Another evolution for Maleny Players with NIDA trained tutor

Maleny Players have always been welcoming youth to their group, not only to train as actors, but to actually perform in front of an audience.

In another evolution for Maleny Players they welcome as Youth Director/ Tutor, Darren Hayden. Darren first trained at Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art which is Australia’s Centre of excellence in education for theatre, film and television. He also trained at Rose Bruford College of speech and drama in the United Kingdom, where he graduated with a BA (Hons) in acting.

Fortunately, Darren was available for the Maleny Aussie Day Expo and was at the Maleny Players where he was joined by Kath and Kim of Fountain Lakes, Melbourne to help introduce the younger generation to acting.

The first acting classes commenced on January 31st at 4.15p.m. at the home of Maleny Players in the Maleny Showgrounds.

It is not too late to join in this young group where acting is taught to be fun and accessible to everyone. To find out more simply email: malenyplayers@gmail.com

Federal Government to cut Mental Health Medicare Sessions

Last year, Labor showed us just how out of touch they are when it comes to Australians’ mental health. They have cut the number of Medicare-funded psychology sessions that are available through the Better Access program from 20 to 10 per year.

Medical and mental health experts have warned that the traumas of the pandemic and other pressures continue to impact lives. and it's important that Australians continue to have access to 20 Medicare-funded sessions per year so that everyone can get the support they need.

Join me in calling on the Government to reverse their cuts to #MentalHealth funding by signing the petition at:

Jim was a fierce advocate for Australia’s defence force and the veteran community, a profound voice of reason on our national security and strategy, a quality representative for the people of New South Wales, and a good friend. His service took him to Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, East Timor, and Iraq, and into the halls of Australia’s Senate.

Through it all, his unwavering love of country and unflappable courage have set an example for so many.

On behalf of a grateful nation and the people of Fisher, I offer my condolences to the Molan family.

What is happening to Brisbane’s Cross River Tunnel

I've been doing a ‘happy dance’ - literally and figuratively - after receiving confirmation that Maleny-Kenilworth Road north of Conondale is slated for upgrades in the immediate future. After nearly fourteen years of advocating for the full length of the road to be made one sealed lane each way, it’s now been announced that the final two key sections of the road will be upgraded and the works will start before the end of March.

This is huge news for the community. I’m so sorry it took this long, but I am very excited to be announcing that it’s finally happening.

Together we’ve pushed hard enough to force the Government’s hand and upgrade this road. But it should never have been a political issue, it’s a safety issue.

The upgrade will be on a 2.8km stretch of Maleny-Kenilworth Road from Lees Road through to Walkers Farm at Cambroon and a 1.1km section either side of Booloumba Creek Road.

This is something we have passionately been fighting for for so long. While fourteen years feels like a long time for me, locals have been pleading to get the road upgraded for far longer than that. I can’t wait to celebrate with the community once the work gets going.

The exterior painting of your home is more of a long term commitment than indoor paint, and we all know the importance of our homes making an excellent first impression from the street.

One of the questions asked most often is “How do I choose a colour for my home?” Paint colours basically is a matter of personal likes and dislikes.

A few simple rules can help make a simple matter of getting a goodcolour choice.

* Take your time

* Consider the design, age, and size. If your home is older honour the past and use heritage paint colours or spice it up and dramatise architectural detail –sometimes it’s wise to invest in a colour designer.

Consider the surface of your exterior. Some colours look great on a plaster finish but not so good on weatherboards. Read magazines, make a scrap book, choose what makes you feel great every time you arrive home.

Go for a Sunday walk in your neighbourhood,

take a camera and take a photo of what you like.

Borrow from nature –think about the year round colours in your garden.

Check your roof – if you love the colour & it doesn’t need a paint make sure you consider it. Also look and allow for things like brick work that won’t be painted.

Pick out the best features – this may be your front door, gables or posts you may end up with 3 – 5 colours. Try to remain in colour families.

Use light to paint colours to add size, go dark for drama (front door, sills) but consider symmetry. Colours in your interior will guide you to an exterior colour. One of your goals is to create flow and harmonise.

Consider paint finishes – matt, semi gloss and gloss –the sheen level can

change the look of the home. Consider the colour throughout the day – colours and sheen levels can appear different in differing lights.

If your style is traditional, go for warm neutrals alongside a deep green, black, or navy door and shutters or you could opt for cool neutrals paired with charcoal or purple-based black doors and shutters.

