Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter History of Maleny Weather Records Weather is always a topic of conversation in Maleny but never more so than last week. An extreme wet weather event saw 700 mm of rain fall in Maleny from Wednesday 23rd to Sunday 27th February. Homes, businesses and farms were inundated, roads were cut by ood waters, creeks and dams over owed, branches, mud and rocks tumbled over local roads and huge slips appeared. The Obi lapped threateningly at the bridge in town. In January 1974, Maleny registered 1534.4mm rain, or 60 and a half inches. Maleny’s highest monthly rainfall was in the Great Flood of February 1893 with 2733mm, or over 109 inches. Our Maleny weather records go back to 1885 partly due to the foresight of Clement Wragge. Wragge was Queensland’s rst government meteorologist and had the foresight to set up a rain recording station at Maleny; we now have over 120 years of accurate records. Born in England in 1852, the son of a solicitor, he trained in law. But Bragge's love of natural science proved too much and he ran away to sea where he learned navigation, astronomy and meteorology. He arrived in Australia to take up his appointment as Government Meteorologist of Queensland on 1st January 1887.

Munich and Paris – and later improved upon by Inigo Jones. Wragge had been so impressed with Inigo’s ability as a schoolboy that he recruited him as his assistant in 1888. Another rst for Wragge was naming of tropical cyclones, using the Greek alphabet, progressing through Greek and Roman mythology and nally to names of politicians of the day, on the grounds that both were ‘national disasters’. The system of naming of cyclones lapsed for many years but was resumed by the BOM in 1963. Inigo Jones became a full-time forecaster and lecturer in 1927 and founded the privately operated Crohamhurst Observatory in south-east Queensland. Jones died at home on his farm at Crohamhurst, Queensland. His assistant Lennox Walker expanded Jones’ theories and continued marketing long range forecasts until 2000, when he passed the business over to his own son Hayden Walker. Crohamhurst Observatory was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 2008. Extracts about Clement Wragge thanks to Alan Still’s Maleny Weather History page at: http://www.malenywx.com/weatherhistory/

In an incredibly short space of time he had established 400 rain recording stations, including Maleny, and 100 synoptic weather stations, including Crohamhurst Observatory, near Peachester. It was here under the guidance of his pupil and assistant, Inigo Jones, the observatory was to become a world famous centre for long range forecasting using a European technique of 30 year cycles that Wragge had learned about at one of the International Meteorological Conferences he had attended in

Lake Baroon is Full!

It’s actually sitting at 112.5% according to SEQ Water. Baroon Pocket Dam was built across Obi Obi Creek and completed in 1989. Located between Maleny and Montville in the Sunshine Coast, Baroon Pocket Dam supplies drinking water to the region as part of the SEQ Water Grid. It is an un-gated dam, meaning that when it reaches 100 per cent capacity, water ows over the spillway and safely out of the dam. It looks spectacular at present. The highest February rainfall ever recorded at Maleny was in 1893, with 2733 mm, or over 109 inches, well in excess of the average annual rainfall. It is said the Obi-Obi Creek rose to an enormous height, reaching a point in Maple Street above Coral Street, which would have been submerged. It was during this tropical storm that Steamer SS Dicky was shipwrecked on a Caloundra beach, Dicky Beach to be named after her.

Sports Fields Flooded

Last week’s wild weather will also mean a major clean-up operation for the district’s playing and sports elds. Spare a thought for the many volunteers who will be mopping up change rooms, clearing debris from facilities and trying to repair and restore playing surfaces. Witta Rec Club (pictured) became a lake, the Maleny Golf Club’s course (also pictured) more resembled the Lake District and the Maleny Showgrounds campers quickly scrambled for any high ground they could nd, fearing the Obi would wash them away.

Please be patient whilst the clean-ups take place for all grounds in the district to be able to operate again.

