Where are Queensland’s Volunteers
Volunteers are the backbone of many Queensland communities, however, the State of Volunteering in Queensland 2024 Report has revealed a decline in volunteering under the Palaszczuk-Miles Government.
This week, the LNP has announced we will hold a Parliamentary Inquiry into Breaking Down Barriers to Volunteering, if elected in October.
The LNP is committed to empowering Queensland volunteers whose tireless efforts contribute to the vibrant heart of our communities.
We will break down the barriers preventing volunteering by focusing on:
1. Restrictions on volunteering caused by legislation and regulation
2. Current government support for the sector and opportunities for improvement
3. Barriers to volunteering for non-volunteers
4. Current restrictions adversely limiting active volunteers
5. Opportunities for diversification in the volunteer workforce
Volunteers are the heart and soul of our communities, and their contributions won't go overlooked or undervalued under an LNP government.
We will empower our volunteers and our community organisations to continue their vital work in our communities.
Supporting volunteering is a priority for us, because it’s a priority for Queenslanders.

Fisher
Almost eight years ago, you elected me to represent Fisher. I’ve spent every waking hour since fighting for Fisher and delivering for Fisher. As we approach the next Federal Election, I’m fighting for a better future for Fisher families and their businesses by:
Building Better Roads and Rail
• Boosting Mental Health Services and Outcomes
• Backing Small Businesses & Local Manufacturers
• Protecting Australians & Securing Their Future
Since 2016, I’ve been able to secure around $5.8 billion to this end – funding which is now under threat thanks to the dithering, delays and damage of the State and Federal Labor Governments.
Between now and election day, I’ll be fighting for our fair share when it comes to the infrastructure, services and opportunities we need and deserve. And I’ll be fighting to re-elect a Coalition Government with a positive plan for a stronger future.

