Maleny Men’s Shed receives Council Grant

Decision on UNESCO Biosphere recognition for Sunshine Coast Council region imminent

Maleny and District Men’s Shed Incorporation Secretary Lindsay Hay said he was thrilled the group had received a major grant recently from the Sunshine Coast Council Grants program, having been awarded $6394 in the Community Facilities category towards erecting a new shed. Maleny Men’s Shed with membership increasing now has more than 50 members.

In 2019, on behalf of the community, the Sunshine Coast Council developed the UNESCO Biosphere nomination and applied for the whole region to be recognised by UNESCO as a world biosphere area and is eagerly awaiting a decision. Currently, Australia has four UNESCO designated biosphere reserves reserves which includes the Great Sandy and Noosa Biosphere Reserves, and across the world there are more than 700 in over 130 countries.

The funding will go towards erecting a shed that was recently donated by the Australian Defence Force. This would allow expansion of the Men’s Shed’s activities

If granted, and a decision is expected by mid June 2022, means UNESCO will of cially recognise the Sunshine Coast as an international site of excellence and an area of natural beauty and gains international recognition, joining the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

Men’s Sheds play an import role in improving men’s health and wellbeing by offering an inclusive and safe place for all men from a local community to come together, and by providing important health information. “Our members are excited to get into alternative activities such as leatherwork, lead lighting, cards and computers, as well as having a breakout space for meals and information sessions.”

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre JP Services have returned to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre at 17 Bicentenary Lane, Maleny. Hours are 9.30-12.30 Monday to Friday. Brought to you by the ‘JP in the Community’ team’.

A biosphere is a special place where responsible development and people working, living and playing sustainably sit alongside active conservation. It is about celebrating people and nature. Having this credential will help us protect and enhance our region, communities, economy and natural assets. Becoming a biosphere will help us create a legacy for our children’s future; care for our beautiful landscapes and stunning beaches; protect, share and celebrate the cultural heritage of our communities and leverage international recognition and economic opportunities to grow local businesses. With so many markets wanting a clean, green product, our biosphere providence it will open up enormous opportunities for our food and agri-business sectors, allowing our local businesses to brand their products and showcase our Sunshine Coast Biosphere. It’s important for our community to understand the fundamental value of sustainability within our region and recognise that we can all play a role in protecting and celebrating this special region where we live, learn, work and play.

You can tune into the meeting live by visiting Council’s website. at: https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Council/Council-Meetings/Meeting-Schedule-2021

Queensland Health advice on how to tackle mould in homes Mould is a type of fungus that is found everywhere, outdoors and indoors. However, exposure to mould can cause health and safety issues. People can be exposed to mould through inhalation, skin contact or ingestion. Most healthy people will not experience health problems from contact with mould, however the risk increases for people with: •

asthma, allergies or other respiratory conditions may be more sensitive to mould

a health condition or undergoing medical treatment that lowers their immunity are more at risk of infection (e.g. cancer and its treatment, organ transplant recipients).

Causes of mould Mould grows in damp, dull and poorly ventilated spaces, such as kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. Dust and dirt also helps mould grow.

Mould is not usually a problem in indoor environments unless there is a source of water or excess moisture that allows it to grow Mould can negatively affect your health.

Preventing mould

wardrobe doors open where possible. •

Clean carpets and rugs regularly using a HEPA (high ef ciency particulate air) lter vacuum cleaner.

Clean up water leaks and spills indoors immediately. If you have any water leaks have them repaired.

Clean evaporation trays in air coolers, dehumidi ers and refrigerators frequently.

Don’t run evaporative air cooling systems with water during high humidity (over 65%). If the air feels humid, run the air cooler without water and open the windows.

Allow space between furniture and walls so air can ow, particularly wardrobes.

Don’t stack boxes or other items against outside walls, especially walls that don’t get a lot of sun.

Place absorbent beads in affected rooms to soak up extra moisture. You can buy these at Maleny Paint Supplies.

The best way to prevent mould and damp is ensure your home is dry and well-aired: •

Allow sunlight into the property as much as possible, especially in the bathroom, laundry and kitchen.

Open doors and windows to allow air to circulate, particularly in the bathroom.

Open windows when you’re cooking, or using a shower, bath or clothes dryer. (Check the air from your clothes dryer is vented outside, not inside. Do not put holes in external walls or ceiling sheets.)

