of course that created another hazzard. Occasionally a local farmer would slash the grass and the eld would resemble a paddock of hay ready for baling. Many players had lengthy playing lives. Probably, Ike Lowe, who played much of his cricket at Witta, would most likely have racked up fty years, spanning World War 2, as he played on into his seventies. Len Lowe and Vince Carbery both commenced as twelve year olds and played into their sixties, also making the fty years. In our case it was consecutive seasons. There may well have been others.”

https://www.australasiandarkskyalliance.org/ darkskynetwork Please just click on the link, do the survey and help play your part in saving the dark. Feel free to forward the survey link to anyone you think cares for preserving natural dark nights. Thanks for your support!

A New Website Made Easy for Your Club

Whether you're running a business or a community group, the last two years have taught us one thing. No website - No business. Now we've been lucky here in Queensland and especially in Maleny, but in the past two years, we've made a massive leap in the digital space. Many businesses found themselves without customers when the lockdowns happened. The government even handed out funds for businesses and community groups to build websites to continue operations. Is 2022 the year for you to upgrade or build a new website? If so, you could nd a chat with Johannes Klupfel, who runs malenywebdesign.com.au will help.

Rosetta Books Providing Covid Safe Options Great service from Rosetta Books of Maleny as well as home delivery, you can phone your order through on 5435 2134 and collect at the door if you'd rather not enter shops at present.

Johannes and his wife Shauna moved here in 2012 and started a business after working many years as full time volunteers with a not-for-pro t group in Townsville. Back then, they found it challenging to get the services they needed and decided to start a business to help local groups and businesses with their digital needs. Websites, Google Ads, Facebook Ads, Email Marketing, Marketing Automation - all the things volunteers in our many clubs can struggle with. Johannes can listen to your needs and make it easy. He is already working with several Maleny clubs on their website needs and welcomes your enquiries about how he can make the whole process a breeze for you. Visit their website https://malenywebdesign.com.au/ or give them a call on 5391 4977 – and get a website you can be proud of.

Thursday 10th and another coaching session, this time on ricochet, took place under the guidance of Bill Habner from Nambour Club, interested in strengthening the prospects of the Nanbour team in the ricochet pennants competition. This was followed by a short session of association croquet where Sarah Widin scored 2 against Lynette Evans and Helen Andrews who made 4. Val Carbery made 11 against Wallace Roy and Priscilla Vickers 4. Lynette competed away at Bribie on the weekend of the 12th and 13th in the Traditional Funerals event for Association players (division 4). She played some ne games and recorded a memorable win with a “Golden Hoop” nish. This occurs when scores are still tied after time and extra shots. It is sudden death. The game goes to the player scoring the next hoop. The attached photo right shows Lynette lining up an apparently simple hoop which, under the conditions, would have looked like it had teeth. Nevertheless, she made it, to win the game. Well done. With a few showers about, club players were thin on the lawn on Sunday 13th. Vince Carbery managed 3
