Australia overwhelmingly votes “NO” to the referendum on an Aboriginal Voice The vote to change the constitution has failed dismally, but it does not mean that the “job” has been nished. It was not a vote to not bridge the gap between indigenous people and others. Australians want and need to be treated equally and fairly!
F
rom the start the promise that a Vote for adding indigenous people’s voice be added to the constitution was shrouded in politics and nothing to do with improving the lot of indigenous people. It is important to note that Australians have taken place in an event that was democratically triggered. Both sides of the argument put their argument to the people of Australia. Some of the protagonists have not acted with true dignity. There were times of bullying tactics used. The allegation that “to vote NO makes you a racist” is not only totally incorrect, but is an instance of bullying tactics. It is important to remember that we are all Australians and we should all be treated equally. It is also important to ensure that we all are able to enjoy the same privileges and all recognised equally within the laws of Australia. Whilst the people of Australia voted NO to this proposal does not mean that they do not want the best for indigenous peoples. Over the past
decades the Australian people’s have allocated many billions of dollars into making conditions better for indigenous people, even though the results might not indicate that. This vote appears to have been brought more from a political point of view than from bene ting indigenous peoples. This vote is not the end, but should be a new start. There should be an immediate review of the various programs that were meant to improve the lot of the indigenous. For the amounts of funding supplied to the many Aboriginal corporations and self help bodies there has been very few positive outcomes. Where did the funding go and just how was it spent. A review should investigate whether bureaucratic procedures got I the way or were there other reasons why the copious amounts of fundings were spent with no positive results. The old saying “keep doing things we have in the past because it is always how we did it” leads to failure. There is another saying that could b regarded and that is ‘money corrupts and Continued Page 3

Th recent bush res around the Beerwah area presented us with a timely reminder to be prepared. Sunshine Coast area now has a world-leading tool to help safeguard people, properties, and our natural assets. This AIassisted program, developed by local Sunshine Coast company, exci analyses satellite images and on-ground cameras to swiftly spot heat and smoke. Once a re is detected, emergency services and council will receive immediate reports and can consider an appropriate response in consultation with other partner agencies. This bush re detection system was the result of a collaboration between Queensland Fire & Emergency Services, HQ Plantations, Powerlink as well as Sunshine Coast based businesses exci and Landwatch Australia. This system is an Australian family made and owned re detection system being operated from Palmwoods. The system can automatically detect bush res within minutes, using satellite and ground-based sensors and data is analysed by powerful, machine-learning algorithms. The system has been proven to detect and report 95% res within 5 minutes. During the 2020/2021 re season the system detected nearly 30,000 res within Australia. Presently, exci and Landwatch Australia have begun installing cameras at new sites located at Gerrards Lookout at Maleny, Dulong Lookout and Mount Coolum. The company is also known for delivering remote, camera surveillance solutions to Australian farmers and rural communities. They have solutions to keep up to date with stock watering holes, property entrance and exit points and security of out buildings. Property owners can now upgrade their knowledge instantly about each of those things without the need to physically visit each site. This is a great savings in both time and money. The Sunshine Coast Council has a “Disaster Hub” which displays weather warnings, road closures and evacuation centres listed on one easy-to-use site. It also links to airport updates, traf c cameras, ood mapping and Council’s news updates and social media. Being prepared is everyone’s responsibility. more money corrupts absolutely.” From speaking to people leaving Maleny school polling booth revealed that one of the biggest issues was that there were no real details about what was actually proposed and a lack of those details set their vote. They believed that this referendum divided the people of Australia. There was one thought that did ring out and that was that Australia must do better for indigenous people who were suffering, particularly in the more rural regions. The problem is not more advice, not more money. As about $40 billion is spent annually by Australian taxpayers to close the gap. There’s goodwill from Australian people, there’s money, and there’s lots of advice, but no accountability and no of cial responsibility for outcomes. Prime Minister, Mr. Anthony Albanese said it was "not the end of the road" for Indigenous recognition, vowing to "continue to listen to people and to their communities”. The $500 million plus dollars spent on this campaign would have been better spent at the very seat of the problem within remote communities, not on Aboriginal bureaucrats and their ego rich proposals. It might be easier to say than do, but Australia’s peoples needs to move forward from the toxicity of this referendum campaign. The
campaign had very little to do with making life better for Australia’s First People, more about a political statement and creating credit towards the next Federal election. Fist Nations peoples have ben represented in Australian Parliaments for over 50 years, starting with the election of Neville Bonner to the Senate in June 1971 whilst Indigenous peoples had the same voting rights as anybody else since 1950. Between1972 and 1990 Australia did in fact have a permanent Department of Aboriginal Affairs speci cally to ensure the rights and responsibilities of Australia’s Indigenous peoples. This included a speci c Aboriginal Development Commission. In 1973 Indigenous people elect 41 members of the National Aboriginal Consultative committee to advise the Federal Government on Aboriginal needs. That was the forerunner to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, commonly called ATSIC which was abolished in 2005 as a result of perceived poor governance and poor project results. Presently The National Indigenous Australians Agency is funded to the tune of $2.645 BILLION dollars for their projects aimed at helping Indigenous Australians to bridge the gap in their lifestyle to that of other Australians. There is also a special funding program over the

