Maleny Visitor Information Centre Volunteers “kick up their heels”
For the volunteers from the Maleny Visitor Information Centre it was time to celebrate another successful year of “telling other people where to go”.
They went to Tranquel Park Restaurant to check out another great Maleny restaurant - it is important to be able to speak with some authority about “good local eating places”.

Woolworths and Maleny IGA. suffer break-ins
On the 20th November, 2022 a number of premises in the Maleny, Landsborough and Beerwah areas have been targeted by thieves. Maleny Woolworths had a trolley full of cigarettes and an amount of cash stolen whilst other Maple Street businesses have been entered by up to 4 people in balaclavas. The offences occurred at about 2.04a.m. They were recorded on CCTV.
Then around 2.12am they attended another business on Bunya Street, Maleny from where mobile telephones and cigarettes were stolen.
Then at 2.30am they attended a business on Railway Street, Landsborough and stole cash and cigarettes.
They are travelling in stolen vehicles; a Mitsubishi Outlander, Reg no 142-EPS and BLACK 2011 BMW with Registration plates 269-BGS.
The BMW is also be linked to other property offences committed across Runcorn and Springwood, south of Brisbane. It had taken from Norval Street, Salisbury in Brisbane and has since been recovered.
The Mitsubishi used in these offences was taken from a Burrigan Street, Woodridge and is still currently outstanding.
They were the days when bread was delivered to the front door of the house.
In the 1930’s mostly delivery was done by horse and cart. I bet that most likely not acceptable in todays lifestyle!
On the night of November 30th a break-in occurred at Maleny Jewellers in The Riverside Centre. An attempt was made to smash open the rear door, however that was unsuccessful. The glass windows in the front of the shop were smashed and items valued at about $2000 which were on display in those cases were stolen. A considerable amount of damage was caused to the shop in this instance.
This is a good warning that people with criminal intent are around our area.

Council digitises parking tickets
The Sunshine Coast Council has introduced a ParkSmart program which is aimed at encouraging vehicle turnover, creating parking opportunities and allowing equitable and safe access to various locations across our region. This allows more customers to easily access our local small businesses.
The ParkSmart program relies on a vehicle, equipped with number plate recognition, highspeed cameras and advanced computer software. Where an offending vehicle is located infringement notices will be issued by post.
The system was first introduced into the Caloundra, Birtinya, Point Cartwright and Nicklin Way areas in July and is now being rolled out to new locations.
The system is also focused on providing a safer work environment for parking officers and reducing the risk of occupational violence.

2022 Estimates reveals the extent of Queensland Government’s waste
The Palaszczuk Government’s extraordinary incompetence has been exposed with Estimates revealing an extra $3 billion of taxpayers’ money has been wasted.
This money could have built two hospitals and employed thousands of nurses and doctors in the middle of a health crisis.
It is clear the Queensland Government consistently chooses politics and secrecy over people and transparency.
The list compiled from just the last two weeks of Estimates Hearings is as follows:
Wellcamp cost Queenslanders at least $220 million
A $2 million advertising strategy produced 2 tradies
Millions of dollars allocated to a Koala Lab was put into a new rollercoaster
Taxpayer money is being used to stop a report about Jackie Trad from being made public
30 complaints have been made to the CCC regarding the QBCC
Government never told energy retailers to provide power bill rebate
Cross River Rail has blown out to $8 billion Energy sector’s IT upgrade has blown out by $186 million
Ambulance ramping has hit a new level at 45%
Ambulance bypass is back They scrap targets to cover up woeful performance
Satellite Hospitals are delayed and over budget
They have failed to deliver on the promise to employ 6,000 teachers
Police numbers have failed to keep pace with population growth
It will take 25 years to deliver on the social housing promise
Almost $1 million was spent on the Caloundra Youth Jail before the project was cancelled Government trying to recoup $4 million of small business grants made in error
Queenslanders deserve so much better than this.

