Conondale Girl to raise funds for Aussie Farmers doing it tough!!

What is it about the Sunshine Coast Hinterland? First it was the Travelling Jackaroo and now it is Jade Catania to raise funds for their favourite causes.

A

17 year old girl from Conondale is setting herself the task of helping to raise funds for Aussie farmers who are doing it

Jade is very driven to create her own business based on the creation of a card game, selling it through the internet to raise funding to support her charity for farmers and their families.

Even when they get a good season and all is looking great for farmers, last minute hurdles such as the tornado like storm that tore through the Lockyer Valley near Gatton last Friday devastating crops is heart-breaking to farming families who rely on that one crop to get them through the coming season.

The idea came to Jade as a result of her early childhood, when she was 6 years old and with her family she travelled around Australia in an old school bus that was converted into a motorhome.

tough.

In this one storm 10’s of millions of dollars of crops ready to harvest were decimated in minutes leaving farmers in despair. Seventeen year old Jade Catania from Conondale knows just too well the pressure that this devastation places on a family. Farming families throughout Australia all have similar stories to tell and so much of it is caused by matters out of their control.

On their trip they met a lot of people, many of whom were farmers. On occasions Jade and her family stayed with them on their properties. There she and her family learnt about the ups and downs of gardening and farming. Thus the seeds were planted about developing a card game based on what she had learnt about the dif culties that farmers faced. In one instance the farmer was “hit by a ood” and lost all of his crop, and he was just one of dozens in just that locality The game, Epic Garden is not only a fundraiser, but is a tool to teach young people just how much farmers do and just how much we all rely on them for our foods. To teach them that food does not just come

Jade said, “It’s crazy to think this is what thousands of Aussie farmers go through just to make a living.” She continued, “when you buy a copy of Epic Garden, not only are you helping support me, but you will also be helping farmers suffering from the drought, as I will be donating $1 of every game sold to farmers in need. With help from Dad, I took about 2 years of development before I was completely satis ed with the nal product.

I have trialled the game on many of my friends and family and they all agreed that it was not only a fun game, but taught them about the plight of farmers families. Who knows, even a lot of adults might learn a bit about the tribulations of our country cousins Now that the game is ready, Jade’s aim is to travel around to as many schools as possible, and show kids the Epic Garden game, so they become aware of the challenges farmers are facing. All while teaching kids about farming and gardening in a fun way. The costing of my initial production run is approximately $10,000. The expected delivery date is just prior to Christmas. With Christmas coming up this game would make a great Christmas present for the younger members of your family. Australia has always been anti-nuclear. Arguments include that apart from being extremely expensive, it generates large amounts of waste and is an in exible energy source. Furthermore, Australia will be starting from “worse than scratch” since it never had a nuclear industry in the rst place. Why is it so!

One of the primary reasons for Australia's aversion to nuclear power is the legacy of nuclear testing. In the mid-20th century, Australia served as a test site for nuclear weapons, with multiple tests conducted on its soil. With the agreement of the Australian Government, Britain tested atomic weapons at three sites on Australian territory: the Montebello Islands off Western Australia, and Emu Field and Maralinga in South Australia. The testing took place from 1952 to 1963, mostly at Maralinga. In total seven bombs were tested. Much of the traditional land used for the blasts at Maralinga remains radioactive and off limits to this day. Survivors suffered from higher rates of cancer than the general population due to their exposure to radiation. A less well-documented point is the plight of the Aboriginal people who were living close to Maralinga at the time, many of whom died at a young age.. The lasting environmental and health consequences of these tests have left a deep scar on the nation's collective memory, creating a signi cant distrust of anything nuclear. This historical baggage has fuelled the sentiment that nuclear power is not worth the risks it may pose.

fi

fi

fi

https://issuu.com/Maleny-Grapevine-Community-News

Environmental concerns also play a pivotal role in Australia's resistance to nuclear power. Many Australians believe that the country is blessed with an abundance of renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, and geothermal power. They argue that these sources are not only safer but also more sustainable in the long term, making nuclear power appear unnecessary. Furthermore, the spectre of nuclear accidents like Chernobyl and Fukushima has raised fears about potential mishaps in a country as ecologically diverse as Australia. In 1986 a nuclear accident destroyed the Chernobyl 4 reactor in Russia, killed 30 operators and remen within three months and many more further deaths later. This was the most serious accident ever to occur in the nuclear power industry. Today, there is still concern about contamination of the soil with strontium-90 and caesium-137, which have halflives of about 30 years.. There is a high rate of thyroid cancer among children who were less than 15 years old at the time and who were exposed to the radiation after the disaster. In March 2011, Japan was shaken by what became known as the Great East Japan (Tohoku) Earthquake which resulted in a tidal wave swamping the Fukushima Nuclear power station causing a major nuclear accident. It is possible that a large area around the Fukushima nuclear power plant will be uninhabitable for at least another 100 years. Even so, these are the only major accidents to have occurred in over 18,500 cumulative reactor-years of commercial nuclear power operation in 36 countries. Another accident that occurred at the Three Mile Island , USA in 1979 where the reactor was severely

