Beerwah to Caloundra Rail project on target for 2032 Olympic Games.

Anew heavy rail connection is tracking towards construction on the Sunshine Coast, that will make a trip to Brisbane at least 45 minutes faster than a car. The new rail line would help to reduce congestion on our roads.

The proposed 37km Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line will provide a fast, reliable and sustainable connection between the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay and Brisbane and is projected to cost between $5 and $7 billion dollars.

The Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in the

state, and is forecast to be home to 600,000 people by 2046.

The first stage will see a 19 km dual track built from Beerwah to Caloundra, the longest spur line in the south-east passenger network.

Premier Steven Miles said; “Without the rail line, that development would bring an unmanageable level of congestion to the local road network, making this connection essential for new housing to be brought forward.”

The Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line, planning project builds on the active 2001 Caboolture to Maroochydore Rail Plan.

This rail line is proposed to

Decades in the making - “how much longer”

interchange with buses and the Sunshine Coast Public Transport project at key locations to increase public transport opportunities for the growing Sunshine Coast community, as outlined in the Southern Sunshine Coast Public Transport Strategy.

It is anticipated that the corridor between Beerwah and Maroochydore, will enable rail speeds of up 160km/h.

Heritage Grants now open

The Queensland Government State Government is rich heritage is set to be conserved and celebrated with, allocating over $1 million in grants.

The funding is split between two programs, with $850,000 designated for Community Sustainability Action Grants for Community Heritage, offering up to $50,000 for projects preserving and promoting places on the Queensland Heritage Register.

The remaining $175,000 is allocated to the Showcasing Queensland Heritage grants, a new pilot program supporting events that encourage community appreciation and involvement with heritage-listed places.

These initiatives aim to actively engage community groups, local councils, and place owners in conserving and promoting the state’s diverse historical sites for future generations. Applications close March 25.

Talk about failing the pub test.

Like many locations around Glass House, this crumbling road surface on MalenyKenilworth Road at Witta was reported to TMR.

A repair crew was sent out.

Zoom in to see the “repair”. This is simply not good enough. Whether it’s the D’Ag Highway through Woodford, Kilcoy-Beerwah Road at Cedarton, Steve Irwin Way at Glasshouse

Just some local news from Fisher

Following the Miles Labor Government’ recent announcement about the Sunshine Coast rail stopping at Caloundra and not being built before the 2032 Olympic Games shows just how bad things have become under QLD Labor.

Despite decades of promises, studies and an historic funding commitment, Labor has essentially waved the white flag on SunshineCoastRail from

Beerwah to Maroochydore, pinning its construction to EVEN MORE Federal funding.

Nearly 2 years since we secured $1.6bn for a costed, long-touted and bipartisan project, we find out that it’s doubled in price and is cynically set to finish in Labor-held Caloundra.

When you dither, delay and deride, you blow-out budgets and cripple communities. That’s Labor’s MO.

Regional Queensland always pays the price when Labor trudges through the corridors of power.

Australis Perfect Prep

Acrylic Sealer, Primer and Undercoat

When it comes to painting, preparation is the key. That's why it's important to apply an undercoat, especially on a new wall. An undercoat provides a layer for paint to adhere to, makes a surface flatter, fills in the grain, and can even be used to seal in stains. Primers, on the other hand, adhere to timber surfaces and contain stain inhibiting tannin blockers, while an undercoat is ideal for preparing plasterboard.

Australis Perfect Prep is a combination of Primer - Sealer -Undercoat, all in one product. This makes it a great all round prep coat for all your painting jobs, interior or exterior.

PerfectPrep’s unique formulation requires no sanding on gloss enamels. PerfectPrep will provide excellent adhesion on most surfaces. The product is a water based low odour product that is easy to apply without messy spatter.

iIt is suitable for direct application to all types of timber, masonry, brick, fibre cement, gyprock, vinyl & aluminium sidings, ceramic tiles, laminates and galvanised iron and can be applied with a brush, roller or spray.

