Introductions and Greetings

Lieutenant Governor's Greeting Hey Pandas! For those of you who don't know me yet, my name is Mara Yella and I am honored to serve as your 2018-2019 Lieutenant Governor. Currently, I attend the High School for Math, Science, and Engineering and I'm a junior. I have been a member since I was a freshman, and last year I was president of my home club. I am so excited to be able to serve you all this service year, and I know we will make this year a great one! I hope to encourage interclub relations and get more members exposed to our division's community. The moment I met more people and saw how they all worked together was the moment that I realized that Key Club is truly amazing, which is why I stayed committed. I want more people to see this and dive into the K-Family as well! I also want to make sure I stay approachable. Please know that I'm happy to help you with anything you ever need. I am normally able to respond pretty quickly to messages or emails (unless I'm drowning in homework), so don't hesitate to reach out! Stay awesome D11! Yours in service, Mara Yella

Trisha Melton SECRETARY DIVISION 13

What’s up NYDKC, I’m Trisha Melton and this year I will be serving as your 2018-2019 secretary. I am from Division 13, which is right by the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I’m super excited to continue my work on the district board after serving as a Distinguished Lieutenant Governor last year. I learned so much serving as an LTG last year and plan to use my experience to better the board this year. If you ever need to contact me my email is secretary@nydkc.org.

Amit Narang TREASURER DIVISION 11 Hey Division 11! Treasurer Amit here. I hope your Key Clubbing has gotten off to a great start this year, and I know we’re gonna do some great things this year! I’ll be working closely with you guys to ensure that we reach our Fundraising goal and that we have fun doing so! There’s a lot that I want to accomplish this year, and I’m really excited to share some of my goals with you. Firstly, I’m working on a fundraising website to eliminate the need to fill out FRF’s. Hopefully, this will be out before September, so all of you can use it for the new school year. Secondly, I’m reaching out to companies to establish a service-project fund within the District, which would allow more high schools to establish their very own service-projects in their communities. Thirdly, I’ll be working with individual clubs to establish their own fundraising goals for the year, which would increase communication between clubs and the District and allow us to raise even more money! Lastly, I’m working on establishing discounts for Key Clubbers! One deal is already in the works, so stay tuned for more information soon! Most of all, I’m excited to be a resource for you all. No matter how silly the question, always feel free to hit me up for advice, suggestions, or even just to talk!

April Divisional April 23rd Our first divisional of the service year occurred at Baruch College Campus High School. Almost all of the clubs in our division attended, including one of our newest clubs: Fordham Prep! Even though we were a little rushed for time, we were able to go through past and future events for April and May. Stuyvesant Key Club even sold Krispy Kreme donuts! All the clubs gave updates, which you can find in the April minutes on the divisional website. I am incredibly excited for our next divisional, which will be on June 4th at Bronx Science High School. The divisional board and I are planning some more activities for member bonding, so make sure to look out for that!

March of DimesÂ

4. 29. 18

The Walk For a Fight

On a breezy Sunday afternoon, we spent the last week of April participating in the March for Dimes event that was joined by members from D9 and 11. (GO SHARKS AND PANDAS!) What is this “March of Dimes” event? Well, it is a fundraising event to raise awareness and money for babies to fight against premature birth defects and us volunteers were there to help donate and take the three mile walk. We started at Columbus Ave and during the walk, we happened to go through Central Park as well. My favorite (funny) memory in taking part of this event is when we were walking and chanting through the walk. The chant, “HEY KEY CLUB, HOW DO YOU FEEL?!” replied with, “WE FEEL GOOD, OH I FEEL SO GOOD, AI!” raised in volume. Around 11:30 am, both divisions reached the finish line in Lexington Ave and took our divisional photo as a way to end of this day and march. Despite being engulfed by the strange weather, overall the event was a blast, once again. I didn’t go to this event just to get out often, but to be another contributor to help spread more awareness about this important fundraiser since it is for a very important cause. This event was different than the other events that I’ve been and reported on because I actually took part as a walker in a combined divisional walk. Although I didn’t really “meet” new friends during the walk, I was proud to see other Key Club members that I’ve worked with recently and other members that I’ve never seen before take part in this event. Overall, I’ve learned that just by taking part in a (3 mile) walk, we walkers can still make an impact by raising awareness of birth defects. In conclusion, I would like to thank the members from D9 and 11 that participated in this event. “I FEEL GOOD, OH I FEEL SO GOOD, AI!” -Garrick Tseng Millennium High School

