Caloundra Overpass with Bruce Highway finally opened After years of traf c disruptions nally the completion of the largest single infrastructure project ever undertaken on the Sunshine Coast the $932 million upgrade to the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Rd and Sunshine Motorway - has arrived. This project has seen the Bruce Highway upgraded to six lanes. This project was 80% funded by the Federal Government and 20% by the Queensland Government.

More than 9km of new active transport infrastructure have been provided for people walking and riding bikes. This project included Australia’s rst Diverging Diamond Interchange at Caloundra Road along with environmental measures such as 49 fauna escape poles, a fauna rope ladder and 162 metres of fauna logs. It also included the planting of more than 245,000 plants, trees and shrubs.

Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston To contact Cr Winston Johnston winston.johnston@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Is your pool summer-ready? Like many of us, swimming pools need to get their summer body ready and spring is the perfect time to do your pool safety check. So, use this time to spring into action because swimming pool safety is a joint responsibility. Council can regulate and educate but it’s up to all swimming pool owners to undertake regular checks to ensure their swimming pool barriers are compliant. Swimming pool owners are reminded that all pools, including spas and some portable pools need to comply with pool safety standards. The Queensland pool safety standards regulate the height and strength of barriers, nonclimbable zones, gate latching requirements and preventing direct access from a building into a pool area. Pools capable of holding more than 300mm in depth, must comply with the Queensland pool safety standard. This includes: swimming pools spas portable and in atable swimming pools. To ensure your pool is compliant: check you have a building approval, and get advice from a pool safety inspector about how to ensure your pool complies or Contact a pool safety inspector to do a formal inspection with a view to getting a pool safety certi cate. Be sure your swimming pool is summer ready by visiting council’s website or the Queensland Building and Construction Commission website for more information about pool safety compliance.

Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell

Joyce Newton Bursary

Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation

I have been hard at work trying to select this year’s winner of the Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary. Recently, Joyce’s daughter Jennifer Newton Tunley along with Sandy Zurbrinich from the Sunshine Coast Business Council and I interviewed three outstanding young individuals for this years Bursary. We have a very dif cult decision to make. At this stage the nal decision has not been completed, but soon will be. To keep up to date with this decision keep an eye on my Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/AndrewPowellMP Jen Tunley said that she was impressed with the standard of the applicants for this award and her mum, Joyce Newton would be proud of all applicants.

The Queensland Parliament has just passed the Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation. Access to voluntary assisted dying will not be available until 1 January 2023, when the law comes into place. The Parliament was able to conduct this debate with an extraordinary level of respect for the divergent views held by Members and Queenslanders more broadly. The Bill sets out a legal process for people who are suffering and dying from an advanced and progressive life-limiting condition the right to choose the timing and circumstances of their death. Many of you will know I voted against the laws. If you’d like a full explanation of why please email my of ce at Glass.House@parliament.qld.gov.au I would ask, if you make a comment, you do so respectfully. Any in ammatory remarks will be moderated.

Starting the conversation about online safet with Mr. Andrew Wallace. Federal MP for Fisher

The Federal Government’s strong commitment to protecting Australians living with a disability has been underlined, with the arrest of a man for allegedly defrauding the NDIS of more than $120,000.

All Australians suffer when public money is defrauded. the Federal Government recently extended the NDIS Fraud Taskforce on an inde nite basis. Anyone with concerns that fraud is being committed against the NDIS should contact the NDIS fraud hotline on 1800 650 717.

This is another warning to anyone out there considering ripping off funding intended for NDIS participants that the Government is serious about taking strong action to protect taxpayers against fraud https://minister.homeaffairs.gov.au/KarenAndrews/ Pages/morrison-gvt-cracks-down-on-ndis-fraud.aspx

As part of their program to ensure that volunteers of the Maleny Visitor Information Centre have the necessary information to advise visitors to our area of some o the many places to visit they recently visited the Nut Factory at Yandina.

A visit to the factory helps to uncover the history and health bene ts of the Australian macadamia. On the visit it is possible to view factory processing, chocolate panning and roasting from the retail store. The macadamia is native to Australia, particularly north eastern New South Wales and central and south eastern Queensland. There is a large commercial farm situated in Maleny.

Factory”

It is a little realised fact that the German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt collected the macadamia in the 1840s from the Conondale ranges near Maleny. However, the plant was not of cially named until 1857. Ferdinand von Mueller, a British botanist, named it after Dr John Macadam, a chemist, medical man and member of the legislative assembly for Castlemaine in Victoria. Survey about Business Red Tape The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) has for a number of years been committed to addressing this signi cant issue and working with all levels of government to not only highlight the impact that red tape has on business but to also identify opportunities for reform.

Why Shop Locally? While it may not be possible to source all our needs from our local retailers and tradesman, here are a few reasons to think twice before you make your next purchase:

Have your say to help reduce red tape burden on Queensland businesses. Red tape is one of the most signi cant issues for your business in 2021. We need your input to understand how and where it impacts Queensland businesses the most. Regulatory compliance – the paperwork, forms, applications, procedures, reports, audits, permits and licenses businesses face daily can cost you valuable time and money.

