Maple Street roundabout receives a facelift

A beauti cation of the roundabout in Maple Street Maleny has now taken place to provide a more appealing approach into Maleny’s main street. I am sure most of Maleny and the Street Gardeners’ Alliance have already seen the work that has taken place on the roundabout this week by the Council Parks Team Gardeners. The garden has now been mulched nalising the work in time for the Christmas tourist season.

Heritage Calendar 2022 has been launched Fun times in a Mini Moke, caravanning on the Mooloolaba foreshore and relaxing shing on the river, these are some of the images celebrated in the 2022 Cultural Heritage Calendar, The Great Outdoors: Celebrating fun days of sun and adventure. It’s jam-packed with a stunning collection of photos that have been drawn from the private collections of six local residents who were winners of the heritage calendar photo competition and council’s own Picture Sunshine Coast collection. Congratulations to the competition winners – Landsborough and District Historical Museum, Linda Fawkes, Debbie Southern, Yvonne Smith, Judith Irvine and Leonie Neil.

“No Longer an Eel!!!”

Maleny Showgirl visits Parliament

What a win for our region! Go the Dolphins NRL! This will be 17th NRL team! Congratulations and thanks to Chairman Bob Jones, General Manager Terry Reader, Mayor Peter Flannery and the crew at Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Meet Chloe Lanham. Chloe took out Miss Showgirl at the Maleny Show Society this year, then went to win the 2021 Near North Coast Sub Chamber Finals.

I’ve supported the Parramatta Eels all my life. But no longer. I’ll be signing up with the Dolphins. A truly wonderful outcome for grassroots community sport across our region!

That means Chloe is competing in the Queensland Country Life Showgirl Awards and as part of that took in a visit to Queensland Parliament on October 21st.

Conondale State School Public Speaking I recently spent a most enjoyable Friday afternoon at Conondale State School. The Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club were awarding the winners of their “Convince Us!” public speaking competition. Congratulations to Johnny, Lily and Aidan In turn, Principal Mr Willis thanked the Lions for their incredible generosity and donation that allowed the school to install smart screens in each teaching space. What a partnership! Photo: Andrew Powell with the winners, Mr Willis and Di Hobson from Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets? We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under ve dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Everything Old is now new again! The International Motor Show was rst held in 1903 and was organised by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. In 1927 at the Olympia Exhibition Centre in West Kensington, London the International Motor Show was held over 9 days and about 300,000 people attended. At that time there was estimated to be about 28 million vehicles on roads worldwide.

One of the popular exhibits at the time was a then modern recreational vehicle, known as “'Street Yacht’” as depicted in the attached photo. It was described at the time as a Teardrop RV camper camping glamping motorhome bus. It was just one of 800 vehicles on view that year. Twinnies need your help! URGENT HELP – DONATIONS NEEDED Paula and Bridgette Powers have been rescuing and treating Pelicans and sea birds on the Sunshine Coast for more than 16 Years! “We need your urgent help. A terrible storm has come in and destroyed a lot of our critical shelters for our pelicans. There is signi cant water damage to our key ICU areas. We need to build another place for our precious birds and pelicans. So many things have gotten washed away. It is too sad for words. We’ve spent the night, into the wee hours of the morning doing the best we can but there is a lot of damage and to top it off, our roof is destroyed.

The damage is too terrible for words and we are frightened and scared as to what the future holds if we cannot immediately start the repairs. Luckily, we were not hurt physically but our rescue will be severely impacted until we cannot repair.

Just $5 from each and every one of you would get us to our goal and help us so much. Please please help us get to our target by paying forward your coffee in the morning.

We’ve put our entire life into this rescue and this storm has really hit us hard. We are stressed and worried. We need to be here for the pelicans and birds that come our way but need safe and secure shelter. It is just a necessity, especially for those that are injured or sick.

we get through this.”

Please give so we can help rebuild. Only with your help can

We really need to start xing the damage immediately and will do whatever we can to shelter our pelicans and birds in the meantime. We estimate that we will need at least $30,000.

