How something so far away effects us locally Another anniversary of the catastrophe that was the 9/11 attacks on New York’s World Trade Center has just past again this last week and once again we all should have paused to consider the profound effects that this incident had on all of our lives. Whilst it might have happened nearly 20 years ago and in another country it changed the way in which we go about our daily lives forever as a consequence. Yes, it even effects the lives of all of us living here in Maleny, irrespective of what we as individuals might think about the causes of the incident. It was an incident of such signi cance that almost all of us can remember exactly where we
were and what we were doing when we rst heard that dreadful news - so many innocent people killed as a result of a deliberate act. The subsequent actions taken by the United States of America and its allies, including Australia in consequence changed the course of world history in ways that we are still evaluating twenty years later. Yes, it did effect Maleny and s u r ro u n d s a s a n u m b e r o f members of our community who were in the defence forces had to go to Afghanistan and Iraq to ght “for our rights”. It also changed the way that we went about day to day tasks such as travelling, especially on aircraft, visiting certain buildings where security was increased and put the Australian population at some further risk as a result of internal terrorist actions. It also placed a deal of pressure on the global nancial scene which effected the individuals nancial plans through such
things as a less stable economy. So you cannot say it did not effect us all to some degree. We should all take heed of how these incidents can directly and indirectly lead to the changing of the lives of everyone on the surface of the earth to some degree. Why are we talking about it here you may ask? It is important to remember what incidents have changed our history and how they changed it. We also need to remember those innocent people from all around the world who died, either directly on that day or during the ensuing years as a consequence of the incidents that occurred on that day and do whatever is necessary to reduce the chances of similar incidents happening again. The world today is a very different world to that of twenty- ve years ago and that rather innocent world will never return and much of that innocence was taken away by incidents such as those that happened on September 11th, 2001.

Pet Registrations are now Due Pet registration renewals are on the way - renewal is due by September 30. Pet registration helps Sunshine Coast Council to reunite lost pets with their owners and it also helps to plan for services such as off-leash areas for dogs, education programs to promote responsible pet ownership and the animal pound.
Signi cant registration fee discounts apply for dog and cat owners who have had their pets de-sexed and micro-chipped with the cost being just $14 or free for pensioners. There is also the option of a lifetime registration for desexed and micro-chipped cats – only $83 with no annual renewal fee required.
New residents to the Sunshine Coast can transfer their cat or dog registration for free, so if you’ve recently moved to the area now is the time to contact us and register your pet.

Captain Lindsay Gillies Lindsay Gillis is a Master Mariner, former Captain of the Australian Lighthouse Vessel, “Cape Grafton” and resident of Maleny is a well-known resident of Maleny and is a member of the Tesch family, one of the pioneering families of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Lindsay has had an interesting life on both land and water. He was involved in the early timber industry through the Tesch Family and later as a Master Mariner, nishing as the Captain of the Australian Lighthouse Vessel, “Cape Grafton”. Lindsay tells us a little about his life as Captain of the “Cape Grafton”. Australia is the biggest island in the world. The southern half of the continent is ringed by rocky reefs whilst the northern part by coral reefs. In the early days these reefs brought tragedy to many sailors and their cargoes. This has meant that the Australian Government has had to develop a maritime safety program covering a large part of the world’s oceans.

The ship was diesel electric driven by three ‘Caterpillar’ diesel motors driving a single propeller. It had a draft of 5.2 metres and carried about 500 cubic metres of fuel and was capable of driving through ice 1.5 metres thick.
During the time at sea the crew had to be fully self-contained and totally independent of shore facilities. The crew was trained in the use of welders, lathes, millers, oxy-acetylene equipment

The “Cape Grafton” replaced the previous lighthouse tender, “Cape Moreton” in 1994. Lindsay was also a Captain on that ship. As a result of this experience he was required by the Australian Government to oversee the obtaining and t out of the "Cape Grafton”.