Exterior paint colours often appear several shades lighter when applied to the entire houses.

The biggest tip is to use the best quality paint available. Don’t scrimp, after all the paint is actually the cheapest part of the job.

Don’t forget that school is now back so keep an extra lookout

Schools are well back and there are not only a number of new students who may yet to get used to traffic, but others who are just not taking note of traffic around them.

Take care when driving, especially in areas around our schools.

With eScooters and eBikes becoming more popular riders are mostly of the younger age group. They do not take as much notice of what surrounds them as they should and as a result they create more dangerous driving conditions on our roads.

Take care when driving.

Why you should have an Air Dehumidifier

If you want your home to remain as comfortable as possible during the summer months, you should consider using a dehumidifier to reduce the amount of excessive moisture in the air.

With the present indications are that the atmosphere will remain humid throughout the next 4 to 6 months mould and mildew will continue to grow.

Using a dehumidifier during the summer also improves the air quality inside your home and can eliminate potential allergens like mould and mildew. A dehumidifier also reduces the chance of dust mites which thrive in high humidity areas and also eliminates odours.

One Tree Hill on Woods Family Farm

Mrs Florence Woods has been recognised in this year’s prestigious Australia Day Honours List. She received the Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to the local hinterland community.

Among the many community organisations helped by Mrs Woods, a mother of 8 is the Maleny Show Society where she actively volunteered from 1978-2017 within the Dairy Cattle Section and Food preparation and sales. She became a Life Member in 2020.

She is also a life member of the Maleny Senior Citizen Club and a Patron to both the Maleny Historical Society and the Ben Bryce Park Retirement Village Auxiliary.

Her son, Francis, with whom she is presently living, said that whilst it was great to be recognised for her work over the years, she certainly didn’t volunteer to look for recognition.

Maleny’s “One Tree Hill”, famous as a wedding photo location is owned by Mrs Woods and for decades she has collected donations from photographers to use the site. All donations received have been donated to various Maleny community organisations.

Permits to light fires

In Queensland, the Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990 is the principle legislation that deals with lighting fires in the open. The Act provides a systematic approach to the authorised use and control of fire in the open and for fire prevention.

The Act makes it illegal to light a fire without a 'Permit to Light Fire' issued by a Fire Warden, or other notification issued by the Commissioner Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.

These permits relate to any fire greater than 2 metres in any dimension

Obtaining a permit requires an "Application for a permit to light fire" form to be filled out. They are free, and so is the permit.

Permits are usually issued for a period of one month

You can contact the new Fire Warden for Maleny & District on 0474 855 076

The Queensland Air Museum was offered a permanent home on the Sunshine Coast by the then Landsborough Shire Council. On the 14th June 1986 the Air Museum’s collection was relocated to a site at Caloundra Airport which had a newly built hangar. The official opening of the museum took place on the 4th April 1987 by Mrs Ly Bennett, wife of the museum's first patron, the late Air Vice-Marshal Don Bennett who was the Queensland-born founder of the World War II Bomber Command Pathfinder Force.

Australian Military Aviation traces its history back to the 1911 Imperial Conference that was held in London, where it was decided aviation should be developed within the armed forces of the British Empire. Australia implemented this decision, the first dominion to do so, by approving the establishment of the "Australian Aviation Corps". This initially consisted of the Central Flying School at Point Cook, Victoria, opening on 22 October 1912. By 1914 the corps was known as the "Australian Flying Corps”

From its inception in 1973, the museum has had a 100% volunteer workforce who bring an extraordinary range of skills to the organisation

The museum follows the development of military aviation from 1912 and the engagement of the Australian Flying Corps in the First World War contributed greatly to pilot training and investment in aircraft and hangers. Since the first air trial between England and Australia in 1919, international aviation has also played an important part in Australian aviation history.

The Queensland Air Museum plays an important part in documenting Australia's aviation history with over 50 of Australia’s most iconic aircraft on display, including many historic military aircraft.

The January Open Day highlighted helicopters in the Australian Aviation history.

The Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service, Caloundra played a part in the QAM Helicopters Open Day and gave a special demonstration of a winch rescue. This service is one of the oldest community-based helicopter rescue services in the world.

The Queensland services operates out of the Carrara base is a free community service.