ustralia, a nation known for its vast landscapes, abundant natural resources, and progressive policies, has long maintained an aversion to nuclear power. This reluctance to embrace nuclear energy is rooted in a complex web of historical, political, and environmental factors. While nuclear power has proven to be a reliable and low-carbon energy source in many countries, Australia has largely shunned its development.

damaged, but radiation was fully contained and there were no adverse health or environmental consequences. Australia's strong anti-nuclear sentiment is also in uenced by its political landscape. The nation's political parties have traditionally been polarised on the issue, making it dif cult to build a broad consensus. In a country where coal mining and export play a signi cant role in the economy, politicians have often been reluctant to invest in alternative energy sources, including nuclear power. Public opinion and community resistance have also played a part in keeping nuclear energy at bay. Australians are generally well-informed about the environmental and safety concerns surrounding nuclear power. This has led to widespread protests and public campaigns against the development of nuclear facilities, which further deters political leaders from pursuing such projects. Despite these hurdles, some argue that Australia should reconsider its stance on nuclear power. Proponents of nuclear energy argue that it could help the country reduce its carbon emissions signi cantly, especially in the face of climate change challenges. They contend that with modern safety measures and technological advancements, the risks associated with nuclear power have been minimised. Ironically, although the Australian Federal government has recently signed deals to obtain nuclear powered submarines to take the defence of Australia into the future there are two separate pieces of Commonwealth of Australia legislation – the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Act 1998 and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 – which expressly prohibit the approval, licensing, construction, or operation of a nuclear plant. This does appear at odds with public sentiment as a nation operating nuclear submarines needs a

fi

fi

fi

nuclear industry to train people to operate this type of equipment, either civil or defence related. In conclusion, Australia's aversion to nuclear power is deeply ingrained in its history, politics, and environment. While there are valid concerns about the safety and environmental impact of nuclear energy, it is essential for Australia to revisit its stance on this issue, given the growing global need for clean and reliable energy sources. To strike a balance between environmental concerns and energy security, the nation should engage in open and informed discussions about the future role of nuclear power within its energy mix. There are risks involved in all human activities, not just nuclear power generation. Actions taken to mitigate a situation should not result in worse impacts than the original events. This is particularly important when managing the response to incidents at nuclear facilities where fear of radiation may lead to an overly conservative assessment and a lack of perspective for relative risks. All levels of government have found to their detriment that the longer it takes to build something the more likely it is that real costs will increase rather than decrease, it’s very clear that nuclear is going to nd it very challenging to compete against renewables, even on a nancial basis. Besides, nuclear power stations are expensive and take too long to build, normally taking 10 plus years to construct.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions We have recently learned about the tragic deaths of two toddlers found in a car at a home in the Central Queensland town of Woorabinda. Whilst it is not yet known just how the toddlers ended up shut in the vehicle, it is just one of a number of tragic events of very recent years where young toddlers have tragically died after being enclosed in vehicles in hot weather. Any death of a toddler is tragic, however in 2022 alone, 2022 gures being the latest presently available, 33 toddlers in Australia died under similar conditions. When a child is left in a vehicle, that child's temperature can rise quickly — and the situation can quickly become dangerous. Heatstroke begins when the core body temperature reaches about 104 degrees. This can result in heatstroke, dehydration, suffocation and even death. On a hot day, the temperature inside a parked car can be as much as 40 degrees hotter than it is outside. And when cars are parked, it takes less than 5 minutes for them to heat to temperatures that can seriously harm children. It is hard to understand that a parent can hear about a child dying in a hot car, and still choose to leave their own, or an other infant unattended in a car, out of their sight, even just for a few precious moments. When a toddler is left unattended, not only is there the extreme risk of heat-associated death or injuries, but cars do get stolen thus adding further risk to the unattended toddler. A lot can happen in the space of a minute or two. Some other things that may occur include be involved in a car crash, choke on toys they may have or food.

