Helps DV. Help with Phone donation

Sunshine Coast Council will donate 100 iPhones to local organisation DV Safe Phone to help domestic and family violence victims in need.

The phones are distributed to service agencies across the Sunshine Coast on behalf of DV Safe Phone.

Council is one of the rst local governments in Queensland to back this campaign which started in April last year, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and is designed to save lives.

People often wonder what they can do to help and say they don’t have that opportunity to intervene directly. Everyone can do something, if that means getting out your old phone and dropping it off, that in itself will make a difference to victims.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said Council was pleased to be making this contribution to DV Safe Phone’s campaign to get unused mobile phones out of people’s bottom drawers and into the hands of victims of domestic and family violence. “What we know is that many people escaping domestic and family violence often leave an unsafe situation with little to nothing – so this initiative is one small way to assist victims to reconnect with friends, families and the essential support services which they need,” Local Councillor Winston Johnston said. “Domestic and family violence has no place in our community. “Unfortunately however, on average 12 women each day are hospitalised* for assault injuries due to domestic and family violence.

Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout Queensland's vaccine strategy for Covid 19 rollout is guided by the COVID-19 vaccine National roll-out strategy. The object of the Queensland rollout aims to protect our most vulnerable Queenslanders and to maintain a robust health system and contain COVID-19 at our international borders by protecting priority frontline health care, border and quarantine workers.

Since the vaccine started rolling out this week, the Government have opened a one stop shop webpage for all information pertaining to the vaccine. You can check it out at https://www.qld.gov.au/.../protect.../covid-19vaccine The ‘information for’ section is particularly helpful. Every hospital and health service in Queensland will be providing vaccinations in Phase 1a which includes hospital emergency care and intensive care units,Queensland Ambulance Service frontline emergence service responders including retrieval teams, priority quarantine and border worker, and aged care residents and staff. The rollout will begin with the P zer vaccine at speci c vaccination hubs, the nearest to Maleny being at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Every eligible Queenslander will be given the opportunity to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible.

Over time the location of vaccination hubs may change or be added to from time to time as the rollout plan gathers speed and the rollout continues onto further phases.

Our Panelbeater updates skills

Industry Advice from an Car Accident Repair Specialist

What an awesome effort by our most experienced panel beater on his going back to class after so many years to update his skills so that all the newer techniques for today’s cars are complied with.

Vehicle accidents are an unfortunate part of our lives. However, if the repair and re nishing are carried out to meet the manufacturer’s standard, then your vehicle’s safety, warranty, appearance, and value will be maintained.

Not only did he complete the course, but he passed with high marks.

In the world of automotive repair and restoration, the terms “repair” and “restoration” can mean two very different things. After a collision, most people only address obvious visual damage – a dented fender, broken headlight or buckled hood. While these things are important, the areas of damage that remain unseen – even by an insurance adjuster – can be a tremendous threat to driver safety. In even a moderate collision, serious engine, suspension and frame damage can occur. Without specialized equipment and training, it is nearly impossible to restore a frame-damaged vehicle to pre-accident condition.

Keeping you and your family safe is our number one priority. To do this we are investing in our teams education on the latest in repair methods on new vehicles being released.

With the right tools and the right training; your trained collision specialist can not only return your vehicle to the way it is supposed to look, but return proper road performance, maintain sound structural integrity, and ensure driver safety as well. We at Maleny Accident Repair Centre use all the latest techniques to get your vehicle back on the road.

We are linked with all insurance companies and happy to go that extra mile for our customers.

Is your vehicle repaired correctly or simply to a price?

Tell them you want your local to repair your car. We give a Lifetime warranty, free detail upon completion and award winning tradesmen working on your car.

How sad that this happens time and time again. Vehicles being placed back on our roads that have been repaired incorrectly putting you and your family in harms way. Best products and award winning tradesmen = a beautiful nish. We work for you NOT the insurance company. INSIST on your local to look after you!

