“Maleny Probus & Senior Citizens to visit Toowoomba”

The Maleny Probus Club and Maleny Senior Citizens Club invite are active retirees who are involved in community events for fellowship and fun. One of these events is a “sight-seeing” trip to Toowoomba on October 22nd and 23rd October, 2022.

The Maleny Probus Club and Maleny Senior Citizens Club have joined to take a bus trip to Toowoomba via Esk on Saturday October 22nd, 2022. A dinner at the Valletta Restaurant finishes off the day.

Following a night out in Toowoomba on the Sunday before leaving Toowoomba they will be visiting the Cobb and Co Museum. The Cobb+Co Museum is part of the Queensland Museum Network and opened in the old Toowoomba Showgrounds building in December 1987.

On the way home on the Sunday they will visit “The Barn and Scotty’s Garage” at Flagstone Creek. It will be a a real setback in time for those on the trip, maybe a setback towards memories of their teenage years.

If you out there are looking for a community group to join - just check these two groups out as this is just one of many trips they do.

Queensland Country Bank Scam Message

Queensland Country Bank has become aware of a scam message currently circulating, targeting Queensland Country Bank Members. The message is in the form of an SMS (pictured below) directing you to update your details via a link.

Who remembers having a phone as in the photo at home. This was a common type of home phone for those homes where a phone could be afforded.

It was quite heavy, black and made of Bakelite. It was made by AWA from 1934. It would usually sit on its own table, displayed with pride as an indication of importance.

With fraud on the rise, it is important to remain vigilant about scams and remember that Queensland Country Bank would never ask their Members to provide account specific details such as passwords, PIN numbers or verification codes via a SMS link, email or an outbound phone call

To find out more visit the web site: https://www.queenslandcountry.bank/help-info/alerts/scamalert/

or visit Queensland Country Bank Branch at 28 Maple Street, Maleny. (Phone 07 5435 5700).

If you think you have been a victim of a scam, please get in touch with contact centre 1800 075 078 or emailinfo@queenslandcountry.bank.

More rainfall to hit our area

A B.O.M. spokesperson said there would be a general increase in rainfall across the Sunshine Coast area between Friday 21st and Monday, October 24th, as storms were predicted to cross the area throughout the weekend.

At this time the Wappa Dam at Nambour is overflowing and both the Ewan Maddock Dam and Baroon Pocket Dams are at about 98% capacity. The surrounding areas are already waterlogged.

Sunshine Coast residents should “take each day as it comes” and to watch for weather warnings. Extra care should be taken on storm effected roads as the long continuing wet weather has continued to degrade them quicker than authorities can repair them.

Remember the road safety warning “if it is flooded then forget it”. Many drivers who have not headed the message have paid a huge price when their vehicle has been flooded off the roadway.

Landslips Eat some of our roadways!

The impact of a series of major landslips caused by recent weather events has been assessed with a number of roadways in our local area facing significant repairs.

Heavy rain hit the region between February and May with the worst affected areas being Bald Knob, Wootha, Glenview, Eudlo, Peachester, and Montville..

The cost of rebuilding the most damaged roads is estimated at $15 million and could take up to two years with highest priority being given to those with the most significant impact.

Recovery and rectification works started immediately and would continue for some time.

Geotechnical assessments have identified 12 major landslip sites that require engineered solutions and funding support.

Assistance will be provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Council continues to work closely with the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, all levels of government, along with emergency and community agencies, to support our community as the region navigates the long-term impacts of the flooding events.

The 12 major landslip sites across our region include:

Policeman Spur Road, Wootha

Bald Knob Road, Bald Knob

Leeding Road, Glenview

Perrins Road, Eudlo

River Road, Peachester

Narrows Road, Montville

Hovard Road - Slip , Bald Knob

Hovard Road - Slip 2, Bald Knob

Old Maleny Road, Landsborough

Some roads have been closed or reduced to single lane access, based on preliminary reports about road stability. While this is inconvenient, the road closures are necessary for the safety of residents

Landslip repair works include removing soil and vegetation debris, constructing mass block retaining walls, buried pile and beam walls, drainage works, road reconstruction and stabilising sloped hillsides.

If you see a pothole, don’t assume someone else has already reported it. Do your good deed for the day and report it for the safety of other road users at: https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ Council/Contact-Council.

Landsborough Park ’n Ride Construction

Construction of the new park 'n' ride facility at Landsborough will take place between August 2022 and mid-2023.

These works form part of early works for the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade (B2N) project. This new park 'n' ride facility will provide around 300 additional parking spaces on the eastern side of Landsborough station, reducing the need for people to drive across the level crossing to park.

