Maleny RSL Remembers those Who Have fallen!

Whilst the Maleny Anzac Day March down Maple Street is the most heavily supported of the day’s events by Maleny Residents there are other ceremonies throughout the day.

The day begins with a traditional Dawn Service at the RSL Maleny Cenotaph, adjacent to the RSL Memorial Hall. This is followed by the traditional Gunbarrel Breakfast.

There is also a brief service at the Witta Cemetery. . At the conclusion of the service, participants are invited to move to the graves of individual veterans. Pausing for a moment of reflection proves to be a moving experience and solemn reminder of the sacrifice made by our Veterans.

At about 9.40a.m a service will be held at The Soldiers Memorial Walk at the Soldiers Memorial Hospital. Participants are invited to gather at the Gazebo behind the Hospital.

The march assembles at Cooke Park, on the corner of Fig & Maple streets by 10am. The March then sets off at 10.30 am, proceeding along Maple to the RSL Maleny Cenotaph for the Commemorative Service at 11am.

Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell M.P.

Aussies love to gamble, but do they go too far?

Let’s face it, Aussies love to gamble. From a game of two up on ANZAC Day to a flutter on Melbourne Cup or a punt on the horses or footy, to those “one-armed bandits” - the pokie machine.

For most, it’s a passing occasion, a special treat, some fun on a Friday night. For others, it becomes an addiction.

I’m pleased we return most of the taxes from gambling back to the community through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund…but that doesn’t always sit comfortably with me.

After meeting Val and Jennie from Relationships Australia Qld - who have the largest and longest

running gambling help service in the state - I feel even less comfortable.

Do you know we only provide 0.6% of the taxes we take back into gambling harm minimisation. And that a simple doubling or tripling of that to 1.2 or 1.8% in line with other Australian states - lifting the annual contribution from $10 million to $20 or $30 million - would allow services like Relationships Australia to reach more problem gamblers.

There’s a state budget coming up in June. I’ll be pushing for this much needed increase. Would value your support of the cause.

Just some local news from Fisher

Mr. Andrew Wallace Federal MP for Fisher

  ,

Sunshine Coast residents are deeply disillusioned by the inaction of both the Federal and State Labor Governments regarding critical infrastructure funding on the Southern Sunshine Coast.

SunshineCoast MP Andrew Wallace stated that while the 2019 Budget allocated $5 million for the vital Sunshine Coast Roads Improvement Study, the Albanese Government's decision to delay $2.1 million throws a spanner into its progress and demonstrates the difference in approach of the former Coalition Government which allocated more than $5.8 billion since his election in 2016. When coupled with the Queensland State Labor Government's failure to adequately address congested roads, residents and businesses are right in feeling abandoned.

"The Sunshine Coast deserves better than empty promises and political gamesmanship. State and Federal Labor have failed to secure the investment our community desperately needs. We need leadership, not finger-pointing between Brisbane and Canberra”.

The original study, a joint investment of $5.75 million aimed to create a comprehensive plan for improved access to Caloundra, Kawana, and surrounding areas.

"The inaction by both Federal and State Labor governments is particularly concerning when we consider further cuts made to other infrastructure projects across the Sunshine Coast region."

"Federal Labor’s decision to cut $7 million allocated in the 2021-22 Federal Budget for a new transport corridor connecting Nicklin Way to the CBD north of the Caloundra Road roundabout, is a major blow for Caloundra residents and commuters."

"Withholding funding and failing to deliver on previous commitments is a slap in the face to residents who face daily gridlock. We need both the Federal and State Labor Governments to get their act together.

Release the remaining funds, collaborate effectively, and deliver a long-term solution for a safer, more efficient road network for our area.”

Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises

What happens to electric car batteries in a smash?

Lithium-ion batteries pack massive amounts of energy into small batteries, and when these batteries catch on fire, they are harder to put out.

However, electric vehicle makers have created safety protocols and installed various sensors, fuses, and circuit Breakers to disconnect batteries when a collision occurs.

There is no one method to manage an EV battery fire, rather three methods used globally that have emerged as best practice; Cool, Burn, Submerge. Each of these EV fire incident management methods are valid options for fighting the fire.

Need a Roadworthy Certificate?

Maleny Service Centre have a Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises and we know only too well what it takes to make your vehicle safe and roadworthy.

