The importance of having “Hope” Over the past 12 to 18 months many Australians have been having those feelings of hopelessness. During this period Australia has suffered a disastrous summer of bush res and the unprecedented upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic. This has seen serious social and economic effects for us as individuals and as Australians in general. Do you feel like you are presently living in the dark? Is it as if all the lights have gone off and you you don’t have the energy left to turn them back on? Do you keep struggling to nd a purpose in life, but you come up empty?

We tend to lose hope when we can’t see a pathway to our goals and day to day achievements and both mental and physical health deteriorate

quickly when we don’t have hope. Coronavirus restrictions have had more serious consequences for some vulnerable people. Thankfully Christmas is almost here and a new year is about to begin.

can look forward to a positive 2021 Hope and the following dream comes in many places. Take for instance the NSW woman reported in last weekends Courier Mail who was “hoping to nd a husband for Christmas”. She took her “hopes and dreams” along with brochures with her phone number to the local Bunnings Store and stood in the aisle. Whilst she did not ful l her hopes on this occasion she said thatch would give it another go in a few days.

The lockdown situation created as a result of the COVID Good Luck and remember pandemic has been lifted for the time being and life “as we “Hope springs eternal”. know it” in Maleny can now get (Continued on Page 2) back to almost normal and we

150g green beans, trimmed, sliced

And Blairs top tip for meat consumers!

680g (4 cups) steamed rice, to serve

It is now BBQ time so here are a couple of good tips Let The Meat Rest While digging in is sure to be your number one priority, let the meat rest for a few minutes before slicing to give the juice a chance to settle back into the meat. This will seal in the juice and keep the meat from drying out. You can cut the meat when you’re ready to immediately serve and eat. While you’re cooking, you should also ensure you don’t poke any holes in the meat as that can cause the juice to escape, so always turn the meat using tongs. Find The Right Temperatur Putting your food on at just the right time and temp is key to the perfect grill. Aside from steaks, all other meat is best placed when the ames have died down and the embers or coals are white-hot. After preheating, an easy way to check the temperature is to hold your hand about 10cm above the BBQ. If you can comfortably hold it there for six seconds, you’re on low heat, and if you can hold it there for four seconds, you’re on medium heat.

1 avocado, sliced, to serve Fresh coriander leaves, to serve

Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston Have you seen this serial Pest - “Let us Know if you have!” Its exotic purple owers are an attractive lure for butter ies, but the poisonous leaves of the Dutchman’s pipe invasive vine can be deadly. Dutchman's pipe is an invader of rainforests, riparian areas, roadsides, disturbed areas, bushlands and even plantation crop areas, which is why it is listed as a high priority invasive plant in the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area Biosecurity Plan 2017. The owers lure in butter ies who lay their eggs on its leaves and once they hatch the larvae feed on the poisonous vine leaves. Some butter ies like the Richmond birdwing butter y, are especially threatened. Residents and other land managers are working towards eradicating it from the Upper Stanley, Pumicestone, Mooloolah and Maroochy catchments and working to contain its spread in the Mary River Catchment area. Council is presently working with landholders to help wipe out Dutchman’s pipe and protect our native ora and fauna as it reduces habitat for our native wildlife by smothering native trees, shrubs and vines so that we continue to get visits from our wonderful birds and insects.” Service Excellence Portfolio Councillor Winston Johnston said it was great to see that council had recognised the importance of eradicating this invasive vine from our catchment areas. How to spot and remove Dutchman’s pipe:

owers that grow up to 10cm wide. •

The heart-shaped leaves look like those of the native Pearl vine, which is a food source for moth larvae, so it’s important to make sure you can spot the difference so you don't accidently take out or damage the Pearl vine.

The green seed pods open into a basket as they dry out which releases seeds that are carried by the wind into the surrounding environment and along waterways.

To remove Dutchman's pipe, pull or dig out plants making sure to remove all roots. For larger infestations, cut down the vine before it develops seeds (before summer) and dig out roots. •Make sure you remove all plant parts because it can spread vegetatively. If you have seen Dutchman's pipe, please contact council on 5475 7272 to speak with a Pest Plant Of cer. The Queensland Government Biosecurity Act 2014 requires everyone to take all reasonable and practical steps to minimise the risks associated with invasive plants under their control. This is called a general biosecurity obligation (GBO).

Bribie Island Break Through!

