Miley’s Rant about Liam

E V E RYO N E ’S TA L K I N G A B O U T. . .

T

he reality star and rapper finally tied the knot in a lavish ceremony at Fort Di Belvedere in Florence, reportedly setting the couple back a cool $4m. The bride wore a white, lace Givenchy mermaid dress and a long silk veil while the groom went for a tailored black, Givenchy tuxedo. The 200-strong guest list included rapper royalty Pharrell Williams and John Legend plus Hollywood A-Listers Gwyneth Paltrow and Will Smith. There was a noticeable absence from Jay-Z and Beyonce, amid rumours of a fling with one of Kim’s closest friends and bridesmaids. The wedding party ate beef fillet, monkfish and strawberry sorbet and got through magnums of Armand de Brignac champagne. Reported action from the night includes a hook up between Kylie Jenner and Jaden Smith (Will’s 15-year old son) as well as the groom revealing his bride’s new name “Kim Kardashian West”.

‘Cold’ Bradley Cooper

W

e’d normally be saying Hot Bradley Cooper but this time reports from the US suggest Jennifer Esposito is slagging off her famous ex in her new autobiography. Actress Jennifer, 41, talks about a “funny, smart, arrogant, cold man” who she broke up with in 2007. The book “Jennifer’s Way” is out soon and mainly chronicles the ‘Blue Blood’ star’s health problems and life story although we think the queue outside book stores maybe more to do with her comments directed at her ‘American Hustle’ ex-husband.

T

werking star Miley Cyrus took to the stage at London’s G-A-Y Club and proceeded to give a foul-mouthed rant that suggests she’s far from over her former fiance Liam Hemsworth. “Every time you get in your car, you’re going to hear my f***ing song on the f***ing radio, you piece of shit,” she said admitting she was wasted on vodka before singing her hit ‘Wrecking Ball’. She went on to say, “So I’m going to tell those motherf***ers that broke my heart, particularly one, to suck my fat d**k.” Lovely. The singer later claimed on Twitter that her outburst had nothing to do with former flame Liam.

Congratulations Emma Watson

T

he Harry Potter starlet has just received a degree in English Literature from prestigious Ivy League University, Brown, in the US. Emma posted a picture of herself on Twitter wearing the famous mortarboard cap and gown before her graduation ceremony. The 24-year-old has previously admitted taking five years as opposed to the normal four years to complete the degree due to her “hectic acting schedule”. Either way, job well done Emma, congratulations.

FOR HIM GADGETS & TECH

SCI-FI TO HIGH STREET

O

nce dismissed as a sci-fi fantasy, smart watches are now set to become the next big piece of wearable tech. However as with all emerging pieces of kit, it’s always a gamble as to how best to stay ahead of the curve - while not ending up with a dud. We bring you our guide to some of the most-talked about smart watches to help you end up looking more Captain Kirk than Mr Spock.

PEBBLE STEEL

The Pebble was updated earlier this year following an initial release in 2013. The $249 mark two version, still only officially for sale in the US, features an improved design with a choice of beefed-up matte or stainless steel straps to give it a less childlike look. A range of apps are available for the open-source watch, which connects to an Android or iPhone device via bluetooth, to allow you to view your text messages, emails and alerts. But it is the wealth of apps which have been developed on top of these which set it apart. ESPN, Pandora and Yelp are among the 3000 futurethinking businesses to have launched a Pebble app. A Mercedez Benz app allows you to check how much petrol is in your motor direct from your wrist. It’s the possibility of a launch for single’s hook-up app Tinder that has got us most excited though.

14 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 01

SONY SMARTWATCH 2

For the more fashion conscious the latest Sony offering may be more for your wrist. The next-generation version allows the wearer to choose from a range of changeable coloured straps - including classic black, brown or leather options and a brighter plastic selection for when you feel like releasing your inner hipster. You don’t need a Sony phone to connect to either as the watch is Android compatible. The range of apps is more limited but includes a clever cameraphone controller which allows you to use the watch to capture images and videos definitely good for some hidden camera pranks. In summary, the Sony Smartwatch 2 has made progress in looks since the Smartwatch 1 but its screen, interface and range of functions still need work, particularly for a device with a RRP of €179.

NEWS

CARS THAT READ YOUR MIND SAMSUNG GEAR 2

Hot on the heels of its debut accessory, Samsung has rolled out an updated, second-generation version. It also features changeable strap option - is this functionality going to filter through to traditional watches? Along with a souped-up overall design when compared with the original version. The €250 watch comes with a host of features including WatchOn - the ability to use it as remote control to change the channel and volume on your TV. Fitness features are also a big part of the Gear 2. It offers a range of data for runners including distance travelled, number of steps taken and top speed. A heart-rate monitor measures your pulse to display BPM levels - also useful for when you are getting too stressed at work perhaps.

4K TVS THAT LOOK AROUND

T

op-end electronics manufacturer Bang & Olufsen has launched a 55 inch, super high definition TV that follows its owner around the house. The £5995 BeoVision Avant, named in homage to the first TV set the manufacturer developed, rotates, slides and moves closer to the viewer. We aren’t sure if it will fit through the bathroom door to come with you to the toilet though.

If controlling your phone from your watch already sounds a bit old fashioned then you may be interested in the fact that scientists are developing smart paint - allowing the colour of your car to change depending on your mood. Get passed by a Lamborghini? Your car could turn green with jealousy. Or get cut up and suffer from a spot of road-rage? Your wheels will turn red to alert the driver ahead you are not best pleased with their driving skills. The project, codenamed AutoEmotive, is being developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology works by embedding tiny sensors into the skin which then pass data into electrodes in the ‘conductive paint.’ The technology can also detect other emotions including frustration - with one developer reported to be working on a concept Xbox controller which would recognise when gamers are running out of patience and tailor the game’s level of difficulty accordingly. No more throwing the controller across the room.

Along with a sleek design the Avant features a drop down soundbar housing a handful of the eight in-built speakers. Bang & Olufsen boss Tue Mantoni said the BeoVision Avant was created to provide discerning homeowners the ultimate in authentic performance, intuitive simplicity and convenience. “Our research shows that consumers want more and more from their televisions,” he explains. “People are pressed for time, and they want entertainment that just works so they can focus on it – and each other – rather than the technology itself.”

NEWS If you’re anything like the Marbella Rocks team to really appreciate your nights out there’s nothing quite like a relaxing night in. Queue DVD, dinner and a good bottle of wine. Here’s a rundown and recipe for a quality night in.

RECIPE

SEAFOOD LINGUINE

What better way to enjoy the fine seafood the Spanish Costa has to offer then piling it all in a delicious light and fresh seafood linguine. There are many takes on this recipe but for the best tasting go for the garlic and white wine heavy combination. Enjoy! Cooking time: 10 minutes Preparation time: 10 minutes Ingredients: (makes 2 portions) 1/2 packet of fresh linguine 25 grams of butter 25 grams of parmesan 1 chopped clove of garlic 1 finely diced onion 1 handful of raw, peeled tiger prawns 1 handful of fresh mussels and/or clams 1 tub of double cream 175ml glass of dry white wine Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1. Prepare seafood by peeling and deveining prawns and cleaning and debearding mussels (tap any open mussels on a hard surface and discard any that don’t shut tightly within a few seconds)

18 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 01

2. Bring a large pot of water to the boil add the fresh linguine pasta and cook for 4 minutes till al dente. Place on side. 3. Melt butter in a large wok or pan and sauté garlic and onion on a medium heat until tender. Stir in the cream and white wine until sauce has thickened. Add prawns and mussels and stir in Parmesan cheese, cook until prawns have cooked. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for a further 2 minutes. 4. Transfer linguine to a serving dish and top with the sauce, add sea salt and pepper then garnish with parsley. Serve immediately.

WINE

WINE MATCH

The secret with pasta is to match the wine to the sauce. So, for this cream-based sauce you need something to offset the richness, so try either a Chardonnay or Semillon.

