NEWS

CELEBRITIES EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT Kim Kardashian, Hayden Panettiere, Vanessa Hudgens and Amber Heard are the latest stars embroiled in the largest celebrity hacking scandal in history. In what will surely annoy newlywed rapper Kanye, self-shot images of Kim are being shared on online message board 4chan, Reddit and Twitter. It is not apparent when the pictures were taken although Kim is not seen wearing her wedding ring. ‘Nashville’ actress Hayden Panettiere is said to be pictured both nude and in provocative underwear in a series of stolen pictures, again via 4chan and Reddit. All pictures have since been removed. This is the third time poor Vanessa Hudgens has fallen prey to a nude photo scandal. Hudgens, a former Disney star, also had pictures leaked in both 2007 and 2009. Although some are hinting that this could just be a publicity stunt, or can someone be this unlucky or stupid?! Johnny Depp’s fiancé Amber Heard has had 50 plus photos leaked. Many of her are topless and one has an intimate message to her ‘Lone Ranger’ fiancé, where she calls him “Beloved Tonto Man.” Actress Jennifer Lawrence was the first star to be hacked last month. While many of the original links have now been taken down more appear to be coming in – taking the total number of nude and partially nude

shots of ‘The Hunger Games’ actress to 60. Hundreds more celebrities have been targeted in this ongoing hacking scandal including model Kate Upton, actresses Kirsten Dunst, Mary Kate Olsen and Selena Gomez. Rihanna has also been a target. Interestingly and as some news reports saying “unfairly”, there have been no nude pictures of male stars released. Yet. The FBI and Apple are both conducting investigations into the widespread invasion of these personal accounts, thought to be connected to the popular iCloud service.

TOM HARDY OFF THE MARKET ‘Bronson’ actor Tom Hardy has secretly wed his fiancée Charlotte Riley in a low-key wedding in the South of France. The nuptials reportedly took place in an 18th Century Castle called Chateau de Roussan in Provence on July 4. The couple, who have always shun the showbiz spotlight, managed to keep the wedding under wraps for almost 3 months. Only close friends and family were invited to the big day, where Hardy’s six-year-old son by ex-girlfriend Rachel Speed was pageboy. Hardy has been dating actress Charlotte since 2008 when they met on the set of ITV drama ‘Wuthering Heights.’ This is Hardy’s second time down the aisle, having been married to Sarah Ward for 5 years. He blamed drink and drug addiction as the reason for their divorce in 2005. To see more of hot man Hardy, he is joining the cast of hit BBC2 crime drama ‘Peaky Blinders’ this month.

NUDE PHOTOGRAPH SCANDAL

NEWS RUSSELL BRAND & JEMIMA KHAN SPLIT It had always seemed like an unlikely coupling but rumour has it, it’s splitsville for serial lothario Brand and heiress Khan. The pair who had been dating since September last year have not been pictured together for some time and unfriended each other on Twitter last week. However, earlier this year Brand had a lot higher hopes for this relationship. He told Jonathan Ross on his ITV chat show: “I’m going to be really kind in this relationship. I haven’t been out there trying to nail everyone. I’m very, very happy in a relationship that feels very different from anything I’ve experienced before. “I feel like it’s grounded in friendship and a sort of love and it’s all well cool and exciting and stuff.” Brand has been linked to countless women in showbiz including Kate Moss, Geri Haliwell, Holly Madison (not to mention the thousands of other non-celebs – including 4 people on Big Brother) He was also married to pop star Katy Perry for 14 months, his longest-term relationship to date. Khan, now 40, in comparison has been a bit more subdued. She has only been linked to actor Hugh Grant since her 2004 divorce with cricketer Imran Khan, with whom she has two teenage sons.

PLAYBOY PRINCE STRIKES AGAIN Prince Harry’s at it again. Only weeks after his split from Society girl Cressida Bonas, he has been seen vying after Egyptian heiress Enayat Younes in none other than Sotogrande, 30 minutes from Marbella. The pair, who were holidaying separately with family and friends (Harry was with his cousins Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice) bumped into each other at popular nightspot The Hairy Lemon in Sotogrande Marina and were seen getting friendly. Harry enjoyed a week long vacation here attending the Bulgari Gold Cup polo tournament and obviously enjoying a bit of after polo entertainment,

as we mentioned in August to go to the Hairy Lemon after the Polo! We doubt this is the real thing though, as Harry, who celebrated his 30th birthday last month, has also been spotted on intimate dates with Halo Trust employee Camilla Thurlow. The duo had a brief encounter at mutual friend Guy Pelly’s Mexican-themed Tonteria Club in London. Harry has also recently been romantically linked with PR executive Sarah Hazen, who he met through ex girlfriend Cressida.

THE DEAL IS SEALED – SORRY LADIES! Serial bachelor George Clooney has finally wed his human rights lawyer fiancé Amal Alamuddin in a star-studded wedding in Venice, Italy. Hearts are breaking all over the world. The gorgeous couple tied the knot in the Aman Resort on the Grand Canal, the only 7-star hotel in Venice, on Saturday 27th September. The bride wore a stunning Alexander McQueen gown while Clooney opted for an Emporio Armani suit. Among the 150 guests were Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon, Cindy Crawford, Bono, Lana Del Ray and US Vogue Editor Anna Wintour. Amal’s parents reportedly footed the bill and vintage tequila was the most popular drink of the day, say our sources!

REEVA’S PARENTS REFUTE CHARGES Oscar Pistorius was found guilty of ‘culpable homicide’ in the shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Reeva’s parents, Barry and June Steenkamp, have insisted the result was “not the right verdict.” Pistorius ascertains he thought Steenkamp was an intruder when he opened fire on her through a toilet door on Valentine’s Day last year, killing her with 4 gun shot wounds. “He could have gone to the balcony and shouted for help knowing that somebody was there. He could have pressed the alarm system and all this would have been prevented,” Barry said. “I feel that there’s still a missing link somewhere. I think there’s quite a bit more to the whole thing than has been produced so far.” Double amputee Olympian Pistorius was charged with culpable homicide on September 12 in South Africa and will return to court on October 13 to be sentenced.

FOR HIM APPLE TECH SPECIAL

iPHONE 6 UNVEILED

A

pple unveiled their new iPhone 6 at a packed press launch in California last month. But will it be packing the punches of its predecessors and have everyone running out to upgrade their current iPhone 5.5’s? The undoubted benefits of the iPhone 6 is its larger screen size, mirroring the popular Samsung S5. It comes in two sizes; the standard iPhone 6 is 138.1mm and iPhone 6 Plus is 158.1mm tall. Another interesting style feature is Apple overhauling the squared off design which has been around since the iPhone 4. In comparison the iPhone 6 boasts a much more rounded, slimmer body. The iPhone 6 is also one of the thinnest smartphones in the market. In fact it’s just 6.9mm thin and the iPhone 6 Plus is only slightly larger at 7.1mm thin. Both phones come in the same shades of the iPhone 5S; dark grey and silver, light grey and silver and a muted gold colour. While a lot of praise has been heaped on the new devices, one ongoing complaint is that the slippier handset material could lead to more accidents. Plus, there were rumours that the glass, which is in fact only ion-strengthened glass, would be the more durable sapphire crystal, which it is not. IGN journalist and iPhone tester Rubio’s main reservation was that the increased size of the 6 Plus, meant that you have to resort to using two hands to navigate. “As expected navigating around the iPhone 6 Plus with one hand was just about impossible,” he said. “You’ll almost definitely need to use two hands, or become very familiar with the ‘reachability’ feature.” However on a positive note the larger size means extra space and battery life. Trusted Reviews, added: “We do like that the extra display space of the iPhone 6 Plus and its greater battery life makes it more of a power user device.” There’s nothing more annoying than being an avid apps or video watcher on your iPhone and constantly running out of battery.

Rumors about a protruding rear camera lens were also true. The new iPhone 6 iSight Camera shoots 1080p video and the front facing FaceTime camera is in HD with a new sensor allowing in up to 81% more light. There’s also HDR FaceTime video support ensuring you’re perfectly lit for video linking with your friends. Despite being thinner the iPhone 6 is slightly heavier than the iPhone 5S at 129g. The power and lock key has also been moved from the top of the handset to the right hand side, making it easier to hit during one-handed use. Connectivity is also vastly improved on the iPhone 6 (and 6 Plus) sporting CAT 4 LTE, offering data speeds of up to 150Mbps. It also supports LTE coverage for 20 bands, covering over 200 networks worldwide. The most bands covered by any iPhone.

you connected to your phone so you don’t have to keep reaching in your pocket to check messages, it acts like a mini iPod and could even make payments and be used as a digital key to open your front door. Other apps seen in the Apple Watch include iMessages, Health, Calendar, Weather, Mail, Photos, Camera and Passbook including Apple Pay and Apple Maps for navigation. The smartwatch also takes cues from other fitness trackers with health sensors and apps. The Apple Watch digital crown, commonplace on all traditional watches, replaces the pinch-to-zoom touchscreen used on everything from iPhones to iPads as “this mechanism is too impractical on such a small display,” according to Apple.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will be available in Apple Stores in Spain from 26th September. Prices will start at €675 for a 16GB iPhone 6, rising to €990 for a 128GB iPhone Plus. If you’re planning on an Apple spending spree take a look at the new Apple Watch, touted as Apple’s most exciting gadget launch in years.

WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT THE APPLE WATCH Apple has just launched its first bit of wearable tech. And judging by the responses to this tiny piece of equipment it’s going to be popular as hell. Where many other smartwatches have failed, Apple has made the Apple Watch (note, not iWatch) that bit cleverer. As well as keeping

Therefore rotating the digital crown allows you to zoom into your app selection, your location on Apple Maps and a photo from your gallery among others. Scrolling through dates and times is handled by this knob too. The digital crown also acts as the Apple Watch home button. Apple smartly locks the wristwatch with an antitheft passcode whenever it’s taken off. Apple CEO Tim Cook didn’t go into great detail about the Apple Watch battery life, but he did hint that the smartwatch is designed to be “worn all day” and is “simple to charge at night.” The Apple Watch release date is scheduled to be sometime in early 2015 and at the as yet unknown pricepoint. Expect it to be big bucks though considering its screen and functionality.

