Maleny Show 2021 ready set go! In spite of the COVID-19 epidemic and following the cancellation of the 2020 show as a result the Maleny Agricultural Show will go ahead with more family events including KC’s Fireworks on both nights. Even though there will be no Rodeo this year there will plenty to keep everyone entertained. One event that will prove extremely popular is the Monster Truck Extravaganza which will also be on both nights with the Saturday night being an extra special truck show.
Popular Maleny Musician Damien Barnes will also be on stage on both nights. So, you can see there will be plenty to keep everyone entertained - so don’t miss it. Parking in the Show Grounds will be extremely limited, but there will be a courtesy bus continually running from three off-site parking areas. The rst bus will commence at 8 a.m. and then continue until late at night. Those areas are situated at the Maleny Historical Village, Maleny High School and Maleny Dairies Farm 44 Tallowood Street, Maleny.

New Tables at Porters Farm
Maleny Showgrounds Amenities Upgrade
New picnic tables have been installed on Porters Farm Park, Maleny - The tables are picnic combo tables and the installation is not completed.
The Maleny Showgrounds Amenities Upgrade has been completed in time for the upcoming Maleny Agricultural Show.
This project involved the removal and disposal of 2 existing picnic combos which had reached the end of their life. The 2 new tables are installed on concrete slabs.
All works were completed in conjunction with the upgrade of the newly renovated secretaries of ce with which we shared our site.
Speed reduction Maleny-Stanley River Road
The Department of Main Roads has advised that a three mile section of Maleny-Stanley River Road west of Maleny between Witham Road and River Road has had a speed reduction from80kph to 70kph. This followed complaints about speed and a study of accident statistics which caused a review of the roadway.
The work included site preparation including the removal of the existing vegetation; Construction and t out of the amenities building; landscaping, drainage and pathways including PWD car space.
All appropriate signage has now been implemented.
Walking Whilst Drawing Sensory Walk with Libby Derham On June 5th, 2021 between 10a.m. and 11.30a.m. you can join watercolour artist Libby Derham as she takes you on an immersive sensory drawing walk through Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Mountain View Road, Maleny.
Inside the amenities block we have 3x male urinals, 4x cubicles with 1 ambulant, 1x PDW with shower and baby change table, 1x change room with separate cubical and sink, change room benches and internal shower and 3x main basins.
This is a great opportunity to learn to slow down and soak up the sights, sounds and scents of the reserve rainforest, whilst creating a personal record of your journey on a mark-making scroll. After the walk, Libby will share how she turns these scrolls into contemporary watercolour works of art.

RIP “Doug Watson” Another sad day with the passing of long time member Doug Watson. Doug passed away on Saturday, 8th May. His funeral was on Monday 17th May at the Maleny Uniting Church. The Watson family have been a part of Maleny for long time, coming to Maleny with his family in 1944. Our condolences go out to the entire Watson Family.

500g Beef Rib Eye on the bone, trimmed (Cattleman’s Cutlet) Olive Oil 50g unsalted butter, chopped
1.
Allow steak to come to room temperature on the bench, at least 30 mins, before cooking. Preheat barbecue to high. Whisk together olive oil, red wine vinegar and sugar in a large bowl. Add shallots and tomato, stir well. Add rocket and basil, toss to combine.

Pat steak dry with paper towel, drizzle both sides with oil, and sprinkle with a good pinch of sea salt. Place on preheated barbecue and cook 12 minutes. Turn and cook a further 10–12 minutes. Transfer steak to a plate, cover loosely with foil, and rest for 10 mins.
3.
While the steak is resting, melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sage and cook, stirring, until leaves start to crisp. Remove from heat and drizzle over beef. Serve steak and sage butter with salad.

They are looking for volunteers. Maleny RFB will be assisting various landowners over the next couple of months to conduct Hazard Reduction Burns in the hinterland areas. As a result of those burns there will, from time to time, some smoke hazards. Please take care, especially on our roads during those times. On another matter, Maleny Singers have decided to devote their annual musical production to support the Maleny Fire Brigade, in honour of its crucial role in keeping res from our doors during last years severe res. The Yeomen of the Guard, one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s more durable comic operas, will be presented at the Maleny Community Centre on June 12 at 6.30pm and June 13,19 and 20 at 2pm. The new Maleny Emergency Service Building at the corner of Macadamia Drive and Dixon Avenue, Maleny has at last come out of the ground and the framework has been commenced. It will jointly house the Maleny RFB + SES Group and Maleny Auxiliary Fire Service. The complex was budgeted to be built for an estimated cost of $5 million. It is expected to be nalised late 2021.
Take more care with scams This week there has been a number of people around Maleny reporting that they have been receiving phone calls from a well spoken female advising that she was from “Bank Security” and advising that some unexpected withdrawals being made “from your credit card”. She then requests card details for security reasons and then she will have the unexpected withdrawals returned to the card. Take care with personal details and extra care with credit and debit card details. Do not give anyone unknown permission to take control of your computer. “There are a million scams out there - take care.”