Californian Chardonnay is generally very high in alcohol because it is so hot there that all of the grape sugars are converted to alcohol- around 15% abv. Also they add oak flavouring to their Chardonnay to give it that heavy, buttery, vanilla taste. But the classic region for Chardonnay is Burgundy in France. This is where the best are made e.g. Chablis, Mersault, Montrachet, Pouilly-Fuisse. Good quality versions are also available from Australia such as the Hunter Valley, Adelaide Hills and Margaret River. Chile has some tasty offerings and all over Europe produces reasonable wines from this super-versatile grape. Next time you’re shopping for wine reach out for a Chardonnay from a different country, or an un-oaked version. Time to discover something new. Salut! For more wine pairing ideas meet our very own wine angel Tracey Lee on page 86.

DVD RELEASES OF THE MONTH

BOOK REVIEW

LONE ALAN THE SNOW SURVIVOR PARTRIDGE: QUEEN ALPHA PAPA Lone Survivor is the true story of an ill-fated US Navy Seal mission to track down a senior al-Qaeda operative. Dropped in the remote mountains of Afghanistan the four Navy seals played by Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch and Ben Foster come up against an almost impossible mission when they become surrounded by a Taliban force and have to endure one of the most valiant efforts of modern warfare. The film tracks their events over 24 hours as Operation Redwing goes from bad to worse and they are isolated from their central command and any foreseeable help of getting out alive. Not for the faint hearted this film has some harrowing scenes and one of the most poignant moral decisions ever faced in a movie. Written and directed by Friday Night Light’s Peter Berg the story was originally a New York Times bestseller.

The immensely talented Steve Coogan reprises his role as bumbling radio broadcaster Alan Partridge for a one-off movie version that won’t disappoint. While not laugh out load funny throughout Coogan’s wit and his portrayal of this makeshift petty, conceited and egotistical character Alan Partridge makes for excellent viewing. The story kicks off with Alan trying to make another comeback (he’s been a national and local TV broadcaster, a writer of ‘bouncing back’ and even killed a guest on live TV!) While at his radio station he finds himself at the centre of a siege when another fellow DJ decides to hold the station hostage after learning he’s getting sacked by new management. Fans of his previous BBC One show “I’m Alan Partridge” will love this film and it’s a good introduction to the comic talent of Coogan to newcomers.

This Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist really knows how to tell a great story, turning from polar opposite subject matter like religion to drugs seamlessly. The stories main character Barrett Meeks re-evaluates his life after seeing a strange light hovering in the sky over Central Park in New York. He doesn’t believe in visions or God but can’t deny what he’s seen. Meanwhile his older brother Tyler, a struggling musician, uses cocaine to make him feel better to cope with his terminally ill fiancée and he needs heroin to help write songs. The characterisations make this new novel an exciting and modern read even though it is a profound unresolved novel about love. Cunningham was the author of acclaimed 1998 novel “The Hours” (the film version won Nicole Kidman a Best Actress Oscar) and this is tipped to be his best work since. A must-have, gripping summer read for both men and women, old and young. There’s something for everyone in this emotionally piercing book.

NEWS Now summer’s officially here there’s an abundance of events and parties to choose from. We’ve sifted through them to give you your Most Glamorous Marbella Parties LineUp with interviews from the leading figureheads behind these events.

Most Glamorous Marbella Parties

UNIQUE PARTIES

T

his month, DJ Colin Francis and Jermaine J-Funk - founders of Unique Parties with events now in Dubai, Ibiza, London and of course Marbella, tell all in our exclusive Interview.

How did the party start? Five years ago we were tired of going to the same boring parties in Marbella and wanted to create something fresh and exciting. Unique parties was born. Why is your party the one to go to? We have the best DJ’s and the best crowds. The atmosphere is second to none! Who are your celebrity attendees? We have so many.... Rihanna, Drake, Trey Songz, Scott Disick. But they just come to party like everyone else. What’s everyone wearing? Whatever is in and looks good!! What’s everyone drinking? Champagne plus the odd magnum of Vodka and a few Jagerbombs. What your anthem of the summer so far? Second City - ‘I Wanna Feel’

What’s your summer album recommendation? Ministry of Sound’s “Marbella Sessions 2014” mixed by DJ Colin Francis of course! Last year it was the highest selling summer album and this year it looks set to be bigger than ever.

LOVE JUICE

L

oveJuice owner George Mensah reveals all about how his sell-out party nights came to arrive in Marbella.

Ticket prices/ where to buy/ opening times? 20-40 euros. Go to www.uniqueparties.com. Unique Parties pool party at Sisu 12 midday - 8pm. Any big acts signed for the summer? Rick Ross and a few more we won’t mention yet.... Do you hold after parties? If so where? We do after-parties at Sleek Thursday & Friday and at Aqwa Mist on Saturday & Sunday from 11pm to 6am. Why Marbella?! It is the best place to be for good people, music and amazing pool parties.

20 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 01

How did the party start? The Parties started in 2010 when I decided we needed to expand the brand beyond London and Essex. We started to create a Bank Holiday buzz with pool parties at Sala Beach which quickly made LoveJuice become ‘The Saturday’ to go when in Marbella on Spray Weekends. Now we have progressed to the rooftop of Sisu Boutique Hotel, bringing a new dimension to Marbella day partying.

What’s everyone drinking? Bottle culture is massive for LoveJuice, so it’s LPR champagne, Dom Perignon, Crystal, as well as Grey Goose, Belverdere and a good old Jagerbomb.

Why is your party the one to go to? Our parties are about having fun, with cutting edge feel-good music. That remains wherever we throw our events, with a particular attention to attracting a gorgeous crowd. I think our consistency to do this makes us popular. Who are your celebrity attendees? Marbella breeds famous faces, we’ve had Tinie Tempah, Katie Price, Mark Wright, the entire Towie cast, Made In Chelsea cast, and an array of top end footballers.

COCKTAIL OF THE MONTH

NEWS

What’s your summer anthem most likely to hear? This year I predict Oliver Heldens ‘Gecko’ or Oliver $ and Jimi Jules ‘Pushin On’. Ticket prices/ where to buy/ opening times? The rooftop party kicks off at midday at Sisu Boutique on Sat 28th June, Sat 26th July, Sat August 23rd all bookings and enquiries head to www.love4clubbing.com Any big acts signed for the summer? Yeah we have big acts planned, in the past we have had MK, Disclosure, Rick Ross, Laidback Luke and more so keep your eyes peeled online!

What’s everyone wearing? In Marbella its designer central. At our rooftop parties it’s luxury swimwear, Gucci, Olebar Brown, Louis Vuitton, Vilebrequin, Victorias secret. At night expect to see Zanotti, Louboutin, Dior, YSL - everyone looks their best.

Do you hold after parties? Yeah the after party for LoveJuice in 2014 will be held at Aqwa Mist from midnight. Why Marbella? It made sense, our target market suited an exclusive and convenient location, where we could bring all our elements from the UK into a forever summer atmosphere. I knew we would be able to create a bigger brand awareness, making everyone feel the love, taste the juice.

UNCLE ALAN’S LEG OPENERS

Formula 1 racing driver, Uncle Alan Charles, a close friend of the Marbella Rocks team, has finally given away the recipe for his top secret, crudely named Leg Openers cocktails. Famous from the Grand Prix Circuit of the 1970’s these highly potent but delicious cocktails can be attributed to the baby boom of his era. Serve in a frosted champagne flute. Tip glass upside down and cover rim with sugar. Next place in the flute in this order: 1 sugar lump 3 drops of Angostura Bitter 25ml of brandy (or 50ml for those that like a stronger taste) Topped up with champagne Garnish with a raspberry

FEATURES

Hello

FERRARI E

xplaining just how fast Ferrari’s new flagship car LaFerrari can really go is not as easy as you might think.

ISSUE 01 | MARBELLAROCKS

23

FEATURES The LaFerrari is not just the fastest Ferrari ever built, it is the fastest car made by mainstream manufacturer ever to wear a numberplate. Some will point to the Bugatti Veyron and note it has even more power and takes even less time to reach 100km/h, but the former advantage is miniscule and obliterated by the over half tonne of extra weight it carries, and the latter simply a function of the Bugatti’s four-wheel drive traction. In any real world scenario, that Bugatti would not see which way this Ferrari went.

