LTG's Greeting Hey Pandas! Are you excited for summer?! I know I am! You definitely deserve a nice long break, after all the hard work you’ve done this year. I hope the past couple of weeks went well for you. I know that it’s been pretty stressful, considering that since the last newsletter there’s been finals and APs! However, now that all the stress is mostly over (minus regents), I hope you can relax! Theres less than a month left of school, so make sure to remember Key Club over the summer! We do run year round, which means that there will still be some Key Club activities. Later in this newsletter, there will be some more ideas related to Key Club in the summer. Check these out if you’re staying in the city. Additionally, you can check out my weekly email updates to know what we’re up to! To the officers, remember to fill out your ERFs, MRFs, and FRFs! The paperwork chart for the ERFs and MRFs is at the end of the newsletter, and the FRFs just need to be filled out whenever you have a fundraiser. As always, if you ever need any help at all, feel free to message me! I will most likely respond within a few minutes :) Also, don't forget to sign up to attend DTC!! Yours in service, Mara Yella

Getting Back to Volunteering For the last few months, I hadn’t been able to go to any of the events my club was promoting. I was stuck in a loop of schoolwork and sleep. I felt incompetent and anxious from not knowing what kind of person I was when I worked. I thought I couldn't work and wouldn’t be able to get into the college I wanted. However, as I was going to school, I remembered I needed to get hours to graduate. So, I signed up to volunteer for the AIDS Walk on May 20th. I was alone when I reached the park since I arrived very early. I felt shy around others, but I kept pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Once I got into the work, my feelings eased and I felt comfortable in the environment. I was able to chat with the other volunteers outside of my Key Club. We were able to help set up, take food out, and man the stations of food. Getting back into Key Club and its events helped me realize that I wasn't incompetent and that I should be more confident with myself. I was able to bond with my fellow members and remember that they had my back. I know I will be able to grow and build my character as I go to more events and push myself out of comfort zone. Thank you Key Club for giving me these opportunities and letting me do things with my life! -Samiha Khan NEST+m

Signing up for AIDS Walk, I wasn't sure if I'd like it or not. I had attended last year but found there were way too many people crammed in such a tiny space. Because of this, I was tempted to not go and just donate before the event to show my support. As you can probably guess, I went anyway and I definitely made the right decision. Attending AIDS Walk this year was so much more rewarding than I had anticipated. When you go to any service event one of the best things you can do is talk to people affected by the cause that you're aiding. Interacting with the families of those that had lost their lives to the disease was such a special experience that I can't even believe I considered not showing up. When the walk began my friend Noshin and I walked ahead of the division, sometimes walking along paths near the main walk's in order to avoid the packed crowd. As the first couple of miles passed, the gaps in between walkers increased, so we returned to the main path. That's when the walk became noteworthy. Large groups of families, companies, or other types of walkers would cheer every once in a while, boosting the morale of everyone whose feet became tired after walking for hours. Some of the chants were directed towards a particular person, a loved one that had fallen to the illness. Seeing everyone at the walk was amazing and made the disease feel even more real. I would encourage everyone to attend AIDS Walk next year! -Katherine Doss Bronx Science

Taste of

Tribecca 5. 19. 18

TASTE OF CATERING On May, 19th I went to the Taste of TriBeCa event in which we were assigned different roles. I had to work in the VIP area where I was assigned a table of people to serve. The most memorable part for me was going to the food stands, observing numerous people having fun and enjoying their food despite the pouring rain. This was definitely a first experience for me to serve food for others because in all the other community service opportunities I had done, it was always me helping set up and observing others. However in this one I got to just help everyone throughout the whole event. Another of my favorite parts during these community service opportunities was meeting new people and making friends. Instead of pairing myself with the people I know, I decided to partner up with other people and I’m proud that I did because I was able to make a really great friend. Overall, this was just a really fun experience and I’m glad to be a part of Key Club. I hope to join more community service events like this and have even more fun. -Kelly Jiang Millennium High School

EAST MEETS WEST

Passport to Taiwan is a two day event, encompassing prep work and setting up the festival. On Saturday, I came to the event, and I immediately saw people working on drying cilantro and spinach. I went inside to wash my hands, and I smelled lots of Taiwanese food, like sausages and noodles. I went outside to dry the herbs and noticed some new faces; they were also Key Club members from various schools and divisions. After we finished drying the herbs, everyone took a short break and got to know each other. We even got snow cones as a treat! We then started putting our prepared food into boxes. We loaded all the food and beverages into a truck which contained all the supplies needed for the day after. Although there are a lot of stuff that needed to be done, we worked really efficiently, while learning some Taiwanese culture and meeting some new friends along the way! -William Leung (Saturday Shift) HSMSE

Passport to Taiwan, in Union Square Park, is a program that brings Taiwanese culture to the city. On Sunday morning, we had to set up tents for different stations and unload trucks. As stations were being set up, the amazing smell of food started to set in. Some of our sister clubs from D11 helped in the process of cooking. Each station was very unique in its own way as they brought out different products and foods of Taiwan. There was even a stage where Taiwanese artists could perform, but since it was raining hard that day, the seats had gotten wet. We then cleaned the seats with paper towels. Some of us started handing out pamphlets with information about the event. It was fun and all and at the end of the day, I would definitely come back to this event next year. - Pratik Yallapragada (Sunday Shift) HSMSE

Coming in a little late because of the rain, I unfortunately missed a lot of the actual setting up of the event, so I got right into helping each station get all the materials they needed. I was surprised by all of the different types of food being offered at the festival, including blood pudding and oyster pancakes, as well as almost 4 different bubble tea vendors! I also loved seeing all the different cultural activities that the festival had, including making dough figurines for the kids. This events is one of the biggest events for Asian Pacific American Heritage month, so I was super excited to not only be in attendance, but to help out at the festival! We set up pretty quickly after that, so many of the volunteers took the time to walk around the festivals and chat with their friends from other schools, who we don’t get to see very much. However, once the event started, it immediately got very busy. I was helping at the Jersey Shore Chinese School tent and helped prepare and distribute minced pork rice and rice cakes. Everyone who came was very excited about the pork rice, but unfortunately, the rice cakes had a hard time selling, so we eventually had to lower the price to only $1 per cake and the cakes sold out in 3 hours! I switched in between helping to garnish the plates and lining up food on the table in order to fit as much as we could on our small table. Later in the event, I shifted to help scoop rice for the mince pork rice, a task that left my arms feeling super sore the next day because of how sticky the rice was! I had to leave early after this, however, overall the event was very fun. I talked to some students from Millennium High School and we laughed together while complaining about how hard it was to scoop the bowls of rice. Even though the day had periodic bouts of rain that blew into the tent quite frequently, it was nevertheless a very event-packed day and an event that I keep coming back to since my first attendance last year! -Sammi Lin Stuyvesant -