All vehicles (including trucks, motorbikes and trailers) must have a Safety or Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) if being sold, registered for the first time or being re-registered in Queensland. Registered Vehicles cannot be solid without a RWC.

YSpotlight on Remote Access Scams

ou may have heard the term “Remote Access Scam” multiple times over the last few years. With so many advances in technology, this type of scam has increased across the industry, with hundreds of millions of dollars lost each year by hard-working Australians to them. But, do you really know what a RAT scam is? Let’s take a further look.

A Remote Access Tool (RAT) is a type of software or app that, once downloaded, allows other users to remotely connect to your device. Usually, someone will contact you initially by phone, SMS or email, claiming to be from a technology-based business, or sometimes even from the bank itself.

They may tell you that there is “something wrong” with your device and ask you to download an app or program (the remote access tool or RAT) to access your device and help you fix the issue.

They may ask you for your personal banking details and or personal identity details or request to view or control your internet banking session while you are making a payment for their “services” or suggest you buy their own software. This way they can attempt to, or actually capture, your information to defraud you and your accounts. Thousands of people fall victim to Remote Access Scams each year, so it's important to stay alert.

If you suspect you're talking to a scammer

• Do not give out any banking or personal information – this includes your internet banking details, card details, one time password, or identity information such as your drivers licence or passport details.

• Do not download the remote access tool (or any other app) if it is requested by the caller.

• Hang up the phone or cease corresponding via SMS or email immediately.

If you suspect you have fallen victim to a scammer

• Cease all contact with the suspected scammer immediately and do not re-engage with them, if they attempt to make additional contact with you.

• Contact your bank as soon as possible and provide us as much detail as you can, on your interactions with the suspected scammer. Keep any correspondence you have with the person/s.

• Visit an IT Specialist to have all devices cleaned, that may have been compromised with a remote access tool or possible malware.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

Can we afford to keep Ex Prime Ministers in lives of luxury?

When one looks at the proficiency and motivations of some of Ex-Prime Ministers and how they have caused social problems for the Australian community through, either incompetence or more likely following their own agenda why should we benefit them with the many expensive perks that they retain for a lifetime?

As more of us are reaching retirement age we are forced to consider just how we will continue to pay for our lifestyle. Whilst most of us have worked diligently for periods of about 50 years there is no certainty of reasonable continuing finances.

Wouldn’t it be nice to keep getting paid for a job long after you chuck it in or get fired? This is just one of the many perks afforded to all former Australian Prime Ministers. Not only will they get very large guaranteed pensions they also have a seemingly endless and expensive range of perks, none of which are available to the average Aussie. This generally means they can claim for domestic travel (as long as it’s a regular scheduled service), car costs, office facilities, office admin, telecommunications, publications and newspaper subscriptions plus family travel.

And that lasts until they die.

Sure the duties of a Prime Minister whilst in office is stressful and duties are long and tiring. They do forfeit much time with families. However, they are well paid whilst in office and they seek this prestigious office of their own free will.

Many other Aussies also work in stressful jobs and also forfeit special times with their families in their doing their jobs.

Several former prime ministers have also used their status as a former PM to land high-flying jobs after their time in public office has ended whilst continuing to receive their large pensions and use their expensive perks. Many of the perks in respect to travel also goes to spouses which includes defacto partners.

With the Australian Budget being in so far in the red perhaps now is the time for perks, except for a reasonable pension for ex Prime Ministers to be ceased.

It should be remembered that “governments” do not have money of their own - only money that has been take from the taxpayer. The less money spent at “the trough” means a bit more is left for the average Aussie taxpayer.

Truthful Jones says

And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”

Truthful Jones Tells us that he remembers one night at the Maleny Hotel when he was having a quiet snort when he noticed this bloke at the other end of the bar, just looking at his drink. He stays like that for half of an hour.

Then, this big trouble-making truck driver steps next to him, takes the drink from the old mate, and just drinks it all down. The poor man starts crying. The truck driver says, "Come on man, I was just joking. Here, I'll buy you another drink. I just can't stand to see a man cry."

"No, it's not that. This day is the worst of my life. First, I fall asleep, and I go late to my office. My boss, outrageous, fires me. When I leave the building, to my car, I found out it was stolen. The police said that they can do nothing. I get a cab to return home, and when I leave it, I remember I left my wallet and credit cards there. The cab driver just drives away."

"I go home, and when I get there, I find my wife in bed with the gardener. I leave home, and come to this bar.