I

could tell you it will hit 100km/h from rest in under 3sec and won’t stop accelerating until it’s somewhere the far side of 350km/h and doubtless you’d be very impressed. I could tell you that once you add the power of its 6.3-litre V12 engine to that of its electric motor it produces 950bhp, yet weighs about the same as a small family hatchback. But these are still just numbers. So let me try to put it in less dry terms. It has more power than Fernando Alonso’s Formula Ferrari, and I mean a lot more. It is the only road car I’ve known whose acceleration from rest is genuinely frightening - even to those standing outside the car. As for the inside, when you put your foot hard down for the first time, what happens next is so alien that the instinct of survival will make your foot lift off the pedal, whether you want it to or not. It will create equally involuntary actions from your passenger who will gasp in air only so that he or she can scream it out again, while his or her right foot stamps frantically at a brake pedal that isn’t there. Whatever your concept of fast may be, whether it is defined by BMW M3, Porsche 911 or any old common-or-garden normal Ferrari, this one will take it and gleefully burn it before your eyes.

Ferrari’s new flagship stands at the centre of a new unholy trinity of hybrid hypercars, flanked by the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918. All use electrical power in much the same way as a Toyota Prius to boost a petrol engine, but to rather greater effect. And of them all it is the Ferrari - the most powerful, lightest and most expensive of the lot – that claims all the saloon bar bragging rights to itself. So when you approach it, an insect-like study in scarlet from some dystopian future dumped unceremoniously outside the Ferrari gates, you naturally expect some pre-flight ceremony, or at least explanation. But there is none. No one steps forward to hand you a G-suit, neck brace, helmet or weapons-grade sedatives. The door scissors open and as you peer inside, it looks quite a lot like any other Ferrari cabin. Except it isn’t. There’s no elegant way in, so you sort of tumble, grasping various bits of carbon fibre bodywork to control your descent. Once in you try to adjust the seat but it doesn’t move. This is because you don’t actually sit in a seat, but merely a padded section of the car’s structure. You don’t move to meet the car, it moves to meet you with not only the steering but the entire pedal box telescoping in or out to meet your hands and feet. It’s so comfortable you wonder why more cars aren’t made this way.

The engine blasts into life. It’s not a particularly attractive sound at idle, but it oozes aggression. You can summon up quite a number of different displays on the TFT screen in front of you, all of which will make you feel like a fighter pilot. I choose one with a vast central rev-counter and a red-line at 9250rpm. It’s easier than you’d think to trickle out into the traffic, largely because your very presence turns you in a red carpet royal among other road users. In Italy where I got to test drive the car, everyone wants to get out of your way. But driving it fast in public is an exercise in frustration and futility. Even on quiet roads it is so quick it eats the distance between one car and the next in barely discernible time. So it feels like you’re always in traffic. And while overtaking is the work of a blink of the eye, you can never get into a rhythm nor even start to understand what this car will really do. With a car like this it’s not just your licence that’s at risk, it’s your liberty. Happily Ferrari has a test track, somewhere the LaFerrari is able to express itself fully. And I’d like to say my hour alone at its wheel on the circuit was the most frightening experience I’ve ever had in a car, because that would seem an appropriate thing to say. Except it wasn’t. Forget the power, forget the stats; forget the fact that there are places here it’ll do

280km/h where no other Ferrari I’ve driven will do more than 230km/h. Ferrari’s yet greater achievement is to take unprecedented road car performance and package it in such a way that anyone with just a bit of time, experience and understanding can exploit. And when you do, it’ll take you to a place no other road car can reach. Any car that can involve you so much you start to feel part of the machine is a rare and exceptional device. The LaFerrari does better than this: it makes the machine feel like part of you. So much so that when they hang out the flag that tells you they’d like their car back, and you slink back to the pits, out of the red insect and into a normal road car, it is the every day, ho-hum tin box that feels like the alien creature, not the LaFerrari. Ferrari will build 499 LaFerraris and charge €1.2million plus local taxes for each one. But don’t think about ringing your dealer, even if you’re in that league: Ferrari offered the cars only to its most loyal customers and every one sold without its new owner so much as sitting in it. They bet that Ferrari would be true to its word and produce a driving experience unlike any other the world had seen to this point. If anything, Ferrari has over-delivered.

onar is one of the biggest festivals on the worldwide dance music scene today. The three-day event successfully manages to

mix mainstream acts with underground dance music creating a world-class music festival that appeals to die-hard dance music fans as well as those that enjoy the occasional club night out. Since it began in the early 90’s, Sonar has grown into Sonar By Day and Sonar By Night featuring 100 acts spread across two respective venues. Sonar By Day at the Placa D’Espana in the city centre has four large main stages and features The Sonar Village, a place to kick back, relax and enjoy the music and Mediterranean weather. Be warned it’s almost 40 degrees in June so there may be an abundance of bare flesh. Bothered I hear you say? This year you’ll be captivated by CHIC featuring Nile Rogers, Massive Attack, Rudimental and Royksop at Sonar.

International Benicassim Festival is back with a bang from Thursday

17 to Sunday 20 July 2014. Officially called FIB Heineken, or Benicassim, as its faithful attendees more affectionately know it, this event caters for every musical taste from rock to pop, to dance, to indie. This year the line up includes Kasabian, Paul Weller, Razorlight, Ellie Goulding, Lily Allen, Tinie Tempah and Travis. But being Benicassim’s 20th birthday bash expect to see a few hidden surprises which the organisers are keeping under wraps till the event. Last year Killers’ front man Brandon Flowers spoke to the audience in Spanish, as night set in a gigantic firework display lit up the whole sky around the festival. FIB also offers a wide range of non-musical entertainment from dance, art, theatre, fashion and film. So if non-stop partying for four days is not your thing you can experience a bit of cultural entertainment in between. Another huge bonus for Benicassim fans is its location, a beautiful beachside resort. So spending a few hours swimming and sunbathing is a good way to relax before, during and after the event, and a welcome recovery for some. The €120 ticket price includes all four days of the festival and camping. There is an option to pay extra for VIP camping which we highly recommend as you get use of the VillaCamp, where you can pitch your tent under trees and canopies providing much needed shelter from the summer sun. The toilet and camping facilities are also pretty good for a festival.

Marbella - Slainte Irish Sports Bar – Located opposite La Sala and Aqwa Mist this fun, friendly Irish Bar has undergone a recent refurbishment with 10 screens and a promise to be the place to watch the World Cup, whoever your supporting. Lineker’s – The Home of Sport. It’s owner Wayne Lineker, Former England Captain Gary’s Lineker’s younger brother, runs this place, so an obvious choice for football viewing really. The infamous second

line bar in Puerto Banus will be showing all the live matches. Portside – Probably the largest place to watch the football. 30 large screens placed on three areas; inside, outside courtyard and front terrace. All the games will be shown live. They have warned to arrive early for seating and full waitress service during big matches. Elviria – the newly renovated Nikki Beach is showing all the matches and are even putting on a Special

the World Cup matches. They will also be offering 2 for 1 on select drinks and full waitress service. Whereas some people will be sweltering in the heat, Living Room is fronted with sliding glass doors to let the much-needed air in. Estepona – The Robin Hood Inn – a great choice to watch the football as they have outdoor as well as indoor screens. Located on the A7 it has ample parking and a great food menu to boost.

