Treat your “Mum” on mother’s Day! Many Australians celebrate Mother’s Day by showing their appreciation for the achievements and efforts of mothers and mother gures. It is annually observed in Australia on the second Sunday of May which this year is Sunday May 9th, 2021. On Sunday many Australians will spend the day celebrating their mums and other special women in their lives. Some mums may be given cards, owers and gifts, while others may enjoy breakfast in bed or a lunch out.

woman Janet Heyden started the tradition after becoming concerned for the lonely, forgotten aged mothers at Newington State Hospital where she regularly visited a friend.

Mother’s Day has long been a part of the Australian calendar, and always held on the 2nd Sunday in May – but where did the idea to dedicate a day to honouring motherhood come from?

She successfully campaigned for local schools and businesses to donate gifts to the ladies, many of whom had lost their husbands and sons in World War I or had never been wives or mothers because of the war.

In 1870, American writer and women's rights activist Julia Ward Howe rst appealed to women to unite and bring peace throughout the world (later known as the Mother's Day Proclamation). She proposed that a mother's day for peace be commemorated every year. It was not until 1924, following the losses of World War I, that Mother's Day was rst of cially held in Australia. Sydney

reunions, becoming a day when families can get together. It’s predicted that the wonderful eating establishments across the Range will be very busy on Sunday, and thanks to Maleny Commerce, you can also give your mum a lovely surprise by giving her a Maleny Gift Card.

Happy Mother’s Day everyone!

There are more than six million mothers in Australia caring for children and other people every day of the year. Hopefully they feel appreciated every day, and over the year, Mother's Day has become an occasion for family

Updates to Mary Cairncross Park facilities

The Sunshine Coast Council’s annual planned burn season will begin this month, with a number of sites across the coast earmarked for treatment.

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Park has been undergoing a Furniture Renewal Program to better provide for the many visitors who enjoy the area. The park is continuing to grow in popularity.

The council’s proactive Bush re Management Program aimed to protect our community and protect and enhance our environment.

The new furniture locations are highlighted in blue in the image below.

This program has now been completed.

Councillor Winston Johnston advises that there are security fences around the works to allow the new turf to establish and will be removed on the 23rd April.

Planned burns help reduce the amount of forest fuel in targeted locations before the Spring bush re season, and take place in the cooler months so the res are less intense and more manageable compared to a potential unplanned bush re.

Works included:

Low intensity, patch mosaic burning is used to reduce the impact on native animals and achieve these desired ecological outcomes. Vegetation management, including mowing and slashing, is also part of council’s Bush re Management Program.

Public transport we need on the Sunshine Coast - Heavy RAIL on the Camcos corridor “A message from local Federal Member for Fisher, Mr. Andrew Wallace”

HomeBuilder extended to support more jobs

The FederalGovernment is extending the construction commencement requirement for the successful HomeBuilder program from six months to 18 months for all existing applicants, bringing the total level of expected Government support for the construction sector under the program to $2.5 billion. More than 121,000 Australians have applied for the grant which is expected to support around $30 billion of residential construction projects. The HomeBuilder program was speci cally designed to protect tradies’ jobs and catalyse economic activity in the construction industry, particularly residential construction, in response to the downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Government’s decision to provide existing applicants with an additional 12 months to commence construction responds to unanticipated delays in the construction industry caused by COVID-19 related supply constraints including delays in global supply chains and recent natural disasters. The extension will only apply to existing applicants and provide an additional 12 months to commence construction from the date that the building contract

was signed. All applicants who signed contracts during the HomeBuilder eligibility period between 4 June 2020 and 31 March 2021 will have this extension applied to them.

Extending the construction commencement requirement will smooth out the HomeBuilder construction pipeline, support jobs in the construction sector, and ensure that existing applicants facing dif culties in starting construction on their new builds and renovations are not denied a HomeBuilder grant due to circumstances outside their control. The high take-up of HomeBuilder has shown that it has achieved its goal of encouraging those who had pulled back from undertaking a new build, or substantial rebuild, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, to enter the market. “The swift introduction of HomeBuilder gave Australians the con dence to build or rebuild a home during a period of great uncertainty. Applications closed on the 14th of April, however, applicants have until 30 April 2023 to submit all supporting documentation (such as invoices for work done, and proof that construction has started) to their State or Territory Revenue Of ce.

The supporting documentation will allow for the payment of the HomeBuilder grant. Timing of the payment depends on whether an application relates to a new build, substantial renovation or off-the plan / new home purchase: New builds – grants will be paid after construction has commenced and the rst progress payment has been made to the builder. Substantial renovations – grants will be paid after construction has commenced and at least $150,000 of the contract price has been paid in respect of the renovation. For off-the-plan / new home purchases – grants will be paid after the applicant(s) name is registered on title. More information on HomeBuilder can be found on the website below: https://treasury.gov.au/ coronavirus/homebuilder Powering Communities Grants are available Now. Are you part of a community group that would bene t from funding for new solar panels, energy ef cient new equipment or solar-connected batteries? If so contact my of ce now for more information.

