Maleny’s Roundabout Gets a Facelift As you drive in and out of Maleny, you’ll have noticed that our roundabout at the Riverside Centre has had quite a makeover. The spectacular ame tree that welcomes everyone to the main street of Maleny is now complemented and encircled by some very colourful plantings that will come into their own in the upcoming summer weather. The mulching has now been completed, the project is the result of a partnership between volunteers from the Maleny Street Gardeners’ Alliance working together with Councillor Winston Johnston, local Ian Russell and Council’s Parks and Gardens team.

This is just one of the projects aiming to beautify the Maleny area. Councillor Johnston is delighted with the outcome, saying "What a fantastic job all involved have done, its a wonderful entry statement for Maleny and I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work and commitment in making this happen”. And there is more to come - with the Street Gardeners’ Alliance members planning on delivering further beauti cation projects for the town. All are welcome to join and if you are interested, or for more info. please contact Winston by email at:

Historic Pattemore House Open this Saturday The Friends of Pattemore House were very proud to participate in the Sunshine Coast Open House event last Saturday. 70 visitors enjoyed a visit to “Fairview” (Pattemore House) throughout the day to see Maleny's emerging pioneer design and architecture skills from the turn of the century - as represented by the 1906/7 farmhouse. Four Pattemore brothers built "Fairview" for their parents (JR and Emily) by felling and pitsawing white beech growing on their property. They skilfully created boards from the felled logs, then painstakingly hand-planed and dressed the boards into the tongue and groove and beaded interior and exterior boards that have stood the test of time, giving visitors today the chance to see how it was done and what they created. Displays show the tools used and the early pitsawing methods employed by the Pattemore, who went on to help build other dwellings in Maleny. Pattemore House is again open to the public this Saturday 30th October, from 1 - 4 pm. For great local history, home-made and very scrumptious afternoon teas, seasonal jams, lemon curd, pickles and much more, all are welcome. $5 entry (kids free) plenty of parking. Pattemore House is located at15, Porters Lane North Maleny. With thanks to Marsha Fotographie for the image.

Great news - the RSL’s famous "Digger's Dining" has now re-opened.

I spent a most enjoyable Friday afternoon at Conondale State School last week. The Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club were awarding the winners of their “Convince Us!” public speaking competition. Congratulations to Johnny, Lily and Aidan In turn, Principal Mr Willis thanked the Lions for their incredible generosity and donation that allowed the school to install smart screens in each teaching space. M

aleny and Hinterland Real Estate 3rd Division side travelled to Nambour on Saturday. Losing the toss, the Maleny Redbacks were sent in to the eld on what seemed to be a bowler friendly pitch. Opening bowlers, Brock Barry and Jack Williams took advantage of the conditions having Nambour under early pressure. A near miss off the bowling of Williams, allowed Barry to continue to apply pressure and secure the rst wicket via an LBW. Dan Hand then came on to bowl and took full control of the game. Hand made the most of the conditions, having the Nambour batters in all sorts claiming 4 wickets in his rst spell. Greg Corkin then took over from Hand, beating the batters with a genuine lack of pace. Corkin claimed 2 wickets off his 8 overs. Hamish White also grabbed a scalp, before Hand returned to the bowling crease. Hand once again proved unplayable, snaring another two wickets to secure the amazing gures of 6 for 24 off 8 overs. In the end, Nambour were bowled out for 143 runs. The Redbacks then had their turn at bat. Openers Jonty Corkin and Yani Thimios started the innings well, assisted by some short and wayward bowling.

MPR then had their turn at bat. Liam and K-Diss scored 21 runs each, with K-Diss also hitting the rst six of the season. Keeley was MPR’s star with the bat scoring an elegant 32 runs. At the end of MPR's 18 overs they had scored 136 runs off the bat. With 5 runs added for every wicket taken, the scorers were under pressure. In the end, after many calculations both Redbacks sides ended on 201 runs, with the game nishing in a tie. Players of the Match were Keeley for MPR and Beau for Maleny Redbacks.

