Would you drink re-cycled water?

…maybe it will have to come to that!

Water is possibly the most important that we as a modern community must have. No water - no life. Most of the world's freshwater -- about 2.4 million cubic miles (10 million cubic kilometers) of it -- is contained in underground aquifers. The rest is treated.

As the Queensland population continues to rise so quickly it is causing a number of problems that we don’t consider too often.

We know about the growing problems with supplying housing to house many of our lower economic people, but there is one thing that we must have for all of our people. Water is the essence of life. No living thing on Earth can survive long without it.

needs must be seriously considered immediately. Already recycled water is being used in Queensland, but only for industrial uses and irrigation purposes. What most people don’t realise is that in real terms we are already drinking recycled water. Water that has been used already and them returned to water treatment works through the sewerage system and then

One of the sources of water being considered is recycled water. How would Queenslanders feel about drinking re-cycled water?

system and thus the cycle begins again.

The Queensland Water Security Program generally plans for providing the region's drinking water over the next 30 years, including during times of drought and flood.

Queensland does already have a desalination plant which is situated on the southern Gold Coast, however it is very expensive to operate. The Queensland government is considering building a second plant to supplement the water supply.

With the Bureau of Meteorology predicting drier periods for the foreseeable future our water

treated to a high standard and then returned to local creeks and waterways, many above water storage dams thus augmenting the already stored water which is then treated again and again returned to the distribution

How would you feel about drinking treated water? It is a question that various governments are going to have to deal with in the very near future. There are technologies that can treat and recycle water to very high standards.

It was twenty-three years ago this week that the world was stunned when a unique act of terrorism was committed when the twin towers of the World Trade Centre were destroyed when American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767 was flown into the North Tower. This was followed soon after by United Airlines Flight 175, a Boeing 767 was flown into the South Tower of the World Trade Centre. Following this American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757 was flown into the West side of The Pentagon

Passengers on board Flight 93 begin a revolt and moved against the hijackers in an attempt to take back the plane. This plane crashed at Shanksville southeast of Pittsburgh in Somerset County killing all onboard. Both Trade Centres subsequently collapsed. Over 3000 people died that day as a result of this terrorism act. Thus the world changed significantly in just one day!

As a result U.S. Pres. George W. Bush declared a global “war on terrorism,” and lengthy wars in Afghanistan and Iraq followed. This war on terror involved Australia and Britain. Immediately security measures around the world were tightened considerably, especially at airports. No country was exempt. Let us all remember all of those who died on that fateful day and all the many tens of thousands more who die as a direct consequence of that act of terror and the consequences thereof.

Council Pet Registrations “on the way”

The Sunshine Coast Council pet registration and renewal year for dog and cat registrations starts the 1st October and expires 30 September annually.

Come on and tell me you didn’t have something like this in the 1930’s - 40’s and even into the 1950’s.

In those days they were called a wireless.

They started to become popular in the late 1920’s.

Council issues a renewal notice in early September for each registered cat and dog requiring annual renewal. Payments are due by 30 September.

Failure to renew your registration for a cat or dog requiring annual registration may result in an onthe-spot fine being issued.

Mr. Andrew Wallace Federal MP for Fisher Federal Member for Fisher

Voice to Parliament Vote draws near!!

On 14 October, Australians will decide whether or not to support a change to our constitution which will enshrine an Indigenous Voice to Parliament and the Government. You know that I've had a bit to say about this - as have thousands of Australians right across the country. And over 3,200 Fisher residents have had their say through my online survey.

What I LOVE about our country is that sound minds can come to agree or disagree on issues of national character such as these. This is a freedom for which we ought to be very grateful.

Our democracy is stronger for debate and discourse, challenging though those conversations might be. It is imperative upon all of us to respectfully and thoughtfully have our say. On this particular issue, one way or another, the future and function of our democracy will be impacted.

The question we are being asked to answer represents the most significant change to our Constitution in 122 years. I am encouraging all residents to think about the proposal, and to vote with their conscience.

Our nation is confronting geopolitical and economic challenges which are unprecedented and potentially catastrophic.

This is YOUR decision - not the decision of celebrities, politicians or the big end of town. This is YOUR constitution - it is the foundation of our democracy and Government. This is YOUR future to shape.