Perfect Prep is Dry touch in 30 Minutes and can be re-coated in 1 Hour. It is available in 1 Ltr, 2 Ltr, 4 Ltr, 10 Ltr and15 Ltr sizes. Coverage generally is 10 to 12 sq meters per litre. It has a 15 year guarantee on the product if applied correctly.

It is available at Maleny Paint Place. For more information visit the web site:

Are diesel Utes becoming extinct?

The Australian Federal government is about to penalise the use of heavy diesel four-wheel-drive vehicles thus forcing them down a quicker path to extinction. The reason for this transformation is new laws that are set to be passed by the Federal Government mandating strict emission standards for petrol and dieselpowered vehicles to bring them in line with the ‘Euro 6d’ standards.

It has been announced that strict new-car emissions standards are coming to Australia from 2025. Utilities and 4WDs will be among the hardest hit as the sales of petrol and diesel cars will end in 2035

When will we see new electric powered utilities and SUV’s?

Maleny Players to explore complex murder

The Maleny Players Drama group is to explore a complex murder in the play, The Real Inspector Hound. The play was written between 1961 and 1962 by TomStoppard and draws on his experiences as a Bristol theatre critic. It is set in "Lady Muldoon's country residence one morning in early spring”. This is a 'play within a play’.

The Real Inspector Hound is a one-act play and the plot follows two feuding theatre critics named Moon and Birdboot who are watching a ludicrous setup of a country murder mystery. The play is a direct parody of Agatha Christie’s “closed” settings in which no one can enter or leave, so the characters know that the murderer must be one of them.

Moon and Birdfoot become dangerously implicated in the lethal activities of an escaped madman.

The play originally premiered at the Criterion Theatre in London in June 1968.

The play is running for three weeks and starts with a Premiere on the 5th of April. The dates for performances are 6th and 7th, 13th and 14th, 19th, 20th and 21st of April.

More accommodation development in Maleny

A material change of use application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council to develop the large battle-axe block at 6 Teak Street whereby the land which is currently zoned as medium density residential be rezoned as code assessable.

This means that the development will not be advertised and community submissions will not be sought. The vacant lot will house 23 multiple dwelling units.

The Maleny plans show 12 units in a tightly packed row, with each unit structure made up of a onebedroom downstairs dwelling and a separate twobedroom upstairs dwelling. Each of the 12 adjoining structures will include a two-car carport.

The application states that whilst the density is above that allowed it will not impact on the character of the local area. It will be connected to Riverside Centre by a private pedestrian path.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

There must be elections about as two levels of government “promise the world”.

Politicians are the communities representatives for the various levels of government and are expected to take forward to their parliaments the wishes of the community - they should give their constituents help and advice, communicate the needs of their region to their level of government, and then promote decided policies to the community. - All of this is about making agreements between people so that they can live harmoniously together in groups such as local communities.

Or that is what they are paid for. Very often decisions about community needs and aspirations are made to fit the circumstances of the various parties and their loyal members - not always in the “communities” best interest.

There must be elections in the air as that is the time when individuals are most likely to hear from their representative - when they want to ensure that you vote for them.

One example of not following community wishes revolves around the proposed Maroochydore railway line, also known as the Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line to connect Caloundra and Maroochydore areas to the Queensland Rail network. This extension was envisioned as part of broader efforts to improve public transportation infrastructure in the Sunshine Coast region, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and support economic growth along with reducing the effects of climate change. Land for this rail corridor has been preserved since the 1970s. This actual project was first mooted in the early 1990’s.

This project was an important step in having the 2032 Olympic Games allocated to Brisbane Queensland, which was an ever important pledge of Premier Palaszczuk government. In a recent announcement the Queensland government has announced that the proposed line would terminate at Caloundra and most likely not be completed before the 2032 Olympic Games as promised.

With the present traffic load on the Bruce Highway already at over capacity this rail line was meant to take some of the load off that road as the Sunshine Coast population continues to experience very high rates of growth. Councils and governments are only too receptive to developers plans to squash more residential development into the area before any infrastructure is in place.

Remember voting is an important right and it is where you can express your feelings about the areas politicians - however, it also has consequences so making emotional outbursts can be dangerous.