The weekend of the 12th and 13th December saw weather that was being generated by a coastal trough and slow moving upper low over the southeast. The dangerous surf conditions have lead to coastal erosion on many beaches in the area.

Baroon Pocket Dam is also rising rapidly and currently sits at nearly 90% full and is expected to receive more water over the next few days.

This has bought hazardous surf and the high tides to our ocean beaches right along the coast of South East Queensland. As a result there has been a break through on the northern end of Bribie Island letting ocean waves into Pumestone Passage opposite The Esplanade, Caloundra.

The weekend saw Maleny and Nambour and District State Emergency Service crews were out and about in the Maleny/ Nambour Area responding to calls for assistance.

This is not the rst time that he northern tip of Bribie has been breached. Channels in the passage are shifting continuously and boats need to give extra caution to their navigation. For more than a decade the Sunshine Coast Council has been warning that a “tidal breakthrough” at Bribie Island could have an impact on the Golden Beach area

Sunshine Coast Mayor, Mark Jamieson said that council crews would determine and prioritise coastal repair works that may be required following a full assessment as king the tides receded. It is too early to know whether the changes will affect Golden Beach. It may recover after this event, but the long-term erosion process is going to continue and it’s most likely that Bribie Island will break through between Moreton Bay and Pumicestone Passage this year and the next few years.

Meanwhile in Maleny the area has copped over 10 inches between Saturday 12th and Tuesday 15th. McCarthys Road near Maleny Dairies was cut on Monday 14th. - see photo right. Once again the Obi is swiftly owing and is rising under Maple Street traf c bridge.

In Motor Vehicle Repairs, Experience Counts - loyalty to insurers doesn’t!

What to do after an accident? Industry Advice from an Car Accident Repair Specialist

Another example why you need to shop around for the best insurance. This customer has held insurance cover for 38 years with NRMA and has 21 policies.

Being involved in an accident is a very stressful situation. Irrespective who is in the right or the wrong there are certain obligations placed on drivers.

The renewal for the Audi A4 increased from $1,145.10 to $1,224.37 - the sum insured had decreased from $50,000 down to $27,900.

Assess the situation Stop your vehicle immediately and give assistance to anyone who may have been injured during the accident. If anyone has been injured we recommend you notify the nearest police station immediately or if that is not possible through extraneous circumstances as soon as possible.

Don't rely on your insurer to look after you, they are looking after the shareholders before the policy holders. Loyalty is no longer being rewarded by insurers, you only need to shop around with a reputable insurer to nd this out. They also do not give you choice of repairer unless you pay extra!

If the vehicles are not obstructing the ow of traf c, they shouldn’t be removed until police have arrived. If they are obstructing the traf c, move the vehicles off to the side of the road after the point of impact has been agreed upon and marked on the road where possible. Con rm the time and location of the accident with all other parties. If no one is injured or if the other driver doesn’t provide you with their name and address but you have their vehicle registration number within 24 hours Exchange details with the drivers and owners of the vehicles involved or any other person whose property is damaged as a result of the accident, including name, address, vehicle registration and description.

Maleny Accident Repair Centre is a local accident repair shop, repairing all makes and models with the latest in smash repair technology

If a driver hits a parked vehicle and is unable to nd the owner of the hit car, it is not enough for the person to leave their name, address and registration number on the windscreen of the parked car and drive away. You need to report the matter to the police as soon as possible. These notes were provided by the RACQ.

Maleny RFB Volunteer group We regularly read stories about Hollywood stars and TV personalities and those stories show those people in a not good light. However here is a story that shows one of those Hollywood stars, Kylie Jenner in a good light and it should be shared. This is a GOOD NEWS STORY. Me Jenner has donated $270,000 to provide the Burketown RFB with a "heavy-attack" re truck and the truck is now is on its way to Burketown on the Gulf of Carpentaria. Tourism is increasing in the region and the truck would ensure travellers and locals alike are safe. The "heavy-attack" truck will service bush res, road crashes and other emergency rescue situations. The multi-purpose road truck will help the rural community of Burketown service people across hundreds of kilometres. Ms Jenners name will go on the truck. At the peak of thew recent bush res the devastated Australia Kylie Jenner was just one of thousands of people in the world who were deeply touched [by and subsequently donated money. From the donation a second truck is being built and will be deployed to Birdsville in outback Queensland. At the time of the donation Ms Jenner said that she was "honoured" that her donation was continuing to help the RFBAQ and it was very important to her to "donate across Australia during that time".