Former Careflight chopper pilot Ian Smart flew his personal fully restored CAC Kiowa (A17-029) above the museum to give those

Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

attending a great view of the machine in action. He did a 360 degree turn whilst in the hover mode so that those with cameras would get some great pictures.

The CAC Kiowa (A17-029) was used by the Australian Defence Forces as a Light Observation Helicopter, and the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) was to produce them in Australia under license at their works at Fishermen's Bend Melbourne.

Also in the display is a Westland Wessex which is a British-built turbine-powered development of the American Sikorsky H-34. These machines were used mainly by the Royal Australian Navy between 1961 and finally retired in 1989 for antisubmarine patrols. They were used heavily after Darwin’s Cyclone Tracey destroyed Darwin to carry stores ashore from HMAS Melbourne.

Another popular warbird in the collection is the Bell UH-1 Iroquois, nicknamed “Huey”). This is a utility military helicopter designed and produced by the American aerospace company Bell Helicopter. Iroquois helicopters of No. 9 Squadron RAAF were deployed to South Vietnam in mid 1966 in support of the 1st Australian Task Force.

One of these machines is included in the display. It is popular with the younger generation sitting in the pilot’s seat and dreaming of another adventure. One of the favourite displays is always the “engine run” display where actual engines are started up and run. This display includes an engine run of CA-16 Wirraway Mk 111 A20-652. This aircraft was built by Australia’s Commonwealth Corporation in July 1944. The aircraft is maintained to preserve it in an operational condition.

The sound and smell brings back memories of days long gone. The museum's Operational Engine and Aircraft Collection consists of engines ranging from 40 hp up to 1,500 hp and dating from 1930. The awesome sight and sound of a 1500 horsepower 14 cylinder radial engine powering up is an unforgettable experience.

A display of passenger aircraft types represent Australian and Papua New Guinean airlines, such as Ansett Airlines, Trans Australia Airlines, Bush Pilots Airways, Queensland Airlines, Queensland Pacific Airways, Airlines of NSW, Airlines of Tasmania, Ansett-MAL and Mandated Airlines.

Royal Flying Doctor

The Reverend John Flynn witnessed the daily struggle of pioneers living in remote areas. Following a serious accident on the 29th July 1917 that resulted in the death of stockman Jimmy Darcy Flynn was moved to provide a 'mantle of safety' for the people of the bush and so his vision of an outback aeromedical service was born.

In the mid 1920’s Alfred Traeger invented the pedal powered radio, revolutionising communication in the outback. These two events led to the establishment of the Royal Flying Doctor Service as we know it today. For those who lived in the outback of Queensland in the 1950’s this aeroplane was always a welcome sight.

To preserve some of the history of this service the Museum has on display a De Havilland Drover aircraft. The Drover aircraft was designed and built in the late 1940's by De Havilland at Bankstown, NSW. Only 20 of this type were built with the first having its maiden flight in 1948. Whilst Qantas and TAA used these aircraft as passenger and cargo aircraft.

with airliner customers in Australia with the first order for six aircraft was placed by the Commonwealth on

behalf of Trans-Australia Airlines in 1956.

The first Fokker F27 that arrived in Australia crashed on approach to the Mackay airport in Queensland on the 27th June 1960 killing all 29 people on board.

The Fokker F27 Friendships continued to be the most widely used airliner for country services around Australia until the 1980’s.

Their most renowned role was with the Royal Flying Doctor Service used these machines serving as an air ambulance well into the 1960's. The Drover aircraft on display is VH-FDR named "John Flynn”.

This aircraft was operated by T.A.A. out of Cloncurry in the 1950's on behalf of the Royal Flying Doctor Service carrying out both routine and life saving operations in Central Australia. This aircraft was named after Dr John Flynn who was the founder of the Inland Flying Doctor.

Another display features the Fokker F27 line of aircraft. The Friendship quickly became popular

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

Sydney’s New Year's Eve annual fireworks event went ahead and was very successful and so it should have been with a budget of 10 million dollars.

This event consists of two fireworks shows, with an evening display known as the "Family Fireworks" held at 9:00 p.m., and the main "Midnight Fireworks" held at 12:00 a.m. The Melbourne fireworks event was the biggest that that city has ever presented. These were just a few of thousands of similar events throughout Australia and hundreds of thousands throughout the world. All costing local taxpayers who knows what and at a time when government services are strangled for money.