As an aside, Vigo is the largest city of the Galicia region and Pontevedra province in northwestern Spain. The population of the city of Vigo is estimated at about 300,000 and is ranked as the 14th-largest urban area of Spain. It is the rst industrial area in Galicia. There are automobile industry, shipyards and auxiliary industry. Vigo is also the largest shing port in Europe, and the homeport of the world's largest shing company, Pescanova.
The ship was located in Virgo, Spain. The hull was being built for a client who had gone bankrupt and had yet to be tted out when Lindsay found it. He was responsible for negotiations to purchase the hull, the purchase, the t out and nal delivery to Australia. He then continued on as Master. Lindsay believed that in Vigo, Spain there would be clean sandy beaches with wooden boats bobbing in the wavelets; instead he found a polluted industrial waterfront. He was housed in a concrete bunker type of units that ran for about six kilometres. The quiet countryside did not exist
Now Back to Lindsay and the “Cape Grafton”.
Communicating with the ship builders consisted of drawings on a white board or the ship’s hull. The working day started at six in the morning and nished at ten at night with a two-hour siesta in the middle of the day.
Special facilities had to be included for the onboard helicopter and amphibious landing craft and other specialist equipment.
When you mention “life at sea” immediately a life of adventure, romance and exotic destinations spring to mind, but more about that at another time.

Whilst in Spain the Spaniards showed a very warm disposition towards him but Lindsay had trouble, as generally there was no English spoken either in the shipyard or the surrounding area. Lindsay had to learn enough Spanish to get him through.
Fitting out a ship of this type is a complicated as tting out a small town. Starting with tting out electricity to drive the ship, to telephone systems, public address systems, cafeteria, galley, cabins, showers, toilets with sewerage system, cold room and engineering workshop. All the systems had to have a “backup” system in case of failure.

Recipes from Jeremi Coconut Curries Sausage
This is a locally owned and operated butcher shop offering a delicious range of quality meat products prepared fresh in store.
When only the best will do! Ingredients 6 beef sausage 6 potatoes choppe 2 celery stalks dice 2 carrots choppe 1 onion choppe 400 g canned diced tomatoe 1 tbs crushed garli 2 tbs curry powde 2 cups Chicken Style Liquid Stoc 375 ml Carnation coconut mil 2 cups rice *to taste *to serv 1 pinch salt and pepper *to taste
Step 1 Brown sausages in a pan, cutting in half in the pan, so they cook through. When sausages are almost cooked, add onions and celery, and cook until just soft. 1.
Add carrots, potatoes, garlic and salt and pepper.
2.
Add curry powder and stir until fragrant.
3.
Add stock and tomatoes and mix well. Allow to simmer.
4.
Place mixture in an ovenproof dish and bake at 180C for approximately 10 minutes.
5.
Add 1/2 the coconut milk and stir through. Cook for a further 5 minutes. Leave in a hot oven whilst making the rice.
6.
Place rice in a pot with the remaining coconut milk, cover with water and cook until rice is soft.
Use 1/2 of the 375ml can of coconut milk for the sausages, and add the remaining half to the rice.

RSQ have a team of highly skilled experienced small business nancial counsellors employed to help small business owners during this dif cult time. These people bring a wealth of professional and small business skills to the roles and are able to provide practical and positive assistance to business owners as they navigate this very dif cult period.
Through this additional funding small business counsellors will assist small businesses impacted by drought and manage the impact of the COVID 19 Virus.
The Service offers a full range of free nancial counselling services, all aimed at providing small business owners with the assistance they need to survive the current dif culties and emerge better placed to face the future.