NEWS If you’re anything like the Marbella Rocks team to really appreciate your nights out there’s nothing quite like a relaxing night in. Cue DVD, dinner and a good bottle of wine. Here’s a rundown and recipe for a quality night in.

RECIPE

25 MINUTE PAELLA We are lucky enough to live in or frequently visit Spain, and more often than not we’ve never attempted the national dish. Most excuses lean towards being put off by the lengthy cooking time…but it is actually a lot easier than you think. Here is one of the best and easiest ‘Meat & Seafood Paella’ recipes around. Cooking time: 20 minutes Preparation time: 5 minutes Ingredients: (makes paella for 4-6 people) 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion 6 large fresh tomatoes 150g chorizo, diced 500g chicken breast 1 tsp turmeric 400g long grain rice 2 litres fish or chicken stock 250g frozen beans 500g prawns 1. Fry the diced chicken on a medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. While the chicken is cooking grate fresh tomatoes on a cheese grater and finely dice the onion. 3. In a separate paella dish (or large frying pan if you don’t have) heat the oil and add the chorizo and onion and fry until it releases its oils. Stir in the chicken, grated

16 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02 05

tomatoes, turmeric and rice until coated by the oils, then pour in the stock. 4. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 5. Tip in the beans and cook for 5 minutes, then finally stir in the prawns to heat through for a final 3 minutes of cooking or until rice is cooked. 6. Serve immediately with lemon wedges.

FOOD & WINE MATCH

WINE MATCH This Spanish, rice-based recipe inspires memories of fiestas. So, what to drink when celebrating and sharing the meal of seafood, chorizo and chicken with friends? This is a great dish for regional matches. You need a white wine

that’s got good crispness to it, either a Spanish Xarel- Lo grape or Albarino. A nice, dry, and crisp Albarino is a perfect match, but you can also buy some much more complex Albarino blends, so look out for them in the Spanish supermarkets. The seafood and chicken would lend you to the white grape choice, however you can go for a dry rosé or even move out of Spain with a French Côtes de Provence Rosé or Loire Poilly-Fumé. A delicious late Summer dish to enjoy with that perfect glass of wine. Time to try something new- Salut!

NEWS DVD RELEASES OF THE MONTH

EDGE OF TOMORROW THE OTHER WOMAN A gripping, science fiction thriller that sees Tom Cruise in the lead as William Cage fighting an alien race that has inhabited earth. While the plotline may sound far-fetched and “an overdone format” by Hollywood standards – ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ is different. Cage is killed off at the beginning of the film when he is dropped on a battlefield into what amounts as a suicide mission. He is stuck in a time-loop that forces him to face the same brutal battle over and over. As each combat mission reoccurs he is learning greater skills, alongside the immensely talented Emily Blunt who plays a Special Forces Officer. Edge of Tomorrow has been praised by critics for its superb writing and direction. Empire called it, “A playful and frantic science-fiction twister which mimics the best (Aliens, The Matrix, Groundhog Day) while offering something fresh and, most importantly, thrilling.” The film, directed by ‘Bourne Identity’s Doug Liman, has generated over $100m at the US box office.

Rocks rating:

A raucous comedy starring seasoned female leads Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann. The story starts with dutiful wife Mann discovering her husband is having an affair with high-flyer Diaz.

Instead of confronting womaniser Mark – played by gorgeous Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the two women plot revenge in a series of hilarious capers that see the smooth operator squirm. The tale takes on another twist as the wronged women, discover a third woman…. buxom Barbie doll Amber, played by Brit model Kate Upton. Without revealing too much the sisterhood exact revenge on Mark. The film directed by ‘The Notebook’s’ Nick Cassavetes doesn’t take itself too seriously (which is how it succeeds) and is full of witty one-liners and contrived plot points. If you were a fan of films like ‘The First Wives Club’ and ‘Sex and the City’ this is definitely one for you. Even SATC’s Patricia Field, was brought in to costume design the three girls in their various guises. Look out for Nicky Minaj making her hilarious and first on-screen role.

BOOK REVIEW

WHITE CROCODILE

While we’ve so far reviewed only best selling authors in this sector, this debut novel from the utterly promising KT Medina is well worthy of making our book review final cut. Medina, speaking from real life experience as a troop commander with the Territorial Army and as a consultant to mine clearance charities in Cambodia, writes a fascinating murder mystery story that both captivates and enthralls. She also manages to combine a whole series of current issues such as slavery, sexual tourism, domestic violence and child abuse into one punchy novel. In addition, she manages to do so in a way that doesn’t feel like she preaching about these evil subject matters, as so many authors can do. The story also tells you a great deal about topics that are hot one minute and dropped like hot cakes the next. For example when Princess Diana was alive mine clearances graced the front pages of hundreds of newspapers, now the mine charities are unlikely to get a few column inches. If you are after a thought provoking and genuinely gripping novel, this debut from Medina is well worth it. Let’s just hope she hasn’t raised the bar too high for her next book.

We caught up with Tim to discuss some of his career highlights, what it’s like to work in the world of showbiz and his plans for the future. Q: Who was the best act you’ve worked with and why? Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy was my favourite as a lyricist, songwriter and a friend. I met him before he signed a record deal and we have became good friends over the years. Q: Who was the worst and why? Van Morrison. He’s extremely talented but very eccentric. With that he is also the most difficult to work with. He had a 2 page long list of requests when he came to perform in Marbella. On the list were things to do as well as things not to do, like chaffeur must remain in the car at all times! Q: How did you get your break into the notoriously difficult Music Industry? I left school and worked on the stock exchange in London before meeting Bob Graced and becoming Assistant to the CEO of Starlite. Q: You’ve managed some big bands and promoted acts, what do you prefer? As a manager I’ve looked after ‘Dream Weaver’ singer Gary Wright. Unfortunately managing acts means you can end up being like a nursemaid to them instead of managing them musically and financially, so I’d take promoting acts any day.

Q: You’ve worked with some of the biggest legends in the music industry, what was it like to work with Dame Shirley Bassey? Shirley Bassey is difficult to work with! A sweetheart but hard to work with!

NEWS

Q: What was a career high point for you? Going on stage to introduce the Doobie Brothers at Carnegie Hall in New York. That was an exhilarating experience.

Q: Was it difficult securing top acts like Blondie and Van Morrison?

Q: What was the lowest point? I was with Jimi Hendrix the night before he died in Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho. He was pretty out of it that night. We got a call in the office the next day to say he’d died. There was not a dry eye in the room.

Q: What are your plans for 2015? Any acts you are talking to at the moment to bring here next year? Yes although I can’t reveal names until the contracts have all been signed. However they are big acts that would fill 20,000 capacity plus venues. I’m also currently in negotiations with 3 top Malaga venues to host these acts.

Yes. Big acts cost big money. The only problem with Marbella itself is the capacity of venues. The Puente Romano and Starlite can only hold 2,500.

Q: Why did you decide to move to Marbella in 2000? Change of scenery. I’d lived in Tuscany and Ibiza previously and fancied something different.

Q: How do you think the music scene on the coast has changed over the last 15 years? It has changed beyond all comprehension. The introduction of digital music has done that. It would be great to bring back vinyl. Also I think music talent shows like ‘X Factor’ are killing the guitar heroes, drummers and bass players in bands that used to be so popular.

In timeless James Bond fashion he likes his Martinis “shaken not stirred” which in mixology terms is known as “The Bradford.” However, W. Somerset Maugham is often quoted as saying that “a Martini should always be stirred, not shaken, so that the molecules lie sensuously on top of one another.” US journalist H. L. ASTON MARTIN DB9 VOLANTE A

pretty sexy and wonderfully noisy addition to the Aston Martin line-up.

At the heart of Aston Martin DB9 Volante’s appeal is the introduction of the new generation Aston Martin V12 engine. The new V12 engine takes some of the ‘Gen4’ VH architecture hardware technology developed for Aston Martin’s super GT, the Vanquish, but has been perfectly tuned to suit the character of the DB9. The result is an engine with effortless torque and peak power – significantly improving the cars performance. With the power up in the latest 13MY model, to 517 bhp from the 6.0-litre V12 and an accompanying 457lb

ft. Which translates to pretty impressive figures of: 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 183mph. The styling changes see the DB9 Volante adopt an even more lithe, fluid and pure form reminiscent of the Aston Martin Virage. Taking a classic Aston Martin GT silhouette as its base, the DB9 adds a more pronounced rear boot ‘flip’ to further enhance the aerodynamic performance of the car. The exterior design of the DB9 communicates a powerfully assertive yet elegant character. The surfaces display taut lines and subtle muscular forms that point to the underlying power of this renowned Sports GT.

FEATURES The DB9 13MY boasts a number of important enhancements over the outgoing car’s already impressive inventory. The braking system, for instance, now uses as standard, Carbon Ceramic Matrix discs and calipers supplied by acknowledged global brake experts, Brembo.

In summary, the DB9 continues as if not the best-selling or most exotic Aston Martin, then at the very least the pivot point of the range, the centre of focus and the car that must, above all others, define what an Aston Martin should be.

While this DB9 offers a refined, comfortable sports GT drive experience, the new carbon brakes provide the confidence and reassurance of reduced brake fade when pressing the car to its sports capability. Arch-filling 20-inch alloys wheels in a variety of designs, full-grain leather interior, leather sports steering wheel, electrically adjustable Sports seats with side airbags, memory seats

and exterior mirrors, satellite navigation, automatic temperature control, trip computer and Organic Electroluminescent (OEL) displays – the DB9 13MY’s list of standard equipment is suitably generous. Additional upgrades can be bought too. Summarising the significantly enhanced appeal of the DB9 13MY, product manager Andy Haslam, said: “DB9 has, rightly, been positioned at the hub of our GT segment offerings for some years now. The introduction of this significantly enhanced 13MY car means Aston Martin buyers have a very clear and compelling model line-up from which to choose. Taking the best elements of Virage, adding important new upgrades and combining these with the iconic DB9 nomenclature we have created a compelling new Sports GT that sits proudly at the very heart of the Aston Martin sports car range.”

he was always one to share her true thoughts so we wonder what the beloved Joan Rivers would have to say to the doctors who apparently took it upon themselves to perform an ‘unauthorized’ biopsy during a routine endoscopy. On the morning of August 28th Joan checked into the Yorkville Endoscopy but during her treatment she went into cardiac arrest and was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan and placed on life support. She died seven days later. Previous to her appointment, the 81 year old was in good health despite her a husky voice and had performed a stand-up show in Times Square the night before. At the time of going to print the NYPD were investigating into the comedian’s death and Melissa Rivers, Joan’s daughter, was planning to sue the Yorkville Endoscopy.

