Another evolution for Maple Street, Maleny
The quirky little coffee shop, The Shotgun Expresso Cafe has morphed into nights as the newest espresso wine bar in Maleny when it officially “re-opened” on December 9th to help celebrate the 2022 Maleny Street Christmas Fair.
For those who missed it, you missed a good night of fun and frivolity. Whether you want space for a group or an intimate corner or you can follow the signs to ‘The Secret Garden’ - you will be well catered for in the newly renovated spaces.
Not only that you now can choose between a coffee or a little shot of your favourite alcoholic beverage.
Ebony, the new Head Chef is passionate about healthy, delicious and ethically sourced food & coffee. So, if you’re a foodie with a conscience then don’t wait too long before you visit the Shotgun Cafe.
Owner, Kelly Robson said; “Think of us as an espresso wine bar now. My inspiration came from similar bars in Melbourne.”
There used to be a saying; “a penny for your thoughts”. Well, no longer does it apply because in 1966 decimal currency became legal currency in Australia. It was first minted in Australia in 1911 with the last minted in 1964.

Any proposal to change our constitution in relation to “The Voice” should be carefully considered and should be informed by a public debate where arguments for and against change are examined openly and fairly.
The Federal Government wants to fiddle with the legislation that decides how referendums are run by:
- Abolishing the official yes and no pamphlet;
- Refusing to recognise an official yes and no campaign; and
- Cancelling public funding in favour of a so-called ‘civic education’ campaign.
The Electoral Matters Committee is due to report by the first Sitting week in February

POLITICAL COMMENT MADE BY Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey MP
In answer to a question about road safety at Christmas.
"When we drive on our roads it's not just about you as a driver, it's about your passengers, it's about other people using the roads, and that means not drink driving, that means not being distracted with your mobile phone, and that means wearing a seatbelt,”
“Good on him - we all want to stay safe.“

What is happening to Brisbane’s Cross River Tunnel
The latest Auditor-General report has peeled back the Palaszczuk Government’s PR façade and photo ops to reveal the true story of Cross River Rail, and that story should be hard to stomach for taxpayers and commuters.
Infrastructure Australia had previously warned that the business case for the project didn’t stack up. It’s now highly likely the ballooning cost of Cross River Rail will exceed its benefit to Queenslanders.
Brisbanes Cross River Rail is a new 10.2 kilometre rail line from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, which includes 5.9 kilometres of twin tunnels under the Brisbane River and the CBD is is a critical public transport infrastructure project. It is proposed to improve our quality of life, help our economy keep growing, generate thousands of jobs, and activate urban development across the whole region. Let
That is a shocking finding taken from the latest Auditor-General’s report which has shredded the Palaszczuk Government’s business case for the project.
This is an important project that should have been delivered on time and on budget but unfortunately the Palaszczuk Government’s inability to deliver infrastructure has severely
undermined Cross River Rail, but has blown out by billions and will not deliver what was promised. The Palaszczuk Government has severely overcooked patronage projections meaning the forecasted benefits for passengers, the city, taxpayers and the economy has gone up in smoke.

Wet & forget “mould killer” products
The original Wet & Forget concentrate is the ultimate outdoor moss, mould, lichen and algae remover that is safe to use on any exterior surface. It kills problem spores and helps stop premature regrowth of unwanted biological growth. With the season of summer barbecues, Christmas gettogethers and planning for New Year's celebrations now well on the way, it’s time to make sure your entertaining areas are looking spick & span!
The original Wet & Forget concentrate has a unique combination of biodegradable selective fungicides to target moss, mould, lichen, algae, and general biological growth. When diluted with water and applied to a dry surface, it immediately attacks the growth. These fungicides work in conjunction with a carefully selected range of surfactants to help loosen and lift biological
growth, and then Mother Nature takes over. The weathering process gently removes the decomposing growth over time without damaging the surface it has infested.
Wet and ForgetRapid Application is the new and improved, readyto-use, hose end version of the original Wet & Forget outdoor concentrate moss, mould, lichen and algae remover. It works exactly the same way as the original Wet & Forget 5L concentrate, but it comes in an easy, ready-to-use bottle.
Wet & Forget is safe to apply to any exterior surface.
Just spray and leave. This can be sandstone, bricks, pavers or tiles. Just spray and leave, and then over time the surface will come clean. Remember that this product does not clean the surface IMMEDIATELY.
It is a maintenance product and needs to be reapplied on a regular basis depending on the amount of rain and sunshine that the area receives.
It is a great productive used correctly as a maintenance product. Wet & Forget rapid works simply by attaching to your hose. No pumping or mixing!
How and When to treat your roof
Wet & Forget and Rapid Application are best applied to a DRY roof on a cool, dry day with minimal wind. This will avoid the product being blown away as it is being sprayed on and will also avoid it evaporating too fast in the hot sun or on a hot surface. Make sure that there is no rain expected for at least 6 hours, as premature rain can wash the product off before it has properly penetrated the growth.

