Australia Day EXPO, Maleny 2021 Cancelled due to Covid

Australia Day, a public holiday on Tuesday January 26th is Australia's National Day. Australia Day encourages us to celebrate all the things we love about our country.

Australia Day is a day when we all should Re ect - Respect - and Celebrate all things that makes this a great nation. Unfortunately, the 2021 Maleny Aussie Day Expo at the Maleny show-grounds has been cancelled because of the continuing Covid situation.

Chairman of the Expo Committee, Rick Vickers said recently "We regret to advise that, despite our best efforts in planning the activities and detailing the many procedures required, the Hinterland Aussie Day Expo will be cancelled for 2021.

It's the day to re ect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.

The organising committee took advice and suggestions from Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Health, Maleny Show Society and staff from TS CENTAUR and found that the procedures and restrictions to be imposed due to COVID 19 would be too much of a burden to conduct the three hour Expo event in 2021. Planning for the 2022 is already being considered and will be back bigger and better!

Traf c lines up for Covid tests On the weekend of January 9th and 10th saw a long line of cars lined up along Macadamia Drive, Maleny headed towards the Maleny Hospital to have a test for the COVID virus. About 500 tests were conducted. Maleny SES group was called to Assist QLD Health staff with traf c management safety as the traf c lineup continued to grow. The waiting time grew to over 2 hours as the message got out that the testing centre had been set up at the Maleny Hospital. In view of the fact that no further positive cases of COVID have been found lockdowns in the Greater Brisbane area has been lifted and the wearing of masks in the Maleny area is not necessary at this time.

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Another story from the past

Step back in history at the Narrow Rail Museum at Woodford Light Rail Museum Woodford

The Australian Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Society (ANGRMS) was formed in January, 1971 when a group of railway enthusiasts met to discuss the possibility of preserving a representative collection of locomotives and rolling stock used on the Queensland sugar mill tramways. The Society was incorporated under the Companies Act of Queensland as a NonPro t Company, Limited by Guarantee, in September 1972.

Two years later Hope started up the rst commercial sugar mill and it was in the following year that he brought Paci c islands labourers to work his plantation. This was the beginning of one of the early major industries for Queensland. Sugar mills were progressively established and located in close proximity to the farms that started to grow sugar cane up the whole of Queensland. Mills work day and night during the cane season (usually June to November in Far North Queensland) and handle cane

promptly to ensure the quality of juice is maintained. A major part of this industry was the need to transport the raw cane from the farms to the mills and this is where narrow guage rail came to the fore.

The Narrow Gauge Rail Museum at Woodford looks at the history of narrow gauge rail in Queensland, especially as it served the Queensland sugar industry from the 1880’s onwards. This loco is now in the possession of the Nambour Museum and is undergoing a restoration project.

Many locals will remember the locos that hauled the cane to the Nambour Sugarmill prior to it closing in 2003. The best remembered loco was the steam engine, Shay.

In 2005 there were over 4000 kilometres of cane railways in Queensland based around 21 sugar mills stretching from Mossman in the north to Maryborough in the south.

Queensland's rst 'locomotive worked' cane tramways were built in 1880. Steam locomotives dominated the Australian sugar elds from 1882 until the 1960s. They were then replaced by diesel powered locos.

Just a short drive from Maleny is another opportunity to take a step back in history and have a look at how things operated between 50 and 100 years ago.

Captain Louis Hope and John Buhot established the rst viable cane plantation near Brisbane in 1862.

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Step back in history at the Narrow Rail Museum at Woodford (Continued from Page 3) These tramways transport some 36 million tonnes of sugar cane per crushing season (June thru to December). All the mill tramways were of 2 feet (610mm) gauge. Rail lines ran through the cane elds so that cane was ef ciently handled between the eld and the mill. Cane railways will always continue to surprise and to interest, and they will remain "special" to the men who operate them, to the many visitors to the areas in which they run, and to those who simply love railways. Since the 1890’s throughout Australia similar types of rail transport was used in the timber industry and early mining industry and localised public transport. Why not take a trip to Woodford and take a ride on a memory from the past at the Woodford Narrow Gauge Railway. Then a BBQ on the way home - makes for a great day out. Just a great Sunday drive from Maleny. To nd out more about Australia’s Historic Light Rail networks visit the web site below:

Open Day Train Rides

The Australian Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Society train ride is about 1km train ride and travels to Storeybrook Cottages and Gardens. The train leaves roughly every 30 minutes and the nonpro t organisation caters for families, groups, car clubs and weddings.

