Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell M.P. Queensland Remote Area Tracking to the rescue! Queensland Remote Area Tracking is a charitable not-for-pro t Incorporated Association that was established with the purpose of advancing the social or public welfare of the Australian public, by directly targeting and providing for the relief of suffering, misfortune and helplessness of those persons lost in remote or wilderness areas by purposefully nding, rendering safe, and returning them to safety. I’ve previously introduced you to Queensland Remote Area Tracking organisation led by Rich Hungerford from Conondale. Recently I had the opportunity to join the group at one of their Tracker Training sessions. This is an extraordinary group of men providing an invaluable service to the state (particularly in locating missing persons) whilst giving veterans the opportunity to continue to use the specialist skills they’ve developed over decades of service to our nation. Queensland Remote Area Tracking (QRAT) can be activated by any emergency services such as Police, Rural Fire Service and State Emergency Services, or other search and rescue agencies to assist them. I was able to attend the Maleny Late Night Christmas - shopping along the length of Maple Street and in Riverside Centre.

It was good to see so many people out enjoying the night as the weather was perfect for the occasion. Electricity bills ib some areas were out last week. Did you know that after almost a decade of Labor, a new report by the Auditor General has revealed that Queensland is paying the highest wholesale electricity prices in the nation. The reason for the season is fast approaching so to you all have a very happy and safe Christmas season. Remember those who have passed in the past year and may all your dreams for the future come to fruition Merry Christmas to all!.

Mr. Andrew Wallace Federal MP for Fisher Federal Member for Fisher Dastardly Deeds in Israel

It’s been challenging to listen to the rst-hand accounts from survivors and the loved ones of those lost at the Nova Music Festival in Israel. I have visited the #Nova Music Festival Memorial where young Israelis in their TEENS and TWENTIES were murdered, beaten, and kidnapped simply for being #Jewish If hundreds of Australian young people were murdered, raped, kidnapped and tortured, we’d leave no stone unturned until the terrorists were brought to justice, wouldn't we? Gaza, was attacked by terrorists on

foot, on motorbikes, in cars and from the air. They went door-to-door, shooting, raping and taking hostage innocent people. Once their assault ended, Hamas supporters from Gaza looted families’ homes taking almost everything that wasn't nailed down, and torching whatever was left. In the southern Israeli town of Sderot, 30 police of cers were slaughtered by Hamas terrorists as they stormed the station. In a show of solidarity, I raised the Australian ag alongside the Israeli ag in the cleared rubble of what used to be the police station. Council waste recovery strategy

The Sunshine Coast Resource Recovery Strategy 2023 was adopted at Council’s meeting on November 16th.

With industry-leading intelligent sorting technology, the Sunshine Coast MRF will be able to recover glass bottles, plastic containers, cardboard, paper and steel and aluminium cans, supplying a range of quality products for re-use across several industries.

It follows input from the region’s sustainability advocates and outlines Council’s plan to manage waste into the future. The goal is that, by 2041, nothing ends up in land ll. To do this, the strategy considers rubbish not as something to be buried in the ground, but a resource to be reused again and again. Helping drive the repurposing revolution will be a new $40m material recovery facility (MRF) soon to be operational at Nambour.

Gregson and Weight Christmas Memorial Service 2023

The Train of Life By

Each year Gregson and Weight Funerals of Caloundra holds a Christmas Memorial Service whereby those who have lost friends and relatives during the year can gather and join with the departed for a Christmas message. This service is not a religious based service, merely a time to re ect, remember and commune with departed friends and relatives. The signi cance of the Christmas tree is that relatives place a bauble, including a message or photo for the departed and as each does the tree is decoded for the coming Christmas period. The tree stays in the chapel for the duration of that time. People often return during quiet times to re ect. During the evening the prose printed to right was emotionally read out and it summed up the process of life very succinctly. Those who attended the service saw the service in different ways, some saw it as a happy time to once again connect with a happier past whilst others had still not got over the pain of loss. One thing that was in common was that all supported each other, even those who had not met before. Best wishes to all.

Vincent Moore

Life is like a journey on a train, with its stations, change of routes, differing scenes, and accidents! At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believed they would always travel at our side. However, at some station down the line our parents stepped off, leaving the train and us alone to continue on our own. As time passed, other people boarded the train; And they were signi cant: siblings, friends, children, and even the Love of our life. Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we didn’t realise that they had vacated their seats. This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and farewells. Success consists of having a good relationship with all the passengers … requiring that we give the best of ourselves. The mystery to everyone is: we don’t know at which station that we ourselves will be asked to step off. So we must live in the best way – love, forgive, and offer the best of whom we are. It is important to do this, because when the time comes for us to exit, leaving our seat empty, we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue riding the train of life without us. I wish you a joyful journey for the remaining years on your train of life. Reap success, give lots of love, and be happy. More importantly, be thankful for your journey! Lastly, I thank you for being one of the passengers on my train.

