I would suggest that every home in Australia had a set of canisters similar to those in the photo to right. Mostly they were made of bakelite. In the 1940’s and 1950’s there were ten companies producing Bakelite or more correctly thermoset domestic ware.
Maleny Wood Expo is here!!
Three days of gaining knowledge about wood and how to use it sustainably will be held at the Maleny Showgrounds on June 4th - 5th + 6th. This event has become “must attend” event for woodies as it has gained a reputation Australia wide as the Expo of “All things Wood” and has become an annual pilgrimage for woodworking enthusiasts and families alike. The Expo diverse program offers a chance for everyone to learn more about the journey of timber from seed to furniture and everything in between.
Demonstrations of into products will be seen. There is also a market from where you can purchase sustainably sourced timber for your own will be on display. .
Part of the Expo excitement surrounds
total prize pool of $20,000 which attracts talented wood artisans from all around Australia. Woodworkers of all levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals, are encouraged to entries.
A sample of the work entered can be seen in the 2023 winning entry completed by Derek Calderwood who only took up woodworking as a hobby in 2018. It is not too late to take up woodworking as a hobby.
Whilst the weather looks like being a bit on the wet side many of the displays are inside or undercover - whatever the weather there is still a lot to keep you interested..

ANZAC Day Commemoration
And another huge turn out at the Woodford ANZAC Day service and parade. My sincerest thanks to the RSL of Maleny and each and every Queenslander who came out to commemorate and honour our veterans and serving defence force personnel.
It was a fitting service at the Witta Cemetery where after the service we toasted those ANZACS who have over the generations fought for the freedoms of Aussies. What better way to remember that with a XXXX with friends..