Truthful Jones says

And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”

Truthful Jones tells us that his uncle Mick from Ireland visited him in Maleny. Uncle Mick took Mum and their son Pat to Brisbane for the first time. Mum had an appointment with a doctor, so the two men went off for a walk along Queen Street. As they passed a building, the door opened automatically. They decided to go in, having to dodge as the doors tried to close before they were properly inside.

“Gosh, Dad, I hope we can get back out again,” said Pat.

While in the auditorium, they watched as a woman, old and wrinkled, hobbled past. She made her way to a marble wall and a section of it mysteriously slid open. The woman stepped in and the wall closed behind her.

Dad and Pat stood watching as a counter above the door climbed from 0 to 20. It paused for a few moments and then counted back down to 0. There was a ‘ding’, the wall opened and a beautiful, spry young woman stepped out, walking brightly out of the building.

Dad stood, looking slackjawed at his son, Pat . Then he twigged!

“Son, go get your mother…! She needs to go into that room and come out just the same as that last lady!”

Moral: You can never put anything past those relatives who visited Truthful from Ireland can you!

Banks have always played an important part in ensuring that regional centres function efficiently by ensuring that bank branches provided financial services to rural people. Over the past three decades banking executives decided that rural branches probably are not as profitable proposition for the bank compared to other channels of banking so they started to close down branches to ensure more profits.

In recent years, Australia has witnessed a significant shift in the banking sector, characterised by the closure of numerous bank branches and a reduction in customer services. This transformation has been driven by various factors, including rapid technological advancements, changing customer preferences, and cost-cutting measures by financial institutions.

An analysis conducted by an Australian analytical research company, AreaSearch found that In the six years to 2023 more than 1,600 bank branches have closed and hundreds more regional ones are at risk. With each of those closures, especially in rural areas , not only does the community lose banking facilities, but it has a knock on effect as banking staff leave the area thus reducing the resilience of that community.

This article delves into the reasons behind Australian bank branch closures and explores the implications for customers.

Technological Advancements

One of the primary drivers behind the closure of bank branches in Australia is the rapid advancement of technology. The emergence of online banking, mobile applications, and digital payment systems has revolutionised the way people manage their finances. With the convenience and accessibility offered by these digital platforms, customers are increasingly opting for online transactions, reducing their reliance on physical bank branches. Consequently, financial institutions are realigning their services to adapt to

the digital era, resulting in branch closures and a shift towards digital-first banking models.

Changing Customer Preferences

The evolving preferences of customers have also played a significant role in the reduction of bank branches and customer services. Modern consumers, particularly the younger generation, prefer the convenience and flexibility of digital banking. They value the ability to conduct financial transactions at their own pace, anytime and anywhere. Consequently, banks are real reallocating their resources to cater to these changing preferences, investing in user-friendly digital interfaces, enhancing online security measures, and providing round-the-clock customer support. This shift in focus has resulted in a reduced emphasis on physical branch networks

Cost-Cutting Measures

Another contributing factor to the closure of bank branches and reduced customer services is the cost-cutting measures adopted by financial institutions. The banking industry faces intense competition and strives to improve operational efficiency and profitability. Closing physical branches, which incur significant overhead costs, is seen as a way to streamline operations and cut expenses. By shifting towards digital banking models, banks can achieve cost savings while still offering a wide range of services to customers.

Implications for Customers:

The closure of bank branches and reduced customer services in Australia have both positive and negative implications for customers.

Convenience and Accessibility

The proliferation of digital banking services has brought unprecedented convenience and accessibility to customers. With online platforms and mobile applications, customers can perform various banking tasks with just a few clicks, including fund transfers, bill payments, and account management. The availability of round-the-clock customer support further enhances convenience, as customers can seek assistance at any time. Additionally, digital banking eliminates the need to visit a physical branch, saving time and effort.

Decreased Personalised Service:

However, the closure of bank branches has resulted in a decreased level of personalised service for some customers. Face-to-face interactions with bank staff allowed customers to build relationships and receive tailored advice based on their unique financial circumstances. While online platforms offer self-service options and chatbots for basic inquiries, the absence of human interaction may be a disadvantage for customers seeking more complex financial guidance.