This is a bed and breakfast with over 5 acres of relaxing gently meandering herb, cottage and natural gardens which include rare and exotic plants, that presents different vistas and perfumes throughout the year and a large variety of bird life. This is a serene place to enjoy a memorable light lunch, morning or afternoon tea with a range of freshly home baked meals and desserts. This can be served on the veranda or in the gardens. ANGRMS normally uses a steam train for its open days. This all just adds to the authenticity of the train ride. You can get a taste of the Rail Museum at the Facebook Page:

Maleny Paint Supplies now sells Toilet Paper “All for a Good Cause” Make your list, check it twice and then throw that list out the window because we’ve already got your gifting sorted – The A Z Edition. That’s right, this year’s (and every year’s, in our opinion) perfect gift is a box of toilet paper. There are many (many!) reasons why, but we thought we’d start with the top 11. Everyone needs it Have someone in your life who’s impossible to buy for? Finally, there’s a gift you know they’ll actually appreciate. As long as your recipient is potty trained, they’ll have a good use for some toilet paper. You can’t have too much If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that toilet paper is the apocalyptic currency of the future. It’s smart to stock up in the event of Zombies and such. Given the trajectory of this year, that could be any day now. Great for regifting If, for some reason, your giftee is already stocked on TP for the next decade, our A - Z Edition is great for regifting. Whether it’s giving a personalised

initial to a coworker, or a nice phrase to their kid’s teacher… you’d be enabling endless regifting possibilities.

they say about a family who laughs together… The puns are endless

It makes you look like a really good person

Take the plunge with a gift that will delight the crap out of your roommates or loomates. Their cheeks with ush with joy! See what we mean?

Something everyone can use? That’s helping the planet? And building toilets for people in need? COME ON. You’re like St. Nick himself. It’s a conversation starter Look, we’re not dummies. We know toilet paper isn’t the most conventional present. But that’s half the fun! Gathering around the hearth is overrated. We prefer communing over a giant box of loo roll.

It’s meaningful

It’s fun

A gift like toilet paper encourages you to see the beauty in life’s small, everyday items. Sound dramatic? Well maybe it is, but just LOOK at how beautiful these rolls are.

Your mum may have told you not to play with your food, but did she ever say anything about toilet paper? We didn’t think so. Use The A - Z Edition to create word searches, crosswords, and scrambles!

Our rolls are for more than wiping – they’re also perfect for crafting! Garlands, Christmas crackers, origami and more are all just a snip and a fold away.

It’s funny

It makes a statement

People don’t often talk about pooping during the holidays, and we think that’s a shame! Pooping is hilarious. And you know what

Now that’s quite striking under a tree. Once you open The A Z Edition, you can make another statement (literally!) by spelli.

It’s the gift that keeps on giving

Who Gives A Crap? -

We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets? We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under ve dies every two minutes from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Pro ts from the sale of this toilet paper is used our donation could go to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects.

Micro mint to serve (optional)

Preheat the oven according to the type of meat you're roasting, and its weight.

Place the roast on a rack in a roasting dish (if you have one). Raising the roast allows the heat to circulate, browning it evenly all over.

BACK IT UP

An average to slightly-above-average number of tropical cyclones are expected for the 2020–21 Australian tropical cyclone season which of cially runs between November andApril each year.

Don't get carried away when faced with oodwater In the event of oodwater on the road, there are many decision-making factors that can overwhelm drivers into making the wrong choice under pressure. It’s unsafe and inaccurate to test waters by foot. Conditions can change by the time you’re back at your car. But the decision to “Back It Up” is the bravest and smartest thing you can do.

On average, there are 9 to 11 tropical cyclones each season in the Australian region, four of which typically cross the coast. La Niña conditions in the tropical Paci c Ocean and average to warmer-than-average ocean temperatures to the north of Australia have in uenced this year's tropical cyclone outlook. In La Niña years, the rst cyclone to develop across the Australian region typically occurs earlier than normal, around the middle of December. In La Niña years, the date of the rst tropical cyclone to make landfall over Australia is typically in early January. At least one tropical cyclone has crossed the Australian coast each season since reliable records began in the 1970s. Cyclone formation is rarely spread evenly throughout the season; often quiet periods are followed by bursts of activity.

Coon Cheese No More What do you think The Canadian dairy company that now owns Coon cheese has renamed it 'Cheer' cheese after suggestions from Twitter activists that the original name was racist. Coon cheese was named after cheese processor Edward William Coon. Does this mean all his relatives and anyone else with the surname Coon should change it to stop offending people?

Tropical lows that do not intensify into cyclones, or lows that are the remnants of older cyclones, can still produce damaging winds, widespread rainfall, and dangerous ooding. These impacts can extend beyond the tropics into southern areas of the country. Like tropical cyclones, the number of tropical lows that form during La Niña years is typically greater than the number which form during non-La Niña years. Maleny SES Unit is ready to provide assistance in the event of disruptive events.

Cancel Culture is rife and does very little - and often nothing - to make a meaningful difference to the people these activists claim to want to help. This is not the rst time that icons have had name changes that do not relate to racism. What do you think ?

As she stood on the edge of the dock, pondering her fate, Truthful’s mate noticed her as they strolled by. “You’re not thinking of jumping, are you?” he jokingly asked. “Yes, yes I am.” replied the sobbing girl. Putting his arm around her, Truthful’s mate coaxed her back from the edge, “Look, nothing’s worth that. I tell you what, I’m a sailor and am sailing off for Europe tomorrow. Why don’t you stow away on board and start a new life over there. I’ll set you up in one of the lifeboats on the deck, bring you food and water every night, and I’ll look after you if you ‘look after’ me.” The girl, having no better prospects agreed and the Truthful’s mate snuck her on board that night. For the next 3 weeks the sailor would come to her lifeboat every night, bringing food and water and making love to her until dawn. Then, during the fourth week, the captain was performing a routine inspection of the ship & it’s lifeboats. He peeled back the cover to nd the startled young woman and demanded an explanation. The young woman came clean; “I’ve stowed away to get to Europe. One of the sailors is helping me out, he set me up in here and brings me food and water every night, and, and he makes love to me every night.” The puzzled captain stared at her for a moment before a small grin cracked his face and he replied; “He sure is darlin’, this is the Manly Ferry! Who say’s those country blokes are slow when they go to the big city.