ve years from 2022 to the value of $497 dollars and in 2023 an extra $424 million dollars was added towards “closing the gap”. This is on top of funding through the Department of Indigenous Affairs. There are many other funding grants totalling billions of dollars speci cally for Indigenous people for various projects. That is only right and proper, but how much of this money is being spent effectively and wisely and not wasted by the bureaucracy, or even worse through corruption. There are presently 151 First Nations people sitting in one of the various state and federal government parliaments. They are there to represent the people of Australia, as are each and every other member of parliament. If these people are not representing their constituents then what are they doing? If they cannot do the job then maybe it is time that each of those elected representatives are removed and replaced with a new representative that can do the job. After all each and every one of them is well remunerated to do their job ef ciently and equally partisan. Australians must now come together as one if our nation is to prosper and succeed as a developed nation. Decided people can only mean a divided Nation. Shop Locally & Shop with a Friend 3

Repairing Rotted Timber Window Sills CAUSE The problem normally starts with the paint breakdown through one simple factor…..co-ef cient differentials of expansion and contraction. In plain terms, where the paint system bridges a 90 degree angle with a sharp internal corner, the 2 timbers move at different rates according to their densities/ thicknesses and as a result “stretch” the paints beyond their ability to maintain relative adhesion to the timber.
However if there is still some structural integrity, saturating the soft dozy timber with NORGLASS NORSEAL can provide a permanent solution. To do this remove (by sanding) any residual paint, then drill holes randomly along the sill, at about a 30 degree angle.
Then mix up a volume (250ml mix) of Norseal and using a small funnel pour the mixture into the holes. As the Norseal drains away, This occurs as the paint come back and re ll them. Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell M.P. Maleny Meet and Greet another great success Maleny Lions “Meet and Greet 2023”
Proposed Desalination Plant
It was great to meet so many new residents to Maleny and surrounds at this year’s Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club “Meet and Greet” which was held on October 8th at Tranquil, Maleny. Included in those attending were John and Pattie Murray who move in on Monday 9th. Welcome!
It disturbs me that the Palaszczuk Government has not ruled out building their proposed $8 Billion dollar desalination plant on Bribie Island.
This is the 18th year of this Maleny Lions event.
Plans to build a new desalination plant in south-east Queensland have been met with concern from experts and environmentalists. The cost would be picked up by water users of the area.

