Up Front

As I begin my time as Malvern’s 15th Head of School, this summer gives me and my colleagues time to plan and prepare for the upcoming school year. Even without the presence of our students, the campus remains active with a variety of construction projects - including athletic facility updates and the renovation of Tolentine Hall. Warren Avenue will have a new look when students arrive in late August. There will be new faces on campus - as well as familiar faces in new roles when we return to campus. A few that I would like to announce include: ark Hanichak - Mark has joined the Development Department as the Senior M Associate Director of Development. Mark previously served as a consultant for our Development Team. We are excited to have him return in a full-time capacity. F r. Donald Reilly - I am thrilled that Fr. Reilly will remain part of the Malvern Community. In his new role as Senior Advisor, Mission & Philanthropy, Fr. Reilly will assist the Office of Development with major giving. He will also assist the Mission and Ministry Team with weekly Mass. F r. Bill Gabriel - Prior to his ordination, Fr. Bill Gabriel spent a year on Malvern’s campus in 2018 as a Theology teacher. He was ordained in 2021 and will return to Malvern as an Upper School Theology teacher this year. Retaining Fr. Reilly and the addition of Fr. Gabriel, allows Malvern Prep to have a strong Augustinian presence on campus. Their presence is essential to creating young men with strong character who lead with humility and heart. I am also happy to announce the addition of the St. Ambrose Team. The St. Ambrose Team will be led by Mr. Ron Algeo ‘87 P‘15, Associate Head of School, and will represent all areas of the student life experience - academics, activities, athletics, and inclusivity. I invite you to learn more about this team on page 12. I am grateful to the leadership of Fr. Reilly and want to thank him for leaving the school in a stronger position than it was five years ago. I plan to continue that trajectory of success which makes Malvern a premiere institution for educating young men in the Philadelphia area. Again, thank you for your good wishes as I begin this new chapter. Enjoy the remaining days of summer and may God continue to bless the Malvern Community. Best,

The Province Installs a New Prior Provincial Congratulations to Fr. Robert P. Hagan, O.S.A., who was installed on June 13, 2022, as the new Prior Provincial of the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova! Fr. Rob previously served as Villanova University’s Senior Associate Athletic Director and team chaplain for the Villanova football and men’s basketball programs. He was ordained to the priesthood in September 2003 and is a graduate of Villanova University. The installation Mass took place at the St. Thomas of Villanova Church on Villanova’s campus. This celebratory occasion marked the beginning of Fr. Rob’s first four-year term as the province’s 41st provincial. Over 500 people attended the Mass, with 300+ joining us virtually via livestream. In attendance were our Augustinian family from around the world, the Provincial staff, our invaluable donors, and all those associated with the Province. In his address to the church Fr. Rob proclaimed that, “We come here during this Mass of the Holy Spirit in thanksgiving for all the Augustinians who’ve taken steps all along the way. Not necessarily with the clearest roadmap, but with the Holy Spirit, the helper, the advocate, the comforter, the inspirer. We are part of a team!” Let us keep the new Prior Provincial and the Province in prayer as Fr. Rob steps up to serve the Province in this vital role! If you would like to watch Fr. Rob’s address or view images from the Installation, visit our website at www.augustinian.org.

This group will work closely with each other, their colleagues, and our students. “Our students have said to us that the thing they value most is their connections with peers, friends, faculty, and staff. The St. Ambrose Team will allow us to make these connections for students in a really authentic way,” said Algeo. He continued, “This team will really help to mentor other leaders just as St. Ambrose was a friend, mentor, and leader to St. Augustine.”

Why St. Ambrose? St. Ambrose was the bishop of Milan in the early 4th century and is remembered as the teacher who converted and baptized Malvern’s Patron Saint, St. Augustine. Just as St. Ambrose inspired St. Augustine to become a leader of the Church, the St. Ambrose Team hopes to draw out the natural leadership ability in all of our students through character development, inclusion in activities and athletics, counseling, and academic endeavors.

Over 130 Malvern Juniors and Seniors completed seven Christian Service trips this year to various cities across the United States, including Flagstaff, AZ, New Orleans, LA, and Talcott, WV. These trips marked the first time students have traveled for Christian Service since the start of the pandemic. Students spent time preparing meals at a Food Bank in Flagstaff, volunteering with the Louisiana Coastline Project, working on a sustainable farm at Bethlehem Farm, helping the surrounding communities through a variety of projects around town, and so much more. When they were not performing service projects, they were able to explore their beautiful surroundings and delve into the history of the community. The students documented their adventures via blog posts each day. These posts included reflections on their service experience, commentary, and photos of their downtime experiences and activities. Juan Carlos Catania ‘23 shared, “Today was one of the most eye-opening days I’ve ever had. Addressing the parents, Traynor shared, “Today is a day of emotions; we’re proud, sad, we’re excited, we’re nervous. Parents, please do not think of this as the end of your relationship with Malvern - once a Friar, always a Friar.” Last, speaking to the class of 2022, Traynor shared, “In the years to come remember that Malvern has already instilled in you the foundation of a true leader.” He continued, “Your journey here at Malvern has reinforced the values of Truth, Unity, and Love and taught you the importance of recognizing these values in your life.” mp

Friar Athletes Score with Offers to Play at the Collegiate Level The average number of students nationwide that go on from high school to play a sport at Division I, II, or III college is just over 7%. For Malvern Prep, the number is 35% - 5 times the national average. To be a student-athlete requires a great deal of commitment, organization, and talent - both on the field and off. Our student-athletes do not get admitted to these top academic schools on athletic talent alone. They must demonstrate their hard work and dedication both in the classroom and on the playing fields.
