“Mary Cairncross turns 80!”

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a remnant rainforest and many of the trees you see today are hundreds of years old.

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is very lucky to have such a wonderful assett within their community. It came about by the forethought of Mary Thynne, whose maiden name was Cairncross.

The land was transferred to the Council through a Deed of Trust, with the aim of preserving the rainforest in perpetuity, and honouring their mother Mary Thynne.

It was not until after the forming of the Maleny Rotary Club in 1959 that a Rotary project in collaboration with the Landsborough Shire Council that the formation of the park as we know it today began.

It stands today as a memorial to her a passionate environmental credentials. The Cairncross family which included three sisters, Mary, Bessie and Mabel came to live in Maleny during the 1930’s.

On 11 December 1966, Elizabeth “Bessie” Thynne donated a further ve acres to the Landsborough Shire Council.

The Thynne family bought land in 1902, 790 acres which was part of the original Isaac Burgess selection, which included the now Mary Cairncross Park.

On Wednesday October 20th, 2021 between 12md and 2p.m. there will a celebratory picnic in the park to celebrate the 80th birthday of this precious gift.

In October 1941, 100 acres was transferred through a Deed of Trust to the then Landsborough Shire Council by Mary's three daughters Elizabeth, Mabel and Mary Thynne.

Qld Governor, Sir Henry Able Smith being led through the park by local 9 year old Murray Mears following the of cial opening of the park on December 12th, 1960.

The picnic will include a talk by local historian, Jeanette Nobes. Bring your own food and drink and picnic in style. Everyone is welcome - just turn up and enjoy the fun.

Community’s thoughts on Climate Change

A collaborative approach to respond to climate change on the Sunshine Coast is the focus of a new pilot project which plans for current and emerging climate risks.

Sunshine Coast Council has received a Local Government Association of Queensland grant to pilot the rst phase of the ‘Queensland Climate Resilient Councils Climate Risk Management Framework’ – an approach to assist local governments address climate risk now and into the future. This project would see the council working with industry, community leaders and state government agencies to identify climate risks and ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt and identify opportunities. To get started on this important project, Council is seeking input through a survey to establish a baseline understanding of the community’s collective thoughts on climate change. The survey results will inform the creation of a toolkit to inform the community on ways to mitigate and adapt to projected climate risks in the future. The project encourages a collaborative approach to this important issue and working on a regional scale provides opportunities to manage climate risk holistically across the two local government areas. The project will help our communities be better prepared and ultimately stronger. Timely action would put our region in the best possible position to respond to the growing threats to our lifestyle, economy and environment. The Council wants to hear from the community to make sure community input is captured. By the end of this pilot project it is hoped to have laid an important foundation to develop a broader roadmap and climate response plan for our region into the areas future. The QCRC program is a partnership between the Department of Environment and Science and the Local Government Association of Queensland which is delivering services and products to Queensland local governments to increase their capability to take actions to mitigate and adapt to climate risk. To complete the survey by Sunday, October 24, 2021head to council’s website https://sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell. M.P. State Member for Glasshouse

Joyce Newton OAM Bursary Winner Announced Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, has today announced the 2021 winner of the annual Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary. Mt Mee local, Miss Mikayla Crouch, who studied at Mt Mee State School and is currently completing Grade 12 at Pine Rivers State High School, has taken out the $1,000 bursary. Miss Crouch was one of three successful applicants interviewed by a panel consisting of Mr Powell, Mrs Newton’s daughter – Jennifer Tunley – and the Sunshine Coast Business Council’s Sandy Zubrinich. “Mikayla epitomises the spirit in which the bursary was established,” stated Mr Powell. “Joyce was not only my friend, but an amazing community advocate, who sadly passed away in 2018 from Motor Neurone Disease. She lived and breathed community. She was passionate about agriculture, about learning, about our future generations and about civic society. And Mikayla has demonstrated a similar passion!”

Raised on a Mt Mee dairy farm, Miss Crouch is keen to pursue a career in agriculture and environmental sustainability – to show the world that farmers love and care for their environment. She’s already paired the two, raising money to protect the Glossy Black Cockatoo across the D’Aguilar Range. Mikayla has also had an incredibly successful academic and cultural experience at Pine Rivers High School – winning numerous awards and serving, this year, as School Captain. “She’s just like mum!” commented Mrs Tunley. “She’s con dent, compassionate, informed and clearly has an exuberance and love of life that will take her far. Mum would be so proud to see someone of Mikayla’s calibre awarded this bursary.” As an indication of just how tight the competition was between this year’s three nalists, the panel has decided to award two runnerup bursaries of $750.

“For that I am incredibly grateful to the Food Agribusiness Network FAN and Sunshine Coast Business Council who came on board as co-sponsors,” continued Mr Powell. Mr Leo de Clara of Beerburrum (St Joseph's Nudgee College) and Chelsea-Ann Johnson of Peachester (Glasshouse Christian College), like Mikayla, will receive vouchers to Concept IT at Maleny.

“Leo was immediately likeable, con dent, balanced and we loved that he was committed to contributing his university experience back into the region and into farming. Leo believes his studies in nance and law will ensure future agricultural success in the region – and that’s what FAN is all about!” commented Ms Nicole McNaughton, FAN Communications Manager. “Chelsea-Ann was also seen as being decisive and knows what she wants to do with her life. help loosen and lift biological growth, and then Mother Nature takes over. The weathering process gently removes the decomposing growth over time without damaging the surface it has infested.

