An exciting opportunity for Maleny District Tourism ventures Bonza Airline is the latest carrier to join the regional travel market, announcing it will y 25 routes to 16 destinations. The Sunshine Coast Airport will be a major base and headquarters for a new regional airline, Bonza Airline.

Along side airlines like Rex and QantasLink Bonza Airlines will join the market. The airline will not service capitol cities except for Avalon Airport in Melbourne. An airline spokesperson said, “The ights open up new markets for the region's tourism industry, locals will have the opportunity to explore their own backyard with ultra-low fares.

Created last October, Bonza Australia is an independent carrier from former Virgin Australia executive Tim Jordan and has gained substantial nancial backing from US investment rm.

This brings new opportunities for tourism type activities within the Sunshine Coast hinterland with ights operating out of the Sunshine Coast airport. Bonza is initially expected to operate 37 ights per week on 12 new routes from Sunshine Coast Airport and will have three aircraft based on the Sunshine Coast. This might just be the “shot in the arm” local tourist activities needs to help overcome the resistance for locals tourists travelling due to concern for the present Covid situation. Bringing in approximately an extra 370,000 seats into the Sunshine Coast the airline is expected to generate around $86million in visitor expenditure in the region in the rst 12 months of ights. Bonza customers will have to pay for food service and any checked baggage. Bonza Airline has decided to go paperless with the launch of its own app which will be part of a broader focus on customer experience and sustainability. Flights are not yet on sale. Sunshine Coast Council Garden Organic Bin Sunshine Coast Council aims to be a zero net emissions organisation and send no waste to land ll by 2041 by reducing, reusing and recycling. Our research shows 55% of items in an average general waste bin is organic material that could be repurposed.

Garden organics bin Mulching garden waste for reuse, instead of dumping it, will divert organic waste from our land lls and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In July 2022, we are therefore expanding our garden organics bin service to all households for: lawn clippings. & weeds. leaves and other organic garden materials. Community feedback received from the 2021 ‘Our Future Waste’ survey revealed overwhelming support for an expanded garden organics collection service to contribute to a better and more sustainable future. We thank the Sunshine Coast community for their overwhelming support for the introduction of this service, which is also our rst step towards implementing a Food Organics and Garden Organics bin service.

Next steps Your new garden organics bin will be delivered to your property later this year, ready for collection services to begin in July 2022.

Ecological Park - Maleny Sunshine Coast Council is now putting together a group of local residents with innovative, creative and visionary ideas and expertise to help guide the transformation of a stunning 65 hectare property near Maleny, into the Sunshine Coast Ecological Park which will complement the neighbouring Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. The project is now moving into an exciting new phase . Council will plan and create an ecological park like no other so it’s important we establish a core group of people to provide expert advice to ensure this green space continues to evolve. The proposed ecological park is located within Mountain View, one of the Sunshine Coast’s ve major green spaces which includes the Regional Inter-urban Break, Blue Heart Sunshine Coast, Lower Mooloolah River and the Coast. Division 5 councillor Winston Johnston said the proposed ecological park would help build on the green spaces initiative which contributed to the region’s identity and liveability.

Eligible households can apply for an exemption.

“This council continues to prioritise green spaces across our region to accommodate our current residents and those who will choose to call Sunshine Coast home in the future. As the region grows in population, so should our green spaces.”

For information on the exemption criteria and answers to other frequently asked questions please visit

To learn more about the proposal, visit Sunshine Coast Council’s website

The 240 litre garden organics bin will be emptied fortnightly, on the alternate week to your recycling bin for a cost of around $35 per year (subject to change). Already have a garden organics bin? Good news, your annual fees will reduce to the new rate!

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions Over a number of years the present Queensland Government has been dodging claims of a lack of integrity and in the past six months these claims have increased markedly with alleged serious integrity issues being exposed on a daily basis – quite rightly fuelling public cynicism. These claims have been coming from very senior bureaucrats working within the Government ranks - not some lower or middle class bureaucrat. Nor only is the seniority of these whistleblowers a major cause for concern, but the alleged length of time over which they have been happening. Those reforms have been called for to improve accountability and standards and create a better and safer workplace. The Of ce of the Premier should also explain to the people of Queensland why there is a need for her of ce to have at least 30 media people solely in that of ce alone to present propaganda to the people of Queensland. Much has been said about the operations of the state’s Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) following its failed investigations into a number of Local Government Councils. So much so that the head of the CCC, Mr Alan MacSporran resigned after a parliamentary committee found that the CCC failed to act independently and impartially. After denying a need for an inquiry of so long, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has now announce that there will be held into the state’s Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC). The Premier also announced that there would not be an inquiry running in parallel into the State Government’s integrity.