And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t” That he recently attended the wedding ceremony of his nephew in Maleny. The pastor asked if anyone had anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom, it was their time to stand up and talk, or forever hold their peace. The moment of utter silence was broken by a young beautiful woman carrying a child. She started walking toward the pastor slowly. Everything quickly turned to chaos. The bride slapped the groom. The groom's mother fainted. The groomsmen started giving each other looks and wondering how best to help save the situation. The pastor asked the woman, "Can you tell us why you came forward? What do you have to say?" The woman replied, "We can't hear at the back.” Note: Too many people get their exercise by jumping to conclusions!

Timely Warning for Pets

A parent or carer inadvertently leaves their toddler in their car to do a very short term task then due to short-term memory failure caused by extreme exhaustion, stress or a change in routine the toddler is forgotten altogether.

A neighbour had to take their family cat to an after-hours veterinary surgery in the middle of the night a couple of weeks ago. At great cost it was found that the cat had been attacked by a tick.

Whenever you leave your car it is simple to go through a simple mental check list of things that should be with your out loud. For example, ‘Baby, keys, wallet, phone’.

Staff for Maleny Veterinary Services in Coral Street, Maleny have issued a timely warning for those with pets.

Sometimes children are left in cars because they’ve been accidentally locked in so keep keys with you at all times to prevent them getting locked inside the car.

With the relatively mild winter and and now the warm weather; this is the ideal time for ticks to be out in force.

If you need to ll your car with petrol, plan to do this when your child isn’t with you or when you have another adult with you to mind the child.

Ticks can cause severe illness and, unfortunately, often death. . Be sure your pets are up to date with their tick prevention.

Never leave your children alone in a car. No excuses, no ifs, no buts and no exceptions.

An accident in your home: Occupier’s Liability

Friday, 17 November 2023

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny An accident causing someone injury in your home does not necessarily mean that you as the occupier is liable for that injury. As an occupier you are only liable if an accident is caused by your failure to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect the person being injured. The key words are ‘reasonable care’. As you may have suspected already there is no hard and fast rule about what amounts to ‘reasonable care’ or lack of such care. It depends very much on the nature of the premises, the type of danger and the reason for entry. An example is a defective staircase in a house would be a danger to most people but would not be a danger to the tradesperson engaged to x the staircase. You may think that provided that your visitor has been warned of the danger then this would be suf cient to protect you from liability. However a warning is not always suf cient to protect you from liability. The occupier’s duty

is to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect your visitor from danger – not simply to warn your visitor of the danger. Sometimes a warning may be suf cient but other times not depending on the type of danger. What of a person who enters your premises without your permission – a trespasser? The law holds that if you know or you have reason to suspect that a trespasser is on your premises, you have a duty to that trespasser to take reasonable care to protect that person from injury. This duty does vary depending on the circumstances. An example here would be the requirement on you to fence a pool to prevent a child trespasser from being injured or drowned. Finally, a landlord has a statutory duty, under the Residential Tenancies Act (Qld) 1994, to keep premises in good order and repair. A landlord may be liable if a tenant is injured on the premises, the injuries occurred as a result of the landlord’s failure to

repair defects and the landlord knew o f defects.

Who Gives A Crap? -

We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets? We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under ve dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Pro ts from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

News

“Getting to the Top”

“Christmas already here!”

….. continuing on with my mission!

I'm proud to announce formally that my plans for once I nish this trip in about nine months time are going to be building and running a mobile travelling museum on Australian history.

This will include a key focus on outback and rural people and rural objects, as well as various aspects of travelling people of Australian including showman, swagman, Circus workers and several others typer of rural workers. Through this museum I will still be fundraising for my charities and will incorporate aspects of those

charities into the museum as well. By doing this I hope that people will continue to relate to my fundraising efforts. I believe that it is important that I continue, not only the fundraising, but continue raising an awareness for those charities. Unfortunately, it is that bloody time of year again….. when all the radio stations start playing bloody Christmas music. That means that is will only be a couple of weeks before the major supermarkets begin to advertise their “hot cross buns”.

Who

Remembers

this?

Maple Street, Maleny 1940’s. This photo was taken by the Larney Family on Maple St Maleny, looking west in about 1940. Waddell's Shop was on left, where the Nagy Building now stands. Then there was the Willow Cafe, (owned by Guy & Clarice Cuthbertson), School of Arts, Shaw's Bakery, Maleny Chemist, The Porters Building then Sallaway's Boarding House. The School of Arts & Bakery burnt down in 1951. The Bakery at the time of the re was owned by Cos Freeleagus and his family. This family was from Greece and was related to the Freeleagus family who had cafes in Brisbane, including the, for the time, famous Astoria Cafe. Notice the density of traf c owing up and down the street, oh, just to be able to take a trip back in time and once again enjoy Malenys tranquility.