Gregsom & Weight Funerals When you lose a loved one, it can be hard to think of what must be done and how to go about it but with Gregson & Weight Funerals at your side, everything will be easier. Christmas is a festive time of year that is enjoyed by many people around the world and it is celebrated differently in each culture. Christmas in Australia is unlike Christmas in many other countries. It is more of a casual affair. It was Christmas Eve in the heart of theAustralian bush, where the gum trees swayed to the rhythm of the summer breeze. The sun beat down relentlessly, but that didn't dampen the festive spirit. The air was lled with the scent of eucalyptus, sunscreen, and anticipation. The small town of Wattle Creek was buzzing with excitement as the locals prepared for their unique brand of Christmas celebration. Bruce, the town's self-proclaimed Christmas elf, had strung fairy lights on every available surface, turning the town centre into a twinkling wonderland. But this was no ordinary Christmas. It was an Aussie bush Christmas, complete with a twist that only the land Down Under could provide. The festivities kicked off with a friendly game of backyard cricket in the dust bowl that passed for a park. The teams were divided along the ageold rivalry of Holden supporters versus Ford enthusiasts. The pitch was marked with makeshift stumps, and the players, donned in Santa hats, swung their cricket bats with the determination usually reserved for deciding which car brand was superior. As the game reached its climax, a mob of kangaroos hopped onto the scene, seemingly eager to join the match. The players paused, exchanged bemused glances, and then decided to incorporate the kangaroos into the game. It turned into a hilarious spectacle as the marsupials hopped around the eld, occasionally intercepting the cricket ball with their powerful hind legs. Meanwhile, the scent of meat pies wafted through the air as families red up their barbies for the traditional Christmas feast. The air was lled with the sizzle of sausages and the aroma of lamb

chops. No prawns on the barbie this time – it was all about the classic Maleny Pie Guy’s Aussie meat pie, with tomato sauce owing like a culinary river. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the locals gathered around the makeshift Christmas tree in the town square. Instead of ornaments, the tree was adorned with footy memorabilia – miniature footballs, team scarves, and even a jersey signed by a local legend. The local Sunshine Coast Councillor, dressed as Santa in shorts and thongs, handed out presents ranging from cricket balls to model Holden cars. The night ended with a chorus of laughter and the crackling sound of reworks lighting up the starry sky. The townspeople exchanged hearty "Merry Christmases" and headed home, their Holden cars rumbling through the dusty streets. And so, in the heart of the Australian bush, Wattle Creek celebrated Christmas in a way only they knew how – with a mix of sports, savoury pies, kangaroo antics, and a touch of Holden pride. It was a day that perfectly encapsulated the Aussie spirit, where even Santa wore shorts, and Christmas cheer echoed through the gum trees until the last kangaroo hopped away into the night. Then all of a sudden another Christmas is over and Boxing Day is generally used to “sleep off” the effects of that busy Christmas Day and the hot heat of an Aussie summer. Typically, the average Aussie will listen to the Boxing Day cricket test on “the wireless” as it is a good excuse not to get too active in the midday sun. Shop Locally & Shop with a Friend 8

In the 1930’s, Christmas for Australian children was a simpler affair compared to today's festivities. The economic challenges of the Great Depression in uenced the types of gifts that Aussie children might have received. Despite nancial constraints, families cherished the holiday spirit and endeavoured to bring joy to their little ones.

C

hristmas Day in 1930 in Australia was marked by a blend of tradition, simplicity, and the enduring spirit of community. Against the backdrop of the Great Depression, families sought comfort and joy in the cherished customs that de ned the festive season.

Gift-giving during the 1930s was characterised by simplicity and thoughtfulness. Handmade toys, often crafted by parents or local artisans, were common. Dolls, wooden toys, and simple puzzles brought joy to children, re ecting a time when the sentiment behind the gift held greater value than its material cost.

The scorching Southern Hemisphere summer shaped the way Australians celebrated Christmas. Outdoor gatherings, picnics, and barbecues were popular ways for families and communities to come together. The holiday meal often featured a mix of traditional British fare and adaptations in uenced by the local climate. Roast meats, such as turkey or lamb, were complemented by seasonal fruits and vegetables. The iconic pavlova, adorned with fresh berries, became a refreshing and beloved Christmas dessert.

Practical gifts such as clothing and accessories were also exchanged, highlighting the importance of utility in a time of economic constraint.

Decorations re ected the resourcefulness of the times. Families often crafted their own ornaments, using recycled materials and incorporating native ora. Paper chains, handmade baubles, and wreaths adorned homes, creating a festive atmosphere even in the face of economic challenges.

