Covid-19 virus more prevalent in Maleny than expected

The Queensland chief health of cer John Gerrard warns that he is expecting a future waves of the virus during the coming winter.

virus is going to be around for months, if not years”

He also stated that a Gold Coast study has shown that a signi cant number of people have been walking around Covid-positive without knowing it.

The Premier, Ms Palaszczuk slammed people on social media who were spreading misinformation about the virus. She said, “There is no reason why your children’s vaccination shouldn’t be at the same rate (as adults).”

Authorities reveal they believe that the rest of the Queensland communities if survey would also have similar results. As a result the Health Services still have to “plan for the worst”. Dr Gerrard said “There are presently 764 people being treated in hospital and another 74 people were being treated in private hospitals. Presently those numbers are coming down slowly . Queensland has recorded 218 deaths since the Omicron wave started in midDecember 2021.” He continued, “About one third of Queenslanders are expected to be infected in this wave of Omicron. The

There are 89.63 per cent of people fully vaccinated and 92.03 per cent of people with a rst dose

With children going back to school, Dr Gerrard said; “I don’t want parents to be frightened, but if I had children going back to school I’d want them to be vaccinated. There is no reason why your children’s vaccination shouldn’t be at the same rate as adults”.

Covid Proof of vaccination Entry to many Queensland locations and businesses is now restricted to those who are fully vaccinated. If you are 16 years or over, you will need to carry proof of your vaccination status and be prepared to show this upon request. Proof of vaccination veri es that a person is fully vaccinated. You must show either a printed or electronic form before entering a business establishment or venue. Masks have been re-introduced under certain circumstances. You will still need to use the Check-In Qld app at public venues. You can add your COVID-19 digital certi cate to the Check In Qld app. For more information visit: https://www.covid19.qld.gov.au/check-in-qld/digitalvaccination-certi cate.

Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston To contact Cr Winston Johnston winston.johnston@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Can you believe that it is February already? Can you believe we are now into our second month of 2022 already? I hope everyone in our division had a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s break with your friends and family, I know I certainly enjoyed the quality time. Thank you to those critical front-line workers who have continued to keep our region safe, supported, looking fantastic and the community happy over the holiday period. I look forward to delivering more community and infrastructure projects throughout Division 5 this year.

Landslip repairs at Bald Knob Over the Christmas and New Year break, council’s civil asset management of cers responded to several urgent and hazardous maintenance jobs including a landslip at Bald Knob. On Sunday, January 2, of cers responded to community reports about dangerous conditions on Ensby Road resulting from a landslip. Temporary minor realignment works were constructed to allow driver access. A Geotechnical Engineer inspected the site on January 11 with further subsurface investigation to occur shortly to establish permanent repairs.

Parks tip-top despite rain delays We take pride in making sure our Sunshine Coast parks and gardens look green and great. The recent wet weather has delayed some of our mowing and maintenance services across the Sunshine Coast. Right now, our teams are

busy caring for our 1183 hectares of parklands and reserves across the Sunshine Coast region…that’s equivalent to 1690 football elds! We would like to thank our community and visitors for their patience while we catch up. If we get enough dry weather, our parks and gardens and other grassed areas will quickly return to tip-top condition. If COVID-19 does impact our workforce numbers, which it may do from time to time, we may need to adjust our service scheduling. We assure you we will prioritise our cleaning services and direct resources to urgent and hazardous matters to keep our community safe.

Obi Lane widening Maleny Construction has started on widening Obi Lane, between Gardners Lane to Porters Lane, Maleny. You might have noticed a compound site set up along North Maleny Road for the temporary storage of materials and vehicles for construction work. The upgrade is on track for completion in March, weather permitting. I look forward to delivering this much needed upgrade as part of the Capital Works program to improve our sealed road network across Division 5.

Carpark Upgrade Design Bicentenary Lane During the next few weeks surveyors and design crews will be working in Bicentenary Lane. Council is planning for some much needed additional street parking and this preliminary work will assist with the development of angle parking on the southern side of Bicentenary Lane.

