Mandatory Masks extended for extra week!
The Queensland Premier, Ms Annastacia Palaszczuk has declared that masks will continue to be mandatory in parts of the southeast, that includes the Sunshine Coast Council area for another seven days.
One of those found with the virus is a 12-year-old boy who had come from hotel quarantine in Sydney on July 9th and was in the community until July 13th when he felt unwell. The boy had travelled with his mother to the United States for three months before returning to Sydney on June 21.
The announcement comes as ve new cases of coronavirus have been detected in Queensland over the past 24 hours and the state faces two potentially new outbreaks.
Another positive test was a female airport worker, who lives in Tarragind on the south side
suburb of Brisbane. This person had been working at the Brisbane airport while infectious for three days. Queenslanders should reconsider any need to travel to NSW or Victoria as the virus continues to spread uncontrolled throughout those states. In our area the Kenilworth Bakery has been declared as a site visited recently by an infected person.

Project Completion - Division 5
Elaman Creek Bridge Rehabilitation
Sunshine Coast Council advises that the replacement timber bridge has been completed out on Elaman Creek Road. The previous bridge design and construction was a risk to heavy service and maintenance vehicles that utilised the road. Council engaged local timber bridge specialists to design and construct the new timber bridge for a lower price than a concrete bridge. The project was delivered under budget and before the construction deadline. The design minimised the impact to the existing bridge approaches and the creek banks. Construction of the new bridge was completed off site to eliminate any impacts to the creek system and to minimise the duration of construction. Below are some before and after pictures to show the impressive new timber bridge.

“Norseal Wood Treatment” https://www.norglass.com.au/how-to
(Stopping the Rot in Timber)
Norseal Wood Treatment is a thin solution of epoxy resin compounds to lock out moisture and waterproof timbers.
Norglass Paints introduce new product
Norseal WoodTreatment is a water clear epoxy solution designed to penetrate, seal and waterproof particle boards and timbers. It is recommended to be overcoated with a primer such as Shipshape within 4 weeks of application. In permanently shaded areas Norseal can alternatively be coated with a clear nish.
Norglass Paints and Specialty Paints have introduced a new product. Deep Pour Liquid Glass. It can be poured up to 50mm thick, is crystal clear, self-levelling and low odour.
It is ideal on chipboard furniture and ooring as a waterproof barrier. It can be painted over with any type of paint, water based, solvent based or chemicallyCured 2 pack product after appropriate curing period.
It will come in sizes 6LTR, 15LTR, 30LTR and 600LTR for those big jobs.
The answer to stopping wood rot is to completely seal the wood, so that there are no “backdoor” opportunities for water to start the cancer of wood rot. We call this treatment “NORSEAL”... an epoxy wood treatment. This 2 pack coating is designed as a waterthin product so that it has maximum penetration and wetting characteristics.
Metallics and Liquid Colourants are also available for this Liquid Glass.
Apply the product to the bare wood by brush or paint roller in a liberal manner. At the Norglass Specialty Paints factory there are cubes of Norseal impregnated chipboard which have been suspended in water for more than 25 years and are still as dimensionally stable as they were in the beginning.
The original liquid glass is also still available for topping of bench tops or bar tops.

