“The Ekka is Coming - & so is COVID!” Chief health o cer, Dr John Gerrard said that it was unlikely a mask mandate would be introduced and that the waves of Covid would continue for some time, but said the Ekka would still go ahead. The Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) is Queensland's largest and most loved annual event, attracting on average 400,000 people. It is run by the RNA and staged at its original birthplace, the Brisbane Showgrounds’. The Ekka brings the country and city together for a true celebration of agriculture and will be staged between the 6th and 14th August. Public transport is one of the easiest and most ef cient ways to get to Ekka. Trains arrive and depart from Exhibition Station right in the middle of the Brisbane Showgrounds and dedicated Ekka buses stop close to entry gates. The rst 'Royal' Show was held in 1921, when the Association was granted the pre x under warrant from His Majesty King George V. The Ekka has since been held every year since with only four exceptions - in 1919 due to the

Covid Infections With infections remaining at around 8,000 per day in Queensland, the Ekka will follow relevant state and federal health guidelines to keep visitors safe. It is very important to maintain very high standards of hygiene. To assist there will be 300 hand washing basins and hand sanitising stations throughout the show-grounds. Spanish Flu epidemic, in 1942 when the grounds were used as a World War II staging depot and in 2020 and 2021 due the the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Always favourites of the show are the show bags. This year there are almost 400 different showbags to choose from, including 30 new bags. So, you can guarantee that, there’s something for everyone. Who remembers when show bags were once known as "sample bags" as they originally contained product samples of household goods such as soap or canned foods, produced by a single vendor or a group of vendors. Such sample bags were originally given away free of charge or carried only a nominal price in order to promote brand awareness. Today show bags cost from $2.00 through to $125.00 for the Lindt Box of Blocks. Enjoy the Ekka 2022.

Facial Recognition becoming more widespread

Maleny Shop Local News is free local Online Newsletter published online on the rst and third Friday of each month at: https://issuu.com/maleny-grapevinecommunity-news

In Queensland facial recognition is an emerging technology for personal security. A number of Australian major retailers have introduced this technology into their stores as an added level of security. Data is stored online for further use. Facial recognition is used when issuing identity documents and, most often, combined with other biometric technologies such as ngerprints thus preventing ID fraud and identity theft.

Why not bookmark this site and come back regularly to check out local group’s news and Maleny District Sporting results and news.

Now it is being used generally in our communities. There are also a number of businesses who are developing commercial use of this technology and it is only going to become more prevalent in our communities.

Published by Maleny Paint Supplies Pty. Ltd Shed 6/14 Lawyer Street, Maleny. 4552 Contact Phone 0754942002

Businesses such as The Good Guys, Kmart and Bunnings will be investigated over their use of the technology which captures images of shopper's faces and stores unique “faceprints”. They explain that they have been forced into using this technology to help in preventing shoplifting or other illegal actions in their stores.

Over the past 30 days there have been 12379 Page Impressions with a read time of 9 min 03 secs

More importantly, facial expressions can also be used to gauge reactions to advertising, sales and new products in-store and to connect speci c customers to products thus enabling the retailer to connect to those customers at a later date. A survey from CHOICE has found that 76% of Australians aren’t aware that their biometric and nancial data are being captured and used in this way. The disadvantages of this technology is just how secure the databases are kept and what happens when it is hacked.

Mr. Andrew Wallace Federal MP for Fisher “Federal Member for Fisher” Sunshine Coast Rail Upgrade from Beerwah to Maroochydore, via Caloundra and Kawana

What progress is being made on the Sunshine Coast Rail Upgrade from Beerwah to Maroochydore, via Caloundra and Kawana.

With the Sunshine Coast facing the challenge to accommodate an extra 200,000 people over the next 20 years it is important that reliable mass transport is provided. The previous Liberal National Government committed $1.6 billion to fund the project, covering 50% of its total cost. While the State Government remains silent on Sunshine Coast Rail, the new Minister for

Infrastructure is reported to have offered Federal Labor’s support to the project. The Queensland State Government remains silent on Sunshine Coast Rail. An earlier Labor state government promised trains would be in Caloundra by 2015. To date no action has been made on any constructions associated with this project.

