Queensland Government announces $250 million plan for Juvenile Youth Remand Centre

In response to the juvenile crime spree spinning out of control, the Queensland Government announces a new $250 million juvenile remand centre to be built.

The Queensland Government has announced the construction of a dedicated remand facility for juveniles which will make sure that young people have a place to go whilst on remand awaiting a court date. This facility is not a long term watch house, but is in response to addressing concerns about youth crime after a series of highprofile incidents and legislative reactions. This facility will hold up to 50 detainees at a time. It is only the first stage as stage 2 will be eventually added to hold a further 30 detainees. Stage 1 is expected to be opened in 2024. It will be constructed using a “rapid build” modular technology to put the facility together quickly. It will be built adjacent to the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre at Waco. This facility is to add to the new youth detention centres planned for Woodford and Cairns which

are expected to be operational, potentially as early as 2026.

The number of children in detention in Queensland has been climbing year on year, against the trend nationally.

Deputy Premier Mr Miles said there were programs available to children once they had been sentenced to prison time to help them turn their lives around, but he also acknowledged time spent on remand was getting longer.

The new Serious Repeat Offender Index (SROI) in its latest annual report, found 17 per cent of young offenders – or 568 children – were responsible for nearly half of crimes committed in 2021-22.

This plan comes just 12 months after a similar plan to turn the Caloundra Watch-house into a temporary centre to hold juvenile offenders was cancelled. In preparation for the use of the Caloundra watch-house and the subsequent restoration back to the original purpose for that building cost the taxpayer in the vicinity of $5 million dollars.

This was caused because the community consultation process which alone cost over $35,000 had not been concluded.

George Robert Diefenbach

A service celebrating the life of George Robert Diefenbach was held at the Maleny Uniting Church on Thursday September 21. This was the largest funeral celebration held in the church with approximately 250 Malenyites attending.

George was born at Nambour hospital on 16 June 1933, the second youngest of eight children (siblings Nell, Glad, Ivy, Ted, Violet, Norm and John) to parents George and Nellie Diefenbach.

George arrived in Maleny in 1942 when George at the age of 9 with his family. The Diefenbach family worked on a number of farms throughout the district over the years before work in a number of saw mills around the district before joining the PMG as a phone linesman, a career spanning 31 years.

George was a well-known and active participant in various aspects of Maleny’s community life for many years, volunteering with many organisations such as the Maleny auxiliary fi brigade, men’s shed, Maleny Historical Society, golf and tennis clubs.

Finding romance nearby, on a neighbouring farm George met Elizabeth (Betty) Howard whom he went on to marry on the 6th May 1961 at the Maleny Methodist Church.

Right to the end George had attended the many community interests that he had and he celebrated his 90th birthday with the Maleny Senior Citizens club of which he was a member.

George passed away on September 10th peacefully at the age of 90 following a long illness..

Queensland Housing Crisis & More

Housing Crisis

New data reveals house block approvals have slumped to an historic low under the Palaszczuk Labor Government, building more pressure on the Queensland Housing Crisis.

The figures from the Queensland Statisticians Office shows approvals have plummeted 30 per cent under the Palaszczuk Government and are now at the lowest since records began 20 years ago, except for at the height of the global pandemic.

With fewer house block approvals, fewer homes are built, sending rents skyrocketing and leaving Queensland’s growing population fighting just to keep a roof over their head.

“Fewer house blocks are being approved than a decade ago, despite our population continuing to balloon.

We should be seeing more house blocks approved to ensure the homes are being built to ease the Queensland Housing Crisis. Instead, we have limited

land supply and the cost of existing homes to buy or rent continues to be pushed through the roof.”

Prison Overcrowding

For some prisons in Queensland to reach 150% capacity highlights the chaos and crisis under the watch of Minister Mark Ryan and Labor, and is another example of the Government’s failure to plan.

Overcrowding has become a growing issue under the Queensland Government. Prison overcrowding has a major impact on prison staff safety. In the last financial year 385 Corrections staff who were assaulted.

Minister Ryan is on notice that should deaths, serious injuries or escapes occur in one of these facilities linked to overcrowding, he will be held accountable as he is directly responsible.

POLITICAL COMMENT MADE BY

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll at Budget Estimates

“The Service Delivery Redesign Project, a maligned project in the Queensland Police Service to “streamline” frontline work and cut red tape cost taxpayers millions of dollars The total cost of the dumped project was actually $8.78m.”