Bribie Island - WW11 …defending Australia Whilst work on Fort Bribie actually started in 1939 it was not carried out as a priority. Fort Bribie was established as a defence for Brisbane and Moreton Bay. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbour on December 7th 1941 by the Japanese Imperial Navy and Air Force grave concern was held for coastal Australia that similar events would happen on Australian soil work really became more urgent. In fact a number of Australian locations were attacked by the Japanese, those included Broome, Wyndham, Darwin, Townsville and more importantly Sydney Harbour along with a number of Australian o! shore islands.

Right from the outbreak of war in 1939 a military presence was established on Bribie Island. Prior to that the main defence of Moreton Bay was directed from Fort Lytton.

Early in WW11 it was realised that the coastal areas of Australia were under defended and as a result some preliminary defence precautions were undertaken, even if not too seriously. One such installation commenced in leisure was Fort Bribie on the ocean side of Bribie Island.

During WW! the Royal Navy began experimenting with an electrical lloop system that could detect ships and submarines when they passed over cables laid on the oor of the ocean.

It was during WW11 that this system became extensively used by the British and the British Dominions as a harbour defence measure.

Such an establishment was destine for Bribie Island when the RAN Naval Loop Station No 4 was set up. Cables were laid from Bribie Island to the tip of Moreton Island and they were to protect Moreton Bay and the Brisbane River from attack by enemy ships or submarines.

Maleny’s Sallaway Brothers assist with Fort Bribie construction The Sallaway Brothers from Maleny played an integral part of the setup of Fort Bribie.

In association with Col Barnett, Jack and Reg Sallaway and Malcolm McKinnon transported the two 6” naval guns to Blacks Beach, now Golden Beach from Fort Lytton in Brisbane from where they were transported by barge to Fort Bribie.

Malcolm McKinnon drove the truck from Fort Lytton. The gun barrels were way too long for the truck, and apparently made the steering very light on the trips up from Lytton, -- and it had to be reversed onto the barge for the barrel/s to poke through the barge’s cabin. The truck had no windscreen, no roof, no mudguards and a wooden seat.

The photo above shows the old “picnic-shelter shed” in the background at Tripcony Park, adjacent to Bulcock Beach, Caloundra, where the guns and associated equipment were loaded onto the at -bottom barge -- it may well have been the old barge called “Waterhen.”

The guns had originally come from the WW1 light cruiser, HMAS Sydney and had been used at Fort Lytton. They were 6" breech loading Mark XI guns. Similar guns were mounted in numerous land bases throughout Australia.

The system worked by activating a magnetic and electrical system thus sending a signal to a control room on Bribie Island when a ship or submarine passed over it. Checks were made of the ship or submarine physically or by a message system which was checked against a list of expected vessels. If the vessel was not friendly magnetic mines which had previously been anchored to the seabed were manually detonated from a control room in Caloundra.

Fort Bribie was also the site of two 6" naval guns. These guns had formerly been used on HMAS Sydney during WW1 and had then been transferred to Fort Lytton. (Photo above shows footing of No 2 gun)

Note that the front was open allowing a wide angle for maximum ring angle, there were removable steel doors attached for protection.

Each gun barrel was meters long and weighed 10 tonnes. Each shot weighed about 100 pounds and took 66 pounds of TNT to re it over a range of about 8 miles and shots could be heard as far away as Landsborough. The gun emplacements, 15 m square concrete were fully in use by April 1942.

Bribie Island - WW11 …defending Australia

Continued from Previous Page

Fort Bribie gets a hospital Fort Bribie duty was a hard life Fort Bribie was manned by a number of Units, however the main body of soldiers were from the AIF Coastal Defence Unit.

Initially the conditions were fairly primitive however Japanese interest in Moreton Bay caused major renovations and upgrades to be made making this installation the main defence establishment for the defence of Brisbane.

