Another round of Covid has arrived

Queensland’s Chief Health Officer John Gerrard has advised the state's COVID-19 virus has seen an increase in active cases in the past week and a doubling in the number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals.

Early November saw 3,919 active cases in Queensland and just a week later there were 6,199.

The peak of this wave is expected to occur prior to Christmas but its shape remains unknown. It is suggested that this wave could be shorter and sharper than what has been seen before, with a peak closer to the beginning of December.

Chief Health Officer John Gerrard said, “No-one should be alarmed. We have been living with this virus for a long time and Queenslanders know what to do.” He continued to say that we need to raise our level of alertness, and be prepared to take measures to protect ourselves from a higher rate of community transmission

Typical kitchen from the 1920’s. Early kitchens had very little bench space or storage. The Australian kitchen has evolved during WW! + WW11.

Queenslanders are being advised to wear face masks indoors when people can't socially distance, in healthcare facilities and around older or vulnerable people as the state enters its fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Queenslanders can expect to see waves of this intermediate waves of this type continuing for some months or even longer. This new wave is happening right around Australia and it is expected that the other states and territories will also upgrade their health advice, and if necessary, reimpose some public health measures, like face mask advice.

Midges and Mosquitoes

Mosquito numbers typically increase during wet weather or following tide triggers. In Maleny and surrounds both mosquitoes and midges are rarely a problem, however this year has been reported that they are in plague numbers.

This is our to the continuous periods of rainfall that we have received and the recent warm weather has also encouraged them.

Mosquito and midge (sandfly) bites can be painful and uncomfortable. Certain species of mosquitoes found on the coast can spread diseases to humans and animals, unlike biting midge which do not.

Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses are the most common mosquito-borne diseases found locally. This year another disease has been found, Japanese encephalitis.

Whilst there are no treatments for Japanese encephalitis, you can relieve the symptoms by getting plenty of rest, drinking plenty of fluids and taking paracetamol for pain or fever.

Under the present weather conditions just check around your yard to ensure that there are no pools of stagnant water around, that included is flower pots and other containers.

Whilst the Council has a proactive program to manage mosquitoes, you are responsible to see that there are no breeding spots on your property.

Federal Government Health funding now missing!!!

The Premier’s plan to secure 50:50 funding in last night’s federal Budget has failed. The Premier repeatedly told Queenslanders that voting for Labor would secure 50:50 health funding and help fix the Queensland Health Crisis.

“Time and time again we’ve heard the Premier say she has an excellent working relationship with the Prime Minister and that things will be different under a federal Labor Government,” he said. “Queensland has not received our fair share in health funding when Annastacia Palaszczuk promised we would.

The Premier needs to explain why she said one thing before the election but has failed to deliver.

The Premier hadn’t offered any solution other than 50:50 federal funding to heal the Queensland Health Crisis.

Queenslanders will pay the price with record ambulance ramping, blow outs in surgical waiting lists and emergency department wait times.

It is important that the Queensland Government keeps construction of the $550.8 million

Beerburrum to Nambour rail project on track. The present focus is on the section of line between Beerburrum and Beerwah Railway stations. This project. urgently needs to get through to Landsborough which is just a short 4 kms north of Beerwah. These improvements are designed to reduce congestion along the busy North Coast Line used by both freight and passenger trains.

POLITICAL COMMENT MADE BY Qld Greens M.P Michael

Commenting on the Age of Criminal Responsibility

“We are disgusted that they will continue to politicise the lives and wellbeing of small children, predominantly First Nations children.” What is his plan to reduce criminal activity by youth? Youth criminal activity has to be tackled - not hidden by raising the age of ciminal responsibility.

Maleny Paint Supplies

6/14

One of Australia’s leading paint manufacturers, Haymes Paints has provided the following list of tips to ensure that you get the best possible paint jobs. By using an ultra-premium paint you get the best possible finish.

At Maleny Paint Supplies we supply another Australian made and owned paint, made and supplied by Colourtrend Paints.

Ensure you check any existing paint to make sure it is suitable for painting by cutting an "X" in the surface with a sharp knife. Then press some tape firmly over the "X" and pull it off. If any existing paint is removed, this means the surface is not suitable for painting and will need to be removed in the form of scraping and sanding it off.