Another Scam Alert! Scammers have set up a clone of the myGov website to trick you into sharing your login and bank account details are available on the Stay Smart Online website. The scam starts with a phishing email that looks like it is from Medicare, asking you to update your Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) details, so you can start receiving payments for Medicare bene ts and claims. If you click on the link in the email you are taken a replica of the real myGov website. You’ll note the URL includes ‘.net’ instead of ‘.gov.au’, which is an indication the website is not a legitimate Australian Government domain! If you input your login details you are directed to also enter your secret security question and answer, before you’re taken to the fake Medicare website to input your bank account details. These emails and web pages feature myGov and Medicare design and branding, making them appear legitimate. Remember, clicking on the link and sharing your details gives these scammers access to your personal information, which they then use to steal your money and identity!
Covid Vaccines are a must! The message is clearer than ever - get vaccinated as soon as you are eligible to help all of us onto the path out of COVID-19 and back to normal life in this country. The Delta variant of COVID-19 has changed the way Australia is dealing with the pandemic. It's far more infectious than the previous viruses. The Prime Minister and National Cabinet have agreed a four stage process of moving beyond lockdowns and closed borders in this country but how quickly we can move through these stages depends on how quickly Australians sign up to receive the vaccine when it is their turn. When we as a nation returns to as near as possible to normal won't be based on people's opinions. Or their politics. It will be based on scienti c evidence. There will always be some remnants of the pandemic remaining, but Australia will begin treating it more like a seasonal u. As the country progresses through each stage it would be incumbent upon Australians choosing to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Vaccine supplies are increasing fast, now it is up to all of us.

The next Friday morning play reading will be on the 30th July from 9,30am until noon at the playhouse, Maleny Showgrounds. The Players will be reading one- act plays by Jill Shearer, a high- ying but modest Brisbane playwright who wrote plays stories and poetry from 1972 until her death in 2012. Jill's short plays won many prizes and were mostly performed by Brisbane Repertory Theatre at La Boite. Jill's plays, including her full-length play Shimada were produced all over the world including on Broadway!

August 2021 is Census month Every ve years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics counts every person and home in Australia. This is called the Census of Population and Housing. This year the census will be conducted on Tuesday the 10th August, 2021. Census data helps plan services and infrastructure that improve the lives of people
A clutch of Jill's plays have come to us as a special legacy via sources who treasured them as historical Brisbane theatre archives.
The Census is the most comprehensive snapshot of the country and tells the story of how we are changing. It includes around 10 million households and over 25 million people. Census data tells about the economic, social and cultural make-up of Australia.
The Plays highlight some very Queensland issues of their time.
Queensland’s One Time Use plastic ban to commence
The Census is compulsory. Everyone who is staying in your household on Census night must be included. You should complete the Census wherever you are on Census night. This includes visitors and babies. The Census does not include Australian residents who are out of the country on Census night.
Information sessions for businesses and community groups who use disposable single-use packaging to learn how to comply with the incoming QLD plastics ban
From September 1, 2021, certain single-use plastic items will be banned in QLD, including plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates, bowls and expanded polystyrene cups and containers.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics want to protect you from false information about the 2021 Census.
As many groups and businesses provide takeaway food and drink as part of their community and fundraising activities, this may affect how you operate. As such, your group may bene t from information on how to comply with the new bans.
People are encourage you to report any inaccurate or suspicious information you read or hear through our enquiry form at the web address:
Sunshine Coast sessions will be held at Caloundra on Tuesday 10 August, 5.30-6:30pm.

Rotary Club of Maleny Meets the Platypus Whisperer Recently the Maleny Rotary Club had as a Guest Speaker, Neil Andison who is also known as “the Maleny Platypus Whisperer”. Neil went to sea at age 15. He spent 10 years in the Australian Navy and then 10 years in the RAAF. He retired in 2000 after running an electrical business as well as a job driving cherry pickers. He peppered his presentation with loads of platypus facts as well as photos taken of the platypus he has encountered, and named, in the Obi Obi in the stretch from the Showgrounds to the Community Precinct. He cleared up early the misconception that the plural of the platypus, a marsupial, correctly called Ornithorhynchus anatinus, is ‘Platypus’ not ‘Platypii’ as some of us learned at primary school. Some fun platypus facts noted by Neil: A fully-grown platypus should have approximately equal proportions of tail, body and head/beak. Neil can often tell the female platypus by bare patches on their tails.
minutes underwater, they drown. Dingoes, Pythons, Birds of Prey as well as feral cats, dogs and also domestic dogs prey on platypus. In dry weather they can travel up to 8km overland to reach another waterhole. When you see a king sher in a creek or waterhole, good chance a platypus may be nearby. Platypus can detect electrical impulses of their prey as well as the pressure waves of obstacles in the water that they need to negotiate. Neil has an absolute passion for the platypus in the 1.8 km reach of the Obi Obi which he has been observing and photographing for 8 years. He gets up at 4.30am most mornings to walk the creek, looking for the familiar ripples in the water made by the movement of the platypus bills.
They are genetically similar to birds and reptiles (they walk like a reptile) Males have 2 spurs on the inside of the back legs, these spurs have a toxic venom. They are found exclusively in Australia & only found east of the Dividing Range. They can live up to 20 years in the wild. They cannot hear or see, eat or breathe underwater. They use electro and mechano receptors to sense their food sources. They mate between June- October in Queensland. They need to forage for about 16 hours per day to maintain good health, so can be seen at any time of day if you are patient and have time to wait…and wait…to spot them. The biggest danger to them are shing nets- their heads get caught in the netting and as they can only survive about 3