New meaning to horsepower - 1925
This photo was taken in 1925 in Bunya Street, Maleny during typical wet Maleny season. The first house on left was situated where the petrol station is n ow located. This actual house was part of the house that was demolished to make way for the petrol station.
It gives a new meaning to horsepower to propel a motor vehicle. This type of assistance to keep vehicles moving during the wet season was apparently very commonly seen according to an older Maleny resident. Just how things have changed in just 100 years!
Whilst sitting on the deck at Maple 3 it struck me just how much Maleny has changed since 1980. It has gone from family orientated country town to a bustling tourist spot. All of this in just one lifetime. Even Maple 3 was just the figment of someone’s imagination and still many years in the future.
Have all of the changes been for the better? Only you can really answer that looking back on your memories of life.
Australia has undergone signi fi cant transformations in its societal fabric between 1950 and 2020, marked by shifts in demographics, culture, economy, and politics. These decades witnessed Australia's journey from a predominantly homogeneous society to a multicultural nation, from a colonial outpost to a modern industrialised economy, and from conservative values to a more progressive outlook.
Let's take a look back into Australia’s past over 70 years these changes in respect to aspects of Australian society.
Demographics: In the 1950s, Australia was largely populated by people of British and European descent
As a young child in the very early 1950’s, living in Brisbane one can remember going to do the shopping, which was always done in Queen Street because there were no other major shopping centres. There was however the corner store at the end of the street where basics could be
purchased in bulk and sent home in Brown paper bags.
Shopping in Queen Str set always meant going in your best Sunday clothes, women worn hats, stockings and gloves. Men always wore a suit and a vest and tie.
immigration policies and global influences. Waves of migrants from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East transformed Australia into one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world by the 21st century. This influx of people from diverse cultural backgrounds enriched Australia's society, contributing to a vibrant multicultural identity.
Even the young ones had to be dressed in their finest clothesjust in case you met Mrs Jones from down the road. At this time the Brisbane City Hall spire was the tallest building in the city. However, the latter half of the 20th century saw signi fi cant demographic changes due to
Cultural expressions in Australia also evolved considerably over this period. In the 1950s, Australian culture was heavily influenced by British traditions, and there was a sense of cultural cringe where Australians looked to Britain for validation. However, as the century progressed, there emerged a distinct Australian identity in literature, film, music, and art. Iconic works like Patrick White's novels, Peter Carey's writings, and films like "Picnic at Hanging Rock" and "Mad Max" showcased uniquely Australian narratives and landscapes.
The emergence of Indigenous art also gained recognition.
The Australian economy underwent signi transformations from the 1950s to the 2020s. In the post-World War II era, Australia's economy was heavily reliant on agriculture and manufacturing industries. However, with the advent of globalisation and technological advancements, the economy gradually shifted towards services and knowledge-based industries. The mining boom in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, fuelled by demand from China, played a pivotal role in Australia's economic growth. Additionally, economic reforms in the 1980s and 1990s, such as deregulation and trade liberalisation, transformed Australia into a more market-oriented economy. The political landscape in Australia also experienced significant changes during this period. The dominance of the conservative Liberal Party and the Australian Labor Party was challenged by the emergence of minor parties and independent candidates. Issues such as Indigenous rights, gender equality, environmental conservation, and immigration became prominent on the political agenda. Australia also underwent social reforms, including the recognition of Indigenous Australians in the constitution, the legalisation of same-sex marriage, and the implementation of policies to address climate change.
Cultural changes during this period, and it continues to this day have been brought by the major increases in migrant numbers, especially from the middle East, India and the Asian continent. The population of Brisbane in 1950 was 442,000 people whilst in 2024 the population has risen to 2.536,000. This population growth in itself has been a major factor in the changes that we have seen over the past 70 years.
Despite the progress made, Australia faced numerous challenges in the 21st century. Issues such as income inequality, housing affordability, environmental degradation, and racial discrimination persisted and demanded urgent attention. The COVID-19 pandemic also highlighted vulnerabilities in Australia's healthcare system and exposed disparities in access to resources and opportunities. These challenges also presented opportunities for positive change, fostering resilience, innovation, and community solidarity.
Social values in Australia shifted from traditionalism to progressivism over the decades. In the 1950s, conservative values regarding gender roles, sexuality, and family structure were predominant. The latter half of the 20th century saw the rise of social movements advocating for gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and multiculturalism. The women's liberation movement, the gay rights movement, and the Indigenous rights movement all contributed to challenging traditional norms and fostering a more inclusive society.
As Australia entered the third decade of the 21st century, it continued to navigate a rapidly changing global landscape. The rise of digital technology, the increasing interconnectedness of economies, and the urgency of addressing climate change posed both opportunities and challenges for Australia's future.
As a multicultural, pluralistic society, Australia's strength lies in its ability to embrace diversity, foster social cohesion, and adapt to evolving circumstances.
In conclusion, Australia's societal changes between 1950 and 2020 reflect a complex interplay of historical, cultural, economic, and political forces. From a homogeneous nation to a multicultural society, from conservative values to progressivism, Australia has evolved significantly over the decades.
As it confronts the challenges of the future, Australia's ability to uphold its democratic principles, promote social justice, and embrace diversity will be critical in shaping its identity and trajectory in the 21st century.
The only thing that will be ensured is that our country will continue to change - there is no stopping it..
Fiddes Woodworking Products
Fiddes has a long, proud history of caring for wood that began with the founder, Albert Fiddes, in the United Kingdom in the early part of last century and continues to this day.
Fiddes Australia - Hard Wax Oils
What are Hard Wax Oils?
Hard Wax Oils are a blend of natural oils and waxes which are designed to protect internal timber surfaces. The wax content keeps the oil suspended in the surface of the wood for longer. Unlike film coatings, the pores of the timber are filled, and the timber pores are ‘saturated’ which will allow no room for anything else.
Under normal circumstances 2 thin coats is all that is required. Anything more than this will result in over application and the coating will be weaker not stronger.
A timber surface that is treated with Hard Wax Oil is resistant to water and dirt because of the saturation. The wax component forms a hard layer, and this layer gets harder over the years meaning maintenance is required less frequently.
To apply the oil to floors, the preferred method is with a microfibre short nap roller and a paint tray. Do not use sponge, mohair or lambswool rollers or speed brushes as these hold too much oil and over application will occur
In contrast to other finishes such as polyurethane or lacquers, timber surfaces that are finished with Hard Wax Oil can breathe freely and the coat of wax remains elastic so it will not crack, peel, flake, or blister.
Hard Wax Oil After Care
Ongoing maintenance will depend on how the surface is treated so to extend the life of your coating it is important to care for it correctly. Good care and maintenance are the key to keeping your surfaces looking amazing and it is essential to use the correct cleaning products. It is a myth that ingredients such as eucalyptus, citrus etc are good for cleaning timber. They will in fact help with weakening the coating and reduce the durability and sheen. So please do not use any citrus, eucalyptus, ammonia or caustic based cleaners on your beautifully finished surfaces and floors.
Fiddes Cleaning products are a non-abrasive, rinse free formulation that require no rinsing and will dry smear free.
For timber flooring Fiddes Wood Floor Cleaner is the way to go. This is a concentrated product which will maintain the surface and keep your flooring looking just lovely! Dilute 2 capfuls into 4 litres of water and mop those floors.
Fiddes Hard Wax Oil is extremely easy to spot repair. Mask around the scratched boards with painters’ tape, lightly sand with a fine paper and apply a coat of Hard Wax Oil.