The works will involve some localised traffic impacts, including reduced speeds and temporary lane closures on Dyer Street during construction.

Additionally, the footpath connecting the train station to Caloundra Street on the eastern side of the station will be temporarily relocated during construction. Signage and fencing will direct pedestrians to the temporary path, which will be suitable for users of wheelchairs and other mobility devices.

“Traffic and Parking in Lawyer Street, Maleny”

Since the opening of the Service Station in Bunya Street, Maleny opposite the Maleny State School the traffic flow has increased significantly.

The school has also caused a heavy increase in the number of vehicles parking in Lawyer Street. These two matters when taken together and then combined with the two way flow of traffic and the narrowness and no guttering on one side of Lawyer Street has created a dangerous situation with traffic flow in Lawyer Street.

On a regular basis in the area traffic flow is constricted. Prior to and after the close of the primary school there are students running out from between parked vehicles onto the roadway and it is only a matter of time before one of these children is hit by a passing car. Time for something to be done to alleviate the problem.

Need a Roadworthy Certificate?

All vehicles (including trucks, motorbikes and trailers) must have a Safety or Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) if being sold, registered for the first time or being re-registered in Queensland. Don’t get scammed Sunshine Coast

The recent news that OPTUS Phones has been hacked and the personal data of Aussie Optus users has been exposed to hackers.

Optus says the stolen data includes names, email addresses, postal addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and for a portion of the affected customers, identification numbers including passport numbers, driver's licence numbers and Medicare numbers.

Prior to this the number of online scams that members of the public are exposed to was already increasing daily. The type of information taken in this instance allows for the stealing of a person’s identity thus allowing for many different types of legal action, such as property transfers, bank accounts being transferred just to name a couple - all without the actual person’s knowledge.

Your personal information is private and should not be given to anyone you're not expecting a call, email, or text from.

In view of this breach Scamwatch is urgently warning Australians to be on the lookout for increased scam activity following the recent Optus data breach and to take steps to protect themselves.

Police NewS - “Bitumen scam alert”

Sunshine Coast Police are warning residents to be mindful of people going door-to-door offering bitumen services at reduced prices.

In some cases the scammers are leaving business cards and supplying quotations by email, requiring a signature prior to work being commenced.

Police understand that these scammers have recently been active in the Sunshine Coast hinterland areas. The scammers present in high vis workwear, wearing protective boots and travel in hire vehicles.

It has been reported that these scammers have English accents and often tell victims that they have left over bitumen from another job and that their boss has instructed them to sell it off at a discounted price, to get rid of it quickly.

The jobs are often completed in record time, however the materials used are of very low quality and the ground is not prepared properly.

This adds up to be a considerable cost to the victim as the substandard material has to be removed before corrective work can be conducted.

If payment has not been made upfront, the scammers may become aggressive when the finished job is questioned, demanding immediate payment before leaving without rectifying the job.

If you think you have seen or have had contact from these trades persons, police recommend you contact the Office of Fair Trade on 13QGOV (13 74 68) via their web site at:

If you want to live in a country that builds things you have to buy things that your country builds!

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

According to the Queensland Health Minister The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) provides timely and quality emergency and non-emergency services to meet the needs of the community. Can we really believe this?

Over the past couple of years the Queensland Health Department has come under heavy pressure about the operating conditions of Queensland’s hospitals. Hospitals throughout the state have all come under pressure and the State Government appears unable to do anything to tackle the problems.

The hospitals are suffering from all sides with insufficient beds, insufficient medical and technical staff such as doctors, nurses and medical technicians, even though there has been an ever burgeoning public service bureaucracy that ensures that there is an ever increasing amount of paperwork to be completed.

The pressure on hospitals has caused problems within the Queensland Ambulance Service as ambulance crews are forced to wait at hospitals with patients because they cannot access doctors, nurses or hospital beds for their patients. This in turn is causing problems for the Ambulance Service as they then do not have ambulance crews to send to newly registered patients.

Many of these patients are waiting hours for ambulance service, many of the patients have a serious condition.

Patients are dying before ambulance help arrives. There have also been reports that fire crews are being sent to some of the more urgent cases instead of ambulance crews to assist.

Whilst the state government has regularly blamed the covid pandemic as the cause of the problems that is not entirely accurate. The pandemic has certainly made the situation worse, but the problem was evident prior to the con id pandemic.

No longer is it going to be enough to put bandaids on the problems as those problems will only worsen with time and the ever increasing population. The system needs a whole of system overhaul and urgently. Professional staff have started to leave their profession because they are under such stress that they are “burning out” and this in itself will cause the problems already being faced to worsen.

