CATT KYRIACOU

Hello March Thank goodness for leaving winter behind and embracing a new season filled with warmth, optimism and endless sunshine! Life is slowly coming out of hibernation, everyone I’ve been talking to is excited for the forthcoming season, let the party island come to life! As one of Europe’s top holiday hotspots, I’ve spoken to one of the most highly respected club DJs, DJ Coxy as he prepares for the clubs to open. Personally, I can’t wait either. I recently got a new tattoo, it isn’t until my late 40s that I discovered my love of ink.

Having grown up in a stuffy, judgemental environment where tattoos were looked down upon, I can’t tell you how liberating and awesome it was to get one on my arm. I spotted the mural of a tiger on the clubbing strip and I absolutely love it, it represents my love of dancing, freedom and of course a tiger is fierce and not to be messed with. A bit like me. Huge thanks to Marc at Blood Brothers for his awesome artistic talent. Talking of which, Cyprus is bursting with fabulous artists. I met up with jewellery designer Catt Kyriacou. Read her inspirational story inside.

So many wonderful people living their best lives on this beautiful island I am proud to call home. And of course that’s what life’s all about isn’t it, to be happy and love your lifestyle! Enjoy,

Meet Catt Kyriacou, owner of Soul Art and Jewellery by Katka

O

riginally from Liverpool, Catt planned to travel the world after graduating from university. Her first stop was Cyprus and she fell in love with the island, with all its natural beauty, stories of Aphrodite and the churches.

“I loved the churches,” she enthused. She was later baptised and settled on the outskirts Ayia Napa. Catt said “I took the short cut to where I was

meant to be! Cyprus has a special light and beauty and I felt spiritually connected to this country, like I was supposed to be here. It’s a healing place.” Before she had her family, she was painting murals and nightclub walls, then stayed at home with her two young daughter and painted canvases, before turning her talents to making bespoke jewellery, setting sea shells in beautifully decorated copper wiring.

6

She said, “ I was walking along the beach one day with a special friend who picked up a shell and gave it to me. I’d been having a difficult time and I am a sentimental soul so as an artist I saw something in the shell, it was very significant. I put it in my purse and it was the first shell I wrapped in

copper, just to preserve and remember it’s significance and that special day. Later it gave me the idea to make shell jewellery and the business grew from there.” “I love wire wrapping. I did 3D design at university (wood, metal, ceramics and glass) and I specialised in metal work later working with wire. My tutor at the time said he hadn’t seen wire used in this way before! I created mainly wire clocks and sculptures. They were exhibited in the UK for two years but I stopped whilst painting in Cyprus. When Covid started in March and we were locked down I said a prayer one night for inspiration and asked to

be shown a way forward. The next day I woke up with the idea to make jewellery and I wrapped MY shell after that. I spent two years in lockdown making jewellery, learning new techniques and experimenting with designs, preparing to launchon aninternational stage. My pieces sell on average for 200 euros a piece and are all unique, no two designs are the same.” Catt added, “I love working in copper, it’s a beautiful and versatile metal and is a big part of cypriot history. In fan the Greek name for the island is “Kupros” which is derived from the word for copper.”

THE DOGGY BEACH

DID YOU KNOW THERE’S A BEACH THAT CAN BE ENJOYED BY BOTH DOGS AND THEIR OWNERS?

T

he Doggy Beach is the last beach in Kapparis is located just before the border and was designated by Paralimni municipality in 2016 after dog owners lobbied them for a beach to take their four legged friends. As temperatures rise in summer, it’s perfect for dogs to cool down in the sea and there are two bins for dog waste and responsible owners respect this. If you’re lucky you may even spot dolphins swimming. Since the beach was declared as designated for dogs, the word has spread very quickly amongst the locals and the beach has been filled with dogs and their owners

14

ever since. And now every summer residents hold a Beach Party for Dogs in Cyprus where up to 100 dogs have been seen jumping the waves! As there are no designated park areas for dogs in Cyprus this has been recognised as the best spot in the country to take your dog. Resident Margo Flouri says, “We have beautiful beaches and this part of Cyprus has the best seasides. The Doggy Beach is like a river that flows in the sea and is enjoyed by families, I wouldn’t change it

for the world.” Katie Kryiakoudi added, “I’m really happy it exists and allows me to spend quality time with my dog at the beach. It is great to meet other animal lovers there . People really appreciate it and respect it. I am lucky to be living close to it."