Safer Older Drivers hints! Driving safely relies on good perception, judgement and physical capability. As you get older, some of these things can become impaired – increasing the risk of being involved in a crash. It’s important to be aware of changes in your mind and body as you age. If you suspect that your ability to drive has been affected by ageing or a health condition, you should visit a doctor as soon as possible. If necessary, you must report the condition to Queensland Transport. Special consideration should be taken when you’re sharing the road with heavy vehicles. Keep an eye out for indicators. When a heavy vehicle is turning across your path, keep back from the intersection as the truck may require more space to make the turn. Never overtake a heavy vehicle on a curve or crest. Be patient and wait for a suitable stretch of road. Most highways provide strategic overtaking lanes. A patient driver is a safer driver.

Tell your insurance company you want your local to repair your car. Lifetime warranty, free detail upon completion and award winning tradesmen working on your car.

Davis Divan Automobile “the car of the future” At the time it was touted as “the car of the future”. It is is a three-wheeled convertible built by the Davis Motorcar Company between 1947 and 1949 in Los Angeles, California. Who would have thought, but the car featured aircraft-inspired styling details as well as disc brakes, hidden headlights, and built-in jacks.

It seated 4 people on ONE bench seat. Maybe a bit “con ned”. Unfortunately, only 13 of the cars were ever produced, however 12 of them still survive today. The vehicles top speed ranged from 100 mph (160 km/h) to 116 mph and could do a “U” turn at 50mph. Wonder why it never sold? Truthful Jones says

An Old Codger’s Thoughts and opinion At the onset I must say that my prayers and thoughts are with the people of India at this, their most dif cult time with the COVID Pandemic. Australia must and should give and send all possible assistance to them in their time of need. Having said that I must also say that I do not have a lot of sympathy for the Aussie cricketers and broadcasters who went to India to play in the IPL Cricket League during a time when they fully knew that the COVID pandemic was raging throughout that country. They were not even plying for Australia but personally chasing the “big money”. In all fairness they are fully entitled to do so, but under the circumstances they should have taken the risks into account before leaving Australia. They left Australia thinking that the money and notoriety would get them back should things turn bad. I respect Michael Slater rstly as an International cricketer and now as a cricket broadcaster and I will always respect him for those things, but I must say that I am disappointed at his outbursts because the cricket caravan cannot simply return to Australia at will and subject Australians at home at heavy risk also. It cannot be said that the cricketers and support staff have been in a bubble and not subject to having caught the virus as already at least one Australian player has tested positive. The virus could have very easily been returned to Australia and thus subjected the Australian community to COVID. The job of the Prime Minister is to protect AUSTRALIA rst and foremost. Importing the COVID virus back into Australia by bringing back a relatively few people is not going to do either India or Australia and favours. For Michael Slater to say “The Prime Minister has blood on his hands and he should go and see the dead bodies in the streets of India” does nothing toward getting help in his plea to get the cricketers home. It smacks of Slater wanting some special personal preference. Slater continued. ““The panic, the fear of every Australian in India is real.” That is understandable and in a perfect world we could change that with just the ick of the wrist, but this is not a perfect world. There is no bene t to anyone, either in India or Australia nor is it of any bene t to import the virus into Australia and for Australians to also suffer in the same way that India is suffering. This is a human crisis - it will not bene t anyone by spreading it.

Truthful says that his niece, a blonde walks into a bank in Brisbane and asks for the loan of cer. She says she’s going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank of cer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so the blonde hands over the keys to a new Holden SS ute. The car is parked on the street in front of the bank; she has the title, and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank Manages and his of cers all enjoy a good laugh at the blonde for using a $70.000 car as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drives the Holden into the bank’s underground garage and parks it there in a high security area. Two weeks later, Truthful’s niece returns and repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan of cer says, “Miss, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely; but we are a little puzzled. We checked you out and found that you are a millionaire. What puzzles us is - why would you bother to borrow $5,000?” The blond replies..... ”Where else in Brisbane can I park my car for two weeks in a high security area for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?” Morale; Never judge a book by the cover. There can be a lot more between the covers that is not always readily evident to the unsuspecting.

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre

BOARDWALK FUNDRAISING EVENT

by Rick Paget, MNC Coordinator

Along with housing availability and affordabity, homelessness has become a growing area of awareness and concern within our local community and across the Sunshine Coast region.

On Saturday March 13th a boardwalk fundraising event was held on the Riverside Boardwalk and in the adjoining Cappriccios Restaurant and the other local business owners in the Riverside Centre who organised and hosted a fantastic fundraising event to raise funds for the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Women’s House.

Information shared at the Mayoral Roundtable on Homelessness by the Queensland Council of Social Service estimates around 1500 people are experiencing homelessness or are marginally housed on the Sunshine Coast. Additionally, 1942 households are currently registered for housing assistance in the Sunshine Coast Housing Service Centre catchment area, with 1325 of these households considered to be very high need.

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre would like to acknowledge and express appreciation to Leesa Tilden from Flaunt Maleny, and Tammy and Don from Cappriccio’s Italian Restaurant for their hard work and generosity.