Fundraising for Smart Pups Assistance Dogs Jared Ashcroft and friends are once more participating in the Bridge to Brisbane Fun Run 2022, this time in support of Smart Pups Assistance Dogs. The 2022 annual Sunday Mail Bridge to Brisbane on Sunday, 28 August 2022 and is Queensland's largest fun run. Smart Pups Assistance Dogs are specially trained to help children who have any disability falling within the Autism Spectrum. These dogs are trained to disrupt behaviour outside of the child's set behavioural pattern. In addition, Autism Assistance dogs can be trained to track the child should he or she wander away.

Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to their charity of choice. Thank you so much for your support!

In addition, Jared has organised another fun night of Drag Queen Bingo at the RSL on Saturday 20th August to assist the same charity, so plenty of time for you to book your tickets - the details are in the poster! Come on and let us all get behind Jared for this worthy cause.

Regardless of what advanced skills Autism Assistance Dogs might be trained to do, their primary purpose is to provide a best friend, con dant and playmate for a child who almost always has few friends. The lads would absolutely love it if you would be willing to contribute a donation to their fundraiser, so that they can help Smart Pups to continue doing the great work they do of improving the lives of children with autism in our community! Smart Pups receives no government funding so sponsorships and donations are needed to cover costs. You can support their efforts and help them reach their fundraising goal by making a secure online donation. After donating you can even leave a message of support on their page – it would be great for the lads to read these. Together we can make a big impact on race day! Here is the link for you: https://bridgetobrisbane.gofundraise.com.au/ page/JaredAshcroft-79301154

Who Gives A Crap? -

We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets? We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under ve dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Pro ts from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions Well, the Coaldrake Review into the in the Palaszczuk government’s integrity has been released, and unfortunately, the Premier was unable due to an existing appointment, even though it was known when the report was to be released. The Premier had to be dragged into this review by a team of horses and the States own Integrity Of cer as she tried to tell the people of Queensland that there were no problems with the government’s integrity. Now we know why! Matters raised in review paint a scathing picture of public service culture and an integrity system under stress in Queensland. Too often Ministers of the government are able to deny any knowledge of wrong doing because Departmental DirectorGenerals taking steps to prevent reports from reaching ministers so as to ensure that the minister could continue to plausibly deny knowledge of the matter. This leads to Ministers being not accountable for contentious matters, or even wrongdoing. The report also detailed a system whereby staff in ministerial of ces and more senior bureaucrats oversaw a culture of bullying and pressure on public service of cials to ensure that matters are dealt with for political expediency instead of in the best interests of the people of Queensland. Whilst Premier Ms Palaszczuk defended the role of lobbyists and their relationship with the government the review reveals new concerns about the overreach of ministerial staff and the in uence of political lobbyists. Lobbyists believe that the motto “greed is good” and anything that leads to excess pro ts at the expense of the people of Queensland is OK. The people of Queensland deserve nothing less than an enhancement of integrity bodies, real protection for whistleblowers, and strengthening of lobbying regulations which presently operate on the system of “whose wallet is biggest”. Part of the problem in respect to the government’s integrity is an identi able loss of capacity in the public service despite an ever increase in staf ng numbers, which has been accelerated by what is now an over-reliance on external contractors and consultants. Premier Palaszczuk expects that Professor Coldrake’s recommendations to be up and running by the end of the year or at the start of next year at the very latest.

Truthful Jones says

And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t” Truthful tells that his Scottish neighbour, Sandy was drinking at a pub all night last week (just having a Christmas drink). When he got up to leave, he fell flat on his face. He tried to stand again, but to no avail, falling flat on his face. He decided to crawl outside and get some fresh air to see whether that would sober him up. Once outside, he stood up and, sure enough, fell flat on his face. So, being a practical Scot, he crawled all the way home. When he got to the door, he stood up yet again, but fell flat on his face. He crawled through the door into his bedroom. When he reached his bed, he tried once more to stand upright. This time he managed to pull himself to his feet but fell into bed. He was sound asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. He woke the next morning to his wife shaking him and shouting, “So, ye’ve been oot drinkin’ as usual!” “Why would ye say that?” he complained innocently. “Because the pub called an’ ye left yer wheelchair there again!” Morale: Never try to put it over the missus. She always knows all!!!