Suspicious fire at Maleny Spicers Retreat
At about about 6.20am on December 4th fire crews were called to a suspicious fire at Spa Anise, at the Spicers Tamarind Retreat at 88 Obi Lane South, Maleny.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said the building’s roof collapsed and was still burning when help arrived. It appears that the fire burnt for hours overnight before it was detected. The scene of the fire is located close to Gardners Falls, Maleny.
Police would like to talk to a woman who notified Spicers Tamarind staff of the existence of the fire but didn’t leave her name.
The Regional fire investigator arrived at the scene about 11.30am. and will assist police forensic officers with completing a report for the coroner.
Spa Anise at Spicers Tamarind Retreat will be closed until further notice.

Sunshine Coast Police are warning residents to be mindful of people going door-to-door offering bitumen services at reduced prices.
In some cases the scammers are leaving business cards and supplying quotations by email, requiring a signature prior to work being commenced.
Police understand that these scammers have recently been active in the Sunshine Coast areas. The scammers present in high vis workwear, wearing protective boots and travel in hire vehicles.
The jobs are often completed in record time, however the materials used are of very low quality and the ground is not prepared properly. You end up with an expensive shoddy job.

Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!
We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?
with Jean Larney (nee Dickson)
Jean Larney (nee Dickson born 23.9.1922) lived with her parents who were share farming for the Pattemore family in the share farmer cottage, Mossman” that the Pattemores built. It was situated approximately 400 meters East of Pattemore House. From aged 7 to 23 years in the 1920s and 30s. Before Jean passed away, the Friends of Pattemore House interviewed Jean, who was a passionate gardener and volunteer at Pattemore House, who revealed these lovely memories of her time living on the farm. We have reproduced those memories here.
"Two Queensland nut trees and a large fig tree still mark the spot where the house we lived in as share farmers, Mosman, once stood. Stephen Porter’s father shifted the house to Caloundra in the 1950’s and it has since been demolished. There was a big barn behind the house. It was as big as the house, and was used for storing corn, of which they grew a lot then. The barn now is also gone. The small shed containing wooden feeding stalls for calves and a larger shed, housing the walk-through milking bails (the Fairview Bails) are still there and well preserved. Stumps were used as milking stools and a partial loft covered the milking area, for the storage of corn. The engine room to the side of the milking area also
remains – I remember the electricity being put on in 1940!”
As a youngster, Jean would ride a horse through Porter’s farm, across Dunlop’s flats (the Primary School back oval now) and up the main street to school “ which was then at the top of town”.
After school, Jean picked up the mail and bread, delivering them to Porter’s and Pattemore’s on the way home to Mosman. Then she helped her father to milk the cows.
Her family had the first Friesian cattle herd in Maleny. She remembered the 20 acre Fairview property and gardens very well, describing how the family kept a few cattle, pigs, chooks and ducks for their needs, They also grew lots of vegetables (kohlrabi, cabbage, potatoes, beans, peas, rhubarb, carrots, swedes, turnips, mint and chokos) and fruit (peaches, bananas, persimmons, nectarines, plums, passion fruit, mangoes, mulberries and loquats.
Tamarillos grew wild along the eastern fence. There was also a well maintained pretty flower garden.
The open space between Pattemore House garden and Porters Lane (west of the driveway) was largely planted up with corn for the pigs, and Jean would drop pumpkin seeds in the ground when her father was ploughing the land ready for the corn.
There used to be a chook pen out the back at Pattemores and a shed on the east side of the house. Beyond the back of the house were the bails, but these had gone by 2003.
The back verandah used to be open and persimmons ripened there on a shelf. The wash house was a separate little building outside the back door to the left.
Photo: Jean, as a girl hand feeding the calves at Mosman.
An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
A Liberal Party staffer Ms Brittany Higgins has complained that she was raped at the Federal Parliament House on the 22nd March, 2019 by a staff colleague, Mr Bruce Lehrmann. The circumstances surrounding this incident have from the start been disputed by both parties and should raise questions about behaviour and security at the federal seat of power. The incident allegedly occurred after a self-confessed night of heavy drinking by both parties. They then allegedly returned to Parliament House on the pretext of a work commitment.
From the outset it must be said that NO person should be assaulted, harassed or raped in any place, let alone the workplace. Any person who offends should receive the harshest of penalties from the criminal system of Australia. One must remember that the Australian criminal system is blind and must be determined on the available evidence. It was confirmed that the incident was not reported to police for at least two weeks after the incident. By this time any evidence available to assist in any investigation was gone. Also Australia was by then into a federal government election process.
Ms Higgins then had contact with the media in early 2021, then on February 24th 2021 made an official complaint to police. Shortly after, on the 16th of March 2021 she signed a book contract through Peter FitzSimons for $325,000.
Mr. Lehrmann has always denied that he ever had sex with Ms Higgins. Even before he went on trial for the offence of rape Mr. Lehrmann appeared to have been convicted by the Australian media as it relentlessly reported on the matter and apparently considering Mr Lehrmann guilty. It appears that Mr Lehrmann would have found it difficult to get a “totally fair” trial in view of media pre-trial coverage.
The original trial was aborted in October over juror misconduct, and on Friday it was confirmed plans for a second trial had been abandoned and charges dropped over concerns for Ms Higgins’ welfare.
On December 2nd, 2022 the Director of Public Prosecutions in Canberra confirmed that Mr Lehrmann would not face a retrial in regard to this matter because of concerns for the health of Ms. Higgins. There is no doubt that Ms. Higgins has faced a level of personal attack, especially under cross examination in court. Unfortunately, whilst Mr. Lehrmann will not face a re-trial he will always be known as “the person who got away with the rape of Brittany Higgins in parliament house”, even though he was not convicted.
It now comes to notice that Ms Higgins has been talking to the Federal Government since early 2022 about a multi-million compensation claim, even before the trial was finalised. Just another hit to the Aussie taxpayer because of other peoples bad behaviour. Both people put themselves into this situation and must take some responsibility for this very sad outcome.
… A young fella with his pants hanging half off his arse, no front teeth and a half inch thick gold chain around his neck, walked into the local unemployment office to pick up his benefit money. He strolled up to the counter and said:
"Hi there, you know what... I really HATE claiming benefits, I'd really much rather have a job. I don't like taking advantage of the system and getting something for nothing."
The social worker behind the counter said: "Wow, your timing is excellent. We've just received a job opening from a very wealthy elderly man who wants a chauffeur and bodyguard for his beautiful daughter.
You'll have to drive around in his brand new Mercedes-Benz CL, he'll supply all of your clothes and because of the unsocial hours, meals will be provided free of charge, you'll also be expected to escort his daughter on her overseas holiday trips, but you will also have as part of your job, to satisfy her sexual urges as the daughter is in her mid-20's and has a rather strong sexual appetite."
The guy, jaw dropping and wideeyed said: "You're bull-shittin' me !"
The social worker said: "Yeah, well . . . You started it“.