LIFESTYLE

NOTES AND REFLECTIONS OF A WOMAN CREATING HER BEST LIFE Stefania Bongiovanni Everybody is a mirror. What you see in me is also what you see in yourself. And viceversa, what I love or hate in you is what I love or hate in myself. At first this sounded weird or nonsense to me, but when I started analysing the people I met and why I immediately liked or disliked them... Well, it was very enlightening! Yes, it takes a lot of selflove and self-esteem to match the good and beautiful we see in others with the splendour that lies in us. And it takes even more courage and honesty to admit to ourselves that we share some flaws and weaknesses with that person that we really find insufferable. Because in both cases we may feel forced to take action by i) really appreciating ourselves and ii) changing what prevents us from becoming the best

16

version of ourselves. So let’s start with the small steps: when someone compliments you, believe them! Because they see in you something that they like in themselves, too, even if they’re not completely aware of it. And chances are that you have found a like-minded person. We are each other’s mirror, do you remember? This is why your perception of me is a reflection of you. And while beautiful souls always look for the good in others, toxic people choose to look for the negative aspects and to constantly live their life on victim mode. But the good news is that, next time that you find out that someone is talking mean behind your back or has left a negative comment under one of your posts, you will know that the problem does not lie in you.

Haters gonna hate and hurt people hurt people, and this unfortunately will be a fixed point in our life. But what they probably ignore is that they are giving you a clear sign that you’ve been doing a good job. So don’t give up, darling, and keep on being an example to follow. Thank the haters and let them walk out of your life, praying for them to find one day the peace in their hurt hearts. Who am I? I’m an Italian living in Cyprus and loving it crazily. My name is Stefania Bongiovanni, some of you will know me as the founder of The Girlfriends’ Circle, but as well as the woman who believes in #sisterhood and in #womensupportwomen.

DAY OUT

IN NICOSIA THERE’S A museum that brings a touch of whimsical delight to a street just outside the city’s grim demilitarized zone. Opened in February 2017, the Fairy Tale Museum is the perfect place to explore the magical world of fairy tales. Located in a renovated Grade II listed building, the museum aims to preserve and promote fairy stories, legends, myths, and traditions from Cyprus, Greece, and other places around the world. As soon as you walk into the oversized library, you can immediately begin to explore fairy tales via the

museum’s interactive exhibits, rare books, and artwork. Those looking to test their own imaginative powers can create and perform the stories in the dress-up room. Hidden doors throughout the museum lead to secret rooms that highlight objects from some of the most treasured tales—Aladdin, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Cinderella— while age-specific texts delight children and adults alike. People are encouraged to open drawers, turn gears, and tinker with other gadgets to bring the information to life. The “magic library” has books

stretching over nine feet high, all dedicated to fairy tale writers and folk researchers. The location of this fantasy-filled museum is situated right near the United Nations Buffer Zone. The museum also plans to organise various storytelling events, themed exhibitions, performances based on fairy tales and educational programmes geared towards children and the whole family. 32 Granikou St, Old Nicosia. Entrance: €5 and €3 for school groups. Tel: (+357) 22-376522

EASE ANXIETY We live in a world with everything available to us instantly, we have entertainment 24/7 and whatever information we need at our fingertips. Everything we could ever want is right in front of us yet anxiety is at all time high. What triggers it?