Mr. Andrew Wallace Federal MP for Fisher Federal Member for Fisher Human Rights Violations continue in Afghanistan
Did you know that since the Taliban resumed control of Afghanistan in August 2021, the de facto government has introduced more than 65 decrees and edicts which have drastically reduced the human rights of women and girls to get jobs, be educated and take part in a normal social life.
Women's rights activists report that there have been detentions, child marriages, forced marriages and rapes.
Many countries today labelled this as “gender apartheid”, ie a systematic policy of a government which oppresses one gender by another.
Almost one month ago, I arrived in New York, on the eve of September 11, that fateful day when, back in 2001, nearly 3000 Americans lost their lives to al-Qaeda terrorists in four separate attacks on the United States in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
As co-chair of the Australian Parliamentary Friendship Group for Afghanistan - and having travelled there twice - it broke my heart to hear the many accounts of HumanRights violations of as many as 100,000 cases of extra-judicial killings, torture and sexual assault of women and girls.
I attended the September 11 Memorial the next day to pay homage to those innocent souls who needlessly lost their lives but the memorial was closed to the public, allowing only family members of those lost. I went again a few days later to pay my respects.

What used to be one of the biggest sporting events in Australia, The Bathurst 1000 road race is no longer the iconic Australian event that it previously was. No longer is it Australian made Holden verses Australian made Ford. Just how did this sorry end come about? The Decline in Manufacturing in Australia has brought about many changes to the Australian people, and was it worth it in the end? Manufacturing has long been a signi cant component of Australia's economy, providing jobs and contributing to the nation's overall economic growth. However, over the past few decades, the manufacturing sector in Australia has witnessed a steady decline, impacting various aspects of the economy and society. Have you ever thought about the causes, timing, and consequences of this decline.
made it dif cult for Australian manufacturers to produce goods at a competitive price. 4.
Technological Changes: Advances in technology, while generally bene cial, also led to automation and a decrease in labourintensive manufacturing processes. This shift had a signi cant impact on employment in the manufacturing sector.
5.
Decline in Tariffs and Protectionism: The Australian government gradually reduced tariffs and protectionist policies, which had historically supported the local manufacturing industry. While these changes aligned with global trade agreements and encouraged free trade, they left local ma
The Beginning of the Decline The decline in manufacturing in Australia can be traced back to the early 1980s. Several factors converged to set the stage for this decline: Globalisation: The era of globalisation brought increased competition from low-cost manufacturing countries, particularly in Asia. Australian manufacturers struggled to compete with the lower production costs and wages in countries like China, which led to a gradual erosion of their competitiveness.
1.
Exchange Rates: Fluctuations in exchange rates, particularly the soaring Australian dollar, further hampered the competitiveness of Australian-made goods in international markets. A stronger dollar made Australian exports more expensive and less attractive to foreign buyers.
2.
High Production Costs: Australia's relatively high labor costs, stringent regulatory requirements, and the expense of complying with environmental standards all contributed to higher production costs. This

The Consequences of Declining Manufacturing The decline in manufacturing in Australia has had wide-ranging consequences, affecting the economy, employment, and society as a whole: 1.
Job Losses: The most signi cant impact has been the loss of manufacturing jobs. As factories closed or downsized, thousands of workers were left unemployed. This not only led to economic hardship for individuals and communities but also placed additional strain on government welfare programs.
2.
Economic Diversi cation: The decline in manufacturing has pushed Australia toward a more service-oriented economy. While this shift has its bene ts, it also makes the country more vulnerable to economic downturns, as the manufacturing sector often acts as a stabilising force during tough times. 4.
5.
Trade Imbalance: As manufacturing declined, Australia's trade balance shifted. The nation began importing more manufactured goods while exporting fewer, which contributed to a persistent trade de cit. Skills Gap: The decline in manufacturing has created a skills gap, as the workforce that once supported this sector struggled to nd alternative employment. Many workers had to undergo retraining to adapt to jobs in other industries. Regional Impact: The decline in manufacturing has hit regional areas particularly hard, as many of these communities relied heavily on manufacturing jobs. The loss of these jobs has had a domino effect on local businesses and economies.
Attempts at Revival While the decline in manufacturing has been substantial, there have been efforts to revive the sector: 1.
2.
3.
Advanced Manufacturing: Some Australian manufacturers have shifted their focus to advanced manufacturing, embracing technology and innovation to produce high-value, specialised products. This approach has allowed them to compete in niche markets. Government Initiatives: The Australian government has implemented various initiatives and funding programs aimed at supporting and revitalising the manufacturing sector. These programs encourage research and development, innovation, and skills training. Local Sourcing: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerability of global supply chains. This prompted some companies and policymakers to consider the bene ts of