Selling or buying a property!
If you’re considering a Trust to organise the ownership of your company this series of posts discusses some issues to consider. Following on from the previous post where we looked at the Trust, fiduciary relationships, Beneficiaries and Trustees, now we delve a little deeper.
Discretionary trusts
Discretionary Trusts arise when the Trustee can choose which Beneficiaries receive the Trust property, and how much of the Trust property each Beneficiary gets. The discretion part lies with the Trustee having the option of splitting up the Trust property however they like.
Unit trusts
Unit Trusts in comparison are fixed, express Trusts unlike discretionary Trusts. Unit Trusts allocate the shares in the Trust property for Beneficiaries in the Trust agreement, rather than at the discretion of the Trustee Each Beneficiary is allocated a unit in the trust property as stated in the Trust agreement.
Company ownership
Ownership of a company is allocated through shares. Shares
account for a small percentage of a companies’ ownership. So, if you start a company with a friend and you decide to divide ownership equally, you might decide to start your company by having 1000 shares available to be owned. You and your friend would each receive 500 shares, which you could sell. However, you can arrange it so that a Trustee owns the shares in the company.
Can a Trust Own Shares in a Company?
Legally, a Trust cannot own shares in a company as it is not a separate legal entity, rather a trust is simply a relationship. However, this changes when you consider the Trustee/s and what they can hold for Beneficiaries.
Trustees can own many types of property, including cash and property including company shares for the benefit of Beneficiaries.
So, if you operate your own company, you can set up a trust to hold your shares. If you’re the Trustee, you can distribute the profits from the Trust to yourself.
As with all Trusts, a Trustee cannot be the sole Beneficiary which means you’ll want to appoint other Beneficiaries, such as family members to benefit from the Trust.
If you are considering a trust or company, please seek legal advice before taking action.
Should you have any questions please contact our office on 07 5494 3511 Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 17:00 AEST.
Take care everyone!