Tip 2

Thoroughly wash away any dirt, dust and mould as the presence of contaminants on the surface can cause loss of adhesion of the new paint system. The easiest way to clean the area is by pressure washing the surface. Hosing the surface with a garden hose will not produce enough pressure to ensure the surface is clean.

Tip 3

Sand any remaining chalky surfaces to remove all chalk. Ensure any chalky powder is cleaned after chalk removal.

Tip 4

Use a high quality acrylic exterior paint. Acrylic paints have high UV resistance and last longer than solvent based enamel paints.

Tip 5

Paint in the shade, as it will be easier to apply, whereas the sun causes paint to dry too quickly and makes application difficult.

Tip 6

Avoid painting in very windy conditions, as wind also dries paint quickly and can deposit dust onto the painted surface. Do not paint if rain or dew is expected within 24 hours.

Tip 7

Start on the wall areas and finish with the trims. For more information on painting trims and windows, simply watch our DIY video ‘How to Paint Exterior Trims and Windows’.

Tip 8

If you have weatherboards and want to know how to paint the outside of your house, simply watch our DIY video ‘How to Paint Exterior Weatherboards. Where to find “How to videos” https://www.haymespaint.com.au/info-centre/

Inside hot cars not for “child minding”

To inquire contact Caloundra Command at:

18 Industrial Avenue Caloundra 4551 (PO Box 3768 Caloundra DC) Ph: 07 5293 4201

Did you know there’s an SES app for assistance available to request assistance for flood & storm emergencies?

Well now you do, download the SES Assistance app from your app store to lodge a job if you can't get through via 132500.

By downloading this app prior to any emergency will allow you to be storm ready for the unexpected.

Leaving small children inside cars alone is not a child care option. Children are particularly at risk because they can lose fluid quickly, become dehydrated and suffer from heatstroke.

The latest death of a child left inside of a car in Cairns shows just how dangerous it is.

The RACQ said that tests showed there is no safe situation in which to leave children unattended in a vehicle as car interiors can reach up to 75 degrees on a typically Brisbane day of 32.5 degrees.

The RACQ spokesperson also said, “Tinted windows, a sunshade, or even the windows slightly open, fails to reduce the cabin temperature by a significant amount.

On a hot day, a car parked in direct sunlight may reach temperatures that are dangerous to a child in less than one hour.

Always do a check of the vehicle to see it is empty before remote locking – it is easy to make a mistake and accidentally lock them in.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

Nearly every person uses the social media programs; Facebook and Instagram, both in their social interaction and as business contacts. As a result the use of the communications companies such as Facebook and Instagram is unavoidable because they control internet infrastructure, online commerce, and information flows. This has given them immense market power to these digital social giants.

Facebook and Instagram primarily makes money by selling advertising space on its various social media platforms. Those platforms include websites and mobile applications that allow users the ability to connect and communicate with family and friends. They specialise in tracking you around the web, whether you use products advertised with them or not. Have you noticed just how conveniently you might check out a product that you might have an interest in on your computer then magically on Facebook you are bombarded with advertisements for that product.

Facebook, the world’s largest social media company recorded $712 million worth of advertising revenue in Australia in 2020, up from $673 million in 2019, according to financial records filed with ASIC. But after some creative accounting, that revenue was whittled down to just $38 million in taxable profits, of which just $11 million was paid in tax.

They are able to dodge most of the tax that would normally be due because most of their services – their advertising services – are being supplied from their offshore entities.

All that money it sent overseas then transferred back into its global business, helping fund further improvements to its software, which in turn is then charge to the Australian division of Facebook at an overpriced rate, specifically to reduce paying a reasonable rate of tax.

In initial thoughts you might feel that this is OK, but it means that it is money not available to Australia to provide local infrastructure and facilities such as roads, schools and hospitals, services that we all need. That means that the average Aussie has to pay more to provide those services.

If you have a complaint about Facebook - Just have try finding a contact address or phone number. Do you think that this is fair or in Australia’s best interest?

That his nephew, a young man, Fergus O'Hara, was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few things when he noticed an old lady following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him. "Pardon me," she said with misty eyes, "I'm sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. It's just that you look just like my son, who has since passed on. You two would have been about the same age." "That's a shame," replied Fergus, "is there anything I can do for you?”

