EDITOR’S NOTE W elcome to the March issue of Marbella Rocks Magazine. Oscar Fever is firmly upon us in the Marbella Rocks Office. The 87th Academy Awards were a show-stopping event heaped in tears, tantrums and wardrobe malfunctions. Although most of the Vanity Fair after-show party ones were deliberate, as stars including J-Lo, Rita Ora and Heidi Klum wore such scantily clad dresses, underwear was not an option! Our very own fashion stylist Zahra Andersen gives you the pick of the Best & Worst dressed at the Oscars, as well as a behind the scenes look at what goes into recreating these million dollar red carpet looks and how a dress choice can make or break a career. Plus, we´re excited to announce the very first Marbella Awards 2015. We´ve picked the best of the best in each category from Beach Club, Restaurant, Hotel and Nightclub - we´ve got every area covered. And now we´re handing the power over to you, the Marbella public, to decide the winners.Voting begins on March 15th and will close on May 31st with a starstudded awards bash to be announced shortly. Elsewhere, we have a guide to the best supercars released in 2015 and two exclusive interviews; rebel fashion designer Gail Berry and Bob Marley´s nephew Charles Mattocks. Also, you may have noticed our new sleeker and sexier design? Like many of you, we´re getting ready for the summer and wanted a fresh look, courtesy of the fabulous former Marie Claire designer, Christina. Hope you like it. As usual, comments on an email or one of our social media channels below please!

everyone’s talking about... AMBER ROSE Vs THE KARDASHIANS Everyone loves a good celebrity slagging match but it seems this is an out- and-out war between Amber Rose and the whole Kardashian clan. Amber, Kanye West’s former girlfriend, has rather blatantly made her thoughts known on Twitter, calling Kim Kardashian a “whore” and both Kim and her sisters “plastic assholes”. According to Radar Online, Amber’s so fired up because Kanye cheated on her with nowwife Kim plus Kim also outed her for her stripper past. According to Amber, Kim started sending Kanye racy pics of herself despite Amber’s pleas to leave him alone as they were dating. “I was like, Kim just stop. Don´t be that person. I thought at least she’d be that woman enough to respond to me. She never responded. She’s a complete homewrecker.”
If that isn’t enough, Amber has recently attacked the 25-year-old rapper Tyga for dating 17-yearold Kylie Jenner (the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan) saying that “he should be ashamed of himself.” She also called Kylie a “baby” claiming that she “should be tucked up in bed at 7pm.” Khloe Kardashian waded into protect her sister, posting on Twitter: “She was a stripper since she was 15 years old. So please don’t worry about my sister who has a career and her s*** together at ONLY 17. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.” A further retaliation from Amber’s camp came back saying that “Khloe should keep her mouth shut as she’s not even Kylie’s sister!” This goes back to rumours that OJ Simpson was actually Khloe’s real father.
PINK WEARS NOTHING BUT A SMILE Never one to be the shy retiring type, Pink has gone one step further - ditching her clothes to be photographed naked for PETA’S ‘Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur’ campaign. The international ad campaign kicked off in New York where a billboard of Pink – minus clothes, was put up in Times Square to mark the start of Fashion Week in the city. While Pink advocates not killing for fur, she has admitted being “selfish” in the past. “I would like to say I’ve always been fur free. Unfortunately, I went
8

through a selfish phase and wore fur on a couple of occasions. But I wised up and now boycott fur completely. I wish everyone was forced to learn the horrors that these animals go through for fashion trends.” “I hope fur-wearers get bitten in the ass by the same kind of animal they wear on their back,” Pink added. She joins the ranks of PETA campaigners Pamela Anderson, Eva Mendes and Naomi Campbell who have all been photographed naked to support the animal welfare organisation.

LADY GAGA OFF THE MARKET The ‘Bad Romance’ singer has just been proposed to by long-term boyfriend Taylor Kinney with a heartshaped sparkler on Valentine’s Day. The singer and her actor fiancé first met on the set of Gaga’s ‘You and I’ music video. Ironically, Gaga wore her mother’s actual wedding gown in some scenes in the racy video, which starred Kinney as her love
interest. The couple dated for a few months and split in 2012, but quickly rekindled the romance after a month apart. Gaga even recently admitted in an interview that she would marry 33 year-old Kinney if he proposed. “He is the right guy,” she gushed. “How do we know? It’s this feeling...” Kinney, has also spoken fondly about the 28-year-old
singer, admitting that she pushes him to be better. “You know, I love what she does and her work and music and charity. She inspires so many people including myself.” As for what their wedding will look like? Gaga has already joked, “When I get married, I’ll be hanging out in a pickup truck at a David’s Bridal while my stylist is screaming at me.”
SCARLETT FORMS GIRL BAND JAMIE DORNAN´S NAKED SHOOT ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ hunk Jamie Dornan has been left red faced after pictures from a naked photoshoot he took part in at the start of his career have been spread over the internet. The pictures, showing Jamie in a car with another naked male and female model, were part of an ad campaign for US clothing label Abercrombie & Fitch, back in 2002 when Jamie was only 20. ‘27 Dresses’actress Malin Akerman, who is also in the ad, is believed to have brought these fine pictures to our attention. The blonde captioned her Instagram post with: “#tbt to the very naked cover of
Abercrombie circa 2002 (?) w none other than Mr Grey himself @jamiedornan #50shadesofgrey #nakedisthebestwaytosellclothes ?!.” The news comes as ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ has exceeded all box office expectations, pulling in $85 million on its opening weekend.
Scarlett Johansson has formed a girl group called The Singles and the band are releasing their first single this month. Called ‘Candy’ the track is the debut number by Johansson and her band, which includes Julia Haltigan, Kendra Morris, The Jealous Girlfriends’ Holly Miranda, and Haim sister and Taylor Swift pal Este Haim. The track features an electronic backtrack and lyrics of, “Boy, you got me craving sweets again, cause boy, my tooth be aching for your skin, boy, you’ve got me in the mood for love, cause boy, you’re my chocolate from above, you’re the candy to my heart, ooooh, candy to my heart.” At least if it all goes horribly wrong then she has her acting to fall back on. Probably more chance of an Oscar win over a Grammy for Scarlett.

hic Marbella cocktail bar Freudenhaus is introducing a regular Thursday night event to its roster of impressive soirees. ‘One Night Stand’ is all about pioneering and championing mixologists. It will bring cocktail mixology culture to Marbella by handing over control of the bar to one professional, famous bartender each week allowing them to show their wares, cocktail bests and flairing techniques. Mixologists will come from all around the world including Milan, London and Austria. The head bartender from one of New York´s most famous cocktail bars is also signed up to grace Spain´s shores this summer. “It’s about giving the stage to passionate bartenders around the world to share their passion, skills and trends in the mixology world. It is the same as culinary – with the same level of understanding flavours, to find new surprising blends within unexpected pairings. Yet we never Michelin Star our mixologists!” Rauni Tillisoo, one of the owners of Freudenhaus says. Maybe a Freudenhaus star system is needed in the mixology world?!
“The cocktail business is not about quantity it’s about quality and we strongly believe that there is a gap in Marbella with that,” Rauni adds. “We want to encourage bartenders to continuously explore, test, mix and challenge themselves and at the same time enjoy the crowd who appreciate the effort that has been put into their delicious cocktails. We like classics, we like modern we like the flair bartending as its exciting and fun to watch - and most of all, we like Freudenhaus the masters who really love and enjoy their job.” Freudenhaus opened its doors in July last year and the place has been packed out since. The only true cocktail tasting experience has to be done at Freudenhaus in Puerto Banus. Regular events include guest DJ´s, cabaret, burlesque and fashion shows. Every Friday and Saturday the best local and international DJ talent comes to Freudenhaus. Plus, last year a famous graffiti artist performed a one-off event where he spray painted a 10 metre sheet of cling film in front of the live audience of Freudenhaus partygoers. MERCEDES AMG-GT
Mercedes’ replacement for their bowed-out SLS Supercar comes in the form of this shorter and lighter rear-wheeldrive AMG GT. The car features a long bonnet and swooping roofline making use of more carbon and aluminium than its predecessor. Also it does not feature gullwing doors. There will be two versions released at the end of 2015: a ´base´ model with 456 bhp and a 503 bhp GT S version. These deliver speeds of 0 – 100 km an hour in 4 and 3.8 seconds respectively. Price: From €120,000 Released: End of 2015
ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA If you´ve got big bucks and want to own a rare car, there are only 100 Lagondas being produced at €400,000 a pop. (And reportedly only sold in the Middle East - so you´ll have to fork out the airfare to get it here too!) This will be a classic piece of machinery though as Aston Martin is reviving the Lagonda brand, which was its most popular car back in 1976. All the latest modern technology has been applied to this rebrand including carbonfibre bodywork and LED lights. With a rumoured 6 litre V-12 engine reaching 600 horsepower, this will be a car to be reckoned with. Price: €500,000 Released: Late 2015/Early 2016

ROLLS-ROYCE WRAITH DROPHEAD coupé Billed as the “most potent and technologically advanced Rolls-Royce in history” the popular Wraith will now be available in convertible or “drophead Coupé” as the car manufacturer calls it. ONE TO WATCH: BENTLEY BENTAYAGA A Bentley source has told Marbella Rocks exclusively, “This is definitely the biggest car release of 2016. The new Bentley Bentayaga will be redefining the SUV category,
previously dominated by Range Rover and Porsche. It´s been a long time coming with rumours of its release dating back to 2012. It will be one of the most expensive in the SUV category but will ooze luxury and elegance.” However our source told us that the finished product is tipped to be very different from the concept pictures. MEMORIES FROM MOTHER’S DAY
Mother’s Day was first officially celebrated in 1910 in West Virginia in the US. Anna Jarvis spent 5 years campaigning to get the day established as a recognised holiday to commemorate the death of her own beloved mother and to celebrate mother’s around the world as, “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.” Due to the campaign efforts of Jarvis, US President Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation creating Mother’s Day as a national holiday. It is now celebrated across the world: in the UK it’s March 15th and in Spain it is May 3rd. However it was not a happy ending for Jarvis. She was not happy with how the big card companies like Hallmark got on board and monetised the event, saying it was the exact opposite of what she wanted the day to be about, love not money. She died in 1948 without ever being a mother herself.

REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN. SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process.
STEP 1
OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ. eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st
registration.
STEP 2
CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car.
STEP 3
RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds).
STEP 4
OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly
display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars.
STEP 5
OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band.
YOU CAN CARRY OUT ALL THESE PROCEDURES YOURSELF OR YOU CAN SEEK THE ASSISTANCE OF AN ACCOUNTANT TO DO THIS FOR YOU. WE HOPE THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS ARTICLE IS OF INTEREST. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CONTACT LINEA DIRECTA PLEASE CALL 902 123 161 MORE INFORMATION ON LINEA DIRECTA ONLINE AT WWW.LINEADIRECTA.COM

RECIPE
If you’re anything like the Marbella Rocks team, to really appreciate your nights out there’s nothing quite like a relaxing night in. Cue DVD, dinner and a good bottle of wine. Here’s a rundown and recipe for a quality night in.
THAI RED CHICKEN CURRY
This Thai Red Chicken Curry recipe is so simple and is ready in under 30 minutes, it’s the perfect dish for midweek or even a dinner party with friends. Fresh ginger and coriander add plenty of zing, as well as a beautiful colour to the dish. Best of all, you can adjust the heat with chilli powder to make it just how you and your guests like it. INGREDIENTS ● 1tbsp vegetable oil ● 1 onion, finely chopped ● 2 cloves garlic, chopped ● 1tsp grated fresh ginger ● 2-3tbsp Thai red curry paste ● 1kg (1lb) chicken thigh fillets, cut into 3cm pieces ● 300ml (9fl oz) coconut milk ● 250g (8oz) green beans, chopped into 5cm in length ● 1-2tbsp fresh coriander leaves ● Chilli powder (to taste) DIRECTIONS 1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan and add the onions, garlic and ginger. Cook over a medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 3 minutes. Add the curry paste and cook, stirring for 1 minute. Add the chicken and cook, stirring occasionally for 2 minutes. 2. Add the coconut milk and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes. The sauce should have reduced and thickened by this stage. 3. Add the beans, stir well and cook for about 5 minutes, or until tender. There should be enough sauce to easily coat the meat. If the mixture is very liquid, increase the heat and simmer until reduced. 4. Season, adding in chilli powder to taste if required, and serve topped with a handful of coriander leaves, accompanied with steamed rice.