With the 2022 year shortly coming to an end, we are regularly asked for our predictions for 2023 as regards home loans and the property market.
Whilst it is always very difficult to predict the future with any degree of accuracy, here are some views that we have picked from discussions with a wide range of experts:
1. Interest rate rises will continue into the first few months of 2023, with rates peaking around the middle of the year as inflation moderates
2. House prices may continue to soften slightly, whilst still remaining well above pre-COVID levels, on account of reduced borrowing capacities for purchasers
3. The property market will still be characterised by plenty of buyer interest in the Sunshine Coast region
So what that means in terms of your home loan is:
1. Continue to make sure that you are on the sharpest interest rate possible to protect yourself in a rising interest rate environment
2. Keep looking out for special offers from lenders, including $4,000 refinance cash back deals and special fixed rates
3. Consider fixed interest rate offers to give certainty of interest rate and repayments for the next 1-3 years
4. If looking to purchase a property in 2023, get a pre-approval in place so that you are fully prepared to negotiate in a softening property market
We would be pleased to discuss the outlook for 2023 with you in further detail as relevant to your own personal circumstances, and are always available 7 days a week.
The latest in Parking Signs at local Airport
The Christmas School holidays is a popular time to travel. This year it is expected that the number travelling will be greater than normal because of the Covid lockdown over the past couple of Christmas travelling periods.
In an effort to deal with the increased numbers airport authorities have introduced some extra areas where passengers can be dropped off.
Just be careful as huge fines apply to those who simply linger a little longer in those areas.

Initially It happens to everyone — the natural process of losing our “baby” teeth to make way for the permanent teeth. As we get older it has a different meaning. Maleny local Florence McBryde has put pen to paper to give her version of this mundane occurrence which has a special meaning at Christmas.
Click the link to listen to the popular novelty Christmas song written in 1944 by Donald Yetter Gardner:
Reclining but not relaxed, I watch words ribbon across the bottom of the silent television screen suspended from the ceiling. I hear the dentist in the background; he’s tapping at his computer, whistling through his teeth behind his mask.
My glasses have been surrendered to the dental nurse, a slight, blonde lass, and I have accepted dark-rimmed Harry Potter ones. “These are a safer option, Flo’,” she had chirruped. No one, not even my nearest and dearest, dares call me ‘Flo’, the diminutive of my name. I’ve been bibbed; I’ve been injected; I’ve been ordered to rinse and spit. Now, clutching a damp tissue, my hackles raised, I lie back to sulk and wait.
The nymph nurse moves aside the swinging light on its extended arm. With gloved hands she rearranges the tray of long-handled dental accoutrements: a tiny round magnifying mouth mirror, suction and drill bits, probes, scalers, fluoride paste and dental floss – an indication of what is in store for me.
I close my eyes ... Dental floss reminds me of my Aunt Helena’s ramshackle farm house in Northern Ireland. I remember running with a raincoat over my head to the chemical toilet in her cobwebby and creepy-crawly-infested outhouse. Inside the house beside the kitchen was a windowless alcove, hidden by a curtain, that served as a bathroom. This musty
space had a stone floor. A tin bath hung on the wall and a straw broom stood in the corner next to a plain wooden chair. The only floor covering was a coiled, plaited- rag rug in front of the marbletopped washstand on which stood a tall enamel jug of water; its companion was a chipped enamel bowl. A striped towel that had seen better days hung on a hook at the side. Above the washstand was a small cupboard with a mirrored door; the bevelled mirror was pocked with black spots. On the narrow shelf below this cupboard was a cracked bar of soap in a blue delft dish, a battered tin of Johnson’s baby powder – although my aunt never had children – and a reel of white sewing cotton. The cotton reel was the wooden type that my brother would use to make a toy tractor. After cutting nicks in it with his penknife he used a matchstick, a slice of candle (for the washer) and an elastic band. Some vigorous winding and his tractor would motor along the kitchen table, much to our delight.
My aunt called cotton ‘thread’. Why did she keep ‘thread’ in the room where she did her ablutions? She used it to clean her teeth. “I do it every night without fail,” she maintained. She was thin as a stick so she probably eschewed sugar and her pearly whites were pretty perfect. You weren’t going to find my aunt’s choppers fizzing in a glass of Steradent overnight; she’d make her teeth last for life; there’d be no litany of dental laments for her!