Gardner’s Falls to undergo safety review

The popular Gardner’s Falls waterfalls area is to undergo a safety review by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. This review comes after a number of serious accidents, including a number of deaths involving swimmers in popular swimming hole.

The review is underway to improve the safety of visitors to a popular but unpredictable hinterland destination.

Visitors can walk along a section of the Obi Obi Creek to a series of small waterfalls and a swimming hole. Gardner’s Falls is a Maleny hidden gem on Obi Creek off Landsborough Road.

The Sunshine Coast Council is calling on the community to share their ideas on ways to improve signage at Gardners Falls, in Maleny, to help encourage safe behaviours.

The goal is for visitors to better understand the risks at this location and be informed on how to manage their own safety.

Local Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston said; “Council was trying to get the balance right between helping people manage their own safety in this location and preserving the

beauty visitors enjoyed. We’ve put forward some new signage ideas as a starting point for discussion to better communicate the risks of visiting and swimming at the falls”

Other work underway to improve safety at the falls includes a crossing to the Maleny Community Precinct trail, minor amenity upgrades and access improvements for emergency services during an emergency.

Share your ideas on the draft signage before 5pm Friday October 13, 2023 at:

https://haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ signage-gardners-falls-maleny

This project is being done in partnership with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Queensland Police Service and Queensland Ambulance Service.

Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

Maleny Hospital Auxiliary Spring Fair another success!

The Maleny Hospital Auxiliary 2023 "A Springtime Affair" which was held at the Maleny Showgrounds on Wednesday the 13th September was a huge success and a lot of fun!. This year’s theme was “nursing through the ages”.

All the funds raised went towards supporting The Maleny Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital. The hospital provides a 24-hour emergency centre as well as an

bed for partners and family to sleep close by whilst a person is receiving treatment.

Hospital Auxiliary President, Mrs Diana Bryce said “Everybody is grateful that the hospital is here and we must keep it, so we will keep supporting it.”

The day included a fashion parade sponsored by Flaunt with shoes from Imelda’s and modelling of old and new nursing uniforms. The highly starched uniforms were a bit different to those more comfortable ones worn today. Many tales were also shared about some of the antics that went on in the old Maleny hospital and they would have brought much laughter now that so much time has passed..

Purifier in Australia

Air pollution is a pressing global issue, including here in Australia and it's not limited to the outdoors. The EPA states that indoor air can be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Air purifiers help combat this by filtering out pollutants, allergens, and other harmful particles, creating a cleaner and healthier environment both at home and at work.

Air purifiers eliminate common allergens like dust, pollen, and pet dander, which are typical triggers for allergy flair-ups.

Air purifiers can help minimise the spread of airborne illnesses by capturing bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens.

About Liquid Glass Colourants

It is commonly used by local woodcrafters to fill holes in timber, but can also be used in concrete or for decoupage applications. This table in the photo was was treated using Liquid Glass to fill in the imperfections in the wood and then coated in Northane for a fantastic finish .

It is becoming more popular for use in making jewellery. You can preserve pressed, dried or fresh flowers by adding several coats of liquid glass to them. You can then create jewellery from these preserved pieces or add them to scrapbooks or keepsakes.

Another use is to coat pressed flower art work after it is complete.

It is now Magpie breeding season

“They are protective of their young”

Magpie breeding season has begun across the Sunshine Coast and residents are asked to remain tolerant of this protected and iconic native animal when walking or riding near Magpie nests. Please do not throw things at magpies or chase them. Stay away from their nests and young, especially birds that are learning to fly. Magpies were very clever, remembering faces in their neighbourhood.

Picking up a fledgling bird, a young bird that has just left the nest could be seen by the parent bird as threatening its young and it may trigger swooping behaviour.

Magpies will often stay in one area for up to 20 years and can identify individuals by their facial features, even recognising all the people in their neighbourhood.

When they walk around with their head tilted, they are actually listening for prey and are capable of hearing earthworms and larvae moving underground.

Magpies see cats, dogs and other magpies as intruders - it’s not just people they swoop. Research shows that only about 10 per cent of breeding males will actually swoop.

Unlike other members of the Artamidae family, magpies walk along the ground, they do not hop.

Magpies are extraordinary parents, looking after their young for up to two years. They occur

over much of Australia, often live in small groups of up to five individuals (in Queensland), and take up territories that include nesting and roosting trees and grassy feeding areas.