Some Military historians believe that this establishment became so important because it was to be the point from which the Australian Government had decided to abandon the northern part of Australia to the enemy should they attack from the north. Even the beaches at Bondi had barbed wire entanglements to slow the Japanese soldiers should they land.

This plan, known as the Brisbane Line was o cially denied by the government of the day but the rumour was widely believed because the US General McArthur once referred to it. It was believed that Australia could only defend the south eastern part of Australia basically in a circle from Brisbane around to Adelaide in South

Sinking of the Centaur The Centaur, 2/3rd Australian Hospital Ship, was a motor passenger ship converted in early 1943 for use as a hospital ship. In November 1941 it had rescued survivors of the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran after it had sunk and been sunk by HMAS Sydney.

On 12 May 1943 the clearly marked and lighted Hospital Ship, Centaur sailed unescorted from Sydney at 0945 hours carrying her crew and normal sta , as well as stores and equipment of the 2/12th Field Ambulance but no patients. It was sunk without warning by a torpedo from the Japanese submarine 1-177 under the command of Lt Commander Nakagawa on the 14th May 1943 but that is a story for another time! The buildings that form part of the WW11 Fort Bribie Establishment have been entered into the Queensland Heritage Register and are now managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

Fort Bribie was one of the primary defences for Brisbane during World War 2. As the threat from the Japanese began to grow the Department of Defence saw the need to establish a hospital at Fort Bribie. Soldiers remembered a 24bed underground hospital which was called a C.C.S.- Casualty Clearing Station. 24-bed underground E-shaped Hospital with two entrances”. The building dug into a sand hill with a sandbag wall hiding the entrance. It is believed that this hospital was built underground to protect it from shelling of the enemy. The roof was constructed from ti-trees cut on site then a layer of sand placed over the top. The purpose of an underground hospital was for Emergency use only, in case of enemy invasion. Normally any sick personnel was always sent to the hospital in nearby Caloundra. Records show the rst Doctor was posted to Fort Bribie In July 1943. It is unknown if this building was in fact ever used as a hospital. Possibly this was because of the war in New Guinea stopping the Japanese troops from actually coming further south thus the need for the hospital subsided. It is believed that this construction was subsequently used as a storage unit until a re that was lit to clear away undergrowth got away and destroyed it!

Military Jetty at Golden Beach One of the iconic landmarks at Golden Beach today is the Military Jetty. It is one of the popular shing spots for many families.

It was originally built during WW11 as a mainland supply point for Fort Bribie.

We now wish to advise that the amalgamation of the MCU and Queensland Country banking systems will be delayed until the weekend of 19 to 21 March 2021. The of cial transfer date of MCU's banking business to Queensland Country will remain 1 March 2021. Maleny Cultural & Historical Society Inc.

Vision is to “To Save and Display Maleny's History”

Maleny Historical Society - “Elephants in Maleny” Australia had a proud tradition of circus culture stretching back to the early 19th century. Names such as Ashtons Wirth Brothers - Perry Brothers Sole Brothers and Bullens travelled the length and breath of Australia bringing acts such as equestrianism, acrobats, performing wild animals, such as elephants, lions and tigers. and clowning to regional Australians.

Peg Burnett told the tale that she remembers her sister, Mary McLean, being mauled about the head by a circus lion, when it was tied up on the stage of the School of Arts Hall, and local vet and butcher, Jack Grigor (Landsborough Shire Council Councillor) came to her rescue.

In the early 1900s, when travelling shows came to town they had their own train carriages and employed specialist tent peggers and animal trainers, this is circus on a shoestring. It was a great highlight for the people of small townships when the circus came to town. Everyone would come out to see the arrival of the vehicles carrying everything from the “big-top” to the animals. Researcher Amanda Wilson recorded in her Chronological List of Historical Events for Maleny that a circus did indeed visit Maleny in 1921.