Sotogrande – The Hairy Lemon - Live coverage of every match on multiple screens and late night license until 3am showing all late games. There is a great selection of British larger, ciders and ales as well as Estrella Galicia naturally brewed in copper tanks on the premises. Gibraltar – The best bar to watch the football is Champions Sports Bar & Grill in Ocean Village, with O’Reilly’s Irish bar and Ivy Sports Bar coming a close second and third to that.

he RC44 is a 50-50 amateurs and professionals split in an eight person crew with racing taking place over five

days; one day of match, followed by four days of fleet racing. All boats have to be made to a strict one-design racing format so they sail with a level playing field. Match racing is compelling to watch and a race can be won or lost before the start signal has even sounded. The fleet races are very short, intense, action-packed affairs with boats frequently separated by just seconds at the finish line. The RC44 Championship Tour began in the Caribbean in February before the fleet travelled across the Atlantic to Europe where they raced in Portugal in April and Sweden in May before hitting the exclusive Mediterranean port of Sotogrande in Spain, located between Gibraltar and Marbella. The final leg sees the fleet travel to Muscat in Oman in November before the overall winner is crowned. There are 14 teams representing nine countries in the RC44 Championship Tour. There is also an onboard 9th man competition where a VIP guest can actually sit on board during a race. The RC44 Tour was launched in 2005 by one of one of sailings most recognizable icons Russell Coutts, a four-time winner of the prestigious America’s Cup. Sotogrande has a history of holding world-class sporting events. The Valderrama Golf Course has staged The Ryder Cup ’97, Volvo Masters (1986-2006) and American Express World Championship in . ashion blogging is changing the way people dress. This may seem like a stark statement but thousands of style aficionados are posting pictures of their outfits daily, what’s more they are ready to wear for any occasion, be it work, holiday, day off or party wear. Previously, catwalk shows and fashion magazines dictated what trends the average girl or guy would wear on a day-to-day basis. Countless pages of albeit beautiful, high-end fashion models adorn the pages of Vogue and the like but mostly these outfits are unwearable for everyday occasions. Now we can simply go online and check out fashion from some of the top dressed people in the world and copy their style secrets so we in turn look like we’ve got our own personal stylist, when all we have is an iPad and a bit of inside knowledge from the fashion experts.

MIKEY

DASH

o here goes, my first Mikey Kardashian hair ‘SNIPPET’ (see what I did there… snip snip) where I talk all about what’s going on in my exciting little world this month.

I’m sitting writing this tonight having just returned home from working my magic on one of my gorgeous girls, Rochelle Humes (1/5 of girl band ‘The Saturdays’ & wife of Marvin) today was all about getting Rochelle ready for the television BAFTAs, where her and Marvin were presenting an award together. The look we went for, for the event was simple, straight, and very natural… those of you who know my work know I’m normally all about volume and texture and luxe waves, but recently on Roch I’ve been trying to strip things back a bit and do more simple styles, something a bit more elegant and less like what everyone else is doing, Rochelle and I always sit and discuss what we may want to do next with her look, sometimes it’ll be changing her colour slightly, or cutting her Easilocks a bit shorter to change things up a bit, sometimes we even try something totally different like the Bardot inspired up-do I did for her in Feb for London Fashion Week, a gorgeous simple up-do like that is perfect if your wanting to strip things back and show off an outfit, or even for those times when

you haven’t had time for a blow-dry and need a quick fix, an up-do is a great go-to. With this particular look, I sprayed Roch’s hair with SHOW haircare dry shampoo to create a more workable texture for me to back comb and play with, once i had sprayed and brushed that through her hair I worked some texture powder through the roots of the top section just to make it slightly more textured (try Fudge ‘big hair powder’ for added texture and volume). Once that was done I sectioned off the top area of her hair and clipped that out of the way, and then worked in vertical sections around the hair backcombing the hair ready to roll into my chignon, once that was done and pinned in place, I took down my top section and back combed that to create the height I wanted. Once thats done you can lightly smooth over with a Mason Pearson brush to tame any unwanted back combing, and fix with hair spray, the key to this look is nothing should look too smooth and perfect. So this month I’m completely obsessed with SHOW hair cares

70 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 01

entire range of products, they all smell totally divine and the packaging is totally out of this world, It’d glam up even the dullest of dressing tables. The hair fragrance is completely amazing, we all hate the smell of smoke, or hairspray in our hair, so this is the perfect cover up. I’m completely obsessed with it and will be using it daily until the compliments stop. This month I’m also loving a quick change up. Short hair to Long hair. Long hair to Short hair, why can’t we have the best of both worlds? My line of hair pieces launch this summer allowing you to do just that in no time at all. I’ve designed 2 styles in 3 ombré colour ways which allow you to change up your look in seconds, These are the first products to launch from my VERY exciting new line with my favourite hair extensions brand Easilocks, with a lot more exciting pieces coming out before christmas. With a lot more exciting pieces coming soon, I’ll be sure to keep you posted.

MARBELLA ROCKS NON INVASIVE

W

hile botox and invasive facial surgery is undeniably popular nowadays its actually the non-invasive treatments that are on the rise, accounting for 75% of all cosmetic procedures done in 2014. More people are striving to look their best without pain and recovery time. Sounds good to us. Marbella Rocks has rounded up and tried and tested the best noninvasive cosmetic procedures on the Costa del Sol to give you an idea of what to expect from these increasingly popular treatments.

QMax Marbella’s laser has a fourpronged approach: helping to rejuvenate, clear uneven skin tone, remove pigmentation marks whilst even giving light hair removal.

However because of the hotter Marbella climate, the laser Sara uses is not as strong as some of the more damaging lasers on the market these days, which leave patients unable to leave home for several days due to recovery and downtime.

“It helps to rejuvenate the skin by attacking collagen, once the collagen is attacked the body defends itself by producing more,” explains QMax Marbella director Sara Sadie. “The laser bypasses the skin so no surface damage is done but more collagen is produced making your skin look bright, fresh and rejuvenated.”

The hair removal side of the treatment is mild but does work for patients that have excess hair problems. “No two patient is the same so it totally depends on the individual but the laser has proven to help remove unwanted hair in the majority of users,” Sara adds.

QMAX Laser

Many potential clients could be put off by the mere mention of the word laser but there is no damage to the skin with this treatment, only a slight redness in some patients, which wears off quickly. It is also not a painful procedure, you feel like your face is being pinged with tiny, hot elastic bands. Some patients may find it uncomfortable but after the 30-minute zapping my skin looked

brighter, fresher and dare I say younger. Sara recommends a course of treatments, once every three weeks but suggests it is good to give your skin a break in the hotter summer months when the sun damage to recently lasered skin is not generally advised. Not only does the laser rejuvenate but QMax claims to clear pigmentation and sun damage because it has highenergy single pulse technology which is vastly more efficient at removing pigmentation marks than multipurpose lasers.

The QMax laser procedure is ideal for women and men (lets not be sexist here!) aged 25-60 as apparently the skin’s natural collagen rebuilding process starts to breakdown at 25. Contact: Sara at QMax Laser +34 628 936 396

This is not just a mere facial. The combination of pressurised oxygen and a special form of hyaluronic acid creates a visible plumped up result you can instantly see and feel. Favoured by Hollywood A-listers Jessica Biel, Kim Kardashian and reportedly all the Victoria Secret

Vitamin A, C, E, antioxidents, aloe vera and green tea which is great for pigmented skins. There are also six different types of serum on the market, for different skin types in various prices. Models (an Oxygen facial team are on hand at all their major catwalk shows). Madonna has even bought the $10,000 system for her home. The procedure begins with a full analysis by Sofia at the Pure Skin Beauty Rooms. She cleanses, tones and massages the skin before doing a 10-minute steam so a completely fresh face is ready for the treatment. A special serum is put into the Intraceuticals gun and sprayed or ‘infused’ onto the skin. The treatment feels cool and refreshing, almost like a fine mist being sprayed onto your face. I have to say this treatment feels fresh and results are noticeable after just one blast of the Intraceuticals special infusion gun. I went out that evening and got complemented on my fresh face. Job done, I think i’m a convert. Sofia recommends a course of six, preferably once a week for six weeks as she calls it a “cure” for the skin. As well as the key plumping ingredient Hyaluronic acid, the serum contains

Oxygen facials have the most noticeable results on those in their thirties and forties, although the treatment is recommended for 25 to 60 year olds. This is also a great treatment to have before any sort of laser treatment as it soothes the skin and reduces any potential redness caused by the heat from the laser. Contact: Sofia at Pure Skin +34 951 134 983

CACI Treatment Favoured by celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Lisa Snowden and Martine McCutcheon, this revolutionary treatment was first used 20 years ago to treat stressrelated patients as the machine’s tiny micro-currents lifted and toned sagging facial muscles. After continued use doctors realised that the CACI system also softened fine lines and wrinkles.

