In Motor Vehicle Repairs, Experience Counts

Keeping your Car shiny and spotless pays dividends

Maleny Accident Repair Centre looks after our locals as well as from the surrounding area’s.

Not only will a well maintained paint job play its role in car rust prevention, but it will also attract more buyers, and in turn, will be able command a higher resale value. Spending top dollar for a top-down mechanical refurbishment would count for nothing if buyers are turned away by its old and weathered appearance in the rst place. And when it comes to the business of buying and selling, rst impressions always count for a lot.

This car enthusiast from Caloundra drove all the way to Maleny to get his car painted by us as he said "you have the best off the gun nish I have seen".

Well, how is that for a good endorsement. You too can have this quality nish when you get your repairs done at Maleny Accident Repair Centre.

That being said, keeping your paint in good nick doesn't have to be a chore as long as you stick to a few key car wash tips and practices.

What is the safest way to park?

Car paint preventative maintenance boils down to one essential rule of thumb, and that is to reduce its exposure to the elements as much as possible. Ultraviolet rays from the sun, and acid rain can weather and damage a car's paint layers, causing it to lose its lustre over the years.

The NRMA Insurance Company advises that the safest way to park, believe it or not, is reverse parking.

If a car's paint is exposed to the sun, or rained upon often, it is recommended to wash and wax the car more often to protect it from the harsh conditions here in Australia. Not only are bird droppings unsightly and unhygienic, it is also highly acidic. Under intense sunlight, which can soften the paint's clear coat, the droppings' acidic composition can dissolve the paint, permanently damaging it.

It gives you greater control and makes it easier to manoeuvre out the space when you’re ready to roll.

Windscreens Severely damaged windscreens can not only obscure the driver’s vision, but also weaken the car’s structure and affect the way passenger side airbags deploy. Some windscreen damage can be repaired however other types will necessitate replacement.

What should you do if a car wash had scratched your car? There really isn't much the general consumer can do, besides taking the car to a pro-detailer to have it looked upon to 'correct' the paint and remove car wash scratches, and taking careful measures to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

Windscreen repairs must comply with the relevant Australian Standard.

Maleny Accident Repair Centre can make your car look like new again!

Repairing rotting wooden windows CAUSE

25% saturation, the mould spore will remain dormant and inactive.

The problem normally starts with the paint breakdown through one simple factor…..co-ef cient differentials of expansion and contraction.

REPAIR An assessment of the decay has to be made in the rst instance. If the decay has gone too far, the only sensible remedy is to remove and replace.

In plain terms, where the paint system bridges a 90 degree angle with a sharp internal corner, the 2 timbers move at different rates according to their densities/ thicknesses and as a result “stretch” the paints beyond their ability to maintain relative adhesion to the timber.

However if there is still some structural integrity, saturating the soft dozy timber with NORGLASS NORSEAL can provide a permanent solution. To do this remove (by sanding) any residual paint, then drill holes randomly along the sill, at about a 30 degree angle.

This occurs as the paint weathers and loses its exibility. Once the paints have cracked in the internal corners, it’s an avenue for water to seep into the wood. From here on it’s a progressive step to decay.

Then mix up a volume (250ml mix) of Norseal and using a small funnel pour the mixture into the holes. As the Norseal drains away, come back and re ll them.

Once the saturation level of the wood reaches in excess of 25%, the air-borne mould spore carried into the timber start to propagate and then devour the lignin and cellulose of the wood, thus creating a moist environment, and exponential decay. Less than

A plastic cover should be placed over the sill to prevent dew (or rain) gaining access. Next, ll the holes with NORGLASS NORFILL, a white epoxy ller. As well as lling the holes, use the Nor ll to radius out the internal 90 degree angles using a paddle pop stick or back of a teaspoon. What this does is to contain the lateral differentials of both timber interfaces, thus preventing further internal paint cracking. This is essential to the longevity of the paint structure…and the ongoing problem is solved.

All available at Maleny Paint Supplies.

Repeat a few times and then coat the entire sill. Leave to cure for about 48 hours.

