Maleny River Centre businesses hold “Biggest Morning Tea”

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is a community event that is held on May 25th that raises vital funds to make a big difference for those impacted by cancer. The Maleny Riverside Businesses hosted their morning tea at the Centre.

Sadly, all of us will be impacted by cancer at some point in our lives, and this is exactly what inspires so many of our communities to host a Biggest Morning Tea to raise funds for cancer research.

Unfortunately, 1 in 2 Australians are diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea usually falls on the last Thursday of May each year and has done so since 1994 raising millions of dollars for the Cancer Council of Australia.

The businesses in the Maleny Riverside Shopping Centre held their first Biggest Morning Tea on May 25th and set a target of raising at least $5000.00. The latest total reached got to $6148,00 with more still coming in.

Organiser Jim Goulton of Maleny Jewellers said that all the Riverside businesses had come together to host this important event. The businesses donated about $2,000 of amazing prices to be won in the various raffles drawn on the day. This event was so successful because of the amazing Maleny District community spirit!”

Investment in research has helped increase cancer survival rates from 49% in the 1980s to 69% today. Because of research, more people are surviving cancer than ever before. And every day, brilliant Australian researchers are working to unlock more of cancer’s secrets.

In Australia, around 930 women are expected to be diagnosed with cervical cancer this year alone. It is hoped that research will eliminate cervical cancer in Australia by as early as 2028.

Maleny Singers Present

Maleny Singers this year present something a bit different in a Short Dramatic Opera by Pietro Mascagni, 'Cavalleria Rusticana’.

Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana’ was the most spectaculay opera of his career.

The story is of betrayal and revenge - set in Sicily, the action centres around local ex-soldier, Turiddu who is secretly romancing the vivacious Lola who is the wife, however, of big-shot mafioso businessman, Alfio. Then there is the jilted girlfriend Santuzza, this all adds to the drama.

Another first for us is our collaboration with Kim Kirkman and The Inspiration Project Choir. Of course we also have the backing of the 30piece magnificent Maleny Performing Arts Orchestra to be conducted by the talented Kim Kirkman.

The performance will be presented as a dramatised 'concert' including a story narration so you can keep up with the drama of the piece.

We introduce some new singers along with many of your favourite locals as well.

The Opera is presented in two parts lasting approximately 1.5hrs including interval.

It will be held on June 10th - 11th - 17th and 18th June at 3p.m. at the Maleny Community Centre. Tickets are available at the Maleny Information Centre, at the door or online at:

Maleny Show Year Unknown! “Maleny Show-grounds hosting Shows for 100 years”

The Maleny Agricultural Show has been held on the same grounds since inception in 1923. The photo below shows just how the ground. facilities have changed in that 100 years, mostly since the 1970’s.

Who remembers the old typewriter?

The QWERTY keyboard layout, developed for typewriters in the 1870s, remains de facto standard for computer keyboards. Many people would remember typing lessons at school when you would be forced to wear a “bib” to stop you seeing the keys thus learning their position without looking.

In 1927 the first Show Ball was held in the Maleny School of Arts to honour the hardworking pioneers of the district. This year’s show, being held today (June 2nd) marks 100 years since the first show.

Landsborough Rail to light up the town!!!

Queensland Rail are building a 350 space car park at Landsborough, and concerns are mounting as Queensland Rail have flagged already that they will not adopt dark sky lighting consistent with the Australian Government National Light pollution Guidelines, the Sunshine Coast Urban Lighting Master Plan, the Guidelines of the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance or the International Dark Sky Association.

The Sunshine Coast hinterland is the LAST area of coastal South East Queensland that is not heavily light polluted and its dark skies are highly valued by its residents and visitors.

Sunshine Cost Council have raised the concern with Queensland Rail but it seems Queensland Rail do not wish to incorporate dark sky policies into their new build even at this early stage.

Every inappropriate light contributes to light pollution that spreads over 300kms from its source. Maleny Observatories astronomist Dr Ken Wishaw once again is heading the community to support our

neighbouring town of Landsborough in their appeal to Queensland Rail to implement dark sky policies.

There is a growing number of visitors coming to the hinterland specifically to enjoy the night sky, that has the potential to become a significant tourism drawcard. If the car park and the ongoing long term upgrading of the northern rail line use inappropriate lighting, all this is at risk. .

Andrew Powell is aware of this latest news and the feeling is that community pressure is needed to help his investigations at the state government level.

Defence Strategic Review & Australia's Strategic Future

The long-awaited Defence Strategic Review (“DSR”) has been touted by the Federal Labor Government as the most significant review in 40 years. Unfortunately, the public version of the Government’s response to the DSR will effectively gut the Australian Army.

The Government’s push to realise long-range strike capability, while in itself a good thing, comes at the expense of hundreds of Infantry Fighting Vehicles which were set to replace the 60-year-old M113 armoured personnel carriers which saw service in Vietnam. No war has ever been won purely in the air and at sea. In 2023, the domains of land, space and cyber have never been more important. A credible fighting infantry supported by

armour and artillery is essential. The gutting of 321 IFVs from 450 to 129 units will leave Australia’s infantry exposed, as will the decision to cut two regiments of self-propelled Howitzers down to one.