Keeping you connected Please do keep an eye on my Facebook page for the latest Division 5 news and information. Visit www.facebook.com/winstonjohnstondivision5scc

So much for the State Government integrity

Everyday the integrity inferno engul ng the State Government intensi es. The Integrity Commissioner quits after laptop is seized and the CCC Chair quits after shocking report. Then the State Archivist was forced out, saying he was blocked from doing his job and the list goes on. The Premier must agree to a Royal Commission into integrity in Queensland. We, the LNP Opposition will leave no stone unturned because integrity matters. We need Fitzgerald 2.0.

New Combined Fire and Emergency Services Complex in Maleny

Since the opening of the new Emergency Services building in Macadamia Drive, Maleny it has been a busy time moving in and getting everything organised and preparing for the next re season.

Severe storm creates damage As Ex TC Seth crosses the coast recently the area received heavy rainfall with when joined by strong winds caused roof damage to a number of residences, both locally and in the Nambour area. It also brought down trees onto roadways. The Maleny group assisted the Nambour group with their tasks as well as doing local jobs.

With the wet season we have had over the past few months there will certainly be plenty of fuel for the next re season. With winter coming on it will soon be time to get your rural property ready for the next season. Great training night. One of our members gave a fantastic talk to the crew. Who better than a zoologist, ecologist & conservationist to talk about re, the environment and cultural burns.

Draw the line Don’t drive through oodwater During sustained periods of wet weather, one of the key safety messages is simple: don’t drive through oodwaters. Doing so will likely severely damage your vehicle and could also put your life at risk. Irrespective of this continuing message drivers continue to take a chance and enter ood waters.

Our new HQ gives us a little more in facilities for training, not only on the theory side, but on the practical side. We are making the most of the new facilities which should also assist in attracting some new members. You can keep up to date with what we are doing by following us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/MalenyRFB-224789617706575

Few motorists realise that still waters can run deep and the ow in front of you could pack a punch of a tonne per metric metre, which can tear away the road surface and result in a much deeper gully than is apparent. Unfortunately, many owners of 4WD-road vehicles assume they are immune from ood waters. Fastowing force can overcome four-wheel drive just as easy as overcoming normal cars. Modern cars with electrically powered windows and locks are almost impossible to escape from once water nds its way into wiring and motors, disabling switchgear and pressing on bodywork. You only have to check the news sites for evidence of people who take the risk and enter oodwaters but that decision becoming a death wish. Maleny SES is always looking for new members. - do you think that you can assist your community during times of stress.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions Following the 1987 - 1989 Fitzgerald Inquiry into alleged corruption and abuse of power in Queensland which took almost two years major changes were made to the policing and political landscape in Queensland. As a result of the inquiry integrity and accountability in public of ce, including policing faced major changes that it was alleged would help to restore con dence in our public institutions. To this end the Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) was established in 1989 to investigated police and public sector misconduct. From the outset the CJC had unique powers to investigate suspected police misconduct and of cial misconduct in the public sector. Those powers included the power to require a person to furnish a statement of information to the Commission, compel the production of records and things relevant to an investigation, summons people to attend the Commission and give evidence and most importantly conduct hearings at which witnesses were compelled to give evidence on oath and produce documents. Those powers were extremely intimidating and were likened to being investigated in a “Star Chamber” with little regard to individual witnesses legal rights. The Parliamentary Criminal Justice Commission is a parliamentary oversight body to the CJC and is charged with the responsibility to monitor and review the discharge of the functions of the CJC to ensure its accountability. Unfortunately, both bodies have gone about their duties at great expense with little respect to individual persons rights. In 2001 the CJC merged with the QCC to form the Crime and Misconduct Commission. The public needs to have absolute con dence in the anticorruption watchdog in this state and that it be completely impartial. The Commission corruption is supposed to be the major crime ghting body and has been given extraordinary powers by the parliament. With those powers should come extraordinary responsibility, but what has come is arrogance and an appearance of self-importance. It is so important that Queensland CCC is a strong corruption watchdog, but one in which the community can have con dence that is is relevant, reliable, impartial and itself abides by the laws of the state. Public con dence is something that it does not have at the present time.

