Chamber Program Makes an Impact Responding to Member Needs and Feedback - We Need You!

Starting this month, the Chamber’s Big Bank Theory program will reach high school seniors with a hands-on activity designed to grow their financial literacy skills. We will visit all seven public high schools as well as Team Success charter school. This annual program is a priorty for our Education & Workforce Partnership Committee.

We need hundreds of volunteers to help the students with the activity. It is fun, rewarding, and easy (we promise!) The Big Bank Theory was developed more than 10 years ago by the Chamber as a direct result of member feedback that stressed the need for more financial literacy skills in the workforce. Check out page 8 for more information and consider signing up ASAP.

Chamber member volunteers staff booths that walk students through decisions related to securing housing, transportation, insurance, clothing, groceries, and more - all while attempting to stay within their assigned monthly budget. It's like "The Game of Life", but recreated in the school gym and the monthly budgets the students are assigned are aligned with Florida job and wage data.

The Chamber's Legislative Committee How We Advocate for Your Business During the Legislative Session

The Legislative Committee Reconvenes

Step 1

The Chamber’s Legislative Committee meets in the Fall each year in preparation for the annual Florida legislative session. This year, the Committee began meeting in September to prepare for the January 2024 start of session. The Committee meets weekly to develop a platform of state and federal priorities for the Chamber's Board consideration.

Other Committees Weigh In

The Chamber has multiple committees including Downtown Redevelopment, Education & Workforce Partnerships, Healthcare, Natural Resources, and Transportation that hone in on specific topics throughout the year. These committees offer valuable insight on issues that impact businesses and our community, policies that influence economic growth, and ideas that foster the potential of our members to expand and grow their businesses.

Legislative Priorities Are Established

The Legislative Committee uses the information shared from many sources to develop the draft State and Federal Business Agenda to present to the Chamber’s Board of Directors for approval. This Agenda establishes the Chamber’s priorities for the upcoming legislative session.

Pancakes & Politics

Before the legislative session begins, the Chamber hosts the annual Pancakes & Politics event. This is an opportunity to enjoy a delicious breakfast while hearing members of our local legislative delegation discuss their priorities for the upcoming legislative session, the state budget, and address your questions.

Lobbying in Tallahassee

Chamber Board, staff, and Legislative Committee members take an annual lobbying trip to Tallahassee to discuss the Chamber’s legislative priorities with elected officials and key agency leaders. After the trip, the Chamber’s Legislative Committee continues to monitor the legislative session and keep Chamber members informed when the Chamber’s prioritized legislation is considered.

Empowering Individuals to Finish Their Degrees and Reclaim Their Dreams

In today's fast-paced world, pursuing higher education can often seem like an unattainable dream for many. Life's responsibilities, financial constraints, and unforeseen circumstances can interrupt academic journeys, leaving individuals with unfulfilled aspirations. It’s for these reasons REACH Manatee has collaborated with PLANit Sarasota and Complete Tampabay to partner with a pilot project at State College of Florida. The goal, to bring back those students who were unable to complete their degree.

Over the last 5 years, 22,664 individuals have left SCF without completing their degrees. Could your employees be among these former SCF students who are close to attaining their credential or degree?

Now there is hope for those who wish to return to school. Matt Smith, Completion Coach from Complete Tampabay has begun

contacting 7,800 individuals offering one-on-one coaching to help navigate the process of coming back to fulfill their dreams.

When finances stand in the way, they’ll have access to the Student Assistance Fund to help cover some costs. This would not be possible without the generous support of the Manatee Community Foundation and other supporting foundations and area organizations. If you are interested in finding out more about returning to State College of Florida, contact Matt Smith at MSmith@CFTampabay.org.

provides philanthropic support to Tidewell Hospice and the not-for-profit Empath Health affiliate organizations in Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, DeSoto, Lee, and Collier Counties. Tidewell’s 40-year legacy has been substantially supported each year by donors.

The Tidewell Family Grief Center provides everyone access to holistic grief support for individuals, families, and the community. Clients have access to opportunities to meet their own grief needs, whether through one-on-one sessions, groups, art therapy, meditation, or alternative therapies. One example is Tidewell’s Blue Butterfly program, an evidence-based grief program for children ages 5-18 who have experienced the loss of a parent, sibling, or other significant person in their lives. For more information, or to donate to Tidewell Foundation, call 941-599-1912. Charitable contributions to Tidewell Foundation sustain and grow these and other critically important programs and services.
