What do you want our district to look like? The Sunshine Coast Council has started the complex process to form a new planning scheme before 2024. In partnership with the community, council will spend the next few years developing a new planning scheme to shape future land use and development across the region.

what you can do with your land and what your neighbour can do with theirs

A planning scheme is a set of planning principles prepared by council to guide what can be built and where. It is about making sure the right development happens in the right locations.

The Sunshine Coast hinterland around the Maleny area is a very special place to live and if we want to ensure that our area remains as the very liveable area that we have enjoyed then it is important that the Sunshine Coast Council gets their new planning scheme right. Already we are starting to see some changes in our area that do not go well with our perception of the future.

Planning schemes apply to land that you own or rent and affects

The planning scheme is, and will continue to be, the key tool to

assist council in responding to growth management challenges. The new planning scheme is intended to be in place by 2024 and the Council has now appointed a Planning Scheme Project Community Reference Group. The members provide a broad representation, from a range of areas of interest, gender, age groups, communities and locations across our region. You need to play your part and make submissions to Council about how you wish to see our area developing in the future.

“Organoil Pure Tung Oil” https://prep-productions.com/product-item/puretung-oil/#toggle-id-7-closed

Pure Tung Oil is obtained from the seeds of the tropical Tung Tree. As a timber nish, it is widely used as a drier in varnishes and paints. The nish is suitable for interior or protected exterior use than fully exposed exteriors, due to its lack of UV Resistance.

A speci c range of colours in a water based paint which also contains a primer sealer inbuilt speci cally canned for the Maleny area will soon be available at Maleny Paint Supplies.

Organoil Pure Tung Oil Organoil tung oil is 100% Pure Natural Tung Oil and is obtained by pressing the seeds from the nut of the tung tree. It is suitable for timber, concrete, terracotta, stone & mud brick.

Colours such as “Maleny Mud”, “Witta White”, “Baroon Blue” are just a few of the colours that will be available.

Once dry Tung Oil is both FOOD and CHILD-SAFE. It is designed for Internal use only, but can be used on woodworking, furniture, joinery and other non-traf c feature timbers such as wall/ceiling panelling and exposed beams.

The paint in the can is an ultra premium water based paint that is Australian owned and made.

Organoil has a matt sheen nish and can be applied by either brush or roller. Expected coverage is about 12 sq mt per lt. Two thin coats should be applied. If a coat too thick is applied then it may remain “tacky” because oil dries from inside out to the external surface, so a thick coat prevents drying. It can be purchased in 1lt or 4lt volumes.

This is just another service available locally.

The physical description & colour of pure Tung Oil is a pale amber coloured liquid and has no odour and no signi cant health risk factors have been found for this product. Tung oil is a 100% natural product. UV resistant, can be used on both soft and hard woods and is environmentally friendly.

Funeral Parlour approved for Mt View Road

Speak Up Now - Stop Domestic & Family Violence Maleny Blackall Range

FREE TRAINING AVAILABLE

Michael and Caroline Arnett had applied to the Sunshine Coast Council to develop an Event Centre at 57 Mt View Road, Maleny. This establishment would host events such as weddings, birthday celebrations, business meetings and funerals.

If anyone knows of any local hairdressers, barbers, beauticians, or massage therapists, who would like to undertake a free short online training course which takes less than one hour to equip them to help any of their clients who may be a victim of Domestic Violence or Elder Abuse. Please ask them to contact Ms Val France via her facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ 113191415876533/user/833421838/

A a council meeting in 2019 the application was rejected following the receiving by council of a large number of negative submissions. Most of these submissions complained about the future increase in the volume of traf c in the area, especially along the already busy Mt. View Road which is popular with visiting tourists.

These types of businesses within the hinterland region could soon act as a safe zone for domestic violence victims, thanks to new funding. These types of establishments are places where people are more likely to discuss problems that they may be facing. Hair salons could also act as safe zones where victims can go and leave their house without their abusers.

Applicant Caroline Arnett described the desired centre as a “life celebration venue”.

The Speak Up Now - Stop Domestic and Family Violence group has a Sunshine Coast Regional Council Grant to pay for the training of up to 30 more local professionals in the Maleny area and across the Blackall Range.

Following an application by the applicants to the Planning and Environmental Court the application was approved by the court albeit with a number of conditions relation to the operation of the Centre. Some easing of other restrictions for this type of establishment such as landscape rehabilitation and fauna management have been lessened.

Outcomes for the individual is recognised accreditation, complimentary membership of Hairdressers with Hearts which is an accredited training group, resources for the salon, and referral and other resources to have on hand for clients.

The centre will be able to hold up to two funeral services each day.

Some locals have already completed the training and highly recommend it. One local professional said “I highly recommend every individual in our industry to take advantage of this training opportunity”.

The site will not be the location of a traditional type funeral parlour. The applicants envisage that the premises will be a beautiful building built in sympathy with the surrounding natural area.

