Maleny Rangers Football Club

Not even the recent period wet weather could put a dampener on the Maleny Rangers FC this season!

A whopping $350,000 for clubhouse and change room improvements has been obtained and we can now only wait to see what the new facilities look like and contains.

Another great facility for the Maleny community.

Why your weekly wage isn’t going as far as it used to.

The December Quarter Consumer Price Index reveals Queenslanders continue to suffer the biggest cost-of-living increases across the critical categories for households in Australia.

✦ Power prices are up 19.9% – the worst in the nation and triple the national average while one of our largest power plants remains offline after three years;

✦ Insurance costs are up 18.5% - due to the crime crisis and a lack of flood resilience;

✦ Water costs up 16.1% the worst in the nation off the back of State Government bulk water cost increases failing to build new dams and now tearing down the Paradise Dam;

✦ Groceries up 4.3%; and

✦ Transport costs up 4.2% with poor maintenance on our roads

So if you are wondering just where your money is going then just contemplate the figures above.

POLITICAL COMMENT MADE BY

The Queensland Premier Mr Steven Miles deflected criticism of mammorth pay benefits to flow to CFMEU members by saying

“Female-dominated industries were also the winners because of the hospitals and schools being built, and because BPIC sites have female toilets.

“DELAY 3G SHUTDOWN” AFTER INQUIRY ESTABLISHED

The Senate has voted in favour of a One Nation motion establishing an inquiry into the looming 3G mobile network shutdown. One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts said telecommunications companies must delay the 3G shutdown until the inquiry concludes: ‘Australians across the country are still relying on the 3G network in life-or-death situations and it is too early to have this essential service turned off.

Senator Roberts is calling on Telstra, Optus and TPG to stop their 3G shutdown until this inquiry hands down its findings at the earliest. ‘Vital

‘This inquiry will allow the Senate to fully investigate the consequences of shutting down the 3G network before Australians are ready.

‘Revelations like the fact that 740,000 4G mobile phones will be unable to call Triple Zero after the shutdown prove Australia is not ready and the consequences are not fully understood.

Looking for a durable counter top for home Liquid Glass is what you need!

Another example of a product that is proudly Australian family owned and made comes from the Norglass range of products.

This is Liquid Glass. It is a water clear pour-on glass finish for bars, table tops and decoupage applications. Gives that ‘liquid glass look’. It has excellent adhesion, it is also abrasion resistance and flexibility.

It is commonly used by local woodcrafters to fill holes in timber, but can also be used in concrete or for decoupage applications.

This table in the photo was was treated using Liquid Glass to fill in the imperfections in the wood and then coated in Northane for a fantastic finish by HSC student Cooper Vallance who was completing a woodwork art and design project.

It is becoming more popular for use in making jewellery. You can preserve pressed, dried or fresh flowers by adding several coats of liquid glass to them. You can then create jewellery from these preserved pieces or add them to scrapbooks or keepsakes.

Another use is to coat pressed flower art work after it is complete.

Specialised colourants can be added to Liquid Glass to enhance your design. Colourant comes in five main colours, Red, Black, Blue, Green, Yellow and can be mixed to create your own colour. Check out the instructional video at https://youtu.be/H6_pg6zsOv4

Maleny SES looking for volunteers

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

Police help with keeping neighbours safe

In Australia on the last Sunday in March celebrates Neighbours Day. As the Australian population continues to grow older and with many of those not having relatives living in close proximity is has been a day when neighbours can check out the long termed wellbeing of their neighbours. Many elderly neighbours now have to live alone thus creating a feeling of loneliness. Queensland police have fostered this program to help create a safer neighbourhood, especially at this time when suburban crime appears to be rising and causing concern for the elderly. The Neighbours Every Day campaign provides simple, practical tools to create and share belonging, each and every day of the year.

Sunday, March 31 was Australian Neighbour Day 2024. This campaign was launched in 2003 as an opportunity to ‘check on your neighbour’, as it was established that not many people know their neighbours anymore and to assist in combating loneliness.

Perhaps we could .make one day of the week, every week a neighbours safe day to create an environment where all neighbours feel safe.

Individuals, community organisations and local Councils can foster belonging among their networks by promoting the Neighbours Every Day resources and creating inclusive, welcoming spaces and events for people to connect.

Secure your vehicle number plates

Police from around the The Sunshine Coast continue to receive complaints of number plate thefts and this is expected to continue whilst people find the economy tight. .

Number plate theft is of great concern to police, as they are being used by people to commit more serious crimes such as robbery, break and enter and stealing offences.

What many people do not realise is that offenders use stolen number plates in an attempt to make their identification more difficult.

Local police would like all motorists to look at ways of preventing the theft of number plates from their vehicles.

One-way screws are available free of charge from most Police Stations or can also be purchased from auto retailers.

The removal tools for these screws are restricted for sale and are normally available at local police stations for use.