WINE MATCH This month’s Thai Chicken Red curry is spicy and delicious - perfect for these cold nights! Try a German Kabinett Riesling - while considered a “dry wine,” the hint of residual sugar in the wine, along with its vibrant acidity, will quench the fire of the chilli. Portugal’s Vinho Verde, a light, crisp, refreshing white with a bit of fizz, is another great partner for red chicken curry dishes. Alternatively a French Beaujolais from Brouilly which is aromatic, jammy and soft - the perfect accompaniment to beef or pork red curry (if you decide to substitute the chicken that is!). Tannic wines can fuel the fire of spicy Thai dishes, so please avoid. So if you are a red wine lover, then try something with lower tannins such as Pinot Noir or Rioja. A sparkling wine such as Champagne, Prosecco or Cava would also be a perfect match. They cut the richness of coconut milkbased Thai curries, and they also refresh the palate after
such a highly seasoned dish. The ultimate match for the Wine Angel would be an aromatic wine. The absolute complement to fragrant dishes. The aromas of some wines just jump out of the glass; the mango and orange blossom fragrance in Viognier; Riesling’s peach and apricot notes; Sauvignon Blanc’s distinctive gooseberry, lime and herbaceousness; and the hint of violet in Cabernet Franc. Thai curries and stir fries are often equally aromatic, with the inclusion of ingredients like Thai basil, coriander, ginger, limes and lemongrass. Try something new today! Salut!

GONE GIRL As is often said… “Marriage can be a real killer!” This clever thriller, based on the New York Times bestseller novel of the same name is fast paced, deliciously dark and will definitely have you on the edge of your seats. The film begins with the disappearance of suburban housewife, Amy Dunne, played by the striking Brit actress Rosamund Pike. Her husband Nick Dunne, portrayed by a heavier Ben Affleck, is the first and only suspect. Well, for a good part of the movie, that is. So did he or didn’t he kill her? We lurch from feeling pity for this seemingly devoted husband to outright suspicion, as snippets from Amy’s diary, read in voice-over by the missing Amy and accompanied by flashbacks, hint that things may not be what they seem. But just when you think you’ve got the plot all sussed out, things change and the plot morphs again. Without giving too much away about this unpredictable squeaker, let it be said that it’s definitely worth a watch. The David Fincher film received only one Oscar nomination for Rosamund Pike as Best Actress, although many film pundits believe it unfairly missed out on a Best Picture nod.. ROCKS RATING
BOOK REVIEW
HUNGER GAMES MOCKINGJAY PART 1 Science fiction film ‘Hunger Games’ sets up the franchise finale loaded with an abundance of action and political subtext in this penultimate chapter. The film sees heroine Katniss Everdeen, played by the superbly brilliant Jennifer Lawrence, landing in District 13, having shattered the Hunger Games forever. She is forced to fight to save the Districts and her friend Peeta, played by Josh Hutcherson. She is seen by the world as a symbol of courage and by leading the rebellion she attempts to overthrow the Capital under the leadership of President Coin. Like its predecessors, ‘Mockingjay Part 1’ was a commercial box office success grossing $55 million on its opening day, making it the largest Vopening day of 2014. The film went to the No. 1 spot with a $122 million gross, becoming the biggest opening of 2014 and marking ‘The Hunger Games’ film series as the only franchise to have 3 films earn over $100 million in a weekend. The final chapter, ‘Mockingjay Part 2’, is due for cinema release in November 2015 with the DVD release earmarked for March 2016. ROCKS RATING
WOLF WINTER A visually acute and skillfully written, historic thriller set in 1700’s Sweden. Maija, her husband Paavo and daughters Frederika and Dorotea arrive from their native Finland, hoping to forget the traumas of their past and put down new roots in this harsh but beautiful Swedish land. Above them looms Blackasen, a mountain whose foreboding presence looms over the valley and whose dark history seems to haunt the lives of those who live in its shadow. While herding the family’s goats on the mountain, Frederika happens upon the mutilated body of one of their neighbours, Eriksson. The death is dismissed as a wolf attack, but Maija feels certain that the wounds could only have been inflicted by another man. Compelled to investigate despite her neighbours’ strange disinterest in the death and the fate of Eriksson’s widow, Maija is drawn into the dark history of tragedies and betrayals that have taken place on Blackasen. Soon, Maija discovers the true cost of survival under the mountain, and what it will take to make it to Spring.

There’s not only the organisational worry, but the concerns about whether things are going to be alright on the night: routines remembered, costumes not malfunctioning and packing out a 500 audience-strong theatre. However, it’s all in a day’s work for DanceWorks owner and artistic director, Jacqui Morgan, who is preparing for the school’s 10th anniversary show in San Roque later this month. This will be her tenth production and will feature new routines as well as a selection of “highlights” from previous shows. The audience will be treated to dance and musical theatre interpretations from ‘Riverdance’, ‘Mary Poppins’, ‘Mamma Mia’ and much more. “There’s always the hope that this will be my best show yet,” Jacqui confides. “There is some really super choreography and I believe that this year we’ll have the best trained group of students ever.” Previous years’ shows have always been a great success, so Jacqui is quietly confident that 2015 will be the same. However, she admits that organising shows of this quality is never plain sailing. Every effort ensures the students also enjoy their performances, and that includes many hours of rehearsal and a great deal of back-stage organisation. This

helps to give the dancers ‘onstage’ confidence. However the best-laid plans can occasionally go astray… Jacqui remembers these moments all too well. “We’ve had panics backstage: once a student got locked in the bathroom minutes before being due on stage, another time, a dancer sat innocently in the audience, watching the other routines when her group appeared onstage and she had to move at the speed of light to get into costume to join the routine half way through!” “I have put on productions of the ‘Wizard of Oz’, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘The Jungle Book’, and inevitably have had to mop up the tears of those who weren’t cast in ‘lead roles’, the part they had ALL been dreaming of for weeks! The process is fraught with delicate emotions and has to be handled with great care – for both students and their doting parents!!” Jacqui adds.
DANCEWORKS ORIGINS Jacqui has owned and run the popular Sotogrande-
based dance school for ten years, drawing students from Marbella to Gibraltar. DanceWorks was established in 2005, as the brainchild of Jacqui, who herself was an RAD trained ballet dancer and has been teaching in the area for 20 years. She always knew a ballet school would work locally. Yet, she had the vision to make it an all-encompassing dance school, including other genres of dance: jazz, tap, modern and hip-hop. While Jacqui taught the ballet, she brought jazz/tap instructor Fiona and French-born hiphop master Cyril on board and the DanceWorks brand was officially born. Fast-forward ten years and the school is now more vibrant than ever and additionally offers: gymnastic dance, ‘poptastic’ routines and musical theatre classes to the students. All dance subjects come with internationally recognised IDTA examinations and certificates for students. DanceWorks also collaborates with other professional performers in local Spanish
NEWS
events. While Fiona and Cyril are no longer the regular teachers at DanceWorks, after seven and eight years’ commitment respectively, Jacqui has now brought in trained graduate dancers who have also gained their IDTA teaching qualifications to teach the jazz, tap and hip hop to keep things “young and fresh”. “Dance is always changing, so it´s good to bring in new teachers to keep a young vibe going,” Jacqui says. Although she is delighted to reveal that Fiona is returning to help with choreography for the 10th anniversary show. “Fiona choreographed the original ‘Riverdance’ routine for us in 2007, which was one of the most outstanding routines we have ever produced. So her agreement to return and re-work this with the current students will be great for our big show,” Jacqui added. DanceWorks also has strong ties with a respected UK performing arts school and regularly feeds top students to them. They enjoy a reciprocal relationship as the UK teachers, all dance professionals with experience including the shows: ‘Cats’, ‘Starlight Express’, ‘Chicago’, ‘We Will Rock You’ and‘ Saturday Night Fever’ to name but a few, come over to Spain to teach at DanceWorks for it’s annual Summer School week held in August. And their top graduates come to her for additional training and teaching experience.
Clair Hardy, the current jazz/ tap and ‘poptastic’ teacher is the second student from the school to come to work at DanceWorks. “It´s a great working relationship for all involved,” she added.
THE INDUSTRY Jacqui admits she can be a stickler for perfection but insists this is merely what the industry requires. Her students train to be “the best possible dancers they can be” so if they wish to go on to have a dance career they will have the training and dedication to succeed. “Unfortunately the performing arts industry is ruthless and it’s all about being outstanding and aesthetically perfect. It´s a very competitive business where hundreds of dancers compete for one role, and girls do tend to feel these effects more than the boys, unfortunately. One of my dancers recently went to a high profile audition at Pineapple Studios in London. As usual there were hundreds of hopefuls vying for roles. The audition culled half the group within the first ten minutes…. Anyone not classically trained in ballet was out! So although dance has many facets, if you don’t have classical training then you may stumble at the first hurdle.” Jacqui explains. Having come from a line of purely classical training Jacqui is a strong believer in all areas
of dance being explored. “The structure in my school is to have the students for a minimum of two hours for up to eight hours a week, and in that time they gain all types of dance training. This combination of techniques inter-supports their musicality, flexibility, rhythm and ability to coordinate and there are not many who, when they actually get into it, reject it as a system.” The benefit of this is that they can be technically diverse and experience all genres of dance, so if dance or musical theatre is their preferred career choice they will be fully prepared and not limited to one area of expertise.
WE WILL ROCK YOU Jacqui admits that one of the most rewarding aspects of running these shows is the feedback from those who are totally surprised by the standard of the dancers and the quality of the shows produced. “I would say that it is normally fathers, 60% of whom may have been dragged to the venue to dutifully watch their children, who turn round to me and say, ‘Bloody hell that was fantastic, I had no idea how good that was going to be. I really enjoyed the evening!’ ” “I think we do so well because I don´t have kids ‘messing around’ on stage,” Jacqui says. “It´s impressive to get the students performing to a level that’s way outside their parents expectations and to put on a show that audiences really do enjoy.” If you are interested in watching the 10th anniversary show on Saturday March 21st at the Luis Gallardo Theatre in San Roque, please visit the DanceWorks Studio at Mar y Sol in Sotogrande or call Jacqui on: 609 841 748. Walk-ins are welcome on the night too. The show starts at 6.30pm and will finish around 9.30pm.

Celebrities, naturally, are a big influence when it comes to the way we want to look. According to a survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), member surgeons saw a 13% increase in requests for celebrityinspired procedures last year. However, the ‘selfie’ phenomenon is also driving more and more of us under the knife. “It can make people look at their faces in a hypercritical way – which

So when you use this medication for cosmetic purposes, it’s what we call ‘off label’ and you have to inform your patient. “One issue with it is that it was not meant to be injected under the skin and sometimes the dissolution of fat cells is not even, resulting in a bumpy appearance. There is a new medication designed for cosmetic purposes but it is still trial stage. “Crucially, you can’t use this technique on large amounts of fat; whatever you dissolve has to be eliminated by your liver. But the idea for this new medication is for use on submental fat (double chin), which makes sense.”

FEATURES THE PONYTAIL FACELIFT
Look in the mirror and scrape back your hair into a tight ponytail. Ta-dah! Your wrinkles magically disappear and everything is lifted back to positions they last held in the 1980s! This is certainly the cheapest way to achieve the effects of a facelift, but for a more permanent change consider the Ponytail Lift. The procedure is designed to mimic the improved appearance that comes with pulled back hair, with lifted brows, cheeks and jowls, and is minimally invasive. “The ‘pony tail facelift’ is simply a marketing name given to a treatment known as an endoscopic forehead lift,” says Dr. Kaye. “We tense the muscles of the mid-face and forehead by making some small incisions hidden in the hair. It’s not a new technique – it’s 30-years old! The endoscopic techniques are having a renaissance because of the trend towards minimally invasive procedures, which give great results with minimal down time.”
NON-SURGICAL NOSE JOB
If you’ve always wanted to change the shape of your nose but have been too afraid to take the plunge with full rhinoplasty, this could be the answer to your prayers. Liquid Rhinoplasty uses common dermal fillers, which are then sculpted to give the appearance of a real rhinoplasty. While the results are only temporary – lasting nine to 12 months - the upside is that the procedure is much less expensive and invasive than a traditional nose job. However it’s not the answer if you’re looking for a small and dainty nose, says Dr. Kaye: “The thing with rhinosculpturing is that you can only add, you can’t take away. If you have a hump in your nose, you can fill in before and after the hump to give a straight profile, but the nose will be bigger. “It can be a quick fix if you have a minor issue, but be sure to use

resolvable fillers or you may get problems down the line.”
FAT TRANSFER INJECTIONS
Taking fat from a flabby stomach and transferring it to one’s boobs has got to be every woman’s fantasy. And now it’s becoming a reality with a fat grafting procedure, which sees excess fat from one part of the body donated to another that lacks volume. Using ‘like for like’ in this way is said to produce longlasting and natural-looking results and Dr. Kaye says it is the most important change in plastic surgery technique in in the last 10 years. “There are a number of benefits to using fat as a filler,” he says. “In most people fat is available in abundance and can be harvested via a very minor procedure of micro lipo extraction. “Fillers are expensive; if you need 5-6mls for the face, we’re talking around €2,000, every eight months. If you have fat, you can have 20/30mls, or however much you need, and the price is the same. For fat transfer in the face it costs around €1,200. “Some people think fat transfer in the face is only temporary, that it does not hold. But it is not. We do have a certain reabsorption in the first three weeks. These are living stem cells and they have to find connections with blood vessels. Some will die, but those that connect live as a living fat cell. “This method gives great results. We can use it on areas that were very hard to treat before, like under the eyes, and it not only fills and plumps, the stem cells also have a rejuvenating effect on the skin. I combine this technique with all of my facial procedures.”
NEEDLE-FREE BOTOX
Scared of needles? Never fear, US-based Revance Therapeutics claims to be the first to have developed a gel version of Botox.
The gel, which is applied to the face topically, is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials, testing its efficacy on crows-feet. The manufacturers hope to get FDA approval in 2016. Dr. Kaye is optimistic it will work but says we will probably be waiting somewhat longer: “We use Botox in syringes because the molecule is too big to pass the dermal barrier,” he says. “The idea is to invent a carrier substance that can penetrate the skin and bring the Botox into the muscle. There are some sea animals that shoot spores with a neurotoxin that opens the skin, like a mosquito. Evidently, when you can include this kind of force in a cream you have topical Botox. This will work, but it might take another 10 years.