Any overview of the Health Department hospitals must look at replacing some of the services at rural hospitals that have been taken away over the past few years.

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t”

Truthful tells that a a person he had met on a holiday to the USA a few years age came to Maleny to stay with Truthful, His name was, Randy and he was a Texan farmer.

Truthful introduces his to Glen, an Aussie farmer and they get talking. Randy goes out to the Darling Downs with Glen where the Aussie shows off his big wheat field. The Texan says, 'Oh yeah, we have wheat fields that are at least twice as large.'

Then they walk around the wheat farm a little, and then Glen shows off his herd of cattle. Randy immediately says, 'We have longhorns that are at least twice as large as your cows.'

The conversation has, meanwhile, almost died when the Texan sees a herd of kangaroos hopping through the field and so he asks, 'And what are those?'

'Glen', the Aussie replies with an incredulous look, 'Don't you have any grasshoppers in Texas.’

Randy looks in dismay.

Remember When?

In 1854, a Scottish born Australian James Harrison created a commercial ice-making machine in Geelong, which he then expanded to create a vapour-compression refrigeration system. Harrison’s method of refrigeration is still the basic principle used by fridges today

The first Australian domestic mass produced refrigerator was called the Ice-OElectric, and was introduced in 1926. It was produced by the Coldstream company of South Australia.

Selling or buying a property!

Buying residential property in Qld?

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

Buying a residential property is a major financial transaction for most people. So, it’s vital you seek the advice of your solicitor before you sign any contract.

With increased numbers of residential properties changing hands in Queensland and a recently revised standard residential contract we thought this was a great time to review a few residential contract basics.

Over the next few weeks, we will review the fundamental issues in residential conveyancing for buyers and sellers of houses, units, and town houses.

Part 5 Buying a house

A significant part of the work done by a solicitor when you are buying a house is to review every aspect of the property. To do this your solicitor will:

• check the title and plan of the land for easements, caveats, and any other encumbrances;

• conduct all the other usual searches your solicitor recommends for your particular purchase;

• inform you if these searches find any issues that affect the property you’re purchasing;

• calculate adjustments to the purchase price

required under the contract;

• arrange for your contract to be stamped and assist you in complying with Australian Taxation Office and State Government requirements; and

• prepare all documents required and attend settlement to ensure you obtain good title to the property.

Should you have any ques/ons please contact our office on 07 5494 3511 Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 17:00 AEST.

Take care everyone!

At about 11pm on 12 October 2002 three bombs were detonated by the terrorist organisation Jemaah Islamiyahin in Bali killing 202 people, 88 of whom were Australian, and wounded hundreds more. Bombs, including a 1000kg bomb were detonated at two popular and busy nightspots – the Sari Club and Paddy’s Bar then all hell broke loose. Another exploded in front of the American consulate.

Out of the destruction of the bombings came many stories of ordinary people making extraordinary efforts to help those affected, even though they themselves may have been injured.

In this incident terrorists took many lives but they failed in their mission.

The Bali bombings have changed forever the way governments around the world approach national security. the Australian Federal Police have been on a continuous path of learning and attempting to keep on top of international terrorist organisations.

October 12 2002 was also a day of great heroism. Of selfless acts of courage. Of remarkable emergency response. What was a terrible day of shared grief for Indonesia and Australia became a day of great shared resolve.

At the time of this incident Bali was a popular holiday destination for Australians. This attack represent the single largest loss of Australian life at the time due to an act of terror. This is another one of those incidents where the average Aussie knows where they were when they first heard the news, such as the importance of this incident on Australian life.

Australia has been affected very deeply but the Australian spirit has not been broken.

Following the bombing the Australian Federal Police needed to evolve overnight, forming critical alliances with police jurisdictions around the country and most importantly, with the Indonesian National Police.

From this tragic event did come a small positive. For many of the victims suffering life-threatening injuries, urgent treatment was critical. That meant getting those with critical injuries back to Australian Medical services. The Royal Australian Air Force delivered a stream of patients back to Australian hospitals. Health staff worked to stabilise the wounded and repatriate them back to their home states for further treatment.

This incident subsequently prompted the establishment of a world-leading National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre. It is ready to be dispatched to major incidents such as cyclones, floods or tsunamis etc. especially in the Asia -Pacific area.

Professor Fiona Wood, head of the Burns Service of Western Australia oversaw the treatment of more people in the aftermath of the Bali bombings than any other person in Australia. She treated 28 patients using her innovative technique known as "spray-on skin".