She was not seriously hurt. In this photo, the Maleny Hotel is beyond the elephants and circus tents. The hill at the back is where Cloudwalk is today. Note Lawley House on the horizon, that was shifted to the Pioneer Village in 2008. Photo: Elephants in Dunlop’s paddock, now the Maleny Primary School oval, 1921.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts As more of us are reaching retirement age we are forced to consider just how we will continue to pay for our lifestyle. Whilst most of us have worked diligently for periods of about 50 years there is no certainty of reasonable continuing nances. Wouldn’t it be nice to keep getting paid for a job long after you chuck it in or get red? Such is one of the many perks afforded to a former Prime Minister. Not only will they get very large guaranteed pensions they also have a seemingly endless and expensive range of perks, none of which are available to the average Aussie. This generally means they can claim for domestic travel (as long as it’s a regular scheduled service), car costs, of ce facilities, of ce admin, telecommunications, publications and newspaper subscriptions plus family travel. And that lasts until they die. Sure the duties of a Prime Minister whilst in of ce is stressful and duties are long and tiring. They do forfeit much time with families. However, they are well paid whilst in of ce and they seek this prestigious of ce of their own free will. Many other Aussies also work in stressful jobs and also forfeit special times with their families in their doing their jobs. Several former prime ministers have also used their status as a former PM to land high- ying jobs after their time in public of ce has ended whilst continuing to receive their large pensions and use their expensive perks. Many of the perks in respect to travel also goes to spouses which includes defect partners. With the Australian Budget being in so far in the red perhaps now is the time for perks, except for a reasonable pension for ex Prime Ministers to be ceased. It should be remembered that “governments” do not have money of their own - only money that has been take from the taxpayer. The less money spent at “the trough” means a bit more is left for the average Aussie taxpayer.

And he swears that it 100% true. No Bulls##t” Truthful Jones Tells us that he remembers one night at the Maleny Hotel when he was having a quiet snort when he noticed this bloke at the other end of the bar, just looking at his drink. He stays like that for half of an hour.

Then, this big trouble-making truck driver steps next to him, takes the drink from the old mate, and just drinks it all down. The poor man starts crying. The truck driver says, "Come on man, I was just joking. Here, I'll buy you another drink. I just can't stand to see a man cry." "No, it's not that. This day is the worst of my life. First, I fall asleep, and I go late to my of ce. My boss, outrageous, res me. When I leave the building, to my car, I found out it was stolen. The police said that they can do nothing. I get a cab to return home, and when I leave it, I remember I left my wallet and credit cards there. The cab driver just drives away." "I go home, and when I get there, I nd my wife in bed with the gardener. I leave home, and come to this bar. And just when I was thinking about putting an end to my life, you show up and drink my poison. Just shows - sometimes it pays not to play jokes on people you don’t know too well! Maleny Community Groups & When they meet!

Community Groups that form the back bone of the Maleny Community

Did you know that Maleny did have a Funeral Parlour Those who walk up and down Maple Street, Maleny can see this shed at the rear of Maple Street businesses. How many know of the past use of the shed?

Maleny Players present Shakespeare

Maleny Players announce their rst production for 2021; ‘Shakespeare: the guided tour’. The show features some excerpts from ten of Shakespeare’s plays which will be linked by a narration The show is directed by Andrew Wallace, local Federal M.P. Undoubtedly this show will remind you about those parts of Shakespeare that you either loved or hated.

It was straight from the mouth of a person who should know, thanks to Harvey (Red) Bryce who states that it was the town's rst funeral parlour.

Excerpts from plays which include Henry IV; Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’ Dream, Anthony and Cleopatra to name but a few are included.

The shed is presently situated behind the building that previously contained Maleny Travel. It was part of a large parcel of land once owned by Harry Lyons family. On Maple Street Harry Lyons had a mechanical business and a car rental business. The funeral parlour was also run by the Lyons' family and was situated behind the mechanical service. Perhaps someone out there has some photos of it and can tell us more about this part of Maleny's history.