Monitor your tyres Most of us know tyres are dangerous when they’re old and worn out, but did you know they’re also dangerous with the wrong tyre pressure? The correct tyre pressure allows your car to effectively accelerate, corner, brake and grip the road. It also enables your car to run more ef ciently, so you’ll spend less on fuel. Didn’t realise this? You’re not alone. Optimum tyre pressure varies depending on the make and model of your car. Experts recommend you check your tyre pressure every two to three weeks. The pressure is shown in your owner’s manual.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts The tragic death of Kate Leadbetter and Matthew Field walking their dog in Alexandra Hills in a freak accident by a drugged up 17 year old in a stolen car is closer to Maleny than you might think and has hit many Malenyites very hard. A 17 year old, who is now charged with two counts of murder with a possibly third charge to be laid for the unborn child also killed in the chaos. Throughout Queensland on a daily basis we are reading and hearing about an increasing number of serious offences, many of which lead to serious injury or death being committed by young offenders. The softly softly approach presently used by Department of Children Services and Department of Justice Court judgement is clearly not working and has not worked since it was implemented at least two decades ago. It is time that a fresh look was taken at the need to rejuvenate the way in which young offenders are dealt with in circumstances of criminal breaches. The sad reality is neither side of politics will actually bite the bullet but would prefer to hand out cheap candy to the demise of our society and great nation. In an effort to reduce the statistical number of crimes various governments are proposing that the criminal responsibility for young offenders be raised. This proposal will do nothing to reduce the suffering within our community as offences will still be being committed, but will not be shown in statistics, giving the illusion that crime has actually been reduced. Simply throwing money at the problem without having a known achievable goal will not x the problem either. We have been trying that for decades to no avail, except allowing governments to “wash their hands of the matter” and say there is nothing more that can be done. There has to be more that can be done and other methods of moderating young criminal behaviour has to be tried. The community must also be involved in the solution, especially in close knit communities. Whilst no one is suggesting that individuals rights be taken away the same cannot be said about privileges bestowed by community. There is no one easy solution. Condolences to the families of Kate Leadbetter and Matthew Field and the myriad of others killed under similar circumstances.

Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell Sunshine Coast Rail duplication design changes are worrying

The Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade is causing confusion in the hinterland with residents reportedly shown an updated design of the project. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said he had been left with more questions than answers when it came to the long-awaited upgrade. He said he wanted to know what was happening with the project. He said he had been unable to get solid answers on where the multi million-dollar project was at. “Sadly, due to politics, I’ve not been able to get detailed brie ngs on what the latest design looks like, between Beerwah and Beerburrum,” he said. “I sought a brie ng before the election and basically got told ‘Sorry, we can't show you that at the moment we’re in discussions with the Federal Government’. “I get that those kind of discussions can occur but I do know they're having very detailed discussions with landholders about what the design looks like. “And that's frustrating because I’m actually here to help.” My main concern is about changes to the design.

“I’m concerned not only for the affected landholders but the broader community that they’re not quite aware of what might be the end product. “Don’t get me wrong I want the project to proceed. “I just want to see the changes. “One of the concerns is which of my constituents have had their properties resumed and which haven’t, so I can assist them in that process.” Mr Powell hasn’t been put off by the lack of communication, vowing to continue chasing an update. “Let’s have that open and frank conversation with the community so it doesn’t come as a shock and an annoyance,” he said. “Then we can explain it and work through how we can deliver this in a way that works for everyone.

Congratulations Mrs Norma McLeod OAM

“What I’m hearing from affected landholders is that the original designs, that were shown a couple of years ago, have changed signi cantly,” Mr Powell said.

Mrs Norma McLeod OAM of Maleny has been recognised for service to the Maleny community through her work with, and commitment to, Centre for Retirement Living (Blue Care), Maleny Show Society, Maleny Garden Club, Maleny Floral Art Group and the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital, to name just a few.

Street Libraries are, essentially, a box of books, planted in your front yard or footpath …. People can simply reach in and take any book that interests them; when they are done, they can return them to the Street Library network for others to read. Residents of Avocado Lane, Maleny are about to get their own street library thanks to retired resident, Ian Williams. If anyone has a book or two that they think others would enjoy, they can just pop it into any Street Library they happen to be walking past. What a great way to ensure that books are not only read, but re-read a number of times by various people.