Why you should have an Air Dehumidifier
If you want your home to remain as comfortable as possible during the summer months, you should consider using a dehumidifier to reduce the amount of excessive moisture in the air.
With the present indications are that the atmosphere will remain humid throughout the next 4 to 6 months mould and mildew will continue to grow.
Using a dehumidifier during the summer also improves the air quality inside your home and can eliminate potential allergens like mould and mildew. A dehumidifier also reduces the chance of dust mites which thrive in high humidity areas and also eliminates odours.
Businesses
There have been an increase in email scams, with hackers targeting people with fake invoices. Between January and September 2022, Australians lost $424.8 million to scammers.
The ACCC says that scammers are relentlessly targeting Australian businesses.
In many instances busy business operators are paying invoices believing that they are genuine. Many of these invoices purport to come from genuine suppliers used by the business.
Another add-on to this scam is to receive an email advising that the supplier has changed bank details. These emails have all the correct information, except for the changed account details. This particular scam is becoming more prevalent.
For those who may question the invoice or email it is important not to use the contact details in the suspect invoice. Look up and verify contact details elsewhere.
If you have been in a data breach let your bank know immediately..

At the annual ambulance ball held in the North Pine (Petrie) School of Arts Hall in July 1903, Mr R. Nye Stevens (QATB General Secretary and Metropolitan Superintendent) gave a lecture on ambulance methods. Subsequently public lectures in first aid commenced and one of the students was Mr J.K. Skerman of Strathpine. The provision of some form of ambulance service in the Maleny district, where so much scrub felling was taking place, became a necessity.
Mr Skerman approached Mr Stevens in 1904 about the provision of an Ashford litter to be placed at the disposal of residents of the ‘Range’, and he undertook to canvass the district for funds to meet the cost of the equipment.
Accidents at Maleny were frequently of a serious character from the timber felling and sawmilling, and it was the custom for relays of men to carry a patient down the mountain on an improvised stretcher to Landsborough for conveyance by train to hospital.
On Friday 4 June 1915, an official visit was made to Maleny by the General Secretary of the QATB for the purpose of inquiring into and reporting on the advisability of establishing an Honorary Centre at Maleny.
The principal mover in the formulation of an honorary Centre was Mr A.E. Godwin of Maleny Hotel. By means of a benefit he had raised the sum of £21 for the ambulance before making application for the establishment of an Honorary Centre. A public
meeting of Maleny residents had been arranged for the evening of the General Secretary’s arrival.
He was asked to address the meeting on ambulance matters and first aid, and to explain the procedure necessary for the formation of an Honorary Centre.
Sufficient funds were collected to purchase a litter with stretcher and three additional stretchers that were placed with Mr J. Grigor (Wootha), Mr W. Simpson (North Maleny) and Mr L. Tesch (Teutoberg-Witta).It should be noted that it was not until 1922 that a timber building on Howard Street, Nambour commenced as the first QATB service in Nambour.
At the conclusion of the public meeting a resolution was passed asking the Brisbane Centre to establish an Honorary Centre.
Prior to the establishment of the Maleny Show sports days were arranged in Maleny to raise funds to go to the Maleny Ambulance funds.