GREENSPACE 4. 8. 18

Beautifying a Garden When we arrived at the site, the greenspace looked like a small abandoned piece of land with the beginnings of a park. It had stones all over, a small greenhouse in the back, and much of it wasn’t developed. I wondered, what could possibly be going on here? Soon after, I realized the complexity of what was going on in this park on a corner in Brooklyn. When we first arrived, we were told to add leaves to large bins already half full with decomposing leaves. The event manager, a man full of passion and knowledge about the garden told us about how these leaves were soon going to be made into compost. Local residents dumped bags of leaves from the autumn so that they could be used back again as soil instead of ending up in landfills. Soon afterwards, we helped beautify the garden space by adding stones to line the paths, moved around wood to make a future playpit, as well as other tasks that had to be done before the garden opens in the summer. In the summertime, he explained, the garden would be filled with people and children playing around. They also had a greenhouse, which needed some fixing up after a recent storm. We also learned about their rainwater collection system, and the importance of it considering the current sewer system in New York. The event was really fun because although the garden was small, there was a lot to do and many problems to solve. There were also snacks and it was fun working together to make this a better space for the community. I would definitely recommend this event as it was fun, educational, and an overall great experience. -Akshay Raju The Bronx High School of Science

Playground Improvement At Corlears Hook Park

4. 15. 18

Swinging By the Park On Sunday 4/15, fellow Key Clubbers Mia Manabat, Eric Park, and I headed out early to volunteer for the Playground Improvement at Corlears Hook Park in lower Manhattan. It was a very cold day and I was only wearing a light sweater, but the vigor of the work quickly warmed me up, as well as the free coffee and munchkin breakfast we were provided! Our task was to rake leaves from the flower beds and then uproot some of the bush-like plants. It was a lot of hard work, but after a few hours, the flower and tree beds were looking much cleaner. We then took a break for lunch, which was an amazing free sandwich box with chips, pasta, fruit, cookies, and yogurt included! Feeling refreshed, we went back to work by raking leaves from the lawns and smoothing the dirt in the garden beds. It was very exhausting and cold work, but by the end of the day you could see how much better the park space looked! - Rie Saute Hunter High School

Laguardia's Easter

Fundrasider

Laguardia Key Club’s Easter Fundraiser finally took place on Sunday, April 29th in Central Park, just right after the March of Dimes. The fundraiser consisted of eating some awesome food people graciously brought, playing a game of volleyball, competing in our Egg Hunt, and witnessing our egg roulette that ended up being between Kimberly Nee and Aaron Wu (congrats Kimberly on winning!). After weeks of constantly hyping it up, Laguardia Key Club was more than satisfied with its outcome. As the service year is beginning to come to an end, this fundraiser was a great way to bring those who came together and to make new friends! We all thank the people who showed up and together we helped raise money for the Honey Bee Conservancy! - Kristen Lew, Laguardia High School Key Club

4. 18. 18 Design on a Dime

Design on a Dime In the weekend of April 28th, numerous volunteers from Hunter Key Club volunteered at a local thrift shop in lower Manhattan. Through this service, clothes that were never worn but still in good condition were donated to the store to then sell. Mainly run by volunteers and interns devoted to the community, the money earned from selling these clothes are donated towards funds in helping AIDs. Volunteers spent time doing a variety of engaging tasks such as sorting clothes, keeping the store clean, and helping with customer service such as providing them with the jewelry behind the counter that they would like to see. After the store closed, volunteers stayed for a little longer to also help with reorganizing any moved items, and organizing display items for the following day of business. The experience provided volunteers with insight in how the thrift shop functioned for a good cause as well as an experience to meet different kinds of people who have been long term volunteering for this kind of cause. - Sammi Chum Hunter College High School