Have you changes your driving habits?
The latest data from Compare the Market found that 40.5% of Queenslanders are driving less due to the increased cost of fuel – which is slightly above the national average of 39.7%.
Many motorists have already or are considering changing to smaller more fuel efficient vehicles as petrol pries now around the $2.10 - $2.40 a litre.
One way to increase fuel efficiency, despite the costs you think you may be saving by skimping out on your annual service, your fuel efficiency may decrease due to your unmaintained car.
Maybe this could bring people back to shopping at local stores rather than chase “the bargain”..
Need a Roadworthy Certificate?
Maleny Service Centre have a Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises and we know only too well what it takes to make your vehicle safe and roadworthy.
All vehicles (including trucks, motorbikes and trailers) must have a Safety or Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) if being sold, registered for the first time or being re-registered in Queensland. Registered Vehicles cannot be solid without a RWC.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
The law is an ass when it comes to “human rights”
A recent High Court of Australia ruled that it was unconstitutional and illegal for the Australian government to keep illegal immigrants in custody. As a result of this landmark ruling 149 detained illegal migrants were immediately released from the Yongah Hill Detention Centre in Perth last November.
Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”
Truthful says that his sixteen year-old grandson came home with a brand new Ford F150. His father and I looked at the truck and asked, “Where did you get that truck?!”
“I bought it today,” the grand- on says.
“With what money?” Truthful asks.
Following their release from custody several of them have now been charges with the home invasion of two elderly Australian citizens in their mid 70’s where those Australian citizens were seriously assaulted. It is very lucky that a death did not occur as a result.
The photo below shows the extent of the injuries to the female after more than a week from being assaulted.
Irrespective of the results of an upcoming court case involving the offender the victim said she had been left living in fear after the attack. "I'm very frightened," she said. Life will never be the same.
The offender had already been charged with two counts of failing to comply with his monitoring conditions by breaching a 10pm-6am curfew and other driving offences before this serious assault.
It would be interesting to know who illegal immigrants are not deported from Australia back to their country immediately after their detection. There are legal means to gain entry to Australia and hundreds of thousands of people are legally gaining entrance to Australia each year. It is not a matter of blocking entry, merely ensuring that there is no security risks to Australia from those who do enter Australia.
Truthful knows what a new F150 cost.
“Well,” the grand-son says, “this one cost me just fifteen dollars.”
The boy’s father looks at him like he’s crazy.
“Who would sell a truck like that for fifteen dollars?” he says.
“It was the lady up the street,” says the boy. “I don’t know her name – they just moved in. She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy her F150 for fifteen dollars.
“Oh my Goodness!” says the father. “Maybe she’s mentally ill or has Alzheimer’s something. Truthful, you better go see what’s going on.”
So Truthful walks up the street to the house where the lady lives and finds her out in the yard calmly planting petunias.
He introduces himself as the grand-father of the boy to whom she had sold a new Ford F150 truck for fifteen dollars and asks to know why she did it.
“Well,” she says, “two days ago my husband left on a business trip. Yesterday I got a phone call from his boss and found out that he really ran off to Hawaii with his secretary and doesn’t intend to come back.”
“Oh, my goodness, I’m so sorry,” Truthful says. “But what does that have to do with my grandson and your truck?”
Will those who seriously offend be deported?
“Well, this morning he called and told me he was stranded because he got robbed of his wallet with all his credit cards and cash. He told me to sell his new F150 and send him the money. So I did.”