72 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 01

Fast-forward to 2014 and the system has been updated to repair the skin using red and blue light resulting in the skin’s collagen plumped so the depth of wrinkles is reduced. While so many women are opting for more drastic invasive surgery like botox, fillers and facelifts, CACI promises to deliver ‘a non-surgical facelift’. The new CACI Ultimate treatment also incorporates a microdermabrasion element to smooth and revitalise the texture of your skin and pigmentation marks are also dramatically reduced. When it came to treatment day I have to admit I was a little bit nervous about the electrical pulses. But Katie was completely professional and reassured she would use a low setting. Using what looked like two metal rods, Katie worked around the eye area first, holding and lifting each area. It felt strange but not uncomfortable. Lastly I loved the mask. It was full of hyaluronic acid and collagen and intensively moisturises and calms the skin. Katie then used a roller like motion to massage in the moisture. The system does come with a hefty price tag though. Beauty specialists recommend a course of 10 treatments which comes in just under €500. Plus, CACI have recently launched a 20-minute ‘Ultimate Lip Plump’ treatment to combat the Pack a Day Pout, the telltale signs smokers suffer from continued pursing of the lips from inhaling cigarettes. The new €25 treatment claims to work by resurfacing the damaged lip area and using a patented wrinkle comb technology. Contact: Katie Lee on +34 660 444 005

The reason why these procedures are on the rise can be attributed to the backlash against the plumped up look of fillers and sagging eyes caused by botox. Added to this the PIP breast implant scare of 2012 has caused many women to start looking at procedures that make you naturally taut and glowing. The defined cheekbones of Yasmin Le Bon and Gwyneth Paltrow are the order of the day not the puffy faced look of yesteryear. Plus Sadie From QMax, who has been in the beauty business for 30 years reveals that even botox fans are questioning the longevity of the needle. “Botox is a quick fix, you start to pay the price after 15 years,” she warns.

When testing always try on your forehead as well as jawline as most women tend to be darker there, if it blends into your forehead as well as it does on your face, then that is your shade.

2 If your complexion is looking full apply a light reflective highlighter on all the high points of the face. (Brow bone, cheek bone, cupids arrow) for an instant illuminating effect. The best you can try is Yves Saint Laurent Touché Eclat or Benefits high-beam.

3 For thicker looking lashes simply dust a little loose powder over them before applying mascara. A trick I always use.

4 Always use a pencil or wax to create your shape, then fill them in with a powder. I recommend Benefit browzings.

P

iloxing is quickly becoming a global fitness phenomenon with celebrity devotees including Kelly Osbourne, Ashley Tissdale and Vanessa Hudgens. It is the first program that blends the muscle sculpting of pilates, the strengthening and cardio of boxing and the fun and sensuality of dance into a high-energy interval workout. Piloxing has taken the US by storm and is now gaining a huge following in the Costa del Sol with classes in Marbella, Calahonda, Sotogrande and Gibraltar. If last year’s fitness craze was Zumba this year’s is definitely Piloxing. There are now 36 countries with certified training academies with numbers set to hit triple figures by the end of the year. Weighted gloves are worn to work the muscles further and all the moves are performed in time with a pumping music soundtrack, which helps to keep you moving and motivated. The classes aren’t for the faint hearted though as the interval training is at 145 beats per minute. It means you’ll be working out intensively for 60 minutes but you burn up to 900 calories in that session alone. Not bad going and reportedly twice as effective as spinning classes for shifting those stubborn pounds. Piloxing classes have been described by attendees as “a fast, exhilarating and full-on workout,” Kelly Osbourne is sweaty but sold, adding, “Piloxing is an amazing, full-body workout, and its good, dancey fun.” Lisa Greenwood, a certified Piloxing instructor, who runs classes at DanceWorks and the Almenara Hotel in Sotogrande, believes

HEALTH & FITNESS the reason why the take-up has been so high is because it appeals to everyone. “You don’t necessarily have to have coordination to do piloxing and it is highintensity but low impact so good for everyone, from the superfit to the 70.” After only six weeks of classes people notice increased muscle tone in their arms, legs and core. “Piloxing builds strength but does not give you bulky muscles because you are lengthening and stretching,” Lisa says. Hollywood trainer and founder of Piloxing, Viveca Jensen has come up with a motto for her unique workout concept to empower the women that do it, ‘Sleek, Sexy and Powerful’. Which in turn neatly sums up this Swedishborn classically trained dancer’s newly amassed fortune. Her Piloxing DVD is already an international bestseller and her latest release, The Piloxing System, has been named one of the Top 10 workout DVD’s for 2014 by Fitness Magazine.

PILOXING AT HOME We’ve got six easy, gym-free moves from Jensen as shown here by fully-certified instructor Lisa Greenwood.

Countertop push-ups:
Stand on toes two feet from a counter. Place hands on countertop, and lower down and back up, keeping elbows close to the body. Work up to 3 sets of 20 reps. Bicep curl:
Reach arms out in front at shoulder height, with open palms facing up. Bend elbows to 90-degree angles, keeping hands open. Slowly lower to starting position. Do 2 sets of 30 reps. Speed bag:
Bend knees slightly, tighten core muscles, and bend elbows at chest level with clenched fists facing each other. Circle fists rapidly, as if hitting a speed bag, for 3 sets of 30 seconds. Rest 10 seconds between sets.

Laughing is one of the best exercises for your core When we first heard about piloxing in the Marbella Rocks office we laughed at the mere mention of pairing activities. Whatever next Pi-latte (pilates and drinking coffee) Pil-ayaking (pilates and kayaking). Can you think of the best exercise or activity combination? Tweet us your suggestions on @Marbella_Rocks to win a dinner for 2 at a top restaurant in Marbella.

Tricep squeeze:
With feet hip-distance apart and knees slightly bent, lean forward to create a flat back. Pump arms back toward each other, palms facing in, keeping arms tight and straight. Do 3 sets, 30 seconds each, resting for 10 seconds between sets. Arm spins:
Stand with arms reaching out to the sides. Circle arms forward, keeping elbows straight and muscles tight and flexed, for 30 reps, and then do 30 reps circling backward. Do 3 sets. Upper cut:
Create a strong (fighting) stance with feet staggered and knees slightly bent, keeping core muscles tight. Punch the right fist out to the left, then left fist to the right, alternating fists for 3 sets of 30 seconds each. Rest for 10 seconds in between sets.

HEALTH & FITNESS

THE

5:2 DIET

A

nother week another new diet. We’ve had Atkins, South Beach, Juicing, raw food diet, even Cabbage soup diet had a particularly long lifespan considering how crazy and anti-social it was.

But what’s drastically different about the 5:2 diet is that it has actually been proven to be good for you. You eat what you like on 5 days of the week then reduce your calorie intake for the other two days a week. Men cut down to 600 calories while women are allowed 500. The science behind why the 5:2 is good for you actually makes sense. In our modern lifestyle we are used to eating what we want, when we want and our bodies have become unused to being in starvation or ‘repair’ mode as the 5:2 diet calls it. When we do go into repair mode it causes our body to restore damaged cells,

in turn using more energy to help us lose weight. The results of the 5:2 are pretty dramatic. You can lose between 2 and 4lbs in weeks one and two, then between 1 and 3lbs a week between weeks three to six. The one main rule of the diet is not to take two fasting days together, always have a break. When a desired weight is achieved users are advised to scale back to the ‘maintenance programme’ that requires them to only fast on one day a week. This way fans of the 5:2 are not best pleased with the wording diet as they believe its more of a way of life and people do tend to think of diets as pointless and faddy. Research suggests that fasting in this way can help us to live longer and even ward off serious illness such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Further studies have shown that fasting can help us to reduce levels of insulin, which leads to accelerated ageing as well as reducing blood pressure and cholesterol. Another factor why 5:2 is being hailed as a revolutionary new eating plan is that individuals report on

their non-fast days that they have a sense of control over what they eat, hardly ever eat out of boredom and tend to choose healthier foods. Plus if you are a busy person you can change your fast day so you can enjoy a meal out or the occasional glass of wine at the weekend, something conventional diets don’t let you do. Sounds too good to be true. Well it is isn’t actually….but be warned its tough. Having just managed to lose 6lbs in four weeks on the 5:2 diet, I would definitely recommend it. Although I would suggest keeping your fridge pretty empty on fasting days to avoid snacking as 500 calories doesn’t go very far. There are 550 calories in just one medium bar of chocolate. A pizza has 800 calories. You see the problem… The best suggestion is to plan your fast days very well. To keep under the 500 calorie threshold you must be very careful about what you eat.