The daughter of Russian immigrant parents, Joan Alexandra Molinsky, was born in 1933 in Brooklyn. An academic, Joan graduated with degrees in English Literature and Anthropology, but it was the spotlight where her passion lay and when an agent suggested she change her name if she wanted to succeed in the industry, Joan Rivers was born. After dabbling in acting, including a lesbian role opposite the equally unknown Barbara Streisand, Joan found a niche in stand-up comedy with her big break arriving in 1965 when she appeared on ‘The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,’ this, alongside ‘The Ed Sullivan Show,’ made Joan a household name. From her television success Joan landed a small part in the 1969 film ‘The Swimmer’, with Burt Lancaster. By now, Joan had hit the big-time and moved to Hollywood where she wrote a TV-movie, ‘The Girl Most Likely To’ and in ISSUE ISSUE 02 05 || MARBELLAROCKS MARBELLAROCKS

By 1983, Joan boasted a regular guest spot on ‘The Tonight Show’ alongside Carson and released the best-selling, Grammynominated comedy album, What becomes a SemiLegend Most? Talking of her mentor in 1986 Joan revealed, “Johnny was the one person who said, ‘Yes, she has talent; yes, she is funny.’ He was the first person in power who respected what I was doing and realized what I could become. He handed me my career.” Unfortunately this relationship soon changed when later that year Carson learnt from the new Fox Television Network that Joan would be hosting a rival late night talk show before she could inform him personally and as a result, he froze her out completely. Joan instantly called to apologize, but he hung up on her and they never spoke again. Joan later shared, “I’ve learned from my dealings with Johnny Carson that no matter what kind of friendship you think you have with people you’re working with, when the chips are down, it’s all about business.” ‘The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers’ premiered on Oct 9th 1986. What should have been one of the greatest times in the comedian’s life soon became the worst when Joan and her producer husband of 22 years, Edgar Rosenberg were ousted after only eight months in May 1987. Three months later Edgar committed suicide. After the tragedy, Joan moved back to New York and began hosting the successful daytime show, ‘The Joan Rivers Show,’ for which she won an Emmy in 1990 and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Four years later Joan added a Best Actress Tony Nomination to her collection of accolades for co-writing and 05 28 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

starring in the Broadway play, Sally Marr… and her Escorts. Over the next few years Joan continued to thrive launching a jewellery line, presenting alongside her daughter Melissa and performing in her sell-out comedy tours in both America and the UK. In 2005, Rivers attended ‘the wedding of the century’ when Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles in Windsor. Two years later, Joan was invited to perform in front of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at the Royal Variety Show. On September 10th 2010, Joan made her first appearance alongside Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne and George Kotsiopoulos on the American television series Fashion Police. The show focused on the do’s and don’t of celebrity fashion and Rivers daughter Melissa took on the role of executive producer. Joan and her daughter continued to work together with the reality TV series Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best? which followed Joan’s move to California to be closer to her family. On August 26th 2014 Joan taped an episode of Fashion Police for the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards and the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, this was Joan’s last television appearance before her death on September 4th 2014. Joan’s extensive pursuit for a place in Hollywood and her achievements and success in a maledominated industry has paved the way for the women who would follow her. Now, it’s unimaginable to think of the likes of Kathy Griffin, Tina Fey, Natasha Leggero, Sarah Silverman and Chelsea Handler having the opportunity to entertain us if it had not been for the barriers the legendary Joan Rivers broke down. The celebrated comedian once offered advice for those women who wanted to follow in her footsteps. “My advice to women comedians is: First of all, don’t worry about the money. Love the process. You don’t know when it’s gonna happen…Also, ignore your competition.”

FEATURES WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED. Statistics in Spain Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what content is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur. When you discover you’ve been burgled

As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a break-‐in or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim.

Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door.

At this point, you can call the claims department of your home insurance company. We advise you to have your policy on hand when you call. Peace-‐of-‐mind with Linea Directa

We understand that your peace-‐of-‐mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home. Hold-‐up outside the home

In many cases, your home insurance policy may cover you for any incidents that occur outside your home. Should you be the victim of a hold-‐up outside your premises your personal belongings are covered. We will ensure replacement documents are quickly and efficiently dealt with, and if required, arrange the locks on your home to be changed. First moment you step in you feel extremely welcomed . Also the par 3 course – best way for a rookie to start the real course playing experience. It’s easier with distances and quicker to play through.

WORST POINTS: The driving range – the position of Aloha’s driving range is a big minus as it sits on top of the slope – you hit downhill and the ball lands to the opposite side of the slope – so you have absolutely no feeling about your distance .You can use this range for a warm up before a game, but for fine tuning your swing and distance control, it is better to go and practice somewhere else.

Has the choice of new lead actors to suit each generation as well as a change of creative direction through the years kept James Bond movies current and relevant? Indeed James Bond himself has morphed through the years in line with shifting social norms and expectations. In the sixties he was a shameless sexist, who charmingly wooed a myriad of women into his bed and casually discarding them when duty called. Today’s Bond is possibly more serious, seduces fewer women (perhaps…) and shows due respect towards his female boss than the earlier Bond. Even Miss Moneypenny, once a soft target for 007’s unsubtle flirtation, is now a more formidable figure with no time for his chauvinistic quips.

Interestingly, Sean Connery was not Broccoli’s first choice as 007, but he was chosen after Patrick McGoohan turned down the role. Surely McGoohan has kicked himself several times ever since. t’s those recurring, distinctive themes that make the character Bond and his movies so iconic. His creaseless, stylish suits, his smooth one-liners, the impossibly gorgeous women. The sexy Aston Martin. The Walther PPK. The Martinis, shaken not stirred. Bondphiles the world over can surely compile legions of lists detailing their best Bond icons. Favourite Bond icons range from Martinis to metal teeth, exploding toothpaste to mini rocket cigarettes and a deadly bowler hat to a

The oldest, and what has to be the most popular Bond icon, is surely the stunning silver Aston Martin DB5 that James Bond took for a few spins in ‘Goldfinger’, ‘Thunderball’, ‘GoldenEye’, ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’, ‘Casino Royale’ and again in ‘Skyfall’. The slick vehicle comes complete with machine guns hidden under the headlights and a button that releases oil to foil one’s enemies. There’s even an eject button to get rid of unwanted passengers. There are other commendable cars that dropped into various Bond movies like the Lotus in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’. This nifty number, that’s delivered to Bond by Q in Sardinia, is nothing too shabby. he first Bond villains are larger-than-life megalomaniacs with preposterous plans for world domination. As the movies progress the baddies become more ‘real’ somehow, perhaps reflecting the modern world in which we live where one can never judge moral fibre from mere appearances. Some of the more notable Bond baddies include: Dr. No is the first of the Bond Baddies. He wants to sabotage American missiles and send them off-course using directed radiowaves. He is a bad yet brilliant scientist with a Napoleonic complex of note. As a result of a radiation accident he sports bionic metal hands. His perverted villainous behavior is exemplified at a dinner party where he lectures his dinner guests on the nature of power before torturing them half to death. line of, “No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!” Mr. Goldfinger is surrounded by a posse of loyal henchmen and this sets a trend for later Bond movies: the main villain who is surrounded by his staunch sidekicks. Ernst Blofeld is another quintessential sixties Bond baddie with a shaved head, North Korean-style tunic and white fluffy cat, who has a thing for feeding unfortunate minions to ravenous piranhas. We first meet him in ‘From Russia With Love’. Blofeld tries to expedite nuclear war between Russia and the United States and then attempts to nuke the world on his own. He pops up again, like a bad penny, in ‘Thunderball’, equally bent on wreaking havoc on the world. In these first two appearances, we don’t see his face, but only his lower body as he strokes his ubiquitous white cat. He appears again in ‘You Only Live Twice’, ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ and ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ where Blofeld meets Bond face-to-face. In ‘Diamonds Are Forever’, Bond is besieged by a brood of Blofelds who are duplicate decoys of the villain – unfortunate aides who’ve undergone plastic surgery. Dr. Kananga, a.k.a. Mr. Big from ‘Live and Let Die’ appears as the Prime Minister of San Monique, a drug-producing island. He dons a rubber mask to morph into his