Today’s Thought
https://issuu.com/Maleny-Grapevine-Community-News
The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Another story from the past Step back in history with an insight into Early Maleny through the eyes of Harold Brooker (dec)
(Harrold Brooker (now deceased) was part of the Maleny pioneering Brooker family. He saw many changes take place in the Maleny district before his death in the late 1990’s. His brother, Bert passed away only recently (2002). Unfortunately, both Harrold & Bert took many memories of the development of the district with them. Chris Brooker (Bert's son and Harrold's nephew) and his family still live in Maleny.
When we look down the streets of Maleny today it is hard to imagine wagons ploughing through mud up to the shafts - in fact, says Harold Brooker, the mud was so deep that it came up to the tow boards where the carters used to carry their corn beef so that the salt didn’t rust the milk churns.
Today when we drive our four wheel drive vehicles on bitumen roads we can only imagine the difficulties that our parents had to sustain. These conditions were not generations ago, but in the living memory of some of our town’s current residents.
Harold Brooker remembers the years when it rained continuously for six months, turning the byways into nothing but mud from fence line to fence line. During these times, riding his horse from his family home at Witta to the Maleny State School, which at that
time was in Cedar Street, the present site of the Maleny kindergarten, it was impossible to go faster than a trot because of the mud.
Coming from a large family of five boys and two sisters, Harold soon learnt what it was like for a family to work together as all the family had their chores to do each day. “Life was always pretty tough, but I have no complaints.”
Times certainly have changed. Harold remembers having sixpence to spend one afternoon after school so he bought six pence worth of chocolate. He ate the lot on the way home that day. He got so much that he was sick before he got home, painting the road half the way.
About 1914 the Brooker family went first to live at Toogoolawah then to
Mudgeeraba where the family worked on a dairy farm milking 420 cows a day through race bails, by hand. “You soon got sick of cows,” said Harold.
When the railways opened up in the early 1890s, horse drawn vehicles gathered at the main station yards in Landsborough, Palmwoods and Nambour, waiting for passengers to arrive and transporting them to camping spots beside the sea or to guest houses in places like Montville, Buderim and Maleny.
Harry Lyons from Maleny, in addition to his garage and mechanical business, operated a car rental business and bus depot from the lower end of Maple Street.
In 1923, he pioneered the first motor service between Maleny and Landsborough and in October 1938 he took over the main contract and passenger service from Albert Benhrendorff.
One day we had just had enough so dad called it quits and we shifted to Pimpama. Ironically, the dairy we had just left then got milking machines.