I

t is usually the build up pf smaller stressful life situations, like a relationship break up, moving house, ongoing financial struggles or an impending big event. Anxiety can be caused by a variety of things: stress, genetics, brain chemistry, traumatic events, or environmental factors. Symptoms can be reduced with anti-anxiety medication. But even with medication, people may still experience some anxiety or even panic attacks. Here’re some ways to alleviate anxiety: 1. Exercise If you’re feeling stressed, moving your body on a consistent basis may help. Many other studies have shown that engaging in physical activity helps reduce stress levels and improve mood, while sedentary behavior may lead to increased stress,

poor mood, and sleep disturbances. If you’re currently inactive, start with gentle activities such as walking or biking. Choosing an activity that you enjoy may help increase your chances of sticking to it in the long term. 2. Follow a healthy diet Minimizing your intake of highly processed foods and drinks, eating more whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, beans, fish, nuts, and seeds can help ensure that your body is properly nourished. 3. Minimimise screen time Smartphones, computers, and tablets are an unavoidable part of everyday life for many people. While these devices are often necessary, using them too often may increase stress levels.A number of studies have linked

excessive smartphone use and “iPhone addiction” with increased levels of stress and mental health and sleep disorders. 4. Take supplements Several vitamins and minerals play an important role in your body’s stress response and mood regulation. As such, a deficiency in one or more nutrients may affect your mental health and ability to cope with stress. 5. Practice self care Taking time for yourself is essential in order to live a healthy life.It doesn’t have to be elaborate or complicated. It simply means tending to your well-being and happiness. •

6. Reduce your caffeine intake Caffeine is a chemical found in coffee, tea, chocolate, and energy drinks that stimulates your central nervous system. Consuming too much may worsen and increase feelings of anxiety. 7. Learn to say no Taking control over your personal life may help reduce stress and protect your mental health. One way to do this may be to say “no” more often. This is especially true if you find yourself taking on more than you can handle, because juggling many responsibilities may leave you feeling overwhelmed.Being selective about what you take on — and saying “no” to things Plus, creating boundaries — especially with people who add to your stress levels — is a healthy way to protect your wellbeing. This can be as simple as asking a friend or family member not to visit or canceling standing plans with a friend who tends to create drama.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (21 MARCH–19 APRIL)

This month will see expansion through philosophy, travel or education. It promotes the flow in your life so that things are easier than they have been in the past. You will find ways to express your unique identity in the outer world, preferably while promoting social justice. TAURUS (20 APRIL – 20 MAY) You will be preoccupied in issues ranging from the mundane study of the budget to important discussions with partners over the need for greater intimacy. You may be organising business issues related to an inheritance or your own legacy. You will back out of enviable professional commitments.

GEMINI (21 MAY – 20 JUNE)

This is a propitious time for you to begin new things, especially if they involve travel or communications. Give special attention to investments and other shared resources. Ease up on the energy output. Your physical body may feel sluggish and your primary focus should be on internal healing.

CANCER (21 JUNE – 22 JULY)

You will feel the need to mature and to solidify your identity, in a new or additional field of work. Changes have come into your life through relationships with those who have minds of their own and they will teach you to set boundaries and claim your independence in a relationship.

LEO (23 JULY – 22 AUGUST)

You might encounter a physical or emotional blockage that demands healing before you move forward. If you do not recognize your feelings, a situation may drop in from the sky that will remind you of

20

circumstances of the past. You will be prone to overreact.

VIRGO (23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER) A new vision

for your life will take its place as the month moves forward, but be patient. It will be your responsibility to maintain the opportunities you’ve been given. You will be adding new spirit to an ongoing relationship. Many possibilities for reaching people will develop.

LIBRA (23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER) This should be an

exciting month; something long in the making will show signs of fruition. There are still some loose ends that need to be tied up, though. You are setting and achieving goals and you must also learn compassion to manifest your best results.

SCORPIO (23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER) Positivity,

affirmations, being kind to yourself, celebrating your talents and successes – all of this will create fertile soil for your dreams to take root and grow. You will need to let go of any desire to have power over others and focus on developing your inner strength.