A

first-hand account of the possibly the craziest event on the planet. The day I learnt about Burning Man, I felt inspired to embark on a new type of life. The day I first experienced Burning Man, my life honestly changed. So, you’re probably asking, what is Burning Man, and how has it affected my life, and many others like me so positively? Burning Man is an annual event, held in an arid deserttype environment, north of a small Nevada town in the US called Gerlach. The sacred land in which this festival takes place is often referred to as “The Playa”. Indeed, it has beach-like properties, but rather than sand, the powdery dust is in fact the remnants of an old riverbed. The festival is based on ten principles, some of which include: leave no trace, radical self-reliance and gifting. The festival puts much emphasis on art and music and is often attended by free minded/spirited, new age souls and hippies, (often referred to as burners). Burning Man has grown to be an internationally recognised event. This year it attracted almost 70,000 people. Burning Man has certainly come a long way in its more than 25-year existence. The whole place actually becomes a functional city by the name of Black Rock City for one whole week of the year. Included in this magical city

are: a pop-up airport, amenities such as public lavatories, medical centres, and policing by volunteers and federal agents of the law. I was 16 years old when I first stumbled upon Burning Man through a documentary I had recorded in error on my VHS video recorder at home. What a fortunate mistake to have made. I remember watching in awe as I witnessed the closest reality to a Mad Max film. Its postapocalyptic feel appealed to me. I liked that everything was vast, distant, raw, and extreme. In the first images I witnessed of Burning Man; there were men shooting semi-automatic guns in the distance on a pop-up firing range, and others dancing naked and free in the ‘desert’. Coming from a traditional family, there was no way at that age that I could ask my parents to allow me to go to such a space… but the thought of visiting never left me. Some ten years on – having entered into my working life after schooling hard through university and college, I decided to take a break; my first holiday. Burning Man was the space I wanted to experience. The Burning Man event has become increasingly global, attracting regular crowds of people from each part of the world. Businesses such as airlines, recreational vehicle hire companies, and even multinational supermarkets such as Walmart are there to advertise to the Burners. It has fast become a multi-million dollar affair. This year was my fourth Burn, so nowadays, I feel like a bit of a veteran at planning for it. Questions such as, how much water do I need, what clothes should I take and what gifts can I present are easier to deal with due to my

FEATURES past experiences, but the great chatter and noise from Burning Man forums that exist regionally to help, share, create, and express ideas, help a lot. I clearly remember my first expedition to Burning Man. At times my brain could not process what my eyes were seeing. It was truly the most bizarre yet the emotionally warmest experience I have ever had. Black Rock City was transformed each night into a magical and mystical space of lights, with fire, play, sounds and art. I always remember too, the unique offerings of goodness from individuals and the organised theme camps.

The art installations are often a great attraction to Burning Man, as are the mutant art cars. Each year, the previous year’s art cars are added upon, or improved with better sound systems, interesting LED lighting, and likewise – the creativity of art and interactive artwork become a fabulous way to pass time, by either looking at them or playing on them throughout the day. Other than the actual burning of a wooden structured man on the Saturday, which is one of the focal points of the weeklong event, there is also a great spiritual aspect to Burning Man. Shamanic experiences and rituals occur in theme camps, but each year, there are thousands of hours of time

There are few places in the world, where you can see people roller-skating on a roller disco stage, having the time of their lives as they weave in and out of people with glitter balls on

their heads, while wearing figure-hugging spandex onesies. I think it’s the one of the few spaced on the planet where anything goes, and everything is accepted.

FEATURES devoted to the creation of a temple, which burns on the Sunday. Burners visit this space which transforms into a solemn, grounding, thought-provoking and sometimes emotional place – whereby all sorts of emotional sharing and healing takes place. I still have the picture in my mind of the temple burning, people chanting and the deep silence of thousands of others watching an important structure burn to ashes. It is a very moving and emotionally rendering experience.

You may still be asking how Burning Man has really changed my life. I guess seeing the love and the unity of people for just one week is simply inspiring in this day and age. I’m yet to experience a place where where colour, class or creed does truly not matter, like it does at Burning Man. There, it makes no difference if you’re a co-founder of Google, a deejay or a bum – all that matters is the overwhelming sense of love and appreciation for the universe and humanity. Of course, there will always be those who ruin the experiences of others through being selfish, but this is just a tiny blight in a greater, happier medium of such a festival. In our ‘default’ world, we have been riddled with violence, religious wars and acts of terrorism, however, the Burning Man experience of caring, sharing, and bearing seems to shun all of our typical fears, and apprehensions and allows us to create, manifest and experience norms, modes, and ideas that we usually would not be so open to experiencing. During my Burning Man experiences, I have also been moved by speaking and interacting with people who have so little in terms of worldly belongings, but who offer so much more in terms of depth of experiences, uniquely-made gifts and through their sharing of stories and ideas. This has often made me wonder: what am I doing with my life? Is my happiness level real, and in check? And so, my life has changed, by becoming that example of a selfless giver, rather than a taker in life – but also

05 46 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

knowing that the simple things in life can make people happy too. I try and gift whatever excess I have available to me, to see a smile, or bring happiness to someone else, as often as I can. Burning Man takes place every year at the end of August/beginning of September. TOP 101 FASHION & STYLE TIPS MEET

MARBELLA ROCKS NEW FASHION STYLIST.

ZAHRA HAS HAD 15 YEARS EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE FASHION INDUSTRY FROM STYLING EVA LONGORIA TO VOGUE COVERS, FASHION WEEKS INCLUDING LONDON, MILAN, NEW YORK AND LA, SUPERPAGEANT CALENDARS, STYLING FOR CANNES & MUCH MORE! SHE IS ALSO A RESPECTED STYLIST AND PERSONAL SHOPPER FOR THE RICH AND FAMOUS HERE IN MARBELLA.

When it comes to fashion and style, it sometimes seems that everyone and her mother has tried tips and tricks they absolutely swear by. Some are useful, while others … well, not so much. With that in mind, we’ve pulled 101 from the best: designers, lifestyle experts and, of course Zahra’s team. With these gems, you’ll be well on your way to living your most stylish life. Have fun. 1. Despite what it says on the tag, cashmere is best washed by hand. To dry it, use a salad spinner, which releases excess water in seconds. 2. Wash new jeans twice before taking them to the tailor. Why? Because jeans will always shrink in length when washed. 3. To stop angora or mohair from shedding, fold the garment and place it into a zip-top bag and freeze it for at least three hours. 4. Remove odours from vintage or thrift clothing by spritzing them with a mixture of one part vodka, two parts water. 5. “Remove white deodorant marks from a garment by gently rubbing the protective foam used on hangers against the fabric.” — Jonathan Simkhai, designer 6. If you get an oil stain on your favorite handbag, coat the mark with baby powder and let it stand overnight. By morning, the stain should be gone. If a bit still remains, repeat the process until the stain is completely gone. 7. The best at home method to keep diamonds sparkling: liquid dishwasher detergent and an old toothbrush. 8. The secret to well-fitting everyday clothes is Lycra. The formulas to look for: 95% cotton/5% Lycra spandex for T-shirts, and at least 2% Lycra for jeans to hold their shape. 9. Always organise your clothes going light to dark from left to right in your closet. Your eye will follow the colour and thus help you stay organised. 10. Wondering about the quality of your cashmere? Gently stretch the body of the garment to see if it snaps back. A lowerquality cashmere won’t.

12. Cut down your closet by 25% by asking yourself this one question: “If I were shopping right this second, would I buy this?” If the answer’s no, out it goes. 13. “Never put your swimwear in the washing machine, and always hand dry. The machine will damage the suit and it will lose its elasticity. The only exception: At the end of the summer or vacation, wash your swimwear in lingerie washing bags on the gentle cycle with a bit of Drift or Woolite. But only after many wears.” — Shoshanna Gruss, Designer 14. To stop bloating five days before a big event, stay away from dairy and whole grains, which can do a number on the digestive system. 15. While fake designer bags are a huge don’t, fake diamond studs are a huge do. Faux stones are hard to spot to the untrained eye.

loosen it up. Once you pull off the paper, the wax should come right out with it. 21. Pour a dash of vodka into vase water to extend the life of your flowers. 22. Spray tights with sticky (read: cheap) hairspray to avoid holes and runs. 23. To clean dirt off suede, remove the crust from a piece of bread and allow it to become stale. Gently rub dirt and stains with the edge of the stale bread, and they’ll disappear. To de-scuff suede, use an eraser or nail file. 24. Shopping for a wedding dress or another big-event outfit? Head to the store with makeup on, proper undergarments, and your hair semi-done to get a better sense of how it’ll look. 25. Double-stick tape works to shorten a hem in a pinch if you can’t get to the tailor before an event.

16. Dressy occasions aren’t the time to play with trends, so know your silhouette and stick to it to always look your best. Perfect example: Sofia Vergara knows she looks good in mermaid dresses, and always chooses variations of the shape on red carpets.

26. Blot, don’t rub, when you spill something on your clothes. Wiping or rubbing will actually further ingrain the stain into the weave.

17. “Never put a garment on immediately after ironing, as this can actually cause new wrinkles to form. Instead, let it sit for five minutes to set the press.” — Althea Harper, Designer and Rowenta Brand Ambassador

29. Repurpose old or thrift sweaters and blankets by using them to reupholster a throw pillow, a chair seat or cover a stool.

18. The best way to de-fuzz a sweater: use a pumice stone. 19. Snap clip-on earrings onto flats for an instant evening shoe, or onto shirt collars for DIY embellishments. 20. If you get wax on a piece of clothing, layer wax paper over the hardened wax and then run an iron over it to

27. “Panty lines are not okay! Every woman should invest in nude, seamless underwear.” — Giuliana Rancic, HSN designer and E! host 28. If you don’t feel like trying on a dress but still want to see where the hem will hit you, align the shoulder seam exactly with your shoulder bone (not your collarbone).

30. “Use hairspray to remove a lipstick stain.” – Kaelen Haworth, designer, KAELEN 31. Add a 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar to the final rinse cycle while doing laundry to maintain the wash of your favorite pair of dark jeans. 32. To stretch tight shoes, fill two freezer bags with water and place into each shoe. Let it freeze overnight. As the water freezes, it’ll gently expand your shoes.

11. “If you don’t have time to try on jeans in the store, try the Neck Method: You can determine your size by placing the waistline of the jeans around the diameter of your neck. If the waistline of the pant comfortably meets at back of your neck, then the jeans will fit.”— Sarah Ahmed, Creative Director, DL1961 Premium Denim

FASHION 33. Frame vintage scarves for cool, original artwork.

34. Due to its high level of surfactants, Dawn dish detergent is especially successful at removing grease and oil stains from clothing.

45. When you’re shopping for a jacket, coat, or blazer, pay attention to the fit around the shoulders. While a tailor can tweak pretty much everything about the fit of a jacket—from tapering the waist to shortening it—they can’t change the shoulders. Make sure the seams sit perfectly at the bony tops of your shoulders.