Swooping begins once the eggs are hatched and ends once the chicks have left the nest, which is about six to eight weeks.

Living with swooping magpies

If there is a swooping magpie in your neighbourhood, take these simple measures to protect yourself and others:

walk through the magpie’s territory quickly - don’t run; take a different route next time; protect your head with an umbrella, hat or helmet; wear glasses to protect your eyes; watch the magpies while walking away quickly from the areamagpies are less likely to swoop if you look at them; attach a flag or streamers on a stick to your bike or backpack; and walk your bike through the magpie’s territory - don’t ride. Remember they have survival instincts just like you and I

When you see male magpies defending their territory, understand they are merely defending their young.

Don’t act aggressively towards them as they have a very long memory, and this will just encourage further defensive behaviour in the future.

What can you do if a magpie swoops at you?

Stay calm, protect your face and walk away quickly. On the other hand Magpies can become very good friends. They do learn which nearby humans do not constitute a risk. They will remember someone who was good to them. They will even bring their babies for friendly humans to see.

Magpies have shown the ability to make and use tools, imitate human speech, grieve, play games, and work in teams.

Magpies are protected under the Nature Conservation Act. Penalties for injuring magpies vary based on circumstances. Take a moment to appreciate the complex carolling of one of Australia’s most iconic birds—our humble magpie.

The Rotary Club of Maleny are delighted to announce the 2023 Maleny Lift the Lid Walk for Mental Health and invite all local residents, visitors and their dogs to join us on the morning of Sunday 10th September 2023.

The walk and talk format is deliberately not a race, but an opportunity to get locals together in a fun way to raise awareness of the serious mental health issues we face in all areas of our communities, schools, homes and workplaces.

Now more than ever, we need to break down the stigma that continues to plague our society so that people are more comfortable to discuss and seek help for their mental health issues.

As the sole benefactor, 100% of funds raised from the Lift the Lid Walk will go to supporting vital Australian Rotary Health research into Mental Health.

“Watch Out”

…there are snakes about

Spring has hardly sprung but the snakes are already about and Queensland’s snake catchers are braced for a busy season. A man has already died after he had removed a snake, believed believed to be an eastern brown from being coiled around a friend’s ankle at a park near Mackay. The King brown snake (Pseudechis australis) is a highly venomous snake found over most of mainland Australia

A second man was also bitten and was taken to the Mackay Base Hospital and has since been discharged.

If bitten by a snake the medical advice is, if possible lie down and stay as still as possible until help arrives. This will assist in slowing the movement of venom throughout the body.

Because it’s so hot, they’re trying to find somewhere cool and inside your home is a great place for them. Also it is now snake breeding season had also started early which is also increasing snake activity.

Another snake problem for pet owners is concern for r their pets. keeping pets indoors and not roaming around at night also assists to minimises the risk of snake attack on pets.

service.

Can you remember exactly where you were when the attacks against New York City and Washington, D.C on September 11th, 2001? I am sure that most of us can.

In many ways, 9/11 reshaped how almost all citizens of the world think about war and peace, their own personal safety and their fellow citizens. And today, the violence and chaos in a country half a world away brings with it the opening of an uncertain new chapter in the post-9/11 era for all countries. Never again will the world be so unsuspecting!

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, are without question the defining moment of the 21 century and the effects are still being felt.

Following the attacks on the United States of America on September 11th, 2001, non-state actors gained prominence on the global stage. Terrorist organisations, militias, and insurgent groups capitalised on power vacuums and weak governance structures in conflictridden regions. ISIS, in particular, emerged as a significant threat, seizing territory and inspiring global terror attacks.

The wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and subsequent conflicts in the Middle

Saturday, September 11, 2021, marked the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the largest terrorist attack in history. On that Tuesday morning, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four American commercial flights destined for the West Coast and intentionally crashed them into the towers of the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.