Maleny SES Volunteer group We can’t avoid disasters happening in Queensland but we can reduce the impact of those disasters on our loved ones, home, business and community. Queensland is the most disaster impacted state. In the past decade Queensland had been impacted by more than 80 signi cant natural disaster events, leading to a reconstruction and recovery program of over $16 billion. Experience has shown communities that are well prepared prior to a disaster are more resilient and able to recover faster. Local Councils are now in the process of helping their communities prepare for future disasters and severe weather as part of the 2020-21 Get Ready Queensland program. The rst step is to ensure that there is an up to date disaster plan for each individual area. You can check out the Sunshine Coast Council’s Disaster plan at: https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Living-andCommunity/Community-Safety/Disasters From there you can make a simple plan for yourself and your family so that you too are prepared.

The Sunlander was just one of a number of Queensland passenger trains that bore the “lander” name. All were introduced in the mid 1950‘s and represented what then was a major upgrade of passenger comfort The Sunlander was introduced in June 1953, Midlander in May 1954 and the Westlander August 1954.

The popularity of the new services meant that here were only enough carriages for four Sunlanders, offering ve services per week. Ipswich Workshops constructed new carriages in May 1961 to complete a sixth Sunlander train allowing the fully intended service between Brisbane and Cairns

As a young boy in the early 1950’s I travelled on the Sunlander a number of times from Townsville to Brisbane and Return. I also travelled on the the version before that, also called the Sunlander. Oh what a leap in technology Th e T h i ng s t ha t y o u r e m e m b e r fro m a past li fe The Great Northern Rail Station in Flinders Street, Townsville was an icon of Queensland Rail itself. As a young boy in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s I can vividly remember catching trains from there to Brisbane and then later to Mt. Isa.

the banks of Ross River and trains took a large 360 degree circle over Ross River to approach the station from the direction that had just travelled to get there. As a young boy I would often wonder what would happen if a train fell off the tracks and plunge into Ross River. I don’t know if anything ever did

Travelling by train was always a delight for me. It is the little things that you remember. Across the road from the station was a dry cleaners shop. On the roof of the shop was a large neon light of a man pressing clothes with a commercial ironing machine and the light would alternate from open to close. I would often consider just how this worked!

fall off that track.

Whilst the Townsville Rail station has been shifted from the site the Great Northern Rail building building still serves as the North Queensland HQ for Queensland Rail. Today, the building is heritage listed. But then I digress from The Sunlander.

The Townsville rail station was a three-storey, red brick structure built in 1913. It was situated on

The Sunlander went on to become a travellers “must do” trip.

THE AnSUNLANDER icon of Queensland Rail “The Sunlander was introduced as a prestige rail service servicing the Queensland east coast between Brisbane and Cairns This service became a world icon in rail services.” There was always some excitement at the beginning of each trip for a young male child.

would be cheers and a big wave as papers were thrown out the windows.

The journey always started when the guard's shrill whistle brought an answering toot from the great diesel engine. Slowly, at rst, the wheels turned, then quickly gathered speed; the Sunlander was off on its thousand-mile journey.

There was always the excitement traveling through the stations, especially late at night guessing who people were who were rushing along the platforms and where they were going in the late of night carrying their ports, blankets and pillows strapped to the outside.

One of the great thrills of this journey was the variety of landscapes that the train travelled through. There was always something different to see, and thus the 45 to 50 hour trip did not appear to be that long. Before the introduction of the “airconditioned” Sunlander the train was pulled by a steam engine. One soon learnt that it was unwise to put ones head out the window to watch the view. Eyes soon lled with ash and soot would cover everything that you touched. Along the journey there was always the delight to watch for the rail workers who were repairing the lines. They would camp on site in those days and their camp would be set up right on the side of the line. As trains passed their camp there would be a chorus of calls “paper” as they were wanting a copy of the latest newspaper to read that night in camp. There

Porters would be passing quickly along the platform pushing their steel wheeled barrows carrying all sorts of goods that would be loaded onto the train. With the coming of the Sunlander in the 1950’s many things changed. The new train was diesel powered and had air-conditioning, thus the windows were all sealed shut. No more soot covering everything. With this service was the advent of the onboard dining cars and that eventually saw the end of railway refreshment rooms as they were known in the community. Rail throughout Queensland was always the link that tied communities throughout the state together. Perhaps a return to a strong, fast and ef cient rail service throughout the state would once again bring prosperity to our regional areas.