35. “A flattering silhouette begins with the right underpinnings. Never underestimate the power of Spanx—they’re a girl’s best friend!” — Lucy Sykes Rellie, Fashion Director, Rent the Runway

46. Chic up a sporty puffer vest by cinching the waist with a skinny belt.

36. Revamp an old coat by swapping out the buttons and having a tailor replace the lining with something eyecatching, like a pattern or a bright colour. 37. When getting jeans shortened, always ask your tailor to reattach the original hem. It may cost extra, but it’s worth it. 38. If blush or bronzer breaks in your handbag, premoistened makeup removing wipes will clean up the loose powder flawlessly. 39. Break in stiff or too snug shoes by slipping them on with socks and blasting your feet with a hot hairdryer. 40. Hang a shoe bag on the back of your bathroom door and use it to hold makeup, toiletries, brushes, hair ties, etc. 41. A vintage trunk not only makes a stylish coffee table, but it can also house shoes and clothing you rarely wear. 42. To remove watermarks from leather boots, add a few drops of vinegar to a bowl of cool water and scrub the stains with a soft bristle brush until stains are no longer visible. Let dry overnight. 43. To get rid of squeaky shoes, remove the insole and apply Vaseline or WD-40 before replacing it.

44. To determine if pearls are real, lightly rub them over your teeth. Fake pearls will be perfectly smooth, and real ones will feel slightly gritty or textured.

47. Unless they’re cropped or tapered, pant hems should just graze the tops of your shoes and be from 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch off the floor. 48. Always dryclean coats before storing them, and place on cedar hangers inside cloth garment bags. This preserves the fabric and keeps moths away. 49. If your closet is small, line your shoes up on the floor instead of cluttering the space with clunky shoeboxes. 50. Going to a winter wedding or formal event? Try wearing a sleeveless fur vest as a top, cinching it with a skinny belt or piece of ribbon and pairing it with a below the knee or floor-length skirt like Alexander McQueen here. 51. How to care for fur at home: Pass the fur with a hairbrush and steam it for added bounce, volume and shine. 52. Marquise or oval ring shapes help to create the illusion of longer, more slender fingers, even on small or wide hands. Pearls or oval stones are also flattering. 53. Everyday bras should be replaced every three to six months, as that’s when they start to lose elasticity and support. 54. Ideally, a pencil skirt should hit the top of your knee. Any lower and it will start to shorten your leg.

FASHION 55. Pants a bit too tight? Let them air dry and stretch the waistband by hand (or with a hairdryer) while they’re still damp. 56. Still look chic while showing some skin: If you’re wearing a miniskirt or shorts, cover up on top. If your top is skimpy, go for full-coverage bottoms. 57. Don’t underestimate the power of a well-fitting, stylish winter coat. You can be wearing pyjamas underneath and you’ll still look perfectly put together.

58. Windex restores the glossy sheen on patent leather without doing any damage. 59. Fold jeans like a pro: Lay jeans on a flat surface, fold in half from left to right. Grab the stacked jean legs and fold them in half so the hem of the jeans lines up with the waistband. Fold the jeans in half one more time. 60. The power of a silk pillowcase isn’t a myth: Not only do they prevent “sleep crease,” they’re much, much gentler on your skin and hair and can actually prevent premature ageing. 61. “The best way to store fashion jewellery, including Sterling Silver, is in Ziploc bags. This helps pieces retain lustre and reduces tarnishing and scratches. 62. If the garment you’re ironing has delicate buttons or detailing, cover them with the bowl of a metal spoon and press the surrounding fabric. 63. Don’t buy items you know you won’t properly care for. For example, if you know you’re never going to hand-wash that delicate cami or beaded sweater, don’t buy it. 64. “Pair flirty, feminine dresses with masculine spectator shoes for an effortless and unexpected look.”

65. To achieve the perfectly effortless cuffed sleeve, keep the top button (which is called the gauntlet) buttoned while you roll. 66. V-neck sweaters and tees give the illusion of a longer torso. 67. Spritzed a bit too much perfume on yourself this morning? Use unscented, oil-based makeup remover to remove excess perfume. 68. Tend to wear certain leather shoes without socks? Always stuff them with a soft cloth when you’re done wearing them. This absorbs moisture and helps the shoes keep their shape. 69. “Hoop earrings are a classic style that every woman—regardless of age—should have, but the type depends on your face. If you have a thin face, go for larger round or embellished hoops. If you have a round face an elongated hoop or drop style is best.” — 70. If you can’t run jeans through the washing machine, try freezing them inside a plastic bag for two days to zap odours. 71. Looking for an easy trick to make your bare legs look longer? Try nude-colored pumps or heels. Dark shoes make your legs look shorter, but light-toned versions give the illusion that they extend a few extra inches. 72. Wrap an empty bottle of your favorite perfume in a handkerchief and tuck it into your underwear drawer for a subtle scent. 73. Heat can warp your glasses frames, so always keep them in a hard case and never wear them on your head on a hot day. 74. Spray shirts prone to sweat stains with lemon juice before washing. The natural acid dissolves alkaline sweat reside that could cause yellow discolouration.

FASHION 75. It’s a myth that loose styles flatter a large bust or a plus-size woman. The area just under the bust is a woman’s smallest torso measurement, so emphasizing it with a structured waistband that hits higher than your natural waist will make you look a size smaller. 76. Use shaving cream and a washcloth to remove liquid make-up from shirt collars. 77. A modern trick to looking like the most effortlessly stylish girl in the room: Pair dressy bottoms (a velvet maxi, a leather or beaded skirt, silk pants) with a worn gray crew-neck sweatshirt or T-shirt. 78. When in doubt, always choose the smaller denim size, since jeans stretch with wear. 79. Never dry a wet shoe with heat. Let it dry naturally in open air. Heat will dry out leather and the lifespan of the shoe will be cut in half. 80. The easiest way to make your closet look organized: Buy all the same hangers for everything–same color, same shape. 81. Before bed, pour two or three tablespoons of baking soda into sweaty workout sneakers and tilt the shoe to distribute the soda evenly. This will eat any odour and absorb perspiration. 82. “For guaranteed weight loss, I advise people to follow my A, B, C’s – no Alcohol, Bread or processed Carbs.”— David Kirsch, celebrity trainer and fitness guru. 83. To prevent clothing from wrinkling in a suitcase, fold everything in plastic dry cleaning bags. 84. If you can’t fit two fingers underneath your bra band comfortably, it’s probably too tight. 85. Pile on good accessories—scarves, sunglasses, hats, statement jewelery—to instantly transform even the most basic outfit. 86. Confused about laundry settings? Remember this: The hotter the water, the cleaner the clothing will be. While warm water is fine for most clothes, linens and dirty white clothing are best washed in hot water to remove germs and heavy soil. Cold water is usually used for delicates. 87. A structured hat should rest about 1/8 to a 1/2-inch above the ears. 88. After a shower, use your hairdryer to de-mist bathroom mirrors in seconds. 89. A good tip when cleaning out your closet: Ask a friend whose style you admire to come over and help. She/he might offer new insight on how to wear certain items before you toss them.

90. It might sound “budget,” but a hot glue gun works amazingly well to hem skirts, pants and even jeans in a pinch. 91. Looking for uses for all the single socks you’ve amassed while doing laundry? When you’ve got aches or pains, fill a sock with dry beans or rice and pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Voila, an instant (and free) heating pad. 92. Wear your new real leather jacket in the rain to break it in. Water will soften up the leather and allow it to stretch and crease at specific points on your body. 93. Who has the time to hand wash bras? Machine wash them in cold water in a mesh zipper bag and drape them over a hanger to air dry. 94. Use a lemon wedge to remove excess or streaky self-tanner. 95. Track lighting is possible even for the tiniest closet: Buy a track kit, screw it into the ceiling, run the wire down the wall and plug it into the nearest outlet. Not only will you see all your clothes better, but you’ll feel like you have a more luxurious closet. 96. If you’re unsure about an impulse or sale purchase, leave it at the store. If you’re still thinking about it when you wake up the next day, buy it. 97. Have a sequin garment you don’t wear anymore? Remove the sequins and sprinkle them into a vase of flowers. Gorgeous! 98. A good shoemaker can fully rebuild your favorite pair, even if the arch is cracked. 99. To coax a loose thread back into place, gently tug at the stitches to the sides of the pull, as well as above and below. 100. Pocket squares add an extra level of polish, but make sure it doesn’t match your tie in either pattern or fabric choice. Before you go totally conservative, remember that the pocket square is where you get the most freedom and the one place you get to add a little pizzazz to your suit.

When buying an off-the-rack suit, the number one thing to check is how the shoulders fit. A seamless look is important, if there are bumps do not buy it.

Your belt should be fairly thin and the same colour as your shoes.

The top button of a two-button jacket (or the middle button of a three-button) should fall at or above the navel.

If you’re wearing a waistcoat, always keep the bottom button unbuttoned. (But plenty of men break this rule and are still able to pull off the 3-piece beautifully.)

If you’re going for more formal business attire, opt for a double-button, notched lapel jacket.

HAIR & BEAUTY

Simple detailing took over the runway for New York Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2015. Marbella Rocks gives you the lowdown on the hottest hair and make-up looks at the event, as created by renowned stylist Frank Rizzieri at Aveda.

Knot Your Ballerina Bun

A

sculpted take on a classic chignon was the look of the day at the Novis presentation. Vivid color and graphic prints reigned supreme for the Spring/Summer 2015 Novis presentation by designer Jordana Warmflash. Frank Rizzieri created a sculptural knotted bun to coincide with the details and distinction of the collection. “This is the bun of that cool girl who just happened to easily twist her hair up and off of her face,” Rizzieri said. “It has natural pieces poking out so it’s not too perfect. It’s definitely graphic, different, but simple”.