Remember When?

Before TV who can remember the family sitting around the kitchen table playing monopoly? Monopoly was created In the 1930s, at the height of the Great Depression by a down-on-his-luck family man named Charles Darrow who invented a game to entertain his friends and loved ones. Selling or buying a property! Using a Trust to hold shares in a company With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny If you’re considering a Trust to organise the ownership of your company this series of posts discusses some issues to consider. Following on from the previous post where we looked at the Trust, duciary relationships, Bene ciaries and Trustees, now we delve a little deeper. Discretionary trusts Discretionary Trusts arise when the Trustee can choose which Bene ciaries receive the Trust property, and how much of the Trust property each Bene ciary gets. The discretion part lies with the Trustee having the option of splitting up the Trust property however they like. Unit trusts Unit Trusts in comparison are xed, express Trusts unlike discretionary Trusts. Unit Trusts allocate the shares in the Trust property for Bene ciaries in the Trust agreement, rather than at the discretion of the Trustee. Each Bene ciary is allocated a unit in the trust property as stated in the Trust agreement. Company ownership Ownership of a company is allocated through shares. Shares account for a small percentage of a companies’ ownership. So, if

you start a company with a friend and you decide to divide ownership equally, you might decide to start your company by having 1000 shares available to be owned. You and your friend would each receive 500 shares, which you could sell. However, you can arrange it so that a Trustee owns the shares in the company. Can a Trust Own Shares in a Company?

Trustees can own many types of property, including cash and property including company shares for the bene t of Bene ciaries. So, if you operate your own company, you can set up a trust to hold your shares. If you’re the Trustee, you can distribute the pro ts from the Trust to yourself.

As with all Trusts, a Trustee cannot be the sole Bene ciary which means you’ll want to appoint other Bene ciaries, such as family members to bene t from the Trust.

If you are considering a trust or company, please seek legal advice before taking action.

Legally, a Trust cannot own shares in a company as it is not a separate legal entity, rather a trust is simply a relationship. However, this changes when you consider the Trustee/s and what they can hold for Bene ciaries.

The 1980’s are said to be the “Decade of Change”

The early 1980s were the end of the high times which began in the 1960s. It became the decade of decadence. It was also the decade that “video killed the radio star”. The 1980’s saw the beginning of a battle for civil liberties in Queensland

There was a time in the 80s in Queensland when certain people were referred to as “The White Shoe Brigade” and was initially applied to car sales people who would prance around the car-yard dressed in purple pants with a shirt unbuttoned to the waist, large gold chain around the neck, oversized moustache, and of course the OBLIGATORY WHITE SHOES. warning under cover of darkness on November 7 1982.

5 June 1980, the rst ‘symbolic’ sod marking the commencement of the construction of the new Brisbane Airport is turned by Prime Minister Malcom Fraser. The total expenditure of building the new airport was approximately to be $425 million with completion in 1987.

To hold the Expo a major re-development at the South Brisbane sit turning it from a wharf and warehouse precinct into the Expo site. That area is now Southbank.

State Election 1986 Elections were held in Queensland on the 1st November 1986 to elect the 89 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. It followed a redistribution which increased the number of seats in the Assembly from 82 to 89. The Nationals secured a majority in their own right, with 49 seats.

World Expo ‘88

The Maleny area had a number of close contacts with Expo 88. Conondale local, Premier of Queensland, Mike Ahern assisted the Queen with the opening - Maleny Rotary Club members adopted the Soviet Union Pavilion workers and hosted them at Maleny on occasions, and also the Shaftesbury Campus which now displays an original Expo Sign. A number of Maleny residents also volunteered at the Expo.

The 1980’s saw the coming of age of the “White Shoe Brigade”

The Gold Coast, a coastal city in the State of Queensland, is a metropolitan region south of Brisbane. This area saw a signi cant boom in popularity which grew in starting in the 1980’s when the “White Shoe Brigade” came to town. Expo 88 attracted more than 15,760,000 visitors who bought tickets worth A$175 million.

personal guarantee on a loan for a nickel-mining project. His debts reportedly totalled $1.8 billion at the time. Unfortunately, many of those corporations he raided went bankrupt or spent decades in nancial dif culties or were sold to international companies and were lost to Australia forever.