Would you leave your credit card around complete with security number? Why give your vehicle identification to a criminal? It is important for motorists to help reduce crime by securing your vehicle number plates with screws that cannot be removed with conventional tools.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

“One

night of possible sex extensively damages Australia”

After nearly five years the soap opera “Higgins - Lehrmann” continues to be played out like a never ending soap opera. Following the 2019 incident the average Aussie still does not know the full facts, although those facts have effected those same Aussies in many direct and indirect ways.

Conspiracy theorists believe that is was a major incident meant to disrupt the then upcoming federal election whilst feminists believed that it was just another ungrateful male dominating an innocent young female. Others believed that it was pre-planned to create an incident to bring a large personal wealth to a couple of people.

Unfortunately everyone, including you and me are paying a high price, irrespective of just how this incident unfurled.

Unfortunately, irrespective of the actual cause of the event it has ensnared a large range of public figures from the very heart of the Australian Federal Government. It brought a large amount of public distrust on those who work in the federal government. It also brings into question the backgrounds and motives of those federal government employees who have access to the countries most secret documents and the ability of unfriendly countries to exploit those backgrounds through blackmail and corruption.. It also brings into question the security of the federal house of parliament and the efficient operation of that place. The only people who have actually benefited are the solicitors and barristers.

The Australian media have done themselves no favours as they display their willingness to exploit the situation for their own profit. The media is the body that really prosecuted this matter rather than the responsible bodythe department of justice and the courts ion this land.

Truthful Jones says

And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”

Truthful said that: “The other day I was sitting on a park bench next to a homeless man. I started a conversation by asking him how he ended up this way.”

He said, "Up until last week, I had it all. I had plenty to eat, my clothes were washed and pressed, I had a roof over my head, I had TV and Internet, and I went to the gym, the pool, and the library. I was working on my MBA on-line. I had no bills and no debt. I even had full medical coverage. I was living the dream" he sighed heavily. "It slips away so quickly"

I felt sorry for him, so I asked, "What happened, Drugs, Alcohol, Divorce, Market crash, Death in the family?"

"Oh no, nothing like that," he said. “I got out of prison."

Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

For most of the younger generation when they are about to leave home and start their own independent lives, the significance of the Bank of Mum and Dad in Australia's Financial Landscape is underestimated. Without it many people starting out “on their own” would not be able to get any reasonable start in life.

Historically, Australia has had a high rate of owneroccupancy, with about 71% of households owning the homes they lived in. However, since the early 2000s, this rate has declined considerably.

It is predicted that in 2024 we will continue to see moderate growth in house and unit prices despite high interest rates and diminished borrowing capacities. This is not good news for our Generation Z members who are about to embark on their own life of independence.

The Australian Dream or Great Australian Dream is, in its narrowest sense, a belief that in Australia, home ownership can lead to a better life and is an expression of success and security and has always been seen as a personal right.

Over the past decade or so this dream has become somewhat more of a nightmare as housing costs continue to rise substantially. Partly this has been caused by the fact the supply of places to live in has not kept pace with the demand for places to live in. It is the old story of “supply and demand”..

In Australia because of this soaring costs of housing and education which mostly outpaces wage growth, the term "Bank of Mum and Dad" has become increasingly prevalent. This informal financial institution, comprised of parents financially assisting their adult children, plays a pivotal role in navigating the challenges of economic independence.

As housing affordability dwindles and student debt accumulates, the Bank of Mum and Dad emerges as a lifeline for many young Australians, shaping not

only individual financial trajectories but also the broader economic landscape.

Australia's housing market has long been characterised by inflated prices, particularly in major cities like Sydney and Melbourne. This trend is making homeownership a distant dream for many young Australians, necessitating alternative means of acquiring property.

Here, the Bank of Mum and Dad steps in offering financial support in the form of down payments, cosigning mortgages, or even purchasing properties outright for their children. Without this assistance, many young adults would struggle to break into the housing market, perpetuating a cycle of rental dependency and exacerbating wealth inequality. Moreover, the Bank of Mum and Dad plays a crucial role in funding higher education. As tuition fees continue to rise, coupled with the escalating costs of living for students, many young Australians find themselves burdened with substantial student debt upon graduation. In response, parents often dip into their savings or even take out loans themselves to cover their children's educational expenses. By shouldering this financial burden, the Bank of Mum and Dad facilitates access to higher education, thereby enhancing career prospects and economic mobility for young Australians.

Beyond individual households, the Bank of Mum and Dad has broader implications for the Australian

economy. By injecting funds into the housing market, parents contribute to its stability and growth. However, this reliance on familial assistance perpetuates disparities in wealth and homeownership, exacerbating socioeconomic inequalities. Moreover, as parents redirect their savings towards supporting their children, they may sacrifice their own financial security, particularly in retirement. This phenomenon underscores the need for comprehensive policies addressing housing affordability and education costs to alleviate the strain on familial finances and promote intergenerational equity.