SAGITTARIUS (22 NOVEMBER -21 DECEMBER) A pervading

sense of ambivalence is creeping into your life just when you think it’s safe. You’ve been putting too much emphasis on some form of security: a relationship, job or lifestyle. It is holding you back as you’re overlooking an opportunity right in front of your eyes.

CAPRICORN (22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY) You should be inspired to achieve greater spiritual understanding by clearing your mind of past

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS MANISH KUMAT ARORA EMAIL: manish@ manishastrologer.com thoughts. Being true to yourself will bring about the happiness you seek. Progress will be made and stability is just around the corner! Take this inspirational energy and put it to good use.

AQUARIUS (20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY) Concentrate

on your strengths and abilities and let go of what you cannot complete or what you don’t possess. Start creating very specific financial plans and goals to get yourself there. It will help. Get your life on track and put more trust in your own thoughts and ideas.

PISCES (19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH) You are in the midst

of warmth, brightness, and beauty. Keep reaching for the skies, to stay connected with nature and grasp the full power of your capacity and set yourselves free from all restrictions. Work on selfcare, self-assessment and the choices you need to make in life.

BUSINESS

Secure Corporate and Domestic Storage in Cyprus

C

hange is bound to happen. Renovation, relocation, remodelling. All these rank as one of the most stressful life events. Your life and work are disrupted as you make adjustments and changes to your daily routine. Additionally, organising, packing and keeping track of your belongings is a hassle. Then, once you move, you have to figure out where to put all your items. Luckily, you can take away some of that stress by storing your possessions

22

at Peter Morton Removals storage facilities! At PMR, one of the core values is to make customers life as stress-free as possible. Renovation, Relocation and Remodelling, do not have to be stressful life events. Due to increased demand a few years ago, Peter Morton made a considerable investment and sourced a dedicated, massive storage facility on a 7,500 square meter site. Right now, it is ranked as the largest and safest storage facility in Cyprus. At PMR, the storage crates are made of wood and are 250 cubic ft each in size. The storage facilities are approved by BAR (British Association of Removers) and all crates are manufactured and imported from the UK. It’s easy to store items anywhere, but our warehouse is both convenient and protected. Considering

your belongings’ safety ahead of time will save you the stress of having to replace something later or potentially losing something irreplaceable, expensive or dear to your heart. Additionally, the warehouse itself and all goods that are in the store are fully insured! With the recent increase in Cyprus crime rates, storing valuable goods at home doesn’t seem like a safe option any longer. Unlike houses, storage facilities offer more security to stored items. At Peter Morton Removals, the whole facility is covered by a state-of-the-art security system monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Three freerunning guard dogs also patrol the premises. It is, therefore, wiser to store valuable items in a

storage unit rather than in the garage or basement of our houses. Peter Morton Removals domestic storage crates are all individually numbered. They are loaded on to purposebuilt vehicles and brought to your house, ready to be loaded by the PMR team. Upon loading of each crate, with a full inventory, the doors will be secured. On arrival of the PMR vehicle back at a secure warehouse, your numbered crate will be placed back in its specific row by a forklift. This means your goods are not handled anymore from when collected. The redelivery process works exactly the same but in

reverse. Every crate that arrives at the warehouse is logged on to the computer system. You can access your domestic storage crates at any time by appointment with the office.

of where they going and what conditions they will be stored in. We welcome potential customers to come and view our facility, so you can see for yourself and be confident in your decision to use us.

At PMR, we always suggest to our clients that they come and look at the storage facility. If you want to store your goods, you need to be very sure For more information, please visit their website www.petermortonremoval.com or give them a call on 26923588 - Paphos office or 25722180 - Limassol office.