"Yes," she said, "as I'm leaving, can you say 'Good bye, Mother!' It would make me feel so much better.”

"Sure," answered Fergus. As the old woman was leaving, he called out, "Good bye, Mother!”

As he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was $127.50. "How can that be?" he asked, "I only purchased a few things!”

"Your mother said that you would take care of her bill," said the clerk. Don’t worry about older women. They will always ensure that someone will come to their aid and take care of them.

Remember When?

For us older folk we can remember when we were able to have our own displays of fireworks on November 5 each year. Sky rockets soared into the night bursting into colourful stars and sparkles along with Bungers, Po-hahs, Thunders, Tom Thumbs, Ball-shooters and many more.

This night was called 'cracker' night or the more proper term was 'Guy Fawkes Night'. Cracker night was a big event in every home and neighbourhood.

Industrial hemp, is a botanical class of Cannabis sativa cultivars grown specifically for industrial or medicinal use. It can be used to make a wide range of products. Along with bamboo, hemp is among the fastest growing plants on Earth. It was also one of the first plants to be spun into usable fibre 50,000 years ago.

At the present time with all the rain about and rivers flooding it would be easy to forget that Australia is a very dry country. Two crops that one would think not to grow in the dryer parts of Australia would be rice and cotton because of the amount of water required.

Since the 1960’s in Queensland, progressive farmers in the Lockyer, Callide-Dawson and Condamine valleys were successfully developing irrigation to successfully grow cotton. New irrigation areas were also developed at St. George and Emerald.

Cotton was first produced at Cubbie Station in West Queensland from the late 1970s, but the main production continued to be grazing cattle. Large water storages were constructed on the property and water drawn from the Culgoa River and the Murray-Darling basin waterways.

time to have a change of production on Cubby Station? No one can ignore the negative effects of many years of growing cotton on soils. Cubby Station is presently owned primarily by Shandong Ruyi, a Chinese/Japanese fabric + textile company. Could production in the more arid parts of Queensland and Australia be switched to Industrial Hemp? Along with bamboo, hemp is among the fastest growing plants on earth and has a myriad of uses.

Uses of Industrial Hemp

Industrial Hemp could commercially be used to make a variety of commercial and industrial products, including: rope, + textiles, clothing, + shoes, food, paper, bioplastics, insulation, and biofuel

In 1983 this changed and the station’s primary production became cotton growing. In doing this, in an average year the stations water use grew to between 200,000 (7,100×10 cu ft) and 500,000 (18,000×106 cu ft) megalitres of water. The station is licensed to take annually 460,000 megalitres (16,000×106cuf) from the river system. Today, with growing concerns about climate change and the environment in Western Queensland changing to a dryer condition, is it

Industrial Hemp is specifically bred to have a THC level of less than 1%. It was also one of the first plants to be spun into usable fibre 50,000 years ago.

Hemp also uses significantly less water than cotton.

With global pressures and environmental pressures being put on Australia’s fossil fuel industry the use of biofuels as an alternative to petroleum products is gaining momentum and this could come from processing industrial hemp stalks.

Soil contamination is increasing at an alarming rate due to a number of human activities such as the release of industrial effluents, municipal wastes and waste sludge enriched with heavy metals and chemicals that contaminate surrounding environments and farming regions.

Once these contaminates are enriched in our soils, they will remain a potential threat to

sustainable crop production for many years.

Industrial Hemp is a plant that has a high yet fast biomass production, a high tolerance to heavy metals stress and capable of accumulating high amounts of contaminants. As a consequence industrial hemp can be grown to reduce the amount heavy metals and soil contaminants in our environment.

industrial hemp. Hemp is unmatched in its ability to sequester (absorb and trap) carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Industrial hemp has been shown to absorb more CO2 per hectare than any forest or commercial crop.

It is widely believed that the sustainable nature of industrial hemp ensures that it will have immense commercial viability in the Australian agribusiness sector due to the diversity of its end-use products for its seed and fibres.

Hemp has natural thermoregulating properties due to the hollow structure of the fibre. This allows an optimum amount of airflow, keeping you cool in the summer and allows you to warm up in winter. The core temperature of the body works with the fabric, not against it. .