LD R O W S W E N A MOTHER´S
Miracle
A
ustralian mother Kate Ogg gave birth to twins Jamie and Emily just 26 weeks into her pregnancy, on the 25th of March 2010. Although Emily survived the birthing, Jamie was born in distress, not breathing. After doctors spent 20 minutes trying to resuscitate Jamie, they told Kate and her husband, David, that he had died, and nurses placed Jamie’s unmoving body onto his mother’s chest so she could say her final goodbye. But then the couple witnessed a miracle that still baffles the medical profession today. As Kate and her husband were saying goodbye to their deceased child, 10 minutes after
being pronounced dead, Jamie began to move. Nonetheless, the doctor present at the scene informed the parents such movements were simply reflex actions and were not indicative of life. So Kate and David braced themselves to spending an extra minute or two with the child they believed they would never know for more than just those few moments. “I wanted to meet him and to hold him and for him to know us,” Kate said. “If he was on his way out of the world, we wanted for him to know who his parents were and to know that we loved him before he died. We’d resigned ourselves to the fact we were going to lose him; we were just trying to make the most of those last precious moments.” That “extra minute or two” ended up stretching out to
away,’” Kate said. “But they stayed open!” As most of us probably would, at that point the couple began to consider the possibility their child wasn’t dead at all. “I think half of us said, ‘What if he actually makes it?’” David said. “’If he does, this would just be a miracle’. The other half was saying, ‘No, he’s been declared dead, this is purely instinct.’” David and Kate were practicing what Australians call ‘kangaroo care’. Interestingly, it is widely practiced throughout the world, especially in poorer countries where incubators may not be available for premature babies. An infant is held skin-to-skin to their mother, generating heat for the newborn much like a baby kangaroo receives in its mother’s pouch. Luckily, Kate was familiar with ‘kangaroo care’. “When a baby is born all of a sudden there isn’t the warmth or smell of the mother or the sound of their heartbeat. And so putting him back on my chest was as close to him being inside me where he was safe.” Jamie continued to come around as he lay across Kate’s chest. He began grabbing at his mother’s finger, as well as his father’s. And when Kate put a dab of breast milk on her finger, Jamie eagerly accepted it. At this point Kate truly began
“She instinctively did what she did. If she hadn’t then Jamie probably wouldn’t be here.” David Ogg.

more than two hours. And then something even more remarkable than Jamie’s previous movements took place: the supposedly dead child opened his eyes. “We thought, ‘What a blessing, we get to see his eyes before he passes

believing her baby was actually alive: “We thought, ‘He’s getting stronger, he’s not dead,’” she said. She and David called for the doctor to come and take another look at Jamie. Kate said the doctor was in disbelief when he arrived back at the bedside. “He got a stethoscope, listened to Jamie’s chest and just kept shaking his head. He said, ‘I don’t believe it, I don’t believe it.’” Dr. Lisa Eiland of the Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York said there may actually be a solid scientific grounding for what seemed like a miracle. “What’s important is the warmth that the mother provides and the stimulation that the baby may have received from hearing the mother’s heartbeat. So those are
all things that may have helped the baby in terms of going down the path to living as opposed to the path of death.” The prevalence of so-called ‘kangaroo care’ has increased in neonatal intensive care units since Jamie’s story was told to the world. A recent survey found that 82% of responding institutions used the practice. The report notes that individual policies may vary as to when such contact is allowed. To commemorate Jamie and Emily´s fifth birthday this month and to tie in with Mother’s Day, leading healthcare brand Johnson’s have brought out a poignant ‘You Tube’ video on Jamie’s miraculous survival story.

SO THIS MONTH‘S CLUB OF THE MONTH IS… FINCA CORTESIN
BEST POINTS:
THE PARTICULARS: Finca Cortesin is the most famous golf course on the Costa del Sol, being home to the Volvo World Match Play Championship in 2009, 2011 and 2012. Rory McIlroy has called it “spectacular” and Golf Digest Magazine has incorporated it into its top 10 courses in Spain. The 18-hole Finca Cortesin course was designed by world famous golf architect, Cabbel B Robinson, and was inaugurated in 2006. In addition, First Lady Michelle Obama and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have even chosen to stay in the popular, neighbouring Finca Cortesin Hotel during their trips to Southern Spain. Plus a staggering 87% of reviewers from Trip Advisor gave Finca Cortesin an “excellent rating.” The rest were all “Very Good!” So what´s all the fuss about?

The Greens. Many call them the ‘Jewel of the Cortesin’. Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia said, “The greens are impressive and have nothing to envy the Augusta National for their quality and speed.” Finca Cortesin pride themselves on Bermuda fairways and course maintenance is their first and main objective. Plus, the architecture and design of this course reeks of excellence and you will see truly breathtaking views of the local Spanish mountains during your game.
FEATURES WORST POINTS: It is definitely hard to pick a fault with Finca Cortesin but would have to say that it being a 30-minute drive from Marbella to reach Casares up towards the mountains would be its only downfall. Not as easily accessible as other golf courses if players only come for a weekend golf break. Also it´s on the pricier side although book early and you can receive good discounts.
FRIENDLY: Yes and the service and additional touches are exceptional. Buggies with GPS, complimentary fruit and cold water on the course, as well as a chilled towel service during the summer season.
TRICKY HOLES: Yes, several. A difficult Par 5 on Hole 5 is the one to watch with a very tight fairway. Plus, what I´ve aptly named the jigsaw puzzle on Hole 15 for the myriad of bunkers and a water hazard, which is not even visible from this picture.
GLOBAL GOLF NEWS Playing golf at night is considered by most as pretty pointless task. However, several US and UK companies have recently set up Night Golf, with LED-infused balls and light-up greens, tees and flags to make the seemingly impossible, possible. One group based across the pond is taking their fledgling company global by visiting top international golf courses to play the sport. Having played in the US, Dominican Republic and the UK, the company is now looking to secure top European Golf Clubs as host venues, with Spain on their hit-list of target countries. A spokesman for the company, said, “The balls provide the high performance aerodynamics, control, accuracy, feel and distance you expect from a professional, quality ball.” Plus, as a bonus for the sport and ‘bad golfers’, finding an LED golf ball at night is easier than finding a standard golf ball during the day. “The effect of watching night golf is quite mesmerizing,” says one keen player, “I love playing golf and now have twice as many hours in the day if I want to play.” Golf widows around the world are celebrating their husbands being able to spend more time with the family.
BUNKERS: There are 100 bunkers on this course and it´s a demanding par 72, 6,802 metres in length so it will test any golfers ability. However with 5 different teeoff points, the course can appeal to everyone.
GOLF LESSONS: Yes. The worldwide Nicklaus Academy offers lessons here. Created 25 years ago by the legendary player, Jack Nicklaus, whose career included 18 major Championships. Teachers still teach the philosophy of his world famous game.

GOLF NEWS The inaugural Spanish FootGolf Championships 2015 are being held at Rio Real Golf & Hotel in Marbella from March 6-8. The event is sanctioned by the world governing body of FootGolf, the FIFG and marks the season opening tournament in the 2015 European FootGolf Trophy Tour. In case you´re not familiar with the strangely named sport, it is exactly what it says on the tin: football on a golf course. Players start at the tee and have to get their ball into an enlarged green hole, missing the bunkers. Between 80 and 100 players from around the world will be competing in the March event, with prizes and cash of €1,500 up for grabs. Gareth Morcombe, the President of FootGolf Marbella said, “2015 is going to be the year that FootGolf really takes off as a worldwide sport and for FootGolf Marbella to be accorded the honour of hosting the opening event in the European FootGolf Trophy Tour reflects the increasing popularity of the sport here in Southern Spain.”

Oscars Uncovered This year’s 87th Academy Awards, held on the 22nd of February in Hollywood, was a show-stopping and politically charged event, with the coveted gongs going to Brit actor Eddie Redmayne for ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Birdman’ for ‘Best Picture’. Four-time nominee Julianne Moore finally won the ‘Best Actress’ award for ‘Still Alice’ while ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ scooped four awards in total. This was, without a doubt, the most politically charged Oscars night ever with winners of the coveted awards using their acceptance speeches to highlight world causes, which were brought to light through the films they starred in. Eddie Redmayne dedicated his ‘Best Actor’ award for the Stephen Hawking biography ‘The Theory of Everything’ to “all those people around the world battling motor neurone disease”, before praising Hawkings in particular: “It belongs to one exceptional family: Stephen, Jonathan, Jane and the Hawking children.” Patricia Arquette, who scooped the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ award for her role in Richard Linklater´s ‘Boyhood’ spoke emotionally about the campaign for equal pay for women. “To every women who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It´s
34 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 08
our time to have wage equality for once and for all, and equal rights to women in America,” she said, fighting to hold back her tears. Jennifer Lopez was overheard in the audience saying “Yes, go girl!” and Meryl Streep gave her a standing ovation.
Next up was ‘Birdman’ director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, who appealed on behalf of Mexican immigrants. “I just pray they (Mexicans) can be treated with the same dignity and respect of the ones that came before and built this incredible, immigrant nation,” he said. While this was heartfelt and moving to many, his statement, “Fear is the condom of life. It doesn´t allow you to enjoy anything,” can easily be hailed as the best quote of the night at this year´s Oscars! His speech prompted an outpouring of praise and pride for Mexico, with the hashtag #VivaMexico and #Inarritu trending on social media. His Oscar win marked the second year in a row a Mexican director has scooped the top prize (Alfonso Cuaron also won for Gravity in 2014). Elsewhere in the politically motivated night, ‘The Imitation Game’ screenwriter, Graham Moore, spoke movingly about depression and suicide while collecting his Oscar for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’. “I tried to commit suicide at 16 and now I’m standing here. I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she doesn’t fit in anywhere. You do. Stay weird. Stay different, and then when it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage please pass the same message along,” he said.
He was backed up by the winner of the ‘Best Documentary’ award Dana Perry, who mentioned that her son had killed himself, urging the billions of Oscars watchers to “talk about suicide out loud.” Moore also went on to stand up for gay rights. “Alan Turing never got to stand on a stage like this and look out at all of these disconcertingly attractive faces. And I do. And that’s the most unfair thing I think I’ve ever heard,” he said. Moore was referring to the tragic news that Alan Turing (the subject of the film who solved the Enigma Code) was prosecuted for homosexuality and killed himself at the age of 41 in 1954. Turing’s discovery has been cited as one of the main reasons that the Allied Forces were able to defeat Hitler’s Army. He was eventually pardoned posthumously for his crime. However Moore put it best backstage, saying: “This was my 45 seconds to go on television and say something, so I thought I might as well use it to say something meaningful.” So it seems that the majority of Oscars winners used their time in the spotlight to highlight important issues.

“Where was all the fun?” we hear you say... So luckily, it wasn´t all serious as Marbella Rocks highlights the BEST and MOST SCANDALOUS bits from the Awards ceremony and all the GOSSIP from the after parties! Dakota Johnson ripped into her Mum. ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ star Dakota and mother Melanie Griffith were being interviewed on the red carpet, and despite Melanie saying she was proud of her daughter starring in the soft-core BDSM movie, she confirmed that she would not see the film. Dakota retorted, “You can watch it.” Her mum refused so she turned and started swearing. It´s bleeped out but looks like she said “Jesus Christ!” Ouch. Brit actor and Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch wasn’t best pleased with the “no drinks in the auditorium rule” during the Oscars night and snuck in a hip flask of whisky. The bold actor didn´t even try and disguise it when the cameras panned in on him. Instead he held up his flask as if to say “Cheers!” Proper lad! Brit Richard Linklater´s film ‘Boyhood’ was beaten by ‘Birdman’ for ‘Best Picture’ and social media and Oscars pundits are calling this “the biggest snub in Oscar´s history”. Linklater´s film was shot over 12 years and shows the trials and tribulations children face growing up. Nominated for six awards (with many expecting it to clear up at this year’s awards) it took home only one for Patricia Arquette in the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ category. Sir Elton John hosted his annual Oscars viewing party with the likes of Miley Cyrus and Kylie Minogue in attendance. The charity event raised millons for his AIDS Foundation Charity. Was it the night of the no knickers? ‘Vanity Fair’ magazine held the main Oscars after-party and the majority of female leads changed into something less formal for this. Rumour has it that the plethora of lace and strapless gowns required a lot of female starlets to go commando. Rita Ora, Jennifer Lopez and Heidi Klum’s were the most revealing, with Rita´s derriere and half of Jen’s breast visible to surprised onlookers. Oscars host Neil Patrick Harris wasn´’ a patch on his predecessor Ellen De Generes. He attempted a rather out there joke on all the “very white” list of award nominees saying, “Tonight, we honour America´s best and whitest. Sorry, brightest.” Luckily it got better for the comedian and actor when he decided to strip down to his underwear to honour Michael Keaton’s character in ‘Birdman’ revealing a rather gorgeous and toned body and proving he’s game for a laugh. John Travolta snuck up behind and smooched his ‘A Love Song for Bobby Long’ co-star Scarlett Johansson on the red carpet unexpectedly. Scarlett, ever the professional, didn´t flinch at all as she was being snapped by the world’s Paparazzi.