Truthful Jones says
An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions Senior Constable David Masters was killed on duty at about 3a.m. on Saturday June 26th while using tyre-de ating stingers attempting to stop an alleged stolen vehicle on the Bruce Highway at Burpengary. The Senior Constable made the ultimate sacri ce to keep the community safe. He was be farewelled at a funeral with full police honours held at Traditional Funerals on Moray eld Road in Burpengary on Friday, July 9, at 12.30pm. Because of the restrictions in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic the funeral was limited by law to just 100 mourners. Of cers performing the tribute were forced to do so about 1.5km away from the service - and 1.5m apart - in a “separate event”. It is ironical that on Sunday July 4th, the weekend before, this funeral, it was considered “safe” to have a football match played at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. The match between the Broncos and The Sharks was played before a packed stadium which has a capacity of 52,500 people. Not only was the stadium a sell-out all those people had to get from their homes to the stadium and return home and also congregated in the precinct around the stadium both before and after the game. Maybe the Premier realises that sports fans cannot get infected or pass on the infection whilst at a major sporting event. There was anger in the police service because Masters’ colleagues were not be allowed to pay their respects and attend his funeral proper. To add insult to the injury Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she was not able to attend the funeral. Does this sound a little hypercritical to you?
And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t” Truthful Jones said that he was sadly embarrassed by his grandson, Patrick the other night when he took him shopping at Maleny IGA. Patrick was in the habit of sucking his thumb all the time. His mother tried everything to break him of the habit. Finally, one day she pointed to a fat man with a very large stomach and said that the man had grown his stomach because he did not stop sucking his thumb. It was the next time that Truthful took Patrick to Maleny IGA. Patrick kept staring at a woman with a stomach that was obviously not normal. In fact the woman was very pregnant. Finally the irate woman said to the child, “ Stop staring at me like that. You don’t know who I am.” “ No, “ said Patrick, “ but I do know what you have been doing.” Morale: Don’t try to put it over young children. They will bring you down every time. Thumb sucking, in adults, is a lot more common than most people realise.