Here are a couple of meal plans for the fast days to help you out: Breakfast

Dinner

One slice of brown toast & poached egg 160 calories 50g Porridge with skimmed milk and raisins 175 calories Fruit platter (banana, strawberry and kiwi) 130 calories

Chicken breast & steamed vegetables 200 calories Poached salmon and brown rice 220 calories Vegetable risotto 210 calories

Lunch Tuna salad 140 calories Cream cheese and salmon on wheat crackers 180 calories Tomato Soup 155 calories

78 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 01

And try and be healthy with your non-fast days and the 5:2 diet recommends thirty minutes of light cardiovascular exercise two or three times a week.

EAT, SLEEP & DRINK While some local restaurants have come and gone in Marbella, Regina’s has standed the test of time due to their commitment and passion for great food and unwavering customer service. You are greeted with a smile and chat on arrival and looked after from start to finish. The restaurant regularly accommodates large groups for parties but if you want to go for a more quiet, romantic meal just check what’s happening that night or book an earlier sitting. The party atmosphere really kicks in at 10.30pm on their busier band nights. If you want to attend a live music night double check before booking but in peak summer you’re guaranteed an entertaining night. If you wanted to stop in for a pre-dinner cocktail or drink, Regina’s has just launched their R Bar for cocktails and for pre or post dinner drinks. In addition, Regina’s is planning to show some of the World Cup matches in their newly refurbished conservatory at the back of the restaurant. The restaurant is open seven days a week. For lunch, Monday to Friday from 12pm until 4pm and for traditional Sunday lunch from 1pm until 5pm, and for dinner Monday to Saturday from 7.30pm until midnight. Whilst not expensive in Marbella terms, a starter, main course, dessert and wine for 2 people will set you back €100-€150 .

S

unborn, the new five star floating hotel, is finally opening its doors to the public in June and making waves throughout Spain and Gibraltar with its presence.

The new hotel is an impressive seven storeys, 15,500 square of floor space and dwarfs the other super yachts in the marina. There are 189 rooms, a mixture of executive suites, suites and high-specification guest rooms. Walking into the Sunborn is truly breathtaking. There’s a sweeping red carpet entrance leading into a glamorous foyer and the boat’s soon to be appointed Michelin star Pearl Spa and Linen Restaurant. There is also a casino, cocktail lounge, swimming pool, spa, gym, ballroom, conference and banqueting rooms. A main focal point of the yacht is the top deck with its Sky Restaurant and Bar, which has a retractable roof and concertina glass doors, allowing for alfresco dining all year round or parties under the stars. It is docked on a permanent basis by 6-strong hydraulic arms in the Ocean Village Marina and has stunning views overlooking Morocco and the Rock and Bay of Gibraltar. On clear days North Africa can be seen from the hotel. 90% of the rooms have outdoor areas and all the windows are floor to ceiling glass.

The Sunborn was developed by a team of architects, designers and marine specialists from more than 15 countries and cost its Finish developers €150m. The super yacht hotel is expected to attract a mixture of celebrities, business people and holidaymakers. According to its Gibraltarian manager, “various football teams, singers and even Rihanna, has enquired about staying here. Interestingly enough one of the hotel’s unique selling points is the fact that it is able to move around when “economic or political conditions become unsteady.” Hopefully this will not be the case with Gibraltar! A further plus point for Sunborn is it can be docked in protected locations, either historically or environmentally, as no permanent footprint is left upon removal. At present the Sunborn London is due to open in Royal Victoria Dock, with further floating hotels planned for Barcelona and projects under development in North America, South East Asia, the Middle East and Russia.

RED OR WHITE? IF ANYONE ASKS ME THAT QUESTION ONE MORE TIME I THINK I MIGHT SCREAM? BUT TO BE HONEST, IT WAS THE QUESTION THAT MADE ME GIVE UP MY JOB, START STUDYING TO BECOME A MASTER OF WINE AND TRY AND SAVE US ALL!

T

o introduce myself, I’m The Wine Angel, my wine app was voted number one wine app in the UK for the last three years, the food and wine matching tool will help you choose that perfect grape variety for dinner. I hope this is the first wine column you have started to read and have not fallen asleep yet? This is the problem- we ALL drink wine these days. At home, in restaurants, with friends. But do we actually know what we are drinking, let alone like it? We all want to know more, but haven’t got the time to learn and we certainly don’t want read a wine column where some prehistoric chap is telling us what to uncork with our Sunday roast.

86 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 01

Every month I’ll be here shedding some light on what people perceive to be the scary world of wine! You can learn about grape varieties, and discover your very own palate through choosing and tasting based upon your new-found knowledge. My aim within a few months is to give you the confidence to decide what you like, what you want to drink and how much you want to spend. You will be ripping that wine list off your partner to choose that perfect wine for dinner and you won’t be wandering around the wine aisle like a headless chicken anymore! Also, each month I will be recommending a wine to complement our Marbella Rocks ‘Chill In’ recipe. Wine and Food matching is a speciality of mine, and it really is a great way to understand why and how we can complement a meal with our chosen wine. Food and wine matching is great fun! There are general rules, but a good tip to remember if you get stuck choosing, is that wines were originally made locally to reflect their particular region’s/country’s cuisine. The food’s provenance will match with the wines of the land. So, choose a wine to complement the dish’s origin e.g. full bodied, highly tannic Spanish Rioja with their inland, rustic cuisine of stews. Another example is high acid red wines e.g. Chianti, which matches perfectly with high acid, tomato-based Italian foods, such as Bolognese. Also cooking methods can influence the best style of wine to choose. So with steamed food, you should try and drink a lighter wine, otherwise the delicacy of the food will be destroyed. General food and wine matching rules are to match sweet wine with sweet food, acidic wine with acidic or salty food, spicy wine with spicy food, red wine with red meat and white wine with white, although this traditional rule can often be relaxed. Wine Angel is all about educating you to choose, and to have the confidence to drink what you wish.

TARIFA

You wind along the twisting highway, the Mediterranean to your left and the numerous, looming silent sentinels that make up the area’s windfarms to your right. The African coastline appears so close you can almost smell the spices drifting over from the street bazaars of Morocco.

You know now that you are only a few miles from one of the most remarkable places in all of Europe.

I

f you park up in the Old Town you can explore the maze of narrow cobbled streets that characterise this beautiful seaside town. You can take a visit to the old castle and let your imagination wander back a couple of centuries to the ferocious battles that took place here. But if are in town to check out just why so many people visit the “Wind capital of Europe”, then you’ll go straight to one of the golden beaches of Tarifa.

ISSUE 01 | MARBELLAROCKS

87

EXPLORE Renowned for its wind-surfing and kite-surfing, hippies and bohemian atmosphere, Tarifa is an alternative hotspot on Spain’s southern coast. Its clear blue waters are where the Atlantic Ocean merges with the Mediterranean Sea and where water-sports enthusiasts from all over the globe meet to take advantage of its high winds and perfect surfing conditions. So close is it to the African continent that you can actually see houses and cars in neighbouring Morocco. From sunrise to sunset, Tarifa’s beaches are a haven for surfers, hippies and sunworshippers. Even after sundown the beaches are a hive of activity, with beach parties keeping the party going into the early hours and even into the

following afternoon. The people here are friendly. Both visitors and locals alike always have broad smiles on their faces and many a traveller may find themselves being treated like a long-lost friend by complete strangers. And this is what helps make Tarifa the unique place it is: a place where there is no snobbery and where everyone is equal and welcome. Up until around 35 years ago, Tarifa was a very different place. The strong coastal winds of the small fishing village – regarded as a curse for centuries – were the bane of the Tarifenos lives. Sand storms and the constant billeting from the wind

88 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 01

is said to have been the reason for Tarifa having the highest suicide rate in all of Spain. But it was these very winds that were to turn around the fortunes of Tarifa. Word spread among the then small worldwide surfing community about a town in southern Spain that had waves akin to those of Hawaii, the surfers Mecca. They began to descend on Tarifa, bringing their laid-back attitudes and friendly ways with them. Word again spread, and soon the beaches were filled with surfers, wind-surfers, bikers and hippies all enjoying the sunshine and waves. Since kitesurfing took off a number of years ago, Tarifa has become one of the most visited spots worldwide for this relatively new sporting discipline.