In recent years, policymakers and economists have increasingly recognised the significance of the Bank of Mum and Dad in Australia's financial landscape. Efforts to address housing affordability have included measures such as first-home buyer grants and incentives for downsizing, aimed at easing the burden on young adults seeking to enter the property market. Similarly, debates surrounding tertiary education funding have prompted calls for increased government support and reforms to student loan schemes, alleviating the pressure on families to finance their children's education.

However, addressing the underlying structural challenges requires a multifaceted approach. Initiatives to boost affordable housing supply, enhance rental protections, and reform tax policies are essential for fostering a more equitable housing market. Likewise, investments in

education and skills training can reduce reliance on family support by equipping young Australians with the tools to pursue meaningful employment opportunities.

In conclusion, the Bank of Mum and Dad plays a crucial role in Australia's financial landscape, offering vital support to young adults grappling with housing affordability and education costs.

While providing immediate relief, this informal institution also highlights systemic inequalities and underscores the need for comprehensive policy reforms. By addressing the root causes of economic insecurity, Australia can foster a more inclusive and prosperous society for future generations.

Unfortunately, many families now have no financial ability to assist their family members. This is leading to a generation of people without the financial means to provide for themselves.

Over the coming generation we will see larger numbers of people, not only the younger generation, but older aged people living in conditions such as in cars or in tents just to have a place to sleep.

If you want to live in a country that builds things you have to buy things that your country builds!

Whilst it might be good for people who got into the property market early in life and who are now benefiting from that property value surge it is essential to strike a balance that ensures sustainable growth without leaving behind those seeking a place to call home.

There is no easy solution to this problem, but it is a problem that we as a society must find a solution.

COMPANY DIRECTORS BEWARE !

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

The days when Company Directors could plead ignorance of their Company’s affairs are long gone with the courts showing very little sympathy for Director who use ignorance as a defence. No longer can a Director argue that the appointment was a token appointment or one that he or she was pressured into accepting.

Directors are expected to:

• Be proactive and actively participate in the management of the Company. Total nonparticipation is impermissible;

• Understand the role that a Director performs;

• Ensure that the solvency of the Company can be monitored on a continuing basis.

Directors in particular have an obligation to prevent their Company from incurring debts that the Company cannot pay for. A Director is also expected to be able to judge the fine line between solvency and insolvency and be ready to act to prevent the Company engaging in insolvent trading. However to be able to identify the fine line

between solvent and insolvent trading is not an easy one.

It is the Company’s cash-flow which is of crucial importance and this is where the line between solvent and insolvent trading can be found. A Company is only solvent if it is able to pay all of its debts "as and when they fall due” – not just some of its debts. A Company that has a surplus of assets over liabilities can still be technically insolvent because of the lack of cash flow to cover its debts.

If it is alleged that a Director has contravened the Corporations Act in relation to insolvent trading the Director must be able to prove one of the following as defence:

• when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to expect that the Company was solvent and would remain solvent even if the debt was incurred; or

• when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to believe (and actually believed) that a subordinate in the Company was competent enough to provide the correct

information about the Company’s solvency status and that the Director relied upon this information; or

• that when the debt was incurred the Director, because of illness or some other good reason, was unable to take part in the management of the company at that time; or

• that the Director took all reasonable steps to stop the Company from incurring the debt.

It is clear that although Directors may delegate certain responsibilities to other subordinates in the Company, they are still obliged to have an active role in the management of the affairs of the Company. To fail in this obligation to properly discharge the duties of the office of a Director could lead to personal exposure to liability and in many cases significant sums of money.

What if I don’t put solar on?

Electricity bills now account for a large portion of a families budget. There is a way to help mitigate that account. Install solar. For those who don’t installIf solar on their family home then they are effectively paying for their neighbours' solar system through higher power bills. As more and more people install solar, the houses left without

solar end up paying more for their electricity, so that the energy companies can continue to make their usual profit amount.

Did you know that about 50%. Of homes in the Maleny - Conondale area have solar panels installed.

Home battery sales are rising with volatile power prices

“Back in Northern Territory” ….. continuing on with my mission!

I’m “Back on the road again”

First Day back on the road, had a short one just to ease myself and Slim back into it. I stopped in at the Adelaide River Railway Heritage Precinct to check out some of the region’s awesome railroad history and to drop in and see the passionate and a bit eccentric caretaker who was an absolute wealth of knowledge on everything from the overland Telegraph to WW2.

The Adelaide River Railway Heritage precinct displays much of the original equipment from the rail line originally built in the 1880's to service the Pine Creek goldfields

Great to see some of this nations Railway history preserved and not sent to scrap that’s for sure!!

Camped up at the Adelaide River Inn Tourist Park tonight next to the .303 Bar, Adelaide River, NT rattling the tins and having a few yarns with the locals.

Whilst in Alice Springs I was honoured to be able to visit the Transport Museum in Alice Springs. They had on display one of the very rare Lord Vesties cattle carting trucks from way back in the day Another