Alan Bond , born 22nd April 1938 and died on the 5th June 2015 was an English-born Australian businessman noted for his high-pro le and often corrupt business dealings. These included his central role in the WA Inc scandals of the 1980s, and what was at the time the biggest corporate collapse in Australian history and also for his criminal conviction that saw him serve four years in prison.

Mike Gore moved to the Gold Coast in 1972 and became involved in a dealership in Japanese cars. Diversifying his business interests into importing and selling power boats and yachts, in 1982 Gore planned a boat-building venture with Hong Kong's Cheoy Lee Shipyards. Sanctuary Cove, Australia’s rst gated community and master-planned resort became Gore’s signature achievement.

He was also the founder of Bond University, Gold Coast, Australia. In 1987, Bond paid $1 billion to purchase the Australia-wide Channel Nine television network from Kerry Packer's PBL. He also had a controlling interest in Bell Resources which he later went to jail for defrauding that company of $1.2billion.

In the end he owed $25 million from three Australian court judgments against him, and moved to Vancouver, Canada, in 1992 for a nancial exile that enabled him to avoid his debtors.

The ’80’s had their own fashion trends. “Maybe not today’s taste”

There’s no doubt about it — the 1980s made getting dressed in the morning just a little more fun. Clothing was designed to make a big statement, and designers were playing the fashion wildcard like never before. Subtlety was out, bigger was better, and everything was loud and proud. And who could forget Christopher Skase. began his career as a stockbroker, but soon became a nance journalist instead. He then purchased Qintex, a small Tasmanian company. By the late 1980s, the Qintex group was worth A$1.5 billion. Skase owned ve resorts as well as interests in the Seven television network and the Brisbane Bears football club. Skase had begun obtaining and moving money into foreign bank accounts in July 1989, creditors moved in, and Qintex collapsed. Skase was more than $700 million in debt. Skase subsequently ed Australia to end up on the Spanish island of Majorca. The money was never recovered. This was just another sad tale of the “White Shoe Brigade” eecing innocent Aussies.

Fashion in the 1980’s The 1980s was possibly the boldest decade in modern fashion history, a magical era of over-thetop silhouettes, teased perms and saturated colours. They were the years of puffed shoulders and power suits, ashy skirts and spandex leggings, velour, leg warmers and voluminous parachute pants.

Most of these fashions were popularised by the movie “Flashdance” which was released in 1983 and the American soapie “Dynasty”. For men it was dad jeans and denim that were a popular casual style, as were preppy polo shirts, sweaters, and pastel slacks. Add in short shorts, tight tees, and athletic wear to round out the leisurewear trends. Also popular were leather jackets, polo shirts, Oxford shirts, and turtlenecks.

The beginning of the personal computer

The World Wide Web (WWW), commonly known as the Web, was still to become the world's dominant form of communication. The introduction of the rst personal computers in the late 1980’s brought forward that well-known sound of the “dial-up tone”. Shop Locally & Shop with a Friend 18

The end of the 1980’s saw personal computers becoming more popular

Home computing proved to be so popular it seemed like every company wanted a slice of the digital pie, with model after model released on an annual basis, all vying for dominance in the ultracompetitive marketplace. The rst computer was designed by the Chinese for business use and it was the Australian National and it was made for mathematical calculations. It was not until 1991 that the from the 1930’s, mainly for tasks such as breaking world wide web as we know it today, more or less codes during war time. was invented. Today computers continue to be designed primarily for mathematical calculations. The computers that NASA used to send Armstrong to the moon were primitive and about as powerful as a Commodore 16 which would be well known by gamers of the 1970’s and 1980’s. In 1981 IBM invented the rst personal computer and it was used as a glori ed typewriter that could store, modify and print text. It had no hard drive and storage capacity was on oppy disks was limited to ½ to 1¼ megabytes. Monitors were large CRTs and only single coloured, orange or green. Also in 1981 Australia connects to the Internet, mainly as a form of sending emails, but connection was limited to governments and it was not until 1989 that the internet was rst turned on

The rst computer from Apple was the classic Apple Mac which debuted in the 80s. Computers in schools was a new addition to the classroom during the late 1980s.