Great Obi Clean Up 2022 Guess what time it is? Yep, time for another Great Obi Clean Up! BYO gloves and cheerful dispositions, and we will bring the rest. When: Sunday 6th March @ 7.30am Where: Tesch Park (next to the library) Bring: gloves, covered footwear, preferably long pants/ sleeves, hats, sunscreen & mozzie spray and A happy smile! Commemorative coin celebrates 100 years of CWA The Perth Mint has released a $1 commemorative coin to celebrate the Centenary of the Country Women’s Association in New South Wales and Queensland and acknowledge 100 years of service and advocacy for country women and their families. The Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) was founded in August 1922 to provide a window of relief from the tyranny of distance for rural women by offering friendship, support and connection. The founding president was remarkable and quintessential countrywoman Ruth Fairfax. By 1928 there were 283 branches with 13,000 members across Queensland and by 1936 there were branches across the country. The Country Women’s Association of Australia is now the nation’s largest nongovernment organisation for women with 44,000 members. The commemorative coin’s design portrays the association’s ability to uplift women’s spirits, providing them

with support and a voice while raising awareness about equality for women living in remote country regions and towns. The coin features an intricate pattern of a cotton doily in a nod to the CWA’s well-known skills in crafts and cooking which are used for fundraising in their support of various causes. Within the doily are abstract female gures holding hands to show the association’s strong network of support, friendship and collaboration. The inner circle of the design symbolises a hot country sun, which is gold-plated on the SGP version. Inside the sun is a lone silhouette of a country mother and child, with the space around them illustrating country isolation. Within her shadow are eight female gures which represent each state/ territory that make up the Country Women’s Association of Australia. The QCWA continues to provide a space for Queensland women to connect, collaborate, and impact communities. The state currently has more than 200 branches and over 3500 members. The CWA coin is available for purchase with a recommended retail price of $12.50. Additionally, there is a special gold-plated (SGP) commemorative coin with a RRP of $80. For more information, contact Christine King on 0407 124 637 To see and purchase the coin, visit https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/centenary-of-the-country-womensassociation-cwa

Please Observe Signage

Emergency Services are pleading with motorists to observe Road Closed signage and to stay off the roads and highways if you don’t need to travel. There have been many incidents of drivers ignoring signage and putting themselves and others at risk. Even though the heavy rain has ceased, the damage left in the wake of last week’s extreme weather event has seen huge slips (such as at Hovard Road, Bald Knob, pictured) there are large potholes, and many local roads and bridges are severely damaged. Authorities will need time to conduct repairs and ask that everyone continues to watch out and be very careful.

It is an outdoor venue with shelter under a deep verandah in case of rain. The venue is at the end of Parkland Drive, off Porters Lane, North Maleny.

Here’s a site that helps to check the status of the roads you may be planning to travel on: https://roads.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Home/ AddressSearch

Covid Proof of vaccination

Proof of vaccination veri es that a person is fully vaccinated. You must show either a printed or electronic form before entering a business establishment or venue. Masks have been re-introduced under certain circumstances. You will still need to use the Check-In Qld app at public venues.

They were each in different blocks and played well to only lose one game apiece before the nal game on Sunday afternoon. This meant that they played off for 3rd (the “plate”). Ken won a close game while the overall winner of the tournament was Bruce Ford from Stephens Club, Brisbane.

for games to be arranged at 2.15 and started by 2.30.

The tournament was well attended and well run. Many thanks to Bribie for their hospitality in particular to Gwen Connelly and her crew for administration, and also to Greg Whymark tournament referee and his subordinate referees.

The rest of the week was washed out. Inordinately heavy rain from Tuesday to Sunday meant that no play took place on either of our “play days”. It also meant that the regular Saturday morning training sessions which have become very popular amongst our players was cancelled. The attached photo, looking from corner II to corner IV on lawn one, taken by Sarah Widin after an inspection of the lawn might give some clue as to why!

The Maleny Show-grounds courts were opened July 26th, 1993 following the club using a court at Ted Singletons private residence.

Support the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary Soon we begin the pennants competition. On the 9th March the Lochwood team (association div 1 and 2) plays at home against Bribie and on the 10th the Ranbour team (ricochet) plays in Maleny against Headland Buderim. Spectators are asked not to bring noise making machines as this is very uncool in a croquet competition. The Bray competition (association div 3 and 4) kicks off at Caloundra on the 19th. Good luck to all teams. Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 2 pm
