How you can help reduce those annoying mozzies breeding Recent rainfall, combined with warmer temperatures and increased humidity, have provided the perfect mosquito breeding conditions. Sunshine Coast Council managed mosquitoes through an extensive surveillance and treatment program across the region, residents could play a vital role in reducing mosquito numbers by minimising breeding areas around their homes.

Ecological Park - Maleny Flooding across the Sunshine Coast has resulted in signi cant damage to roads and public assets right across the region and recovery and recti cation works are now underway. Much of the Sunshine Coast hinterland has not been exempt. The extent of damage, road and infrastructure repairs would take weeks and, in some cases, months to assess, prioritise and complete.

Mosquitos have recently led to an outbreak of Japanese encephalitis which is a rare but potentially serious infection of the brain caused by a virus that can be spread to humans by mosquitoes.

To report a pothole on a council road, you can lodge an eRequest online or contact council’s Customer Contact Centre on 5475 7272.

The virus has been recently detected in pigs in Victoria and NSW. Flooding in Australia's north had triggered the migration of birds further south which were part of the "cycle of Japanese encephalitis”.

To report a pothole on state-controlled roads, please contact the Department of Transport and Main Roads on 13 19 40.

Authorities say JEV cannot be spread from person to person. It is a mosquito-borne disease and although people can catch it from mosquitoes, the insects can only pick the virus up from animals and birds. Not from an infected person. Whilst there is a vaccine for JEV, it has mainly been used by Australians travelling overseas, however this will have to change in the future as Australia needed to be prepared for more outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases in the future. Tips to protect from mosquitoes Use a recommended personal mosquito repellent. • Always read the label and follow safety directions Wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers. Light • colours are best Limit time outside at dusk and dawn • Remove water sources around the house. Tip out • containers, pot plants or items holding water. Change water in pet bowls and bird baths frequentlySmall amounts of water can breed large numbers of mosquitoes!.

Some council services continue to be impacted and some facilities are closed. Please visit council’s website for more information. https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/

Community Partnership Funding Council’s Community Partnership Funding Program has established 138 three-year partnerships with Sunshine Coast community organisations, investing more than $990,000 into these groups for this nancial year. “Organoil Pure Tung Oil” https://prep-productions.com/product-item/puretung-oil/#toggle-id-7-closed

Pure Tung Oil is obtained from the seeds of the tropical Tung Tree. As a timber nish, it is widely used as a drier in varnishes and paints. The nish is suitable for interior or protected exterior use than fully exposed exteriors, due to its lack of UV Resistance.

Organoil Pure Tung Oil Organoil tung oil is 100% Pure Natural Tung Oil and is obtained by pressing the seeds from the nut of the tung tree. It is suitable for timber, concrete, terracotta, stone & mud brick. Once dry Tung Oil is both FOOD and CHILD-SAFE. It is designed for Internal use only, but can be used on woodworking, furniture, joinery and other non-traf c feature timbers such as wall/ceiling panelling and exposed beams. Organoil has a matt sheen nish and can be applied by either brush or roller. Expected coverage is about 12 sq mt per lt. Two thin coats should be applied. If a coat too thick is applied then it may remain “tacky” because oil dries from inside out to the external surface, so a thick coat prevents drying. It can be purchased in 1lt or 4lt volumes. The physical description & colour of pure Tung Oil is a pale amber coloured liquid and has no odour and no signi cant health risk factors have been found for this product. Tung oil is a 100% natural product. UV resistant, can be used on both soft and hard woods and is environmentally friendly.

Do you know why is it called butcher? It was originally an occupational surname used to identify a person who worked as a butcher. Toiletry Packs