Winning the bat ip, the Maleny Redbacks chose to bat rst. The battle was intense, with some great running between wickets and numerous lusty blows. Oliver M (23 runs) and Beau (29 runs) were leading run scorers for the Maleny team. At the end of their 18 overs Maleny had amassed 141 runs.

Cameron Kronk steadied the innings with an aggressive 26 runs, before Hand once again took control of the game scoring a vital 34 runs. The constant loss of wickets meant the Redbacks soon found themselves in trouble being 9 for 119 in the 27th over.

Next week sees both teams travel to Glasshouse to play.

At 0 for 35 off 8 overs the Maleny team was cruising. Corkin was soon dismissed for 24 runs. This was then followed by two interesting failed running attempts and the Redbacks were in trouble at 4 for 56.

Hairdressers with Hearts

Showgirl State Finals 2021

A new training program rolling out across the region will equip local hair, beauty and massage professionals with the skills to recognise signs of domestic violence and elder abuse during their clients’ routine visits.

Maleny’s Chloe Lanham won the Miss Showgirl at the Maleny Show Societ this year, then went to win the 2021 Near North Coast Sub Chamber Finals.

Up to 40 individuals across the four industries will now have the chance to complete an accredited online training program through the Hairdressers with Hearts organisation thanks to funding from Sunshine Coast Council.

That means Chloe is competing in the State Finals and as part of that took in a visit to Queensland Parliament last Thursday. All the best and good luck Chloe!

Maleny’s New Emergency Services Facility Almost Ready The new $5 million multipurpose emergency services facility at Maleny is on track to be operational next month. The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES), Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) and State Emergency Service (SES) will soon have a new purpose-built depot, of ces and training facilities on the corner of Macadamia Drive and Dixon Avenue on the western side of Maleny, just up the road from the police station and Queensland Ambulance. The new facility will bring an end to the annual SES and RFB routine of moving out of sheds at Maleny Showgrounds for the Maleny Show. A QFES spokesperson said practical completion is anticipated for late October, with the of cial opening slated for December 9.

The program received a huge push from the Speak Up Now – Stop Domestic Violence Maleny and Blackall Range group, which originally made the request to council after hosting a successful forum that included a guest speaker from Hairdressers with Hearts. One of the group’s founders, Val France, said ten local hairdressers, ve barbers, one beautician and one massage therapist had already registered for the training. “All the hairdressers, barbers and beauticians have told me that over the years they have seen a high number of clients who they believe were victims of either domestic violence or elder abuse,” Val said. “They know their long-term clients and recognise the changes in them between appointments. They now feel comfortable being able to do something positive and practical to help those clients.” (With thanks to Glass Country and Maleny News for this article and photo) The Crooked Fringe (Witta) staff, proudly participating in Hairdressers with Hearts

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny There was no play on Thursday 21st because of rain – a pity because Wallace Roy had mown the lawn to perfection.

Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged by 2.30.

Saturday 23rd Six adults and four teenagers celebrated a birthday party for one of the adults (Toni). Fun and frivolity decorated the lawn. Golf croquet was played casually enough to remind Toni of playing garden croquet in London.

Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am

Sunday 24th Donna Manning and Kath Smith were unstoppable against Lynette Evans in their game. Lynette played well making some good roquets and executing creditable plans. Donna and Kath, however found some form mid-game to cement a ne win for their team 15 – 9. The other game of the day was a doubles match between a team consisting of Vince Carbery and Nick Cram playing against Val Carbery and Ken Barker. Ken and Val won 21 – 8.

For details contact, or Contact Sarah Widin President 0417 640 704. There is also much information about the club on the web site below. https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au Follow on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/rangecroquetclub/? __tn__=HHH-R

Croquet can seem a fussy game sometimes but, when it comes to measuring in a ball that has gone out, even the most easy-going referee will chip you if you are casual about it. Nine times out of ten it doesn’t matter, but sometimes one or two centimetres can make a big difference to a critical leave. In the attached photo a member of our club, who will remain nameless, demonstrates the correct stance, butt to the centre of the lawn, focussing on the point where the ball left the lawn, and mallet handle at a right angle to the border. Start times on play days, Thursday, and Sunday, have changed because of hotter weather. They are now 2.00 for 2.30 p.m. Play days: Thursday and