Popular Movies during the 1980’s Many people regard the 1980s as a golden decade in lms. Many of these movies gained staunch followers, movies such as Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam movie, “Full metal Jacket” and the 1984 movie “Ghostbusters”, and who could forget; “The Gods Must Be Crazy”. A drop in both attendance rates and frequency in the mid-1980s is usually attributed to the upsurge in video hire in Australia from 1982. On television we were watching a collection of stars Paul Hogan, Dame Edna Everage, Nicole Kidman, Jimmy Barnes, Sigourney Weaver, MP Linda Burney, Peter Russell-Clarke. Everything we watched leaned towards greed was good, hair was big and colours were bright.

The end of the 1980’s saw the holding of the Fitzgerald Inquiry.

The Fitzgerald Inquiry changed Queensland and started a new future for Queensland. Depending who you ask - maybe for the better or maybe for the worst. In the December 1989 State election brought the Australian Labor Party to power for the rst time since 1957. Some even say that nothing really changed, only the captain of the ship!

Fitzgerald Inquiry In May 1987 Acting Queensland Premier Bill Gunn ordered a commission of inquiry after the media reported possible police corruption involving illegal gambling and prostitution. Tony Fitzgerald QC was appointed to lead the "Commission of Inquiry into Possible Illegal Activities and Associated Police Misconduct. It became known as the Fitzgerald Inquiry. Initially expected to last about six weeks, the inquiry spent almost two years conducting a comprehensive investigation of long-term systemic political corruption and abuse of power in Queensland with sittings held on 238 sitting days. The 630-page Fitzgerald report was tabled in Parliament in July 1989. It made over 100 recommendations. Whilst the Inquiry changed the policing and political landscape in Queensland and across Australia some say that nothing really changed for the better.

Gateway Bridge Brisbane Construction on the Gateway Bridge over the lower reaches of the Brisbane River commenced on 5 June 1980. It was of cially commissioned on 11 January 1986. On this day 200,000 people crossed the bridge by foot as part of the opening activities. It provided three lanes in each direction and was operated as a toll bridge. In 1986 the 1,627 metre box girder bridge carried an average of 12,500 vehicles per day. The bridge has a navigational clearance of 55 metres allowing cruise ships to berth at Portside Pier at Hamilton.

Integrity and accountability in public of ce is still a topic of extreme concern today with successive governments apparently unable to reach that high standard.

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top” Look at the latest addition to the trailer A bit of an explosive idea!!!!

Joe & Ros Grace of Northern Metalwork in Kununurra WA are creators of handcrafted welded steel works. They have mounted an amazing piece of steel artwork on my trailer. Just how good is this piece of steel art of my hereo, Slim Dusty’s head.

Thank you so much to Joe & Ros Grace for a one in a million momento of my trip. By a country mile it’s My favourite Slim Dusty tribute. You too can get your favourite artwork cut in steel. "People ring up and give me the basic things they want, the basic scene, and I can picture it all in my head because I've been there.” said Joe Grace. He continued that he then creates a freehand drawing of the scene before converting it to metal. His metal creations now adorn gates, entrances and the living room walls. Contact them or see more of their work at: https://www.facebook.com/Northern-Metalwork-Joe-RosGrace-166019403433259/photos/

So possibly dumb but awesome idea, saw this WW2 era aircraft bomb for sale on Facebook and thought to myself, hmm that’s interesting I wonder if I turned it into a donation tin/ tailgater joke. I was thinking about putting it on the front of slims bullbar or on the back of the trailer on a slide mount with a pin to lock it in a piece of square box steel it weighs about 10kg and is a meter tall (I’d Chuck 10kg of weight out of my trailer to compensate and keep people happy) I think it could be a big draw card for donations and as a way to scare the living bejesus out of tailgaters. Would have a openable lockable hatch cut into it and a slot for notes and coins to be emptied each night and left open, plus I’d put a lockable pin to hold it in place so no one could steal it. I recon it’d be a popular draw card for people to come up and see/donate, plus it’d allow people to make donations even if I wasn’t around.