I welcome the Government’s decision to implement a National Defence Strategy, though I’m concerned that we won’t see it until June 2024. At the same time, I’m calling for a whole-of-nation National Security Strategy.

The Government has also missed an opportunity to establish a standalone statutory parliamentary committee for defence, much like the PJCIS, which would allow for greater probity and accountability without risking the compromise of defence intelligence. It just shows that, once again, our Labor is putting our strategic future at risk

Grants for rural property owners Now Open

Rural landowners within Division 5 can apply now for financial help to complete on-ground environment projects on their private property, via the Sunshine Coast Council’s Landholder Environment Grants.

Grants of up to $15,000 are available for projects like bush regeneration; reducing sediment loss on farms; control of environmental weeds; modifying nonboundary fencing to make it wildlife friendly; revegetation of degraded areas; and to establish vegetation corridors and buffer zones.

Preparation

Application

Ensure all areas to be coated are extremely well ventilated during and after application. Always test on a small area prior to initial application. 2 coats recommended, 3 on softwood if required. Apply at room temperature. Fiddes Premier Wood Varnish is formulated for application directly and does not require thinning.

First Coat

Stir contents thoroughly before and during use, and apply in a warm, wellventilated room. Apply THINLY using a good quality bristle or synthetic brush or a short nap microfibre roller and lay EVENLY, following the direction of the grain. Leave to dry 2-3 hours in warm, dry well-ventilated conditions.

Second Coat

Apply as first coat, THINLY, allowing good ventilation. Leave to dry 2-3 hours in warm, dry well-ventilated conditions. Clean applicator with water.

Vandalism closes Mount Beerwah to the public

Vandals have used a power tool to cut graffiti into a section of the rock face near the base of the summit route on Mt Beerwah.

Glass House Mountain park rangers found the damage on May 20th, when they discovered a rock at the base of Mt Beerwah had been defaced with the words “Jesus Saves, Just Ask”. Mount Beerwah is registered as a Significant Aboriginal Area for the Jinibaras peoples.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, with the support of the Jinibara People, is temporarily closing Mount Beerwah to allow for repairs and reparations and cultural healing of the site.

Visitors are advised to observe all signage, barriers and to not enter closed areas.

Queensland Police Service and QPWS are investigating this incident and are asking for anyone with information to call the department on (07) 5494 3983, or make an anonymous call on 1300 130 372.

A decision has been made by The Australian Energy Regulator on electricity prices as from July 1st, 2023. This decision means that Queenslanders are set get an average increase of approximately $350 per annum which is up about 22%.

Queenslanders with a concession card, on the pension or are receiving family tax benefits A and B will qualify for a $500 rebate. The annual bill for a typical residential customer is expected to be in the vicinity of $1800 - $2000 per annum.

Wholesale power prices soared to record levels in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and a surging global demand for fossil fuels and a number of plant and equipment outages at Australian coal plants.

Electric Vehicles are becoming more common on Queensland roads, even in Maleny they are more common that a couple of years ago with a number of Tesla fully electric vehicles seen daily around town.

There are many benefits of electric vehicles (EVs) over conventional petrol or diesel cars. The main benefits are said to be that a “Battery Electric Vehicle” has fewer moving parts than a conventional petrol/diesel car. Servicing is relatively easy, less frequent and overall cheaper than a petrol/diesel vehicle. Not everything is good for electric vehicles. The expected life of an EV's battery pack is between 10 and 12 years and at this stage their replacement is expensive.

Right from the start there is an amount of greenhouse gasses and emissions produced in the making of the vehicle and even more from the making of the battery. Is this enough to off set the total emissions over the life of the vehicle?

Charging from the grid will also produce harmful emissions, unless it is charged exclusively from solar power direct. There is a long way to go in developing electric vehicles for efficiency..

We’re excited to be bringing you 'Dancing with Lughnasa' by Brian Friel- and Directed by Andrew Wallace. Dancing at Lughnasa is a 1990 play set in a cottage in County Donegal in 1936. It’s a household of five unmarried sisters who would all like to be married. The youngest has an illegitimate son, the eldest tries to keep preserve family respectability. But now the father of the child re-appears, full of seductive charm, while an elder brother has just returned after decades working as a priest in Africa and is strangely changed.

In the back hills there are still lingering pagan rituals, Lugh (pronounced ‘Loo’) being the ancient Celtic god of the harvest. The rhythms of family life play out against broader social tensions and economic hardship. You will enjoy meeting these fundamentally good-hearted and resilient people.

Man charged with murder of local Chris Gwin

A 68-year-old Maroochydore man, Paul Coughlan has been charged with the murder of Conondale man Chris Gwin between 10am and 1pm on Thursday May 18th, 2023.

A major search of the Caloundra Landfill + Resource Recovery Centre by police and SES volunteers has yielded a piece of clothing that police believe may have been worn during an alleged murder. Couglan has been remanded in custody until August 18th, 2023.

Maleny Visitor Information Centre

The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for profit, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny flavour along with information about places and events around the area.