In anticipation of the request being complied with, the following people were appointed to an Advisory Committee:
✦ Dr Sampson (Chairperson), ✦ E. Godwin (Honorary Secretary), ✦ S. Harding, J.K. Skerman, R. Gibson and J. Candy. Dr Sampson offered to render all possible help and advice to the Brigade (if formed) and also to conduct first aid classes. The Brisbane Committee subsequently approved the formation of an Honorary Centre with Honorary Bearer E. Curry (formerly attached to the Brisbane Centre) in charge.
At its July 1916 meeting the Brisbane Committee decided that, in reference to the enquiry for one of the Parent Centre’s sulkies, the Advisory Committee at Maleny be advised that a sulky and harness was available for the sum of £20 including the rail freight from Brisbane.
In July 1918, the Honorary Bearer in charge requested that a motor ambulance be supplied. The Brisbane Committee decided that as Maleny was an Honorary Centre with no paid official in charge the matter should be deferred.
With the proposal for acquiring an ambulance car a committee was formed in Maleny, and public subscriptions provided the
necessary funds for the purchase of a Ford vehicle. The committee consisted of A. McLean, J. Grigor, W. Nethercote and E. Tesch.
The first motor ambulance was purchased in 1919 following much support from then Honorary Secretary E. Godwin, who also owned the Maleny Hotel at the time. Land was donated by Mr. E.T. Dixon for the purpose of having a garage to be built to house the new vehicle..
Also in 1918 the Brisbane Committee sought a recommendation from the Chairperson of the Maleny Honorary Centre Committee for the payment of an honorarium of £5 for the honorary Officer-inCharge.
An allotment of land was donated by Mr E.T. Dixon and a garage for the car erected upon it.
On 10 June 1915, the Brisbane Committee opened an Honorary Centre at Landsborough and in 1923 formed the Honorary Centre into a Sub-Centre with Mr J.T. Woods as Officer-in-Charge. Mr Woods had previously been in charge of the St Lawrence SubCentre Centre building.
It was the wish of the founders of the Landsborough service that the Centre should become selfgoverning when financially capable of doing so. Subsequently application was made to the Home Secretary to have Landsborough Sub-Centre
raised to the status of a Branch Centre. This was accordingly granted to take effect as from 1 January 1927, but it was stipulated that Maleny Honorary Centre should be transferred from the Brisbane Centre to the Landsborough Branch Centre.
Mr W.T. Walker, the Officer-inCharge, was promoted to the rank of Superintendent. In 1932 the Landsborough Centre ceased operations and the ambulance vehicle was handed over to the Executive Committee.
At the meeting of the State Executive Committee on 10 November 1932 it was suggested that the Honorary Centre at Maleny become a self-governing Centre, and at the same time take over the Landsborough District which was unable to support a paid Superintendent.
Records show that in 1933 the Maleny Honorary Centre was staffed by seven honorary officers with Mr H. Jones in charge. In 1935 the officer in charge was Mr R.F. Bennett.
On 1 November 1937 Mr C. Liekefett was appointed ‘organiser and car attendant’ at a salary of £78 per annum. He was appointed a permanent bearer from 1 July 1940 and was promoted to the rank of Superintendent in July 1942 when Maleny became a self-governing Centre.

The original ambulance building at 50 Maple Street. Maleny served as the ambulance centre between 1947 and 1994. The building was built by Mr. Edwin Pattemore.
In 1948 Superintendent Chas Liekefett accepted a position at the Brisbane Centre and was succeeded by Ambulance Officer A.W. Myers of Nambour.
Since the retirement of Mr Alec Myers in 1966 the following officers have served in the position of Superintendent of the Maleny Centre:
✦ 1966 – 1972 T.J. Knight
✦ 1972 – 1973 M.C. McDonald
✦ 1973 – 1975 J.B. Bryant
✦ 1975 - 1995. Superintendent John McLennan
Mr A. McLean resigned from the position of Chairperson of the Maleny Ambulance committee on 14 October 1936, after 20 years’ service. He was succeeded by Mr J.A. Grigor, who had been a member of the committee from 1926.
Following the death of Mr Grigor in 1958, Mr A. Evans was appointed Chairperson and remained in that position until his death in 1961.
By the 1990’s Maleny Ambulance Service had outgrown the old station building at 50 Maple Street, Maleny and a new station was built in Bean Street on the site of the old Maleny Soldiers Hospital which had just been replaced by a new building directly across the road in Bean Street.
On 1 July 1991, the QATB was transformed into a state-administered service to become the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) as we know it today.
The new Maleny ambulance centre and staff residence were completed by July 1994 on the site of the original Maleny Hospital and the Ambulance station was officially opened in August that year.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
Queensland Estimates Committee hearing reveals a Staggering $3 Billion waste
The estimates process aids the Parliament in its scrutiny of the Government’s expenditure. Those estimates showed that in 2022 there was over $3 billion dollars expended of taxpayers money that did not provide any benefits to the people of Queensland. If that happened in every state of territory then this would have to pose the question “Do you think that Australia is over governed?”
Now that the question of Australia becoming a Republic is back on the table, is it also time to question whether one layer of government should also be dropped.
A reduction in the number of levels of government from three to two with more distinct boundaries of responsibility could be a more efficient manner of government.
The present situation allows a very damaging situation whereby the various levels of government “passing the buck” in respect to the non-provision of certain services or poor delivery of those services not only denies Australians of a more efficient system in whatever field one chooses, but is also more expensive.
Not only could it save a lot of taxpayers money, but more importantly it would more pointedly set responsibilities for specific matters. This would allow either a lower rate of taxation or the provision of increased service levels of essential services.
With two distinct levels of government it would allow a more standard set of rules. With community members now being more mobile and shifting around Australia for work and lifestyle changes there needs to be some sense of continuity of lifestyles. For example, similar education and health standards where ever a person resided, one set of traffic rules or other laws throughout Australia instead of being based on state boundaries.
There is good reason to believe that stronger regional governance within the federal system will deliver longterm social, economic and environmental benefits and more transparency in governmental decisions.
It is often suggested that Australia is in danger of becoming the world's most over-regulated country on a par with the United States and Canada. Maybe it is a question that should be seriously considered.
Truthful Jones says
And
true. - No Bulls##t” that he was flying from Brisbane to Perth to visit his son and daughter-in-law. Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to Adelaide along the way because of bad weather. The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft and stretch their legs. The plane would reboard in about 50 minutes.
Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind. One man did noticed her as he walked by and could tell the lady was blind because her Seeing Eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her throughout the entire flight. He could also tell she had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached her, and calling her by name, said, “Kathy, we are in Adelaide for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?”
The blind lady replied, “No thanks, but maybe my dog would like to stretch his legs.” All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a Seeing Eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sun-glasses.
People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, but they were trying to change airlines!
Truthful Jones says, “The moral to the story is never assume anything as not everything may be as it first appears.”