Private transportation has evolved significantly over the centuries, transforming from humble horse-drawn carriages to sleek electric vehicles equipped with cutting-edge technology. This evolution has been shaped by advancements in engineering, changes in societal needs, and environmental concerns.
Prior to the first settlement in Australia the First Nations people had only the options of walking or canoe to travel. The first European travellers arrived by sailing ships in the late 1700’s.
The first horse arrived with Governor Bowen in 1803 with animal drawn carriages, either for passengers or the transport of goods appearing shortly afterwards, but with few roads, the easiest method of transport was by water.
Understanding the journey of private transportation offers insights into how human mobility has evolved and the challenges and opportunities it presents.
The earliest forms of private transportation date back
thousands of years to when humans domesticated animals for travel. Horse-drawn carriages were the first mode of private transportation, offering mobility to the privileged few. However, it wasn't until the Industrial Revolution that private transportation underwent a significant transformation.
The invention of the steam engine in the 18th century paved the way for steam-powered locomotives and steamships, revolutionising both land and sea travel.
The first steam railway locomotive was introduced by Richard Trevithick in 1804. He was the first engineer to build a successful high-pressure stationary steam engine in 1799 but had many problems to overcome. They were built mainly to work in mines to transport the coal.
The late 19th and early 20th centuries witnessed the rise of the automobile, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of private transportation. With the
invention of the internal combustion engine and the mass production techniques pioneered by Henry Ford, cars became more accessible to the general population. The automobile offered unprecedented freedom and flexibility, enabling individuals to travel farther and faster than ever before.
The first true cars made in Australia were actually steam cars. The first of these steam cars, the Phaeton, was made in 1896 by Herbert Thomson and Edward Holmes of Armadale, Melbourne. Harley Tarrant developed the country's first petrol-driven car in 1901. It was Tarrant's prototype that is widely considered our nation's first car, due to its petrol powered engine, which had a Benz imported motor.
The mid-20th century saw further advancements in private transportation, with the introduction of highways and the expansion of air travel. Interstates and motorways facilitated long-distance travel by car, while commercial airlines made it possible to traverse
continents in a matter of hours. These developments not only made private transportation more efficient but also contributed to the globalisation of trade and culture.
However, the rapid expansion of private transportation came at a cost. Increasing congestion, air pollution, and dependence on fossil fuels raised concerns about the sustainability of current transportation systems. In response, governments and industry leaders began exploring alternative fuels and propulsion technologies to mitigate environmental impact.
The late 20th and early 21st centuries saw the emergence of hybrid and electric vehicles as viable alternatives to traditional gasoline-powered cars. Electric cars, in particular, gained traction due to advancements in battery technology and growing concerns about climate change.
Whilst It is hard to pinpoint the invention of the electric car to one inventor or country. Instead it was a series of breakthroughs -from the battery to the electric motor -- in the 1800s that led to the first electric vehicle on the road. It was not until the
1890’s that electric cars became more practical and commercially available. Companies like Tesla popularised electric vehicles by offering highperformance models with long-range capabilities, challenging the dominance of internal combustion engine vehicles. It should be noted that these cars has replacement batteries as not many people had electricity at the time to recharge the batteries.
One cannot forget public transport. It was In first introduced in London in 1829 by George Shillibeer. He first omnibus service in London using a horse drawn bus services developed in London, Manchester and other cities.
The first buses in Australia were introduced to Sydney and Melbourne and began operating in 1905. They were steam powered, but not very successful because of poor road conditions and the cost. After WW1 private busses were introduces into Australia by returning servicemen, but it was not until the late 1930’s that bus and tram services became more popular.
In addition to technological advancements, the rise of the sharing economy and the advent of ridehailing services like Uber have reshaped the landscape of private transportation. These platforms offer convenient alternatives to traditional car ownership, allowing individuals to access transportation on-demand without the hassle of maintenance or parking.
Another proposal is an “on-demand” technology paired with the availability of public bus operators, particularly with the use of GPS tracking has the potential to make the commute safer and more predictable for the travelling public, especially in larger metropolitan areas coupled with an efficient urban rail system..
The proliferation of electric scooters and bicycles has further diversified urban mobility options, promoting sustainable
transportation solutions in densely populated areas. Looking ahead, the future of private transportation is likely to be shaped by further advancements in autonomous driving technology, connectivity, and mobility services. Self-driving cars promise to revolutionise the way we travel, offering increased safety, efficiency, and accessibility.
Meanwhile, the integration of artificial intelligence and big data analytics will enable transportation systems to become more responsive and adaptive to changing demand patterns.
Artificial intelligence in conjunction with the invention of the internet and GPS tracking has introduced the possibility of flying cars - remember “The Jetsons” of the 1970’s. In 2023 under an experimental status, the first flying electric car has officially been cleared for take off in the United States of America.
However, the evolution of private transportation is not without its challenges. Infrastructure constraints, regulatory hurdles, and societal attitudes toward car ownership will all play a role in shaping the future of mobility. Addressing these challenges will require collaboration between governments, industry stakeholders, and the public
Make Australia Make Again!
to ensure that private transportation remains sustainable, equitable, and accessible for all. In conclusion, the evolution of private transportation has been driven by technological innovation, changing societal needs, and environmental considerations. From horse-drawn carriages to electric vehicles and autonomous cars, the journey of private transportation reflects humanity's quest for mobility and progress. By embracing innovation and sustainability, we can shape a future where private transportation is not only efficient and convenient but also environmentally friendly and inclusive.
Like everything else the form of transport that ordinary Australians use in their everyday life will continue to change as science evolves.
What a change the last two generations of Aussies have seen - from walking and horseback to being able to fly and land on the moon and now even flying cars - what next?