Delivered to Lismore Maleny State Emergency Service volunteer and principal of J’s Sports Aid Maleny, Jared Ashcroft and his partner, Chris in conjunction with the Hinterland BMX Club put together basic toiletry packs last week from items generously donated by businesses and individuals. They then took a drive last weekend to Lismore to deliver the toiletry packs to the ood distribution centre in Lismore so that they could be distributed to ood displaced families who were evacuated from their homes with nothing more than the clothes on their backs as the worse oods in nearly 70 years devoured many homes that had never been ooded in recorded memory. The northern NSW town has not recorded a bigger ood since records began in 1887. Houses, business and schools have been left utterly devastated Jared said, "It’s going to be a long and slow process to get the families of Lismore back on their feet. No words can adequately begin to describe the vast scale of destruction this ood has caused in Lismore”.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions The Federal Government is talking of drastically increasing the numbers involved in the defence of Australia. The estimates are that nearly $40 billion expansion will mean an increase of more than 18,000 people to the defence force by 2040. This increase means that Australia will be bringing the total number of permanent ADF personnel to 80,000 by 2040. To be able to get to those numbers there are going to have to be a difference in the way that recruiting is carried out. With the amount of work being carried out within the Australian community in the form of disaster recovery then perhaps there is a place for a speci c community disaster support section within the military who would be basically trained in military service then go to further training in disaster as a civil defence battalion relief with a continuing program for military training where those speci c personnel have a dual role in time of military need. These personnel may have different roles during times of military engagement, as an example because they are not as highly trained in military operations they would act in support roles during military engagement thus releasing more seriously trained personnel to carry out military operations. The training for the troops speci cally trained in civil defence would give those people skills that would be available to them should they leave the military environment.

Truthful Jones says

And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t” That his son lives at Montville and late one night a couple of weeks ago a burglar broke into his house and while he was sneaking around he heard a voice say, "Jesús is watching you.” The burglar looked around and saw nothing. He kept on creeping and again heard, "Jesús is watching you.” In a dark corner, he saw a cage with a parrot inside. The burglar asked the parrot, "Was it you who said Jesús is watching me”. The parrot replied, "Yes." Relieved, the burglar asked, "What is your name?" The parrot said, “Clarence." The burglar said, "That's a stupid name for a parrot. What idiot named you Clarence?" The parrot answered, "The same idiot that named the rottweiler Jesús.' Morale ”Never judge a book by its cover there are many a good stories between the covers”.

Perhaps consideration could also be given to have those younger people who are not continuing with further training such as University studies or an Apprenticeship could be conscripted for a set period instead of simply going “On the Dole” . This would give that body of people a sense of responsibility and personal achievement. This body would need to undergo basic military training, but training for this speci c body of “conscripts” would be more directed towards Community Disaster Support. Whilst it might be claimed that the training of this extra body or people, most speci cally the conscripted people would be expensive, surely it is more expensive to have very highly trained military personnel performing Civil Disaster Support services is, not only more expensive, but takes those highly trained people away from their primary functions. Surely, there is a position whereby people who would normally leave school and remain unemployed can be given extra long termed skills.

Some Early History to the Maleny area.

“Bernard King from Maleny” One of the original Food Program hosts on TV!!! Bernard James King who was born 25th March 1934 and lived in Kings Lane, Maleny and died on the 20th December 2002; was an Australian stage actor, celebrity chef, and television personality. Many Maleny original locals well remember the King Family from Kings Lane, Maleny. Others of a certain age will well remember the original food programs on television. One of the rst food shows was “Kings Kitchen” which was hosted by Bernard King. Bernard James King, born 25th March 1934 was a member of the King’s Lane, Maleny family.

an invitation to demonstrate his cooking prowess on that program. That spot was a hit and it soon became a regular part of the program. That then expanded into a separate 30minute program, King's Kitchen. Honey ham and lamb chops were among his signature dishes.

iBernard King was born into a farming family and attended Christian Brothers College in Nudgee, Queensland on a scholarship. After graduation he taught school!

He subsequently met Maureen Kissell, host of ABC's program “A Woman's World”. She invited him to present a cooking demonstration on her show in Sydney, and that was the beginning. At a party that he held at his home, attended by Channel 10’s Good Morning Australia hostess Del Cartwright. This resulted in

King was banned from live cooking demonstrations at shows in Mackay and Brisbane in 1998 because of one of his :off the cuff jokes”; “”locals are so slow that thongs don't even slap when they are walking”. King was always a very abrupt person and did not mind insulting a person’s feelings, especially after he had had "a few Stolis".

The above portrait was taken by Photographer Jon Waddy at Sydney's State Theatre during a shoot for the cover of A Man of Style, an album of show tunes recorded by King in 1979.