How to Get the Look

Step 1: Spritz hair with Pure Abundance Style Prep to give volume and thickness in preparation for the hair to hold the finished style. Step 2: Blow dry hair straight to help expand the volume while also creating sleekness; add a light mist of Brilliant Spray-On Shine for a touch of sheen. 05 62 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

Step 3: Create a solid center part before pulling hair tightly back into a ponytail that rests just above the nape of the neck, but below the center of the head; firmly secure with a bungee cord elastic. Step 4: Taking two sections from the ponytail begin to strongly knot the sections tightly doing this continuously until the end of the ponytail. Step 5: Coil the knotted sections up into the base of the ponytail letting random pieces poke out for a sculptured look and added detail. Secure the knotted bun with pins until it is tight to the head. Step 6: Apply hairspray onto a small bristled brush and gently use on the top of the head toward the bun to smooth flyaways.

HAIR & BEAUTY Twist on Straight Hair

A

fusion of Japanese aesthetic meshed with Peruvian craftwork was the inspiration to the Spring/Summer 2015 collection for Tibi by designer Amy Smilovic.

Step 3: Starting on the left side of the head, lift a section of hair out of the way to backcomb the underneath side section that rests just behind the ear. The teased section will serve as the anchor for the bungee cord hair tie. Repeat on the right side.

To correspond with the collection featuring rich details such as quilted Fuji silks, raw edges and touches of watery colors, Rizzieri fashioned a modern style with edge and sophistication. “With just small touches of details, a straight style was transformed,” Rizzieri said. “The bungee elastic allowed for a cool placement to keep the hair off the face, while the addition of the ridges midway down the hair added an element of interest setting the look apart from a traditional straight look.”

How to Get the Look

Step 4: Beginning on the left side of the head, hook the bungee cord hair tie into place and pull to the right side, securing in the teased sections of hair.

Step 1: Apply a thin layer of style prep cream to give the hair volume and grip. Once fully spritzed, use a hairdryer to dry the hair straight, not allowing for any bends in the hair.

Step 2: Lightly mist hair from roots to ends and in small sections, use a flat iron to make hair straight. Once done, set with hairspray.

Step 5: With the flat iron, take a top section of hair midway down between the ear and bottom of hair ends and grip the hair with the iron. Slightly flip the iron up to make a small ridge. Then create another ridge, just below, in the opposite direction. Step 6: Use several drops of serum to gently set the top of the hair for a final sheen.

HAIR & BEAUTY Stella McCartney Sleek Up-do

B

ritish designer Stella McCartney was one of the highlights of London Fashion Week this September. She showcased her ‘Green Carpet Collection’ of ethical bespoke outfits with the aim of changing the perceptions of green fashion. Hollywood A-listers including Samuel L Jackson, Colin Firth, Drew Barrymore and Salma Hayek attended the event.

Step 3: Backcomb behind the 2 side sections and top section of hair to create volume for the overall look.

Step 4: Using your hand with a small amount of firm hold gel, smooth the front section of hair over the teased and backcombed hair for a sleek look.

A unique collection of dresses and tailored clothing was complimented by trendy scraped back hair for a simplistic yet very edgy and modern look.

How to Get the Look

Step 1: Brush hair thoroughly and apply a small amount of style prep cream to give the hair volume and grip.

Step 2: Divide the hair at the top half of your head into three equal sized sections, one at the top and two at each side of the head. Secure with a crocodile clip or similar.

MARBELLAROCKS || ISSUE ISSUE 02 05 64 MARBELLAROCKS

Step 5: Secure with a hair band into a low ponytail that begins at the nape of your neck. Spritz the finished look with a generous amount of hairspray to hold.

HAIR & BEAUTY Tousled Texture for Men

I

t was all about individuality and the character at Richard Chai’s Spring/Summer 2015 Collection. To keep things cool and fresh, Guest Artist Rizzieri created a minimal look for the hair that had edge, distinction and texture. “For the guys, we played up the men’s natural hair, to create a lived in, easy texture,” Rizzieri said. “It was about the guy that went out the night before and this is the hair he woke up with; then he ran his fingers through his hair and started his day; definitely a cool guy statement.”

Step 2: For curly and wavy hair, use a blow dryer to smooth out kinks.

Step 3: To create the vibe that the hair is lived in, apply a texturing balm. Use the fingers and hands to really scrunch up the hair for an overall sculpted look.

Step 4: Work fingers through the top of the hair, tousling it to the desired shape.

How to Get the Look:

Step 5: Set the final look with a spritz of firm hold hairspray.

Step 1: Look for the natural fall of the hair to let it lie where it wants to fall.

nyone who frequents a gym will know its common knowledge that to build muscle and size we need to lift heavy. A smaller set range with a heavier weight is an age old, tried and tested method of building mass but there are other ways. Anyone can swing a heavy weight around like the hulk and think they are achieving. It feels good to lift a personal best and feel the pump but are they lifting with enough technique and timing to optimise growth and strength versus the time and effort (and money) spent in the gym hammering away at each muscle group? Most of the time they are not. Technique, Timing and Form are all crucial to building muscle and size. This month I’ll be covering the notion of “Time Under Tension” and Muscle “Hypertrophy”.

Time Under Tension for Muscle Hypertrophy Most people base their training around the emphasis of weight and number of reps. But what’s crucially important for muscle growth is time under tension (TUT), but just how much attention does this muscle building factor really need?

HEALTH & FITNESS

Sounds complex right? Don’t leave yet coz although it sounds technical, it’s really the most simple thing you will learn. Time under tension (TUT) is simply the length of time a muscle is contracting to resist the force of a weight. For example, if someone were performing a set of bicep curls and it took them 30 seconds to complete the set, they have a total TUT of 30 seconds. Time – Is the period during a set where the working muscle is contracting. Tension – Is the force a muscle is producing to contract and move/hold the weight. Put simply stop swinging and rushing your lifts. Charles Poliquin author of the strength and mass development book “The Poliquin Principles” states that different training objectives such as muscular strength, hypertrophy (growth) and endurance are achieved optimally by different time under tension ranges. To insure you’re always working in the time under tension zone optimum for muscle growth, stick to: Reps: 8 – 12 per set Tempo: 2 sec Concentric (Positive/Lift) 3 sec Eccentric (Negative/Release). You want to hold for 1 second at the top and bottom of the exercise this means it will take you roughly 40 - 60 seconds to perform a set and put you in the middle of the recommended hypertrophy TUT range.

Peet’s Tip:

Keep rest between sets to 60 seconds or less during the workout. This will not allow the full recovery of muscle groups, thus causing the muscle to utilize deeper fibers to deal with the weight load. It may also eliminate timewasting activities in the gym, making your workouts more efficient. Lastly, it insures a constant pump in the targeted muscle group, allowing proper expansion—and eventually, repair—in the right places. If you start to get tired as you progress through your workout from set to set, people will do one of two things. Keep trying to push the same weight but with less reps, or reduce the weight and keep working in the same rep range.

If this happens, you should always choose to reduce the weight slightly and maintain your rep range. The reason for this is simple, if you start lowering reps you will be reducing your time under tension and start moving away from the optimum range for muscle hypertrophy. Also, if you keep struggling with the same weight while dropping reps your form will become sloppy. This will result in the recruitment of other muscles to compensate and takes tension off the target muscle. As three-time Mr. O (1977-1979) and one of my biggest inspirations Frank Zane instructs, “Always be sure the negative motion is slower than the positive. By putting more focus on a slower negative, amazing gains can be realised.” Also to bring on growth and put height on your muscularity, contract hard at the peak of the movement. This delivers dimension to your muscles and sends a message into the muscle that spurs further growth. So squeeze hard at the top, and release nice and slow. Below is a workout from my Bicep session, after warm up I will hit a compound movement with 8 sets of 8 with a 30 second rest.

Exercise: Cable Bicep Curl Form: Set the bricks to a weight that you feel you can perform another 3 reps comfortably after your first set. Stand square on to the cable machine set from the lowest position with a straight or V bar (I have a wrist injury so I tend to use the V). Lock out stance with toes around shoulder width, slightly bend your knees but lock them with chest out. I lean back slightly as to add a fuller range of motion; this also eliminates “Swing!” Sets: 8 Reps: 8 Concentric: 1sec Eccentric: 3 sec Rest: 30 sec

Photography: Rebecca Louise

What Does Time Under Tension Mean?

05 | MARBELLAROCKS ISSUE 02

69

HEALTH & FITNESS Peet’s Tip: Always explode on the positive part of the movement for maximum activation of fast twitch muscle fibres. Squeeze and hold the contraction at the top of the movement for one second. Control the negative (lowering) and maintain tension on the muscle throughout the entire exercise. I can’t stress these points enough. Control the weight… don’t let the weight control you!

Bottom line While “Time Under Tension” is a notion all lifters should be weary and mindful of, don’t occupy too much time worrying about it. It’s fundamental like walking, we don’t think about walking we just do it. The trick is to cement FORM and TIMING as a fundamental part of your everyday training technique. Add this mentality to your workouts and it should set you on a good course to solid GAINZ and decrease the chance of injury. Oh and don’t forget to lift like there’s a loved one under a car!

Peet’s Progress

T

his August I prepped and entered my first “Mens Physique Fitness” competition at the Malaga Summer Muscle Festival. It was a great experience and chance to make all my mistakes and learn what it takes to step onstage. Diet, Training, Carb depletion, Water/Sodium manipulation and even hair removal and Tanning were all a fascinating experience. I helped train and competed with 18 year old Ali Blight and the oldest competitor was 47. Never too young or too old! I recommend for anyone who is thinking of getting into fitness to visit an event like this, it really gives you some motivation seeing what is achievable.

EAT, SLEEP & DRINK

I

f you haven’t ventured to the stunning El Banco in Aloha yet, what are you waiting for?