Pet registration helps Sunshine Coast Council reunite lost pets with their owners as well as provide funding for services such as education programs to promote responsible pet ownership, reuniting and care of lost animals and animal management within the community.

Significant discounts apply for de-sexed and micro-chipped pets, with the cost being just $24 or free for pensioners. There is also a once time life registration.

Thanks Gail for your service to the Maleny Community

It is with much sadness that on Saturday September 30th that we learnt of the passing of Gail Denver following a long illness. Gail and her family had been residents of the Maleny District for over 40 years

Right to the very end Gail was heavily involved in volunteering for the many organisations that she tirelessly worked for. Just some of those organisations included: - Pattemore House, The Maleny Drama Group where she was an actor, director and writer. The Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club became her passion following the allocation of the Maleny Precinct to house many community organisations. The Maleny Show Society saw her as a steward for the Beef Cattle Pavilion for over 30 years, the Precinct and so much more.

Through her volunteering Gail was well known to much of the Maleny community, both long termed and newer residents.

Gail was never idle when it comes to helping out her favourite community organisations in the community.

On International Women’s Day 2023 the ZONTA Club of Blackall Range awarded the prestigious 2023 ‘Woman of Achievement Award’ to Gail. The award was presented to Gail by ZONTA District 22 Lieutenant Governor, Ms Peta Ludwig

The Denver family, mum Jo Denver, brother Simon Denver and sister Jane Denver (deceased) and Gail herself were all very talented writers and directors , especially for theatrical presentations.

Gail will leave a very big hole in many community organisations.

There will be celebration of Gail’s life at 10.00am on Saturday 21st October. It’ll be at the Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club club-house located at the end of Parkland Drive on the Maleny Precinct, in North Maleny.

All are welcome to attend and to celebrate her life!

Bushfires can be started by natural causes, such as lightning strikes, or by people (accidentally or on purpose).

Temperatures have risen quickly in September and are expected to continue are to rise over the coming summer period. That along with a drier than usual spring will ensure that fire conditions will constantly be in the extreme range.

In some areas it is expected be up to 10 degrees higher than average. This burst of extreme heat will be accompanied by heightened fire risks.

We have already seen evidence of the heightened fire risk as on September 14th at about 2p.m. the Queensland Fire Service put out an evacuation warning for the area around Mawsons Road and Holt Road Beerwah.

A QFES spokesman described the fire as a “large grass fire that is

very fast moving.” It was about 2km in size and said 15 crews were battling the blaze.

Water bombing planes were also used to fight the bushfire at Beerwah on Sunday.

This is just an example of what we can expect for the coming bushfire season.

We are now in an El Nino situation so there are drier than normal conditions accompanying that and with the higher temperatures it is very difficult to control a fire once it gets going.

Introspect of the September fires, as an example, at 12:41pm on Monday, 18th September 2023 there was still a stay informed warning associated with this fire.

Learn from this fire because similar incidents can be repeated. A police spokesperson t said properties between Steve Irwin Way, Irwin Rd, Mawsons Rd and the Bruce Hwy, including Holt Rd, should prepare to leave at very short notice as the fire had broken containment lines and was heading in a westerly direction towards Beerwah.

Burys Road and Mawsons Road were closed, and delays were seen on the Bruce Highway. As of 5pm Monday 18th September the fire had burned through 350ha and was “contained but not

When were the worst bushfires in Australia’s history?

The Black Saturday bushfires in January 2009 were the worst in Australia's history, killing 173 people.

Almost 80 communities and entire towns were left unrecognisable.

The fires burned more than 2,000 properties and 61 businesses.

The cost was staggering!

Weather conditions and fuel conditions play a part in bushfires happening. Materials such as leaf litter, bark, small branches and twigs, grasses and shrubs can provide fuel for bushfires. Even Australia Zoo was not exempted from the alert zone. Thankfully the Zoo have a well established fire protocol, extensive equipment, and trained personnel on alert at Australia Zoo.

Even though Emergency Service personnel may have the fire under control a quick the wind change takes the fire in another direction.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson said the risk of bushfires will continue increasing and predicts the fires will become more frequent and more intense as the weeks pass and temperatures soar. The BOM expects temperatures to be more than 10 degrees above average

danger, with no rainfall on the horizon.