The original Wet & Forget concentrate has a unique combination of biodegradable selective fungicides to target moss, mould, lichen, algae, and general biological growth. When diluted with water and applied to a dry surface, it immediately attacks the growth. These fungicides work in conjunction with a carefully selected range of surfactants to

Wet and ForgetRapid Application is the new and improved, readyto-use, hose end version of the original Wet & Forget outdoor concentrate moss, mould, lichen and algae remover. It works exactly the same way as the original Wet & Forget 5L concentrate, but it comes in an easy, ready-to-use bottle. Wet & Forget is safe to apply to any exterior surface. Just spray and leave. This can be sandstone, bricks, pavers or tiles.

Just spray and leave, and then over time the surface will come clean.

How much Wet + Forget do I need for the job? For an average 3 bedroom tile roof (approx. 150sq metres) with black mould, you will require either 2 x 5L Wet & Forget concentrate bottles or 2 x 2L Rapid Application bottles. Due to the undulations in the tile, the area being treated is actually larger than 150sq metres, and this is why we say to use 2 packs. This also depends on how much of the area is covered with biological growth and how porous the surface is.

How and When to treat your roo Wet & Forget and Rapid Application are best applied to a DRY roof on a cool, dry day with minimal wind. This will avoid the product being blown away as it is being sprayed on and will also avoid it evaporating too fast in the hot sun or on a hot surface. Make sure that there is no rain expected for at least 6 hours, as premature rain can wash the product off before it has properly penetrated the growth.

Are you Storm Ready A fourth-generation forecaster and son of worldfamous weather expert Lennox Walker has predicted that this storm season would arrive earlier and be the most violent and sustained in several years. Mr Walker said he expected that rainfall for October would total between 41mm-85m with the most severe weather coming towards the end of the month. He believes that the Sunshine Coast would see thunderstorm activity with hail, powerful winds and localised ooding. Now is the time to prepare your place, either rural or residential for the coming storm season whilst you still have a few days or relatively calm weather.m. Truthful Jones

An Old Codger’s

“Thoughts and

opinion.”

We are fast approaching the second anniversary of COVID being in icted on the world and It has been a game changer in respect to the way that we are able to enjoy our day to day lives. For many it has had a very detrimental effect on both mental and nancial situations. We are all getting towards the point where it is now becoming too much to bear. We need changes from the very restrictive ways in which we are now living our lives. Delta was recognised as a SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern and has proved extremely dif cult to control in unvaccinated populations. The Delta version is more contagious, in fact more than 5 times more than the original virus, causes more hospitalisations and deaths and is better at evading vaccines and therapies. The Genie is out of the bottle and it can never be put back in and we now have to learn to live with the situation and make the most of what cards have been dealt. None of us wanted this virus to come into our lives. Unfortunately, now that it is here we must take precautions and do what has to be done to counteract the effects on our lifestyles. In short - GO AND GET VACCINATED! We read daily of some people who do not intend to get vaccinated. We have street protests about having our freedoms taken away because of mandatory vaccinations in some industries and professions. Many reasons are given for not getting vaccinated ranging from the ridiculous to more thought provoking reasons. The most common reasons I can nd though are: (1) - because the government told me that I had to, (2) because I don’t know what is in it. In respect to No 1 people tie the proposal to a loss of freedom. Well, there are many situations whereby tasks have been made mandatory in the common good, mainly for the individual concerned, such as do not use hand hold a phone whilst driving. These types of situations are for the good of other people as well as for the individual concerned. Who wants to be killed by a driver because he/she is on the phone. In respect to No 2 who known what secret spices are in the Finger Licking Good Kentucky Fried Chicken or the magical Coca Cola?

says And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t”

Truthful Jones tells us that his uncle Mick from Ireland visited him in Maleny. Uncle Mick took Mum and their son Pat to Brisbane for the rst time. Mum had an appointment with a doctor, so the two men went off for a walk along Queen Street. As they passed a building, the door opened automatically. They decided to go in, having to dodge as the doors tried to close before they were properly inside. “Gosh, Dad, I hope we can get back out again,” said Pat. While in the auditorium, they watched as a woman, old and wrinkled, hobbled past. She made her way to a marble wall and a section of it mysteriously slid open. The woman stepped in and the wall closed behind her. Dad and Pat stood watching as a counter above the door climbed from 0 to 20. It paused for a few moments and then counted back down to 0. There was a ‘ding’, the wall opened and a beautiful, spry young woman stepped out, walking brightly out of the building. Dad stood, looking slackjawed at his son, Pat . Then he twigged! “Son, go get your mother…! She needs to go into that room and come out just the same as that last lady!”

The wet season runs approximately from from November until April, the tropical region of Australia faces its wet season, characterised by high temperatures, monsoonal rains, and sweltering humidity. I really would like to be gone rather than being locked in by the weather. We will just have to wait and see if we can get going before the rain arrives.

Is Bonsai

your

thing?

Do you want to learn more about Bonsai?

Purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation for the viewer, and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity for the grower Recently we had Jeff from the Sunshine Coast Bonsai Club for putting on the beginner bonsai workshop in our store. It was a great success. The Sunshine Coast Bonsai Society Incorporated was established as a club in 1988 with the objective to promote the art of Bonsai and

associated art forms through our membership and Club activities on the Sunshine Coast and beyond.

Another Bonsai Demo this Saturday 11a.m in Garden Section

They do this by actively engaging with the local community by way of exhibitions, educational demonstrations and excursions. Thus the recent visit to Maleny Hardware and Rural Supplies in Maleny to give a demonstration on the basics of Bonsai.