An interesting fact from the RACQ
In the past five years, 995 males died on Queensland roads. That’s triple the number of women.
The Fatal Five offences continue to account for the majority of deaths on our roads – that’s speeding, driving fatigued, drink and drug driving, distracted driving and not wearing a seatbelt.
If we could get drivers to make a commitment to stick to the most basic road rules, we would go a very long way in reducing our heartbreaking road toll. It is a proven fact that almost all road deaths and injuries are preventable. Despite our cars getting safer, drivers continue to make reckless decisions behind the wheel.
Maleny Service Centre have a Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises and we know only too well what it takes to make your vehicle safe and roadworthy.
All vehicles (including trucks, motorbikes and trailers) must have a Safety or Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) if being sold, registered for the first time or being re-registered in Queensland. Registered Vehicles cannot be solid without a RWC.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
Parents
“Are you worried about this?”
Daily following the school day a number of young people ride their scooters and bikes and skate boards down Bunya Street, Maleny from the school towards Maleny township.
At that time the roadway is very busy with all sorts of motor vehicles including school busses and trucks.
Mostly the riders do not wear safety gear or helmets. They ride at speed down the hill, dodging in and out between the vehicles travelling in the same direction.
There appears to be very little attention to other road traffic by those riders.
As a parent are you worried as to the outcome of any accident that might happen to any of those riders?
Whilst I am not aware of any incidents involving any of the riders, it is only a matter of time before one happens as the number of riders appears to be growing as is the confidence of those riders.
At the very least get them to “wear a helmet” - the brain needs all of the protection it can get. Thirty seconds of thrills is not worth the loss of a future if you get injured and it is not worth the hurt passed on if the accident is more serious!!!!
Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”
The Little Rocky Creek Boy Scout’s Camp at Landsborough near Glasshouse Mountains once contained an old timber slab and iron settler’s hut. A bushfire destroyed it few years ago- but its tragic-comic story lives on.
Truthful says that the settler who built it was found in the bedroom one day, his head split with an axe. Top of the list of suspects was his wife, who was a bad-tempered shrew, but she had vanished. The mystery was never solved.
From time to time travellers camped in the abandoned hut, until word got around that it was haunted by a ghostly female figure dressed in a long nightgown. A teamster and his Irish-born wife, who were either ignorant of the story or very brave, moved into the hut soon after. When the teamster was away the wife stayed there alone, apparently untroubled by the ghost.
One cold winter evening a swagman (who knew the hut’s reputation but fancied himself a match for any ghost) came to the hut and, not knowing it was occupied, entered and settled down on his blanket. To his horror a figure appeared at the bedroom door- a woman in a long nightgown. The swaggie was terrified and his first reaction was to run, but his legs refused to move. Then the figure spoke (with an Irish accent and barely disguised mirth): ‘I’ll put no curse on you, man, if you go and chop all the wood that’s outside the door’.
The swagman did as he was told. He had a large pile of wood chopped before his courage returned and he decided he had had enough. He pitched the axe into a hollow tree and headed back to the hut to get his belongings. Inside, he looked over his shoulder and saw the night-gowned figure again, this time standing in the doorway he had just entered. Something looked different about it and when it spoke the Irish lilt was gone. ‘Where's the axe? Where's the axe?’ the figure screamed at him.
‘What does it matter,’ the swagman replied, ‘I’ve chopped all the bloody wood!’ He tossed a bottle at the figure- it passed straight through.
‘I put a curse on you for seven days,’ screamed the shrewish spectre. That was too much for the swaggie, who fainted and fell to the floor. He woke next morning to find the teamster’s wife bending over him.
‘Begorra,’ she said with her soft Irish burr, ‘what a fine job you did with the firewood. Get up man and I'll make you a hearty breakfast.'
When the swagman stood up he felt something long, strange and hairy in his pants leg. He felt inside and discovered the result of the ghost’s curse- he had grown a tail.
The story goes that he took to the hills and was not seen for the next seven days, after which he returned looking normal but swearing never to go near Rocky Creek again in his life.
So all of you ex scouts who attended the Rocky Creek Scout Camp, you just don’t know how lucky you were to leave the place unaffected!

Sunshine Coast Council readies for next summer!
The Sunshine Coast Council's bushfire management program helps to protect and maintain ecosystems in the coast's 7,700 hectares of council environment reserves.
Planned burns usually take place across the region between March and September. Planned burns help to maintain healthy forests and reduce fuel loads before the typical Spring bushfire season. An exact day for a planned burn cannot be provided in advance. Burning is highly dependent on suitable weather and site conditions. These conditions include temperature, soil moisture, humidity, windspeed and wind direction. When a fire can’t go ahead, it will be reassessed against emerging priorities and may be rescheduled.
Advance notice of any upcoming burn will be placed on council’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SunshineCoastCouncil/