East led to humanitarian crises and mass displacements. Millions of people became refugees, seeking safety and stability in neighbouring countries and beyond.

efforts to combat radicalisation. Multinational efforts like the Global Counterterrorism Forum emerged to facilitate cooperation among nations, mainly western countries in countering extremist ideologies and networks. The global economy was not immune to the changes triggered by 9/11. Increased defence spending, the cost of military engagements, and the economic repercussions of terrorism disrupted global

It must be remembered that this was the time before cell phones and social media platforms, where news travelled quickly inside classrooms and around the globe. Today, it is impossible to conceive a situation where something as big the 9/11 attacks happens and people around the world don’t know instantly what has occurred. News spread quickly through digital websites, social media platforms, mobile calls, and instant messages

These crises strained international institutions and exposed the limitations of the global response to humanitarian emergencies.

The post-9/11 world saw a shift in counterterrorism strategies, with a focus on intelligencesharing, international cooperation, and

The world changed irrevocably after 9/11, as the attacks gave rise to a new era characterised by heightened security measures, surveillance, and the global War on Terror.

The consequences extended far beyond American borders, where the attacks took place, impacting international relations, regional stability, and the balance between security and civil liberties.

While significant strides have been made in addressing the challenges posed by 9/11, the legacy of that day continues to shape our world in complex and enduring ways, reminding us of the indelible impact of one fateful morning two decades ago.

onward mass dissemination by the media. It helps groups to radicalise and recruit fighters and financiers. It also allows recruits to organise and network in the field and maintain ties when they return to their countries of origin.

It is imperative that countries use their security enterprise to better mitigate and defend against dynamic threats, minimise risks, and maximise the ability to respond and recover from attacks and disasters of all kinds.

The scale and audacity of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, spurred sweeping changes in the way the United States, its partners, and adversaries used the machinery of state and technology to respond to threats.

In contrast Al Qaeda, under Bin Laden, was much more cautious about empowering its local franchises to engage in self-governance. Al Zawahari, very wisely, because of the competition from ISIS in particular, has pursued that route also.

There are a number of differing ISIS societies. ISIS-K is mainly comprised of Pakistani and Afghan fighters who had essentially split off from the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban in recent years—mainly disaffected members of the two different Talibans.

Since that infamous day all countries have had to upgrade their security enterprises to better mitigate and defend against dynamic threats, minimise risks, and maximise the ability to respond and recover from attacks and disasters of all kinds.

With the arrival of the new century once again a countries security is being tested, this time through the disruption of a countries business and government enterprises by digital interruption.

The internet has been critical to the various terrorist group’s success. It allows for unfettered communicate unfiltered to the rest of the world, for

https://issuu.com/Maleny-Grapevine-Community-News

No longer is it necessary to physically carry out attacks similar to that of 9/11, it is possible to do as much damage to a country from without by digitally manipulating a countries utilities such as electricity, water, transport systems along with a myriad of other destructive procedures = all from the comfort of an unknown bedroom somewhere more than a “half a world away”.

It has been suggested through research by the United States State Department that Australia is 'the biggest per capita contributor of foreign jihadists to ISIS’.

This will continue to be of major concern for successive Australian governments well into the future.

Being a part of a community can make us feel as though we are a part of something greater than ourselves.

Juvenile crime is presently running uncontrolled in many parts of Queensland and much of this crime is of a violent nature. It is causing many people in Queensland to feel unsafe, even in their own homes.

Solving this crimewave will be one of the major problems facing the Palaszczuk government as it heads towards the 2024 state election. How will it handle juvenile crime.

There is only one thing sure about juvenile crime and that is that handling juvenile crimes is a complex and sensitive issue for governments worldwide. The approach to addressing juvenile delinquency has evolved over the years, reflecting changing societal values, research findings, and legal frameworks, but in present society there has to be significant shifts in thinking. On longer will society sit back and allow governments to relied heavily on punitive measures, such as incarceration. Research has shown that this approach often leads to higher rates of recidivism and fails to address the underlying causes of delinquency. This does not mean that there is not a place for non-incarceration at all. Incarceration in places such as juvenile detention centres where proper diversion programs, which aim to provide counselling, education, and vocational training to help young offenders reintegrate into society successfully. Teaching skills that lead to improving a young offender’s life are important. This includes the teaching or respect and responsibility of self.

Prevention should be a crucial aspect of government efforts in addressing juvenile crimes. And whilst many governments have recognised the importance of early intervention to prevent at-risk youth from becoming involved in criminal activities parents too have a major responsibility in the prevention of juvenile crime. Unfortunately, for one reason or another many parents refuse or simply neglect to carry out their responsibilities towards their children. This merely makes the problem worse, it simply will not go away by ignoring it.