Now, in my reverie, I have patented my aunt’s brainchild. I have brought her simple invention all the way to Australia. It has been a winner and I have made a mint of money by patenting and marketing dental floss. And ... over the years I’ve saved myself a small fortune on X-rays, fillings, root canals, crowns and implants; I haven’t needed whitening treatments or fissure sealants; haven’t needed an electric toothbrush either; haven’t needed those little thingamajigs that look like tiny bottle brushes you’d find in a tooth fairy’s kitchen. Might they – those miniature brushes are called Piksters – one day supersede my famous patented dental floss? They might even make it obsolete!
“Numbed up yet?” The dentist interrupts my
thoughts. He rolls his chair towards me, snaps on his gloves, and sets to work on my Julia Roberts smile.
Pam Ayres and I have the same regret: for too long we neglected our teeth. She sums it up for us both in this little gem below which she penned in the 70s.
It’s HOT: Remember your Pets Heat risk to your companions and livestock
With a taste of summer in Queensland, RSPCA Queensland is urging pet owners to keep their pets cool with ample shade and water.
The charity is already experiencing a spike in calls regarding pets in heat distress.
“People need to be aware of the dangers to their pets this time of year.
“Animals left in hot cars or tied up in backyards without shade and water can suffer heatstroke and even die in these hot conditions,” says RSPCA Inspector Ben Newman.
In October, RSPCA Queensland received 70 reports of animals left in vehicles from concerned members of the public, the charity expects this number to grow as the warmer weather continues.
The RSPCA’s Top Tips for Keeping Pets Cool ❖
Provide ample shade for your pets in the backyard and multiple water sources. ❖
Never leave pets tethered in backyards – they can get tangled, leaving them unable to reach water and shade. ❖
Keep pet playtime and daily walks to early morning and late afternoon. Avoid hot bitumen for doggy paw pads! ❖
Never leave pets unattended in cars – cars turn into ovens within a matter of minutes. ❖
Make sure dogs in utes have shade, water, and can’t burn their feet on hot trays. ❖
Keep careful eye on brachycephalic (flat face) breeds as they are prone to overheating. ❖
Make sure your livestock, hens and horses all have shade and water too. ❖
Move small pet enclosures for birds, guinea pigs and fish, out of the direct sun.
You can also leave out containers of water to help native wildlife.
If you see an animal in distress, contact the RSPCA’s 24/7 Animal Emergency Hotline. 1300 ANIMAL.

“Circus pulldown and off we go” Maleny - Here I come for Christmas !
Huge congratulations to Claire Harris and Kate Strong from “Hoedowns for Country Towns” for finishing their road trip around Australia teaching line dancing for charity, truely a great pair of Aussies that I was lucky enough to get to spend some time with at Station stay at Mellenbye and in country town Halls throughout WA.
During their 12 months journey they raised funds for Variety - the Children’s Charity NT. In New South Wales funds raised were $2,900 and donated to Sober in the Country Ltd. In Victoria the girls were able to donate $2000 to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation. In Queensland funding went to Aussie Helpers to assist Aussie farmers with food and emotional support.
Wishing you both all the best in your future endeavours ladies and well done on making your dream a reality.
Last Circus show for the year!
Well, I have done my last circus show for the year with The Great Moscow Circus. All done and dusted for 2022 although I’m still camped with them at the moment.
I have made the decision to fly home for Christmas to see family after missing them last year in Darwin. The circus is also looking after Bitsa and Flynette for me over the 2-3 weeks that I’ll be back on the Sunshine Coast on the farm.
I Will be back after Christmas in Perth to join the circus until most likely Easter time when I’ll head across to Adelaide by myself and see where we go from there.
Huge Thank you to the Circus and everyone involved, it really is one big family and in the last 6 months that I’ve been touring WA alongside them it’s been amazing to have raised over $50,000 for my 3 charities.
I look forward to seeing them in the new year. Following our little disappointment in Ellenbrook WA we appeared on Seven News Australia. You can see the interview at: https://www.facebook.com/100047948268058/ videos/512884607530057/?__so__=permalink.

Maleny Community Centre. - 1920.
A group of people gathered outside the entrance to the Maleny School of Arts hall in Maple Street. The community first met to discuss forming a committee, for the establishment of School of Arts at Maleny, on 9th May 1908. Construction began in 1908 on land donated by Mr Thomas C. Dixon of Dixon boot maker fame. This hall burnt down in May 1951 and re-built in 1957. The hall rebuilt in 1957 had a major rebuild in the 2000’s. This hall is now the home for a number of community groups. It is also a central hub for many Maleny events.