Maleny SES Group assisted Maleny Police at Gardner’s Falls, Maleny when an international student, 24 years went missing whilst swimming at the popular local swimming hole on Obi Creek at about 3.30p.m. on Monday November 28th.
A rescue helicopter was tasked to assist with the search, however the deceased was located before the arrival of the aircraft.
The student, believed to be from the southern Indian state of KeralaIndia. Mr. Abin Philip, 24 years, had been using a rope swing when diving into the water hole failed to surface following one of his jumps.
Mr Philip’s family wished that Mr. Philips funeral would be held in India. A fundraising campaign with fundraising site Gofundme was started. This has so far recorded about 1500 donations totalling more than $101,000 to be used for funeral expenses and repatriation costs.
It is believed that Mr. Philip drowned. Maleny police are now preparing a report for the coroner.

Rain throughout the winter season and some recent hot weather has prompted grasses and weeds to get a bit of a growth spurt on. This means that any bushland has ample undergrowth to burn this summer and autumn seasons.
The time is now to prepare your country property to reduce the seriousness of any bushfire that might get started. Some fires could be started by lightning strikes as the storm season is here.
If people are careful with fire, the loss and damage can be greatly reduced.
With holiday season almost upon us, many people will be preparing to go camping. If you are camping in a National Park check the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service website at: https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/camping/fires
May you have a very safe and happy holiday period.
Active fire incidents include all current and active tasks that QFES & RFB has or is responding to.

Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!
What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?
We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.
Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

Buying & Selling Residential Property in Queensland
Are you buying Real estate
With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny
Part 7
Contract signed
Once a buyer has signed a contract to purchase your property and paid a deposit, your real estate agent will provide the contract to you, either by hand, post or electronically.
Before you sign, speak with your solicitor about the contract to be sure it complies with all the formalities.
Leading up to the date of settlement, your solicitor will:
✓ check that all of the documents you are required to sign are correct and in order;
✓ make sure all outstanding government charges such as water charges and rates have been paid;
✓ calculate adjustments to the purchase price, as provided for under the contract;
• arrange for the payout and legal discharge of any mortgage on your property; and
• make sure you are paid in full for the property.
Part 8
Buying a townhouse or unit
Townhouses or units are usually part of a community title scheme. When you become an owner, you take on a relationship with other owners in the scheme and the body corporate including:
✓ sharing the ownership of common areas (e.g. lifts, stairwells and front entrances);
✓ you’re all subject to the bylaws of the body corporate; and
✓ you’re a member of a body corporate — you are jointly and severally liable for your portion of the
bodies’ corporate debts.
The body corporate is made up of all of the owners and it makes decisions about common property, issues that concern all owners and maintenance of the complex.
Owners regularly contribute money to the body corporate for day-to-day ongoing expenses and anticipated long term costs.
You should ask your solicitor to explain the ramifications of buying property in a community title scheme