OSCARS BEST
& WORST DRESSED
They may call this Hollywood´s biggest evening of the year but it´s also the most important night for fashion. Marbella Rocks fashion stylist Zahra Andersen brings you the Best & Worst dressed from the Oscars 2015.
Rita Ora has never looked better! Her stunning strapless Marchesa was the perfect choice for the glamorous Academy Awards. It’s always so hard for celebrities to stand out at such a high-profile event but we think Rita succeeded. I just would have liked to see her with hot red lipstick for pop of colour, which she normally does, so annoying she didn´t rock the look here.
ROCKS RATING:
When a supermodel arrives anywhere, you take notice. But when one shows up to the Oscars looking the way Chrissy Teigen did, you really take notice. The brunette babe wowed in a light blue, embellished Zuhair Murad gown, retro waves and dark burgundy lipstick. Perfect, just perfect.

Our cover girl Reese Witherspoon showed us how it´s done in a stunning black and white Tom Ford gown. Even if she didn´t take home that weighty statue, she´s still a winner in my book thanks to her fabulous monochrome red carpet look, a trend that’s going to be big the summer.
ROCKS RATING:
The redheaded beauty looked ravishing in a long-sleeve, chartreuse custom Elie Saab gown. While the night was really all about her nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Birdman,” we can’t stop talking about her dress (and that bright lipstick!). The only thing I would change would be the shoes. Too matchy matchy.
ROCKS RATING:
Dakota Johnson wowed on the red carpet in a stunning Yves Saint Laurent dress. It had such a beautiful line and while it was seemingly simple, the crystal rope detail on one shoulder gave it a little edge. The neckline fitted her perfectly and the colour definitely didn’t blend in with the carpet. If ever you’re not sure, keep it beautiful and simple, which is exactly what Dakota did. She received 4 rocks, not 5, because of her ponytail.

JLo was in a dramatic nude blush Elie Saab gown, which was dripping in sequins. Jennifer has been all about the low-cut necklines this award season and her Oscar ensemble was no exception. Indeed, the star embraced her inner diva with her Cinderella-esque gown. The only reason why it has 3 stars not 5 is the dress is way too long.
ROCKS RATING:
Well now we finally know what it would look like if Jesus was cast in a Singin’ in a band remake. But jokes aside, I surprisingly do quite like this pale pastel suit on Jared Leto, especially with the little “gee whizz, I hope I get lucky at the prom!” pink buttonhole. He’s still my ultimate ombre idol, and that lilac brings out his deep blue peepers. Only downside are those giant white clownish clodhoppers.
ROCKS RATING:
Is there really a person underneath all that fabric? Has Solange been attacked by a red parachute? No, this is an actual design by the usually wonderful Christian Siriano. What do we have here? A sheeny skivvy that then wraps and wraps and wraps and becomes ginormous pants. Most Knowles family members can pull off even the most unusual of designs, but no one suits looking like Gumby’s scarlet sister.
ROCKS RATING: 40 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 08
Marion Cotillard´s gown being from Dior was very predictable and the pattern of the dress was just a little weird. Marion normally smashes red carpets best dressed but she has earned herself a worst dressed mention because what in God’s name is happening with the back of her dress?! The black fastener gathers the dress into a strange cape-like pouch - it’s just a no, no on so many levels.
ROCKS RATING:
Felicity Jones and her matronly McQueen number in the unflattering hue of ashen-grey. The actress (well, her stylist) was doing so well this awards season. The bottom part looks like a duchesse satin costume crinoline that belongs better on a French aristocrat in revolutionary times. Unfortunately it’s an embellished mess on a get-up that has more drama than a Kanye West stage intervention.

Golden Mile Productions is a newly formed company with an experienced team working in London, Marbella and Los Angeles. The company´s aim is to bring more of the famous Hollywood filmmakers and actors to Marbella and its surrounding areas to shoot in the beautiful locations and venues that the Costa del Sol is most famous for. The first project for the group is ‘The Middle Man’, the autobiographical tale of Philip Howard, who was heavily involved in the criminal underworld in the eighties. Kevin Leslie and Ray Quinn head the cast. While Kara Tointon is tipped to play the female lead. The film was made from the bestselling book ‘Being The Middle Man’ and is due for release in November 2015. os Angeles stylists are combing through hotel suites stocked with couture and sifting through the vaults of luxury jewellers lining Rodeo Drive in search of the perfect gowns and accessories for their famous clients to wear on Oscar night. It’s an event that caps off a season of award shows. While the curtain is pulled back ever further on the inner workings of both Seventh Avenue and Tinseltown (sometimes too far, in the case of Sony Pictures’ recent Internet hack), there remains a disconnect between what viewers munching popcorn in front of their living room TV screens and fashion insiders see as the golden ticket. The former may swoon over a strapless princess gown while the latter applaud more avant garde choices, but, in either case, the shows and the images they generate equal hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for television networks, photo agencies and fashion houses. Making it onto a best-dressed list during the awards season can be a star-making turn for any actor or actress. And there is big business involved. Brands that pop up on the red carpet get valuable exposure that sharply boosts sales. All of which means celebrity stylists wield considerable power. The red carpet has become a serious business, a battleground where actresses demonstrate their ability to conform to a high and narrow standard of glamour. A mis-step can be detrimental to an actor’s status, while a reputation as an actor with a wardrobe to watch, can endear a celeb to the world. A whole cottage industry of criticism has cropped up around celebrity dressing that includes everyone from the snobbiest of fashion critics, to the blogosphere, where the spectrum runs from Perez Hilton to Jezebel. Not for nothing did ‘Gone With the Wind’ win eight Oscars at the 1940 Academy Awards. Its producer, David O Selznick, was the Harvey Weinstein of his day: a past master of awards campaigning. Four years after that triumph, he hired a model and bit-part actress named Anita Colby to groom Jennifer Jones, star of ‘The Song for Bernadette’, for the Oscars’ red carpet. Wearing a knee-length, black taffeta dress with a white ruffled collar, Jones went on to win the award for Best Actress (and several years later, would marry Selznick). Until then, the studios had relied on their in-house costume designers to dress their stars during awards season. But Colby was arguably the first of a new
FASHION
Hollywood species, bred to navigate the intersection of film and fashion that is today’s red carpet: the celebrity stylist. The term stylist didn’t come in to fashion world until the mid-1990s. Early power players included Jessica Paster, who wowed the world with Kim Basinger’s Escada gown in 1998, and Phillip Bloch who dressed Halle Berry for the Oscars in plum Elie Saab in 2002. Rachel Zoe, who rose to fame styling Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie in the mid2000s, used her celebrity styling gig to launch an empire that now includes two clothing lines and a brand that is as famous as Richie and Lohan! The new breed of Hollywood stylists have lowkey public personas. They include Kate Young, who worked at Vogue, first as Anna Wintour’s assistant and then as a marketing editor; Elizabeth Stewart, a veteran of the style department at the New York Times Magazine, and Nicole Chavez, who began her career in the wardrobe department of ‘The O.C.’ While this new sorority of influencers are willing to take a more behind-the scenes role, they’re still high-earners. Top stylists earn in the high threefigures for a day of work during the awards show season—picked up for most often by the movie studio responsible for their client’s latest star turn. It’s not for nothing. The pressure on the chosen few Oscar stylists to get it right is enormous. As a stylist you have to be both ahead of the curve and perennially focused on the next red carpet. For a stylist, it’s always about the upcoming look. Once on assignment to dress a client for the Oscars, as a stylist I like to start early and plan.
Usually it’s pretty hectic though because the people we work with have millions of events to go to, and they are often shooting movies or travelling, so we just have to squeeze fittings in when we can. As the lynchpins in the process, celebrity stylists face ever-growing pressure from not only the biggest fashion companies but also from the most powerful movie studios to help produce the images that can further help propel a film’s box office and launch an actor’s endorsement deals. As a stylist I prefer custom-made dresses as they’re unique and special. Making that custom dress for the award (and often several are made so there are options) involves a review of numerous sketches and fabric swatches with clients and designers and hours of labor on the part of a designer’s atelier.
The Big Day The day of the awards show is actually calmer than the weeks leading up to the ceremony. It’s fun because it’s all settled—the decisions have all been made. I spend the morning chatting with hair and makeup [stylists] and our client. This is the end of a long run of awards so it’s always a little bit of a relief and super exciting because it’s the most important one. The biggest misconception around getting a star ready for the red carpet is the amount of research that proceeds choosing the outfit. We do a lot of due diligence to make sure that we have seen everything out there. So much goes into producing one red carpet look. There is so much

more involved than just picking out a dress!
Getting the Client Ready Despite the stress involved, there are certainly perks to the job. My favourite part is getting to touch and see so much incredible stuff—museum quality couture, the finest, biggest, rarest jewels in the world, handmade artisanal accessories. It doesn’t get more beautiful, artistic or special than the things that come out at this time of year.
Red Carpet Nerves Still, the awards show looms—and a billion people

will be watching. As stylists we need to remains level headed about the attention. Our clients agree that if they love a look and we love a look, we are good to go, there is no need to please the entire world. As for what makes a great Oscar gown, I think it’s something that will get people talking. I always think about the chartreuse Christian Dior haute couture gown Nicole Kidman wore to the Oscars in 1997. It was just so unexpected. Today, the Oscars red carpet is a shop front not only for designers and stylists, but also for stars. In 2004, a year after winning an Oscar for ‘The Hours’, Nicole Kidman was named the new face of Chanel No 5. The same year, after winning Best Actress for ‘Monster’, Charlize Theron signed a multi-million-dollar deal to be the face of Dior’s
FASHION
J’Adore, a position she still occupies. Sometimes, a stylist will be responsible for negotiating deals between an actress and a fashion house, whereby the star will wear the brand to a certain number of red carpet events per year. Day to day, though, the stylist’s job is more mundane: trawl the designer boutiques of LA and NYC in search of suitable looks for their client roster. Being the ‘Best Dressed’ pays, says Bronwyn Cosgrave, journalist and author of ´Made For Each Other’: “Awards season used to be solely a networking affair, where actresses would schmooze with executives to get their next role. But today, the luxury conglomerates all enlist celebrity spokespeople, and it’s about getting the Louis Vuitton campaign or the Omega watch campaign.” The stylist Jeanne Yang who sent a pregnant Natalie Portman out in Rodarte at the Oscars, said looking back on the red carpet looks she has been responsible for: “It’s a little like hearing a song on the radio that reminds you of someone or smelling a perfume that I wore five years ago. They all mean a lot to me.” The men’s game is also heating up. Yang, who for years has been dressing Best Lead Actor nominee Michael Keaton (he scored both SAG and Golden Globe), is fortunate to have both a sample size star (he’s 5 feet 11 inches with a 32-34” waist and a 4852” suit size) and one with a great sense of personal style. “What’s amazing is when you have the opportunity to go into the closet of someone who’s had a storied career and who knows his stuff,” she said. “He knows the difference between a spread and a pointed collar, the advantage of a roped shoulder, the subtle nuance in fabrics. We speak each other’s language, and that makes working with him both a collaboration and a pleasure.” We see the myriad of options now available for men, plus the greater acceptance of new colours and styles and an overall fashion awareness, playing directly into their strengths.