sourcing essential goods locally, potentially boosting domestic manufacturing. 4.
Sustainability: There is growing interest in sustainable manufacturing practices. Australian manufacturers are exploring ways to produce goods with a smaller environmental footprint, which could make them more competitive on the global stage.
Conclusion Globalisation, which was sold to the Australian people as a panacea for Australia’s problems was in fact nothing but a sign of greed by International Global companies who were out to maximise their pro ts and reduce their requirement to provide services to the Australian people as crafty accountants found ways to skirt nancial requirements, not only for Australia, but most other nations in the world. The decline in manufacturing in Australia, which began in the early 1980s, has been driven by a complex interplay of factors, including globalisation, exchange rates, high production costs, technological changes, and the decline of protectionist policies. This decline in manufacturing also reduced the skilled workmanship of Australia’s workers. This has had long termed detrimental effects on Australia’s industry. It will take decades to turn this around and get to a point where Australia once again can become a major manufacturing country. This decline has had signi cant consequences for the Australian economy, employment, and society. While there have been efforts to revive the manufacturing sector, its future remains uncertain, and the nation continues to grapple with the challenges posed by this decline. The Australian government, businesses, and communities will need to work together to navigate this evolving landscape and identify opportunities for growth and innovation in manufacturing. Roadworks To Commence In Lawyer Street, Maleny The Sunshine Coast Council will be carrying out kerb and channel replacement work in Lawyer Street and Cudgerie Street, Maleny between Monday 30th October and Friday 10th November. The work performed in this instance is preparation to a complete road reseal of Lawyer and Cudgerie Streets. Noti cation of this work will be given separately prior to commencement. During the time that works are being undertaken there will be no parking in the area marked in orange as shown on the map. There will still be access to businesses in that area and traf c movement will be controlled by traf c controllers to ensure motorist and workers safety.
The Council Road Reseal and Rehabilitation Program is to ensure that council roads are safe for motorists. This is just part of the 2200 kilometres of roadway for which the council is responsible. Through this program council repairs road failures and improves road surfaces. Vehicle movement in the streets will be restricted when work starts and every attempt to minimise disruptions will be made. It is recommended to plan ahead and allow more time for your travel during work periods.
The schedule of work is subject to weather conditions and can change due to circumstances outside of council's control. Contractors carry out this work on behalf of council.
Driveway access Any businesses who have any concerns or questions about access to your driveway during work do not hesitate to approach the traf c control staff. Unfortunately, this roadwork does not include any new work on the side of Lawyer Street that at this time does not have and footpath or guttering which creates another problem in itself.