This has neighbour, John O’Reilly when they were at come at a great cost to many Queensland small the Maleny Pub the other night. businesses, especially those in the tourist industry. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk along with her Chief Medical Of cer Dr. Jeannette Young have been at pains to reiterate that the complete lockdown was in the best interest of Queenslanders health. At this point it should be pointed out that Queensland has been spared a lot of the suffering that other states have had to endure. Has this been because of good luck or because of good decisions. Events such as weddings, funerals and other family happenings have had to be scaled down, but Suncorp stadium and the Gabba have hosted events that have seen packed houses. During Queenslands lockdowns NRL football players' wives and girlfriends have been granted entry into the state direct from Covid-ravaged Sydney whilst Queensland residents were being turned away, some of those turned away appeared to have had very compelling reasons to return. When it comes to Covid-19 Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the buck stops with the chief health of cer. These are Dr Young’s decisions, and hers alone. I always thought that the Captain of the ship took responsibility for the major decisions after receiving all the best advice and having been given the options available. The lack of consistency and breathtaking hypocrisy with regard to some of the decisions by the Premier are hard to fathom. Maybe the best medical advice is that sports people and their entourages do not catch COVID nor spread it to the rest of the community. It appears that there is one law for one person but does not apply to others who are more fortunate. The Premier is using the safety of children as a pretence to keep borders closed Some of the decisions made appear to have been made for purely political purposes and to draw attention away from other government business that is causing concern. The only thing that is certain is “The Genie Cannot Be Put Back Into The Bottle.”

Collard’s Curse “A saviour for the Dairy industry!” Right from the start Maleny’s future was based on the dairy industry.

“Collard’s Curse,” however it helped the farmers survive many a dry period.

Alfred Collard purchased “Cedar Park” from J.D. Gay circa 1919 and dairy farmed there and it is there that future generations of the Collard Family grew up. The future generations of the Collard family had very close ties to the dairy industry in the Sunshine Coast hinterland area. This included being directors of the then Maleny Dairy Association Butter Factory.

Many of the Maleny dairy farming families originally came from the Northern Rivers areas of New South Wales. In that area kikuya grass was well known.

Originally the grasses were based on paspalum pastures. One of the problems with paspalum pastures was that during the winter periods it dried off and that forced farmers to hand feed their dairy cattle. Hand feeding often became a very expensive alternative. In 1920, following the 1919 drought Alfred Collard brought 8 runners of KiKuYu grass and thus began Maleny’s and the Dairy Industry’s long association with what became known by those with gardens or cultivations as

and soft leaf and is quick to recover in the heat. The texture of the lawn is quite soft and is a lighter lime green in colour when compared to other varieties. Because it requires very little maintenance and could withstand the winter months and had acceptable drought tolerance making it perfect as a stock food. This grass was not available in the Maleny area at that time. In 1918 Alf Collard re-visited the Northern Rivers area and he brought back eight kikuyu runners. From those eight runners it wasn’t too long before kikuyu grass began to spread through local paddocks.

kikuya grass is a member of the Poaceae grass family and was imported from South Africa were being trialled by members involved in the dairy industry.

It was not uncommon to see kids from the various local dairy farms out in rain storms madly planting kikuyu grass runners.

“With kikuyu, paddocks could be loaded up with stock and it persists.

Because Kikuyu grass is so highly invasive of surrounding garden beds it was given the nick-name of “Collar’s Curse” by some people normally those not involved in the dairy industry.

Kikuyu is a perennial groundhugging grass which spreads by runner and is an aggressive grower. The Kikuyu Grass is characterised by a very succulent

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Meets up with Leigh Kernaghan”

Whilst at the Mt Isa Rodeo recently it was great to catch up with some great Aussies such as Leigh Kernaghan and Johnathon Thurston.

My rst dose of P zer is done ,

II met Johnathon behind the chutes at the Rodeo and I met up with Leigh Kernaghan and The Wolf Brothers backstage at the Rodeo Concert. All of these Aussie icons are plugging my fundraising.

I’m gonna need it to keep travelling Australia at this rate I’m aware that I’m probably gonna cop a fair few messages and comments from people about microchips in my brain and that I shoulda wrapped my akubra in tin foil to protect myself from the aliens. I’ll let you know later.

Mt Isa Coppers dig deep for Dolly + the RFD Massive thanks to the Mt Isa police for raising over $1,000 towards Dollys Dream and the RFDS last night at one of their social events. They literally lled the tins till they couldn’t t anymore in.

Here's to a cheeky-faced young Australian with a big heart and n even bigger dream. Bon voyage from Maleny, and safe travels Sam. You can follow Sam’s adventures via his Facebook Page at “The Travelling Jackaroo” https://www.facebook.com/ thetravellingjackaroo

It was good to hear some interesting yarns from them about the job and to see them not as coppers but as ordinary blokes and sheilas out of uniform like you and me.

Sams proposed route - Maleny to Maleny!

Be a real “Mate” Make sure that you look after your mates - Treat them all well!.