EXPLORE Tarifa is also the gateway to the Costa de la Luz and was once the most important shipping route between Africa and Europe. Its proximity to Africa made it a much fought over site and Tarifa has been controlled by many different powers since it was given its name in 710 when Muslim leader Tarif Ben Malluk landed there. Visitors are drawn to Tarifa not just for the watersports but also for the rich history that is still evident in the town. The Old Town is surrounded by medieaval gates and walls, and the castle looking out over the African coastline is the oldest surviving castle in all of Spain. Nowadays, Tarifa is a far more cosmopolitan place that it used to be.

There is the bustle and buzz of bars, cafes, seafood restaurants, market places and laid-back chiringuitos. All sorts of unusual clothing, jewellery and craftwork can be picked up in one of Tarifa’s many small stores littered around the Old Town, and hip vegetarian cafes serve up refreshing alternatives for the more environmentally-minded visitor. What really makes Tarifa the bohemian and alternative place it is are the people. The town has an enviable international feel to it. Like-minded Spaniards, Italians, Dutch, Swedes, Germans, Africans and South Americans among many others come together in Tarifa. And during the summer months Tarifa

is definitely the “in” place to be on the coast. Make-shift parties and summer chill-outs are the norm on the beaches, and the town is the place where people can – among other things – watch a roof-top movie projected onto a whitewashed wall, have dinner while watching a meteor shower or take part in a roadside game of volleyball. It’s a relaxed and friendly place and as the southernmost point on the European continent, Tarifa is a dream destination not just for the bohemian crowd, but for those seeking a stress-free break in one of the most beautiful spots in all of Spain.

ART’SSAKE T

NEWS AND INFORMATION FROM THE LOCAL AND GLOBAL ARTS SCENE here is something about this area that attracts people who are passionate about art, whether they are artists themselves or whether they enjoy collecting works to display in their homes. Is it the brilliant sun fused light, or is it the fact that

Marbella is a meeting point for like-minded souls with a creative spirit?

AUTHOR: JO WARD

Surrounding ourselves with things that are aesthetically pleasing is important and there is a thriving arts’ scene along the coast here that will quench the thirst of any art hungry lover. Marbella abounds with galleries exhibiting works by world-famous artists as well as showcasing emerging talent. If you are looking to purchase then you’re sure to find something to suit your taste and pocket. If you just want to browse or see what’s out there before you commit to buying something, Marbella is the place to go. Local sculptors, painters and photographers display their art at the many festivals and exhibitions held in different locations ranging from their own studios, houses and gardens to some of the organised events that bring together craftspeople from all over the world.

SENSATIONAL ‘NEW MEDIA’ ARTIST

JOSEPH KLIBANSKY “I see my art as a way to portray the 21st century accompanied with a subtle vision of the future”

Born in Cape Town in 1988, Joseph Klibansky quickly made a name for himself on the international art scene with his ‘new media’ digital images. Klibansky makes largescale, idealistic utopian portraits that are built up through hundreds of layers of photography enriched with acrylic paint on archival cotton paper overlaid with a liquid resin. Neon Jungle is one of Klibansky’s latest digital paintings. It is a continuation of his New Urban Jungle theme that has formed a thread throughout his career since 2008 and there are similarities with his 2010 work ‘High Flyers’, which caused a stir in the art world when it went for a record price of 34.500 Euros at Sotheby’s. To see more of Joseph Klibansky’s work, including some of his new ‘3D’ art, visit The Red Penguin Gallery in Marbella, the first independent art gallery housed within an El Corte Inglés store. This dynamic gallery acts as a creative platform for artists from around the world, featuring a diverse array of design and contemporary artworks. www.redpenguinartgallery.com

ARTIST PROFILE Born in the USSR, Yul Hanchas came to Spain in 2011 and loved it so much he has made it his home. Yul is not just an artist but he combines his talent with a showmanship that has led to him exhibiting his unique work in galleries around the world. Between1992-2002, in Israel, he had his own stained glass and art-forging studio but always continued working with oil, mixing and finding different styles until he invented his own technique – volumetric pop art.

Q&A WITH YUL HANCHAS Spain obviously enticed you to live and work here. What was it particularly about the area surrounding Marbella that you fell in love with? The lack of traffic! I came here from Moscow and it is a luxury not to have to waste hours in traffic. Sunny days, siestas… I just love it all, especially the Mediterranean colours which have added a new dimension of bright tones to my paintings.

You say you had an ‘art-forging’ studio. Can you explain this? Presumably you don’t mean a studio for art forgery!

I finished art school and then had a great opportunity to learn more about art at my father’s workshops. He was an honoured artist and sculptor and many well-known artists, sculptors, restorers and wood carvers worked under his direction. They, in turn, became my teachers. I spent my entire childhood watching nude models and after school I helped to cut and paste coloured glass. At the same time I was studying stained glass techniques and learning about hand forging with iron and bronze. When I was 15 I got my first job and worked with my father beautifying different towns of Sakhalin in the Far East of Russia with bronze monuments and forged art objects. In Israel some years later we had our own

HOME & INTERIORS stained glass and art-forging studio and, after an exhibition in Tel-Aviv in 1995, the name Hanchas became a brand known for setting standards of elegance and quality.

What is volumetric pop art?

Well, pop art was already an existing style but what I did was to add volume to it. In two words - it’s a sculpture on canvas with inlaid pearls and stones which makes the artwork very shiny and decorative. Each one is unique.

Some of your work features images of famous and iconic celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe. Which of these has been your favourite? Every painting is my favourite because I only do portraits of celebrities I admire. But the one that I really love now is of Montserrat Caballé, not forgetting the Dalí of course!

Are there any other techniques you would like to explore or places you would like to live that would inspire you further?

Who knows what will happen in the future but I will definitely keep working and experimenting. Here in Spain I have created another new style in oil which I have called Colortherapy. At the moment I am working in wood and creating a brand new collection that I will exhibit at the Museo Picasso in Málaga later this year. However, it goes without saying that I would love to work again with iron and bronze.

Where do you see your art journey going in the future? My surname Hanchas comes from my Greek grandfather. In Andalusian it sounds like ‘ancha’, meaning wide. Wide soul – wide opportunities! Let’s see where it takes me!

PHOTOGRAPH OR DRAWING?

‘I CAN MAKE YOU FAMOUS!!’

This amazing pencil drawing of an old man by talented 16 year old schoolgirl Shania McDonagh from County Mayo in Ireland has won the €1,500 first prize in her age group in the Texaco Children’s Art Competition. The pencil study entitled ‘Coleman’ is so realistic that it is hard to distinguish whether it is a drawing or photograph. However, Shania is no stranger to the competition as this is the fourth year in succession she has won the top prize in her category. Shania fought off competition from thousands of young students from across Ireland who took part in the Competition. A glittering future is assured!

Thought at first to be by Banksy, this wall art that appeared in Battersea portraying Max Clifford is not by the world renowned Bristol based graffiti artist, but was in fact created by fellow street artist T.Wat whose work always includes some social commentary. The large image shows Marbella home owner Clifford, recently jailed for eight years for sex crimes, standing in a suit, trousers around his ankles and with his pants down. ASTROLOGY

MARBELLA ROCKS ASTROLOGY FORECAST JUNE 2014

Aries

Gemini

Leo

Mercury is in your home sector from the 7th bringing chaos. Put off signing leases, loans and mortgages to next month if you can. The full Moon of the 13th is known as the flower Moon and asks if you need to blossom or flower on a larger stage? The Sun moves into your 4th house of home and family from the 21st while Venus brings journeys that could end in lover’s meeting, messages of love or just turning up the dial on your flirtation frequency. Fine tune your signals and you could end up attracting someone who totally gets your message. Remember don’t just talk a good game - when it comes to love - bring it as well!