And just when I was thinking about putting an end to my life, you show up and drink my poison.

Just shows - sometimes it pays not to play jokes on people you don’t know too well!

I was once at the rail station in Cork when a countryman came to the counter near me and he said to the ticket man:

“I'd like a return ticket,” he says. “Where to?” Said the ticket man

“To here!” says the Irishman

Bribie Island - WW11 …defending Australia

Whilst work on Fort Bribie actually started in 1939 it was not carried out as a priority. Fort Bribie was established as a defence for Brisbane and Moreton Bay.

Following the bombing of Pearl Harbour on December 7th 1941 by the Japanese Imperial Navy and Air Force grave concern was held for coastal Australia that similar events would happen on Australian soil work really became more urgent.

In fact a number of Australian locations were attacked by the Japanese, those included Broome, Wyndham, Darwin, Townsville and more importantly Sydney Harbour along with a number of Australian o! shore islands.

Right from the outbreak of war in 1939 a military presence was established on Bribie Island. Prior to that the main defence of Moreton Bay was directed from Fort Lytton.

Early in WW11 it was realised that the coastal areas of Australia were under defended and as a result some preliminary defence precautions were undertaken, even if not too seriously. One such installation commenced in leisure was Fort Bribie on the ocean side of Bribie Island.

During WW! the Royal Navy began experimenting with an electrical lloop system that could detect ships and submarines when they passed over cables laid on the floor of the ocean.

It was during WW11 that this system became extensively used by the British and the British Dominions as a harbour defence measure.

Maleny’s Sallaway Brothers assist with Fort Bribie construction

The Sallaway Brothers from Maleny played an integral part of the setup of Fort Bribie.

In association with Col Barnett, Jack and Reg Sallaway and Malcolm McKinnon transported the two 6” naval guns to Blacks Beach, now Golden Beach from Fort Lytton in Brisbane from where they were transported by barge to Fort Bribie.

Malcolm McKinnon drove the truck from Fort Lytton. The gun barrels were way too long for the truck, and apparently made the steering very light on the trips up from Lytton, -- and it had to be reversed onto the barge for the barrel/s to poke through the barge’s cabin. The truck had no windscreen, no roof, no mudguards and a wooden seat.

The photo above shows the old “picnic-shelter shed” in the background at Tripcony Park, adjacent to Bulcock Beach, Caloundra, where the guns and associated equipment were loaded onto the flat -bottom barge -- it may well have been the old barge called “Waterhen.”

The guns had originally come from the WW1 light cruiser, HMAS Sydney and had been

Bribie Island - WW11 …defending Australia

Continued from Previous Page

Fort Bribie duty was a hard life

Fort Bribie was manned by a number of Units, however the main body of soldiers were from the AIF Coastal Defence Unit.

Initially the conditions were fairly primitive however Japanese interest in Moreton Bay caused major renovations and upgrades to be made making this installation the main defence establishment for the defence of Brisbane.

Some Military historians believe that this establishment became so important because it was to be the point from which the Australian Government had decided to abandon the northern part of Australia to the enemy should they attack from the north. Even the beaches at Bondi had barbed wire entanglements to slow the Japanese soldiers should they land.

This plan, known as the Brisbane Line was officially denied by the government of the day but the rumour was widely believed because the US General McArthur once referred to it. It was believed that Australia could only defend the south eastern part of Australia basically in a circle from Brisbane around to Adelaide in South

Sinking of the Centaur

The Centaur, 2/3rd Australian Hospital Ship, was a motor passenger ship converted in early 1943 for use as a hospital ship. In November 1941 it had rescued survivors of the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran after it had sunk and been sunk by HMAS Sydney.

On 12 May 1943 the clearly marked and lighted Hospital Ship, Centaur sailed unescorted from Sydney at 0945 hours carrying her crew and normal staff, as well as stores and equipment of the 2/12th Field Ambulance but no patients. It was sunk without warning by a torpedo from the Japanese submarine 1-177 under the command of Lt Commander Nakagawa on the 14th May 1943 but that is a story for another time!

Fort Bribie gets a hospital!

Fort Bribie was one of the primary defences for Brisbane during World War 2.