GAIL BERRY FASHION REBEL WITH A CAUSE
G
GLOBE TROTTER
ail Berry is a successful designer, stylist and a soon-to-be Marbella resident. Her designs have been picked up by some of the world’s most famous faces, including Madonna, Prince, Kate Middleton and Helena Bonham Carter. In an exclusive interview with Marbella Rocks, Gail spills the beans on how she broke the rules and became a respected fashion designer by giving women what they really want.
REBELLIOUS STREAK Gail grew up in a creative family. Her mother, Madeleine Mono, was a successful actress turned make-up entrepreneur. Her family’s business was making coats and suits for Harrods, so she used to spend a lot of time in the shops, factories and at fashion shows and events. Even before she was five Gail knew this is what she wanted to do. “I believe you find out who you are in life very early on,” Gail recalls. “The earliest story I can remember was getting into trouble at school. I had a very boring wool skirt school uniform in my primary school but when I used to go to parties, I would wear dresses with beautiful, big petticoats underneath. I remember looking in the mirror and thinking how much better this old, boring school skirt looked with a petticoat! So I went
54 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 08
to school wearing it the next day and the headmistress called my mother to come and collect me.” She laughs at the memory, “I was told I had broken the school rules and in particular that I looked like a ‘lampshade’ to which my mother replied, ‘Don’t take any notice of that woman. She’s just jealous, you look like a beautiful lampshade.’” “That was the first time I ever decided to take something and change it,” Gail confesses. “So when I went onto my next school, I had my very own blazer and skirt made, a different tie and I had a pair of shoes from Gucci. I was very out there at school! But then this is a blessing as my whole career has been about taking things and changing them so they actually look better.”
After her studies Gail went to live in the United States where she decided to start a customising business. “I would buy T-shirts from Woolworths, cut off the sleeves and hand-paint them myself. Within a few months I had my T-shirts in 21 stores across New York City. Then I went to Washington where I started customising tracksuits.” Among her clientele was the Kennedy family. After her time in the US, Gail moved back to London to start a family and spent a few years away from the fashion scene. Gail couldn’t shake her penchant for fashion design though and her quest for the perfect pencil skirt led her to take the plunge in starting new boutiques in London’s sought after spots of Chelsea and the New King’s Road. “I found a really lovely Greek woman in a dry cleaners where I used to take my pencil skirts to be customised. After a number of alterations, this woman suggested that I started making them myself. And that was it! I started a label called ‘Courtezan’ where I created the perfect pencil skirt among other designs.” With the backing of her factory she opened a shop that she named ‘Courtezan’ in the Fulham Road in Chelsea and another, ‘Gail Berry’, on New King’s Road in Parsons Green. “No one knew who I was when

FINDING WHAT WOMEN WANT Throughout her career the one thing that resonates with Gail’s collections is “finding what women want, need but can’t get! “ So Gail made it her one-woman fashion mission to address these issues. Here are three prime examples of Gail Berry’s designs that compliment a woman’s figure as well as her wardrobe needs and wants:
1
“I believe you find out who you are in life very early on”
I first started but I had the most amazing people come and visit me. I had a doorbell-only shop. This was considered quite cool at the time but the only reason I had it is because I couldn’t afford an alarm system so I had to lock the door!” Gail has since dressed many a famous faces over the years: Helena Bonham Carter, Jo Wood, Anita Roddick and Kate Middleton, to name a few. Pop and rock stars wore her designs too. Standout names include Madonna, Prince and Bob Geldof’s girlfriend, Jeanne Marrine.
WEIGHTY ISSUES
Another aspect of Gail’s clothing that adds to its continued appeal is that her fabric choices can hug women’s figures and pull them in the right places. Although Gail is very keen to stress that she believes in women being themselves whatever size they may be. “I do not espouse women not eating properly. I think it’s very bad that women think they have to starve themselves to be attractive,” she emphasises. Typically Gail’s clothing comes in the popular sizes of small, medium and large. But she can make XS, XL and XXL, depending on the client. “I think it’s about being comfortable with who you are.
THE PERFECT VEST Vests need to cover bra straps, so the vest strap should be at least 2 inches wide. Armholes should be cut high and the scoop neck should be wide in the front and wide at the back. “Whether you’re 17 or 80, the vest I design is the perfect fit. I have over 200 pieces in my collection and I couldn’t live without these items in my wardrobe!”
2
THE PENCIL SKIRT Gail cuts all her pencil skirts in an upside triangle so they cut in at the waist, come out and then sit two and a half inches below the knee. “It’s a formula and it works,” she says. Gail always uses the type of fabric that doesn’t bobble, can wash and won’t fade at 40 degrees. Gail is also a firm believer in dressing day to night and she maintains that women should look sexy while being comfortable at the same time. “Everything is to do with looking sexy and being comfortable. My clothes are able to do this, plus at nonhaute-couture prices.”
3
THE LONG SLEEVED TOP Gail cuts all her tops so they go in at the elbows and wrists. Tops are always long on the arm and have cut-out holes to slip a thumb through if the owner desires. She feels that an elongated arm with the collarbone showing is sexy. Like her vests, armholes are cut high and the waist is long to lengthen the torso.

MARBELLA BOUND Gail is planning to organise private parties when she comes over to Marbella in April. She wants these to be a place where women can come and network, try on her clothes in a nonthreatening and fun environment with a glass or two of champagne. If there is a viable market Gail would like to move here indefinitely. She currently resides in Italy and spends a lot of time in London. “If women here already have an established network here, maybe selling bags or anything else really, I would be happy to collaborate with them,” she says. “Please call or get in touch Marbella Rocks readers if you think this could be you!” she urges. Gail also has plans to open an atelier here if things go well. “My aim is to open not just a shop, but somewhere where women can go and enjoy fashion and styling. I really want to make a difference here in Marbella, in a good way.” Gail also makes made-to-measure clothing and accessories by private consultation. She can be reached on +44 (0)7771 715072 or gailberry112@yahoo.co.uk for appointments.

Drink at least two litres of water a day so that you can start the detoxification process. One of the best beauty benefits of drinking water is that it helps your skin to purify the impurities. Water cleanses the body and eliminates the toxins and waste that cause inflammation and blemishes. It hydrates the body and removes excess oils and dirt, also assists in transporting nutrients and oxygen to skin cells. Drinking at least two litres per day gives the skin a bright noticeable change in less than a week.

HAIR & BEAUTY It rids your skin from dryness and wrinkles and can make the skin appear fuller since the hyaluronic acid that naturally exists in skin will pull in and hold the water for a wrinkle-plumping effect. Being hydrated has been scientifically proven to enhance concentration levels and it will keep you fuller for longer, creating a faster and healthier metabolism. Add flavour to your water by cutting up pieces of lemon and or lime, and stick them in a bottle or glass of water.
Cleanse the face and remove your make-up
The golden rule of beauty basics is to spare the time to remove all traces of the day’s worth of dirt and dust, every single night before bedtime. Makeup and free radicals left overnight cause dead skin cells to build up and don’t just clog pores; but can cause excessive dryness and even skin dandruff. Cleansing your face twice on a daily basis, morning and evening, is crucial for a clear complexion. A simple cleansing lotion, gel or soapfree face wash should do the trick. Washing your face more than this can result in dryness. The natural oils produced by the skin are required to nourish it.
Moisturise Hydrating the body from inside and outside is
important. After cleansing, follow up by moisturising your skin. Most creams and lotions have key ingredients that create a protective barrier on the surface of the skin to lock in moisture, and to protect the skin against external influences such as air pollutions, smoke, UV radiation and makeup. Slather on a moisturiser while your face is still damp to plump up and improve the appearance of fine lines as skin drinks up the moisture. The moisture will lock in better on damp skin than it would if it was completely dry. It’s important how you apply creams and serums to your face. The skin is really a big organ that needs massaging to keep firm and toned, so apply the product in sweeping movements up the jawline for the perfect application.

The side parting was a hit last year, thanks to Mr Beckham and will continue to dominate in 2015. However, it will be moving into a sleeker style, which is ideal for the city slicker business man. Hold on to your briefcases, boys - you now set the trend. This style looks great with a modern suit and smart attire. To carry off this look I must stress the importance of getting a good haircut. The style can be worn matt, creating a distinctly retro, cool effect. A classic glossy look, on the other hand, supplies plenty of that appealing uppercrust charm. When creating a high shine style, I would recommend using Redken For Men Stand Tough Extreme Gel (€11,06) to achieve the slick, precise finish we’re after. Ryan Gosling sports one of the easiest styles to emulate for any face or hair type. Ask your hairstylist for something high and tight on the side, and about an inch longer on top.
DON’T FADE AWAY
The ‘Fade’ haircut is characterised by subtle, gradual decreases in hair length, usually starting from the relatively longer top to the shorter sides in the back of the neck and around the ears. The ‘Fade’ will never be out of style and this year’s version is edgy, quirky and allows you to mix it up with a textured top, creating a very modern and fresh look. A cool and effortless tapered cut like this is easy to maintain; just apply and play around with Redken For Men
HAIR & BEAUTY and then let it dry naturally – this helps smooth the hair and gives it a super healthy shine.
Maneuver Wax (€ 11,06) which provides clean, mouldable texture and definition.
Go Long
Long hair and no, I’m not talking biker style, is set to have a moment in 2015. We will be seeing long hair coupled with more masculine styles; from lumberjack chic pioneer, Jared Leto, to model Ben Dahlhaus. Just know, that letting it grow doesn’t mean letting it go. Unkempt hair looks lazy and unintentional compared to groomed and cared for long hair. Be sure to keep going for regular trims and DON’T grow it past your shoulders. Arguably the worst part of growing your hair long are those awkward, in-between stages where the length is not short, not quite long, and not quite fit for being seen by the general public! There needs to be texture in the cut and, if it resembles a bob in any way, please start running as fast as you can to your stylist so that they can tidy it up and offer some expert advice on how best to get you over the transitional stage. A deep conditioning treatment such as Kerastase Masque Force Architect (€37,20) applied every week or so can also help keep your hair looking its absolute best. Alternatively, you could try working some Kerastase Elixir Ultime (€37,20) into towel-dried hair
JOIN THE MOVEMENT The ‘Mop’ is a vintage-inspired style that can be worn messy for that rocker cool look. Think ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’’s Jamie Dornan. This is a great look for the summer and can be worn front heavy or in a side parting. I do like the flexibility this style offers, as you can style it messy or you can slick it back with pomade for a more formal look. The style is as high maintenance as you’d like it to be. A lot of my clients come to me asking how best to achieve more movement in their hair. Start by applying Redken Signature Fashion Waves 07 Sea Salt Spray (€16,88) to towel-dried hair. Next, blow dry with a hair diffuser, which will help to form waves as part of the drying process. Finally try scrunching a little at the root area to give your waves lift.
WHAT’S THE FUZZ ABOUT?
For those who may be tired of the ‘lumbersexual’ look (slicked hair with a big beard), brace yourself because it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon as the hipster beards have just gotten bigger and bigger. There is even a dedicated Facebook page BILF (that’s ‘Beard I’d Like to Fondle’). I am quite fond of the look and like to rock a beard myself every now and then. Of course three-day stubble has never fallen out of fashion, but the trend for facial hair has been cranked up a notch. I am all for expressing yourself, but in the latest attempt to bring attention to their facial hair, men are dyeing their beards insanely bright colours - green, blue, and pink, or just turning it into a full on rainbow. They are even decorating them with flowers – each to their own I say. Whichever look you decide on, just stay away from Matthew McConaughey at this year’s Golden Globes - now that’s one scraggly mess. Till next time XOXO Daniel

award by the National Diabetes Association. He has just released a cookbook with the American Diabetes Association andsingle handedly fed 1,000 people in Jamaica for World Diabetes Day. He has also been influential in creating the first ever diabetes reality show‘Revered’ which is been picked up by some big, TV networks worldwide. To top it all off he is also the nephew of the legendary Bob Marley. Charles once had a promising singing and acting career but he turned to his attention to his passion, gastronomy after moving to Florida to provide a better life for his son. Marbella Rocks caught up with Charles to find out everything there is to know about his succesful publishing, TV and documentary career and how to eat healthily to live longer. Plus… of course…. what it was like to be related to one of the world’s greatest icons.
Q. Your first TV show The Poor Chef’ was a massive hit in the US and ubsequent book ‘Eat Cheap But Eat Well’ is a number 1 bestseller. How did you come up with the idea? I came from a culinary background and saw a major gap in the market to create healthy, affordable meals. You know real people making real food. All the current TV chefs only made haute cuisine type meals so I created a brand called ‘The Poor Chef’ where I made tasty meals that all families in America could afford and make at under 7 dollars a meal. It really took off and I was given a weekly segment on NBC that was syndicated into TV shows, books and sauces. Q. After the success of ‘The Poor Chef’ you were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. How did the diagnosis change your
HEALTH & FITNESS world both personally and professionally? I knew very little about the disease when I was diagnosed so I just thought I’m going to jump in and get really involved as I already had the success of ‘Poor Chef’ behind me I knew I could pioneer change. I tried to bring a new, young, fresh approach to diabetes. It’s not been covered by a young black man before so I built up my profile and made a name for myself so I could be credible and capitalise on the fact that I was a spokesperson for the disease. This is when my passion really clicked in. Q. Tell our readers more about your new documentary film ‘The Diabetic You’ which has been entered into the Cannes and the Sundance Film Festival? Filming the documentary opened up a major door into healthcare and pharmaceuticals companies. Instead of turning it into a 30 minute programme in Orlando as was originally planned, there was so much content and I uncovered layer after layer of stories that it warranted a much longer documentary film. It teaches of the dangers of diabetes and touches on the personal stories of those affected with diabetes to highlight the seriousness of the disease throughout the entire world. Q. It’s a major problem in the world that people are eating unhealthy food that medical professionals see as proportionately contributing to the rise in diabetes. How do you see this problem being solved in the long run? We are in a very bad situation because there is no diabetes education. The pharmaceutical companies are partly to blame. Patients need to be educated to take better care of themselves, especially type 2 diabetes. There are no television commercials, billboards, health and diet education. All marketing money is being spent on marketing events, travel,
elaborate events. We really need to start educating people that food is really a drug. It’s a killer, it’s addictive and the wrong foods taste fantastic. People need to know this. As a solution I would say we need ads running on the big successful commercial TV stations and magazines. Our goal is to get ‘The Diabetic You’ in front of the masses. You don’t feel diabetes. It slowly catches up to you and destroys you so early education is important. Q. Can you give our readers your top 5 tips to eating healthily to prevent diabetes?
Low carbohydrate and low sugar diet mainly containing fruit and vegetables ● LOW SODIUM FOOD ● STAY AWAY FROM FRIED FOOD. AVOID EATING OUT. ● EXPLORE YOUR OWN KITCHEN, TAKE TIME TO CREATE GOOD HEALTHY DINNERS AND SIT AROUND WITH THE FAMILY TO ENJOY ● STEER CLEAR OF DIET DRINKS AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

Q. We have to mention your very famous uncle, Bob Marley. Can you tell us a bit moreabout him as a person and what he was like as an uncle? I was fortunate enough to meet him twice before he passed. Both were very ingrained experiences on me because of the time he took to have with a 6/7 year old.The first time we walked into a hotel room full of ganja smoke, he took me outside as he obviously thought it was no place for a young boy and we played soccer and chatted. The second time was when he was going through chemo and he wasin a hospital room. I will always remember the time he took to spend with me and other people. He was very humble, quiet, understanding and patient. I remember he had a plastic bag with his dreadlocks in beside his bed. I asked him what was wrong and he just replied that he was sick. He was a true inspiration. Q. Bob Marley inspired change and a better life for humanity. Do you think throughout your career you have been influenced by him? Very much so. I knew I needed to do something special in my life althoughI wanted to build this on my own and have my own name andmovement. Very much of what I do today as a diabetes advocate comes from my passion and drive, that are engrained in me from my uncle and upbringing I believe.