Clean wet areas of your home, such as your bathroom, kitchen and laundry regularly. Wipe away moisture from windows, walls and near taps. Keep bathroom walls, showers, shower curtains, baths and basins as dry as possible.

Truthful Jones says

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t”

Even though the Federal Government was building a quarantine centre at Pinkenbar, Brisbane, near the International Airport to assist with quarantine arrangements due to the spread of the Covid virus, the state g government has decided to go ahead with a centre of its own at Wellcamp in Toowoomba. This complex will be owned by the Wagner Corporation of Toowoomba. As well the state government is paying the Compass Group Australia to manage the site and Aspen Medical to provide medical services to the complex.

Stating it is con dential the state government has declined to con rm the operating cost for the rst year of operation reports have speculated that the price to the Queensland Government will be $190 million. So, should the running costs for the next 12 months be kept secret? What purpose does it serve to keep them secret? So how do we know if it's a better deal than the Pinkenba proposal? Remember that the government does not have any money of its own, only money entrusted to it by taxpayers. Surely those who entrust their money to the government to spend on taxpayers behalf have a right to know just how that money is spent and have a right to know that it is spent whilst getting value for it. Maybe somebody can explain what the “commercial-incon dence” means and how would anyone else bene t, seeing that the deals have already been completed and the matter is nalised. I don’t believe that the government has made any real case as to why this lucrative contract should remain con dential, especially when the money spent is in fact public money. How do taxpayers know if they are really “getting value for their money”.. It this just another instance where there are questions over the state government’s and questions about the quality of government’s administration which have been brought into question by the Coaldrake inquiry into the government’s integrity. This government is not unique in the use of commercial incon dence clauses to hide details. All governments should have to prove that money spent on behalf of the people is in fact spent in a bene cial and ef cient manner.

Truthful tells us that he recently returned to Ireland for a holiday and to see some of his family that he hadn’t seen for a few years. Whilst there he learnt about an Irishman, a Scotsman and an Englishman who are each sentenced to a year in solitary con nement. Before being locked away, each is to be granted a year’s supply of whatever he wants to help him get through the long, long spell alone. The Scotsman asks for a year’s supply of scotch; it’s given to him and he’s locked away. The Irishman asks for a year’s supply of cigarettes so he’s locked up with several thousand cigarettes. The Englishman asks for a year’s supply of pornography and he’s given a giant pile of dirty magazines and the cell door is shut on him. One year later, the doors are all unlocked. The Scotsman staggers out and shouts, ‘I’m free!’ and then keels over dead from alcohol poisoning. The Englishman is dragged out into the light, whereupon he promptly dies of muscle overuse failure. When the door to the Irishman’s cell is opened, everybody watches eagerly to see what sort of a wreck the man has made of himself. To their surprise, he walks right out the door, sidles up to the rst person he sees, and asks, ‘I say you wouldn’t happen to have a light, would ya?’ Morale: There are some things that are better for your health when taken in moderation, or not at all. I think that most of us would rather use in moderation.

DYING WITHOUT A WILL: WHAT HAPPENS? With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny In the last two issues I have been discussing the requirements of a valid Will. I thought it would be a good opportunity to continue the train of thought with what could happen should you die without a valid will. If a person dies without a valid Will, that person is said to have died “intestate”. Dying without a valid will or ‘intestate’ can be very detrimental to your loved ones and also very expensive. Not only have you given away your ability to decide how your estate is to be distributed and to whom but you also run the risk of the costs of administering your estate increasing drastically and your estate being distributed to unintended bene ciaries. One example of an unintended bene ciary is an estranged spouse from whom the deceased was not formally divorced. That estranged spouse will share in the deceased’s estate under the Queensland intestacy rules despite the deceased and the estranged spouse not being in a relationship at the time of death.

The Succession Act sets out the rules to be applied in situations of intestacy. Here are some examples: •

If you are married/de facto with no children, your spouse takes 100%;

If you are married/de facto with one child your spouse takes the rst $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided equally between the spouse and the child

If you are married/de facto with two or more children your spouse takes the rst $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided 1/3 for the spouse and 2/3 equally between the children.

approval for the appointment of someone to administer your estate. In a will you would appoint an executor of your choice. However with an intestacy, your loved ones would have to apply to the Supreme Court for an administrator to be appointed. In the absence of a suitable person the Supreme Court may appoint the Public Trustee. If you are considering a trust or company, please seek legal advice before taking action. Should you have any questions please contact our of ce on 07 5494 3511 Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 17:00 AEST.