For all sorts of reasons we are told that climate change is caused by the release of toxic gases that includes carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen— Different metal compounds in fireworks cause chemical reactions that give fireworks their different colouring. These three main greenhouse gases created are unfortunately the main gasses released when fireworks are ignited. This can also lead to a worsening of respiratory illnesses, including asthma. Gases emitted from fireworks can also trigger cardiovascular diseases and reduce lung function. These pyrotechnic displays also produce high concentrations of smoke and particulates that can not only harm our air quality, but pose a risk to individuals who are sensitive to particulate pollution. Heavy metals created in fireworks ignitions in the atmosphere can travel and land over large distances.

All of that is said to highlight possible consequences of firework displays. I, for one am not particularly against firework displays. Now, nearly every day we hear from all sorts of “experts and authorities” about the many daily functions that we undertake as a community that we must stop doing because of the environment. Things so diverse as driving motor vehicles to eating meat as animals create methane gas or burning coal or gas to create electricity.

I do not ever remember hearing from any of those “experts or authorities” about having to ban community fireworks displaysnot once - not ever that I can remember. Yet apart from a few moments of enjoyment do we achieve any benefit from fireworks displays, but there are many benefits created by many of the other environmental damaging events.

If you think that this piece is about the good or evil of fireworks displays, then it is not. It is about the level of hypocrisy that abound in our communities on a daily basis by the self-righteous who have their own beliefs that they need to force onto everyone else.

In case you are wondering, I too believe in protecting our environment. It is all we have got!

Being a part of a community can make us feel as though we are a part of something greater than ourselves.

Selling or buying a property!

Don’t be alarmed!

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

The new year has brought with it numerous changes in the law around real estate sales in Queensland, not the least of which involve utterly essential smoke alarms.

For example, the new laws state that smoke alarms must: be installed in each bedroom; on each storey of a house and in hallways which connect bedrooms to the rest of the house; be photoelectric and comply with AS 3786-2014; be powered by either 240 volt or a 10-year lithium battery; and be interconnected with every other smoke alarm in the house so they all activate together. Smoke alarms must meet these requirements prior to the contract being signed and if the

seller doesn’t comply, the buyer is entitled to an adjustment (read penalty) at settlement equal to 0.15% of the purchase price

If the seller has not complied after settlement, the buyer must install compliant smoke alarms. With so many new laws to adhere to, it is recommended that sellers use a professional smoke alarm provider to upgrade the smoke alarms in their properties.

We strongly recommended sellers book their properties in for a smoke alarm upgrade when listing their properties for sale as they are competing for available smoke alarm providers, with hundreds of rental properties that also need to comply with the new 2022 laws.

From 1 January 2022 all rental properties must comply with the new law at commencement of a new lease or a lease renewal

Research suggests only 50% of Queensland rentals are currently compliant, creating a wait time of four to six weeks for a smoke alarm upgrade according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ).

One Tree Hill on Wood’s Family Farm

For a number of years “One Tree Hill” on the Woods Family Farm on Mountain View Road has been the backdrop for countless wedding pictures. With the Glasshouse Mountains in the background brides and grooms wanted their epic photos of their wedding day taken at this iconic Sunshine Coast spots to add to their precious memories.

For more than 20 years this spot has been the backdrop for hundreds of brides who were happy to pay the fee of $50 for the experience. The full total of those fees, totalling over $60,000 was donated to various local Maleny Community Groups as part of their fundraising efforts.

Following a small number of complaints to the Sunshine Coast Council about the use of this piece of land the

council has advised the owner, Florence Woods that the use of this property as a Function facility is unlawful and a development permit must be sought before she can further lawfully operate on this property. The land is presently deemed rural.

A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson confirmed Council said a number of complaints have been received in both 2021 and 2022 about the use of the property. The site can still be used should the owners obtain a development permit to lawfully operate on this property.

As a result this site has been closed for photos as from January 7th, 2023. This results in a “drying up” of donations to the various community groups previously being recipients of money.

Following the closure there has been a flood of responses praising the generosity of the Woods family for allowing photography there with the proceeds going to charities.

Some local neighbours who wished to remain anonymous said that the “lack of respect” shown by some visitors towards the use of the property was what brought about the present situation.

Thanks to the Woods Family for the dreams created for a lot of people over a long period of time.

Sunshine Coast Council offers Community grants

One of the most difficult tasks for community not for profit groups is fundraising for their projects and facilities.