Truthful Jones says
An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions Over the past few years and as the weather appears to be getting hotter and urban sprawl continues to expand into once bush areas there needs to be further thinking into just how bush res are going to be fought in the not too far future, that future might be in the next few months as we far as we know. From the outset we must say that aircraft alone are not a solution to ghting bush res. Interaction between aircraft and re crews is necessary to bring a re fully under control. In areas that are more dif cult to access, or where there is an extreme danger of forest res, re ghting aircraft are the only option for a truly rapid rst attack on out of control res. Another thing for sure is that aerial re ghting is expensive, but doing nothing is more expensive! Aircraft types are important as there is a necessity not only to cover the re with water based re suppressants, but to insert and rescue crew and machinery into the scene, quite often into rugged terrain which is not accessed by roads. Today some aircraft are used in re ghting operations, mainly aircraft from overseas with overseas crews. With re seasons around the world getting longer and more severe many of these aircraft will become unavailable at critical times. The 2020 bush re royal commission recommended improved aerial re ghting capabilities. . Unfortunately, it would not be ‘practical, sensible or costeffective’ for any one state or territory to maintain all the necessary specialised aerial assets to address all its possible aerial re ghting needs for any re season. The effectiveness of any re ghting aircraft initially depends on the weather and more importantly the distance that aircraft have to travel from their “home base” to the re scene.
And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t” That a Texan walks into the Maleny pub and clears his voice to the crowd of regular drinkers. He says, “I hear you Aussies are a bunch of hard drinkers. I’ll give $500 American dollars to anybody in here who can drink 10 pints of Guinness back-to-back.” The room is quiet and no one takes up the Texan’s offer. One man even leaves. Ten minutes later the same gentleman who left shows back up and taps the Texan on the shoulder. “Is your bet still good?”, asks this Aussie. The Texan says yes and asks the bartender to line up 10 pints of Guinness. Immediately the Aussie tears into all 10 of the pint glasses drinking them all back-toback. The other pub patrons cheer as the Texan sits in amazement. The Texan gives the Aussie the $500 and says, “If ya don’t mind me askin’, where did you go for that 10 minutes you were gone?” The Aussie replies, “Oh…I had to go to the bar at Tranquil Park Resort out on Mt View Road to see if I could do it rst”.
One central agency to have control and dispersal of re ghting aircraft could be the Department of Defence, RAAF. They would have the ability to arrange mechanical maintenance of those aircraft. Already the have eets of both xed wing and rotary wing aircraft. When ordering new aircraft perhaps thought could be given to having any general purpose aircraft adaptable to multiple roles. This would also provide a pool of highly experienced fully trained pilots always available for these roles. During periods of expected high risk seasons aircraft could be pre located throughout Australia.

Who Gives A Crap? -
We Do!
What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets? We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under ve dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Pro ts from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top”
“Returning to Darwin”
….. continuing on with my mission!
Now I am back in Darwin. One of the things that I had to do was visit the Darwin Military Museum.
The Museum's origins can be traced to 1976 when a group of enthusiasts sought to preserve aviation relics after the destruction of Cyclone Tracy
The Darwin Military Museum is an amazing collection of not only equipment but also personal items of the men and women who have served this country for generations. The museum provides a learning and commemorative war experience about the NT, also other parts of Australia’s, rich military history in a sensitive and respectful manner.
I have now returned to Berry Springs where I’ve Spent the last few days working for Berry Springs Mechanical doing at out tilt tray/towing work. I’ve been out on my own with the truck picking up everything from homemade mango picking machines to forklifts and even BMWs and of course more Toyota’s than you can poke a stick t.
On the 9th February 1942 more than 188 Japanese aircraft attacked Darwin's harbour and air eld. It was the rst and the largest foreign attack ever mounted on Australia soil.
Just clocked over 500hrs driving Slim at around 35-45kph That’s a few bumps in the saddle that’s for sure. Just another day along my journey!!!
Another great museum is Darwin’s Australian Aviation Heritage Centre. This museum is an absolutely amazing display of our country’s Aviation history and more!.
Be a real “Mate” Make sure that you look after your mates Treat them all well!. There are no places for bullies or abusers.

Remembers
this?
Maleny State School 1959. Maleny Central School, as it was then known rst opened in Cedar Street, Maleny with an enrolment of 32 pupils which quickly rose to 52 pupils within the rst week. The rst permanent teacher was Mr Burnett Bruce. There were a number of other local schools in the area, all of which subsequently closed and the Maleny State School became the central school for the district. The North Maleny School closed in 1952 and was moved to the Maleny Primary School site to become the Maleny High School. The original Maleny State School was relocated from Cedar Street to the present Bunya Street location. The new school buildings were opened by the Hon Francis Nicklin, Premier of Qld in 1959.