Situated on the top of the hill as you drive into Aloha Pueblo, this international fusion cuisine restaurant occupies the prime corner spot where the old BBVA bank used to be. You can sit outside and take in the breathtaking views, morning, noon or night, as El Banco is open from 9.30am till midnight. El Banco’s ethos is to create homemade, honest cooking with international influences but with exquisite fusion style. Every dish is packed with flavour but presented with the panache of many of the local 5 star eateries. Chef Giacomo is inspired by his Peruvian roots and passionate about great quality produce. He loves using recipes and ingredients from all around the world to create innovative dishes. Firm favourites on this lunch and dinner menu include healthy salads, homemade pasta and

05 74 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

sauces, fresh local fish and top quality meats including Argentinean Steak. If you fancy trying something different there is Peruvian delicacies such as Ceviche (fresh raw fish cured in citrus juices and chilli) with corn and sweet potatoes or Yucca with guacamole and spicy garlic mayonnaise. Our testers went for the Beef Carpaccio and Quinoa Salad followed by Tuna Tataki and Broccoli Orecchiette. The food was delicious and portion sizes generous without being overwhelming. The homemade desserts of Brownie and ice cream and Tiramisu were reportedly well worth undoing a notch on your belt buckle for. El Banco restaurant is owned and run by husband and wife team Gustavo Kiguelman and Laura de Luca, owners of La Red on Marbella’s beachfront, so you know you are in safe hands. What’s more the couple are on hand every night to greet you with a warm welcome and ensure you have a fun filled night.

EAT, SLEEP & DRINK Since taking ownership of the El Banco in July 2013, Laura and Gustavo have revitalized the space with a fresh yet vintage look, which encapsulates the historical feel of the old bank, but with a modern, sophisticated edge. Another reason (like you needed one!) to come to El Banco is they offer weekly Tango classes on a Wednesday and have live DJ’s performing every Saturday. Perfect if you like some entertainment while you dine. Similarly if you’re looking for somewhere to come and enjoy a relaxing glass of wine or cava, you can always pop by. EAT, SLEEP & DRINK

by Tracy Lee

N

ow here is the first of a series of columns to help widen your knowledge of the wine world producing countries.

But surely Canada’s too cold to produce quality wines? Well, that’s where most of us are wrong! Canada is famous for Ice wine but there are over 400 wineries producing top quality dry white and red wines - it’s only because Canadians drink most of it themselves that’s we don’t see much of it on our shelves! There are four main areas of vineyards: • Niagara Peninsular (Ontario) • Okanagan Valley • Nova Scotia • Quebec The reason why International grape varieties can grow successfully in such a cool climate is that most of the vineyards surround the Great Lakes. These huge lakes assist in the ripening of the grapes in autumn, as they store the summer’s heat in the great bodies of water. Also, in the Niagara Peninsular, Ontario (where most of the

05 76 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

wine is produced) air is circulated so well by the Niagara Escarpment leading to the Niagara Falls. This moderates the temperature preventing cold air standing still, which would cause frost and damage the grapes. The Niagara Falls acts like a giant air conditioning system circulating the air- it’s incredible if you think about it! Of course, cooler climate grape varieties flourish the best, for example Riesling, but winemakers have excelled, surprisingly, in the last twenty years in producing Bordeaux blends and single varietal wines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir.

EAT, SLEEP & DRINK Ice-wine is the famous and most important wine of Canada. It is a sweet wine from the Niagara Peninsular in Ontario, which maximises the benefits of the cold and is made from Riesling or local Vidal grapes. These are harvested in January when the grapes literally ‘freeze’ on the vine in the early hours of the morning in the snow (it’s a cold job but someone’s got to do it?!), and they are then pressed before the grapes defrost so only the concentrated grape juice is extracted, minus the frozen water content which stays behind frozen! It’s a very simple, but very clever process, producing incredible sweet wines. Only small quantities of juice can be extracted from each grape so it is a long process, a very meticulous one at that as the grapes are all hand-picked. This therefore reflects in the price and the wines are very expensive, but it is really worth buying as the quality is second to none.

Classic Styles: • Crisp, lemony whites • Fruity, juicy medium-bodied reds • Intense, luscious, rich sweet wines

Main Grape Varieties: • Riesling or Vidal (Ice wine) • Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer (whites) • Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and regional varieties (reds)

Must tastes:

• Ontario’s Ice wine • Niagara Peninsula’s Bordeaux blends (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) • Niagara Peninsula’s Riesling

A Different Canvas for Art in Estepona!

E

stepona is making its mark as a cultural destination with a difference.

The twentieth work in Estepona’s ‘Mural Route’ has recently been unveiled in the town. This series of giant murals by various artists adorn the façade of various buildings within the town. The eye-catching project was the brainchild of the local council who commissioned a group of artists to swap their usual canvases for something a bit different. The latest mural ‘Ángel, El Buceador’ (Angel, The Diver) is the work of French artist Eric Aman, whose portfolio of art can be found in major cities around the world, including: Siena, Livorno, Montevideo, Madrid and even in Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. ‘Ángel, El Buceador’ can be found on the side of an

apartment block in the ‘Tres Banderas’ area of Estepona and represents a young man in bathing gear breaking through the building’s wall. Another of the murals along the route has the distinction of being the biggest vertical mural in Spain. Covering almost 1.000 square metres, ‘Fishing Day’ by artist José Fernández Ríos occupies the facades of six buildings covering almost 1.000 square metres.

CAREERS

CAREERS INTERVIEW: MARBELLA’S VERY OWN MEDIA MOGUL

ANNIKA URM THE LOWDOWN:

J

ust one of Annika Urn’s many strings to her bow is CEO of leading multi-lingual website iMarbella. What not a lot of people know here in Marbella is that Annika has built up an impressive career launching her own female media company, Buduaar, in Estonia, a fashion magazine Buduaar Shopping, made TV Shows and created an online and live marketplace for selling clothes and beauty products. In addition, rhe runs an accounting company in Estonia and is about to open a new business EMS Studio Electro. She is also a busy mother of two, a Zumba fan, keen mountain skier and has also worked as a trainer and an accountant.

PERSONAL FRAMEWORK: Q: What was your educational background? International Business Administration MBA – in Estonian Business School (EBS) Bachelor in Accounting and Managment.

many events, parties and a live market for 5000 people. The website is called www.buduaar.ee and we also had a fashion magazine Buduaar Shopping. It is still a successful business. It was very hard but we made it. Q: Did you always want to work in media? Not really, I just needed a challenge to do something different.

Q: Can you talk through your early career and how you came to set up three very successful businesses at such a young age?

Q: It is a notoriously difficult career to break into – how did you get your break?

I was a hard-working, ambitious and fearless. I did what I was interested in. I also had a very good education, I finished three schools at the same time. I started to work at a very early age 16, as a shaping trainer. When I was 18 years old I was already an accountant before going to university. And then I studied accounting as a profession.

I guess online media was a new thing on the market at that time. When we had a crisis in Estonia many paper magazines had closed down, we found our opportunity. I guess we didn’t know professionally what we were really doing, but we had huge enthusiasm. And we worked a lot, a lot, a lot! And I never give up. I also had strong support from my family, which actually gives you more stability and strength to succeed.

The media business was something I just ran into. I bought an idea and shares in one start-up company, and we were working hard to make it successful. The first money I invested into that media company I got from a real estate investment.

Q: What’s the best thing about your job?

The media business I got myself into was lifestyle fashion, beauty, life - all about woman. We organized so

Q: What are the secrets to owning your own business?

MARBELLAROCKS || ISSUE ISSUE02 05 88 MARBELLAROCKS

You will never be bored. Nobody tells me what to do! I can do so many different things in different places. I can travel and show a different life to my children.

CAREERS Hard work, discipline and passion for your work. I always wanted to be independent. First I wanted a stable income and then I can do what I really like. But in reality, life is never stable. You need to take responsibilities and risk and you can’t blame anybody but else but yourself. You also need education, mentors, experiences and luck.

I didn’t. I was forced by my partner! But now I am happy because I can do my own things and move onto a bigger, international playground. Otherwise I would be stuck in the same life.

Q: How do you plan your week with so many different areas of business you are involved in? I write down the things I have to do, I take time for planning and thinking! Q: What challenges have you faced with running your own business and how have you overcome them? The challenge is you need to pay salaries to your employees even if the company doesn’t make money. So I go myself and sell advertising. And I always sell because I am so highly motivated to sell! Otherwise I would have to close down my company and then I will lose all my investment. That’s a good enough motivation for me!

Q: What advice would you give to our readers who are thinking of selling a business? If somebody wants to buy – sell! Normally you are too emotionally involved with your business and you maybe don’t see reality - price, market situation etc. You always think the price should be higher. But in reality just calculate your 10 year profit and sell with that price. Q: What inspires you? Discovering new things, passion and life journey itself. Also my independency, I can decide my own schedule. I love what I do! Also my children inspire me. Q: What is your working motto?

Q: What advice would you give our readers that maybe looking to launch their own business? Make a business plan, because this makes you think all the aspects about your business. You will have to do market research, ask advice from mentors, but of course in the end you have to make the decisions on your own. Calculate all the possible risks and write them down. If you invest money into something, have control over it! Do it alone, don’t take partners. Don’t give up! If you are very passionate about your business and you like to do it, then most likely you will succeed. If you do it just for money, do something you are an expert in. Q: You are also selling Buduaar for a cool 6-figure sum – how did you come to this decision?

I have several! Leadership begins when you are doing something a little bit more. I will focus on solutions instead of problems, all the way to the customers are satisfied. The greatest achievers in the corporate world cannot hide in a desk in the shade. They know that the business lies in the creation of human contact. Of exceptional achievements, behind you’ll find an extraordinary effort.

ASTROLOGY

MARBELLA ROCKS ASTROLOGY FORECAST OCTOBER 2014

Aries

Gemini

Leo

You may feel like you and a loved one are going over old ground together. If one of you has been pushing the other for a commitment - expect discussions to be resumed or even ultimatums issued. But please don’t make the latter unless you are prepared to see them through. You’ll lose all self respect if you do. Alternatively, an ex re-enters your life but you need to ask yourself if you want to repeat the past or release it? You’ve been yearning for new experiences now as opposed to more of the same and even if you do entertain a second time around love, you’ll be out to prove that this time you’re going to be no pushover. When it comes to negotiations whether personal or professional, you need to stand firm now.