As the threat from the Japanese began to grow the Department of Defence saw the need to establish a hospital at Fort Bribie. Soldiers remembered a 24bed underground hospital which was called a C.C.S.- Casualty Clearing Station. 24-bed underground E-shaped Hospital with two entrances”. The building dug into a sand hill with a sandbag wall hiding the entrance.

It is believed that this hospital was built underground to protect it from shelling of the enemy. The roof was constructed from ti-trees cut on site then a layer of sand placed over the top. The purpose of an underground hospital was for Emergency use only, in case of enemy invasion. Normally any sick personnel was always sent to the hospital in nearby Caloundra.

Records show the first Doctor was posted to Fort Bribie In July 1943.

It is unknown if this building was in fact ever used as a hospital. Possibly this was because of the war in New Guinea stopping the Japanese troops from actually coming further south thus the need for the hospital subsided.

It is believed that this construction was subsequently used as a storage unit until a fire that was lit to clear away undergrowth got away and destroyed it!

Military Jetty at Golden Beach

One of the iconic landmarks at Golden Beach today is the Military Jetty. It is one of the popular fishing spots for many families. It was originally built during WW11 as a mainland supply point for Fort Bribie.

The buildings that form part of the WW11 Fort Bribie Establishment have been entered into the Queensland Heritage Register and are now managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

The photo below shows the supply tender used to transport both troops and supplies across the passage to Bribie Island.

Couple renew their vows after 50 years!

Cliff and Janette Robbins of Maleny have just renewed their wedding vows after 54 years of marriage having first been married inCardiff, Waled on the 4th April, 1920.

Unfortunately, Cliff suffers from dementia and now resides inOpal Care Home at Birtinya. Dementia has caused Cliff to forget that he is already married to “the girl of his dreams” and continues to ask Janette to marry him whenever she visits.

Well-known Malenyite, Jared Ashcroft works at Opal Care on the nursing / support staff and he wondered if a wedding vow renewal ceremony might be just what was needed for Cliff and Janet. Following discussions with their family Jared and staff at Opal Care set about planning their “wedding”.

Rev Peter and Michelle Maher of the Range Church in Montville, also from Maleny assisted with the conduct of the wedding. Janette said that Cliff was “the love of her life” and she would continue to care for him for as long as is left in life for them both.

Congratulations Cliff and Janette.

What a great idea

“take a seat and a moment of silence”

The seat pictured is situated at the Beaudesert RSL Club.

What a great idea and a way of remembering every day those who served for us all

How could a seat similar to this be located somewhere in Maleny to remind us about those who served for us all?

Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

Selling or buying a property!

Here are a few things to consider during the process With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

It has hardly gone unnoticed there’s a bit of a stampede underway from the more intensely COVID affected southern states to the beautiful and considerably less affected Sunshine State.

However as physics tells us everything has an equal and opposite reaction and in this case that result has been a different kind. The outbreak of a whooper of a property boom in South-East Queensland!

Fourteen Day Finance

Pre the current frantic market, the standard Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) Contracts which document the bulk of house, townhouse, unit, apartment and rural land and building sales in Queensland had an average finance approval time frame of about fourteen days. However, due to the massive increase in demand currently being placed on real estate agents, finance brokers, banks and other financial institutions [should I include law firms and government agencies] twentyone days is the minimum and it can take longer to get finance approval.

This being the case the flood of Southerners moving north expecting a quick settlement may have unreasonable expectations about how quickly their new property will move through the settlement process, as Queensland always had a reputation for fast thirty-day

settlements as opposed to the slower Southern states.

And we did, in a normal market. But this is not a normal market cycle and Queensland notwithstanding a highly advanced electronic property titling system, can only work as fast as the people within it.

The Pest in Inspections

While I hope by now ,I’m starting to preach to the choir, while we are delighted to have you join us here in the best state in Australia, not that we don’t all love a trip to the south for skiing, shopping, eating and well, all the other great stuff you have on offer… we just prefer to live here in Queensland (I’ll spare you the slogan).

So, another hurdle you will need to climb over to come join us here in the beautiful north will be the timing of your inspections.

While we have a great many well qualified building and pest inspectors, when sales are happening at the rate they are during a property boom as we are currently experiencing, there are going to be delays.

There are a finite number of qualified inspectors and at the moment an infinite number of properties to be inspected.

So like the finance when purchasing in Queensland be mindful that you allow at least 14 days for if possible for property inspections, noting to the purchaser that it is difficult during this boom to get a booking due

to the overload of work at present.