Truthful Jones says

And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t” That his grandson comes home from school with a writing assignment. He asks Truthful for help. “Grandad, can you tell me the difference between potential and reality?” Truthful looks up, thoughtfully, and then says, “I’ll demonstrate. Go ask your Grand mother if she would sleep with Robert Redford for a million pounds. Then go ask your sister if she would sleep with Brad Pitt for a million pounds. Then come back and tell me what you’ve learned.” Truthful’s Grandson is puzzled, but decides to ask his mother. “Grandma, if someone gave you a million pounds, would you sleep with Robert Redford?” “Don’t tell your Grandfather, but yes, I would,” she replies. He then goes to his sister’s room. “Sis, if someone gave you a million pounds, would you sleep with Brad Pitt?” She replies, “Omigod! Definitely!” Truthful’s Grandson goes back to truthful. “Grandad, I think I’ve figured it out. Potentially, we are sitting on two million quid, but in reality, we are living with two ladies of the night.”

It has been revealed that the CCC, whose brief is to investigate government corruption complaints does not do Truthfuls’ Morale: “When the situation is so in over 95% of the cases, but hands the complaint back to right you never know what you have got.” the Department, more often than not the same Department that the complaint is made about. Maleny Neighbourhood There must be a Royal Commission-style inquiry into the way government is conducted in Queensland. However this is not the issue, the real issue is the length that people have gone to cover this up. The Premier says Queenslanders shouldn’t be concerned because this report has been buried since 2017. Integrity doesn’t have a use by date. If Premier has nothing to hide, she has nothing to fear.

Some Early History to the Maleny area.

“Early Settlers to Maleny” Even the early settlers thought the area was a paradise! Europeans arrived in Maleny in the early 1840s. An escaped convict, James Doris, claims to be the rst arrival in this area. He was quickly followed by the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt in 1843. As settlers came in to claim land at Bald Knob, Conondale, Baroon Pocket and Maleny so too was the Range opened up as a thoroughfare between Brisbane and the gold elds of Gympie further north. Early settlement of the Maleny and surrounding areas started about 1879 when land selection started and over the following twenty odd years families selected land in the area. Selectors were required to meet certain government conditions to be able to retain use of that land. Timber was clear felled and crops such as corn, potatoes and cattle feed were planted. Selectors were required to live continuously on their land and to complete certain improvements to the land. Improvements Photo Below - Timber fellers come to the area drawn by the large trees.

german feeling thus the Teutoberg area’s name was changed to Witta.

So that cropping could be better managed timber was clear felled and the stumps were removed so that ploughing for crops could be planted. As quickly as the timber was cleared weeds were quick to grow, so fertile was the area. Corn ourished as did the other crops.

In 1887 a group of German nationals led by Carl Nothling settled land at Teutoberg. This area now forms part of the Witta Curramore area. As part of this community Nothling established the rst Post Of ce in the area. It was during the period around WW1 there was a lot of anti-

The Nothling family established vineyards, ran dairy cattle and grew other crops such as corn, potatoes, oats and bananas. Cheeses also became important products produced by the settlers. In 1910 the Manitzky Family won rst prize at the Melbourne Show with their cheese entry. That was a great prize for Maleny dairy farmers.

Whilst some people believe that the name of Witta was also named after a region in Germany, but it more widely recognised that the name came from the Aboriginal Gubi-Gubi group’s language, Wetya which meant “dingo”.

Cattle were introduced to the Maleny plateau by the Dunlop family who has established their lease in the Bald Knob area. Selectors did not have the facilities that we have today. It was a three day journey for them to go shopping for basic needs to the nearest store which was at Mellum Creek.

Who Can Witness a Power of Attorney Document? With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Male

Appointing a Power of Attorney (POA) is a big decision, as the person you nominate will be managing your nancial affairs and as with many legal documents, you will need someone to witness the POA document.

Getting your POA document signed correctly is vital to ensuring it’s valid and one important step in that process is ensuring that a valid witness is present. A witness is required to verify the identity of the individuals signing a POA to con rm they are in fact who they say they are. A witness must also make sure that the individuals signing the POA have capacity and understand the document they are signing. What is a Power of Attorney? A power of attorney (POA) is an important legally binding document which allows an individual (called the principal) to give another individual authority over their nancial decisions. Your POA cannot make decisions involving your health or personal affairs. POAs are normally appointed when someone goes overseas, or decides it is best for someone else to manage their affairs. However, a POA doesn’t

need to be a lawyer, it can be any individual you trust.