It is twelve months since the beginning of last year’s summer re emergencies. This summer season is almost upon us a the bush re season already is looking to be another serious re season The rural and urban arms of Queensland Rural Fire Service is already planning to respond to this year’s bush re season with the contracting of four waterbombing helicopters. Three of the eet’s aircraft will be based at the QFRS Archer eld hangar in Brisbane, while the fourth can be called upon year-round to provide additional re ghting and rescue capability. Brisbane is just their main base. QFRS aerial assets can be deployed any where within the state to forward operating bases. Depending on bush re risk and re alert levels. Due to their speed and ability do respond directly they are very fast to respond to res even in outer rural areas.
The Maleny State Emergency Service is one of the Groups forming part of the Sunshine Coast State Emergency Service Unit which is part of the Sunshine Coast Council Disaster Group. The members are all volunteers and are on call 365 days a year - 24 hours a day. State Emergency Service Groups are designed to empower people to help themselves and others in their communities in times of emergency and disaster. The basic concept is one of self-help and mutual assistance. On September 7th group members were driving down Maple Street, Maleny. They stopped at the crossing outside IGA to wait for the people to cross. The last thing to cross, on the pedestrian crossing, was a scrub turkey walking across to the other side of the road. Wonder if it was going to the butcher or baker?? Glad to see that the Maleny wild life know their road rules. Even though the recent rain was very gentle a number of callouts were received to attend to some leaking roofs. This might be a good time to have your roof checked and the gutters and downpipes cleaned to ensure that any rainfall can get away instead of nding a way into your house.
The local Maleny Fire Volunteer Group is looking for new members. If this is something you think that you can assist our community with then contact them on 0427 071 591.
With the busy disaster season fast approaching, the Maleny SES group is now recruiting. Training is provided as are uniforms and necessary equipment. Whilst this subject might be a bit further from home it certainly does effect us all. The COVID virus has added just one more problem to those we already face in2020 and I am sure that we will all be happy when 2020 passes us by and a new year comes with, I hope, a better future.
The Australian Naval Cadet Unit is a youth organisation for people aged 13-17 years of age. Maleny has its own Unit - T.S. Centaur. The Unit is headquartered in the Maleny Show-grounds in their own Unit Headquarters————-.
One thing that the COVID virus has bought us is the worst in some people. Irrespective of your thoughts about the COVID lockdown and the situations it has caused for many people there is no excuse for the thuggish behaviour of some people who have threatened the life of Queensland’s Chief Health Of cer.
Our Unit, TS CENTAUR, commemorates the Australian Hospital Ship CENTAUR (AHS 47) which was sunk off Moreton Island in 1943 by a torpedo red from a Japanese submarine, resulting in the loss of 268 lives.
Whatever decisions she makes will have consequences for us all and some of those decisions will have worse consequences for some of us. We might not agree with the decisions made, but be that as it might be, it does not give any of us the right to threaten her or her family. Rightly or wrongly she is only doing her job as she sees it. To threaten a public servant with violence or death is a serious criminal offence and it should be treated that way.
Cadets learn leadership skills, effective communication, seamanship and bushcraft whilst at the same time developing con dence, self discipline and pride. Director General Navy Cadets and Reserves, Commodore Mark Hill says the Chief of Navy is committed to growing the ANC. “In some places, the ANC provides the most tangible connection between the Navy and the nation,” Commodore Hill said.
It is just so un-Australian to threaten another person as has been done in this instance. It doesn’t matter that the offenders were thinking that they were clever or just keyboard warriors hiding in the anonymity of the internet - they have still committed serious criminal offences. These particular offenders are just cowardly and have behaved in a disgraceful manner and it needs to be exposed

They are not anonymous heroes simply playing on a computer keyboard in a darkened room their actions have caused serious concerns to the family of the Chief Medical Of cer, such that her family is now under 24 hour police guard.
“If you are that person, or you know a shipmate who is that person, let them know about becoming a Naval Cadet.
The offenders in this instance must realise that their every keystroke can eventually be traced and Queensland Authorities must take action to identify and locate those responsible for these threats and prosecute the offenders.
“The ANC has shared values with the Royal Australian Navy and those individuals who live these values, make great volunteers,” Commodore Hill said.