HEARING

Hard time hearing people in face masks? Hearing aids can help Face masks have unequivocally been a good thing when it comes to helping prevent the spread of Covid-19. But they present challenges when trying to communicate with others. Especially if you or the person you’re communicating with has hearing loss. Face masks muffle speech and block important lip-reading cues. Both are key to understanding speech. Add in social distancing or group video chats — which have nothing to do with masks but plenty to do with speech audibility — and Covid has definitely made it a lot harder to hear what friends, family members, colleagues, doctors and dentists, and the clerk scanning your groceries are saying. Hearing aids make hearing easier It should be no surprise, though, that hearing aids offset these challenges and can help make it easier to hear people who are wearing face masks. By their very nature, hearing aids

with Economou Hearing

amplify sound which, in many cases, is all it takes to hear what face-mask wearers are saying.

and background noise into consideration — to deliver enhanced speech audibility on demand.

Evolv AI hearing aids can help even more

Not only is Edge Mode great for masks, it’s handy to have anytime you encounter a noisy or particularly challenging listening environment.

Starkey’s Evolv AI hearing aids have been engineered to go above and beyond simple sound amplification to specifically tackle the challenges created by face masks, social distancing and background noise. They include our proprietary Edge Mode technology — available in all Evolv AI hearing aids — which has been proven to be highly effective in resolving speech intelligibility issues caused by masks. How? By putting the power of artificial intelligence (AI) at your fingertips. Just a double tap of your hearing aids activates Edge Mode anytime you need it. Once activated, Edge Mode scans the acoustic environment you’re in, then instantly optimizes sound — taking masks, distance

Our new Mask Mode, too, was specifically designed to make people who are wearing masks easier to hear. Mask Mode is a custom memory in our Thrive app that offsets the loss of speech audibility due to face masks by boosting sound in the affected regions. Mask Mode is available on all Evolv AI hearing aids. To experience how far hearing aids have come and what they can do for you, simply call at 77772627 and book a free hearing appointment with one of our hearing healthcare professionals in your area who can test your hearing and consult with you about treatment options available.

NST WOMEN COMBATING VIOLENCE AGAI

Cyprus to crack down on domestic violence against women “The elimination of violence against women is an issue of high priority for the Republic of Cyprus,” said the President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou during a recent event in Nicosia. Demetriou was speaking at the event organised by the Irish Embassy on the occasion of St Brigid’s Day, during which Irish diplomatic missions celebrate women’s creativity, leadership and talent in Ireland and around the world, and had as its central theme the prevention and response to genderbased violence. Domestic violence remains one of the most widespread and largely unpunished violations of human rights in the world, while awareness on violence against women and genderbased crimes have further increased over the last two years with the Covid pandemic. Lockdowns caused an increase of domestic violence globally, a situation which is unfortunately reported in Cyprus too.

New laws have come into effect in Cyprus in the last 2 years including criminalising harassment and stalking, combatting sexism and online sexism, which is the first country in the Council of Europe to implement this law reform. Also a draft law

was introduced to the House with the purpose of introducing the crime of femicide, namely the intentional killing of women by a man of the basis of her gender to the criminal code. According to the provisions of the draft law, this crime will be punished with life imprisonment.

The Government of Cyprus signed the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention) in June 2015, but has not yet ratified it. The Istanbul Convention is the most far-reaching international treaty to tackle this serious violation of human rights.

How are women and girls protected? Women victims of domestic violence in Cyprus have legal access to protection measures including temporary protection orders restraining the suspect from contact with the victim, as well as restraining orders prohibiting perpetrators from entering or remaining in the marital home. Cyprus has transposed Directive 2012/29/EU establishing minimum standards on the rights, support and protection of victims of crime, implementing national legislation in April 2016 (19), which ensures that women victims of genderbased violence receive specialised support services. Public officers of the Ministries of Health, Education, Justice and Public Order (Police) and Labour and Social Insurance (Social Welfare Services) have a mandatory duty to report to the Attorney’s General’s Office any referrals where concerns, suspicions or evidence of family violence exist, including domestic violence. Additionally, any person who is aware of and omits to report a case of violence against a minor, or against a person with severe mental or psychological deficiencies, commits an offence (20).

What help is available in Cyprus?

The Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family runs free-of-charge, 24/7 accessible women’s shelters for victims of domestic violence (24).