Selling or buying a property!
Using a Trust to hold shares in a company With Tove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny
If you’re considering a Trust to organise the ownership of your company this series of posts discusses some issues to consider. Following on from the previous post where we looked at the Trust, fiduciary relationships, Beneficiaries and Trustees, now we delve a little deeper.
Discretionary trusts
Discretionary Trusts arise when the Trustee can choose which Beneficiaries receive the Trust property, and how much of the Trust property each Beneficiary gets. The discretion part lies with the Trustee having the option of splitting up the Trust property however they like.
Unit trusts
Unit Trusts in comparison are fixed, express Trusts unlike discretionary Trusts. Unit Trusts allocate the shares in the Trust property for Beneficiaries in the Trust agreement, rather than at the discretion of the Trustee
Each Beneficiary is allocated a unit in the trust property as stated in the Trust agreement.
Company ownership
Ownership of a company is allocated through shares. Shares
account for a small percentage of a companies’ ownership. So, if you start a company with a friend and you decide to divide ownership equally, you might decide to start your company by having 1000 shares available to be owned. You and your friend would each receive 500 shares, which you could sell. However, you can arrange it so that a Trustee owns the shares in the company.
Can a Trust Own Shares in a Company?
Legally, a Trust cannot own shares in a company as it is not a separate legal entity, rather a trust is simply a relationship. However, this changes when you consider the Trustee/s and what they can hold for Beneficiaries.
Trustees can own many types of property, including cash and property including company shares for the benefit of Beneficiaries.
So, if you operate your own company, you can set up a trust to hold your shares. If you’re the Trustee, you can distribute the profits from the Trust to yourself.

March April and into May are big vegetable planting months in SE Qld. Try tomatoes, capsicums and eggplants; lettuce; radish; beetroot and silverbeet; beans; cucumber and zucchini; cabbage, broccoli; turnip, onion, garlic. The great thing about lettuce is that it can work for most seasons in Brisbane.
Autumn is the perfect time to fertilise your garden, including your lawn as the soil is still warm and moist from summer rains. Fertilising at this time will help your plants to get a healthy start as they enter the winter months.
Some good news for coffee drinkers is that if you fertilise green plants, such as lettuce and spinach, with a coffee substrate, the yield will be higher due

Provided you don't have frost, you can also get away with growing a lot of veggies that would normally be considered summer crops in the colder latitudes.
Don't forget that the coming months are traditionally associated with low rainfall and desiccating winds are still ahead. Keep valuable plants watered and top up mulch if it's been depleted over summer.

Maleny Senior Citizens visit Pomona’s Majestic Theatre
The Majestic Picture Theatre in Pomona is rare as it is one of the few pre-World War II picture theatres remaining in Queensland and is also the longest continuously theatre in the state. It is also. the only theatre in the world that continuously screens silent films.
From the 1910s until the advent of television rural theatres provided an important social service to people in the surrounding area, including stimulus for the imagination, relief from isolation, and a link with the wider community.
It is believed that on the 28th April 1931 the first talkie, or movie recorded with its own soundtrack, was shown at the hall.
most popular silent films shown since 1987 include The Son of the Sheik, the original Raymond Longford production of Dad and Dave in On our Selection, and Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Cooper in The Kid.
No silent movie theatre would be complete without an organ being played enthusiastically, setting the mood of the movie. The current organ console, the only one in a Queensland theatre, is located to the left of the stage and is an electrical 1937 Compton. It came from the Regal Cinema in South Shields, Chester England. It’s has been rebuilt, commencing in 2006 by John Brooks and Don Clark. The pipe chamber, which also contains a bank of 1930s electrical organ switches from the Theatre Royal in Halifax and the three ranks of Christie pipes in the chamber were originally from a theatre in Dunedin, New Zealand.
“This now is the only authentic silent picture theatre fully operating as a silent picture theatre in the world" said past owner, Ron West
The busiest period for the theatre was during World War II, when a Tank Attack (anti-tank gun) Regiment was stationed near Pomona. The troops had priority for seats, and local civilians were irate when they could not get in.
The theatre remained popular after the war, and throughout the 1940s to the 1960s when films were shown on Wednesday and Friday evenings and Saturday afternoon, with a cartoon and two movies for four shillings and sixpence.
In 1987 Ron West, the then theatre owner was asked to show a silent movie to a group of travel agents, and since he possessed a print of the 1926 film The Son of the Sheik, starring Rudolf Valentino, he ran the film and accompanied it with his restored Wurlitzer pipe organ, making up the music as he went along. Ever since the theatre has become known as “the theatre that shows silent movies”. The
The Maleny Senior Citizens Group decided to relive their past and go to the movies. Travelling by bus they visited the Majestic Theatre at Pomona. The trip brought back many memories of long past years of when the Saturday afternoon matinee was eagerly awaited for all week.
The Maleny Senior Citizens group meets weekly for social activities and localised bus trips. For those who wish, Ttey also meet Friday nights and go out for a meal. Why not join the fun. For further information ring Margaret on 0419179516.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers
Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..
Queensland Fire & Emergency Service ceases to exist
New legislation passed on May 2, 2024 will see the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, which involves the Rural Fire Brigade cease to exist in the present form.
The changes will also see Queensland Police Service take on primary responsibility for the state’s expanded disaster and emergency coordination functions, with the State Emergency Service along with Marine Rescue Queensland expected to transition to QPS in June 2024.
The new laws will establish QFR and RFSQ as two separate fire services under the umbrella of the newly created QFD set to take effect from July 1, 2024. These new reforms will herald a new era for fire services in Queensland.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Acting Commissioner Steve Smith said; It will also mean committed budgets for RFSQ and QFR, and dedicated leadership with experience for each service in the urban and rural environment.”
The RFSQ would see a significant increase in funding and resources, including 146 paid rural fire service positions throughout the state to support the volunteer base.
It is anticipated that the new laws and changes will help create a stronger, safer, more resilient Queensland through better aligned and dedicated services to build our state’s resilience, prevention and response at a time when the number of major disaster events continues to grow.