Maleny Locals Recognised for their Work Achievements
Acknowledging and recognising people taking pride in their work is something that’s rarely done. It’s not about winning prizes, it’s purely about taking the time to show appreciation for a job well done.
On Saturday 29th August, the Rotary Club of Maleny did this at a presentation dinner at Tranquil Park and gave several nominated people a ‘Pride of Workmanship’ award plaque in recognition of going above and beyond in their everyday work. 6 people were nominated and regrettably one nominee, Melody Fanti, bakery manager at Super IGA Maleny, was unable to attend due to an IGA work function on the same evening. The Rotary club of Maleny will do a separate presentation to Melody. The other 5 nominees did attend, together with their respective nominators, the people that took the time to write some words about why they deserved to be recognised for this award.
It was smiles all around and even a couple of tears of joy when each nominee was presented with their award and the person who nominated them spoke about why they deserved to receive this recognition. It was also wonderful to see such a cross section of people from various walks of life. There were:
partners and friends along to enjoy the night with them. It was interesting to see some lingering and chatting with each other long after the of cial part of the evening nished. A big thanks to Alan Wilson, a past president in the Maleny Rotary Club, who pushed late last year to have this event held again after a gap of 8-9 years.

Maleny State School “Fundraiser”
Each year the Maleny State School P&C raises funds to support students at our school by providing additional support in the form of funds for additional teacher aides, school resources (technology, library, Chaplain resources, sports and musical equipment, garden club, poultry club and playgrounds), school camps and student welfare. This year as a result of Covid 19 restrictions the school P&C has been unable to hold the annually held events that serve as our major school fundraisers. Maleny State School is looking forward to hosting a school Colour Fun Run in Term Four Term. Students are currently collecting sponsors for this event now and are encouraged to have their parents assist them to collect sponsorship from known family and friends and on line. Some of our families that are struggling nancially are often unable to collect sponsorship and miss out on the opportunity afforded to most other students. The company that organises the Fun Run has an incentive based system that allows students to be rewarded with prizes varying in value in relation to the amount the student raises with the minimum being $10.
All About Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Clu The idea of forming a local Club on the Range for old car enthusiasts was bandied about by several locals in the mid 1980’s because they wearied of the trip to Brisbane to attend Meetings and Rallies with like minded people. The club was of cially formed in The group headed by the late Jack and Alison Warren of Western Avenue Montville, met and “tinkered” in their workshop/shed behind their home. Jack and Alison who owned an Austin 7HP tourer were well known identities of Montville and donated the agstaff and gas lamps on the Village Green. The Club has now setting up a very comprehensive club complex at the Maleny Historical Village, McCarthy’s Road, Maleny. Currently, the Club has 140 members, with 254 vehicles on the Club Register, representing 60 marques. Members proudly participate in several local community events throughout the year, Australia Day Celebrations, Anzac Day street parade and static displays at local schools and historical days at Priscilla Cottage.
At their recent P&C meeting a parent wondered whether we could make this event more inclusive for all students by asking business if they would be interested in sponsoring a child that would normally miss out on this opportunity. This may be in the form of a cash donation from as little as $10 to the school who would allocate this amount to a child. Final collection of sponsors for students is the 18 September. Violent Robbery at Landsboroug Sunshine Coast detectives are investigating a violent robbery at a home in Landsborough on Tuesday, September 8th.
The incident involved two men who attended a residence on Eumeralla Crescent at Landsborough and threatened a 77-year-old woman with a screwdriver. One of the men continued to punch and kick the woman while the other searched the house for a safe. The two men, who disguised themselves with surgical masks and scarves, were driving a black Holden Astra with distinctive mag wheels.

