Romantic Night - 1930’s …sitting by the reside!
The Queensland re season has arrived very early for 2023. This comes as the state suffers from a dry winter and hotter temperatures tan normal. Coming into October those conditions were exaggerated by the introduction of strong warm winds that pre-dried any moisture that may have been around away. Throughout much of Queensland during the month of October res have been raging, devouring much natural bushland. The most serious res were in the South Western part of the state around Tara where about 50 houses were destroyed and the town of Wallangarra was miraculously saved by dedicated re ghters who waged a massive re ghting effort on Tuesday.and then a last minute wind change and these of large tanker planes dropping re retardant. Many people were in the process of leaving their homes to go to an evacuation centre that was established at Stanthorpe’s Civic Centre, then at the last moment the fast approaching re was upon them and they had no option but to stay where they were and “hope for the best”.
re rating.
Closer to home serious res burnt in the forestry areas around Landsbouough and Beerwah then later in the Obi Obi Valley north of Maleny as conditions on the Sunshine Coast reached a high level
A Maleny RFB spokesperson said, “Maleny RFB crews have also been assisting our colleagues in the South West & Central Region of Queensland for the last month, we are now travelling north to help around Bundaberg. A MASSIVE thanks to the crews on deployment and those that remained here in Maleny working our area” Unfortunately, it would rst appear that some of the res in the Beerwah - Landsborough area may have been deliberately lit. Inquiries by police are continuing. Make sure you stay up to date with the latest warnings on the QFES website and social media channels.

Maleny Pool Update
for hard infrastructure upgrades such as the amenities block, disability access and any changes to the pool itself. The lease would only require Council to take over the day-to-day operating costs - I’ve subsequently been told this would equate to about $100,000 per year (at the most). This partnership works successfully in many other jurisdictions across Queensland. Out of respect, I have waited to see if Council would accept the solution. To date, I’ve had no formal response.
I met with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council back on 30 June 2023 - long before this summer pool season.
Please know, I completely agree it is unacceptable for Maleny and Blackall Range residents to be without a pool.
I put on the table the option of the State leasing the pool to the Council for a “peppercorn” amount (e.g. $1/year). The State would continue to be responsible
I have, and will continue to, do everything I can to get the pool reopened. But I need Council to be a willing partner.
Just some local news from Fisher Mr. Andrew Wallace Federal MP for Fisher Port of Darwin Security
The present Federal government has chosen NOT to cancel the PortOfDarwin contract. There was no announcement. No press conference. No explanation as to how the decision is consistent with their DefenceStrategicReview. All we had was a quiet, last-minute media release. Although The Prime Minister promised a serious look at the matter he is now just sweeping his decision under the rug. Australians expect their Prime Minister to stick by the courage of their convictions.
Booroobin is a secret treasure in the southern Fisher hinterland, and the source of both the Stanley River and the Mary River. Once home to TWO schools, the town has become a fantastic

New Fire Rating Sign
Hell!, it’s Dry, But that might change!
It has been so dry of late and this has caused bush res to be more serious than usual, but this might be about to change. According to the Bureau of Metrology in southeast Queensland and eastern NSW, most regions will see at least 25mm of rainfall over the week beginning November 3rd. Unfortunately, the nature of storms is that nature should deliver pockets of much heavier rain, even in a matter of hours.
A new Australian Fire Danger Rating System sign has been recently installed in Maleny, on Macadamia Drive, Maleny. It is highly visible and is a positive situational awareness for community members and visitors alike. It comes at a very opportune time as bush res are spreading across Queensland countryside.
This follows Australia's lowest SeptemberOctober rainfall on record. To keep up to date visit: https://disasterhub.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ #Dashboard.

Receiving specialist treatment is critical to stroke recovery and gives survivors the best chance of living well after stroke and returning to doing the things they love.
The prevalence of strokes in Queensland has been on the rise due to factors such as a high proportion of elderly residents and lifestyle choices. Queensland's warm climate attracts retirees, contributing to an aging population susceptible to stroke. Furthermore, lifestyle factors like high rates of obesity, smoking, and limited physical activity increase the risk of stroke among Queenslanders.