Truthful Jones says

And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t” Truthful tells us that his niece, a blonde walks into a bank in Brisbane and asks for the loan of cer. She says she’s going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank of cer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so the blonde hands over the keys to a new Holden SS ute. The car is parked on the street in front of the bank; she has the title, and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank Manages and his of cers all enjoy a good laugh at the blonde for using a $70.000 car as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drives the Holden into the bank’s underground garage and parks it there in a high security area. Two weeks later, Truthful’s niece returns and repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan of cer says, “Miss, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely; but we are a little puzzled. We checked you out and found that you are a millionaire. What puzzles us is - why would you bother to borrow $5,000?” The blond replies..... ”Where else in Brisbane can I park my car for two weeks in a high security area for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?” Morale; Never judge a book by the cover. There can be a lot more between the covers that is not always readily evident to the unsuspecting. Shop Locally & Shop with a Friend 11

Meet Chihera Aico - and she is scary! Eric was the rst British robot, built in 1928 by First World War veteran Captain William Richards, and aircraft engineer Alan Reffel

O

ver the past couple of years , thanks mainly to the Covid pandemic the world has changed remarkably. Because of the virus many industries have been unable to nd suf cient skilled workers to keep them operating at an ef cient pace. To you and I this has resulted in shortages of many items and foods that we use on a day to day basis just look at the shelves in the IGA and Woolworths stores and delivery times for products ordered online. Farmers and rural businesses are having an even bigger problem with insuf cient workers to help hardest crops. Well, I would like you to meet Chihira Aico. She is a mature 32 years old, although, technically, she was born in September 2014.

with the increasing demands, the increasing costs of employing humans and in some cases other factors that contribute to the shortages of basic goods.

Chihira Aico

Most of the robots are super-intelligent with humanlike heads and with realistic facial expression. They are powered by arti cial intelligence, can blink, talk, and look from side to side. The reason for creating a robot that looks human-like is to interact with people in such situations as employment in health care facilities and other similar situations such as food services. In October 2017 a Chinese made robot named “Sophia” made history as the Worlds rst robot to gain a citizenship when it was made an of cial citizen of Saudi Arabia.

She says, “Look how expressive I am as she blinks her piercing blue eyes! Then she bursts into song singing her rendition of the John Denver song Take Me Home, Country Roads. If that is not enough she is already fully quali ed to work as a personal assistant in an of ce or as a personal carer in a retirement home. She will soon also be quali ed for more technical medical situations such as in a hospital.

Honda Motor Corporation’s Asimo, with its humanoid appearance and ability to walk and climb stairs, has been dubbed the world’s most advanced robot. Asimo, as it is known is primarily a PR device whose ultimate function is in domestic settings or helping the elderly. Which one is which?

What is more she is not a bad looker. This Japanese beauty is just one of the robots designed and released by the Toshiba Corporation and has been demonstrated at a number of Consumer Electrical Shows around the world. The Toshiba Corporation is developing this robot for a wide range of tasks in the human health sector where duties would include monitoring and diagnosis of patients. Other versions of this robot are already being designed to work in the banking, food and service industries. Toshiba is only but one corporation working on developing such robots to take over tasks from humans. The robot-rush is part of a large-scale upswing in investment as companies look for ways to keep up

Witta Cemetery “Gets a Spring Clean” Congratulations to the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club's Duke of Edinburgh Award entrants and the fabulous work they are doing. 16 to18-year-olds Jack (PCYC Brisbane), Jasper, Callum, Hannah and Alex (Moreton Bay College) cleaned every headstone and all the tiled graves at Witta Cemetery with just water, scrubbing brush and elbow grease in 4 days for their residential project for the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Under the supervision of Adventurous Journey Supervisor Frances, they stayed in the old SES building at the Maleny Showgrounds and travelled to Witta each day to clean headstones at the Witta cemetery. The headstones have taken on a new life and the cemetery looks loved and cared for once again. Top work!

Now raised over $50,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor!!

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Where is Sam, The Travelling Jackaroo?