Emergency Assistance Helpline (1440) Citizens’ Line (1460)

The Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family (SPAVO) runs the Centre for Emergency Assistance Helpline (1440). The helpline is free of charge and provides multidimensional support in Greek and English (21). During the years 2014—2015, 83.5 % of calls received by the national domestic violence helpline were from women and girls (22). The Police run a general victim’s helpline called Citizens’ Line (1460) that operates 24 hours a day and is free of charge (23). There are two women’s shelters for victims of domestic violence in Cyprus run by the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family (SPAVO). Both are accessible 24 hours a day and free of charge.

As the island reawakens ready for the new season, Lifestyle caught up with top DJ COXY

hen he isn’t playing in The Castle club or travelling to gigs around the world he is managing The Return Gym in Ayia Napa. When I met him I told him I couldn’t wait to start dancing again “You can dance now !” he said, “ You can dance in your house but it isn’t the same I know. Just put on your radio and listen to my set and you can have a little party with your mates.” Not quite the same level as club atmosphere, though, which is what we’re all eagerly anticipating. “Hopefully soon everything will open,” he said, “It’s going to be a busy season. I won’t believe until I see but when it does open it will be great. If it is it same as last year I will be happy,

let’s say April things open slowly, bars will start opening soon and then the clubs will carry on.” Coxy discovered his love of music from an early age. He said, “Since I was a young boy, my mum put music on to make me fall sleep, so I always loved music. As I grew up I wanted to learn how to play drums and over the years I didn’t have time as I love football and was always out playing. In the late 70s /80s we didn’t have computers so we we were out playing, we loved game. But at the same time I was collecting vinyls, My mum’s family were living in London and every time they came over I asked for vinyls and then started learning. I got some

mates from London playing in the square so I knew how to play but a friend of mine, Nick Power got me in the game and it grew from there. “I used to go all round the world before covid, but next month I am off to Holland and then onto Dubai and of course back in Cyprus.” Coxy feels an enormous pressure being a DJ. “It’s not just playing music, there’s a lot of research to be done. You have to be ahead of everyone

seen crying, saying they love this tune, i’s my fave tune blah blah, it’s very emotional, But sooner or later I’ll have to leave this getting old, cannot stay up all night anymore. “It scares me to leave, how it will affect me mentally, music brings people together , its like a family music is the best healer of all.”

else, djing is not an easy job, it is studying non stop and but know who you are and who you like to play to and bring people together. Holidaymakers come here to have a week of doing nothing, they leave everything back home, they leave all their problems behind and want a week of partying. In 26 years of being a dj the amount of people I have

“I have been playing electronic dance music all my life, I manage to maybe play a few tunes from top 40 but it is a special remix but you may know the tune from say,Madonna, but not know the remix, That’s what we try to do at the Castle Club and that’s what people remember. It’s all about making people feel good.”

The outstanding Blues band, BLUES CARGO returns to Cyprus with three quality shows lined up to BLUES us away! If you appreciate this genre of music, which originated in the deep American South with its melancholy, and feel-good vibes then make sure to add them to your diary because you will love this band! BLUES CARGO is a five-piece band from Athens who have been performing for over three decades and have a reputation which precedes them. Their first album, First Delivery, was released in 1993, followed by two more original albums, Delayed Delivery in 2009 and On Time in 2016. All three albums received excellent reviews and continue to do so. The band are

most prominent Blues bands in the country and their popularity goes further than Greece. Their Blues genuisity has enabled their music to stretch over to Europe and beyond. Their music has been labeled Chicago Blues and filled the gap in the Blues scene in Greece which opened doors to other local aspiring musicians of this genre. These Athenians have captured the feel of the Blues with their interesting lyrics and catchy tunes, and it is obvious to see, that they love the music they make and express their feelings and not just story telling lyrics. They are a tight band displaying a smooth and easy chemistry between them on stage and promise to deliver a fiery set of blues with hints of jazz and funk leaking into their sound. The crisp playing of the guitar solos and arrangements, the exceptional vocals, the powerful and mellow saxophone playing, and the absolute effective