Take care everyone! Easton Lawyers

In situations where you do not have any close relatives the rules provide that your estate must go to relatives that are further removed from you. Another problem with dying intestate is the need for court

For the team at Easton Lawyers it is a privilege to help people through tough and stressful times and if the client cannot come to them this is no obstacle as home visits and/or hospital visits are a service they provide.

It's National Volunteer Week! National Volunteer Week (NVW) is Australia's largest annual celebration of volunteering and will be held on 16-22 May 2022. The week runs between May 16th and May 22nd. Volunteering is widespread and diverse with millions of people volunteering every year to support communities across the country. According to the 2016 Census, Maleny has one of the highest volunteer rates in Qld! In 2016, 33% of adults in Maleny volunteered in some capacity, with 25% being the average in Qld - so we can’t wait to see what the most recent Census results will reveal. Traditionally and historically, Maleny’s cheerful volunteers have banded together to create and

- “so thank our vollies”

maintained facilities that the town needed themselves since the turn of the century. It began naturally enough with sports, with equestrian, tennis, football, bowls, golf and cricket being some of the earliest facilities provided. This trend has long continued and has been growing ever since those early small country town days to include a myriad of great activities available today for all ages to enjoy. The theme of National Volunteer Week 2022 is – Better Together. Who would disagree? Volunteering brings people together; it builds communities and creates a better society for everyone. Volunteers give their time, effort and skills to better our society. The contribution of over 3 million Queensland volunteers (75% of adults) has provided unparallelled assistance to people and causes across our state. National Volunteer Week is a chance for all of us to celebrate and recognise the vital work of volunteers and to say thank you.

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top” Lest we forget Due to a family illness Sam has had to return to Maleny for a short time to assist the family during their time of need. Whilst he is back in Maleny he is also attending some community events. He has given a report to the Maleny Rotary Club who sponsors him and also attended the 2022 ANZAC Day ceremony. It was a beautiful rainy Maleny for the ANZAC day service. Glad to be lucky enough to have an akubra and a Dysabone to keep the rain at bay. The local RSL, SES and all the other organisations that work tirelessly to organise the parade each year never disappoint, and ensure that w e will never forget what freedoms we enjoy today because of their sacri ce Lest we forget.

Remembering Aussie Trucks who have also lost their lives serving Australia

Whilst I have been home I made a bit of a trip to go and see an organisation that’s very dear to myself and many others, the Lights on the Hill Trucking Memorial in Gatton. Along my travels some of the nicest and most helpful people I’ve met are truckies in the transport industry, and what a lot of people don’t realise is just how dif cult a job it can be both mentally and physically on the men and women behind the wheel and to the families of the drivers back home. Trucks deliver virtually everything in the shops that you go to, and without them Australia would be brought to a standstill, they battle through 40°+ heat and blown tyres way out west in the most remote country imaginable delivering fuel and supplies to stations one week, then dealing with city traf c delivering food the next. They Sometimes spend weeks away from family and as is evident on every plaque on the memorial ,sometimes mummy or daddy don’t come home - every name that memorial has a family back home waiting for them. So Just a thought for next time you see a truck on the road, or get stuck behind one, remember, they’re serving you and everyone you know with the food on your plates and the fuel in your car, and without their sacri ce we wouldn’t be able to enjoy what we have in day to day life. Without Trucks Australia Stops shift is over

Who

Remembers

this?

With the 2022 Maleny Show soon upon us, it is now a good time to remember when the Maleny Show Pavilion was re-newed. In 1987 local builder, Mr. Ed Lawley took on the project of rebuilding the old show pavilion. How much or little has this place changed?

Be a real “Mate” Make sure that you look after your mates Treat them all well!. There are no places for bullies or abusers.

The Maleny Agricultural Show is on May 27th and 28th, 2022. This show has a long and strong link to the area since its humble beginnings on April 24 1923, the rst Maleny Show was held on the same show-grounds. The photo above shows the Maleny Show Pavilion being rebuilt and it was nished in time for the 1987 show. The work was completed by local Maleny builder, Mr. Ed Lawley. Ed has gone on to oversee many projects in the Maleny Show Grounds.