Access Challenges

Another concern arising from branch closures is the impact on customers who face access challenges, such as those living in remote areas or older

MAMA

individuals less familiar with technology. For these individuals, physical bank branches provided a vital lifeline for their banking needs. The closure of branches may lead to a lack of local banking services, making it difficult for some customers to access essential financial services.

Many older citizens do not have the luxury of sufficient knowledge to complete all their banking needs on line. As from late 2024 no bank will have the ability to use a bank cheque service, placing more strain on the more senior citizens. The cashless society in Australia is approaching much faster than most Aussies realises. Even for those who can complete their banking needs online there is always some tasks that require a personal presence at a banking establishment.

This lack of service at a local level is about to become even more severe as major banking establishments .

Although the major banks continue to report record profits they continue to shed staff in Australia favouring to use lesser paid staff in India and The Philippines where they outsource tasks to private companies such as Genpact, TATA Consulting Services and Concentrix…

Cybersecurity and Data Privacy

With the increased reliance on digital banking, cybersecurity and data privacy become crucial concerns. Customers must ensure they adopt robust security practices, such as using strong passwords and safeguarding personal information. Financial institutions also bear the responsibility of implementing robust security measures to protect customer data from cyber threats. Maintaining customer trust in the security and privacy of digital banking platforms is essential for the continued adoption of these services.

Conclusion

The closure of bank branches and the subsequent reduction in customer services in Australia reflect the transformative impact of technology and evolving customer preferences on the banking sector. While digital banking provides convenience and accessibility, there are implications to consider, such as reduced personalised service and access challenges for certain demographics. Striking a balance between digital innovation and maintaining the needs of all customers will be crucial for Australian banks as they navigate this changing landscape

Technical Advancements and Possible Future Directions of Banking

The rapid technological advancements in the banking sector have brought forth a paradigm shift in how financial services are delivered to customers. As Australia continues to embrace digital transformation, the future direction of banking holds promising possibilities. One potential direction is the continued advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning applications in banking operations. AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants could become even more sophisticated, providing customers with personalised financial advice, efficient issue resolution, and enhanced user experiences. Furthermore, blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionise the way transactions are conducted, making them more

secure, transparent, and efficient. As these technological innovations progress, financial institutions may explore the integration of decentralised finance (DeFi) platforms, enabling customers to access a broader range of financial services without relying on traditional banking intermediaries. Additionally, biometric authentication and identification methods may see further implementation, bolstering security and streamlining account access for customers. The Internet of Things (IoT) is yet another area with the potential to disrupt banking, as it enables seamless connections between devices and data sharing, leading to innovative payment systems and improved risk assessment.

The future of banking in Australia lies in leveraging these technological advancements to not only enhance customer experiences but also ensure the industry's resilience, security, and accessibility in an ever-evolving digital landscape .

What is the future of Australia’s Banking industry look like as we approach the 1930’s

The only thing for certain is change. Australian banks of 2030 will master data-driven customer experience across channels, underpinned by artificial intelligence and robotic automation. Consumers are becoming far more aware of the value of their personal data and the importance of keeping it safe and secure.

Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

Using a Trust to hold shares in a company With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

If you’re considering a Trust to organise the ownership of your company this series of posts discusses some issues to consider. Following on from the previous post where we looked at the Trust, fiduciary relationships, Beneficiaries and Trustees, now we delve a little deeper.

Discretionary trusts

Discretionary Trusts arise when the Trustee can choose which Beneficiaries receive the Trust property, and how much of the Trust property each Beneficiary gets. The discretion part lies with the Trustee having the option of splitting up the Trust property however they like.

Unit trusts

Unit Trusts in comparison are fixed, express Trusts unlike discretionary Trusts. Unit Trusts allocate the shares in the Trust property for Beneficiaries in the Trust agreement, rather than at the discretion of the Trustee

Each Beneficiary is allocated a unit in the trust property as stated in the Trust agreement.