Many will have given up by now and some of you might just be on the verge of disheartenment. In both cases there is a chance that the lack of results compared to the litres of sweat and tears and time you have invested just don’t add up. Am I right? With this in mind, and the fact that this is the time of year my inbox is crammed with people asking for advice, this month I will be covering some of the common questions and final pleas for help I’ve received over the last two months. Hopefully we can help you hit some results or even get you back in for another crack at the whip.

Should I take a fat burner? Which one is best?
A lot of questions come to me asking if I use fat burners and if so, which ones. The fact of the matter is that my daily diet consists of well-timed, clean, nutrient-rich foods and my life is based around this. Most people don’t have the time or knowledge to have this level of discipline so feel inclined to turn to time-saving products. My answers are always assuming that your diet has flaws. My first answer to this
PEET’S TIP:
question is always NO! Fat burners have fancy packaging and attractive wording such as ‘ripped’ and ‘shredded’ and there’s even one that says “FAT DESTROYER”. Are we really that gullible to think these are amazing magic pills? A typical fat burner will contain green tea, caffeine, yohimbine and carnatine, and while these ingredients are all efficient at activating fats, I feel all together there just isn’t enough of each ingredient to be significant and justify the cost. A ‘fat burner’ will also set you back between 25 – 40 euros.
TRY DRINKING GREEN TEA A FEW TIMES A DAY ESPECIALLY, BEFORE A CARDIO WORKOUT. SPINACH HAS ANTIOXIDANTS THAT AFFECT YOUR STUBBORN FAT STORES, SO PILE IT IN WITH YOUR MEALS. OMEGA 3 CAPSULES HAVE MANY BENEFITS INCLUDING FAT ACTIVATION, AND COUPLED WITH L-CARNITINE CAN HELP THE FAT CELLS ABSORB ANTIOXIDANTS THAT TELL THE CELL TO “WAKE UP”, MAKING IT AVAILABLE FOR SOME FAT BURNING.
HEALTH & FITNESS
I’ve cut out carbs and just eat pieces of fruit until my main meal, what’s best to eat for dinner?
NO NO NO NO NO!!! Stop right there!! The absolute worst thing to do is to not eat, or to skip meals. I understand that at a certain level of understanding it might make sense that the less food you eat the less fat you will store. But consider this one question: Do you think you are smarter than your body? When you don’t eat for long periods of time the body takes note and keeps an eye on it, if this becomes a habit then when you do consume your meal it will take the initiative to store some of the food you eat for an emergency LIKE TOMORROW WHEN YOUR’E NOT GOING TO EAT ALL DAY! Your body will become accustomed to storing half your meal as fat (stored energy) and digesting the other half!
PEET’S TIP:
EAT SMALLER BUT OFTEN. DOING SO WILL SEND A REGULAR NUTRIENT RICH SUPPLY OF GOOD CARBS, PROTEINS AND GOOD FATS TO YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM TO LET IT RELAX AND KNOW THAT YOU HAVE IT UNDER CONTROL. IT IS THEN LESS LIKELY TO PANIC AND STORE! THE IDEA IS FOR YOUR BODY TO USE ALL OF THE FOOD’S ENERGY AS YOU CONSUME IT. THIS IS WHAT THEY CALL YOUR METABOLISM AND BY EATING THIS WAY, YOU ARE REGULATING IT.
I’m still not losing that weight after hours of cardio. What do you recommend? Another common mistake is to overdo it with the cardio. Again, in a similar way to how the body is in charge of keeping an eye on your food and how it needs to store it, you body is very mindful of your activity patterns. It will notice that you are spinning for an hour and then doing more
cardio and then hitting some weights. For this reason it’s going to start to feel that it has to again save energy from your food consumption to fuel this high level of stress and energy use. All of a sudden you have put yourself back in the position that the body is stressed and feels it has to take emergency measures to ensure you always have enough energy. If you do this, you’re storing half your food energy as fat and only using half again.
PEET’S TIP:
TRY AND BREAK YOUR CARDIO DOWN INTO SMALL BUT INTENSE INTERVALS, THIS WE CALL HIIT CARDIO (HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING). THE BEST WAY TO APPROACH THIS (I’LL USE TREADMILL AS AN EXAMPLE, BUT IS TRUE OF MOST OF YOUR EXERCISES) IS TO SPRINT AT TOP SPEED FOR 60-80 SECONDS THEN REST, THEN REPEAT THE PROCESS. FIFTEEN MINS OF HIIT AND TWO 30 MIN SESSIONS OF LOW INTENSITY (INCLINE WALK/ LIGHT JOG) TWICE A WEEK, COUPLED WITH A NUTRIENTRICH DIET SHOULD BE ENOUGH TO SEE A CHANGE. THIS LEAVES PLENTY MORE TIME TO HIT THE WEIGHTS AND REMEMBER THAT MUSCLE BURNS FAT!
I’m always hungry and just can’t stop snacking. What are the best things to snack on that won’t make me fat? While there are healthier alternatives to crisps and chocolate, the trouble lies a lot deeper than what it is you’re snacking on. IT’S THE SNACKING ITSELF that’s the issue. So first we need to address the need and want to snack before we talk about what is healthier.
Leptin and Fibre One of the many hormones produced by your fat cells is leptin, which plays a role in appetite control. Research has found that excess body fat can cause a condition known as leptin resistance, which means even though you have higher levels of leptin (women have twice as much as men) it’s

HEALTH & FITNESS
PEET’S TIP:
TRY EATING ONE CUP OF VEGETABLES BEFORE 10 A.M. EACH DAY. STUDIES HAVE FOUND THAT PEOPLE WHO TAKE THIS ADVICE TEND TO BE LESS HUNGRY LATER IN THE DAY. PLUS, ALONG WITH SATIATING FIBRE, VEGETABLES CONTAIN ESSENTIAL ANTIOXIDANTS AND VITAMINS THAT HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO REDUCE THE INFLAMMATION THAT INTERFERES WITH LEPTIN, WHICH IN TURN WILL HELP INCREASE FAT BURNING AND REDUCE YOUR CRAVINGS. FIBRE IS A NON-DIGESTING CARBOHYDRATE; BASICALLY IT JUST SITS IN YOUR GUT TAKING UP SPACE, UNTIL YOUR BODY PASSES WASTE. FIBROUS WHOLE-WHEAT CARBOHYDRATES DIGEST SLOWLY AND FILL UP SPACE, MAKING YOU LESS LIKELY TO FEEL PECKISH. somehow not getting to your brain to give it the signal that you don’t need to eat. One theory is that fat cells produce inflammatory chemicals that block the action of leptin, so your body begins to think its starving. Obviously, that’s not really the case, but to compensate for this perceived threat to survival, your metabolism slows down and your brain sends constant hunger signals in an effort to force you to eat. Hence feeling the need to snack! The good news is that leptin resistance can be combated with diet and exercise. And last but not least, a really common question I receive from guys and girls is:
Should I be taking BCAA or is a protein shake enough? FOR THIS I HAVE CREATED A LITTLE ANALOGY TO PUT IT ALL INTO CONTEXT: You are the site foreman on a building site. You need to oversee the demolition of a house and then build a bigger, nicer looking house in its place. For this you need to make sure the right materials are delivered AT THE BEST TIME! So you go to the gym to demolish the house, you stimulate and tear your muscles ready to repair and BUILD A BIGGER HOUSE. Proteins are the bricks and BCAA (Branch Chain Amino Acids) are the cement. You need to have more bricks and cement than you had in the old house to build a bigger one, but you also want to have the materials there when there are more workers on site. Immediately after training (demolition) there is a wave of 100 workers onsite for around an hour (the anabolic window is the period after training that the body is working overtime to repair the damage and trauma), in this time, a lot of building
82 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 08
will get done and its essential to get the materials in for all of the workers to get a good start, so as foreman you need to deliver bricks and cement. It’s not so good to deliver 5000 bricks when there are only 4 guys working and in turn not optimal to deliver 500 bricks when there are 100 workers on site! So our levels of protein and BCAA need to be higher than they were before we trained as we have depleted them during demolition. BCAA should be taken before and after training for this exact reason and then we will take a whey (fast absorbing) protein immediately after. This pattern will best supply and replenish around your workout and will set you off to a good repair process as you pass through the anabolic window. While I don’t personally believe this is a magic essential period of repair I do believe it’s an optimal time to deliver your materials.
PEET’S TIP:
I TAKE BCAA IN MY INTRA (DURING TRAINING) DRINK WITH A DOSE OF GLUTAMINE, HMB AND MALTODEXTRIN (A FAST CARB THAT HELPS GET IT INTO MY BLOODSTREAM). BETWEEN MEALS I WILL TAKE A HALF DOSE OF BCAA IN DRINK FORM AS BCAA BUILDS PROTEIN SO I’M ALWAYS MINDFUL TO BACK UP MY PROTEIN INTAKE WITH BCAA THROUGHOUT THE DAY. WHEN YOU HAVE FINALLY BUILT YOUR MANSION YOU CAN RETIRE AND LIVE IN IT!

AGEING
EXERCISE A
s we get older our muscle mass begins to decline and there is a potential loss of bone density. Bone density is the amount of bone tissue within a volume of bone and a decrease in bone density can increase the chances of injury and osteoporosis (bones become more fragile with more chance of fracturing).
REDUCTION OF MUSCLE MASS
The reduction in muscle mass makes it more difficult to perform activities such as running, swimming and cycling powerfully. Although running and cycling can preserve leg muscle tissue, they do not have any effect on the upper body. Therefore based on the effects of ageing on bone and muscle loss, many experts recommend older athletes include resistance training alongside their aerobic sessions. This is because weight training will maintain bone and muscle mass, and the more lean muscle mass a body has, the better the metabolic rate.
THE LOSS OF MUSCLE AND HOW TO STOP IT
Muscle reaches its maximum size by about the age of 25 in most people. There is
84 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 08
then about a 10% decrease between the age of 25 and 45 with a 45% shrinkage over the next 30 years. But why does so much muscle tissue disappear, and why does the degeneration accelerate after the age of 50? New research from Sweden has the answer. The main reason for the reduction is that the total number of cells in any particular muscle stays pretty constant until the age of 30 but then begins a steady decline.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF MUSCLE FIBRES IN YOUR BODY:
TYPE 1 are slow twitch fibres, which contract slowly but have great endurance. TYPE 2 are fast twitch fibres, which contract quickly but have low endurance capacities. A decrease in the size of type 2 fibres plays a key role in the muscle shrinking process, with individual fast twitch fibres shrivelling by about 25-30% between the ages of 20 and 80. However, the type 1 (‘slow-twitch’) muscle cells, either remain unchanged in size or can expand by up to 20% in individuals who remain very physically active as they get older. This therefore compensates for the loss of size of type 2 fibres. But what
causes the fairly dramatic loss in muscle cell numbers? Over time (especially after the age of 50) ‘motor nerve cells’ in the spinal cord begin to deteriorate at a steady rate. The motor nerve cells are normally in close contact with muscle cells and tell the muscle fibres when to contract during physical activity. This connection between motor nerves and their associated muscle cells is also necessary to keep the muscle fibres alive. Therefore as motor nerve cells die, the muscle cells to which they are attached also bite the dust.
RESISTANCE TRAINING: POSITIVE EFFECTS
Fortunately, there’s a positive side to the story. People who participate in resistance training don’t necessarily halt the fibre death process, but they can stop and even reverse the reduction of size in the type 2 fibres. Although the number of muscle cells declines, type 2 (and sometimes even type 1) fibres may get larger as a result of strength training, leading to a potential advancement, instead of total muscle tissue in the body. Since the overall process of muscle atrophy (reduction) picks up steam after the age of 50, strength training for people over 50 is especially critical.
HOW THIS AFFECTS YOUR TRAINING PROGRAMME
I encourage all of my clients to include strength training in their fitness regime as creating lean functional muscle is key to a healthy body. Lean muscle is very metabolically active and it plays a big role in supporting the skeleton. This is bsolutely vital as we begin to fight the ageing process.
OKAY, SO WHAT DOES THIS ALL ACTUALLY MEAN?
The bad news is that as we get older, we lose muscle and bone mass. This means that we are at more risk of breaking bones and that we generally have less definition to our bodies. Basically, we can easily start to look like blobs. Make that wrinkled blobs. But before you start feeling too depressed and dejected, there is good news… The good news is that you can help delay this ageing process significantly by exercising. Jojo explains that it’s not just any old exercise that will do this, but specific