Early Maleny through the eyes of Harold Brooker (dec)
(Continued from Page 3)
The family eventually returned to Maleny, via Beaudesert and Gympie.
Like their father before them, the younger Brooker family saw the transport industry as their destiny, Father Brooker having horse and bullock wagons carrying butter and general cargo between Maleny and Landsborough, Brothers Bert and Arthur also went into the transport industry with cream, milk, mail and school runs in the Witta and Curramore area.
Harold also joined the transport industry when, in 1950, he found work with Watson & Sons as a taxi driver in Maleny.
Harold had sustained serious injuries in 1946 following an industrial accident at the Maleny Cooperative store when he fell from about 10 meters onto a concrete floor whilst trying to stop water damage to the store during a cyclone. It was believed at the time that he would not walk again, however he did better than walking again, he was able to find work as a taxi driver.
There were three taxis in Maleny at that time. People weren’t as mobile in those days. Cars were not generally owned by people. At the start to holiday periods it was nothing to have up to seventeen bus loads of people bring brought into town from the Landsborough Railway Station by Watson’s Transport.
Even then, Maleny depended on the tourist industry for some of its sustenance. Most people stayed at the pub or the guest house.
Nephew Chris also went into the transport industry as director/owner of Goldlink Petroleum, B.P. Agents
for the Sunshine Coast-South Burnett Area. Now Chris Brooker’s daughter, Joanne is the proud owner/operator of a Maleny school bus run. So the transport tradition with the Brooker family and Maleny moves into the next generation.
In one family generation from horse-wagon on mud based roadways to 22 wheeler semi trailers travelling at over 100kph on bitumen roads carrying bulk fuel.

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!
Buying & Selling Residential Property in Queensland Cooling-off period
With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny
Most residential property sales in Queensland are subject to a buyer’s cooling-off period of five (5) business days commencing on the date a buyer or their lawyer receives a copy of the contract signed by both a buyer and a seller.
If you as a buyer decide not to proceed within that period, you must give notice to the seller in the specified way to cancel the contract.
Also, you must pay the seller 0.25 per cent of the purchase
price of the property. If your deposit exceeds the 0.25 per cent, the balance must be refunded to you.
Auctions
It’s important to note that no cooling-off period applies to buyers who purchase at an auction, or to contracts that a registered bidder enters into by 5pm on the second clear business day after a property was passed in at auction.

Did you Know?
That In 1992 John O’ Sullivan and the CSIRO developed Wi-Fi technology, used by more than a billion people around the world today. The core parts of the technology came out of research in the mid-1970s in the field of radio astronomy, when John and his colleagues at the CSIRO were originally looking for the faint echoes of black holes.
As a result of this work, the CSIRO has held key patents for Wi-Fi technology since the mid-1990s, bringing the organisation millions of dollars in royalties every year.

“Heavenly Birthday” Dolly!!!
As you know one of my passions is to raise funds for the charity, Dolly’s Dream. This organisation was created by Kate and Tick Everett following the shattering loss of their 14-year-old daughter, Dolly, to suicide, after ongoing bullying.
Kate and Tick’s goal is to prevent other families walking this road.
Well, this week, Dolly would have been 21 years old. In her memory, we ask that you pause today to be kind to one another, to remember the power of words and – in Dolly's own words – to speak even if your voice shakes.
Our thoughts today are with everyone who has had their lives touched by Dolly and her legacy.
Dolly’s parents, Kate and Tick wish to thank all our donors and well-wishers and helpers who “made it happen” for what Dolly's Dream has achieved this year.
They want to change the culture of bullying by addressing the impact of bullying through education and direct support to young people and families
If you or anyone you know needs help, please speak even if your voice shakes and call our support line on 0488 881 033.

Who Remembers this?
“Aerial View of Maleny approx 1970. Oh - just how things have changed over the past 60 plus years! Pretty as a picture! Overlooking Bunya Street and the Maleny State School circa 1970. Notice that the top end of Bunya Street towards the high school did not exist that time know did the Maleny HighSchool. Riverside Centre was still to come in the future. The green area above the red hooves was Hoppers Dairy farm, an area that is now covered with houses. Just how the area has changed in just 50 short years.