VISION WALK

4. 18. 18

VisionWalk was a fun event where I got to see all my Key Club friends. The weather was perfect for a volunteer event and I couldn’t stop smiling. I showed up early with my friends and helped set up the kid’s section. We organized the brushes, tattoos, sponges, etc. Before the kids showed up, we decided to practice our tattooing skills on ourselves and each other. Slowly, all the different teams showed up and it was really inspiring seeing so many people with all their different t-shirts. After filling up on some bagels, some of the Key Clubs left to join the walk. Our club stayed behind and tattooed anyone who wanted one. Eventually, the teams returned and so did all of our friends. The next few hours were filled with dog petting, tattooing all our friends, bagels, dancing, and more dog petting. I was given a bunch of beaded necklaces that I distributed among all the Key Clubbers. We also danced the Cotton-Eyed Joe. All in all, this event was really fun and the people that came made it even funner! - Freya Zhu Stuyvesant High School

70TH ANNUAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING CONFERENCE

LTC RECAP: Mara Yella This year’s LTC was like none I’ve experienced before. My past two times attending LTC, I had fun with my friends, cheering everyone on, and met people from all over the district. LTC has always been an incredible learning experience for me, but this year it was more. This year I got to attend LTC as an Lieutenant Governor-elect, which for the first time meant that I was also conference staff. Simply the ride up to the Desmond was different. Instead of coming with my club, I came up with other LTGs and LTG-elects. It was amazing getting to meet some of the other city LTGs, and upon arriving, I met the LTGs from the rest of New York. In addition to being conference staff, this year I was able to come to LTC a day early. While it was odd to see the Desmond so empty, I loved being able to greet clubs as they arrived. I remember walking around with the beaver mascot and cheering whenever people walked through the entrance. Throughout the entire weekend, I was able to meet and bond with the other LTGs. That in itself may be what’s most memorable about this LTC. We were all new to being LTG, but we were all in the same boat and learned our roles and responsibilities together. Also, we were often assigned to positions in groups, giving us more time to get to know each other. Overall, I am incredibly thankful for LTC this year. Aside from the new experience of attending LTC as an LTG-elect, the conference as a whole was amazing. Our keynote speaker was inspirational and captivating, and workshops were really fun. While I did have to miss Playfair, I still felt like I met tons of new people. The weekend seemed like it could last forever, and believe me, I wish it could, but the weekend culminated in the closing session. The session was nice, except people’s allergies kept making them tear up…. I think this LTC is my most memorable to date, and I will always remember this wonderful experience!

LTC RECAP: Akaneh Wang In March of this year, I went to Leadership Training Conference (LTC) for the first time ever. The bus ride there was spent finishing up a last-minute traditional poster for the poster contest, and both my friend and I who were working on it got carsick. When we all arrived at the Desmond hotel, I was exhausted. However, when we stepped into the hotel, I was amazed by how everything looked. The little gardens, footpaths, ponds and houses in the hotel made it look like a mini village. From then on, each short day was filled from early morning to late night with activities. I had so much fun and I made a lot of new friends as well as great memories. One of my favorite memories from LTC was when Key Clubbers from our division started playing music in one of the courtyards, and other Key Clubbers from different divisions joined in and started singing and dancing. At the end of the trip, my whole body hurt from all the singing, yelling, dancing, and clapping, but I was really sad to go. When I finally reached my school, I remember crying for a solid twenty minutes before I went home. I learned from LTC that sometimes, friendship comes from the most unlikely places, and that spending time with and getting closer to a friend is one of the best feelings in the world. LTC truly was an unforgettable experience, and I can’t wait to go next year!