Her ongoing research had created a spray-on skin that was still in research mode. This treatment subsequently made her a household name. Two decades on, Professor Fiona Wood is still exploring revolutionary burns treatments – including the role of the mind in treatment.

There are now a multitude of new burns technologies –including intelligent surgical tools, 3-D skin printers and scarless healing cream. These new techniques are available to treat burns inflicted by a number of accidental incidents, such as house fires and traffic accidents.

Today, many of those injured on that night have lived with horrific injuries and will do so for the rest of their lives.

The site of the Bali bombing today remains a vacant lot with decisions about what to do with it appearing too hard to make.

In spite of this bombing, Indonesia, and Bali in particular still remains a popular holiday destination for many Australians

To attempt to ensure that this type of incident never occurs again in the future, as a community we need to maintain focus and avoid becoming complacent.

The Internet is one of the greatest risks we have in relation to terrorism at the moment as it allows easy communications between possible terrorists or terrorist groups. It also allows someone to be radicalised in the confines of their own bedroom.

Terrorists are always thinking about what they are going to do in the future. As a result, law enforcement bodies need to maintain counter terrorism efforts to keep Australians safe where ever they travel.

Convicted Bali bomb maker Umar Patek was jailed in 2012, but is now awaiting parole.

Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets? We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

Since the middle of the 1970’s the big four banks have steadily been changing the banking landscape and gradually closing regional town banks.

Today the Federal Government has no ownership of the Commonwealth Bank and banking is no longer governed “for the people, but for profit to the bank”.

The Commonwealth Bank was originally “The People’s Bank” and was founded in 1911 by the Federal Australian Government.

It commenced operations in 1912, empowered to conduct both savings and general banking business.

Over the next 85 years it served the people of Australia well, both in the cities and in regional Australia. Managers of regional branches had a big input into the day to day running of their branch and as a result they were able to assist community members to a greater extent than managers can today.

During the period that the “big banks” serviced regional Australia their staff played a major part, not only in the business scene of those towns, but the social aspects of the towns. Closure of regional banks had other detrimental effects on regional towns apart from no banking facilities.

Cash management is most likely the biggest issue a town faces when it loses its last bank.

Until the early 1960’s the Commonwealth Bank even opened on Saturday mornings to give access to people who worked during the normal working week. The closure on Saturday mornings was closely followed with an ever increasing number of part-time staff replacing permanent staff.

In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s computers started to change the way internal processes, telling facilities and routine operations were conducted.

1975 saw changes that would set the scene for a new banking landscape. Economically, the country was in disarray with inflation and unemployment at post-war highs. As a result banks had to moderate lending in a bid to rein in the effect this was having on the Australian dollar. This is a similar situation that we see today.

Autobank or ATM’s were introduced in 1981. EFTPOS (Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale) commenced in 1984 and electronic home and office banking became available in 1985.

In the mid 1980’s the banking industry was deregulated.

These few incidents were most likely the real beginning of the bulk closure of regional branches.

In 1990 Australia went into “the Keating depression” and this gave the banks enough of an excuse to rationalise their services, keeping only the most profitable services.

In 1991 the Commonwealth Bank was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange and finally 1996 it was fully privatised.

This was a major step in ensuring that regional bank branches of all of the four major banks were closed at a faster growing rate

At the present time the ANZ Banking Corporation is in the process of purchasing the Suncorp Bank. The Suncorp Bank originally was owned by the Queensland Government through Suncorp Insurance. Suncorp purchased the Metway Bank in 2002 thus reducing the number of smaller banks that were servicing regional Australia.

The ANZ - Suncorp transaction follows the precedent of the purchase of BankWest of Western Australia by the Commonwealth Bank.

Today, many regional towns have no banking facilities at all. Even Bank ATM machines, the last semblance of any bank presence are being withdrawn.

When questioned about the removal of ATM machines the

banking industry points towards the lessening need for them because of the introduction of “internet banking”. What they simply skip over is the fact that rural Australia still suffers from very poor internet reception thus rendering internet banking less reliable. On top of these service reductions another strategy being used by some banks including Commonwealth is to reduce the opening hours of remaining country branches to 9.30a.m. to 1.30p.m. These changes have a huge knock-on effect for everyone in that town and has the potential to make the liveability in some regional towns less favourable.

With the major banks leaving regional towns, local businesses are left to their own devices when trying to sort out their banking problems.

Have you ever tried to contact one of the major banks either via their web site or by telephone.

and her friends. All records initially were kept on paper and it was staffed by volunteers. It had a real community feel from day one. At the end the Maleny Credit Union had over 3,100 Members and total assets of $56 million.