Hemp makes for healthier clothing. Hypoallergenic qualities make hemp great for sensitive skin and allergies.

At this time when society is so concerned with climate change, maybe the answer can be found in

Hemp matures in as little as 100 days and can be harvested up to three times per year. It can yield 200-250% more fibre in the same amount of land, comparative to cotton. Hemp rehabilitates and enriches soil with nitrogen and oxygen, restores pH levels and combats erosion. Hemp’s deep penetrating root system also detoxifies the soil by removing harmful chemicals and pollutants in a natural process called phytoremediation.

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

Gives A Crap? - We Do!
do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

In the last two issues I have been discussing the requirements of a valid Will. I thought it would be a good opportunity to continue the train of thought with what could happen should you die without a valid will. If a person dies without a valid Will, that person is said to have died “intestate”.

Dying without a valid will or ‘intestate’ can be very detrimental to your loved ones and also very expensive. Not only have you given away your ability to decide how your estate is to be distributed and to whom but you also run the risk of the costs of administering your estate increasing drastically and your estate being distributed to unintended beneficiaries.

One example of an unintended beneficiary is an estranged spouse from whom the deceased was not formally divorced. That estranged spouse will share in the deceased’s estate under the Queensland intestacy rules despite the deceased and the estranged spouse not being in a relationship at the time of death.

DYING WITHOUT A WILL: WHAT HAPPENS?

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

The Succession Act sets out the rules to be applied in situations of intestacy. Here are some examples:

• If you are married/de facto with no children, your spouse takes 100%;

• If you are married/de facto with one child your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided equally between the spouse and the child

• If you are married/de facto with two or more children your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided 1/3 for the spouse and 2/3 equally between the children.

In situations where you do not have any close relatives the rules provide that your estate must go to relatives that are further removed from you.

Another problem with dying intestate is the need for court

For the team at Easton Lawyers it is a privilege to help people through tough and stressful times and if the client cannot come to them this is no obstacle as home visits and/or hospital visits are a service they provide.

approval for the appointment of someone to administer your estate. In a will you would appoint an executor of your choice. However with an intestacy, your loved ones would have to apply to the Supreme Court for an administrator to be appointed. In the absence of a suitable person the Supreme Court may appoint the Public Trustee.

We have had a few enquiries recently from people wanting to get an idea of the costs involved in refinancing to another bank.

It’s not nearly as expensive as you might think to switch lenders.

Exit fees and penalties were made illegal back on 2011, so your bank can’t impose a fee to discourage you from leaving.

There are a few exceptions – your bank will charge a $300-500 settlement admin fee and there may be a break fee if you are leaving part way through a fixed rate term. There is also government mortgage discharge/ registration fees which come to $416 per property in Queensland.

So for most people, the switching costs will be less than $1,000 which will generally be a lot less than what you would be saving each year to move to a new lender with a better rate.

And talking of better rates, one of our lenders has this week announced one of the best offers we have seen for some time – 2 year fixed home loan rate of 4.89%.

Not only will that mean a lower interest rate for most people on a variable rate home loan, but also certainty of interest rate and repayments for the next 2 years until the end of 2024.

We would be pleased to run through this offer with you and are available to discuss your situation 7 days a week

Guide Dogs for the Blind need “Puppy Trainers”

Raising and training a puppy is an amazing experience that is incredibly rewarding for the whole family. All Guide Dogs puppies have the potential to change a life.

Raising a puppy involves caring for a future Guide Dog from eight weeks to 15 months of age. You’ll help teach your pup basic obedience, socialisation and the foundations they need for their training. We’ll be there along the way to offer all the support you need. We also cover the associated costs including food, some equipment and healthcare. Puppy Raising is a physically demanding role and will require you to actively look after the puppy including bending and lifting.

Handing your puppy back can be emotional, but it’s incredibly rewarding to know that the dog you have raised will change someone’s life.

You will even have the chance to see your Guide Dog working as it nears the end of its training and attend the very special graduation event.

Many Puppy Raisers feel so proud of what they’ve achieved and contributed to that they go on to raise more puppies or volunteer in other ways across the organisation.

the amount of excessive moisture in the air.

With the present indications are that the atmosphere will remain humid throughout the next 4 to 6 months mould and mildew will continue to grow.