Since muscle is very metabolically active, it helps in burning calories. Also, very importantly, muscle plays a highly important role in supporting the skeleton thus helping posture and last, but certainly not least, muscle provides body definition.
THESE ARE MY 3 FAVOURITE STRENGTH EXERCISES
● Deadlifts Squats ● Push-ups ● Every workout I plan would most certainly include one of the above exercises.
THIS WEEK’S WORKOUT
35 DEADLIFTS Make sure the bar is over shoes, your back is flat and head is up. Don’t curve your spine as you pull the bar with straight arms to your hips.
5 PUSH-UPS Make full contact with the floor, with locked-out knees and bum cheeks clenched tight. Chest must touch the floor, so modify to kneeling position if you are not strong enough to do a full version.
THEN REPEAT THE FOLLOWING 10 Burpees 25 Deadlifts 10 Push-ups 10 Burpees 15 Deadlifts 15 Push-ups 10 Burpees 10 Deadlifts 25 Push-ups 10 Burpees 5 Deadlifts 35 Push-ups
I RECOMMEND seeking advice from a gym trainer or a personal trainer before starting a new exercise regime, especially one that is to includen lifting weights. I see many people attempting the above exercises incorrectly, therefore risking an injury before they have made any gains. Remember to warm up and mobilise all of your muscles and joints before starting to train, then cool off and stretch and the end. ISSUE 08 | MARBELLAROCKS

RESTAURANT REVIEW
LIMONERO
A
beautiful gem of a restaurant has just opened up in Estepona, serving the quality of fine dining you´d expect from a 5-star Marbella eatery but at affordable prices. Limonero is the brainchild of experienced restauranteur and hotelier Mike Griffin, who has run successful restaurants in the UK for over 40 years. Together with his business partner, Susan Lyons, they came up with the concept of Limonero and found a perfect venue to accommodate their visionary restaurant, overlooking the stunning marina in Estepona. There are two things that will strike you when you walk into Limonero when it opens its doors on March 1st. Firstly, that it has been totally renovated throughout with classic wooden decor and a fully stocked front of house bar with seating on large comfortable chairs. Secondly the menu. It is so wide and varied
86 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 08
that you´d be hard pushed to decide on just the one starter, main course and dessert. Our reviewers opted for the highly recommended starter dishes of Chicken liver parfait, apricot chutney and melba toast and Limonero garlic mushrooms presented in a filo pastry basket with salad garnish. Both were exquisite. The latter even more so as it was so beautifully presented yet entirely edible. For mains, the choice was even harder! Among the dishes on offer you can choose Filleted sea bass with a red pepper puree, Beer battered cod served with chunky chips and mushy or garden peas, King prawn and scallop provencal served with basmati rice or Stuffed supreme of chicken wrapped in pancetta stuffed with mozzarella cheese. Plus there´s an array of salads, pastas and soups to choose from if you prefer a lighter option. The tasters went for the classy combination of Monkfish skewer
wrapped in pancetta which was bursting with flavour and the Rumpelstiltskin Limonero, which is a prime marinated rump steak topped with bubbling stilton cheese, and was simply divine! A must try dish. All mains are served with your choice of salad or fresh vegetables of the day. For dessert you can choose from Sticky toffee pudding, cheesecake, chocolate brownie or the Limonero mess which is a sharer pudding including cream meringue fresh tropical fruits with a sweet lemon syrup and chocolate! Puddings are home made on the premises and will vary seasonally. As well as seeing a gap in the market for an affordable, fine dining restaurant for lunches and dinners, Limonero´s Mike Griffin has noticed there´s not a great deal of local restaurants offering a tasty, yet healthy option for breakfast.
GASTRONOMY
So righting that wrong, Limonero restaurant will be opening from 9am to serve a range of tasty options that veer away from English breakfasts we have become so accustomed to being bombarded by on the Costa del Sol. Pop by and try a Traditional continental eggs benedict or Eggs Limonero, which is poached eggs with smoked salmon. Also Greek yoghurt fresh fruit and nuts. You can also chose the traditional English fry up if you really feel like being naughty! All bread is freshly made on site too. There is another great appeal to Limonero that will make it an even popular choice in summer. The back of the restaurant has its very own exclusive chill out area and private bar that can hold an additional 100-150 people. This will be available for private parties and functions as well as Thursday special half price cocktail night! Limonero are planning live music and themed nights to accommodate and entertain crowds at weekends in the summer. In quieter months it will be the perfect area to escape to enjoy a pre or post dinner cocktail.

NIMROD MESSEG ‘Iron that breathes’
I
sraeli sculptor Nimrod Messeg has lived in Spain since 1999. Working from his own workshop, Nimrod creates sculptures exclusively from iron using ancient forging techniques including welding and power hammering that turns a brutal metal into a beautiful piece of art. Born in Israel in 1970 to Aarhon Messeg, a leading Israeli artist, and Sabina Messeg, a famous poet, Nimrod began his creative life at a very young age sculpting in his father’s workshop. After travelling
the world for many years, Nimrod finally settled in Marbella. “Each sculpture gradually takes on a life of its own and, using me as its tool, develops its own personality making it impossible to create two pieces the same.” Nimrod’s sculptures are permanently on display in his workshop / gallery in Poligono Marbella, Calle Aluminio 6 Poligono Industrial La Ermita, Marbella. info@messegdesign. com Photos by Madison Studio

PSYCHOLOGY
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
R
elationships arise in part out of a need to reinstate the sense of joy and aliveness that we were born with. Throughout the course of our lives, if our needs were not met, or events occurred to create suffering, according to the IMAGO theory (Hendrix, 1930), we continue to unconsciously draw into our lives the people who will allow us to re-enact the very circumstances that created our initial wound, allowing opportunity for healing to take place and herald our return to wholeness, happiness and joy.

Recognising the hurt that is being played out is the first step towards enabling this renaissance. Ask yourself: ● Do you attract those who build you up or knock you down? ● Does your partner have the same personality traits as one of your parents? ● Do you feel valued by your friends? ● Is your partner supportive or abusive? ● Do those around you support your personal truth, or distract you from it? ● Do the same wounds keep being opened by different people? Considering why we attract the people that we do, and being able to perceive the underlying patterns of interaction playing out, we can identify our personal wound, and this time change our response to the situation, initiating a process of inner healing and transformation, and thus heralding our return towards love and joy. When we recognise the root of our relationship behaviour patterns and reactive thought processes, we are half way to healing. To achieve this, one method is to allow what you are thinking and feeling to flow back to the very first time that you remember feeling this way. What was going on? Who was there? Where do you feel this in your body? What needs were unmet? WHEN YOU SEE THE OLD WOUND, YOU CAN INITIATE A PROCESS OF HEALING WHICH CAN BE SUPPORTED WITH THE FOLLOWING PRACTICES:
Letting go
Accept that you cannot change what has been, no matter how painful, traumatic or disturbing it was. This acceptance will help enable healing within, and ease unconscious reactions that are causing suffering in your current relationship. The secret is to let go and keep letting go each time, to allow the wound to fully heal.
PSYCHOLOGY
Forgiveness
When you choose to forgive what has been, because you want peace in your soul, situations in your current relationship that usually sting due to past wounds will no longer result in the same negative reactions, allowing for positivity to grow.
Gratitude
When gratitude can be felt, for the positive qualities in those who may have hurt you in the past, for what is now, for who is now, this new chosen perception will improve your relationship pattern and promote joyful relations with others, because you empower your conscious mind to heal old wounds.
Choose joy
We can choose to see things as black and white, or shades of grey. We can choose anxiety or peace, trust or distrust, hate or love, sadness or joy. Choice is the ointment of wellbeing. Choosing joy may bring
a painful transition, but, if joy is your choice, one way or another, you will cultivate joy.
Authenticity
Many believe that being joyful means pretending that things are better than they are, but true joy can only flourish in a spirit of authenticity. Dealing with problems joyfully means reminding yourself of all the times you’ve made it through difficulties before, and looking for the beauty, happiness, positivity and light in current relationships. It is about being true to what is; the situation and the desires of your heart. Ultimately, cultivating positive relations is simply the decision to do so, and making this decision the focus of our thoughts, behaviours and actions. When we change, those around us will either respond with positivity, or not. We cannot change people. We can change who we are, and inspire through example. When we work through this process together, we create an environment in which positive relationships can be cultivated and relationships can flourish.

CAREERS
MILLION DOLLAR TIPS
AS C.E.O. AND OWNER OF TEN SUCCESSFUL COMPUTER SOFTWARE COMPANIES (HIS 11TH JUST SOLD FOR A COOL $40M) ENTREPRENEUR ALAN MATTHEWS SHARES HIS TIPS ON BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS.
STARTING UP So you want to be an entrepreneur and start a company but you’re just an employee with an idea. How are you going to create a strong company which is both capable of satisfying its employees and that also has high growth sales and high value? A company that you believe embraces your bright vision and that will reward your whole team well into the future for their work and dedication. Your ability to broadcast the right message and build belief in your strategy will be the key to your success. How do you do that? THIS IS HOW I DO IT. THE NEED FOR BELIEF We (people, humanity, us) would like to believe that we’re working to create greater value for both ourselves and the environment in which we live. Some people more passively,
96 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02
some more aggressively. The ‘believe’ part is what needs to be created, harnessed, and channeled into the better, future place that we want to live in. We need to create ‘belief’ in a rewarding path that will satisfy us for the foreseeable future. This belief is what gives us the ability to invest in the present in order to harvest in the future. Look to religion if you question the ability of belief and faith to drive work today for salvation tomorrow. A strong belief in wealth creation through character development is the model I’d like to propose. It’s the investment in a team-oriented character development program that creates belief strong enough to carry a team to success. Without that belief structure pulling the whole team forward you will spend too much time creating it, one on one, with every employee.
With it, you can manage a large group of people while knowing the underlying message is strong, vibrant and selfpromoting. Promote belief in a good cause of your making and not yourself. Don’t create a cult of personality unless you intend to be a public person throughout your life. To create this belief we need to harness the best common characteristics of wealth and relentlessly promote them as characteristics we both want to promote within the team. Belief in success through strong character development becomes a cultural attitude, which looks similar to professional sports teams’ approach to winning. It’s not only performance on the field as much as a mindset of beliefs around which you live, work and train to win. I feel this is why so many sporting teams win on home ground, as
CAREERS opposed to away. While wealth is typically transliterated into money it is so much more than that. Wealth incorporates community standing and support, job titles, income, confidence, pride, a desire for loyalty and many of the things that bring long-term happiness to the typical person. Wealth comes from winning. These are the elements of desire that can be used to create a tribal spirit that a team uses to defend its belief structure. So how do you feel about yourself and where you fit in the world? Are you proud of your standing in the community and do you feel on top of it or subverted by it? Do you feel wealthy with relationships, moral support, a work environment that you enjoy engaging with in the morning? Do you have a mission that’s yours to achieve? Or do you fight for every inch, a lone warrior in a sea of idiots? How strongly do you want to defend what you’ve created from competition and encroachment by others? We need to create an endorphininduced emotional response so that our employees defend and promote the tribe with a visceral strength. As one person you can’t do very much (at least at a ratio of one to about seven billion people in the world), but with others you can achieve a lot; think of religions, political parties, landing on the mo on. Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, Hitler and many others used the common desire of others to achieve their own goals to inspire belief, good and bad. They all believed they were on a critical mission just as you need to. You’re responsible for your employees’ wealth, which is a big responsibility. Embracing that will be necessary because no company gets big without a lot of employees. Are you comfortable engaging others to be part of your work? If not, then how would you have to feel about your work for that to be true? To make a difference you need an army of people moving towards
your vision and that vision has to encompass many people. Capitalism provides individuals with the tools necessary to manifest these ideas but only if you can persuade others to join your journey. Wealth creation still requires a lot of work. Work is more easily accomplished when we have a strong belief in why we are working. Strong work ethics and belief in the positive outcome of work come from good character development at earlier stages in life. Character development breeds wealth through this positive feedback loop. By openly embracing, and endorsing character as a requirement for employment we breed and support a culture that’s aligned with wealth creation. In short: Don’t hire people who don’t have good character! Growth provides opportunities for personal development and in companies we have unlimited opportunities for growth. Growth, like inflation, allows us to eradicate the sins of the past and to offer more opportunity into the future. A lot of billing hides a lot of sins. If we build an annuity and invest in its growth it can pay us for a long time; of course the next generation will also need their own annuity, which commences for them every day a new employee starts. CAREERS in order to foster the principals we need to attract the people we want in another positive feedback loop. I use the annual doubleup of revenue as a de-facto achievable goal. If we define ourselves by believing we can double our new sales target every year our goals will be more than met. In small companies it’s easy to double your sales annually! In large companies it’s very difficult. The discipline to achieve that growth requires a strong focus and dedication to the art of sales and corporate development, foresight, engineering and marketing. The basic message though, is double your sales staff and double your revenue. If each salesperson pays for him or herself, then in the early days in which double ups don’t take you very far… 0.5M, 1M, 2M in three years for example, you will still have built strong leaders capable of hiring and maintaining the next level. Prefunding start-ups don’t have a lot of people because not too many people can live on nothing so getting sales going early to be able to bootstrap into existence is critical. You need very little money to start that way. I’ve started service companies and agencies with around $150K and taken them to profitability within 6 months through this mechanism many times, using strong sales leaders. I strongly ascertain the belief systems you hold as well as spurring on and motivating the people you hire in these belief systems will determine the success or failure of your business.