Get ready to encounter your past in some way, shape or form this month. You turn up at that bar or party and there’s your ex. Or you hear from someone you thought never to hear from again out of the blue. Others may see an opportunity they thought had vanished reappear. If it knocks a second time, don’t hesitate. However, if someone just turns out to be plain hard work you could have second thoughts about it. A new job offer could be on the horizon but try not to finalise things until the end of the month when you’re going to be in the perfect position to negotiate the details. That’s also the time when romance starts to heat up or you rediscover the passion with your current squeeze. You’re in a playful and adventurous mood and if you want something don’t rest until you get it or them. Who can resist you now?

While home, family and links to your past are on your mind at the beginning of the month, it is the future which has you all fired up, Leo. Learning opportunities or a chance to up-skill could present itself and travel could beckon for many. If you are travelling allow extra time to get to your destination as delays and cancellations could add to the adventure. A stroke of good lucky could literally leave you reeling at your good fortune but don’t rub it in if you’re on a roll. Real estate decisions or moving is likely now but try to delay signing any contracts or leases until the end of the month. If you find yourself with extra money - chances are you’ll spend it on your living - and loving.

Taurus

Cancer

Virgo

Revelations could have you reeling during the first half of the month and if so you will be kicking yourself you didn’t pick up on this sooner. Others may seem determined to undermine you or just to throw a spanner in the works - all of which may have you thinking the universe is singling you out personally. It isn’t but it might just feel that way. If the first half of the month brings challenges, what follows may more than make up for that. New beginnings are about to follow especially if endings have featured recently, and that includes a new love interest for singles, a new job or your ‘joie de vie’ is restored by a few ego and pleasure boosting situations. Don’t judge a book by its cover this month and don’t judge the month by the way it may start off.

Decisions around your career or which affect your long term security are now in focus. An opportunity could present itself which may require you to act quickly but if so, look at the long term implications. You will have to live with the results of your choice for a long time to come. This is an excellent time for making inroads into your career path or even busting through that glass ceiling - wait - what glass ceiling?! The past features in some way - you may be drawn back to revisit somewhere you lived or else just be thinking about The Way We Were but be careful not to over sentimentalise things. Isn’t it funny how when we think of our childhood we usually only remember sunny days? Singles could attract someone established in their profession or who is considered a ‘catch’. Is she really going out with you? Yes, looks that way.

Don’t be afraid to repeat yourself if necessary and to confirm (or even double confirm) all appointments and arrangements to meet. It may seem that people are deliberately out to misunderstand what you are saying, and even if you start to come across as a little OCD, it’s better than having crossed-wires. Finances may demand your attention especially if you’ve neglected them of late or if you didn’t read the small print on that loan/credit card you took out in the past as bills are due. If you end up in the red, now is the time to do something to ensure this doesn’t become a habit. By the end of the month however passion pushes you towards a new experience - perhaps romantic or even to showcase your smarts. Remember - passion is contagious so don’t be surprised when others are willingly infected!

MARBELLAROCKS || ISSUE ISSUE 05 03 02 94 MARBELLAROCKS

Libra

Sagittarius

Aquarius

Do you think you deserve a better future or are you intent on repeating the past Libra? If a former fling reappears you need to first check whether 1) they have really changed and 2) you have changed and realised you deserve something better. Unless of course, you are determined to just have more of the same. Your self-worth is under the spotlight and you’ll see your beliefs reflected all too clearly with what’s going on with your money and your personal life this month. A decision may also await you regarding partners or someone close to you. Singles could finally get the answer to that ‘loves me, loves me not?’ question. If fun, pleasure, love and extra money all flow your way it just mirrors your belief that you ARE worth it. Don’t just believe it - BE it.

This month could bring the gift of goal realisation as something you’ve wished for or hoped for, for a very long time could literally drop into the palm of your hand. Social connections you’ve allowed to lapse could come alive again and if so, you’ll find that old resonance is still there. However, what you’ve suspected for some time - that niggling voice of your intuition, is now confirmed loud and clear so don’t pretend you didn’t know what was coming and act all shocked at a revelation. You of all signs should appreciate that the truth sets you free. By the end of the month you are fired up with ambition or just with the desire to fund your next big adventure which sets you off towards your next goal - that of increasing your bank account. Watch how love and money are intrinsically linked in your life. If one is flowing - the other will follow.

If you’ve allowed yourself to get stuck in a rut then what transpires this month is designed to unstick you. Be open to something (or someone) different. You’re on a huge soul learning curve now but that doesn’t have to mean you’re stuck in the schoolroom or lecture hall (although some of you will be). Your classroom is life and your university is the world. Freedomenhancing aspects happening at the moment mean you are hurtling head-long into something bigger and better if you have the courage to embrace it. Singles could meet that strange, charmed and wonderful person who embodies the kind of success you secretly envy - the kind that only comes from being yourself. If they turn up consider they are a reflection of that unexpressed part of you striving to be free. Perhaps freedom lies in being together. Sign up for a class now.

Who makes it happen for you this month, Scorpio? You do. Whether it’s changes in your personal or your professional life, it’s time to be your own catalyst and head fearlessly towards whatever (or whomever) it is your want now. You need to understand that the saying: ‘Heaven helps those who help themselves’ applies to you and understand you can’t afford to sit back and wait for what you want in life to come to you. Heaven help anyone who doesn’t live up to your expectations or who is attempting to pull the wool over your eyes, however. Unexpected revelations may lead you to revise your opinions about someone and if so, you won’t be taking any prisoners. A few goodbyes may be in order - only to clear the way for something better as your birthday season promises fabulous new beginnings in work and love.

Are the changes that are going on around you ones you have initiated or more importantly, are they to your liking or are you caught up in someone else’s power-play or drama? Time to look closely at your ambitions and whether you are master of your own ship - or just along for someone else’s ride. Decisions around where you live or your career may need to be taken now, especially if you have been putting them off for whatever reason. Some of you may see an old opportunity you thought had passed you by return while others may return to an old path - or even an old flame. One thing is certain, if you are in the wrong job or with the wrong person, nothing will keep you there now. Stand by for liberation but understand that often freedom means we have to pay a price on some level. But you’re willing to pay it now.

Get ready for a big shift this month and this is most likely to be around how you see yourself and your relationship to money. There’s a big change sweeping through that may have been thinking about for some time but which you now put into motion. Be warned that some people may not like this new, dynamic you that’s emerging but this is their problem - not yours. You may find yourself in a position where you have to renegotiate something - this can be anything from your salary to the conditions around a relationship and if so, you’ll prove to the other party you’re no pushover now. Love can be found travelling or in the form of someone who can add to your sense of freedom and worldly experience. It may mean leaving what’s familiar far behind you. But deep down inside, this is the change you’ve been secretly yearning for.

DUBIOUS LEOTARD DESIGN

MORE THAN SHE BARGAINED FOR

I

n case you missed it another funny, yet this time accidental, nude image was circulating the web. Brit Aimi Jones was selling a ASOS yellow skater dress

on auction site eBay but failed to notice her own reflection in the door mirror, camera in hand, wearing a black bra and no knickers. The post went viral and sparked a flurry of fake eBay sale ads for the yellow dress with fictional characters making an appearance. Aimi from Oxfordshire, said: ‘It’s so embarrassing. It is such a dizzy, stupid thing to do and now the whole world’s seen me in the nude. I put it on eBay last Saturday morning and realised straightaway so ended the sale. But

hoever was put in charge of designing the Colombia Female Cycling Team’s leotard was surely joking when they initially put the idea for these gems from pen to paper. They probably sniggered when their sketched designs were approved by the Colombian Team, laughed when they when into production…. and wet themselves when the athletes actually competed in them last month! And no, luckily they are not made of mesh fabric! Look closely and you’ll notice the women’s different skin tones. Colombia social media forums are in overdrive about it (some saying the designs are for the better) and even Head of the International Cycling Union, Brian Cookson, has waded into the debacle saying: “To the many who have raised the issue of a certain women’s team kit, we are on the case. It is unacceptable by any standard of decency.”

what I didn’t realise was that people could still see it on the site. I reported it to eBay and they took it down, but by then it had gone viral. My boyfriend Andy thinks the whole thing is hilarious.’

Michelle Daniels is a professional vocalist and TV presenter who has performed in top Marbella venues such as La Sala, Tikitano and Regina’s. At any one of her gigs, expect to hear songs ranging from ABBA to the Supremes and Amy Winehouse. Nickname: Not that I know of (but I’m sure there are)

Best advice ever given: Live each day as your last because one day you’ll be right.

How long have you been singing: My mum told me I started talking and singing at the same time!

What are you listening to: You can’t beat a bit of Motown...
If you were an animal what would you be: A bat... I’ve always been in showbusiness therefore after so many years I’m nocturnal by nature.

You’ve sung all over the world, best gig: Stepping out onto the stage at Bergan football stadium in front of 10,000 people, it was my first step of an international career, I was 18. Worst gig and why: Trying to stand still on stage and sing a ballad on a cruise ship in a force 10 gale. What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you on stage: There are a couple that spring to mind, the first being when my hairpiece fell off in the middle of a production show and secondly, whilst fire eating on stage as a dancer I set fire to my arm! Best thing about being a singer: Music is one of the biggest influences in my life and is fundamentally enriching. I enjoy connecting with my audience during my shows and like it when the dancefloor is full with people dancing and happy. Worst thing: Driving home at silly o clock and being stopped by the Guardia Civil and breathalised, 3 or 4 times per month, every month. Favourite song: Thankyou for the music, for the many memories this song holds. Greatest achievement: My son – Rio. 05 98 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

Ideal dinner party guest: Allan Carr.

Funniest pick up line used on you:
As I waited backstage, microphone in hand ready to start my cabaret on the cruise ship, my now husband Chris (who was the Captain) approached me and said ‘If you dedicate a song to me I’ll take you for dinner’ so I did and he took me for dinner as promised, unknown to him as he had just embarked , he took me to the all inclusive restaurant rather than the a la carte. Best pick up line you’ve used: Never needed to! What did you want to be growing up: Always a singer. I used to cover my Colgate dispenser in tin foil and sing along to the ‘Pet Shop Boys’ I can’t believe I’ve just told you that! Best character trait: I’m a go getter. Worst habit: How long have you got?

What do you do to relax: Spending time with my family & running