An Old Codger’s Thoughts and opinion As Queensland starts to move beyond the COVID crisis it is important that the State economy is brought back under control. Over the past few years the number of public servants has grown, with the majority of the increase not being in front line services, but in bureaucracy. Up until June 30th, 2020 the Queensland’s public service workforce has grown by 35,697 since 2015 and the state's wage bill has increased by a half a billion dollars in 2020 alone. For the twelve months to June 30th, 2020 the state's wage bill come in at $26.3 billion. The number of public servants is expected to continue to increase by at least 2% each year for the foreseeable future whilst the population growth is expected to continue at about 1.5% per year. It is expected that about 6800 extra bureaucrats will be hired this nancial year. All of this at a time that “front line” staff such as paramedics, nurses, doctors, police and other important service providers are in short supply. It would appear that the government is more interested in completing or shuf ing paper than actually providing urgently needed services. On top of these costs the Government also spent an estimated the estimated $100 million dollars on outside consultants to provide the government with “expert” advice. The Queensland Government total debt is expected to increase to $102 billion by June 30th, 2021. All of this comes at a time when GST receipts to Queensland continue to fall as a result of a spending drop due to the Covid restrictions. On top of this all there has been an increase of $1.3 billion in the Queensland government's superannuation and employee entitlement obligations, and a decrease of $3.1 billion in the value of the investments held to fund these obligations. Where does this leave us all as taxpaying Queenslanders. This debt will be being paid off by out greatgrandkids.

After a long, busy day, his neighbour settled down in his seat after the train left Central Station . Near him sat a young blond haired lady who had closed her eyes as the train left Central station for the hour-long ride to Beerwah Station. Unfortunately for the blond lady, within minutes, Truthful’s neighbour who was sitting close to her pulled out his cell phone and started talking in a very loud voice. "Hi, sweetheart, it's Eric. I'm on the train. Yes, I know it's 6:30, but I had a long meeting. No, honey, not with that oozy from the accounting of ce, with the boss. No, sweetheart, you're the only one in my life. Yes, I'm sure. Cross my heart," etc. Fifteen minutes later, Truthful’s neighbour was still talking loudly when the young woman sitting near to him, obviously fed up with his continuous diatribe, yelled at the top of her voice, "Hey Eric, turn off that stupid phone and come back to bed!" Lesson learnt the hard way - Eric doesn't use his phone in public anymore. I wonder if the blonde lady realises the trouble that she caused for Eric. Perhaps many other commuters could take heed and learn a lesson from this incident, otherwise they too might have some very dif cult explaining to do when they get home.

Barcaldine Supports Sam Signs around Barcaldine bore he message; Empty your spare change into "The Travelling Jackaroo" tins when you see him about town in coming days.”. Sam perfectly timed his visit to Barcaldine yesterday for the Labour Day parade down the street. In his travels from Maleny to raise funds for three worthy causes, so far he has gained generous donations to the tune of about $6,000 for the RFDS (Royal Flying Doctors Service), $5,000 for the Dolly Everett Foundation in honour of the youngster who took her life as a result of cyber bullying, and approx $500 for the Drought Angels. He has gained about 40,000 followers on his Facebook page "The Travelling Jackaroo”. Congratulations Sam.

The Centre is open from 9 am to 3 pm Monday to Friday. While the Centre does appreciate donations that support their Emergency Relief Program, please do not leave donations at our door because they have limited space. The blanket box is now up and running in conjunction with the Coat Rack. The blanket box already has had four or ve blankets placed in it. Later that day and just like that, down to one blanker. They are obviously needed as the weather starts to cool down. Thanks to those of you who suggested blankets and also to those who supplied the blankets.

Tough Times during the depression in Maleny Australia suffered badly during the period of the Great Depression of the 1930s. The Depression began with the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and rapidly spread worldwide.
It was common practice for local businesses such as the bakeries, Co-operative and the rest to run accounts for the farmers because the farmers were paid for their dairy products monthly.
As in other nations, Australia suffered years of high unemployment, poverty, low pro ts, de ation, plunging incomes, and lost opportunities for economic growth and personal advancement.
As the depression hit the return to farmers for their dairy products dropped to almost nothing.
Maleny families suffered throughout this time as did families throughout the world.
Realising that if the shop-keepers went broke then nobody would be able to get their everyday needs.
People become very adaptable during those tough times. During those times relief comes from some unexpected directions. Maleny has always had a strong dairying industry and this has helped to off set some of those dif cult times.
The Singh and Kaha families, realising that they could not get work so they agreed to tend to the cattle on behalf of the new owners. Some dairy products were sold to the butter factory by the two families whilst other of the products were used to feed the families of the two families along with the Myers and Hurst families.
As a result those farmers were unable to pay the shop-keepers for the goods that were already purchased.
The Hirst then sold their share to Jim Waddell during the depression. Jim Waddell later bought out Bob Myer's share. This method of paying for goods continued until after the depression came to an end in the mid 1930’s thus the various retail businesses were able to survive during the economic downturn.
The farmers and the shop-keepers came to an agreement whereby the shop-keepers were paid for goods with cattle.
When the depression hit in the late1920’s - 1930’s there were two Afghan families, named The Kaha family and the Singh Family living in Maleny.
Myers and Hurst General Store was the general food and other goods store in Maleny. It was situated where Boxsells Real Estate is now situated. Myers and Hurst became perhaps the biggest purchaser of dairy cows through this scheme.
These two families had 20 children between them.
The store-keepers acquired reasonably sized herds.
Other men supported their families were a part of the Great Depression employment scheme working at the Landsborough Shire Council quarry and crushing plant which was situated at Bald Knob, Maleny. The remains can still be seen on Hovard Road, Bald Knob. Farmers were mostly self suf cient because they had to be, or because they could be.

This photo was taken at the Maleny Show Pavilion in October 2008. There are many familiar fashion faces to be seen. This night of fun was. fundraiser for the Cancer Council and was hosted by the Apex Club of Maleny. This evening was run in conjunction with the annual “Relay for Life” which was held at the Maleny Show Grounds. This group of “young” women who were let loose on the unsuspecting Maleny community caused many heart palpitations.