This is a simple thing we can all do to assist with this urgent need. The Twinnies would be delighted for any help you can give! You know that you want to help the Pelicans - now is the time of need - please do what you can!

Truthful Jones says

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions In the Queensland Coroners Court in October 2021 the Coroner Ms Bentley found that the death of an 18 year old teenager, killed in a highspeed police chase on the Gold Coast, could have been prevented had police complied with their own pursuit policies. Following a week-long inquest held in Southport earlier this year examined the police response to the incident. She recommended changes to pursuit training for all QPS of cers. She also recommended regular "practical scenario-based pursuit refresher training" for all of cers, and the branding of the bonnets of police vehicles. Let us get a few things straight. The deceased person broke into a house with two others on the Gold Coast earlier on the morning he was tragically killed whilst a 16-year-old girl was alone in the house. She was able to run out of the back door and phone police about the break in. The deceased was driving a stolen vehicle at the time of this offence. He was subsequently located driving that vehicle by police and and directed to stop, however the deceased person made a conscious decision not to stop and attempt to evade police. In doing so the offender placed not only himself at risk, but thee police who were to deal with this matter as well as other motorist who were going about their lawful way on Queensland roads. What adverse comments were made about the criminal activities of the now deceased driver and his criminal behaviour? None. Whilst it is a real tragedy that a person was killed in this incident, it would have been much worse had it been an innocent party. Once it is widely known by people acting with criminal intent that police are forbidden to take steps to apprehend them in fresh pursuit then they are never going to comply with police directions to stop and “hand themselves in” for of their criminal behaviour How about making a nding that ensures that all criminals stop and desist when called upon lawfully by the police!

Maleny RFB + SES about to get new home

Local SES + RFB volunteer Mr Jared Ashcroft reports that the new purpose built HQ for the combined Maleny Emergency Services at the intersection of Macadamia Drive and Dixon Avenue, Maleny is almost completed and is expected to be ready to move into by early November. The of cial opening is set for December 9th.

The new $5 million multipurpose emergency services facility at Maleny which includes a new purpose-built depot, of ces and training facilities replaces the present location that the services share with the Maleny Show Society in the show-grounds and the obvious uncertainty that this causes during events held within the grounds.

Don’t get caught!

Starting November 1st motorists now face penalties of $1033 for driving while using their phone and $413 for not wearing a seatbelt, with Road and Transport Minister Mark Bailey declaring there will be “absolutely no mercy”. DETAILS: https://bit.ly/3CBeD3M

Over the past couple of weeks the Sunshine Coast area has seen a number of storms pass by. Thankfully no damage was reported in the Maleny ares, however we had a couple of busy nights assisting our colleagues at Nambour and District State Emergency Service when they received a large number of calls for assistance. Maleny Crews were activated to assist. The storm season has now started, a little earlier this year. Maleny SES is looking for some extra volunteers to assist our community during times of disaster. If you think that you can t the boots, pictured at right then contact Maleny SES via their Facebook Page at: https://www.facebook.com/MalenySES We advise you to Keep an eye on the Bureau of Meteorology, as we're expecting potentially nasty weather with large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall in parts of the state. Maleny Cultural & Historical Society Inc.

Vision is to “To Save and Display Maleny's History”

Remember Cracker Night in Australia!, Also known as Bon re Night or Cracker Night on 5 November, this is an annual English tradition going back over 400 years, and until about 1980 was also celebrated in other British colonies including Australia. For any young child growing up in the suburbs of 1950’s, 1960s & 1970s Australia (late 1960’s & 1970’s for me), Cracker Night was right up there with your birthday. Cracker Night was also sometimes called Bon re Nigh. It was a night of sheer joy for all. In the lead-up to this night the local shops sold a large array of reworks. It was a night of Skyrockets, Bungers, Po-hahs, Thunders, Tom Thumbs, Ball-shooters, Throwdowns, Roman candles, Blazing Parachutes, Catherine wheels and more.