King then went on further on daytime television on shows such as the TV talent show; Pot of Gold, then Pot Luck, and New Faces. He became well known for his caustic judges reviews and in many cases became the “bad boy” of television, the one many people loved to hate as he did not fear giving a contestant a “0” score or even a “- score”.

What is Probate and when is it needed? With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

Being appointed as Executor of someone’s Will means that you are the person with the primary legal responsibility for the carrying out of the deceased’s wishes as noted in that person’s Will. This ‘administration’ of the deceased’s estate involves winding up the deceased’s affairs and distributing the assets to the entitled bene ciaries. A source of great confusion to a lot of executors is the topic of

Probate, what it means and when and why it is needed. Probate means that the authenticity of the deceased person's Will has been proven and con rms the Executor’s authority to administer the estate in accordance with the provisions of the Will. The process of obtaining Probate allows others to object to the Will, and if there are any objections, to determine if the Will is valid, because it is always possible that: (1) there was a later Will (which, if valid, would replace the older Will), or (2) the Will was made at a time the deceased was not mentally competent to make a Will, or (3) the Will was the result of fraud, mistake or "undue in uence" or

Web Address:

(4) the Will was not properly "executed", or (5) the so-called Will is actually a forgery, or (6) for some other reason the Will is not fully valid. Obtaining a Grant of Probate means that the court has recognised that the Executor has the right to administer the deceased’s estate and also that the Executor has title to the assets of the deceased in his or her capacity as the legal representative of the estate. Take care everyone! Easton Lawyers 07 5494 3511 Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 17:00 AEST. Trove Easton Easton Lawyers

Maleny Wood 2022 Expo Cancelled Unfortunately, because of the threats brought on by the COVID pandemic - Omicron, The Maleny Wood Expo has once again been postponed. This decision by Barring Landcare was made with regard to the health aspects as might effect those attending the Expo.

Since the rst Maleny Wood Expo in 1996 this Expo has become one of the largest and most notable Wood Expos in Australia. Barung Landcare uses the Maleny Wood Expo to tell the whole timber story and the Expo is designed to promote sustainable use of native timber.

It is also designed to see the skills of the early timber-cutters and see the best in both hand-crafted traditional and high tech tools as were used in traditional woodworking. Even though 2021 and 2022 Expos have been cancelled - third time lucky - see you in 2023.

If you have to choose between planting in a part of the garden that receives morning sun or one that gets afternoon sun, always choose morning sun. Morning sun gives your garden cool morning light that wakes plants up and gets them growing, while afternoon sun gives off a baking heat that can fry and stress your plants. Now is the time to get into the veggie garden!!!

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top” “How much will this helmet raise?”

O

ne of a couple of things that has been the cause for my extended stay in Darwin has been giving Slim a much needed birthday after his trip so far, Berry Springs Mechanical have been working tirelessly to get Slim back on the road soon. One of the most exciting things that has been done after several weeks of waiting on parts from down south is reconditioned injectors. That will not only help with better fuel economy but also a bit more power. I decided to Auction off my old Helmet with all proceeds going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. This helmet has been with me since before I left home almost a year ago. It’s taken me on all sorts of adventures from being scared senseless driving down the highway from Ilfracombe to Longreach, late night rides after doing donation tin runs and many more adventures involving my antics. I will let you know further down the track just how much it raised.

A bet is a bet! My thanks go to Bathurst Supercar winner, Chaz Mostert who thanks to his Bathurst win, caused Optus to kindly donated $20,000 to one of my charities Dolly's Dream, as long as Chaz Mostert dyed his hair teal for the season opener! Mostert said, “No one can say I don’t deliver on a bet - Going blue for Bathurst.” Now, that’s a fast look to go with the the new Mobil 1 - Optus paint job on the car. Thanks Chaz - “You’re a champ!”

Who

Remembers

this?

Who knows the location of this stone house? Recently this photo was found of a stone house as seen from Blackall Range, Maleny. As this photo is not known to me it set me looking for any reference to it. I have not been able to locate any information about this stone house. Also from the photograph the notice board is very hard to read. Somebody must know the location of such an iconic looking building. From its appearance it would have had to be one of the original homes in the area. Also it appears to be very unique in construction setting itself aside from other early settlement homes. To know a little about the life of those who lived there in the past would shine some light into the lives of our early settlers. Surely, somebody holds the answers to this mystery!!!