About the Blackall Range Where did the name “Blackall Range” come from? The Blackall Range, where Maleny is situated was named after Queensland’s second Governor, Sir Samuel Blackall. The Blackall Range dominates the hinterland area of the Sunshine Coast, west of Nambour. Maleny, Mapleton, Montville and Flaxton are the main settlements located on the range.
The rst European explorer in the area was Ludwig Leichhardt.
He sailed to what was then known as the northern port of Rockhampton; he took a steamer to Maryborough and the mail coach to Gympie; and he journeyed west to the Darling Downs. The mountain range that dominates the Sunshine Coast hinterland still bears his name, as does the town of Blackall in Central West Queensland.
Queensland, His Excellency having calmly adhered to established conventions to navigate a political crisis and a dissolution of Parliament shortly after his arrival. Timber resources in the area attracted timber-cutters in 1860s. The last logging on the range occurred in 1939. It is also one of only two areas where the bunya pine species of tree is found naturally. The other location is the Bunya Mountaing, also in Queensland.
On 14 August 1868, Queensland’s second Governor Sir Samuel Blackall arrived into Brisbane on board the Lady Young. After docking near modern day Eagle Farm, Blackall made his way down the Brisbane River on the steamship Kate and was greeted by large crowds at Queen’s Park outside the Treasury buildings. A former member of the House of Commons and Colonel in the British Army, Governor Blackall set about following the example of his predecessor, Sir George Bowen, in travelling widely throughout the State.
This life-size portrait of Governor Blackall was painted two years after his death in 1871 by Joseph Backler, a former convict who became a leading portraitist of colonial Australia. It now forms part of the Museum of Brisbane’s collection. In mid-2008 iconic status for the Blackall Range area was con rmed, making it the third such declaration in Queensland after Noosa and Port Douglas.

On our last drive over there and after a stroll around the country shops we stopped at Yowie Park for a cuppa.
Whilst we have been warned about a strange resident in the park we are yet to see the Yowie there.
Kilcoy is situated near the junction of the Brisbane and Stanley Rivers and is near the site of Somerset Dam which supplies water for Brisbane and surrounding areas.

Spring has Sprung Watch out there are snakes about
Spring has sprung, or so the sting goes. It’s now time to watch out for hungry and frisky snakes as Australia heats up, a researcher warns In winter snakes don’t move around very much, in summer they are more mobile and most likely move away quickly when they hear people approaching. Snakes don’t hibernate during cold months but become largely inactive, they can emerge and then retreat back into their winter shelter, at will, depending on the weather conditions."
If you see a snake it is best to remain calm and try to move away from the snake Snakes aren't "out to attack us at every opportunity”. In fact most snakes only
want to stay away from people.
It is important though that people should be "snake sensible" by leaving the creatures alone, monitoring pets and children, and learning rst-aid. First aid combined with access to medical attention greatly increases the chance of survival. The correct rst aid procedure works by limiting the spread of venom throughout the body. Preventing unnecessary movement of the affected area (usually a limb) reduces the spread of venom throughout the body. To reduce movement a crepe bandage and splint should be applied to the affected area. Any jewellery (eg. rings and watches) should be removed from the affected limb.
If there is any impairment of vital functions, such as problems with respiration, airway, circulation, heart function, these must be supported as a priority Do not wash the area around the bite. If you’ve got a pad or even a piece of plastic like cling wrap, put it over the bite site to either soak up or protect the venom for later testing.
Do not use tourniquets, cut, suck or scarify the wound or apply chemicals or electric shock or ice packs. Photo above shows a snake recently visiting the Maleny Men’s Shed.

Prior to Daisy’s Place This was The Rustic Cabin It was a fuel and food stop at the Caloundra intersection on the Bruce Highway about 1930.
The Rustic Cain was built in 1923 by Mr Jess Samuel D. Johnson, a Master Builder. He and his wife, Daisy Emma Johnson lived in the building and ran the tea house which was originally situated 100 meters further north of its present location. In 1942 the State Government moved the cabin to the present site at 2859 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. The Rustic Cabin was popular as a coach stop when long distant coaches plied their way up and down the coast between the 50’s and late 70’s. As air. transport became cheaper and more convenient the long distance point to point coaches became a “thing of the past”.. Mr Johnson died 21 March 1948, aged 72 years. Daisy carried on the business until her death, 27 January 1979, aged 85 years. Sue Joseph (one time Mooloolah resident and ex-employee of the Rustic Cabin) purchased the iconic Rustic Cabin, during August 2010 and began extensive renovations throughout 2010 and 2011, to restore the building, which had been badly damaged by white ants. It was renamed Daisy’s Place.
