Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Maleny Rotary Pride of Workmanship Awards It was Aristotle some 2400 years ago, who rst said “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.” The Rotary Club of Maleny is proud to continue their Pride of Workmanship Awards to provide businesses and organisations with an opportunity to acknowledge and thank employees for this habit of excellence. Given the COVID19 times, some employees have gone to exceptional lengths to help their managers and businesses in these different times. Rotary received a staggering 13 nominations this year for their Awards. A few nominees are still in their teens. Jared Ashcroft was thrilled to see one

of their members be included, saying "J’s Sports First Aid would like to congratulate team member Olin Stratford on being nominated for the Rotary Club of Maleny’s Pride in Workmanship Award. Olin will receive recognition on the 21st August at Tranquil Park in front of friends and family - this is a huge achievement for a bright and enthusiastic young man.” Organisers are looking forward to meeting all of the nominees with their workmates, families and friends next Saturday night at a presentation dinner to be held at Tranquil Park. Photos from the night will be published so, please keep an eye on the Rotary Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/rotaryclubofmaleny Photo left: Jared Ashcroft + Olin Stratford of J’s Sports First Aid.

We can reliably report that Sam left Cloncurry and has now reached Mt Isa safely - and as is his style, he’s had plenty of adventures and activities along the way. He took time out to give a Dolly's Dream talk to the students at Julia Creek State School and before that, dropped into Hughenden State School to give the kids there a quick talk on the importance of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Dolly's Dream in their community. Sam continues to hold "Movie Nights" on remote properties/stations as he passes through, something he’s always happy to do in exchange for a donation - he even carries a small jumping castle for the kids to entertain the whole family! Whilst in Richmond Shire, Councillor Nick Buick and Deputy Mayor June Kuhl presented Sam with a cheque for Royal Flying Doctor Service for $4,500! Sam could not resist a quick stopover at the Royal Flying Doctor Service Museum in Cloncurry on the way to to the world famous Mt Isa Rodeo. Having the time of his life, at the Mt Isa races, he bumped into Bob Katter, where they ended up on stage together. Photo:

Maleny Historical Memories “How Times Have Changed” by William (Bill) Penney with Desley Malone.

Maleny’s rst sale yard for cattle and pigs was situated at what is now Cooke Park. It was later shifted to beside the hotel, across the creek, out of town – where Woolworths is today. Here is an interesting history, told by the late Bill Penney, about how the animals were collected weekly from far and wide and sold at the Maleny sale yards. Bill Penney recalls: When I came to Maleny in 1935, the saleyards were situated on the same site as they are today, and were operated by Stephen Porter and Co Stephen went to the war and, sadly, never returned. The business was carried on by his brother Chas, until after the war when his nephew-in-law, Guy Cuthbertson, came along to run the business. My involvement started around 1950. In those days they were selling pigs and calves once a week, and cattle once a month. Each Monday morning, we would take the Fargo truck around the farms in Maleny, and the old International truck would go down to the Conondale area. It carried a set of platform scales to weigh the pigs and calves as they were loaded. Those farmers were immediately paid by cheque. The Maleny animals were loaded and brought to the saleyards where they were weighed, and, later, the owners would come to town and get their money.

Darling Downs bacon factory in Brisbane on his behalf. Other pigs were consigned to the bacon factory on behalf of the owners. These were tattooed or re branded for identi cation by the owner before being taken to the railway. The calves were sent to the meatworks. Collecting the cattle was a busy time. We (Wally Ferriday and I) would leave from home at 5 or 6 o'clock in the morning, load our horses onto the truck and go down to Conondale, sometimes to Camboroon, to start the ride back. We picked up cattle on the way, going into the farms that had cattle for sale. By the time we got to Fritz's farm, Mrs Grey would be waiting with a cup of tea and sandwiches (God bless her!). By now we would have anything up to forty head of cattle. Our next stop would be Max Grundon's where we would have lunch (maybe 2 o'clock) leave the cattle in the yards and ride back

up Aherns Road as far as need be, maybe up to Ludwig's and then back and up Gittins way. When we got back to Grundon's and collected what we left there, we had perhaps 70 to 80 head, all wanting to go home. Some of the farmers helped herd them with us along the way. This was a great help. Sometimes, at the bottom of the range, one rider would go up to Curramore and collect what was to come in and meet up with the main mob at the top of the range. By that time it could be nearly dark and we had perhaps 100 head. Quite a few times we drove the cattle into Maleny by the lights of the boss's car. By the time we put them in the "Tinner Paddock" (which is now part of the Porter's Farm Estate off Fig Street) it would be 9 or 10 o'clock at night.

Maleny Historical Memories

“How Times Have Changed” by William (Bill) Penney with Desley Malone.

before being headed off and returned to the mob, much to the delight of the nursing staff.

Continued from previous Page While that was going on, Laurie Porter would collect at Witta and Jack Boxsell would collect from Peachester, all on horseback in those days. Next day it was off to Wootha, Boroobin and North Maleny. Jack Eite would collect from Reesville.

Later, the same bull went into Tytherleigh's shop in Landsborough and quickly cleared the shop of its staff. No damage was done, thank goodness.

The cattle had to be in to the saleyards, and the ones collected from the Tinner Paddock, before the sale could start around 1 o’clock.

Some years later, the saleyards and business were sold to E.J.Cranney, who carried on as before until he passed away. It was then taken over by present owners, Boxsells, who have continued the business for many years.

After the sale, the cattle would have to be taken back to the paddock and kept until there were railway trucks availabe, or the meatworks wanted their cattle. It was nothing to have 300 head of cattle in the paddock for days.

Slowly things have changed over the times. Trucks started to pick up around the area, and so today everything is brought in by truck and taken away as soon as the sale is nished. You don't see a horse or dog around the yards much these days.

Occasionally they would break out, and then the fun would start - nding them all again.

I hope this gives you some insight into the changes that have taken place over the years.

We would have to take the cattle out to grass every day until they were sent away. We would take them along the Witta-Maleny Road. One person would go out as far as the Cement Hill and the other would stay at Reesville Road, spend the whole day there as the cattle grazed, and then bring them into the paddock at night.

Boxsells Livestock Saleyards traded from 1921 to 2004.

Sometimes we were lucky enough lo get all to the railway at once. Other times it happened a few truckloads at a time. Try taking 300 head of cattle to Landsborough by road these days! One buyer every sale bought all the bulls and these had to be all tied up in the railway truck. Quite a job, with 14 or 15 head in one wagon. Any cattle that couldn't make the walk to the rail were left behind, picked up by truck and taken down. Then, they were loaded off the bank or manhandled aboard. No ramps in those days! When everything was loaded at Landsborough, we would unsaddle the horses and let them go. They would be home next morning. There were some eventful times. Once, a bull decided that he had gone far enough and politely walked into the hospital. It caused quite a stir for a while! He nished up in the maternity section

Vietnam Veterans’ Day in Maleny On 18 August, we commemorate Vietnam Veterans' Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. On the 18th August 1966, in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan, Australian soldiers fought one of their ercest battles of the war. The men of Delta Company, 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, faced a force of some 2000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. By the end of the day, 17 Australians had been killed in action and 25 were wounded, one of whom died a few days later. We remember the sacri ces of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War. Maleny RSL sub-branch members and the community are encouraged to join us for this day of remembrance. All veterans and their families are invited to commemorate Vietnam Vets Day - Wednesday 18 August 2021 at the Maleny RSL. Service will commence at 11:00am, followed by refreshments.