Because of the extensive number of injuries, the frequency of property damage and the general disruption that was experienced on these occasions, the government banned ‘cracker night’ in 1972.

During the 1940’s and 1950’s cracker night was a real big deal, but sadly, Queensland banned unlicensed people buying, selling, using or having reworks in 1972.

Upon the discovery of Fawkes the plot failed. Londoner’s lit bon res around the city to celebrate the fact that their King had survived.

This great night was banned because of the number of people getting injured, often seriously because of the improper handling of reworks. Other reasons were that on that night there was an increase in the number of bush res, especially in years when it was a little drier. Letter boxes were also prime targets with many being blown apart with double bunger reworks. Cracker night was to immortalised Guy Fawkes who on the 5th of November, 1605 was discovered guarding barrels of gunpowder that had been stashed underneath the House of Lords in London in a Catholic plot to very literally blow up the establishment hierarchy — a protest against the policies of King James I.

People began placing ef gies onto bon res which were often made by piling up enormous piles of old trees and bushes into a bon re. Ef gies of Guy Fawkes graced the top of the pyre which is then set alight followed by the lighting of the reworks. Often the night would end with family all settled around the dying embers of the bon re, telling ghost stories, eating damper and spuds cooked in the coals. This annual event was always eagerly awaited. Today reworks are usually only seen at public events such as the local show, school fete, New Year's Eve celebrations and other big events. These displays have become more elaborate over the years. Oh! if we could just return to those simple days of our youth.

Selling or buying a property! Here are a few things to consider during the process With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

Fourteen Day Finance Pre the current frantic market, the standard Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) Contracts which document the bulk of house, townhouse, unit, apartment and rural land and building sales in Queensland had an average nance approval time frame of about fourteen days. However, due to the massive increase in demand currently being placed on real estate agents, nance brokers, banks and other nancial institutions [should I include law rms and government agencies] twentyone days is the minimum and it can take longer to get nance approval. This being the case the ood of Southerners moving north expecting a quick settlement may have unreasonable expectations about how quickly their new property will move through the settlement process, as Queensland always had a reputation for fast thirty-day

And we did, in a normal market. But this is not a normal market cycle and Queensland notwithstanding a highly advanced electronic property titling system, can only work as fast as the people within it.

Better to ask up front now than try to negotiate and extension under the contract and have it fall over after you have told your family and friends you’re moving to the beautiful Sunshine Coast.

The Pest in Inspections

Thirty Day Settlements a Myth

While I hope by now ,I’m starting to preach to the choir, while we are delighted to have you join us here in the best state in Australia, not that we don’t all love a trip to the south for skiing, shopping, eating and well, all the other great stuff you have on offer… we just prefer to live here in Queensland (I’ll spare you the slogan).

Once upon a time (pre COVID) in Queensland the wonderful magical land settlement on a contract only took 30 days even if subject to nance. However, now post COVID, mid property boom, mid overloaded nance infrastructure and inspection systems the reality is closer to forty- ve days for settlement.

So, another hurdle you will need to climb over to come join us here in the beautiful north will be the timing of your inspections.

Snail Mail

While we have a great many well quali ed building and pest inspectors, when sales are happening at the rate they are during a property boom as we are currently experiencing, there are going to be delays.

Now I mentioned above that we are pretty darn tech savvy here in the Sunshine State. So we might like to spend our days sitting under a palm tree sipping a cool one, but we do it with a laptop while designing code!

There are a nite number of quali ed inspectors and at the moment an in nite number of properties to be inspected.

So the bulk of our conveyancing in Queensland is electronic, none of this waddling off to a registry of ce nonsense we just press a button and it’s done.

So like the nance when purchasing in Queensland be mindful that you allow at least 14 days for if possible for property inspections, noting to the purchaser that it is dif cult during this boom to get a booking due

settlements as opposed to the slower Southern states.

It has hardly gone unnoticed there’s a bit of a stampede underway from the more intensely COVID affected southern states to the beautiful and considerably less affected Sunshine State.

Selling or buying a property! Here are a few things to consider during the process With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

(and it is trying) it does from time-to-time lag behind just a bit.