Homelessness can affect anyone at any point in their lives. It is a complex issue that requires a long-term and systematic effort across agencies, sectors and the community to address While the Neighbourhood Centre continues to provide Emergency Relief and referral support to those doing it tough, we also engage with a wider network of housing support agencies to further explore and develop viable solutions. One such solution offered by the Neighbourhood Centre is the Maleny Women’s House, which opened in December 2018 in response to this identi ed area of need. The Women’s House provides transitional housing to women while they seek suitable longer-term housing.

These local business owners in the Riverside Centre organised and hosted a fantastic fundraising event, designed to raise community awareness around homelessness and to raise much needed funds for the Maleny Women’s House.

Glass Housing 55 is an initiative in the Glasshouse Country area, focusing on housing homeless women aged over 55, a growing demographic Homelessness among women over 55 is almost invisible as they often don’t self-identify as homeless or in housing stress. They mainly become homeless due to spousal death, separation or divorce, domestic violence, under-employment, high accommodation costs, mental health and wellbeing or family breakdown.

A massive ‘thank you’ also goes to State Local Member for Glasshouse, Andrew Powell who MC’d the event, plus all who contributed and attended. $4500 was raised and donated on the night!

Women in these situations tend to move frequently, couch surf, house sit, sleep in their vehicles or go into unstable share situations.

ANZAC DAY 2021

Crowds were back at the Maleny ANZAC Day Ceremony following the cancellation of the 2020 ANZAC Day Ceremony as a result of the COVID Pandemic. Families gathered to pay their respects at the local services and to remember those who served.

What we missed at the Service I don’t know if you noticed it too, but there were a lot less vintage cars in this years Parade. It is obviously a “sign of the times”, but one thing we did miss at the service was the smiling face of a number of local returned service people who have passed on since the last parade thus the less need for the vintage cars to carry our returned elderly service people. In future years the “older Veterans will be from other Wars such as Korea and Vietnam with younger veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq. Irrespective of the period - all veterans fought to keep Australia FREE and we should always honour them.

Seen at the RSL Maleny Sub Branch Main ANZAC Day Service were Andrew Powell, State Member for Glasshouse, Andrew Wallace - LNP Federal Member for Fisher and Councillor Winston Johnston - Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council.

ANZAC Day 2021 Dawn Service Remembering all the brave men & women who fought for our freedom at the Maleny ANAZC Day Dawn Service. On 25 April 1915 Australian soldiers landed at what is now called Anzac Cove on the Gallipoli Peninsula. For the vast majority of the 16,000 Australians and New Zealanders who landed on that rst day, this was their rst experience of combat. By that evening, 2000 of them had been killed or wounded and worse was to come.

Maleny Cultural & Historical Society Inc.

Vision is to “To Save and Display Maleny's History Some Maleny history with Harvey Bryce

Collards Curse Right from the start Maleny’s future was based on the dairy industry. Originally the grasses were based on paspalum pastures. One of the problems with paspalum pastures was that during the winter periods it dried off and that forced farmers to hand feed their dairy cattle.

members involved in the dairy industry. Kikuyu grass is native to the highland regions of East Africa. and is most well known for being a highly invasive and aggressive grower making it a robust pasture grass for cattle.

From those eight runners it wasn’t too long before kikuyu grass began to spread through local paddocks. It was not uncommon to see kids from the various local dairy farms out in rain storms madly planting kikuyu grass runners.

Kikuyu is a perennial groundhugging grass which spreads by runners.

Hand feeding often became a very expensive alternative.

This grass twas not available in the Maleny area at that time.

One of the pioneering families who was involved in the dairy industry was the Collard family. Descendants to the Collard family still reside in the area.

In 1918 Alf Collard re-visited the Northern Rivers area and he brought back eight kikuyu runners.

Many of the Maleny dairy farming families originally came from the Northern Rivers areas of New South Wales. In that area kikuyu grasses imported from South Africa were being trialled by

Wagon mounted milk tank at the Maleny Co-operative Dairy Association Ltd. Factory, Coral Street, Maleny, September 1960

Kikuyu grass is a member of the Poaceae grass family. The Kikuyu Grass is characterised by a very succulent and soft leaf and is quick to recover in the heat. The texture of the lawn is quite soft and is a lighter lime green in colour when compared to other varieties. Because it requires very little maintenance and could withstand the winter months and at the same time it stands up to the hot summer days and provides acceptable drought tolerance. it was perfect as a stock food.

Because Kikuyu grass is so highly invasive of surrounding garden beds it was given the nick-name of “Collar’s Curse” by some people normally those not involved in the dairy industry, named after the person who introduced it to the area Farmers had to be careful as under certain circumstances Kikuyu pasture can become poisonous when it grows rapidly after a period of prolonged dry weather.

Who

Remembers

this?

Armistice Day Parade, Maleny, 1919 Maybe a bit before our time - but maybe not our grand-parents. The rst of cial Armistice Day events were subsequently held in the grounds of Buckingham Palace on the morning of 11 November 1919. It was also known as Poppy Day and was observed by the Commonwealth of Nations to Commemorate the Commonwealth war dead from WW1. Armistice Day commemorated the armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m. As the result of an act of parliament passed by the House of Commons, the bill changed the name Armistice Day to “Remembrance Day”.