Revise your values and self-worth ahead of major romance-triggering moves made by Venus arriving in your sign. Do you dream of the perfect lover but deep down believe you’re not worthy or if they turned up they’re out of your league? Time to look closely at what prevents you from receiving love and success. One or both could be yours now as the universe wants to say yes to you on some level. But if you’re intent on saying no to yourself - whether it’s on a personal or professional level then you’ll continue to believe dreams can’t and don’t come true.

Your social life could take you anywhere from the red carpet to a flying one this week. It’s more about being seen and having fun than oneto-one encounters now but wait a while and that will change. Chances are celebrations form a big theme as well now as you make all the right moves or get noticed by all the right people when it comes to your career with kudos and rewards to follow. I’m not saying you won’t enjoy the odd flirtation but chances are anything romantic that begins now ends up with you saying ‘We’re just good friends’ and mean it.

Taurus

Cancer

Virgo

Ruler Venus could deliver bank account boosting news this month but you may spend any extra as fast as it comes in. This could even be money owed to you from the past. Spending it is okay so long as you don’t spend more than you have. An arrangement you have with someone else especially if it involves finances may be up for review around the full Moon but don’t panic. You can afford to come from a place of power as an unexpected opportunity to fulfil a long held desire or goal could suddenly present itself and you’re off to bigger and better things.

Pay attention if someone from your past reappears as the past could represent a trap for you. News could bring goals closer and take dreams out of the pipeline but to make them reality, understand you have to take action on the inspired ideas the universe is sending you now but they are still in the planning stage. In the interim while you plan your next move why not just enjoy being you and your connection to others because people will be more than happy to celebrate who you are now, and how far you’ve come, and have yet to go.

Ruler Mercury is in your house of friends, connections and goals. Take care of your image (and that includes who you are seen with) as influential people are taking note. If you have been thinking it’s time to invest more in yourself this will pay off perhaps in ways you don’t yet realise. Singles could attract someone where there is an age difference between you and/ or extremely successful or would be considered a ‘catch’. Now you’ve snagged their interest, what do you intend to do? Age is only a number and success is self-defined - as you are about to discover.

Libra

Sagittarius

Aquarius

Ruler Venus heads out into your area of adventures via love this month. Love could come in the form of someone from far away or be bigger than you dreamed possible and if travelling, then journeys really could end in lover’s meeting - or be sitting right next to you on the beach. That lucky career break could be yours. It’s all about preparing to receive the rewards of hard work or reaching that career goal you’ve been aiming for. Success personally and professionally could be yours this month. Now you know, let nothing else stand in your way.

It’s all about you and those close to you this month as a full Moon in your sign asks you to acknowledge that procrastination is not the way to go. A decision awaits and please don’t forget, when Venus slides into your partnership zone from the 23rd this also rules business and collaborative partners with your closest friends as well as romantic partners. So, what am I saying here? You are heading into one of the best periods of the year for smoothing over any problems with you and your honey and singles could just connect with that special someone with the promise of long term potential.

The first half of the month work demands your attention and you may even feel you’re jumping through the same hoops you cleared before except this time they’re on fire. Just when you think you can’t take the heat any longer a different kind of fire ignites your world as passion, romance or even a chance to shine comes your way thanks to Venus in your sector of attraction and love. If you’ve been waiting to hear from a potential lover - or if you met someone intriguing and then they just seemed to drop off the radar stand by as they may reappear.

Scorpio

Capricorn

Pisces

You could be looking at a makeor-break moment when it comes to romance this month. For one thing you crave that deeper, more meaningful connection where it’s your soul as well as the bed that gets rocked. You’ll be asking yourself if your current amour can provide that - or perhaps seeing a lover for who they truly are now. Is that a prince (or princess) or just another frog after all? Your problem being you tend to see the best in everyone then get disappointed if they can’t live up to their potential. Take heart if your romantic reality check reveals yet another frog.

With the Sun, new Moon and Mercury retrograde in your 7th of long term lovers, you could be looking at a fresh start with a former flame. Will it burn as hot the second time around, or just plain fizzle out? For some time you’ve been going through profound changes on an inner level and this extends to what you are seeking in terms of love- so if you’ve changed you need to ask yourself if they have changed also. Otherwise you’re just hitting the replay button and the same outcome so don’t déjà vu. Blockages to career progress vanish and keep your eye on long term goals but don’t forget to pay attention to the small stuff.

Ruler Neptune in your sign this month allows you to see a situation for exactly what it is and also showing you that your intuition has been right all along. You may have the satisfaction this month of instinctively knowing what is going to happen before hand - and being able to say ‘I told you so!’ afterwards. Home and family matters could require your attention and if you don’t like where you are living then don’t just talk about moving - start to take steps to do it but if you are happy with where you are then commit to being there.

e all know beauty is considered a commodity in our society. The problem is beauty fades and if it’s all you have going for you then there will be struggle. But one woman didn’t seem to get this memo. We all know women who are out there gold digging but rarely do we find women so blatant about their hunt. This woman went to a forum seeking a rich husband and got slightly more than she bargained for. What should I do to marry a rich guy? I’m going to be honest of what I’m going to say here. I’m 25 this year. I’m very pretty, have style and good taste. I wish to marry a guy with $500k annual salary or above. You might say that I’m greedy, but an annual salary of $1M is considered only as middle class in New York. My requirement is not high. Is there anyone in this forum who has an income of $500k annual salary? Are you all married? I wanted to ask: what should I do to marry rich persons like you?

108 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 01

Among those I’ve dated, the richest is $250k annual income, and it seems that this is my upper limit. If someone is going to move into high cost residential area on the west of New York City Garden, a $250k annual income is not enough. I’m here humbly to ask a few questions: 1) Where do most rich bachelors hang out? 2) Which age group should I target? 3) Why most wives of the riches are only averagelooking? I’ve met a few girls who don’t have looks and are not interesting, but they are able to marry rich guys. 4) How do you decide who can be your wife, and who can only be your girlfriend? (my target now is to get married) Ms. Pretty In the Internet posting the article alleges the CEO of JP Morgan replies:

Dear Ms. Pretty, I have read your post with great interest. Guess there are lots of girls out there who have similar questions like yours. Please allow me to analyse your situation as a professional investor.
My annual income is more than $500k, which meets your requirement, so I hope everyone believes that I’m not wasting time here.
From the standpoint of a business person, it is a bad decision to marry you. The answer is very simple, so let me explain. Put the details aside, what you’re trying to do is an exchange of “beauty” and “money”: Person A provides beauty, and Person B pays for it, fair and square.
However, there’s a deadly problem here, your beauty will fade, but my money will not be gone without any good reason. The fact is, my income might increase from year to year, but you can’t be prettier year after year. Hence from the viewpoint of economics, I am an appreciation asset, and you are a depreciation asset. It’s not just normal depreciation, but exponential depreciation. If that is your only asset, your value will be much worse 10 years later. By the terms we use in Wall Street, every trading has a position, dating with you is also a “trading position”. If the trade value dropped we will sell it and it is not a good idea to keep it for long term – same goes with the marriage that you wanted. It might be cruel to say this, but in order to make a wiser decision any assets with great depreciation value will be sold or “leased”. Anyone with over $500k annual income is not a fool; we would only date you, but will not marry you. I would advice that you forget looking for any clues to marry a rich guy. And by the way, you could make yourself to become a rich person with $500k annual income. This has better chance than finding a rich fool.

ccording to reports, this image of a Rubik’s Cube was painted by an artist whilst staying at his friends’ villa in Ibiza. The group went out for a crazy, hedonistic night at a club when one of the prankster’s friends snuck in and painted this to freak them out on their return.

Good wind up or waste of time let us know your thoughts @Marbella_Rocks. Have you got any friend wind ups you’d like to share with Marbella Rocks, if so get in touch at info@marbellarocksmag.com to WIN Dinner and Drinks at a top Marbella restaurant.

Hope this reply helps. Signed,