Today, it has been taken over by the Queensland Country Bank. In deciding to have the Queensland Country Bank take over the Maleny Credit Union, the committee felt that QCB is large enough to keep up to date with regulatory and technology costs, but still small enough to have a commitment to doing what is best for their members and their communities.

Original Queensland 5 pound sterling bank note - prior 1859

Queensland Country Bank is a member-owned organisation with a 50-year history of helping regional Queenslanders achieve their financial goals.

Hours can be spent “on hold” on the telephone after working through a long list of menu items and pushing phone buttons. Then, before getting onto the connection that you need being cut off. The wasted time costs small businesses money, mostly that they cannot afford. Web sites do not allow connection, only offer a banking app that should be used. This is OK as long as there is mobile phone connection, which is often very problematic in rural areas.

The banking industry is heavily pressing the point that increasing digitisation of business functions has led to a lessening need for cheques. The Department of Treasury is currently reviewing the mandatory use of cheques, paper signatures and physical records with a view to eliminating their use. It is only a matter of a short time and cheques will no longer be legal tender in Australia.

Whilst Maleny and District has not been immune from the closure of the “big” banks after the withdrawal of both the ANZ Bank and the Suncorp Bank they have been lucky due to the fact that The Maleny District Community Credit Union and the privately owned Bank of Queensland.

The Maleny District Credit Union was formed in 1984 by a community committee headed by Jill Jordan

This race to shut branches has to stop and it's time the Federal Government imposed a minimum service standard on the banks to make sure customers, especially older customers who are not particularly literate with digital technology are protected.

Especially in regional Australia the closure of local banks could cripple the economies of many towns as banking services are lost thus limiting the ability of local businesses being able to operate easily.

Having first swallowed many smaller banks and local credit unions, then closing branches, it would appear that the big banks quite plainly don’t care about forcing inconvenience on regional customers.

As the “Big Four” banks continue the trend of closing branches across the state, Queensland Country Bank has opened a new office in Maroochydore further cementing Queensland Country Bank’s commitment to existing and new members across the Sunshine Coast. The bank also has a mobile lender based in Maroochydore thus allowing the bank to better service existing and new Members.

The Queensland Country Bank has stated that it is not. going anywhere and will be in Maleny well into the future and has no plans to close. The Bank of Queensland has also showed strong support for the

Maleny District. The Bank of Queensland has been doing banking business in Queensland since 1874.

The Bank of Queensland, Maleny Branch is about building real relationships, and understanding their customer's needs. Whether it's business banking, everyday accounts or low rate home loans, the Bank of Queensland team can help with all your banking solutions.

Unlike many other country and regional towns who have no banking services at all because of the withdrawal of the big 4 banks, at least members of the Maleny and District have some banking services available to them and their businesses.

During a time of uncertainty, with a pandemic, significant weather events, and growing housing and health crises, this reduction adds insult to injury to regional Australians who are already facing

enough issues based on where they lives.

Banks need to have a presence in regional communities so that they can understand the situation in those regional areas.

We are available to discuss your situation 7 days a week.

There is a lot of talk nationally at the moment regarding the persistent rental shortage, a factor that is also very acute in southeast Queensland.

Given high demand from tenants for rental properties, there has been a considerable strengthening in rental yields on investment properties. Even though interest rates have increased in the past 6 months, we are seeing that many investment properties are still positively geared as a result of higher rents.

If you have significant equity in your home and a reasonable level of income, an investment property purchase is likely to be quite possible for you. In looking at the borrowing calculations, we are able to use the expected rental income for the property that you are buying, which makes the loan servicing a lot easier than you might have thought.

We would be pleased to discuss with you how this might work and run some calculations for you around interest rates and repayments.

Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top”

A bit about the plane on the trailer

A few people have ask me about the plane on top of my trailer.

So, to sum up. My plane is a Beechcraft Muskateer, made in America back in 1963, it was used as a trainer aircraft in Australia until 2012 in Victoria until it had a hard landing that wrote it off. ,The owners were wrecking it out and I saw it on Marketplace for $400. Given that I’m doing my fundraising lap for the Royal Flying Doctor, I thought gee wizz wouldn’t that look good on top of my trailer painted up as a Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia aircraft.

So we went and picked it up with a truck and the rest as they say is history. We painted it up as an RFDS aircraft with the new “rego” VH-RFDS”. We kept the original rego stickers VH-DFC for authenticity.

So that’s the story of how I got the plane, which also serves as my bedroom. (plus I’m the only double decker caravan on the road.) You can help me by donating to one of my charities: https://www.mycause.com.au/p/243337/the-travellingjackaroo