Despite the economic hardships, the Australian Christmas of 1930 was a testament to resilience and the enduring values of family, community, and faith. The simplicity of the celebrations highlighted the importance of shared moments and the joy found in the company of loved ones. As Australians faced challenges, they embraced the spirit of the season, nding solace in traditions that brought comfort and a sense of continuity during uncertain times. No doubt thoughts would turn to the Boxing Day test which was to be played at the Lords Cricket ground. This test was subsequently won by Australia by 7wickets, much to the delight of the Aussies.

Music played a signi cant role in the festivities, with carollers visiting homes and community events featuring live performances of traditional Christmas songs.

Unfortunately, this test could only be heard via a “synthetic wireless broadcast” using telex messages from London on Station 2UW, Sydney and 3DB Melbourne.

Church services held a central place in the Christmas celebrations of 1930. Midnight Mass and Christmas Day services were attended by many, offering a moment of re ection and spiritual connection. The nativity scene, a symbol of the Christian faith, was often a focal

point in churches and homes, depicting the birth of Jesus surrounded by shepherds, angels, and the Three Wise Men.

The emphasis on community and togetherness was a hallmark of Christmas Day celebrations. Neighbours, friends, and extended family members gathered for festive meals and shared the warmth of the season.

Maleny Community Speaking Up Against Domestic Violence – 25 Active Bystanders Trained

Every few days in Australia, someone is murdered by their current or former partner, and most of the victims are women. Every 2 minutes the police respond to a call out for domestic violence. We see these statistics and say, ‘But what can I do about it?’ Well, a group in Maleny got together last week to consider just that question. As bystanders not personally affected by domestic or family violence, what is our responsibility as community members, and what can we do?

relationship uses any means to dominate and control the other – this can be verbal, psychological, nancial, social, or take many other forms.

Speak Up Now - Stop Domestic and Family Violence is a collaboration of community groups in Maleny and the Blackall Range, who invited Lifeline to run one of their accredited Bystander Action workshops. The cost of the four-hour workshop was sponsored by the Suncoast Coast Regional Council, Rob Skelton MP, Apex Maleny, the Uniting Church of Maleny, the Lions Club of Maleny & Blackall Range, Zonta Blackall Range, the Rotary Club of Maleny, the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, and attended by 25 participants from those organisations as well as interested individuals.

Participants discussed all the reasons that domestic violence is so common, and reasons that the rest of us, as bystanders, do not take any action when we are aware of factors that may lead to violence. Finally, they considered actions they might take before, during, and after being aware of situations that could result in domestic or family violence.

The causes of domestic violence are complex, and include factors in the individual, the relationship, their community, and society. While drugs and alcohol may be involved in some cases, these are not the root cause. Often it is societal beliefs that men should control their partner, and women should be submissive.

Speak Up Now is planning another such workshop early next year, which has been generously sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. For further information and expressions of interest, email:

Heat stress is something To consider! We are about to have a long period of hot weather over the Christmas New year period. Heat stress can occur from about 30 degrees c and occurs and heat stress occurs when the body can’t cool itself and maintain a healthy temperature. On hot days it’s best to avoid sun exposure, drink plenty of uids, limit physical activity and stay in cool, well-ventilated areas. Try cooling measures. If possible, take a cool • shower, soak in a cool bath or put towels soaked in cool water on your skin. Loosen clothing. An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

Truthful Jones says

Well, The Sunshine Coast Council has announced that it will scrap the 2024 Australia Day Awards and replace it with the Sunshine Coast Biosphere Community Awards. The Australia Day awards celebrate the efforts and contributions of individuals, community organisations and businesses making a difference in our community. They celebrated the achievement and contribution of everyday individuals and community organisations and present real community examples of sustainability efforts and action in the community.

And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t” Truthful tells us that his niece, a blonde walks into a bank in Brisbane and asks for the loan of cer. She says she’s going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank of cer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so the blonde hands over the keys to a new Holden SS ute.

Could someone please explain just how the decision to scrap the Australia Day Awards came to be? Is it a case of becoming more woke or should we say “having a wank”?

The car is parked on the street in front of the bank; she has the title, and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan.

The new awards will recognise those who uphold the region’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve goals and show real examples of sustainability in the community.

The bank Manages and his of cers all enjoy a good laugh at the blonde for using a $70.000 car as collateral against a $5,000 loan.

How did this change in council policy come about - was it put to the community in any way? Was it a decision of the elected council representatives, if so did they ask their constituents or was it merely a “brain fart” of some unelected bureaucrat who wishes to push their own agenda.

An employee of the bank then drives the Holden into the bank’s underground garage and parks it there in a high security area.

Thankfully, there is a council election coming up in 2024 and voters should directly seek the thoughts of their candidates before they give any of them their vote. Unfortunately, this is really the only time that community representatives at all levels listen. Again, what they do after the election is always another matter. Do they set the agenda for reforms in the community at any level, or do the bureaucrats decide how a community is to live and advise the elected representatives accordingly.