Queensland is this, the quicky settlement days of Queensland are in the past.

One area where it can lag is veri cation of identi cation. There are restraints on verifying identi cation for example, that require law rms to ‘physically’ view or witness certain items. This means we must rely on good old snail mail.

While we are pretty much COVID free we are suffering from a bit of cue of folks wanting to get through the border bubble and into our trouble-free sunshine lled zone. So while we welcome you with open arms, please exercise calm and patience as there are an awful lot of you in the cue and we will serve you as quickly as we can.

If any of you have tried using mail lately, you will know that the term ‘express’ can be a tad exaggerated, further slowing down the process of the contract progressing to completion.

The signs of spring are beginning to happen around us as the days lengthen and the earth begins to warm…

Now is an ideal time to check out our new “Garden Section”

Fruit Trees are now in stock!!

You want to start a family friendly fruit garden. There are many fruit trees that grow well in the Sunshine Coast area. They include Plants include avocados, chillis, citrus (including nger limes), lychees, mangos, mulberries, passionfruit, persimmons, ginger and loquats - plus many more. Unless there is a risk of winter frost damage, the optimal time to plant fruit trees in a summer rainfall climate is in autumn. This takes advantage of the normally good soil moisture from the summer wet season.Take care, however, to monitor soil

moisture closely through the normally hot and dry spring and early summer. Where a site is subject to heavy frosts it is better to plant in spring. It is best to plant the trees on a raised bed or mound. Water logging or “wet feet” is the major cause of root rot and is a serious problem that affects tree growth and survival. Before planting, water the tree well. Do not allow the root ball to dry out after planting. Irrigate or hand water 2-3 times per week for the rst few weeks, particularly where conditions are dry.

Travelling Jackaroo Supporting Mental Health

here’s no denying that Maleny’s Sam Hughe’s is an unusual young man. As many will remember, the 18 year old set from Maleny’s main street on 21st March of this year, with the aim to spend his gap year driving his 1957 Chamberlain tractor (named ‘Slim’) around Australia to raise funds for charity. The two charities dear to his big heart are the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Dolly’s Dream. When he departed, Slim had a tinny on top, towing a purpose built trailer that houses his living quarters, supplies and a Suzuki Sierra run about. On top of it is a wingless and gutted Beechcraft Musketeer plane, providing Sam with yet more living space. Strapped to the container are his motorbike and bicycle. His ‘rig’ carries a portable drive-in movie theatre (so he can set up movies at wherever he is on his tour in exchange for charity donations)

and even a jumping castle and fairy oss machine for kids!

Along the way, he picked up a rescue pup as companion - Bitza, now his loyal hound. So, just when you might think that his eyecatching arrangement couldn't get any more so, he has now popped a Gyro he came across on top of the tinny! "What’s it all about?” you may ask. The answer is awareness. Sam’s unusual rig, chugging along at 40 km per hour top speed, cops attention wherever he goes. The vehicles and adornments carry logos and posters from the charities he’s raising money for, and the many, many sponsors who are supporting his long journey.

fencing, mustering and lending a hand whenever he can. And his idea is working - his blog page has attracted more than 70,000 followers and each town he stop at lls his charity collection tins. The ABC ran a great story recently: https://www.abc.net.au/news/ 2021-08-27/travelling-jackarooraises-thousands-for-rural-mentalhealth/100406492?fbclid=IwAR3cAzze6NHUgaC1_fVS1Eyb7CLZK6F3EQBqzOnczPCpN0Y9Y6 HCOO6V8. At last count, he’s raised $18,250 for Dolly's Dream and at least $43,000 for the RFDS and we expect an update on the totals shortly.

He followed the Show circuit right up to Mt Isa, helping the shows bump in and out in exchange for charity donations – and the odd feed. He stops at farms

Sams proposed route - Maleny to Maleny!

Recognising that mental health issues are prevalent in the rural sector, he’s turned his attention to this important need, using humour to draw attention to a serious and insidious problem.