This fire shows that fires can happen close to all our homes and it is important to be “Fire Ready” so that action can be taken quickly to ensure the safety of families.

What are ways of preventing bushfires?

You can remove native vegetation around homes, strategically reduce fuel across the landscape, and construct fuel breaks and fire access tracks, as part of your overall preparedness. You can also discuss with your RFB Regional Staff how to manage bushfire risks while minimising the affects on native plants and animals.

The September fires are the first of what is expected to be a number of fires through this season and we expect to have an elevated fire risk season all the way through summer.

Dry air, westerly winds and warm temperatures are the main reason behind the increased fire

People can stay prepared by ensuring gutters around the home are cleaned regularly and the grass has been mowed and keep up to date through local radio and official Emergency Services social media

More than that you can become involved with your local Rural Fire Brigade as a volunteer. Apart from busy fire fighting at the fire front there are many jobs to be done, such as equipment maintenance, administration, manning phones during emergence incidents along with feeding the “troops”.

So you can see that there is a job for all ages and talents.

With the coming expected season coming our community is going to need all the volunteers it can get to provide some safety for our homes.

Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

Maleny SES looking for volunteers

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

Take care with charging mobility devices

With the continuing fast uptake of electric mobility devices such as scooters and e bikes there has also been a fast increase in the number of fires in homes caused by the charging of those devices.

This increase in fires is caused in part by a lack of regulation around how the technology is developed and how people would charge the batteries.

The ACCC supports the development of labelling standards and improving consumer information on the battery functionality. Many people either do not understand the dangers of incorrectly charging this type of batteries.

Emergency Services advised against charging devices with larger batteries like e-bikes in houses as higher temperatures are reached during charge. Don’t take the risk with overcharging.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

Well the time is almost here when we have to cast that vote to change the constitution to allow for a”Voice to Parliament” to be inserted.

On Saturday, 14 October 2023, Australians will finally make up their mind as to the right process to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

What is the Constitution? Well, the Constitution contains the basic rules for the Australian Government and is Australia's fundamental law and how the country is to be governed. The Constitution has a special status as it overrides all other laws and can't be changed by the Parliament of the day - it can only be changed by a vote of the people of Australia. Once changes are made they are permanent, even if they do not work as expected.

The constitution was the founding document and took effect on January 1st, 1901 as part of the Federation of Australia. Since then there have been 44 attempts to change it, but only 8 have succeeded. The last vote to change it was in 1999 when Aussies voted as to a change of Australia to Republic status. This referendum was a failure.

On this occasion the vote to change the constitution is a major decision for the future of Australia. It must be taken seriously, even though many politicians and some indigenous people have treated it as a way to progress their own personal desires.

No one would argue that Australian Indigenous people should be well cared for and not be disadvantaged, neither should any other member of Australia’s diverse population. There is a difference between not providing adequate services to our indigenous brothers and not adequately ensuring that those services are provided in a timely and efficient manner. Silly throwing money at the problems with no surety that it is being used in the most efficient and appropriate manner.

Simply inscribing the Voice to Parliament into the Constitution, without proper scrutiny is not going to improve the lot of one indigenous person. Already there are a number of indigenous people in all parliaments of Australia and it is their job to presenting a voice to parliament as it is the duty of all politicians to present a voice to parliament on behalf of all people of Australia.

A YES vote is only going to further divide the people of Australia without any benefit to anyone. A Royal Commission into how services are provided or squandered would provide more benefits to all peoples of Australia - More efficiency in provided is what is needed - not a change to the Constitution.

that he has new neighbours and a few days ago their two boys were playing football when one of the boys was attacked by a vicious Rottweiler. Thinking quickly, the other boy rips a board off the nearby fence, wedges it down the dog’s collar, and twists, breaking the dog’s neck.

A local News reporter hears about the incident and rushes over to interview the boy. “Young Lions Fan Saves Friend From Vicious Animal,” he starts writing in his notebook.

But I’m not a Lions fan,” the little hero replies. “Sorry, since we are in Maleny just assumed you were,” says the reporter, and he starts again.

“Bronco’s Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Attack,”! he jots in his notebook. “I’m not a Bronco fan either,” the boy responds.

The reporter starts again: “Maroons supporter risks life in heroic rescue” “I’m not a Maroons fan either,” the boy responds.

“I assumed everyone in Maleny was either for the Lions, Broncos or the Maroons. What team do you cheer for?” the reporter asks.