To the north-east of Maleny is an area called Witta.

Witta, was rst settled by German immigrants around the late 1880‘s. once known as Teutoburgh in the 1880s. The name Teutoburgh came from a nearby German mission. Witta. In 1916, due to anti-German sentiment associated with the Great War, the town was renamed Witta.

Mitchell carried the young lad to Coochin Creek from where a steam ship loaded with timber travelled daily to Brisbane.

Scattered across the cemetery are the names of the rst German families who settled at Witta.

Depending on who tells the story there appears to be some difference of opinion about the name Witta. The most common explanation is that the name was derived from an Aboriginal word (either wutdah, meaning red cedar, or wetya, meaning dingo.) Hence the non-German pronunciation. Another

Mitchell stayed with the lad until he was well enough to return to his home Following his death in September 1919 Mitchell was buried in the Witta Cemetery. It was very uncommon for an aboriginal to be buried in a “white man’s cemetery” in those days.

In fact the Witta Cemetery came about as a result of a generous donation from the Van Dryke family in 1898. The rst aboriginal to be buried in the Witta Cemetery was “Mitchell the Aboriginal”. Mitchell was a

History of the Witta Cemetery and Mitchell the Aboriginal

Learn about Maleny’s local history

(Continued from previous Page) This occurred after Harry Warne, (Grandfather of Hilda Penny who still lives in Maleny), who was Chairman of the Council at the time is said to have said to a council meeting; “If any aboriginal deserves to be buried in a white-man’s cemetery it is Mitchell.”

Did you know that you could arrange for your group to have s tour of the Maleny Historical village to learn about some of Maleny’s history.

Local wood-worker, Ludwig Tesch built the cof n for Mitchell at the time. such was the communities feelings for Mitchell.

This is a great opportunity for newer Maleny residents to nd out a bit about the areas past and a bit about local settlers.

At the time Mitchell’s headstone was the biggest in the cemetery and remained as the biggest until today. On Wednesday April 22nd, 2009 the Maleny Historical Society in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council commemorated the refurbishment of Mitchell’s headstone which is still in the Witta Cemetery. The ceremony was attended by Councillors, Tim Dwyer, Deputy Mayor and local Councillor, Jenny Mckay.

You can also arrange to sample a traditional morning or afternoon tea.

The ceremony heard from Ms. Beverley Hand and Alex Bond, members of the Gubbi-Gubbi tribe.

Sustainable Living & Gardens With Grahame Staines

Sustainable Living & Aquaponics “After installing our Aquaponic system my view changed about what is possible to grow in our backyard. The ability to harvest organic vegetables from our raised garden beds and eat an organic sh once or twice a week from the same system was not only possible, it is cost effective and it takes very little of our time to maintain”.

balls and the grow beds are off the ground.

The system we have comprises of eight, one metre by one metre growing beds, four sh tanks where we can keep 80 full size sh and nurture 80 ngerlings.

Ground beds require weeding, digging, watering, chemicals and generally a lot of effort to produce

When you take into consideration the cost of fresh sh and organic vegetables and offset those by the running costs of an Aquaponics system, not to mention the health bene ts, this set up is an affordable system that could be in half of the populations backyards.

a crop, when Aquaponic systems eliminate ninety per cent of that work and produces healthy vegetables full of nutrients. We have people suggesting things like we should use bamboo toothbrushes to save the world and they are entitled to their opinion, but if we stop and think about the effect that growing our own food would have on the environment and our health we would all suggest this would be a better option. If you do make the decision to set up a system ask someone locally who has a system to mentor you. This will avoid a lot of mistakes and it will also provide you with a source of reliable local information that you won’t nd on the web.

Simply explained, an Aquaponic system recycles water between sh and vegetables giving both exactly what they need to grow healthy without the use of chemicals or fertilisers. Fish can be grown to plate size in twelve to fourteen months and vegetable from the system can be harvested daily.

All produce grown in the system is grown in either blue stone or clay