So, for everyone wondering, yes I am leaving Darwin eventually. It’s been a bit of a run about with Covid, Christmas and the wet season. I’ve been camped here in a small town about 50kms from Darwin, Berry Springs for some months and have gotten to know most of the locals quite well. You know you’ve been in a town too long when you walk into the pub and the barmaid says “hi Sam the usual?”,a lemonade of course). Becky and her team at Berry Springs Mechanical have been a huge help and are turning out to be some of the best people I’ve ever met, Beckie has also been employing me to help around her property and Ben (one of her mechanics) has taken me all over Darwin.

We are working on getting Slim back on the road in the next few weeks hopefully. The wet season's heavy rains and WA supposedly throwing open the border gates on the 6th February and that makes me think I’m going to have to do 2 weeks quarantine regardless. The last few months I’ve gotten quite used to spending time with a few people I know quite well and haven’t exactly been out and about in Darwin town - trying to limit the amount of potential covid exposure as there are some elderly people at the park I’m staying at, under the watchful eye of Daniel and Angela Garlick who have been looking after me and keeping me busy helping out around the caravan park to earn my keep.

Something no one tells you before you become well known is that you need to realise that people will know you - as funny as that sounds, which even after 10 Months on the road still is still a foreign feeling to me. Anyways to sum up, Berry Springs in awesome, Beckie, Judd, Benjamin, Cam, Dan, Ang and many others really make this place feel like a second home, which is gonna hurt to leave but itchy feet always prevail in the end unfortunately. Cheers Everyone and thanks for following me on my blog: https://www.facebook.com/thetravellingjackaroo Here's to a cheeky-faced young Australian with a big heart and n even bigger dream. Bon voyage from Maleny, and safe travels Sam. You can follow Sam’s adventures via his Facebook Page at “The Travelling Jackaroo”

Selling or buying a property!

Don’t be alarmed!

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny The new year has brought with it numerous changes in the law around real estate sales in Queensland, not the least of which involve utterly essential smoke alarms. For example, the new laws state that smoke alarms must: be installed in each bedroom; on each storey of a house and in hallways which connect bedrooms to the rest of the house; be photoelectric and comply with AS 3786-2014; be powered by either 240 volt or a 10-year lithium battery; and be interconnected with every other smoke alarm in the house so they all activate together. Smoke alarms must meet these requirements prior to the contract being signed and if the

seller doesn’t comply, the buyer is entitled to an adjustment (read penalty) at settlement equal to 0.15% of the purchase price. If the seller has not complied after settlement, the buyer must install compliant smoke alarms.

With so many new laws to adhere to, it is recommended that sellers use a professional smoke alarm provider to upgrade the smoke alarms in their properties. We strongly recommended sellers book their properties in for a smoke alarm upgrade when listing their properties for sale as they are competing for available smoke alarm providers, with hundreds of rental properties that also need to comply with the new 2022 laws.

of a new lease or a lease renewal. Research suggests only 50% of Queensland rentals are currently compliant, creating a wait time of four to six weeks for a smoke alarm upgrade according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ).

From 1 January 2022 all rental properties must comply with the new law at commencement

Who

Remembers

this?

…not that long ago!

The Boxsell Building - 15 Maple Street, Maleny Just an interesting thought for newer comers to Maleny maybe the photo below of 15 Maple Street, Maleny, The Boxsells Building. Today the building is occupied by Boxsells Real Estate, Maleny Medical Centre The Soap Bar and others. In years not too long past the building played an important part of Maleny’s history and has done so since 1907 when it was occupied by the Maleny Dairy as a store. Over the years it has housed many businesses, including “The Maleny Emporium”, a general merchants store owned by the Myers Family, Hirst Family and the Waddell Family, it was also the areas fuel distribution point during the rationing period of WW11, thus the fuel bowsers standing outside the building in the photo below. Between 1961 and 1971 it housed Edgar Cranney Real Estate and Livestock agency which was taken over by Kenilworth’s Boxsell family in 1971. From here the Boxsells ran their cattle sale yards which were situated where Woolworths now stands in Maleny. Just another memory of Maleny’s past.