How times changed for travellers

From Steam to Diesel

The original Sunlander consisted of a steam powered train with wooden carriages that featured varnished timber internal panelling made from natural Queensland timbers. This service rst began in 1934. With the introduction of the Sunlander in 1950’s the original train was used on the route between Rockhampton and Brisbane and was re-named The Rocky Mail.

Importance of stations en-route Rail stations along the route were of vital importance for the services. Beside being the places where passengers alighted and left rains stations were dispersal points for goods to be sent or received by rail They also provided refreshments for passengers. Passengers would rush to the refreshment rooms to obtain their food and drink needs These refreshment rooms gained recognition for their food specials. Just a couple I remember were Bowen for mangoes, Boorooren for the best pies and Mirium Vale for crab sandwiches Passing through Gympie was usually the middle of the night for the southbound journey and it was notorious for the cold in winter There was always some sense of disappointment when the train nally arrived at the platform at the Roma Street Rail Station as the journey was over Just one of those things in life that youngsters today will never get to experience. Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true. A young fella with his pants hanging half off his arse, no front teeth and a half inch thick gold chain around his neck, walked into the local unemployment of ce to pick up his bene t money. He strolled up to the counter and said: "Hi there, you know what... I really HATE claiming bene ts, I'd really much rather have a job. I don't like taking advantage of the system and getting something for nothing." The social worker behind the counter said: "Wow, your timing is excellent. We've just received a job opening from a very wealthy elderly man who wants a chauffeur and bodyguard for his beautiful daughter.

No Bulls##t”

You'll have to drive around in his brand new Mercedes-Benz CL, he'll supply all of your clothes and because of the unsocial hours, meals will be provided free of charge, you'll also be expected to escort his daughter on her overseas holiday trips, but you will also have as part of your job, to satisfy her sexual urges as the daughter is in her mid-20's and has a rather strong sexual appetite." The guy, jaw dropping and wide-eyed said: "You're bull-shittin' me !" The social worker said: "Yeah, well . . . You started it . . .“

Travelling Jackaroo getting closer to trip around Australia 17year old Sam Hughes from Maleny is planning on taking his Chamberlain 9G tractor around Australia beginning in February 2021 fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Dollys Dream as he goes. In his gap year following nishing year 12 at Maleny High School. He will be doing jackarooing jobs along the way to help support himself. A number of Maleny local businesses have supported Sam to get his chamberlain tractor ready for the trip which is estimated at being around 13500 kilometres. A number of Maleny Local businesses have already supported Sam to help prepare for his “big adventure”. This is one of the bene ts of locals shopping locally as it helps local businesses to support other local events and organisations. Sam will be towing a trailer carrying a Suzuki 4WD and any necessities that he will need along the way. Sam is also supporting other charities that he has an interest in. One is Dolly’s Dream which works to raise awareness about bullying. Dolly Everett, aged 14 years took her own life after being bulled over an extended part of her life.

More information about Dolly’s Dream can be found at the web site: https://dollysdream.org.au/ Lights on the Hill Trucking Memorial at Gatton is another charity that interests Sam. It is in recognition of the sacri ces truck drivers make to do their job. More information can be found out at the web site at: https://lightsonthehill.com.au/ Already Sam has started his “good work” as recently he came across a tree across a road following a storm. He was able to use a chain he was carrying and with trusty tractor was able to snag the tree off the roadway allowing blocked traf c to continue on their journey. We wish Sam a safe and productive trip around Australia and you can follow his journey via the Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/thetravellingjackaroo

Between 1890 and the 1930s Landsborough was an important transport centre for holiday makers at Caloundra to the east, and for farmers in the Blackall Range to the west.

The men who built the railway line used picks, shovels, cross cut saws and horse drawn ploughs, while explosives were used to blast through rock and to make tunnels.

A reinforced concrete air raid shelter at the Landsborough railway station, built in 1942 by Queensland Rail, was designed to provide shelter, in the event of a Japanese air raid, for train passengers waiting at the railway station during World War II.

The railway station was an important structure where people gathered to hear the latest news, pick up their mail, drop off their produce and waited to be transported miles away. Landsborough was a refreshment stop for