It Creates local jobs and it is personal;

Inef cient regulation is a major constraint on business growth, productivity and investment. It's also reducing Queensland’s competitiveness at a time when our economy is already combating challenges stemming from COVID-19.

Shopping locally helps Australia grow;

Have your say in CCIQ’s Red Tape Survey to help us highlight to government how it is adding to the cost of running your business, reducing employment opportunities and is unnecessarily increasing the cost of living for all Queenslanders. Take the Survey:

Volunteer with Maleny RFB We are looking for volunteers

Maleny RFB is part of Rural Fire Service Queensland. The Maleny Group covers over 100 sq kilometres and have 3 re ghting trucks and 1 Command Vehicle. The group also assists other volunteer groups. We are always looking for more volunteers so if you think you can help come along and join our friendly group. The oncoming re season has already started even though it is a little early. The drier winter period has helped dry out the environment and res will burn a bit hotter. Already we have seen out of control res in bushland in neighbouring re brigade areas. For those in rural settings and had thought that they would do some early prevention burning, I think it is now a little too late for most as the weather is already turning to summer like conditions. Another way in which you could assist is to ensure that our re trucks are able to access your property in a bush re emergency. Now is the time to make sure of that - not when the re is arriving.

If the answer is no, now is the time to change that in time for bush re season. It’s important our vehicles can make it on and off your property. You can help us by… Displaying a prominent house or lot number so we can nd your address quickly. Ensuring the access to your property is at least 4 metres wide with a 4-metre high clearance, and turn-around area. This will help our vehicles enter, leave and move around your property. A huge thank you must go out to Maleny Supa IGA and their amazing deli department for cooking up a storm for the hungry crews recently out at a re. This simple assistance at the time is much appreciated as the apparent little things such as food and water are important, but often it is too busy to really take the time to make arrangements for those facilities.

But Jared is not Superman 24/7 - if you see him, let him know you are there if you can. Sporting a colourful shirt from Trade Mutt in recognition of the need for blokes to strike up conversation, Jared looks so bright on the outside, but sometimes, underneath, there are real shades of grey. Trade Mutt are an Australian workwear brand that aims to make tradies and workers of all kinds look and feel great at work, and in doing so, try to reduce the rate of male suicide in Australia. The loud and vibrant shirts act as a catalyst to starting the conversation around mental health in men, a topic that has been hard to approach in the past for blokes, mostly due to the attached stigmas and perceived weakness.

Truthful Jones says

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions Take a good look at your power bill. You know that it is a major expense now, especially as winter starts to take hold. But do you know how it comes to get that big? The Energy companies tell us regularly it is because of the people with solar panels ripping off the system and generating their own power thus making those without solar panels to subsidise those who do not have them. The power industry big players can espouse that idea until the cows come home, but it is a crock of shit. Whilst the cost of power has risen at record speeds the main ingredient of electricity - coal has dropped in price just as dramatically, over 50%. The real cost has been caused by the blatant overspending on the delivery network - much of which was not needed. If you think that the Electricity Regulator was going to keep the power companies honest then think again. The Electricity Regulator Body is made up of those authorities that it is designed to regulate. When setting prices the Electricity Regulating Authority’s main consideration to towards the pro t margins of the big electrical companies. Most of your electricity bill goes towards the blatant overspending on the network and overin ated interest payments on the money borrowed to make those network improvements. This interest cost is industry assessed, not actually what the industry actually pays to borrow that money. This is an extra pro t of over 4% on money borrowed. Now just to add to the insult there is a push from the Regulating Authorities to add an extra tax or charge on solar panel users to have power run back into the network. Presently the average feed-in tariff paid to solar contributors is between 8 – 15 cents per kilowatt hour. At the present time consumers are paying about 25 cents per kilowatt hour. Unfortunately, governments sold the public a “dead dog” when the privatised the electrical Industry.

And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t” That one day last week he was in Maleny at Maple Street Meats Butchery shop when a dog walks in and the butcher shoos him away. About 5 minutes later he comes back with $10 and a note saying “2kgs of steak” surprised the butcher reluctantly takes the money and hands him a bag with the meat. As the dog left the butcher shop, the butcher, Blair closed down the shop and decided to follow the dog. The dog gets to the bus stop in Maple Street and waits. Soon the bus arrives and the dog pulls a ticket out of its collar, gives it to the driver and hops on. Blair follows him to see what was going to happen. The dog got off of the bus on Balmoral Road and began to walk still not have eaten the meat. Finally the dog walks up to a house over the road from Maleny Cheese factory and sets the meat down. The dog backs up and charges and slams into the door. He does this about twice. Finally a man opens the door and starts yelling at the dog calling him stupid and retard- ed. Blair nds this horrible so he talks to the man and says “STUPID?! This dog went to my shop, paid for meat and took it on the bus nding his way back home perfectly. HOW IS HE STUPID??!” The man then replied saying, “Yes, that’s all great but he forgot the key for the 3rd time this week!” Morale: Sometimes you just cannot please some people. Caloundra

- 1950’s

“The seaside fishing village” Caloundra, a coastal township approximately 80 km north of central Brisbane. It is thought that the name was derived from an Aboriginal word describing Queensland beech trees, of which several species are found in coastal rain forests.