“We are both from Sydney and I’m a Blue’s fan,” the boy says.

The reporter starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes: “Little Redneck Cockroach Vandalises Fence and Kills Beloved Family Pet.”

Everything is in the perception. Nothing should be taken for granted and nothing should be assumed.

My thought for today is “Great things never come from comfort zones.”

Loans Demystified!

Loans are detailed and complex documents that have numerous provisions, over the next few articles we will review just a few of the issues involved in the loan agreement.

In addition to the well-known home loan there are also a plethora of personal and business loans of various types.

Loans can be fixed or variable or some combination thereof, and mortgages can be low documentation (low doc) or can offer an introductory rate at the start of the loan.

The two primary types of loan agreements are secured and unsecured.

If you enter into a secured loan agreement you must provide some form of security to the lender, but whether secured or unsecured you will likely be required to provide a guarantee.

A guarantor usually provides a limited guarantee. Often, this will cover the debt plus a percentage of

any additional expenses including interest incurred if the loan repayments are late.

Standard provisions in most loans include the:

✓ amount of the loan;

✓ interest rate;

✓ loan is secured or unsecured;

✓ term of the loan (how long the borrower has to repay the loan);

✓ amount of repayments; and

✓ frequency of repayments.

Parties should never enter into a loan without seeking legal advice.

Take care everyone!

Number of Snake bites increase

A Q A S spokesperson reports that a three-year-old in Central Queensland suffered multiple bites from one of the world’s most venomous snakes, an eastern brown smoke. It is a timely warning that snakes are once

again on the prowl after hibernating for winter, so take extra care in summer..

Whilst the Queensland ambulance personnel responded to 846 snake bites in 2022 only 3 deaths were reported for the

entire Australian population for the same period.

This is mainly because now Australia has great access to highquality anti-venom that ca be used once a patient reaches hospital.

The town was renamed in 1916 during World War 1 due to anti-German sentiment. The name Witta is a corruption of the word wetya meaning dingo in the Kabi language.

How much battery power do I need for my home?

If you're looking eliminate your electricity bills, you'll need a big battery – most likely 10-14kWh. Most people use more electricity at night, than in the daytime. With a battery, you can use the free solar electricity in your battery to power your home through the night. The sooner you install solar - the sooner you start to save money.

RedEarth’s PowerOasis is a fully integrated, ready-to-run and modular Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) catering for the niche 50-400kVA power range.

It has the option to use both the inbuilt solar PV MPPT or AC-coupled solar PV inverters can be added.

“Back in Queensland” ….. continuing on with my mission!

Thank-you everyone for following my Adventures on here and for your ongoing support/donations towards the Charities and towards raising Awareness for Mental health out Bush! I have now passed 200,000followers. On the way to Mataranka I Pulled into the The Pink Panther Pub in Larrimah for a lunch break and to let Bitsa stretch her legs. Whilst in Larrimah I was able to visit the Larrimah Museum where they had great displays on the rucking History in the NT. We’ve come a long way in 75 years, from these old and rugged trucks to the modern full aircon and air ride suspension of the today.

I pulled into Mataranka just after Dusk all lit up like a Christmas tree! I pulled into the Territory Manor Motel and Caravan Park for the night. The owners not only let me camp up for the night but shouted me and Bitsa a feed. That is true country hospitality.

I’m Always happy to call into local schools, as I did here at the Mataranka School, on my travels and gave them a quick talk about Dolly's Dream, Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia and Drought Angels. This includes how they serve the rural communities of our country.

I’m Finally back in Darwin. It has been 1 1/2 years since I left here with the The Great Moscow Circus.

Be a real “Mate”

Make sure that you look after your matesTreat them all well!.

There are no places for bullies or abusers.

I’m now back to do my HC truck licence as well as a few other things before heading down the Centre to Adelaide.

Kylie from Robbie Robbins Reserve has been her usual awesome self and is letting me camp up here at the Reserve in Darwin which has awesome hot

showers and big open sites as a donation to me whilst I do my various charity related endeavours which is a very much welcomed and appreciated.

I’ll also be attending the Junior Robbie Robins Rodeo that’s coming up this weekend for anyone in Darwin who’s coming down, I’ll be more than happy to have a yarn and you can take a few photos of Slim

I have now raised over $200,000 for the charities!