Community groups wanting to undertake projects and programs or needing upgrades to their facilities are invited to apply for a Major Grant.

The Sunshine Coast Council program, which offers grants of up to $30,000, supports community organisations to deliver one-off projects, events and activities that demonstrate a community purpose and align with strategic priorities.

Major Grant applications can be submitted in one of six categories:

❖ community development

❖ community facilities

❖ creative development

❖ cultural heritage

❖ economic development

❖ sports and recreation.

The current round of community grant funding is now available and the round closes on March 13th.

The council offers plenty of assistance to groups to get their applications right and give themselves more chance of getting some of the present $500.000 grant money now available.

Eligible not-for-profit organisations can apply now for up to $15,000 towards one-off projects, events and activities that meet community need and provide community benefit.

Those who are successful in getting a grant should be notified by mid. May 2023.

To find out more about available grants or to register to enrol in a grant writing workshop should visit the web site below:

Australian-made

On-grid and off-grid energy storage systems

RedEarth Energy Storage is a proud sponsor of The Block 2022

RedEarth Energy Storage is proud to announce that its Troppo-4841 battery module is the first Australian-made battery approved by Australia’s Clean Energy Council (CEC), making it the most advanced, high energy density, compliant Australian battery on the CEC list.

The versatile 4.1kWh Troppo battery module can be used on grid or off grid, to substitute old lead acid battery banks, as part of a RedEarth integrated ‘Personal Power Plant’ or with other reputable inverter systems. The Troppo will be made available as part of its integrated systems, or supplied to the industry as a standalone product.

The Troppo-4841 includes a display that shows the state of charge as well as voltage and current, making it the easiest battery for installers to install, and easy for customers to see at a glance how much electricity they have in their batteries.

The most popular solar batteries are now lithium-ion based batteries. You should expect your lithium home batteries to last between 10 and 15 years under normal conditions. Running a battery flat or over-charging it can also cause damage to a battery, leading to a reduced lifetime. RedEarth uses intelligent batteries, with software to protect the battery cells from these situation. RedEarth systems are designed so that individual batteries can be replaced as required without changing the whole system.

Your solar battery will perform at its best when installed in a cool, dry place. Installing a solar storage system can increase the value of your home, whether you choose to stay and reap the rewards yourself, or sell, and make the most from your additional equity. So, whether you are a homeowner or landlord, consider solar an investment, not an expense, and choose a system that can adapt to changing energy needs. When you combine smart energy consumption with the long-term efficiency of a solar battery, you’re on the right path to saving money. But like any big investment, it’s important to know how to get the best out of your system so you can maximise the benefits available to you.

Maleny Hardware and Rural Supplies is located in the centre of Maleny in the picturesque Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Thy offer good old fashioned service to your car for those heavy items. There is also ample parking at the front and pick up at the rear of the store.

We are independently owned and supply the local community with rural and hardware supplies at competitive prices.

Did you know we can deliver items in surrounding suburbs for a small fee. Come and browse through our extensive range of products and say hi to the new owners Andrea & Mark Porter.

Mi-Feed is a boutique stock feed mill on the Sunshine Coast at Yandina. In operation since 1979 we were the first to incorporate the micronisation process into the manufacture of stock feed. There is a Mi Feed product for your animals - be it chooks, beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, pigs or goats and don't want to handle a different feed for all of them. Mi-Feed has developed a number of lines that have a multi species purpose. Singular micronised grains such as barley or our ever popular Hobby Farm Mix.

Because the micronisation process

gelatinises the starch before it is consumed, the harmful affects of high grain feeding, such as founder, acidosis and overheating are dramatically reduced thus providing a “cool” source of energy to the animal.

Where to Now!!

I will be taking some time away from the circus for the next few weeks as Slim has some repairs done and I’ll be going more rural. I’m Planning on heading across the Nullarbor in the next few months

I’m contemplating extending the trip. Heading from Port Augusta up to Alice Springs, then on to Darwin, Mt Isa, Birdsville for the Big Red Bash. After that I would then come back down to Adelaide to meet up again with the The Great Moscow Circus for the end of the year down south.

“On the Road for 2 years!”

I left home almost 2 years ago as a fresh faced and nervous 18 year old, but today marks the end of my teenage era, being 20 now seems old.

When I look back over the past two years on my travels to date it has all been worthwhile, and there will be much more to come.

Thank you everyone for the Birthday wishes.