Tit for Tat
Two Queensland Police Of cers were conducting speeding enforcement on the Cunningham Highway, just west of the Amberley Air force Base at Ipswich. The of cers were using hand held radar devices to check speeding vehicles approaching the crest of a hill. The of cers were suddenly surprised when their radar guns began reading 500 kms per hour. The of cer attempted to reset the radar guns, but they would not reset and then turned off. Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact locked on to an RAAF F/A-18F Super Hornet which was engaged in a low ying exercise near the location. Back at the QLD Police Headquarters the Patrol Sergeant red off a complaint to the RAAF Base Commander. The reply came back in true RAAF style: Thank you for your letter. We can now complete the le on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Hornet had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked on to your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it, which is why it shut down. Furthermore, an Air-to-Ground missile aboard the fully armed aircraft had also automatically locked on to your equipment location. Fortunately, the Senior Pilot ying the Hornet recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile system alert status and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched to destroy the hostile radar position. The pilot also suggests you cover your mouths when cursing at them, since the video systems on these jets are very high tech. Sergeant Johnson, the of cer holding the left radar gun, should get his dentist to check his left rear molar. It appears the lling is loose. Also, the snap is broken on his holster. Thank you for your concern. Wing Commander Brown, SFO RAAF. Amberley. Ipswich, Qld.
Emergency services were called to the scene near Mary Cairncross Avenue and Mountain View Road at 7am Saturday morning July 3rd. t’s understood the man was unconscious for around eight hours after the accident near Maleny Manor on Friday night when his ute crashed down an embankment. A police spokesperson said that on the Saturday morning he had to walk to a pay phone at the intersection of Landsborough Road and Mary Cairncross Drive to call for help. The driver told of cers that the accident happened at 11pm Friday and he had been knocked out. A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said paramedics arrived at 7.10am. The male patient had no obvious injuries and declined transport to hospital. Police remained at the scene until the white Nissan ute was recovered and towed by Claytons Towing. The spokesman said there would be no further investigations into the accident.
Get ready for swooping birds The breeding season for most swooping birds – including magpies, plovers, crows and butcherbirds – is July to November, peaking between August to October. Bird parents are most protective right before the chicks are about to leave the nest as this is when they are most vulnerable. Generally, the swooping zone around a nest can be up to 150m. It is important to avoid threatening or scaring nesting birds, as this will increase the intensity of swooping.

The Brisbane Ekka 2021
Where the bush meets the city The Brisbane Ekka is once again upon us for the 143 rd time and we can once again expect the westerly winds. Like all major event operators, we are looking forward to recovery and are planning for the gates to open in August 2021. Run by the RNA and staged at its original birthplace, the Brisbane Showgrounds, the Ekka brings the country and city together for a true celebration of agriculture. After such a challenging year, the RNA is delighted to be working hard to bring the country to the city once again to celebrate the 143rd staging of the Ekka which will commence on August 7th and continue on until August 15th.
The Ekka “Full of Traditions”
Each year about 1500 school students and about 300 teachers visit the show and learn about all of the rural aspects of Queensland from the animals in the animal nursery which rst appeared at the Ekka in 1964 right through to farming machinery and just how some of the food they eat is grown. This is truly bridging the rural city divide. They also learn the skills of the talented preserve makers through specially conducted workshops.
In 1921 King George V allowed the show to be named “The Royal Brisbane Show”. This followed a visit to Brisbane in 1921 by then King Edward V111. The rst show I can remember attending was in 1952 as a preteenage person. In those days the only way to successfully get to the show was either by bus
In the 1950’s and 1960’s it was nothing to have over 800,000 people visit the Ekka each year. Today, the number is somewhere between 350,000 and 500,000. Maybe this is a testament to how many events are now on to entertain the people of Queensland, or maybe it just a sign of the times and people’s changing view of what makes good entertainment.

The Ekka grounds also has a railway station. Today this plays a much larger part in getting people into and out of the Ekka grounds. This station only operates during the Brisbane Ekka.
The Ekka is still one annual event not to be missed. This year the Ekka will run over two full weekends which allows for more accessibility for more people. Continued next page