Maleny Singers take their production to traditional styles
For any Maleny Singers production, costumes form a big part of the visual delights for the audience. So when a comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan, The Mikado, was chosen as this year's show, sourcing genuine Japanese kimonos was a priority, as these spectacular Mikado costumes carry Japanese dance tradition.
In faraway Oda, a tiny town in the prefecture of Shimane, Lives Mrs Masako Arito, a lady who has a lifelong study of Nihon-buyo, the art of Japanese classical dance.
Having heard from her daughter in Australia of the performance, she decided to gather as many kimonos as possible, and spread the word to her dance group, and other dance teachers in the area.
With amazing generosity, over 50 kimonos, belts and accessories emerged from both personal collections and performance wardrobes which were shipped to Australia.
Some of these kimonos have been worn on the big stage in Japan and some are personal treasures now being shared with Maleny. Each costume is truly special and will delight anyone who sees the show.
The Mikado will be performed at the Maleny Community Centre on 8, 9, 15, 16 June — tickets from https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1202355

“Thanks Dad”
One thing I’m eternally grateful for is how my old man taught me the art of conversation growing up.
For something that in principle is so simple, can be so complicated, from being able to flirt with someone without hitting on them or meaning anything other than to compliment them on an outfit or a mannerism, to having a chat with someone working a retail job that breaks the boredom of their standard daily conversations with their regular customers.
Everytime I have a chat with someone working one of those jobs behind a counter or a till I always finish the conversation with “I hope your shift goes quickly”, something so simple to say but it really leaves a good impression when said in the right way after being able to make that person feel good about themselves, if you can make even just one persons day just that little bit brighter, then the day has not been one that’s gone to waste.
The art of conversation, very much something worth learning.
Make sure that you look after your matesTreat them all well!.

“Now almost on the home run!”
Once I’ve finished Tassie in the coming weeks, I’ll be heading back across to the mainland and begin my final stretch through VIC/NSW and then to QLD where I’ll finally finish my lap. I will be not only the youngest person to ever circumnavigate Australia on a Tractor but also know in my heart that I’ve done my best to help as many as I can, which to me personally is infinitely more valuable.
Then it’s onto my next big adventure, to raise even more and help even more people.
On my Voyage to Tassie I was privileged enough to get to have a yarn or two with most of the crew including the hardworking men who run the engine rooms of these huge Ro-Ro ships (roll on roll off) and was invited to go down to see these huge beasts of motors for myself.
The crew also raised $1000 for the donation tins!.

This photo shows Mr Jones and party of two women and a man, standing near Mr Cook's car on bridge at Maleny in 1932. Unfortunately there is no other information accompanying the photo. It would be interesting to know the circumstances surrounding the taking of this photo and who the people in it are.
It is also of interest to note the pole and wires beside the bridge. From the look of the insulators and post it would first appear that the post is a telephone connection. Insert shows closer up photo of the people in the photo below.