The loan of cer says, “Miss, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely; but we are a little puzzled. We checked you out and found that you are a millionaire. What puzzles us is - why would you bother to borrow $5,000?”

Whilst it is not practicably possible, it would be good to be able to give a report card on decision making bureaucrats and those who do not “make the cut” actually “get the cut”. Whilst protecting the environment is important, so too is recognising those who go above when volunteering within our community. Is the celebration of Australia Day to be the next casualty? Is this just the rst step towards removing Australia Day events from the minds and social calendars of ordinary Australians? If so do not replace it with something else that has no or little relevance and also remove any bene ts that go with that special day. Just who is driving the car?

Two weeks later, Truthful’s niece returns and repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41.

The blond replies..... ”Where else in Brisbane can I park my car for two weeks in a high security area for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?” Morale; Never judge a book by the cover. There can be a lot more between the covers that is not always readily evident to the unsuspecting. Did you know that Christmas is the time when people put up so many light bulbs outside you don’t know if they’re celebrating the birth of Jesus or the electricity company. Or that Christmas is in my heart 12 months a year – and thanks to credit cards it is on my Mastercard statement 12 months a year also. Shop Locally & Shop with a Friend 16

Selling or buying a property! Here are a few things to consider during the process With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny It has hardly gone unnoticed there’s a bit of a stampede underway from the more intensely COVID affected southern states to the beautiful and considerably less affected Sunshine State. However as physics tells us everything has an equal and opposite reaction and in this case that result has been a different kind. The outbreak of a whooper of a property boom in South-East Queensland!

Fourteen Day Finance Pre the current frantic market, the standard Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) Contracts which document the bulk of house, townhouse, unit, apartment and rural land and building sales in Queensland had an average nance approval time frame of about fourteen days. However, due to the massive increase in demand currently being placed on real estate agents, nance brokers, banks and other nancial institutions [should I include law rms and government agencies] twentyone days is the minimum and it can take longer to get nance approval. This being the case the ood of Southerners moving north expecting a quick settlement may have unreasonable expectations about how quickly their new property will move through the settlement process, as Queensland always had a reputation for fast thirty-day

settlements as opposed to the slower Southern states.

to the overload of work at present.

And we did, in a normal market. But this is not a normal market cycle and Queensland notwithstanding a highly advanced electronic property titling system, can only work as fast as the people within it.

Better to ask up front now than try to negotiate and extension under the contract and have it fall over after you have told your family and friends you’re moving to the beautiful Sunshine Coast.

The Pest in Inspections While I hope by now ,I’m starting to preach to the choir, while we are delighted to have you join us here in the best state in Australia, not that we don’t all love a trip to the south for skiing, shopping, eating and well, all the other great stuff you have on offer… we just prefer to live here in Queensland (I’ll spare you the slogan). So, another hurdle you will need to climb over to come join us here in the beautiful north will be the timing of your inspections. While we have a great many well quali ed building and pest inspectors, when sales are happening at the rate they are during a property boom as we are currently experiencing, there are going to be delays. There are a nite number of quali ed inspectors and at the moment an in nite number of properties to be inspected. So like the nance when purchasing in Queensland be mindful that you allow at least 14 days for if possible for property inspections, noting to the purchaser that it is dif cult during this boom to get a booking due

Thirty Day Settlements a Myth Once upon a time (pre COVID) in Queensland the wonderful magical land settlement on a contract only took 30 days even if subject to nance. However, now post COVID, mid property boom, mid overloaded nance infrastructure and inspection systems the reality is closer to forty- ve days for settlement.

Snail Mail Now I mentioned above that we are pretty darn tech savvy here in the Sunshine State. So we might like to spend our days sitting under a palm tree sipping a cool one, but we do it with a laptop while designing code! So the bulk of our conveyancing in Queensland is electronic, none of this waddling off to a registry of ce nonsense we just press a button and it’s done. However, the law is still a bit ancient and try as it would to keep up with the modern world

Selling or buying a property! Here are a few things to consider during the process With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

(and it is trying) it does from time-to-time lag behind just a bit. One area where it can lag is veri cation of identi cation. There are restraints on verifying identi cation for example, that require law rms to ‘physically’ view or witness certain items. This means we must rely on good old snail mail.

If any of you have tried using mail lately, you will know that the term ‘express’ can be a tad exaggerated, further slowing down the process of the contract progressing to completion.

No Quickies in Queensland So I guess my conclusions are and my advice to those of you moving north (as you should) from the Southern states to beautiful

Queensland is this, the quicky settlement days of Queensland are in the past. While we are pretty much COVID free we are suffering from a bit of cue of folks wanting to get through the border bubble and into our trouble-free sunshine lled zone. We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets? We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under ve dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Pro ts from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!