Vision is to “To Save and Display Maleny's History”

News from the 5th Light Horse Maleny Regimen

They knew about masks in 191 In 1919 the world underwent a pandemic when Spanish Flu threatened the worlds population. Then as now not a lot was known about the disease and as a result a high toll was taken of the world’s population.

The 5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop is a re-enactment regiment, proudly demonstrating Australian Light Horse skills and dress. The 5th Light Horse Regiment, Maleny Troop is an incorporated group of volunteers and is not as such a military organisation.

100 years later Covid - 19 hit the world. And like then we have no cure for this deadly virus but we know a bit more about handling them and are learning more, fast.

Fundraising for the troop’s activities relies entirely on membership and donations from the private and business sectors of our local community. The troop receives no funding from the Defence Forces.

One thing that they did know in 1919, as shown in the photo below, was the importance of wearing a mask to help restrict the spread of the disease. Not only is the wearing of a mask apparently frowned upon by individual Aussies, but others deliberately out the laws about self isolating for the common good.

The Troop trains the last Saturday of the month from 9.30 am. and members of the public are welcome to watch the riders skills.

Let us hope that the anticipated inoculations being presently tested offer some form of protection in the immediate future.

The Maleny Troop of the 5th Light Horse Regiment is seeking to recruit people for next year as they are currently short of riders.

Why is it so hard today to have Aussies happily wear masks and complying with Covid Health warnings from quali ed medical people in the name of “helping stop the spread”.

Your own horse is required if possible, and we do assist in equipping the tack and uniforms. So folks if you want to help keep the memory of the Light Horse alive, please give Charles a ring on (07) 5494 4828. The Maleny Light Horse Regiment would love to hear from you. ,If you love horses you will not be sorry. Go on - you know you want to!

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News News from Maleny Dairies T h e T h i n gs that yo u r e me mb e r f ro m a pa st l ife

G l a s s r e -us ab le mil k b o t tl e s! Maleny Dairies milk ON TAP at rst Harris Farm Markets in Brisbane as history is made straight from the tap, or you can pick up a bottle already prepared by us,” said Harris Farm Markets co-CEO Tristan Harris.

In the mid 1980’s it became easier and cheaper to buy milk at the grocery store, and as processes were developed to extend milk's shelf life, the milkman began to fade into the past. This was also due to direct pressure on government from the major grocery chains who wanted to include milk in their families shopping - once again the small business operator lost out to big business. History is now coming a full circle as Harris Farm Markets re-opens at their original Queensland site at Clay eld and is once again introducing full avoured milk in re-usable glass bottles. Milk from Maleny’s own multiaward-winning Maleny Dairies will be ON TAP and able to be taken away in re-usable glass bottles. Harris Farm Markets gives shoppers the chance to buy Maleny Dairies’ famous full cream Guernsey milk on tap, is a huge coup for Queensland milk lovers. “It’s about as close as you’ll get to milk straight from the cow. In store and one of the staff will pour a bottle of Maleny Dairies milk

We are extremely proud of our ON TAP MILK offering given it champions the dairy farmer and their local area. It’s how milk is supposed to be, and taste!” Maleny Dairies owners Ross and Sally Hopper, whose family began farming the land in 1948, said, “We are very excited that Harris Farm is prepared to support our great dairy products and, in turn, support Queensland dairy farmers and our Queensland Dairy industry well into the future.” The family-owned Harris Farm Markets will open not one, but two stores in Brisbane, beginning with Clay eld from today before opening a agship store at West Village in West End mid-next year. The two Brisbane stores will offer produce from more than 300 Queensland growers, creators and producers, including Maleny Dairies milk on tap, My Berries from Caboolture, Brisbane’s Roza’s Gourmet sauces, organic chicken from Hobbs Family Farms Organic in Pittsworth. “The Clay eld store is now home to the best in fruit and vegetables,

Sustainability is a driver for the business. In addition to an incredible range of the best local produce, Harris Farms Markets also celebrates IMPERFECT PICKS in every store. About Harris Farm Markets Harris Farm Markets is a family owned and operated business. For more than 40 years Harris Farm Markets has been delivering goodness to Australian families with the core value and belief that Australian families should have the freshest and best available to them. including an organic produce section and a leaderboard of Queensland strawberries and mangoes, as well as a gourmet grocery section of boutique local products, an extensive deli and offering of more than 200 cheeses, a bakery section with the best breads from sourdough to brioche, and a premium meat selection.”

As a young person memories are of milk being delivered each day direct to the home by the milkman and it was in glass reusable bottles.