With the 2022 year shortly coming to an end, we are regularly asked for our predictions for 2023 as regards home loans and the property market.
Whilst it is always very difficult to predict the future with any degree of accuracy, here are some views that we have picked from discussions with a wide range of experts:
1. Interest rate rises will continue into the first few months of 2023, with rates peaking around the middle of the year as inflation moderates
2. House prices may continue to soften slightly, whilst still remaining well above pre-COVID levels, on account of reduced borrowing capacities for purchasers
3. The property market will still be characterised by plenty of buyer interest in the Sunshine Coast region
So what that means in terms of your home loan is:
1. Continue to make sure that you are on the sharpest interest rate possible to protect yourself in a rising interest rate environment
2. Keep looking out for special offers from lenders, including $4,000 refinance cash back deals and special fixed rates
3. Consider fixed interest rate offers to give certainty of interest rate and repayments for the next 1-3 years
4. If looking to purchase a property in 2023, get a pre-approval in place so that you are fully prepared to negotiate in a softening property market
We would be pleased to discuss the outlook for 2023 with you in further detail as relevant to your own personal circumstances, and are always available 7 days a week.

Maleny Launches 8th Red Bench St Georges Anglican Church hosts Maleny’s Eighth Red Bench
On Sunday November, 2022 saw the Anglican Church in Maleny launch the eighth in the areas “Red Bench”. In the Maleny area the benches have been facilitated by the “Speak Up Now, StopDomestic and Family Violence Committee. This committee, formed in 2019 is a joint project of the Service Clubs in Maleny, including the Maleny Rotary Club, The ZONTA club of Blackall Range, QUOTA International of Maleny and the Maleny Community Centre.
Red Benches are designed to start conversations. Reverend Deborah Bird of St George’s Anglican Church spoke at the ceremony about the scourge of domestic violence.
Statistics show that 1 woman a week and 1 male a month is killed by their partner.
It is believed that men see domestic violence as a women’s problem, but whilst it is predominately women and children that are the victims, it is predominately men who hold the key to this problem.

Jackaroo “Getting to the Top”
Disappointment in Ellenbrook, W.A.!
It’s disappointing to wake up to find that overnight some local kids have taken it upon themselves to vandalise slim whilst I was sleeping. They ripped off several caps, bent the army bugle trying to tear it off the tractor, tried to bend the mirrors and various other little things including bending metalworks. Needless to say I will be awake and waiting for them if they decide to come back tonight….
Not happy Jan
This happened in Ellenbrook WA. On that night Bitsa was camped with a friend at the circus who’d looked after her whilst I was away. I’m off in a corner by myself and figured Bitsa would appreciate being closer to the rest of the show for a few days as she gets more people patting her and befriending her than she would tied up at my camp.
Here is an important bit of information for you. Is it only December???!!!! Where the hell did they come from, I can guarantee there’s already hot cross buns at Woolies and Christmas has not yet been here!
I’ve got a few ideas on crazy vehicles for future trips that I am thinking about doing.
Queensland Young Australian of the year!
I’d like to say a massive congratulations to the QLD Young Australian of the year Miss Talei Elu. It was an absolute honour to be nominated as a finalist alongside her.
Jeremy, Madelyn and Gali, all were amazing finalists and I wish them all the best in their endeavours to help make this country the great nation that it is.
It was a bit tricky getting here though. When I arrived at the Brisbane Airport my sister was there to pick me up. She must have been excited to see me as she forgot where she parked her car. We walked a million miles trying to find it. I can’t complain though because she did actually pick me up. I couldn’t have walked.
If only I had Slim, you couldn’t lose it in the crowd.