The Centre is situated at 2/23 Maple Street, Maleny. It is open 7 days a week between 9.30am-4.00pm. Closed only on Good Friday and Christmas Day.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

Are the people off the Sunshine Coast being rated as second class? Deputy Premier Steven Miles has announced that there have been 1100 new land blocks approved and are now available at Caloundra South and Aura but can’t say if a major rail upgrade will be done by 2032.

The first planning for this rail line which includes just 37km to connect Maroochydore, Caloundra and Beerwah to Brisbane was was allegedly completed in 2001 but consideration has not been finalised as at this time. How long does it take?

This line was used as one carrot by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to attract votes to gain the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane. Now, according to Deputy Premier Steven Miles this might not be built by that time. This would just be but one more projects promised to gain political points then not provided.

The Sunshine Coast’s population is expected to increase by some 120,000 in the next 20 years.

The suburb of Aura is now closer to the goal of 20,000 homes which is anticipated to home about 69,000 people. For this number of new homes, the lack of decent public transport means car dependency becomes the norm thus creating traffic chaos, both within the southern Sunshine Coast area and on the main highway between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

Caloundra Road often turns into a frustrating carpark as more than 32,000 cars per day are using that roadway with an increasing number of 1100 of daily trips being experienced..

Between 7.15am – 9.15am and 3.45pm to 5.45pm when cars were banked up at the Aura roundabout in all directions leading to the main Sunshine Coast motorway.

All of this extra traffic has a flow-on effect on hinterland residents who have to also travel to Brisbane. Building more roads has little remedial effect on traffic density as by the time the new section is completed the traffic volume has continued to increase.

The immediate duplication of the Sunshine Coast heavy rail system to Gympie with an extension through Aura, Caloundra and onto Maroochydore is one way to help ease the density of local traffic volume.

This will also help to reduce emissions from vehicles thus assisting with reducing the affects of climate change because as traffic congestion increases, so too do fuel consumption and CO2 emissions..

In the last two issues I have been discussing the requirements of a valid Will. I thought it would be a good opportunity to continue the train of thought with what could happen should you die without a valid will. If a person dies without a valid Will, that person is said to have died “intestate”.

Dying without a valid will or ‘intestate’ can be very detrimental to your loved ones and also very expensive. Not only have you given away your ability to decide how your estate is to be distributed and to whom but you also run the risk of the costs of administering your estate increasing drastically and your estate being distributed to unintended beneficiaries.

One example of an unintended beneficiary is an estranged spouse from whom the deceased was not formally divorced. That estranged spouse will share in the deceased’s estate under the Queensland intestacy rules despite the deceased and the estranged spouse not being in a relationship at the time of death.

DYING WITHOUT A WILL: WHAT HAPPENS?

The Succession Act sets out the rules to be applied in situations of intestacy. Here are some examples:

• If you are married/de facto with no children, your spouse takes 100%;

• If you are married/de facto with one child your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided equally between the spouse and the child

• If you are married/de facto with two or more children your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided 1/3 for the spouse and 2/3 equally between the children.

In situations where you do not have any close relatives the rules provide that your estate must go to relatives that are further removed from you.

Made it to the world famous Betoota Hotel. The Betoota Hotel is located a relatively short 170 kilometres east of Birdsville in far south-west Queensland.

It’s truely a unique pub in how it’s old fashioned and the way you’d want a bush pub to be. if you’re travelling out to Birdsville, or even just on the way near there make sure you call in and say Gday, you’ll regret it if you don’t.

There’s some amazing vintage vehicles at the Betoota Hotel. As a history nut I was in absolute heaven. It is well worth a stopover to have a look on your way past that’s for sure.

The Betoota Pub is honestly in my top 5 pubs in Australia that I’ve been to so far. It’s family owned and honestly from the second you walk through the door you feel welcome.

I recently ran into Mary the founder of “Are You Bogged Mate?” in Birdsville, Queensland.

“Are You Bogged Mate?” is a rural men’s mental health charity that starts a conversation with the broader community about the rising issue of depression and suicide rates among men in rural Australia.

The founder of this amazing organisation is Mary who travels anywhere in the country spreading the message & talking about mental health in a very Aussie bloke kind of way. Check her out at:

The dirt track you take to get there is a few kms off the main road and you come across this beautiful pub on the hill. The building is almost 100 years old and it’s age is shown beautifully. The front bar is historic and iconic, and in the back section there’s the dinner area where they make home cooked feeds that are amazing.

Elaman Creek Bridge 1928

This photo is of the Elaman Creek Bridge on the occasion of official opening on the 13th October, 1928

The wooden traffic bridge was officially opened by the Main Roads Commission, Mr Kemp. It spanned Elaman Creek on the Maleny - Kenilworth Road, some ten miles from Maleny and was 'in the main survey route of the Great National Highway to connect Brisbane and Gympie as a road’.

Official guests included the Mayor of Brisbane, Alderman William Jolly, and the Chairman and councillors of the Landsborough Council.

The bridge was partly washed away by flood water during 1946 and was subsequently replaced during the winter months of 1994.