Company ownership

Ownership of a company is allocated through shares. Shares account for a small percentage of a companies’ ownership. So, if

you start a company with a friend and you decide to divide ownership equally, you might decide to start your company by having 1000 shares available to be owned. You and your friend would each receive 500 shares, which you could sell. However, you can arrange it so that a Trustee owns the shares in the company.

Can a Trust Own Shares in a Company?

Legally, a Trust cannot own shares in a company as it is not a separate legal entity, rather a trust is simply a relationship. However, this changes when you consider the Trustee/s and what they can hold for Beneficiaries.

Trustees can own many types of property, including cash and property including company shares for the benefit of Beneficiaries. So, if you operate your own company, you can set up a trust to hold your shares. If you’re the Trustee, you can distribute the profits from the Trust to yourself.

As with all Trusts, a Trustee cannot be the sole Beneficiary which means you’ll want to appoint other Beneficiaries, such as family members to benefit from the Trust.

Did you Know?

That in February 1942, Australian Army Command issued a signal there were strong indications there might be ''enemy aircraft carrier operations'' on the ''North East Coast of Australia''. Just before the raid, USS Peary had a ''possible encounter'' with a Japanese submarine off Darwin.

Warnings, from a coast-watcher on Melville Island, which were ignored by the authorities, heralded an air attack on Darwin - Australia’s Pearl Harbour.

This resulted in nine ships in the harbour and two outside being sunk.

What's growing well in your garden just now? Isn't it great being able to pick fresh veggies & fruit from your own backyard. Here's some of my produce ready for picking grown from seedlings and seeds from our garden centre. Just some of the veggies that do well in a Queensland autumn are tomatoes, capsicums and eggplants; lettuce; radish; beetroot and silverbeet; beans; cucumber and zucchin. We also have al the accessories such as potting mix and sugar cane mulch to get your garden into a great shape for autumn.

There is nothing more rewarding than growing your own edibles, whether it be herbs, salad greens, vegetables or fruit. What you grow yourself will not only be a lot cheaper than the supermarket, but quite often be far more nutrient dense and as fresh as you can get.

Autumn is a fantastic time of year in South-East Queensland to get out into the garden and get growing. The cooler days and nights are kinder on the plants, and on you as well. Your garden should be in a sunny location that receives around 5-6 hours direct sun a day. Prepare the soil well by adding and digging through good quantities of compost-and rotted animal manure such as cow or chicken.

Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top”

“Back in Northern Territory” ….. continuing on with my mission!

How is this for bloody tough???

Whilst working in the workshop a few days ago I had to lower a hoist, Idid a check and thought it’d clear but unfortunately I misjudged it.

Unfortunately my Waterbottle, a Yeti that I got for Christmas from my Aunt stopped it going down and held all of nearly 2.5tons!!!

And it just bowed in the bloody lid, could use the flamin thing as a jack stand as they’re that tough , so if you want a tough as hell water bottle I’d say go with a @yeti because far out they’re strong as an elephant!!!

Keen to be back on the road shortly

Cheers to Cy and Phalen from Berry Springs Mechanical for coming over to help out with doin the oils on Slim in preparation for me leaving Darwin in the near future bound for Adelaide.

Drove him 20mins from camp to the workshop and found out the alternators buggered (pulled up at the workshop and the bastard was over 100° ) and I’ve got a few electrical issues to sort out but hopefully that won’t be too difficult to resolve, mostly from sitting for a couple months.

“Riverside Centre CR 1992.

prior to stage 2 being constructed along Obi Creek”

Today the Riverside Centre is almost the centre of business in Maleny. One would be forgiven for thinking that it had always been there - but no it is reasonably recent construction. Today there is another side to Riverside Shopping Centre and ir has become an important pat of Maleny’s shopping and commercial heart.

Notice now that there is a newer bridge crossing Obi Creek. Oh! Just how much Maleny has grown in the past 20 - 30 years. There is only one thing for certain and that is that the Maleny area will continue to grow - it is now too late to place gates at “the Ice Box” and turn people away from this great place to live!.