In Queensland strokes are more common in older age groups— over 2 in 3 (71%) people who had a stroke were aged 65 and over. Proportions were highest for those aged 85 and over—almost 3 times as high as for those aged 65–74 That puts the “baby-boomer” generation at the heart of this problem. Repairing rotting wooden windows” CAUSE The problem normally starts with the paint breakdown through one simple factor…..co-ef cient differentials of expansion and contraction. In plain terms, where the paint system bridges a 90 degree angle with a sharp internal corner, the 2 timbers move at different rates according to their densities/ thicknesses and as a result “stretch” the paints beyond their ability to maintain relative adhesion to the timber. This occurs as the paint weathers and loses its exibility. Once the paints have cracked in the internal corners, it’s an avenue for water to seep into the wood. From here on it’s a progressive step to decay. Once the saturation level of the wood reaches in excess of 25%, the air-borne mould spore carried into the timber start to propagate and then devour the lignin and cellulose of the wood, thus creating a moist environment, and exponential
decay. Less than 25% saturation, the mould spore will remain dormant and inactive.
REPAIR An assessment of the decay has to be made in the rst instance. If the decay has gone too far, the only sensible remedy is to remove and replace. However if there is still some structural integrity, saturating the soft dozy timber with NORGLASS NORSEAL can provide a permanent solution. To do this remove (by sanding) any residual paint, then drill holes randomly along the sill, at about a 30 degree angle. Then mix up a volume (250ml mix) of Norseal and using a small funnel pour the mixture into the
holes. As the Norseal drains away, come back and re ll them. Repeat a few times and then coat the entire sill. Leave to cure for about 48 hours. A plastic cover should be placed over the sill to prevent dew (or rain) gaining access. Next, ll the holes with NORGLASS NORFILL, a white epoxy ller. As well as lling the holes, use the Nor ll to radius out the internal 90 degree angles using a paddle pop stick or back of a teaspoon. What this does is to contain the lateral differentials of both timber interfaces, thus preventing further internal paint cracking. This is essential to the longevity of the paint structure…and the ongoing problem is solved. Now paint the surface with NORGLASS PRICOAT and nish with NORGLASS WEATHERFAST PREMIUM ENAMEL. All available at Maleny Paint Supplies.

Words from Mr. Andrew Powell M.P

With her incredible organisational skills, infectious and wicked sense of humour (and dazzling dimple), Gail was a leader who was loved but also invisible she got things done but always let others claim it as their success. Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer. Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies. An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, ood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search. Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way. Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..
to: raise awareness of how people can play a role in creating an all-abilities Queensland. Disability Action Week celebrates Queenslanders with disability and the contributions they make in our families, communities, workplaces and to our state's economy. With Queensland growing rapidly and unemployment remaining below 4% long-term, recruiting and retaining staff continues to be challenging. Queensland businesses wanting to identify opportunities in these market conditions need to think outside the square. Workforce diversity relates not only to staff having diverse cultural backgrounds, abilities, genders and ages but also different life experiences, talents, and quali cations. This Disability Action Week the Queensland Government is encouraging employers to consider how improving access will boost their bottom line — both by recruiting and retaining staff with disability and taking steps to be accessible to customers living with disability. More than one million Australians with disability currently thrive in Australian workplaces, across all sectors and industries, including senior and leadership roles. During this week the Sunshine Coast Council will run a number of events and they can be found on the Council website.

World War I was an international con ict that raged between 1914 and 1918. It embroiled most of the nations of Europe along with Russia, the U.S., the Middle East, and other regions. It was supposed to be “The War to end all Wars”. On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minute’s silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died ghting to protect the nation. At 11am on 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The Germans called for an armistice (suspension of ghting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted the allied terms of unconditional surrender. Remembrance Day in Australia, observed on the 11th of November each year, holds a special place in the hearts of Australians as a time to re ect, pay tribute, and honour the sacri ces made by the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the Australian Defence Force. This solemn day is also an opportunity to remember those who lost their lives in con icts and wars, especially World War I, where the armistice was signed on this very date in 1918. Originally known as Armistice Day, it was renamed Remembrance Day after World War Two to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars.
The red poppy ower, inspired by the poignant war poem "In Flanders Fields," by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae has become a symbol of Remembrance Day, signifying the bloodshed and bravery of those who served. On this day, Australians across the nation gather at war memorials, schools, and workplaces, observing a minute's silence at 11 a.m. to mark the exact moment when the armistice was declared. This brief moment of stillness and re ection provides a powerful reminder of the enormous
Flanders Fields was a major battle theatre on the Western Front during the First World War. A million soldiers from more than 50 different countries were wounded, missing or killed in action here. Entire cities and villages were destroyed, their population scattered across Europe and beyond.

sacri ces made for the freedoms we enjoy today. Remembrance Day ceremonies often feature veterans, current servicemen and women, and young students who participate in readings, recitations, and laying wreaths in honour of the fallen. The Australian War Memorial in Canberra is a focal point for national commemorations, while local communities organise their own events, reinforcing the signi cance of Remembrance Day on a grassroots level. In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on educating younger generations about the historical importance of Remembrance Day, ensuring that the legacy of those who served is not forgotten. Schools play a pivotal role in this effort, fostering an understanding of the nation's history and the enduring values of sacri ce, courage, and mate-ship. Remembrance Day ceremonies are conducted simultaneously in towns and cities all over the cAustralia, culminating at the moment of burial at 11.00am and coinciding with the traditional two minutes' silence.