Well known Sunshine Coast musician Kim Kirkman will perform authentic music of the period. The show is on the 12th 13th and 14th of March at the Maleny Playhouse. Tickets are $20 adults and $15 for under 18 years and are available at http://www.malenyplayers.org.

The River School Year 6 Shines a Light The Rotary Club of Maleny are very happy to report that the Year 6 River School class excelled themselves in their behaviour and enthusiastic participation in the Solar Light project on Sunday. Rotary’s Chris Brooker, project coordinator and Rotary President Greg Williams were very satis ed with the end result. Lots of lessons were learnt by everyone - and not just about solar light kits and the need for them in energy-poor countries. The importance of reading and following instructions, that it’s ok to ask for help, that perseverance wins out in the end (the screws were very tiny and it took a bit of dexterity to get them in right!). Many thanks to Trudi and the parents who attended. Seven Rotarians participated and all enjoyed communicating with the young people and seeing how happy they were to be involved in the project – and so proud particularly when they nished their rst kit. River School Principal Ann Donoghoe wrote to the club saying “Thank you so much for this wonderful feedback. The students returned to school very happy with the experience and enjoyed the company of members and the opportunity to work side-by-side doing something that will make a difference to those less fortunate.” Photo Above: Rotary President Greg Williams learning with the kids and parents

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Another Australian Combined Probus Club of Maleny As 2020 came to an end and Covid restrictions eased, the Icon hits the dust Club was able to squeeze one meeting in on November 25th. At that last meeting for 2020, the time was utilised to introduce the new management committee, who were elected by an online electronic vote, as the of cial AGM in March was cancelled due to the Covid restrictions at the time. Past President Stan McCallum of cially handed over the Chain of Of ce to the new President Barbara Hays.

As per the photo, the new Management Committee is: Front Row L to R: Cynthia Daniels (Secretary), Alison Frew (Vice President), Barbara Hays (President), Susan Myring (Treasurer), committee members: John Gyzemyter, Anne Siemon, Stan McCallum. Back row: John Dalziel, Anne Boyle, Di Begnie, Susan Dalziel.

As a youngster growing up in the Lockyer Valley in the early 1960’s Weis Fruito Bars were a local delicacy that was regularly sought. The Weis bar goes back to 1936, when Toowoomba corner-store owner Cyril Weis created a slab of ice cream known as the Fruito Bar. The Fruito Bar gained a reputation and was renowned in the Darling Downs, but wartime rations came into effect in 1942 and cream, fruit and sugar purchases were restricted.

We also took the opportunity to formally induct and introduce 7 new members who had been accepted earlier but were unable to come to meetings because of the suspension. As there was some spare time several members spoke about their individual experiences about how they coped with the Covid restriction. One member spoke about taking the motor home to Beerwah for shopping and how he sanitised before leaving the motor home, sanitised upon entering the store, sanitised upon leaving the store and nally sanitised upon re-entering the motor home. He was extremely well sanitised. When the meeting concluded the members all adjourned for a wonderful Christmas Morning Tea provided by the ladies from the CWA. The President took the opportunity to thank the CWA ladies for the wonderful morning teas in the past and look forward to the delicious spreads in this new year. Our meetings will resume on 24th February. If you think you may be interested in joining Probus, you are most welcome to come along as a visitor and check us out. Please contact our Membership Of cer, Di Begbie on 0437 514340 for all the details.

Weise Bars were made in Toowoomba and rstly distributed locally. Weis Fruito Bars were announced as one of the 150 cultural icons announced in Queensland's Q150 celebrations. Until August 2017, Weis was a privately owned Australian family company. The company was owned and operated by a second generation of the Weis family until they sold it to the Anglo-Dutch rm, Unilever. Unilever has now closed the original Weis plant in Toowoomba, making redundant all 93 workers, and move all manufacturing to its Minto Plant in western Sydney. This change was despite the foreign conglomerate telling the original owners that manufacturing would stay in Toowoomba. Another Australian Icon being devoured by an international company and being blindsided and deceived - no conscience!