There are two types of POA, a general power of attorney and an enduring power of attorney. General POA The general POA stops operating if you lose the mental capacity to make nancial decisions. You can also appoint a general POA for a speci c period of time. For example, you may want to appoint a general POA for 6 months while you travel overseas. Enduring POA

to understand the POA they are entering into, it is advisable for the witness to make a written record of that evidence. Who cannot witness a POA in Queensland? A witness cannot be: the principal; or the attorney; or not a relation of the principal or attorney; or not a paid carer or health provider of the principal. If you are considering a POA, please seek legal advice before taking action.

The enduring POA however will continue to operate even if you lose mental capacity, due to for example dementia, stroke or various other brain injuries.

Take care everyone! Easton Lawyers

Easton Lawyer turns 15 years!!! Wow, when “they” say time goes so fast, “they” aren’t kidding. This week our lovely, local legal firm EASTON LAWYERS turns 15! Just incredible how quickly this has come around. We are all incredibly proud to reach this milestone. The last couple of years have been challenging to say the least (as it has for many other businesses) but our team have handled it so well working remotely and also remaining open throughout it all, not shutting our doors once. Our rst priory was, and is, to support our clients and our community both in good times and in bad. We are so proud of our team: our Principal Tove Easton whose history with the rm starts in 2000 as an “embryonic” lawyer to the then principal Mr Alistair Charlton, our Associate Lawyer Michelle Kleinig who joined us in 2019 and is an exceptionally experienced practitioner, our Practice Manager, Sharon Scho eld who has just celebrated her 32nd year in the job - yes that’s right, 32nd year in this very of ce (!), our experienced Conveyancing Manager, Jenny Buzaki who has clocked over 17 plus years, our experienced Paralegal/Conveyancing Valli Benoit who this year has been with us for 7 years, the newest member of our team Simone Svenson who has been with us for two years and is a perfect and valued “ t” in our team and last but certainly not least our wonderful bookkeeper Shirley Grundon who has been with us forever! We are all locals and all part of the community in one way or another. And there is more: in 2023 we are looking forward to celebrating 40 years since Mr John Sheldon started the very rst legal rm in this very building and to whom we are the proud successor in business. We are always here for you our valued wonderful clients – our doors always open and the lights are on!

Cyber Crime is on the rise With the increasing use of the internet, both for personal and business use it would come as no surprise to nd that cyber crime is on the rise and many people are falling victim to internet scams, especially via social media. Cyber security specialists have now become a crucial investment for larger businesses and organisations. Skilled IT workers are only going to become more vital as technology develops and cyber criminals get more creative in their approaches. TAFE Queensland now has a course to prepare skilled cyber security workers. The course, Certi cate IV in Cyber Security is currently subsidised for eligible Queenslanders under JobTrainer funding. This course is designed to set skilled workers on the path to a successful career in information and communication technology (ICT). It is estimated that the need for IT specialists will increase by nearly 20 per cent between 2020 and 2025, TAFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba campus is among the centres to deliver cyber security training. For more information about ICT courses available on the Sunshine Coast, visit TAFE Queensland or call 1300 308 233.

NBN Internet not all that was promised

Local action group Maleny Forum still is working to get a better internet service for the Maleny rural areas. Even though the NBN rollout in the Maleny township has been of cially completed the service is still not what was promised.

Many rural areas still cannot receive fast internet, even the digital service is suffering from mobile phone black-spots meaning that no internet service is available to many local families, even though Maleny and surrounds is just one hours drive from Brisbane. Many people have been forced to turn to Starlink internet which uses advanced satellites in a low orbit which is very expensive to the end user.. Shop Locally & Shop with a Friend 16

Maleny Wood 2022 Expo Cancelled It is with much disappointment to announce that Barung Land Care has decided to defer the recommencement of the annual Maleny Wood Expo until 2023.

We and our exhibitors have been actively planning this year’s Expo since September 2021. Things had looked very promising up to December and we genuinely looked forward to a bumper event to reignite community enthusiasm, and a wonderful Expo experience. However, the rapid emergence of the omicron variant of COVID 19 across Queensland and the

country, has forced us to seriously rethink our plans.

can deliver on these three crucial factors.

The factors that are crucial to us are the health and wellbeing of the local community, the support and ability of our exhibitors and visitors to participate, and our capacity to keep faith with our visitors by providing an outstanding event.

We remain optimistic though (it’s all we can do through these times), and believe that by now putting our efforts into working with exhibitors and our partners to bring a reinvigorated and outstanding Expo to the Sunshine Coast in 2023 will put us in a good place for next year.

We have reached the point where with only 8 weeks to go, a decision had to be made about whether it was safe and viable for the Maleny Wood Expo to go ahead, and unfortunately we are not con dent at this point that we