On 11 November 1920, the second anniversary of the Armistice, the commemoration became a funeral when the remains of an unknown soldier were returned from the battle elds of the Western Front. Who Gives A Crap? -
We Do!
What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets? We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under ve dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Pro ts from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
Truthful Jones says
Well, we thought that after the vote for the Voice was over that would be the end of the matter! No, not so lucky. Even though almost 70% of the nation voted “NO” the matter is still causing an inordinate amount of political headwinds. There is no doubt that Australians want to see a better way forward for the indigenous people, they must be treated as equal to every other Australian. There must be a better way to bring their living standards up to the same level as everyone else. One would have expected that would have already been done with the huge amounts of taxpayers cash that has been thrown at the problem. What is more there is a number of indigenous members of parliament throughout the various levels of government in Australia and should not they be ensuring that a voice within the parliament is heard for all - including indigenous members of our communities. One could not be blamed for thinking that our politicians have not been listening and are only too willing to “throw money” at the problem then walk away and wash their hands of the problem. This will never be a satisfactory solution to the problem and any politician or public servant who cannot work effectively on the problem then it may be time to leave that profession and nd something more to their style of life. All members of our communities need to be heard and this has been denied by politicians and bureaucrats in many cases, not only to indigenous members. The effect on people of the NO vote has apparently been life altering and now Queensland public servants have been offered ve days’ special paid leave for psychological distress to grieve the outcome of the failed Voice to Parliament referendum. This is in spite of the democratic and extremely expensive manner in which the referendum was held. It is a bit like rewarding a naughty child who didn’t get their own way. Not to be outdone the major banks have also offered the leave to staff, along with counselling. Other big businesses have offered free 24/7 counselling for their staff as well as speci c indigenous speci c support.
And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t” That a blonde and a redhead have a cattle station in the Northern Territory. They have just lost their bull. The women need to buy another, but only have $500. The redhead tells the blonde, "I will go to the market and see if I can nd one for under that amount. If I can, I will send you a telegram. " She goes to the market and nds one for $499. Having only one dollar left, she goes to the telegraph of ce and nds out that it costs one dollar per word. She is stumped on how to tell the blonde to bring the truck and trailer. Finally, she tells the telegraph operator to send the word "comfortable." Skeptical, the operator asks, "How will she know to come with the trailer from just that word?” The redhead replies, "She's a blonde so she reads slow: 'Come for ta bull.'"
The Rain Forgets to Fall It doesn’t seem to be long ago, but in February 2022 Obi Creek was running swiftly and almost reached the roadway at the Maple Street Bridge in Maleny. Since then there has been a dearth of rainfall and the area is getting pretty dry. Some rain is needed to ll the tanks and give the grass a bit to grow.
These actions will only put more pressure on division between members of the Australian community. It is the division that is causing anxiety throughout our communities. By grouping one section of our communities different to the rest will only continue dividing the community, not bringing about reconciliation. Time to x problems - not just hide them - real solutions are needed NOW!

“Getting to the Top”
“Back in Queensland”
….. continuing on with my mission!
Well, another day nished, I’ve spent the last couple weeks working for Berry Springs Mechanical driving their Tilt tray truck around Darwin doing everything from rescuing backpackers in national parks to moving farm machinery between properties. This has put me in a bit of unique situation, it’s a job that I really enjoy, even late night call outs. Mostly because it’s a job where I get to help people. Now there’s only 2 months until Christmas and it’s going to take me a minimum of 1.5 months to drive to Tassie… now according to the plan I should get underway as soon as possible so I can y home from Tassie for Christmas and my 21st BDay but unfortunately my right hand nal Drive has started to show a bit of silver in the ole oil, now I’m not overly concerned, they’re straight cut gears and having done nearly 20,000kms which is god knows how many rotations a bit of wear is to be expected… however if it shits itself this close to Christmas in the middle of the Australian outback I’ll have absolutely Buckley’s chance of getting it xed and keeping to my schedule, which could also leave me in an area where I wouldn’t have anywhere I know that’s safe to leave my camp to y home and so I’m in half a mind to stay in Darwin over the wet, put my camp somewhere safe over Christmas when I go home to see the folks (only happens a few times a year) and then make the

bolt down to Tassie at the start of next year on the Tail end of the Wet… in the meantime I’ve got my hands full helping out driving the truck most days from 7am5-6pm so I might not be on my socials as much, but I’m having fun. One of the things I enjoy the most about Darwin is that most people know me and recognise me but I’m just “Sam” not The Travelling Jackaroo, it’s a nice break to just blend in for a bit (although my hat gives me away ) Anyways for those that don’t wanna read all that, to sum it up I’m contemplating staying in Darwin over the Wet because the tractors got a small issue that if it gets worse could stuff up my plans to y home for Chrissy, also if I leave for Tassi now I’ll be rushing and will miss a few places on SA and VIC. Take a gander at This car I spotted in Darwin, complete with machine gun. It is called The Combat Wombat. Maybe I could get some repower for Slim. Remember the men of the Australian Light Horse gave the last of their water to their horses, mounted up and executed the nal cavalry charge in history to take the wells of Beersheba for a drink.

Who
Remembers
this?
“How the West was Warped” early 1900’s.
This is one for true Malenyites, and it also is a tribute to the Denver Family. In the early 1990’s a serious traf c accident occurred on Kenilworth Road, Witta and a young female was trapped in the crashed car. Unfortunately, there was no readily available extraction gear in Maleny and it was necessary to wait for equipment to come up from the coast. The girl died in the car. The Maleny Rotary Club guaranteed a loan to purchase the gear at a cost of $65,000. A fundraising project began and as part of fundraising teachers from the Maleny High School presented a musical, “How the West was Warped” which was written by Simon Denver and music by High School music teacher Don Woodwood.