Using a dehumidifier during the summer also improves the air quality inside your home and can eliminate potential allergens like mould and mildew. A dehumidifier also reduces the chance of dust mites which thrive in high humidity areas and also eliminates odours.

You’ll also be less likely to catch a cold or another illness when your home’s humidity level is below 50%. When relative humidity levels stay balanced indoors, homeowners can back off the air conditioner use.

For any child growing up in the suburbs of ‘50s, ‘60s & ‘70s, Cracker Night was right up there with your birthday, Easter and Christmas.

Once the sun went down on November 5th , the bonfire would be lit and kids would be running around letting off crackers, lighting sky rockets and having a lot of fun.

Australian states have now banned the purchase and use of private fireworks as a means of reducing the number of accidents, burns injuries and destruction of property. At the time ‘Cracker Night’ was banned in Queensland, fireworks were apparently the thirdlargest cause of eye injury in the state along with other injuries that sometimes left people with permanent serious injuries and disabilities.

During those decades it was suggested that arguably cracker night was the wildest night of the year in Australia.

It was something you saved your pocket-money for and very much looked forward to. It was a night of Skyrockets, Penny Bungers, Thunders, Tom Thumbs, Ballshooters, Throwdowns, Roman candles, Blazing Parachutes, Catherine wheels and more.

On November 5th there was always a gathering of neighbours out on front footpaths of local street creating a real sense of community, excitement, and so much fun! Some of the more mischievous kids causing havoc by blowing up letterboxes.

The Queensland Government banned 'cracker night' in 1972 and the use of fireworks was limited to public displays, conducted by competent, licensed operators.

Bonfire Night or Cracker Night was celebrated on the 5th November each year. This night was an annual English tradition going back over 400 years.

Its history begins with the events of the 5th November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives that the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. The Catholic plotters had intended to assassinate Protestant king James I and his parliament.

“Cracker Night” was always associated with a great bonfire with an effigy of Guy Fawkes perched on top. We planned for weeks, building a bonfire & saving to buy crackers. The joy of deciding which ones to spend the hard earned coins on.

Gunpowder Treason Day was exported by settlers to colonies around the world, including members of the Commonwealth of Nations such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and various Caribbean nations.

In Australia, which was founded as a British penal colony in 1788 saw at least one instance of the parading and burning of a Guy Fawkes effigy in 1805.

Oh to Remember, Remember, the Fifth of November!

Trying out a new skill!!!

Hereis a rare photo of me after going fast, a bit different to my daily drive. I had an awesome day out with the Moscow Circus family out on a Lake here in WA. I tried tubing for the first time with Macca which was a lot of fun. Then giving driving a jet ski a try, the only way I can describe it is like sitting on a quad bike but handling like a motorbike… and they go bloody fast (as you can tell by my hair.

Just another problem to solve

A few days ago I came face to face with one of Perth’s most notorious bridges… the Bayswater bridge… now for those of you unaware of this abomination it’s a 3.8m high rail bridge in Perth which regularly claims trucks (so much so that there’s a website dedicated to it), jokes were even made about the plane hitting it before I reached Perth. Anyways I’m pretty good with my height, been doing it for almost 2 years now so I’m reasonably switched on but it still took me by surprise as I didn’t know where it was. Now as most of you know I do about 35kph which puts me in a bit of a spot with GPS. As Siri thinks I’m a car and hence throws reckless gay abandon towards bridges, trees , telephone lines and any other things that anti aircraft tail friendly. My second option being a Truck GPS that wants to take me on the freeway (which I’m not allowed on being a tractor) so it can be a bit hairy at times, especially with Siri blasting through my headphones telling me to make a U turn on a 2 lane road in peak hour traffic. ,No thanks love, anyways I got to the bridge and realised I was too tall (4.3m) just by looking at the thing so was getting ready to swing left when an Asian traffic controller god bless him came sprinting out onto the middle of intersection from the construction site waving and shouting like a man possessed that I’m too high, I was Thankfully waving and giving him a thumbs up smiling whilst being berated by Siri through my headphones who couldn’t quite seem to comprehend what I was doing to avoid loosing a bit of aluminium off my roof and an awkward phone call to I don’t know who.