Caloundra “WW!! awakens it from slumber”

Even though Caloundra was rst settled in the late 1870’s, the rst houses were built in about 1875 and the rst major land sales were set to go ahead in 1883, the area did not go ahead at any great speed. A school of arts was built in1927, a life-saving service began on Kings Beach in 1933 and a picture theatre was opened in 1937.

Then came WW11 and Caloundra began to come alive because of defensive positions in both Caloundra and Bribie Island where there were three radar stations and forti cations as a protection for the port of Brisbane. During the 1950’s the areas population was approximately 5000 and it became a popular holiday destination for people from the then named North Coast

hinterland area. The area centred on the Landsborough Shire which was based in Landsborough township. Along the waterfront in Maloja Avenue were a number of bro shing shacks and a sh market which was run by the Clark family. Trawlers tied up in the channel in front of the sh market and proceeded out across the Caloundra bar to sh Moreton Bay. Continued next page

October is Seniors Month

Sculpture on the Edge

Celebrate Queensland Seniors Month in October with Sunshine Coast Libraries. Seniors Month runs from 1 to 31 October 2021.

ATTENTION ARTISTS - ENTRIES CLOSE IN A FEW WEEKS! Sculpture on the Edge is an outdoor sculpture exhibition held annually on the escarpment of the stunning Sunshine Coast hinterland at Spicers Tamarind Retreat. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the picturesque 18-acre property which provides a unique setting for site speci c works and installations.

The Maleny Library is running an android photography session on Wednesday October 6th between 10a.m. and 11.30a.m. Seniors Month recognises the valuable contribution of seniors in the community – whether as volunteers or in the workforce, community leaders or carers, grandparents, or advocates.

Once again Spicers Tamarind Retreat partners with Sunshine Coast Arts Foundation to present the 2021 Sculpture on the Edge Awards.

The month of celebration also provides opportunities to promote positive community attitudes towards older people. It allows community participation and enhanced community connection that aligns with the Queensland Government and Council on the Ageing (COTA) vision of building age-friendly communities in Queensland.

The 2021 Sculpture on the Edge Awards will be announced at a twilight viewing and opening event to be held at Spicers Tamarind Retreat on Friday 22nd October and runs until November 7th, 2021.. This event is open FREE to the public from 4p.m. on Friday 22nd October.

Connecting with one another has never been more important. Using Social Connections as a theme, Seniors Month provides people of all ages, cultures, and abilities to connect through inclusive events and activities.

Submissions are closing to design site-speci c sculpture/s to be installed and nestled amongst the tranquil natural surrounds of Spicers Tamarind Retreat in Maleny on the Sunshine Coast’s Hinterland from October 22-November 7, 2021.

Because you are growing older in age does not mean that you cannot be younger inside and still enjoy those activities that provided joys over many tears.

The Award seeks to celebrate and showcase site speci c sculpture with a First prize of $10,000, 1,0000 encouragement award & $500 people’s choice award.

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top”

“Bringing Movies to the Outback”

This is what brings me the most joy, doing movie nights and fundraising, currently at Sunset Top Tourist Park for the next few days waiting for the Drover's Camp Festival on in Camooweal before hitting the territory

Just Passed a mileston ———————$25,000 raised for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia

Movie nights on remote properties/ stations is always something I’m happy to do for a donation when I’m passing through an area. And yes I have a small jumping castle for the kids - or slightly drunk uncles. I have now reachedf $25,000 in donations for The RFDS = hopefully much more still to come! Unfortunately I have now smashed my solar panel. This is just one more little things that is making this trip a bit of an unknown. Here's to a cheeky-faced young Australian with a big heart and n even bigger dream. Bon voyage from Maleny, and safe travels Sam. You can follow Sam’s adventures via his Facebook Page at “The Travelling Jackaroo”

Who

Remembers

this?

Fortitude Valley, Brisbane 1960 From the early 1900s through to the 1960s, the thriving shopping precinct was dominated by McWhirters, Beirne's and, later, Overells' department stores. The Overells Building was completed in 1907. They were ultimately bought out by the Myer, David Jones and Waltons chains respectively with Overells being bought by Walton in 1956. These were the days when it was something special to go “to town shopping” and a woman could wear her housedress with the addition of fancier accessories, such as a pearl necklace, earrings, gloves, a hat, heels, and a purse. Men generally wore a suit and tie and a pork pie hat. It was a great fun time for families. Note the tram and the electric “trolley bus” - electric vehicles before their time!.