or tram coming all the way into Gregory Terrace. Long lines of trams were seen slivering down the hill into the show-grounds.
Starting on the 7th August and going until the 15th August The Ekka serves to bring together Queensland’s country and city folk. It was also known as the time of year that the westerly winds came to Brisbane.
Whilst the rst show to be held at the present site was in January 1876 it was called an exhibition, and over 17000 people attended. That is exceptional since the population of Brisbane at the time was only 22,000.
In the past one of the annual events most looked upon by people from all around Queensland was the Brisbane Exhibition, or as it was more commonly known “The Ekka”. It is also Queensland’s biggest events.
The Brisbane Ekka 2021
Where the bush meets the city Sideshow Alley
Agricultural Display
Sideshow Alley has changed over time. Long gone are the illusionists such as the bodyless head on a plate, the boxing troups such as The Sharmans, Fred Brophy, and the great 'Cowboy' Blair Wilsont. The Ring of Death with motor cycle stunt riders carrying out gravity defying tricks was another favourite. The likes of the sharp shooter and whip trickster Larry Dulhunty also proving popular.
The Brisbane Ekka has always been a place where one could see products and produce from all over Queensland. The Sunshine Coast, especially the hinterland areas of Palmwoods, Montville and Maleny have strongly displayed produce. In 1953 Maleny Dairy Farmer, Mr. E. Lawley was showing his cattle at the Ekka, in 2013 students from the Maleny High School will be carrying on the tradition and showing animals bred as part of the school’s agricultural class. A lot of work goes into each animal to show, the cattle had to be washed with a special shampoo, dried, combed and had their hooves polished all to be showready.
Something that has never changed is that the younger generation like the rides that come to the Ekka. Rides like the Haunted House Ride may change over time and popularity ebbs and ows. Other rides continue to entertain children for generations. Such is the Grand Carousel.
Even through to recent years there have been students from the Maleny High School exhibiting cattle at the Ekka thus keeping the tradition of a rural Maleny alive.
Farmyard Animals
It has been an icon at the Brisbane Ekka since the 1920’s and has delighted generations of families is the The Grand Carousel.
A lot of Brisbane Kids simply don’t encounter animals, especially farm animals, as part of the.ir daily routine. Every day you can watch tiny chicks hatch from their eggs. Over the years millions of youngsters have had their rst up close look at the many farmyard animals at the Ekka. The animal display is one of the most popular at the show and has always been. Seeing a cow being milked or feeding a baby lamb by hand is an awesome experience that your Brisbane Kids will not forget quickly. It also gives those children a better perspective about where our food comes from. It proves once and for all time that milk does not come naturally in a carton.
It was built in Britain in the late 1880s and rst seen in Australia in the roaring twenties. In 1927 a German built organ was added and was rst ridden at the Brisbane Ekka in 1951 and still thrills youngsters today.
Many young people were heard to say that they would never eat meat again as they did not want to eat such friendly animals. Continued next page

History of the Witta Cemetery and Mitchell the Aboriginal To the north-east of Maleny is an area called Witta. Witta, was rst settled by German immigrants around the late 1880‘s. once known as Teutoburgh in the 1880s. The name Teutoburgh came from a nearby German mission. Witta. In 1916, due to anti-German sentiment associated with the Great War, the town was renamed Witta. Depending on who tells the story there appears to be some difference of opinion about the name Witta. The most common explanation is that the name was derived from an Aboriginal word (either wutdah, meaning red cedar, or wetya, meaning dingo.)
Hence the non-German pronunciation. Another explanation is that the named after Witten which is a university city Westphalia, Germany.
be buried in the Witta Cemetery was “Mitchell the Aboriginal”. Mitchell was a member of an aboriginal group which was part of the Durandir tribe.
Witta is a residential area. There is little else in the area. It was once had a very strong dairy industry. It also once had a school, however that school has long since closed down and students from the area travel by bus to schools in nearby Maleny.
He worked throughout the Sunshine Coast hinterland for a number of early settlers. Whilst working for a settler family at Peachester he saved the life of the young son of the settler family. The young lad had a burst appendix. There were no local doctors, the closest being at the Brisbane Hospital. (Now Royal Brisbane Hospital). It was believed that the lad would certainly die without medical treatment.
One thing that Witta does have that nearby Maleny, the larger township does not is a cemetery. A walk around that cemetery gives a snapshot of the history of the whole area. Scattered across the cemetery are the names of the rst German families who settled at Witta. In fact the Witta Cemetery came about as a result of a generous donation from the Van Dryke family in 1898.
Mitchell carried the young lad to Coochin Creek from where a steam ship loaded with timber travelled daily to Brisbane.