Better to ask up front now than try to negotiate and extension under the contract and have it fall over after you have told your family and friends you’re moving to the beautiful Sunshine Coast.

Thirty Day Settlements a Myth

Once upon a time (pre COVID) in Queensland the wonderful magical land settlement on a contract only took 30 days even if subject to finance.

However, now post COVID, mid property boom, mid overloaded finance infrastructure and inspection systems the reality is closer to forty-five days for settlement.

Snail Mail

Now I mentioned above that we are pretty darn tech savvy here in the Sunshine State. So we might like to spend our days sitting under a palm tree sipping a cool one, but we do it with a laptop while designing code!

So the bulk of our conveyancing in Queensland is electronic, none of this waddling off to a registry office nonsense we just press a button and it’s done.

However, the law is still a bit ancient and try as it would to keep up with the modern world

Selling or buying a property!

Here are a few things to consider during the process

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

(and it is trying) it does from time-to-time lag behind just a bit.

One area where it can lag is verification of identification. There are restraints on verifying identification for example, that require law firms to ‘physically’ view or witness certain items. This means we must rely on good old snail mail.

If any of you have tried using mail lately, you will know that the term ‘express’ can be a tad exaggerated, further slowing down the process of the contract progressing to completion.

No Quickies in Queensland

So I guess my conclusions are and my advice to those of you moving north (as you should) from the Southern states to beautiful Queensland is this, the quicky settlement days of Queensland are in the past.

While we are pretty much COVID free

we are suffering from a bit of cue of folks wanting to get through the border bubble and into our trouble-free sunshine filled zone.

So while we welcome you with open arms, please exercise calm and patience as there are an awful lot of you in the cue and we will serve you as quickly as we can.

Did you Know?

In this week of solemn ANZAC Day remembrances - here is a fact that many people do not realise.

Although we use poppies to honour the fallen on Anzac Day, the idea of using the flowers doesn’t come from Australia at all. It started thanks to a Canadian named John McCrae who wrote a WWI poem called In Flanders Fields.

Poppies now serve as a reminder of the loss of all veterans in all wars here in Australia, in Canada, in the United States and in many countries around the world.

Come and browse through our extensive range of products and say hi!

The signs of summer are still with us, but Autumn is just around the corner and it is time to think about your autumn and winter veggies. Now is an ideal time to check out our “Garden Section”

March and April are big vegetable planting months in SE Qld. Try tomatoes, capsicums and eggplants; lettuce; radish; beetroot and silverbeet; beans; cucumber and zucchini; cabbage, broccoli; turnip, onion, garlic. If you really want to try broad beans, parsnips or cauliflower, get them in without delay.

Autumn is heading into winter with some areas already experiencing some cooler nights. If you have not already sown your cool temperature vegetables you should get them in now. Planting too late will reduce their cool weather growth period and you might find them going to seed before they can produce..

Gardeners that enjoy a milder winter with a sunny frost free veggie patch can still plant out cucumbers, zucchini, green beans, tomatoes and even capsicums.

Provided you don't have frost, you can also get away with growing a lot of veggies that would normally be considered summer crops.

Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top”

“Back in Northern Territory” ….. continuing on with my mission!

Adelaide Bound! …but plenty to see beforehand

On the way to Adelaide, but having a look around Woomera, South Australia this morning at some of Australia’s Rocket History, some pretty interesting stuff! The Woomera Rocket Range covers an area of approximately 122,188 square kilometers (47,177 square miles) of outback terrain. In conjunction with the British government Woomera was established in 1947 and has been utilised for a variety of functions including the testing and development of missiles, rockets, and aircraft.

It is well worth a visit if you’re travelling past the place.

I was also lucky enough to also visit the Pichi Pichi Railway in Quorn, South Australia. The railway from Port Augusta through the Pichi Richi Pass to Quorn opened in 1879, and was part of the first stage of the Great Northern Railway that was intended to link Port Augusta with Darwin. It was awesome riding Shotgun in the Locomotive cab with the Fireman and the Driver! It would be a great place to be on a cold winter day!

Then it was on to see some of the incredible displays at the Port Pirie RSL Museum. It’s a fantastic tribute to the men and women of our defence forces. It was officially opened in April 2009 and endeavours to display exhibits from the Boar War to present day Afghanistan, including Australian peacekeeping missions that are factual, informative and most importantly easy to understand.