rick Lane has been graced with its first ever cereal café. The hipster style ‘Cereal Killer Café’ is run by twins from Belfast, Gary and Alan, who concocted this idea on a hangover. In true 80s style, the café has a collection of over 100 cereals, whilst also serving some nostalgic cereal classics. Limited edition boxes, collectibles and vintage magazines give the quirky café a yesteryear vibe. The café is open from 7am until 10pm, so cereal fiends can satisfy their cravings for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Dermot O’Leary hosted the National Television Awards at the O2 centre on Wednesday 21st January. It turned out to be a night full of surprises. From Sheridan Smith beating Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch to David Walliams scooping the ‘Best TV Judge’ award over Simon Cowell, it was an unpredictable night. Ant and Dec were awarded the esteemed title of ‘Best Entertainment Presenter’ for the 14th year in a row, beating out host Dermot O’Leary, Keith Lemon and Brad Walsh. Proving their comedic talent, Dec quipped, “We sometimes let Dermot touch it.” Speaking about their win Ant said, “I honestly didn’t think we would win again. We thought tonight

was going to be the night we didn’t win - thank God it wasn’t! We genuinely love what we do and we don’t want to stop. We feel so privileged to have the shows we have, so thank you so much to everyone at home.”
WHAT’S TRENDING
With the film awards season in full swing, the 72nd annual Golden Globes took place in the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on 11th January. In spite of its location, it seems the Brits triumphed in the style stakes and the award gongs! We had some British beauties sweeping the red carpet including Emily Blunt, Keira Knightley, Rosamund Pike, Sienna Miller and Kate Beckinsale who all opted for a light snowy palette. Felicity Jones stunned in a dramatic flowing teal dress whilst Ruth Wilson dazzled in emerald green. Also in tow was George Clooney’s new British wife
Amal, who made her debut Golden Globes appearance in a stunning black dress. Joanne Froggatt and Laura Carmichael looked breathtaking in their fulllength fitted gowns. Even though the Brits’ sartorial stakes were high, some of the most prestigious awards were won by our very own too. Eddie Redmayne won the award for ‘Best Actor’ thanks to his moving performance in ‘The Theory of Everything’, beating some iconic actors such as Steve Carell, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jake Gyllenhaal and David Oyelowo. Joanne Froggatt won the award for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for her portrayal of Mrs. Anna Bates in ‘Downton Abbey’, beating some other talented actresses including Uzo Aduba, Kathy Bates, Allison Janney and Michelle Monaghan. Ruth Wilson won a tough category as ‘Best Actress’ beating Claire Danes, Viola Davis, Julianna Margulies and Robin Wright for her acclaimed performance in
‘The Affair’. Two other major events took place to celebrate the world of music and the world of movies. The BAFTAs saw British actor Eddie Redmayne triumph again. He has had an outstanding response to his incredible portrayal of Stephen Hawking in ‘The Theory of Everything’, and he proudly took home the leading actor award. The film was also awarded another gong for ‘Outstanding British Film’. To celebrate the music industry, the 57th Annual Grammy Awards took place in Los Angeles the same evening. Flying the flag for Britain, was sensational newcomer Sam Smith who won four Grammys, just nine months after the release of his debut album, ‘In the Lonely Hour’. Humbly accepting one of his awards, he said, “Before I made this record, I was doing everything to try and get my music heard, I tried to lose weight and I was making awful music. It was when I started to be myself that the music flowed.” Probably the most touching moment was when he gracefully thanked his ex for inspiring his hit album. “I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys.”
FASHION
In spite of the terrific gongs awarded at the BAFTAs and the Grammys, the fashion standards were set high too. As two of the biggest nights in showbiz coincided on the same evening, the outfits had to be on point for the starts to get their much sought after column inches. Here are some of the best looks from the Grammys and the BAFTAs:
MILEY CYRUS - THE GRAMMYS For once, the raunchy songstress looked demure and elegant in a cut out Alexandre Vauthier black dress.
KATY PERRY - THE GRAMMYS
The talented musician stepped out in a silver Zuhair Murad dress with an elaborate beaded fringe.
CIARA - THE GRAMMYS
Ciara turned heads in a ruffled Alexandre Vauthier confection, teamed with Christian Louboutin stilettos.
BEYONCE - THE GRAMMYS
As always, Beyonce stunned in a floor length Proenza Schouler lace black gown.
TAYLOR SWIFT - THE GRAMMYS Our favourite pop girl went for a dramatic teal ombre Elie Saab gown.

ASTROLOGY
MARBELLA ROCKS ASTROLOGY FORECAST MARCH 2015
Aries
Gemini
Leo
It’s the start of something big this month and I’m not just talking about your birthday celebrations. Fresh starts, new beginnings and a new you on some level are in order. If you’ve been thinking about a makeover now would be that time. Inner changes work their magic and manifest not just in a glorious, better versions of you but in fresh opportunities. Whatever you do now, don’t be your old self. Think, act and dress differently. If attention-seeking is your goal you’ll succeed beyond your expectations. Others show their approval with this fabulous social butterfly. Whether attracting an admiring crowd or the attention of one special person is on your agenda - you’ll succeed. Proof that birthday wishes can and do come true.
Is there a friend or social connection you’re no longer feeling the resonance with? Don’t be afraid to let stale contacts lapse now as your social life brightens and moves on into a new phase with fabulous new people who can offer new experiences and the excitement you’re craving now. You may find yourself preferring being in groups to intimate one-toone encounters now and if partners try to stifle your desire for freedom you could turn resentful. Look for a balance between intimacy and letting go. A fresh career opportunity could be on its way and if you’ve a mind to change jobs now, mind those social and professional connections, as someone you know could point you in exactly the right direction. This month proves it’s not what you know it’s whom you know that matters.
Lovers have to want the same things as you do now or you may be looking for the one who does. Right now you’re prepared to give someone one more chance but if after all this, romance turns into nothing but a chore you’ll opt for having fun instead. That ideal lover right now is the one who combines the exotic with a heady taste of adventure. Throw in a touch of glamour and you’re hooked. A seriously lucky break could be heading your way - and we are talking about a game changer! You may have to dig deep into your soul reserves of personal power as some kind of negotiating may be necessary around this and it’s important not to undersell yourself. That goes for your personal life as well as your professional one. Value yourself and others will reflect your inner values and here ‘value’ is just another word for ‘love’.
Taurus
Cancer
Virgo
You’ll know for certain if you’re with the right person or not this month or if your relationship has a future. Revelations may show you which way the winds of change may blow through your love life and you’ll act on this information accordingly. People can forget you hide a steely determination under that easy-going exterior and you’ll stick out for what you want - even if it means walking away from an emotional investment in the short-term. You’re being set up for a brand new beginning on some level but you may have to wait a month or so before it appears. That ex, however, could represent history repeating itself. Ask yourself if you want more of the same or are you ready for something different?
Freedom-enhancing news arrives which could break you free of restrictions or that rut you’ve fallen into. Travel or an opportunity could upgrade your skills and form part of this. It’s time to broaden your horizons on some level. If that rut relates to your job, however, and you are the square peg in a round rut - nothing is going to keep you in it for too much longer. Fantastic career opportunities beckon you, which may require you to take on more responsibility or assume some kind of leadership role. If you’ve been contemplating taking that next step up the ladder, now is the time to make your move. Project a professional image and be seen as someone who knows what they are talking about. Those in positions of authority are taking note and liking what they see. While you may be asked to take on more, you’ll receive the rewards that go with that.

Big changes lie ahead for you this month, Virgo. Are you ready? Partnerships are in focus and you’ll both be craving both closeness and intensity. You want to connect on a deep soul level - that transcendental connection that fuses body, mind and soul. What you share with another - be it a romantic connection, a living space, a joint account or a dream becomes important as does your share in this. Those of you already coupled up will have a lot invested in the relationship now - but what’s important is to look at ensuring that it is a 50/50 investment and you get return. Singles could attract someone who understands their need for a connection that’s far removed from superficial. It’s more than just romance - it’s alchemy.
Libra
Sagittarius
Aquarius
Spring arrives and it’s time to turn up the heat, Libra - at least between you and someone special. No one to call your own? You’ll spring into action and won’t wait for love to come looking, instead you’ll be in hot pursuit of passion in general or one person in particular - and not likely to take ‘no’ for an answer either! This month brings a literal ‘total eclipse of the heart’ moment when you realise you are either with the right person or that something has to change. Being the sign of partnerships, there is nothing sadder than a single Libran. If that’s the case the stars are now in alignment to enable you to correct the deficit - but you have to do your own part. Don’t continue to lurk under the radar. The one you’re looking for is seeking you too so make sure you get out there and find each other! This could be a match made in heaven.
Don’t become dogmatic or insist on having your own way at work otherwise you’ll end up butting heads with co-workers and superiors alike. It’s time to foster a sense of esprit de corps and understand there is no ‘I’ in ‘team’. If you do, you’ll be rewarded with backing instead of opposition. But you should be feeling more than usually cooperative now as love is definitely in the air. Word-based foreplay has your motor running - and you’re intrigued as this person offers you the whole package. What’s more, there’s some kind of star quality about them - or maybe the stars are in your eyes. No matter which, this could be someone who offers the kind of romantic fun that could have been lacking recently. That doesn’t mean to say it won’t get serious. But having fun is a business you now need to take seriously.
Momentous news related to money matters gives you the ability to plan for the future now. Extra cash or a new source of income could be heading your way and if so, it’s time to think in the long term and not just about updating your wardrobe. Establishing something for yourself is the gift here and that means letting go of instant gratification and holding out for something so much better. You could be offered the opportunity to upgrade your home or lifestyle or if you have been toying with the idea of running your own show, then investing in your own business ideas could be the way to go. But think investment and not just investment dressing. Invest in a lifestyle, a dream, a business, a home or a learning opportunity. Above all, understand the best long-term investment you can make is in yourself now. Bank on it.
Scorpio
Capricorn
Pisces
You start the month flirting up a storm or at the very least, fired up by an idea that you have to see through to completion. However, romance may go on the backburner mid-month as exciting developments on the work front could either give you a chance to showcase your smarts either with an enticing new job offer or opportunity at your present workplace. However, singles may have inadvertently planted a seed, which while it may take some time to take root, could well now blossom into something serious. Your real task this month however is to find that ideal work/ love balance so you don’t have to compromise on either your career or your relationships. Be careful you don’t end up sacrificing one for the other. When people talk about the Eternal Triangle they forget that sometimes your job can end up being ‘the other man/woman’. You don’t have to choose.
Your living arrangements could change, perhaps as a result of a golden opportunity. If you’ve been longing for an upgrade - not just around your home but in any area of your life, this March could see it appear. If you’ve had more than your fair share of challenges coming your way of late, then the universe is about to acknowledge this and reward your efforts in kind. What occurs not only sets you free but also makes you realise just how far you’ve come. If you normally steer clear of the spotlight, you won’t be able to avoid attracting attention now. Romance comes packaged with serious promise and long-term potential. Whether you’re looking to win someone’s heart or someone’s business, everyone may just seem to want to say ‘yes’ to you now. Work it, baby.
If love (or a lover) appears elusive, please don’t chase after it or them this month. For one thing, neediness is not a good look. And for another, are you certain you’re not looking for love in all the wrong places? The stars say that when the time is right it will find you so why not just relax and know that you’ll be in exactly the right place when it does. If doors to romance are marked ‘closed’ now, when it comes to your career there’s nothing but green lights ahead as past efforts now pay off with that promotion, project or news about a position that you’ve been waiting on. People may have dismissed you as a lightweight in the past and now it’s your chance to show them how wrong they’ve been. Chances are you’ll be laughing all the way to the bank as you do so. Savour the moment. You’ve earned it.