The then Landsborough Shire Council attended to the burial.
The ceremony heard from Ms. Beverley Hand and Alex Bond, members of the Gubbi-Gubbi tribe.
This occurred after Harry Warne, (Grandfather of Hilda Penny), who was Chairman of the Council at the time is said to have said to a council meeting; “If any aboriginal deserves to be buried in a white-man’s cemetery it is Mitchell.” Local wood-worker, Ludwig Tesch built the cof n for Mitchell at the time - such was the communities feelings for Mitchell. At the time Mitchell’s headstone was the biggest in the cemetery and remained as the biggest until today.
Following his death in September 1919 Mitchell was buried in the Witta Cemetery. It was very uncommon for an aboriginal to be buried in a “white man’s cemetery” in those days.
Witta Cemetery is nestled in a quiet country location. What a place for a nal resting place, under the gum trees and overlooking the Witta Sports Ground where young people meet regularly to ght that most important battle of all - a sporting contest.
On Wednesday April 22nd, 2009 the Maleny Historical Society in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council commemorated the refurbishment of Mitchell’s headstone.
Much work has been completed over the past few years to make this nal resting place even better.
The ceremony was attended by Councillors, Tim Dwyer, Deputy Mayor and local Councillor, Jenny Mckay.
Much of this work has been done by locals Colin Carbery and the late Frank Rough with support from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Both these people come from local pioneer families. The “Mitchell Project was coordinated by the Maleny Historical Society Committee. The Witta Cemetery is just one of which is operated by the Sunshine Coast Council and is still in active operation today. Cemeteries show a face to a communities history.

Keeping your garden going in winter!
We are now passed the equinox and the days are already getting longer, so now is a good time to nish all those garden housekeeping and construction jobs before spring “springs”.
Now is a good time to prune your roses. Pruning any other spring- owering shrubs and climbers now will mean loss of owers for the year, so hold your re on those varieties. Summer- owering shrubs could be pruned now in frost-free areas. Citrus don't generally need a lot of pruning, but it's a good time to selectively prune for size and shape and to remove dead and unhealthy wood. This includes swellings caused by the gall wasp.
Vegetable seeds planted in cold wet soils will be slow to take off and vulnerable to rot. Vegetables could be attempted - beetroot and silverbeet, cabbage and kale, carrots, lettuce, radish, peas. Provided there is no frost, also tomatoes and capsicums, beans, cucurbits. You might even choose to grow some edibles entirely in large pots and planters, allowing to you make use of patio and courtyards. If you have empty vegetable beds, apply lime or dolomite if they haven't been treated in a few years, especially if you're going to be planting beans in a few weeks. Now is a good time to plan your upcoming planting schedule.

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top”
O
One never known who one may meet. Got a “gold donation from this “golden character”. I got into a staring contest with this bloke back in march 2020 in Stanthorpe and eventually he came over and shook my hand.
This is a photos his wife took. The surrounding crowd thought it was humorous. I thought that it was just golden. The staring could be never ending, but in the end he just walked over and made the gold donation - I hope he has passed on to me “the Midas touch” when it comes to getting more donations for our benefactors. I have now made it to the Townsville Show. Due to a strict no dogs policy on the Showgrounds Bitsa will be at Boarding for a few days till the shows over. I needed to stock up for the next part of the journey, unfortunately I forget my mask, then I remembered I’ve always got one handy.
Got to say Gday to Robbie Katter MP yesterday at the Townsville Show, pretty decent bloke. Rob said, “It doesn't get more country than this, if you see Sam on his journey if you can, donate to his mission in helping those more vulnerable.
Here's to a cheeky-faced young Australian with a big heart and n even bigger dream. Bon voyage from Maleny, and safe travels Sam. You can follow Sam’s adventures via his Facebook Page at “The Travelling Jackaroo” https://www.facebook.com/ thetravellingjackaroo
Apart from hiding my face my hat is also good for thwapping a galloping horse or your dim-witted comedic sidekick. Oh - that is right I don’t have either!
Sams proposed route - Maleny to Maleny!
Be a real “Mate” Make sure that you look after your mates - Treat them all well!.