It is important that at that stage governments step in and implement age appropriate programs and initiatives aimed at providing support and resources to at-risk youth and their families. These programs could include after-school programs, mentoring, and community outreach efforts, which can help divert young people away from criminal behaviour.

The proper incarceration of a juvenile offender is an expensive business, but doing nothing or taking punitive measures only in the long term is more expensive. Society must realise that some steps that might be seen as limiting a persons t is important that governments aim to reduce juvenile delinquency and create safer communities for all.

Truthful tells us that he recently went for a bike ride with a friend who was riding his Harley along a Victorian beach road when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, God said, "Because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish."

The biker pulled over and said, "Build a bridge to Tasmania so I can ride over anytime I want."

God replied, "Your request is materialistic; think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking; the supports required reaching the bottom of the Pacific and the concrete and steel it would take! I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of something that could possibly help mankind."

The biker thought about it for a long time. Finally, he said, "God, I wish that I, and all men, could understand women. I want to know how she feels inside, what she's thinking when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing's wrong, why she snaps and complains when I try to help, and how I can make a woman truly happy."

God replied: "You want two lanes or four on that bridge?"

Even the “Good Lord” knows his boundaries when it comes to allocating his miracles!

Guarantees - Major Points!

There are two types of guarantees:

• A first-party guarantee where the loan is guaranteed by security in the form of an asset; or

• A third-party guarantee where someone else guarantees the loan.

What is the role of the Guarantor?

A guarantee will provide that should a borrower be unable for any reason to make the loan repayments, the guarantor will make those payments.

So before deciding to become a guarantor, you should be confident that the borrower can meet the loan repayments now and, in the future, and that you are comfortable with your relationship with the borrower. You should also ensure that you are in a financial position to cover

the loan repayments if at any time the borrower cannot meet the repayments.

This is critical, particularly if you are securing the guarantee with property. This could restrict your ability to borrow funds in the future tying up equity you hold in your property until the loan is repaid in full.

Guarantees can be for fixed amounts or what are termed “all monies”.

A guarantee for a fixed amount provides far more certainty compared to an all monies guarantee, and the guarantee should clearly state the exact amount of money you will owe in the worst case scenario that the borrower is unable to repay the loan.

To wrap up our very brief overview of guarantees we leave you with these final points.

How can Easton Lawyers help?

If you need legal advice as a guarantor, borrower, or lender or if you would just like to have a us look over the terms and conditions of your document, contact Easton Lawyers on 07 5494 3511 to arrange a time to discuss your needs or by email at:

reception@eastonlawyers.com.au

Web site: eastonlawyers.com.au

If you give a guarantee you agree to repay the entire loan, and that includes all fees, charges, and interest, should the borrower default on the loan.

If you are providing security for the guarantee (e.g. a house or some other substantial asset) you should review any financial history between the lender and the borrower, if available and if now review the financial history of the borrower to see if at any time the borrower has been in default of any debts.

In some circumstances, a guarantor may be able to withdraw a guarantee before the loan has been provided.

What's growing well in your garden just now? Isn't it great being able to pick fresh veggies & fruit from your own backyard. Here's some of my produce ready for picking grown from seedlings and seeds from our garden centre.

Just some of the veggies that do well in a Queensland autumn are tomatoes, capsicums and eggplants; lettuce; radish; beetroot and silverbeet; beans; cucumber and zucchin.

September sees temperatures climb. Destructive pests like fruit fly & cabbage white butterfly

suddenly reappear, ready to wreak havoc. Crops like lettuce, large tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage and beans also start to suffer in this weather. We also have al the accessories such as potting mix and sugar cane mulch to get your garden into a great shape.

Mid-September can see a ‘hot blast’, where we get a week or two of full summer heat & humidity, often without rain, which can cook tender young seedlings before they have a chance to get established.

Cherry tomatoes will grow from now and will usually go right through summer too.

On the wall was this copy of a Northern Territory Clock - photo left.. Everything is controlled by NT - you can see what I mean.

I have now left Daly Waters and moved onto Larrimah where I pulled into The Pink Pub. Whilst there I checked out some of the NT WW11 history at the Larrimah Museum.
